So I've been pretty bad at growing peppers, from the start I made rookie mistakes like 'planting them too close around tomatoes', 'planting them in the shade of tomatoes' and 'planting them too far away from each other', but as years went by, I got progressively worse.
I didn't know what was the problem, my peppers would be small, unsightly, with small leaves, and they would make only a few small peppers, and even that would grow late into the fall. My tomatoes, in comparison, were growing into monsters and would make unlimited tomatoes (or so it felt). I tried to problem-solve this by typing 'how to grow peppers' into youtube, but all I got was a video from a male saying 'don't water them too much'. Hm. I rarely watered anything in my garden anyway.
The Roots and Refuge queen said she had great success with transplanting her peppers out later in the season, when the nights were no longer cold; she noticed that peppers hated cold nights, and would get stunted if it was even a bit cold outside when they're out. This is it, I thought. I was going to transplant my peppers late, and they would grow big and beautiful like hers.
Mind you, the other gardeners were out there planting their peppers early, planting them from tiny transplants, and they still grew huge and produced many, many peppers. I just disregarded all of that because my favourite youtube mentor said her stuff and I was trusting her above my senses of sight and logic. So, I planted my peppers late, sure in my success.
It was the worst year for the peppers yet. They wouldn't grow at all. I had no peppers, for the entire season, and in the end, the frost came before any could ripen. I want to say I was saddened, but it was the most valuable year of learning for me. I'm after knowledge first. Then after peppers second.
That was the year of the drought, and even thought most of my plants made it thru, the peppers did exceptionally poor, they could not handle the heat or the lack of water, and something finally clicked in my head. The plant lady had mentioned before that 'peppers need to be watered' and would only plant them in places where she could water them regularly. I, of course, assumed my peppers wouldn't need that much water, because I had mulched them, and expected them to just be cool about it. But, seeing the effect of the drought finally solidified it in my head: Peppers need water. At all times. They need to be watered even if they're mulched, even if it's not that hot, even if they're not close to drying out.
So, this year, I finally made a plan of excessively watering the peppers, even if it wasn't too hot, even if they're mulched, I would provide them with all and any water they could possibly want for, I would do it if it was the last thing I ever tried.
And? Yeah they needed water. It's 11th of June, and my peppers have already produced a first pepper. I have not in my entire career of gardening harvested a pepper so early. I got teary-eyed seeing it grow. Few pepper plants have already grown bigger than their max height last year.
Tumblr media
Some of them have surpassed the height and size of the other gardener's peppers and I'm secretly very smug about it (I have literally no ground to feel smug since I'm the disaster pepper gardener). But anyway! I'm excited to see how big they get, and here's my first pepper! I decided to take it off to get the plant to grow bigger before she produces more fruit.

Best (and worst) companion plants for growing peppers.
My favs:
1. Sweet Alyssum: Underplant your pepper plants with a carpet of sweet alyssum. In addition to enhancing biological control, it’s also beautiful. The small blooms of this low-growing annual plant feed a whole host of good bugs that help a gardener manage pepper pests. Parasitic wasps, syrphid flies, tachinid flies, ladybugs, and lacewings are all found sipping from the blooms. And when they’re not drinking nectar, some of these beneficial insects are eating pests like aphids, whiteflies, and thrips, while others are laying their eggs in pests like hornworms, bud worms, and fruit worms.
2. Onions/garlic/chives: Green peach aphids are among the most common pests of peppers. Interplanting peppers with members of the allium family, including chives, onions, garlic, and scallions, has been shown to deter these small insects from settling on pepper plants to feed. Plant the allium crops around and in between your pepper plants. Or plant your peppers smack in the middle of your onion crop.
3. Nasturtiums: if aphids plague your pepper plants, consider planting a nearby companion planting of nasturtiums. A favorite of aphids, the lovely round leaves of nasturtiums are much preferred by this pest. The aphids opt to feed on the nasturtiums and leave your peppers alone. Since aphids are tiny and can’t travel very far, you’ll want these two plant partners located within a foot or two of each other.

