What clubs, teams, and other extracurricular everyone is in/will do?
Associated Reading: Past Extracurriculars!
Kai: Kai's only extra thing was temporarily being on the track team his first year, which ofc he quit when he dropped out. Doesn't take up anything new rn due to having his hands full with looking out for Lloyd (and just trying to get through school in one piece), but might get back into track for his final year.
Jay: Is still trying to make Robotics Club a legitimate thing, but until then, Sunni manages to talk him into getting back into doing science fairs (which also feeds into his upcoming extra credit project upupu). Might wind up doing Quiz Bowl or something similar in his last year too, if I'm feeling spicy.
Cole: Was into sports until The Dodgeball Incident, and doesn't take up anything new because a) he hates school, b) it's his last year anyway and c) most of his extra time will taken up by his part-time job at the Rockshot Club (does that count as a club? lol). Sometimes thinks about joining the art club, climbing club, or a dance club, but is lowkey afraid of how he'll be received. Might be able to be talked into doing climbing as a last hurrah, at least.
Zane: Obviously is on the student council, and is a member of the archery club (which has been mentioned in passing a time or two!) and the chess team. Probably would join more stuff if he could/wanted, but being on the Student Council (and the cold reception he receives) is already intimidating enough.
Nya: Also obviously on the council, would join every club if there was enough time in a life, but for now councilwork and her future job at the autobody shop takes up most of her extra time (thank goodness). ...Don't tell her a Debate Team exists, please. (Also might rejoin gymnastics down the line, should the opportunity arise)
Lloyd: The Green Ninja doesn't have time for such frivolous things, tch. ...that being said, his presence as a band member might lead to shenanigans in the future hgffgdd (buuuut he might join archery alongside Zane down the line, since while his bow and arrow skills are pretty good courtesy of his mother, he can still use the extra practice)
Jesse: Beyond councilwork, does not have anything extracurricular due to his job working at his family's place (and eventually furthering his career as a performer), buuut with the former being out of commission rn due to Great Devourer Aftermath, he's got some free time to spare...maybe by joining in on a little ninja training at a certain dojo? (He also was in choir but had to quit because he was too good. The music teacher still mourns his loss.) Might join the theater club for his final year.
Antonia: Beyond councilwork, is/will also be: in the newspaper club, on the yearbook committee, in photography, on the cycling team, on the swim team, runs a very informative blog, and yoga club. She gets up to a lot when not keeping up with ninja or keeping her best friend(s) in one piece hfdfdfghd
Harumi: Right now is just focused on her councilwork, but over the years she also gets into: VOLLEYBALL, National Honor Society (or the Ninjago equivalent), tutoring, history club, math league, debate club, martial arts, occult club, and AP classes...She and Antonia are out here doing the most.
Olivia: Has phased out of her extracurriculars due to the Shark Army being an active threat again, but was in the occult club and the dnd-equivalent club. Also probably should not be told about the Debate Team.
Miranda: Nerd. Pioneers a social media club, eagerly joins Jay's fully realized robotics club down the line, joins the soccer and ping pong teams, and does film club, a coding/website-making extracurricular (easy for her with her hacking skills), anime/manga club, and a graphic design club.
Sunni: Does science fairs like Jay, but also joins the student council cabinet after Zane graduates (Nya becomes Prez, Jesse becomes Vice Prez, and she slots in as the new secretary), partakes in spelling bees, charity work, volleyball (at least for one year, just to try it–she's not very athletic otherwise), tutoring, science bowl, and photography. Just, not all at the same time.
Harleigh: Is not academic smart whatsoever, but finds ways to flaunt her skills in other ways such as: jewelry-making club, fencing team, swim team, and the ceramics club. Also attempts volleyball but only because Sunni is there

Pregnancy scare with the Batboys?
These all happen at different times in their lives. Dick at 24, Jason 26, and Tim 20 because I feel like that’s the ages they’d like have this.
Warning: it’s gotta little bit of everything. Fluff, smut, convenience story robbery, blood, one little crude sex joke.
Dick
“I stopped at the store and got everything we need before the store comes in. Even got those pad tampon things you use,” Dick said waving the box proudly. You rolled your eyes and grabbed the box.
“And what prompted that?” You asked, eyes narrowed.
“A coupon deal on them,” Dick answered and you laughed.
“That makes more sense. Let me put these up and I’ll cook dinner,” you said, walking to the bathroom.
“Nope! I’m cooking,” Dick said happily.
“Okay,” you said planning to help him anyways.
You walked in the bathroom to put the box in your usual drawer only to find it full. When was the last time you needed one? You did the math and realized that it’s been almost 2 months. With your university schedule being crazy and Dick got hurt a few weeks ago, you’d forgotten all about your period.
You skin chilled at the thought. What if you were- what if you were pregnant? You were too young. You were 24 but it felt too young. You were only dating. You hadn’t gotten to the kids talk yet.
“Hey babe, where is the- what’s wrong?” Dick asked from the doorway. He looked at the package in your hand and the matching one in the drawer with confusion.
“Uh, I missed my period last month,” you said and his eyes widened. “I completely forgot.”
“Oh.”
He looked at you frozen. “Wait- are you saying you might be...”
“Maybe,” you answered. “We gotta get tests and everything. And stress can mess it up. And we’ve been using protection every time.”
“Yeah. I’ll run to the store, okay?” He said before hurrying out the door. You sat on the toilet with the box still in hand. What if you were pregnant? Dick was a good guy but he didn’t exactly have a ton of money. He was a part time gymnastics teacher. You were in college.
