One reason why I hate browsing for hamster supplies online is that I always end up having to lay my eyes on this kind of shit
Tumblr media
what is this
Tumblr media
what the ABSOLUTE FUCK
Tumblr media
IS THIS
It takes a whole two minutes of research to know none of the above are in any way suitable as the habitat of any type of hamster, so anyone who has this type of cage either has done zero research or is knowingly letting an animal suffer, and in neither case should they be allowed to have a pet, ever.
Here’s a decent enclosure for reference

What the fuck.

This is Elias. He’s in a 20gal tank with plenty of enrichment. So far he’s very sweet but we’ll let him settle in.

I accidentally interrupted my hamster during her prime roaming hours last night by turning the light on so I could get up and get some water without falling on my head, and she stared at me like my mere presence stopped her from continuing with her scheduled midnight run on her hammy-wheel. her beady little hammy eyes have never held as much resentment as they did last night. i might actually get murdered by her tonight in retaliation.

Cookie in his favorite cup/hide
He’s excited to soon be out of quarantine!
He is my youngest hamster at the moment, my oldest being Billy and Little Miss being in the middle! (Though she’s the largest by far, I still call her little lol)
They’re all going to be moving into their larger enclosures again soon (all separate, of course)

If I were to prepare a meal for Krillin, I would have to go with something nutritious and enriching. I’ve decided to go with two tablespoons of the Higgins Sunburst food mix for hamsters and gerbils, as well as the Madurai rat and mouse food blocks to ensure he gets enough protein. Variety is so important, as it ensures he will not become a picky eater in the future….

so I have a tiny problem, so my hamster was bleeding from her butt a few days ago and I kept watch over it to see if it continued to bring her to the vet but it stopped but now kind of like idk how to explain it it’s like runny whitish blood, and she doesn’t have a loss of appetite, no loss of fur, and she’s as active as she always is and i use the same food from when I first got her and she’s never done this, plus I don’t completely clean her cage, I just clean out the spots that are dirty, and the vets are closed for the weekend, so I have to wait till Monday, but does anyone have any clue what I should do until Monday?

HAMSTER CARE INFO DUMP
If you followed me for invader zim or mcr or smthing, ignore this ig, Hamsters are one of my special interests, and in honor of getting a new little guy, I wanna do a little proper care post :D
HAMSTER CARE 101:
although little, hamsters need at least 460 inches of floor space in their enclosure. This does not include ramps and shelves. Hamsters are burrowers, not climbers.
Most pet stores sell too smal cages, so I suggest making bin cages, (had one for my first hamster) or Niteangel has some nice ones. (I have one rn for my Hamster Beef, Dib will also receive one.)
FOOD AND WATER:
I recommend getting a food mix, as opposed to pellets. They’re more likely to provide the proper amount of nutrients. You should feed your hamster fresh fruits and veggies, such as cucumber, carrots, spinach, bell pepper, apple, etc. DO NOT feed them garlic, citrus, onions, or most processed foods.
you can use a water bottle or water dish, they need new water everyday. I use a water bottle because he kept knocking over the dish I provided, it’s really just personal preference. Also I recommend providing forage mix and sprays!
SUBSTRATES:
paper bedding for the most part is safe. NO SCENTED BEDDING. I avoid useing wood, even thought there are safe wood shavings, I just find that some times there’re mixed with unsafe wood. THEY NEED AT LEAST 6 INCHES. THE MORE THE BETTER. Also, Sand! Child play sand, reptile sand with no calcium, all work! Some hamster sands are marketed as dust, and these can be very harmful to their lungs, so don’t give them bath dust.
WHEEL AND TOYS:
They must have a wheel! Bigger the better! At least 12 inches for Syrians, and at least 8 inches for dwarfs. (Make sure it’s not wire.) I personally avoid useing a play ball, as their little toes can get caught in the vents. I opt for a play pen instead, I use my dogs old play pen, and fill it with toys and activities. They also need lots of chew toys.
——————————————
And that’s pretty mush the bare minimum for hamsters! Remember to do your own research, and also that hamsters are not beginner pets! They can be complicated, but super fun. :) this is by no means all you need to know for hamster care, and there’s tons more you should know before adopting. This was just some basic care tips. :D
feel free to add anything!

Hamster Homes!!!
When it comes to hamsters bigger is always better!
Hamster cages should be at least 600 square inches; for example a cage 100cm x 50cm works out at about 740 square inches!
However hamsters will thrive in cages that are bigger than this! Too small cages can have a detrimental effect of your hamster, (or even mouse, Guinea pig, degu, gerbil, rat, etc), so it’s important to take their needs into consideration.
For example for my dwarf hamster I converted a detolf case from ikea into an enclosure, and she absolutely loves it! The uninterrupted floor space is very ideal for hamsters as they are very active little critters when they want to be, and so the more space they have to utilise and explore the better!
Please also bare in mind that the majority of cages sold in pet shops are, believe it or not, not ideal for hamsters. Most of them are far too small, both in cage sizes and more often than not the wheels/accessories provided.
Making sure you have these basic needs met can avoid dangerous and stress related behaviours like bat climbing and biting! So you’ll be able to rest assured that your hammie won’t hurt themselves, or keep you up with the sound of chewing!
Things to also consider when choosing your furry friend’s home is that there will be enough room also for bedding! Hamsters love to dig and burrow, so ensuring you provide deep enough bedding for them to do so is also important!
Not only will it help them to instinctively dig and burrow, it also provides warmth for them and helps them to feel more secure!
Some ideal examples as followed, but not limited to;