Mastering the Art of Pepper Gardening: A Comprehensive Guide
Tumblr media
Peppers are a type of fruit that come in a variety of shapes, sizes and flavors. They can be eaten raw, cooked, or pickled and are a staple in many cuisines around the world. Peppers are high in vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and iron, and are a great source of dietary fiber as well. Peppers offer a range of health benefits, including improved heart health, better digestion, and anti-inflammatory properties.
How To Grow Peppers
As a self-proclaimed pepper enthusiast, I've learned a thing or two about growing these fiery delights. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, cultivating peppers is a rewarding journey that will spice up your life in more ways than one.
1. Choose the Right Varieties: Before diving into the world of peppers, it's important to select the right varieties based on your taste preferences and growing conditions. From sweet bells to tongue-scorching habaneros, there's a pepper for everyone.
2. Start Seeds Indoors: To give your pepper plants the best head start, begin by sowing the seeds indoors. This allows for a longer growing season and better control over temperature and moisture. Plus, who doesn't love the satisfaction of nurturing tiny seedlings into robust plants?
3. Provide Optimal Growing Conditions: Peppers thrive in warm and sunny environments, so choose a location in your garden that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Additionally, peppers prefer well-draining soil with a pH level around 6.0 to 6.8. Don't forget to water consistently, but avoid overwatering!
Insight: Just like humans, peppers appreciate a little TLC and regular care. Give them the attention they deserve, and they'll reward you with a bountiful harvest.
4. Transplant with Care: Once your seedlings have developed a few sets of true leaves, it's time to transplant them into the garden. Gently loosen the soil around the roots and create holes deep enough to cover the root ball completely. Be sure to space your plants adequately to allow for proper airflow and avoid overcrowding.
5. Feed and Mulch: Peppers are heavy feeders, so nourish your plants with a balanced organic fertilizer every few weeks. Mulching around the base of the plants with organic matter, such as straw or wood chips, helps retain moisture and suppresses weed growth. This keeps your peppers happy and reduces your weeding efforts.
6. Prune and Stake: While not necessary for all pepper varieties, pruning can promote better air circulation and prevent diseases. Remove any damaged or diseased leaves, and consider staking taller plants to provide support as the peppers grow. Your plants will thank you later!
7. Harvest and Enjoy: Once your peppers have reached their desired size and color, it's time to harvest the fruits of your labor. Use a sharp pair of scissors or pruners to cut the peppers, leaving a small stem intact. From there, the possibilities are endless – from vibrant salsas to sizzling stir-fries, let your creativity shine.
8. Save Seeds for Next Year: Don't forget to save seeds from your favorite pepper varieties for future planting. Simply scoop out the seeds, rinse off any remaining pulp, and dry them thoroughly. Store them in a cool, dark place until next year's planting season rolls around.
Now that you have a pepper-growing playbook, it's time to get your hands dirty and embark on this spicy adventure. Remember, gardening is as much about the journey as it is about the end result. So put on your gardening gloves, grab your watering can, and let the peppers ignite your passion for growing!

I love you smile lines and worry lines and grey and white hair and wrinkles and purple spiderweb veins and the process of aging and living in a body that is standing the test of times. I love you experiences that make you wiser and stories that make you laugh, and every little process that happens to get to the point where you have so many memories because you have the fortune to be here and be so radiant
#positivity#pro aging#also i hate you 'anti aging' scams that capitalize on fear of aging. death by 1000000 papercuts for ye#saw a hair video where they restored the salt-and-pepper colour in an older clients hair and it looked SO GOOD at the end#i love when people throw in the towel and embrace their aging however that looks#it isn't productive to shame people who are ashamed of aging and i just want to. celebrate aging#in a world that simultaneously venerates youth and adulthood and hates BOTH you need to find some sense of freedom#as a Young Adult(tm) please please PLEASE older folks seeing this/following me know that i look up to you#older folks i need you to know that your worth NEVER diminished when you added a new number on your birthday cake#and your body and mind and soul NEVER lost worth because it started to creak a little at the joints#and i might be wrong about this because i'm still young but it can be SO tempted to miss your youth when you feel like...#...you've somehow LOST part of yourself by growing older. and so much of aging is about change and some things don't stay the same...#...and that IS scary and i will never once fault somebody for that. but please don't fall into the trap that because you've aged that...#...you somehow have forever lost fundamental pieces of Who You Are and you could never come back from that...#...for your own sake and sanity you deserve to find comfort and solice and understanding in who you still are...#...because you are still - at the core - the same. you can never take this away from yourself#and i know this might ring hollow because i just don't get what it's like to be older#but i have looked at my elders and felt awe at their age and their experiences#and i know what that is like and it's awesome. i just wish more older people knew that so many of us look at you with awe...#...and - if you can believe it - some of us ENVY your age or experiences or even body#i'm watching an 'older' content creator (older by internet standards 🙄) and i envy him for how eventful his life was#i envy that he experienced a different world - one that i have only heard about from my dad because i was too young to remember it#and i admire this person for their wisdom and thoughts because they've come from his experiences living in a Different World#it's that type of stuff that makes me unafraid to keep on living#inspired by following somebody like. twice my age posting about their excitement abiut growing older and !!!!!!! YEAHHHHHH#didn't realize they were closer to my dad's age but that's so cool???????????

Harvested part of the peppers this past weekend, to use in some sauces/veggie mixes for winter.
I didn't sow any fun or unusual varieties this year, didn't really have the patience for it, so I stuck with buying seedlings of my favorite varieties - Kapia and Ruffled Pimento.

Finally peeled and preserved the rest of the garlic cloves from the summer harvest. They’ve been in a bag separated but unpeeled and I’ve been slowly using them until now.
They’re not canned but instead hot vinegar is poured on the peeled cloves and they stay good all year in the fridge. The vinegar makes it to where no bad bacteria can grow on them and the enzymes from the garlic prevent the garlic from absorbing and tasting like vinegar. Just fish out however many cloves you need and use like normal!!
Hardneck cloves are in the jar on the left! They’re so much bigger and I like them so much more. Easier to peel, bigger cloves, and you get garlic scapes (delicious) before harvesting the bulbs. Last year I ordered mostly softneck and a little hardneck and this year I flipped it so that next year I’ll have primarily hardneck :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, a lot of the newly planted garlics have popped! It’s not preferable for them to pop before spring but my weather is unpredictable and it happens every year. The cold will kill them but they’ll come right back in the spring 🌱