“Okay I got 4,” Dick said, back in record time. He gave you the bag and watched you.
“Dick?”
“Hu?”
“Get out of the bathroom.”
“Oh right,” he said, leaving and shutting the door. You could hear him pacing as you took the tests. You unlocked the door as you waited for the tests to finish. A neat little row of absolute terror on the side of the bathtub.
“Are they done?” Dick asked anxiously.
“No. We wait two minutes,” you said almost hollowly with stress and he nodded roughly.
“If you are... I’ll be here. I’ll be here for whatever you decide. No matter your choice,” Dick said holding your hands. You gulped.
“Yeah. Thanks. I can’t believe I forgot,” you said with a little laugh. He hugged your shoulders.
“Things have been crazy,” Dick said with a shrug. Your phone alarm went off and you quickly looked at all of the tests. Negative. You both relaxed. You sighed in relief.
“That would have been crazy,” you said with a laugh. Dick laughed a little too. “I am not ready to be a mom.”
“Yeah. Same. I’d need a better job and a better place. Not that there’s anything wrong with our apartment but it’s too small for a baby,” Dick rambled on. He stopped when he noticed your little grin. “You know, I meant what I said. I’m not going anywhere. I’m here for you.”
You didn’t answer but pulled him in for a kiss that Dick eagerly returned before finally pulling away because you were in the bathroom surrounded by used pregnancy tests and boxes of menstrual products.
“I’ll clean up while you get dinner started. Yeah?”
“Sounds like a plan,” Dick said with a kiss to your cheek.
Jason
You’d been thinking about it for a few days with a sense of denial. Your period was late. And you were mentally freaking out. You were too young. I mean, you were 26 but it felt too young! Your relationship was too new! You had been dating for 2 years but it felt too fast!
You hurried down to a corner store that you didn’t normally visit near your apartment to grab some tests. You jumped a little when the bell on the door rang as another customer entered the store. You had been too worried and stressed about picking from the 7 different types of pregnancy tests. Were they all the same or totally different? You just wanted to know ‘baby or naw.’ You grabbed three and put them in a hand basket.
“PUT your hands up where we can see them,” a man yelled and you froze before looking up, your hands above your head, basket on your wrist. “Take off any jewelry and pull out your wallets. We’ll be taking those,” a man in a ski mask said. There were a total of 12 customers and 2 shop clerks.
You carefully pulled your crossbody bag off your shoulder and held it out. A man grabbed it roughly from you and you made a tiny noise that made him smile. He looked you over and you wanted to shrink away.
There was a loud crashing noise as the side glass was broken and a man with a pair of guns blazing stood in the middle. The bright red helmet let you know that it was Jason and you almost sagged in relief. Almost. He pointed the gun at both criminals and shot at their knees. The rubber bullets hit them both in the knees and they fell before you could even move. He quickly punched them both in the head and they lost consciousness. Jason roughly tied them up by the register and everyone started to leave the building quickly while grabbing their things.
Jason grabbed you and pulled you from the building and up to the roof, basket still on your wrist. He rolled his helmet off and looked you over.
“Are you alright?” He asked holding your face in his hands. You grasped his wrists.
“I’m fine. I’m fine,” you reassured him. He looked you over before his eyes fell to the basket. Jason froze as he looked at the contents. A candy bar and 3 pregnancy tests.
“Are you? Why do you have these?” He asked, looking at your face quickly. You sat the basket down.
“Maybe,” you answered quietly. His mouth opened a little as if you speak but he didn’t. “I mean, I’m late.”
“Okay. Alright,” he said nodding. “We just need to test first. God, you were almost shot and you might be pregnant.”
He pulled you tightly in his arms until the armor pressed against you. Jason’s lips pressed against the side of your head. For one of the first times, he looked scared.
Back at your apartment, you could hear Jason pacing as you took the test. You unlocked the door and he came in, staring at them. Neither one of you spoke before the results came in. Negative. You breathed a sigh of relief.
“I would have been there for you. No matter what. But I’m glad that it’s negative. We should plan this stuff, you know? My job... it’s too dangerous,” Jason said carefully.
“I know. We can’t,” you said with a dry smile.
“I’d quit. If you were. So that you and the baby would be safe,” he said and you quickly looked at him.
“You shouldn’t have to,” you said.
“But I would.”
Tim
Tim’s hands were tight on your hips as he thrust in your from behind and you couldn’t stop making little noises. God, were you always this tight? He could barely control himself and the second you clamped around him in pleasure, Tim came as well. Both of you panted as he roughly and slowly thrust through your highs. Tim pushed in deeply before stopping to catch his breath and then pulling out.
“Fuck,” he said in a terrified voice. You turned to look at him confused. “The condom came off.”
Your eyes widened at the implication. “Did you- did you finish inside?” You asked as cold panic flooded your body. You were only using condoms at this point in time.
“Yeah. Definitely,” he said, looking down and in literally any other situation he would have loved the sight before him. His cum leaked out of you and Tim winced.
After a few minutes of trying to finally get the useless condom out, you were almost in full freak out. You were only 20. You couldn’t get pregnant!
“I’ll get plan B. Unless you don’t want it,” Tim said looking at you.
“Good idea. We definitely need that,” you said nodding. “But you can’t go to the store and buy plan B. Timothy Drake-Wayne buys plan B. Playboy like his father Bruce Wayne? I could just see the headline. I’ll go.”
“Smart,” he said. You quickly took a shower and threw on clothes before running down to a pharmacy. Your heart pounded as you asked the pharmacist for a plan B but she simply gave you a box that you paid for. You took the pill before even leaving the store and threw away the evidence as if someone cared what you did.