1). IKEA detolf conversion
2). IKEA Linnmon conversion
3). Pawhut Enclosure
4). Aquarium tank conversion (40 gallon tanks are usually about 640 square inches, so the bigger the better)!
5). Niteangel bigger world MDF terrarium
6). Barney hamster cage
7). Savic Plaza

unsafe situations in hamster posts you should be aware of
this is very off theme for my blog but I had a very strong interest in hamsters that’s recently been reawakened and I’ve noticed some things in popular hamster posts online that are really unsafe and that I think people should be aware of before supporting those posts.
1. unsafe wheels
there are three major things that make a wheel unsafe for a hamster, 1. the surface being made from wire or having raised rungs, 2. the size making the hamster’s back curve while they run, and 3. not being able to keep up with the speed of the wheel either because there’s multiple hamsters on it or it simply goes too fast and they fly off.
I don’t think I really need to explain why a hamster being flung off a speeding surface is unsafe, that’s pretty self explanatory. as for the wire wheels, the gaps in the surface pose 2 dangers. the first being a condition called “bumblefoot”, which is swelling in the paws often caused by uneven pressure or cuts from the wires. this can also occur from cages with wired flooring, obesity, poor sanitation, and overgrown nails.
as for the size of the wheel, the hamster’s back shouldn’t curve. hamsters spend much of their time running, but it’s unnatural for them to have their back curved for that long. to prevent pain the hamster wheel should be large enough for them to run with their back straight.
there’s a more in depth guide with pictures of safe vs unsafe wheels that can be found here: https://fivelittlehams.wixsite.com/correcthamstercare/blank-1/2020/06/07/choosing-the-best-wheel-for-your-hamster
it also mentions some insight on the use of flying saucer wheels that I think is worth considering.
2. cage size & other conditions
there is debate on whether or not it’s economically discriminatory to criticize people for the size of their hamster cage, but I’m going to be frank, I don’t think you should own a hamster if you know you’d be unable to provide suitable care for it. there’s a reason why animal shelters will ask for pictures of the space an animal will be living in before you’re allowed to adopt.
before hamsterhideoutforum made a rule prohibiting criticism on hamster cage size unless it’s literally a travel carrier, the minimum cage size was generally agreed among the hamster care community to be 450 square feet of continuous space (ie not counting levels and tubes).
that means common cages such as crittertrail brand hamster cages are unsuitable for hamsters. keeping a hamster in a cage that is too small can often cause aggression, boredom, and chronic stress. this is commonly observed through bar biting.
as for other conditions, hamster cages should not have wired floors, or if they are wired, they should be covered in a material like cardboard to prevent bumblefoot. there’s even more to be considered that are elaborated on in this article: https://thehamstercare.com/compilation-of-bad-hamster-cages-to-avoid-unsafe/, but size is the main thing I look out for.
3. housing hamsters together
there are several different species of hamsters that are commonly kept as pets. the syrian hamster (also known as golden hamsters and teddy bear hamsters) is probably the most popular in the united states (from what ive seen on social media, robos appear to be a lot more popular in japan), but there are also several species of dwarf hamsters that are commonly kept, those being campbell’s dwarf hamsters (aka russian dwarf), the winter white dwarf, and roborovskis (robos). there’s also chinese hamsters which are less common than the previous and aren’t technically considered dwarf hamsters but are often grouped with them. all of these species are very easy to tell apart by appearance.
Tumblr media
syrian hamsters should never be housed together as adults. 8-10 weeks after they are born they must be separated. they are highly territorial animals and they WILL kill each other. frankly they shouldn’t even be interacting with each other except under the care of a professional breeder, and even then there’s a bunch of rules they need to follow to make sure the mother doesn’t kill and cannibalize the father.
dwarf hamsters can be housed together but only ones of the same sex from the same litter. that being said they still have a capacity to fight and if they display any aggression they should be separated immediately.
chinese hamsters are a gray area, among hamster owners there doesn’t seem to be a conclusive decision on whether or not they can be housed with others. that being said it’s generally advised to not house them together because it’s so uncertain.
4. other animal interactions
hamsters are prey animals. under no circumstances should they be interacting with cats or dogs. even if they are supervised and they appear docile and friendly it can cause a large amount of stress for the hamster.
they shouldn’t be interacting with other prey animals either, such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small rodents, as their behaviors are unpredictable and it would be very easy for one of the animals to get hurt. generally the only animals hamsters will get along with are humans after being tamed and other hamsters that fall in line with the conditions mentioned in the section above.
5. body language
once again, stressing that hamsters are prey animals. when coming home they need time to acclimate to their new environment, and often times they need to be tamed before they are comfortable with human interaction. stress is very dangerous for hamsters as it can actually contribute to illness, such as wet tail.
that’s why its important to recognize stress in hamsters through signs such as suddenly freezing, whipping around suddenly, and bearing teeth. stress can also lead to aggression, which is displayed by the previous behaviors along with hissing, teeth chattering, and nipping or biting.
these behaviors are not cute! if a hamster displays these behaviors it needs to be left alone!
end note
that’s all I can think of for now. I wrote this entire thing on the fly btw so feel free to add onto it, point out any mistakes if I got something wrong, or send an ask if you want any follow up on something. I’ve owned 4 hamsters over the years and spent much of elementary and middle school researching them so I'm happy to share what I know and do any more research if I find any gaps in my knowledge.

Firstly, I apologise for the poor film quality and also because I know this is not the ideal way to hold a hamster - I just wanted to film Polly making this noise which required the use of one hand.
Does any one on the hamster side of tumblr know what this noise means? She makes it when anyone comes near her cage, she makes it whilst she runs around and explores, whilst sitting in my hand and so on! I don’t know if it is a good thing or a bad thing from trying to look it up myself. Thank you in advance.
