it may be a small throwaway scene that never gets mentioned again but still, for me, one of the top 'if romantic mcdanno not real then why' moments is danny's response to steve inviting him to spend xmas with the mcgarretts in 3x11.

steve is doing what any good friend should do: insisting danny spend the holidays with his family because no one should be spending them alone watching old movies, and at first danny declines politely, one could assume he just doesn't like steve's mother (true) and steve, who is desperate to spend the holidays with danny in any capacity, probably figures mentioning cath will be there too will provide enough of a cover for his desperation, and, as a bonus, should be enough to smooth out the atmosphere of awkward hostility between danny and doris by having a buffer there.

HOWEVER, not only does it have the opposite effect, danny's response is 'I'll try not to kill myself' ???? Wtf seems a bit of an exaggeration to your best friend inviting you to spend xmas with his family, way more than your standard 'can't stand to be around happy people because I'm miserable myself' thing. UNLESS he cannot stand the thought of watching steve being a couple with catherine, with the obvious approval of steve's mom to add insult to injury.

if there were no romantic feelings involved, danny should have been insulted if steve didn't invite him, despite knowing he would be alone, because platonic best friend jealousy is about fear of being left behind once your best friend finds a romantic partner. steve is being the opposite of that neglectful type of friend.

which probably makes things even harder for danny because steve's giant compassionate heart is what he loves most about him, and he wants steve to be happy, he does, but he obviously cannot bear to watch him be happy with someone else. it hurts too much. precisely because he feels about steve differently than a platonic friend should.

H50 3x11: Steve bonds with a boy a little older than Grace whose father is missing. Other characters continuously compare this boy to a young Steve. At the end of the episode, Steve tells the kid to call him in ten years. "I'll save a spot for you at Five-0."

Steve:’’’Cause when we’re on your car it’s usually during work. Here it’s just for fun and relaxing” 

‘‘It’s 7:10am of a Sunday, Where’s the fun and relaxing part?’‘

“We’re taking the scenic route to a nice, and very desert, beach first, then we’re going to spend the morning surfing. Just the two of us”. Steve stopped to swallow another huge bite of his breakfast. Danny smiled at that view.

‘‘What’s so funny?’‘Steve looked at his boyfriend, thumb going to clean the cream on his own lips. ‘‘Oh, You. You’re funny. And adorable, specially with those squirrel cheeks there and everything’‘

‘‘Squirrel cheeks?”.Confused expression there on his face.”Never mind, Babe. It’s a cute thing anyway. Tell me more about that beach, it does seem relaxing and fun indeed”.Danny took a bite of his own food, eyes still on the dork SEAL next to him.

Swallowing, Steve waited 5 seconds before getting back to their itinerary.”So, private beach; Surfing; Homemade sandwiches for lunch, courtesy of the amazing Detective Danny Williams”.Steve lifted his eyebrows, smile accompanied there. Danny bowed his head in a mockering salute, but both knew his food was amazing indeed.

“And to end a perfect morning...’‘Steve stretched out his arm across the car. Opening the glove compartment, smiling at Danny. “Uh...’‘.Danny tried to form a sentence there, ‘‘We’re going to shoot something?’‘.Danny spoke insecure and with confusion.

‘‘Yes, we’re going to sho-- Wait, What?”. The SEAL took a glance at the tiny drawer there, his gun on display.’‘Ow. Oh no, Danny! Behind the gun’‘. Danny moved to pick the weapon, finding what was behind it.

‘‘Oh, this makes more sense’‘.Danny lifted the bottle of lube, shaking it a bit to show that is in his possession. 

“Although, we both gonna shoot something actually..’‘,Steve smirked. before getting another piece of his breakfast on the fork and eating in one bite. “Gross, Steven. That’s just gross. We’re both eating here”. Danny made a face, putting the bottle back and closing the compartment.

“My original plan involved we doing that part before leaving the house, but it would ruin its purpose then’‘. Steve put the rest of his food aside, cleaning his fingers with a napkin.”What do you mean with that?”. Danny did the same. Putting the food boxes together.

‘‘It means that, if we had sex before, you wouldn't be able to go surfing with me after”. The smirk Steve gave him made Danny want to rant at him for no reason. “Haha, you’re hilarious, Steve’’. Danny rolled his eyes.

‘‘Hey, I’m just stating the facts here. We did that last Thanksgiving and you couldn’t participate on the football game before the dinner. Thank God that ‘My-knee-is-acting-up-today’ works every time”. The SEAL chuckled. And truth be told, Steve was right. There was times where Danny couldn't go on with his day without telling the world what they did hours before, but the smug on his face just made Danny’s blood pressure goes up.

“Whatever”, Danny picked his sunglasses and put it on, getting comfortable on his seat and ready to enjoy the scenic route. Steve put his hand on the ignition, but before starting the car, he leaned to the blond, giving him a quick kiss on his cheek. A bit of cream smearing on the blond’s face. Who made a complaining noise, before lifting his hand and cleaning his face the best he could.

Smiling at the sight, of Danny there, ready to enjoy more of their time together. Steve started the car. Ready and eager for another day in paradise with the person he cares the most in the world, his boyfriend, the love of his live, Danny.