That night you had some nausea and cramping but were fine otherwise. Tim was extra nice in the next few weeks as you both waited to see if your period would ever come. He put in effort to see you more often and stay off his phone when you were together. Finally you woke up one morning with cramps where actually pleasantly happy to see that you had finally started to bleed. That didn’t happen often.
You told Tim who sagged in relief. He didn’t even know how much tension he held in his body before releasing it. He kissed your cheek and you laughed a little.
“Never buying that brand of condoms again,” he swore.
“I’m making an appointment to get birth control,” you said and he quickly turned to you.
“Really? No more condoms?” Tim said hopefully.
“It’ll take a little while to start working but yeah,” you said with a little smile. “Then I can be your Twinkie instead of your toaster strudel,” you laughed.
“Wow. I wish I could time travel to unhear that,” Tim said covering his face with a hand while laughing.
“You know that’s a good joke,” you laughed pushing his shoulder.
“...yeah,” he said with a grin.

Name: Bryer Rochelle Forrester Fontaine Age: 31 Birthday: March 30, 1990 Occupation: Dancer/Contortionist for the Freakshow Sexuality: Heteroflexible Relationship Status: Single (Divorced) Length of Time in Town: 3 years Positive Traits: Understanding, Caring, Type-A, Up-Front, Helpful, Trustworthy Negative Traits: Sarcastic, Stubborn, Guarded, Type-A,  Bio: tw-abuse
Bryer Rochelle Forrester was born March 30, 1990 in Las Vegas, Nevada to mother Jennifer Olney and father Richard Forrester. Unfortunately, both of her parents were deemed not fit to raise a child near immediately after her birth, and custody was quickly transferred to her grandparents on her mother’s side. Soon after, both of her parents left town together. And, although they regularly sent cards, money, and small gifts for her, Bryer has only seen them three times since she was taken.
With her grandparents, Bryer had a near-perfect life. She was raised in a home with plenty of love, support, and attention, with her grandparents encouraging her to overcome the challenges life had handed her, to come out on top, and to be the absolute best she could be. Nearly from the time she could walk, Bryer was fascinated by dance. Any time someone was dancing on TV, she’d waddle over to the set, getting as close as possible and examining their movements and footwork. Any time music was playing, she was finding ways to dance, often making up her own moves and creating her own shows to perform for her family and anyone else who would watch. Supportive as always, her grandparents enrolled her in dance classes, and Bryer continued to excel from there. To compound her dance lessons, her grandparents also signed her up for gymnastics and cheerleading teams, making sure she was able to experience everything the world had to offer.
Throughout school, Bryer proved herself to be incredibly intelligent, acing every course and balancing what soon turned into a rigorous practice and competition schedule. Under her grandparents’ guidance, she truly excelled in everything she attempted. Despite her parents’ personalities and inability to truly ‘get themselves together’, Bryer turned out to be the complete opposite. She was always getting compliments from teachers, family friends, and other adults on her organization and time-management skills. She proved early on to be a total perfectionist, which has come as both a blessing and a curse. While Bryer both works and focuses hard, fearing failure and doing anything imperfectly, it can often be her downfall, causing her to stress and over-prepare for everything to the point of sickness.
Following graduation from high school, Bryer knew she wanted to pursue dance as a professional career. However, her grandparents insisted she attend college and earn her degree. Not wanting to disappoint, and being the perfectionist she was, Bryer decided to audition for Julliard’s dance program. It came as no shock when she was accepted, on a near-full scholarship. For four years, Bryer worked her ass off, nearly collapsing from exhaustion on several occasions, but always managing to bring herself back from the brink. Upon graduation from Juliard, she made the decision to return to Las Vegas, to be with her elderly grandparents, and to help them out as much as she could. Near immediately she landed a job as a dancer in one of Vegas’ biggest and most well-known shows- Cirque du Soleil. Bryer was beyond thrilled, over the moon, as was her family. Quickly, she became one of the biggest stars of the show, finally having the ability to put her talents to use.
Of course, nothing perfect lasts forever, as Bryer soon learned. After only a few short months with Cirque, she was called into a private meeting with her director, followed by several more, which began to include dinner dates as well. The man made Bryer feel special and loved. The two began to spend more and more time together, and after only six short months of dating, they were married. Everything seemed perfect...Until they weren’t. It began with her husband’s insecurities and excessive control over her- Bryer was required to inform him of every move she made, every purchase, every activity. Then, he began showing up everywhere she was- dinner with friends, her grandparents’ house, even the mall while she was shopping. This control quickly turned to physical incidents which seemed to get worse each time they happened. At the age of 28, only 4 short years after their marriage began, Bryer fled from her husband in the night, taking as much as she could and as much money from their well-endowed account as possible. Knowing her husband would come after her, she did her best to think of any place he wouldn’t look. She’d heard of Santa Ysabel, the land of lawlessness, a place where someone like Bryer Forrester would never be found.
So, after leaving a note for her grandparents, she moved to Santa Ysabel, filed for divorce, and changed her last name to Fontaine, hoping to cover her tracks well enough to continue to evade her obsessive and crazy ex. Once in Santa Ysabel, Bryer found herself a suitable and low-key apartment, with a landlord who accepted cash only payments, with no real paperwork to speak of. Bryer purchased herself a large dog, and obtained a part-time job at the local dance studio. However, after only six months of teaching there, she found herself restless, missing the life of performing again. The Freakshow was well known in town, for its extraordinary performances and awe-inspiring oddities, and at that time, it seemed like the perfect fit for Bryer. So, she went to the Freakshow, auditioned, and was hired immediately. She has worked there for 2.5 years now, and has not looked back. Although she can still be a sweetheart, and flashes of the woman she used to be still shine through, Bryer has developed a hardness to her following everything she went through. She does not trust easily, but still has a heart of gold for anyone willing to take the time to uncover it.

Lucille loved creating from the moment she could hold thongs. She helped her mother repair instruments on her workshop form a young age, and was trusted to do it on her own when she was 10.
She went to camp aged 8, had a terrible first night as she had to sleep on the floor of the Hermes cabin away from her brother, as he had been claimed, but she had not. Luckily, she was comforted by Clara, and was claimed by Hephaestus the next day at breakfast. She thrived in the forge, and loved building things with her siblings, but still struggled because of her colour-blindness. Luckily, the Hephaestus kids were kind and sorted tools and materials with labels saying what they were.
When Lucille went on a quest for her father with Justin when she was 12, going after the Nemean Lion, she managed to grab enough some mane hair for Hephaestus. As a reward, the god of the forge made her welding goggles that corrected her vision, allowing her to see the whole spectrum of colours. She cried when she saw them for the first time. Now she wears her goggles around her neck everywhere she goes, just in case she needs them.

Her paranoia forced her to move away from Greece, as she rightfully feared the ancient stories and monsters were coming for her and her child. Clio uprooted her small family when Clara was 7yrs old, and moved them to a small town in the middle of Maine, getting a job in the Classics department in the University of Maine. However, her paranoia continued to grow, and life at home was no longer an option for Clara.
When she was 10, Clara ran away after being sent a note from an unknown sender about a safe place for people like her. The note led her to Cam Half-Blood, where she stayed year round until she was claimed at 15. Through these five years, she calls home every so often to tell her mother she is safe.

zodiac: aries (march 21st)
sexuality:  bisexual
hometown: arcata, ca
occupation: clerk/teacher at pacific wave surf shop
neighborhood: las olas (roommates with joey & caleb)

—  quick  bio
Hollis grew up on a free love commune.  While he was close to his mother, the environment did not believe in taking “ownership” of children, believing in raising children on a “takes a village” community efforts instead.
His mother raised Hollis with no real sense of “gendered roles”, having believed she was pregnant with a girl at the start.  He is very close to his mother but, until recently, had no idea who his father was.
Hollis was excited to spread his wings outside the commune and left around seventeen, accompanied by his childhood friend. The two traveled and were inseparable until his desire to meet his father brought them on different paths and he went on alone.
Traveled the country through a combo of driving, hiking, and hitch hiking. He stayed with friends of his ‘family’ along with strangers.  He did meet his dad along the way, briefly, but it was rather underwhelming and he found himself looking to leave over anything else. He’s only recently adopted his fathers surname (Campbell).  Most of his ID’s still refer to him as “Hollis Wilde”.
In his travel’s, he stumbled across and befriended a Costa native.  This was not the first time he met someone with delightfully quaint things to say about the town, but this was the first to invite him along. After taking a few months to debate, he decided to give the city a chance.
Currently he works at Pacific Wave as both a sales clerk and an occasional surf teacher.  He much prefers teaching surf to selling but the work is enjoyable enough.  Connecting with customers fuels him
—  personality
negative: energetic,  adventurous , confident
positive:  impulsive ,  fool-hardy , easily-led
mbti: isfp - the adventurer
enneagram: type 3 - the performer
—  extras & facts
Carries his pet sugar glider with him most places - otherwise known as Steven Peabody.
He’s never been picky with what work he will or won’t do and, through taking on odd jobs, has become something of a jack of trades. Practical skills like basic car care, plumbing, construction - anything involving “handiwork”, Hol is good to give it a stab.
Bought a house with Joey a month after coming to Costa, where they now all room together with Caleb.
A very physical person, in line with his interest in sports.  He’s one of those obnoxious kids who likes showing you that he can do backflips and had a fun time doing gymnastics as a younger kid, teaching himself parkour. Surprisingly, he’s got some very good dance moves
Despite that wanderlust, Hollis always finds his way back to nature, especially the ocean.  It’s part of what endeared him to visit Costa. He has many loves but surfing in the sea was his first.  He’ll rise early to get out on the shore.
Famously bad flirt with an inability to close in any scenario. Though he will deny it left right and center, our boy is still holding on to his lil v. card.
— connections
never back down -  eager to please, easily manipulated and desperately drawn to mischief, hollis is the perfect target for someone who enjoys watching a fool make a show of themselves.  he’s the sort to lead the way when trespassing on an abandoned building or the kind who keeps up a long running bet
catch this wave - teaching someone to enjoy the art of surfing will literally make this puppy dog the happiest on the planet. he’s not the best teacher, but he’s got enough enthusiasm to make up for the words he lacks. chances are, he’ll teach you to surf then take you for a beer after
somewhere along the way - ten years of travel left ten years of open connections.  he’s made a show of himself in many odd cities and strives to leave an impression, excited to cultivate a long friends list online.  maybe he fixed a flat for you on his way into town or helped you find that perfect top in a supermarket; it may be mundane but he’s the aggressively social sort with no qualms about approaching first.
perpetually unrequited - dust out the himbo, we have a crossbreed with simp here.  hollis grew up with a school of women and, for all he understands them, he just can’t seem to make that move into something more and it’s even worse with men. everyone’s his friend but he’s utterly failed at finding a lover, giving pieces of his heart to everyone while trying to hide his mooning eyes
tutor the teacher -  he is a very smart, very dumb boy who is always interested in learning more.  do you know how to cook a mean pot roast? solid, he’ll teach you how to read palms. have a knack for maintaining plants? perfect, hollis will show you how to craft a pottery vase. trading skills is his favorite pastime.

HypMic 7 - 9 | Maou-jou 5 - 6 | Akudama Drive 6 - 8 | I7 s2 6 - 9 | Taiso Samurai 5 - 6
HypMic 7
I will never not laugh at the content advisory, haha.
I like Kazuha already. Too bad he’s probably evil…
Oh, is it the day of the DRB in the series already…? Or maybe, because it’s the qualifiers, BB and MTC’s match is on a different day to FP and MTR’s.
Oh? Does Tom know Jakurai well enough to call him “Jakurai-sensei”? (<- middle ground between “Jinguji-sensei/Sensei” and “Jakurai”) Also, Tom uses “ore”.
Ooh, Iris is a motorbike rider, eh? Interesting. I thought they (<- not sure if Iris is a “she” or “he” with a really weird name) were more of a Saburo-type and didn’t bother with things like that, based on their appearance. Update: Someone on Yahoo Answers said based on Iris’s watashi, she is a woman.
Typo fixed! Good job, anime staff! Update: I’m referring to “…darkest hour is just before the down” (sic).
…bukkorosu = “f***in’ slaughter ‘em”. It’s not wrong…it’s just the subbers really like to abuse the F word for MTC. But you knew that already if you got this far…right?
LOL, Ramuda wants to “scratch [Rex’s] back” (figuratively) to…get SNS views? Hahaha.
This Studio Alita is probably a reference to Shinjuku Alta.
Yotsutsuji!!! That was the one big spoiler I got before watching the episode today and I’m so happy I got to see him animated!
(One of) Irihatoma and Degarashi refer to Jakurai as “Jakurai-sensei” as well. Hmm, I never noticed. Update: That’s Degarashi, because Irihatoma speaks to Jakurai alone later this ep.
There’s 50% chance I’m getting this wrong, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say Kazuha is voiced by a veteran VA…one I already know about.
Doppo calls Kazuha by his first name…That upgrade means their relationship escalated quickly (or this is a quirk of HypMic in general, since I noticed most characters are on first name basis with each other). Also, it’s cute Doppo finally has someone in his corner. No other part of the franchise has one, to my memory. Update: It might actually be “Kazuha-kun”…but I’m still surprised though. Update 2: It’s both, actually.
I’ve listened to the phrase “some random guy” several times from Hifumi’s mouth and all I can figure out is the “yatsu” at the end. (Doesn’t help my ears blocked themselves up again, although it’s less than it used to be.)
Harumi Wharf.
R? On a helicopter landing pad?
…uh oh. I was right when I thought Kazuha was going to be evil. Also, Doppler shift/effect. Update: “Doppler” is clearly a pun on “Doppo”.
Hmm? “Hey, Doppo” from “yaa”…it doesn’t have a name referred in there. It’s a small but odd thing to do. (I remember a professional translator was complaining that people with intermediate Japanese were giving them flak for translating things “wrong”, but what I do here is analysis for my future and edificiation. I’m not here to knock down pro translators’ doors and demand a refund, because I’m trying to go pro to atone for my sins as a scanlator.)
The soundtrack’s slightly sinister tone, plus the fact I figured the culprit well before Doppo did, makes me slightly scared…for MTR.
I realised they skimped on the budget…this “hot off the car chase” line seems more like an MTC line, doesn’t it…?...Yeah, it’s almost word for word for MTC in DRB+. Maybe the subbers rushed and used this translation (this link I put here) rather than their actual lyrics…? I will have to get to the bottom of this. Update: Turns out the translation is slightly different, but…yes, there is reference to a car chase in the start of Shinjuku Style. (Sorry, I don’t know every lyrics of every song off the top of my head.)
…wow, this got really Doppo-centric. I’ve never seen the leader relinquish their position when it comes to “leading into battle” before. It just goes to show the staff really do pay attention to how popular Doppo is.
Note “Doppo” means “walk alone”, roughly speaking, hence the “solitary” line.
This song is very, very faithful to its original lyrics, because I was trying to look at Hifumi’s “mixing paint” line and it pretty much matches.
Hifumi’s “my men”, LOL.
Kazuha = “one leaf”, hence the “leaves” in one of Jakurai’s lines.
I cringe every time I hear screaming coming from this episode, y’know…?
…oh dear. MTC’s plot actually bled into MTR’s.
I already knew from browsing Twitter earlier today that Kizuna was going to become FP’s today, but hearing it is another matter entirely.
Kosuke Miyoshi is Kazuha. Apparently, this guy also voiced Mashirao Ojiro (the tail guy) from BnHA, but that’s his only major role…so I was right in that I knew him, but wrong in that he was, again, a relative rookie in comparison to most.
Apparently FP’s sign is a peace sign sideways to represent an F, but…it’s just a sideways peace sign to me…
…how is Dice’s bead ornament attached to him? Is it on his hair, on his ear, on the skin behind his ear…? I was trying to replicate his outfit and got stuck on how to represent it, so I ended up opting for trying (and failing) to do a small braid on the right side.
IWGP shows up this season…it’s the song with the “hoo!” noise BB perform in this episode.
LOL, “Dead men tell no tales” is a perfect saying for MTC.
Akudama 6
Is there a movie called “Brother”…? There’s apparently one that’s the plural of that, but not that itself.
If HypMic likes the F bomb, then Akudama like the S word.
I-Is it just me or is the choreography sped up at some points in this episode…? It’s a bit disorienting to come back to.
I thought the kid was a robot…but close enough.
Oh no! Why does the teacher always have to die for the student to become stronger???
Kairaku/shugi -> pleasure/doctrine (if I didn’t somehow misunderstand the shark’s kanji combo),
The part after the ED looks a little too long…keep watching.
The Japanese says “Lost Children”, but the English says “The City of Lost Children”, probably referring to this French sci-fi film.
I7 s2 6
I like how Gaku is taking special offence to Yamato’s comments about him being a playboy.
Re:vale-san. I never noticed until now.
“I’m already looking forward to it.” That’s how I would translate Tsumugi’s “I’m already excited”.
“…who could possibly complain?” – I think Mitsuki might.
The pun in the MEZZO show is that tai (group/squad) sounds the same as tai (want to ~). Rabbinsta is obviously Instagram + Rabbit (Chat?).
Oh my gosh! It’s the Yotsuba sister!
Mitsuki’s shopping trip OST is nice, man. This piano.
This episode has a really great sense of danger and foreboding for the future.
I7 s2 7
Perfection Gimmick. Never heard it in the anime before.
Even the ramen house’s name is a play on “Idolish7”.
LOL, Yamato sure turned that comment around.
The sign talking about beer says something about coupons below it. (It went by too fast and my CR app’s kinda fiddly, so I can’t really go back…)
Kimi to Ai na Night (pun on Idolish7, aka “AiNana”, again).
Mitsuki, no one hates you! You’re just imagining it all!
I7 s2 8
Momo hugely resembles Sasara, right down to the highlights on the hair…
“…you’re so handsome…” – I’m dying on the inside here, people! *laps up the BL pandering with a derpy smile on my face*
Banri and Tsumugi haven’t been focussed on lately…they’re clearly doing something regarding Banri’s ties with Re:vale, but I can’t quite figure out what that “something” is.
Why is there a basketball and a football in the back of the Takanashi office…?
Please don’t run in heels, Tsumugi…
“I love Idolish7!” - Ah, despite my quibbles, Tsumugi is good after all.
“making one’s best exertions” – Why do those words on the cup worry me a bit…?
Isn’t “I’m watching you” a creepy statement…?
Apparently Tamaki’s symbol is mp (mezzo pianissimo), hence Sougo’s words.
…my gosh! Aya’s foster father is Kujou?!
I7 s2 9
If I heard it right, Tenn’s line was “I can be your idol”, not “your prince”.
“Older Izumi” - …ah, poor Mitsuki.
“Damn you, sexy beast…” – LOL!
…aw, I think this is the first time my heart has been lightened by Tsunashi’s laugh. He’s a good boy.
The chibis…I’m still trying to get used to them…
As a song once said, “You can’t please everyone so you just gotta please yourself.” (Blah blah blah, something about garden parties…)
Takao what now???...okay, Takao Dayuu.
…You’re lucky that wasn’t Tenn doing Takao Dayuu. It would’ve been very “Gentaro does his courtesan voice” if it was.
Nagi doesn’t overpronounce things as much in this season. It’s…pleasant, actually. Give me more of that.
Nagi’s “Oh my god!” was hilarious.
Taiso 5
Ra (ら) and ro (ろ) look kinda similar in hiragana.
Even without the audio, I can guess the words were “yarubeki koto” (things you should do) -> shachihoko.
The texts are written in gyaru-moji. Gyaru-moji is basically indecipherable to anyone who doesn’t know how it works – kind of like the common teen vernacular, to be honest (LOL…?) – and so the subs actually kind of ruin the confusingness of it all, but they did slightly better when they went “UR”.
Movie shiritori! But…has it really been half a year since Leo started? I feel slightly robbed about that plotline with the Men in Black right now…(then again, HypMic is just as bad about important plotlines, if not worse, so…I’m going to be patient and not complain.)
July 5th…Rei is a Cancer…?
They’re…finally moving on this Men in Black plotline! I only complained two points ago! Thank you, staff, for listening to my complaints (…?).
Moon Land finished recently, so I wonder if I’ll lose interest in this anime from here on out…? There was a Pommel Horse Prince in that.
Moon Land taught me that gymnastics has a lot of skills named after their creators, much like the Aragaki previously. The score is out of 10 for both D (difficulty) and E (execution), meaning a 20 is the best you can do, but the judges can get really picky...
The word for “vault” literally means “leaping/jumping horse”…makes sense.
Some of these names are names I’m familiar with from Moon Land already…but I never remember what the skills look like.
…welp, Leo just proved he really is a ninja after all.
Dr Stone’s s2 had its ED announced to be “Koe?” by Hatena and “Yume?” here really makes a theme…does Hatena give all their song titles question marks on the end?
Taiso 6
Colour gangs? Like in IWGP?
It’s nice to see they’re (Jotaro and Rei) communicating properly for the first time in possibly this entire anime.
On the wall, that thing is an evacuation map…of some sort.
…I’ve always wondered: if a bird eats chicken, does that count as cannibalism?
This is like thw Makkachin incident all over again (in YoI).
“…there’s no reason for you to grin and bear it.”
…Leo and Jotaro, both are so dense! Boys *shakes head*.
BB? More like ET (LOL)!
Maou-jou 5
…I didn’t even notice the cast was all dudes bar the princess at this point.
Tatakau Onnatachi. It could mean “fighting women” or “female warriors”.
I’m still vaguely pissed that Kirito is here under my nose…darn Demon King!!!
One of the harpy’s recent worries was that she wanted to become friends with the princess…That’s kinda cute…
Didn’t Syalis already get the coffin that one time? Or did it get confiscated?
*eyes sparkle* Cloud…I’d like to sleep on a cloud…*dreamy look on face* Cloud.
This is basically Princess, ‘Tis Time for Torture in reverse.
Is it “make do” or “make due”…?
I don’t think I need to explain the joke where the harpy is happy.
Gendo pose!
I wonder if the bed or the sheets will talk to her (Syalis) someday?
Maou-jou 6
The New Gearbolt’s quote is “guruguru dokkan”, which is just a bunch of sound effects. It would translate to something like “whir-whir-thud”.
Underwear episodes are some of the worst episodes ever…they’re so juvenile…I dropped at least one series based on the underwear episode alone.
Ah! The seal on the ice monster’s shoulder! Too cute!
How can a mechanical princess mecha (…thing?) have worries?
LOL, never underestimate the hilarity of the teddy demons ganging up on the Demon King.
I like how the Japanese pointed out the demons only moved the princess.
HypMic 8
I thought the robberies were Kazuha’s doing…? Or is this a separate case?
Samatoki answering his phone with his feet up…LOL, there’s just something funny about it. It shows he’s just so badass, he can get away with it.
Riou’s hacking (?) skills come to the fore again. (Or is that listening to enemy intel?)
Ooh, Iris is sassy. I love her already.
…er, Samatoki? Blowing cigarette smoke into Jyuto’s face is just rude…
“…don’t hang up your gloves.” – Considering Jyuto has his red gloves…LOL.
What the heck is that backing track when the 2nd car moved out? That’s a cool track.
Ah! Iris is a Saburo-type…LOL, Saburo’s fake identity.
“a cop who’s in with the yakuza” - Wow, way to diss your own teammate, Samatoki.
For a guy who was only just in the water, Riou doesn’t even look wet.
“2 DIE 4” – Hmm? So did the anime staff know what Riou’s 2nd round song title was at the time…? Update: Judging by the name “Requiem” dropped in the next episode, I would say yes.
“…f*** the police…” - Wow, way to diss your own teammate, Samatoki. X2
Hmm? In Riou’s rap bit near the end, he goes “mad warrior” and that rhymes (in a very loose way of speaking) with “Mad Trigger”. The English didn’t keep that.
I remember seeing a spoiler which said that line (the one about slaves)…but seriously, Jyuto is such a “sexy revenge cop” (as someone once said – I think it might be Slug, or an anon to Slug) that literally nothing else seems to matter about him.
Why do they subtitle the laughing??? I still have no idea.
“Sgt. Iruma”? The guy just says “Iruma-san”. Is he a sergant or some other rank? Update: Yes. (As in, he is a sergant.)
I’ve never actually seen Ramuda sleep in a bed before, come to think of it. Does he not have a bed?
I would assume Gentaro is going…but he said he won’t be going, then negated that and then negated it again. Unless the 2nd time was him admitting it was a lie the first time…is he going or not???
“shinsetsu no human” – (Spoilers for later on/manga)…Yes, that’s actually what Ramuda says. It’s as if Ramuda subtly admits, right there, he isn’t human.
Nodo = throat…If this were translated more literally, it would sound pretty clunky.
“…rappa no inochi…paa!” – Yep, the subbers got the gist of the joke there.
Dice is basically a worm at this point…He’s squirming like one, anyway.
That “number of pips facing up” thing has got to be foreshadowing for something, y’know? Nothing in a story ever goes to waste. Also, it’s likely the dice are weighted or something…
…yep, there you go.
That voice Gentaro used for “I despise lies” was amusing…because it’s so different to his normal voice, and because Gentaro is a serial liar.
The 2nd song…which I already know is called “JACKPOT” from browsing Twitter earlier today…was a bunch of fun.
Udagawacho.
Hmm…emphasis on the candy. I wonder what that means? (<- already knows, I just want to keep it a secret from you, dear reader, if you don’t know it too)
ANIME SHOP is so clearly a pun on Animate, including the colours, that I can’t even…LOL.
FP’s Kizuna sounds distinctly different to the others…probably because of Ramuda. It’s mostly Ramuda carrying the tune there.
“Life is what you make it.” – Hmm, an interesting quote for sure.
HypMic 9
…welp, they don’t call it Fling Posse for nothin’.
I didn’t believe my ears, so I went and listened to it again. Sure enough, Ichiro calls Jakurai -san, not -sensei.
Ramuda’s normal voice! Things are getting serious~!
“Hifuming”? Is that a deliberate choice on the translators’ part? Or is it a mishearing?
…I’m laughing at how Samatoki called Ichiro a “hypocritical piece of s***”. I know the “s***” part is correct at minimum from the audio.
I believe Samatoki said -san, not -sama when he asked for an honorific. Hmm, interesting.
I knew this would get animated, but…I still can’t believe I’m watching it! Amazing…absolutely amazing.
If you’re wondering…yes, that long thing is her entire title and name. It’s said the name “Kadenokouji” is the longest Japanese surname in existence.
I remember reading a tweet earlier today that said somebody wanted “Altercation! Altercation! Altercation!” as a song title…and now I LOL, because the subbers made Gentaro say the exact same word.
Hmm…I only just noticed BB are the only ones with bags. They probably came last, but who took the others’ bags into Chuoku…? Update: Some of the others did have bags, I just never spotted them. For instance, Riou is carrying a large black rectangular bag, but Samatoki and Jyuto don’t have any. Jakurai has the bag from his TDD days.
The 2nd DRB brackets got announced today. BB vs DH, MTR vs BAT, FP vs MTC, rolling out across Japan (and Japan only due to COVID) in 2021.
“What happened between you and him?” - I was going “who?” in Cantonese (as I sometimes do), but turns out they’re just referring to Samatoki.
This is exactly as it played out in the drama tracks and manga…exactly what I was waiting for all this time! So good, dangit!
LOL, in the future, we will have camera drones working our concerts like they do in the DRBs…I think (?)
I wonder what Dice is thinking right now, seeing Otome on the screen…hmm…
…gah! Airhorn! Airhorn to the ears! *tilts to side due to sound*
I still kind of remember Slug’s take on the final battle…”The popo? More like the poopoo!” (or something like that). *sniggers*
The little barking bit after Jiro’s verse was…kinda cute, actually.
…ow, these are some burn-ass words. See? This is the power of the DRB!
…eh? Riou’s mic has his MC name on it. Don’t think I’ve seen that in any other part of the series.
Hoh, Riou even made references to Saburo’s character songs.
You can see “Hc” on Samatoki’s mic too…probably another case of his MC name, but partially obscured by his hand.
Aw, “Samatoki no sabaku toki” is a good lyric. Why couldn’t you try to keep that, instead of translating it literally to “judgement day for Samatoki”?
You can hear a thumping beat in the background when Samatoki prepares himself. That seems to be a similar way to how ARB treats this stuff.
“I’m THE Samatoki” – “Samatoki-sama da”.
I think it was really cool to show Samatoki handing the song over to Riou, but it also indicates there’s a disjunct in the lyrics that would cause such a thing. From this, maybe Riou is MTC’s weak link…?
Skeletons with katanas! Is that not cool?!?
…hey, that joined words thing Ichiro does…I would assume that’s what Rhyme Strike looks like in the HypMic universe?
Notice Samatoki took the word “signal” from Ichiro’s part and put it into his own one.
“Today is a good day to die.” – *eyes bulge* Oh…gosh. What a quote. Update: Someone theorised Ichijiku wrote these titles (the last 2), but someone else – like me – theorised this quote was what FP and M fans thought for this battle.
Akudama 7
…that’s one twisted kid.
Never threaten to kill a kid who can regenerate far better than you, Hoodlum.
Brawler is still in the OP…it’s kind of saddening to see him now.
I noticed a certain character appears on the Executioners’ hands if you pause at the right moment in the OP. It’s the first character in shori (management).
Bunny: set meal/Shark: roasted meat (yakiniku)
…This sounds a heck of a lot like the genbaku dome (Hiroshima Peace Park).
Bunny and Shark’s shirts together: Idiot -> Shark: Bone
Actually, this also reminds me of the Osaka Expo held in 1970. I loved writing about that event – it was just so fun to write about.
This anime is like Appare-Ranman’s sequel, except without the racing and crazy racial stereotypes (although there are still crazy stereotypes).
…whoa! This scene is going on the end of year list for sure. Just…have to remember this scene, where all the children disappeared, exists.
…”The City of Lost Children” is an apt title for this episode.
(HypMic spoilers!) I wonder if they’ll reveal that Ramuda is a clone in what’s left of the HypMic anime?
…oof, Doctor’s a filthy traitor!
Rule number 1 of fighting: never yell out “Smokescreen!” when the smokescreen is meant to cover you.
…LOL, dark censorship bar. Please wait for the Blu-Rays to see this scene uncensored.
What the heck?! The countdown went from 7 to 0 so fast!
Akudama 8
Black Rain, huh? *checks* It’s a movie about a pair of New York policemen who have to save a Japanese gangster from his death.
…don’t jinx it, Swindler!
Your brother isn’t on the moon, Sister. It’s just your dreams on there.
Notice “Neo Lake Biwa” actually has “Reiku” in its name, as opposed to, say, “mizuumi” or “ike” (the Japanese equivalent).
You can still see where Doctor stitched herself up.
What did Doctor “hold on to”?
Way to monologue through the whole morality thing… (<- not as satisfied as they would like from this scene)
I wonder if the seal is electronically tracked…
Tsubo = pot, vase…*thinks about drugs* (Not that pot.)
“…I’ll make you into a real man.” – More like a eunuch, LOL. (partially sarcastic)
I recall from Sarazanmai that “pair look” is the term for “twinsies” in Japanese.
Oh! Swindler kind of looks like the Executioner Boss now.
…I find it ironic that Swindler had long hair up until not too long ago.
Can to the eye! Ouch! That’s gotta be worse than a lightsaber…er, jitte to the eye!
This makes me wonder…was Courier a rich kid once…?

Upper East Side
Coming back from Rome was a reverse culture shock. My roommates moved to a new apartment on the Upper East Side on 65th and 1st, we were on the 1st floor. It’s a quiet neighborhood. This apartment had a spiral staircase that went to the basement where our one roommate stayed. She had her own bathroom and paid a bit more for it. Our other roommate had a room near the kitchen. I ended up living in the living room.
It was spacious but I didn’t have a door and our friend who lived in the basement’s boyfriend at the time knew how to make a wall, from sheet rock. So he built a wall and door that divided us. Our kitchen was the smallest kitchen ever, that us three could not be in it together. The bathroom was the tiniest bathroom as well. It was an old building.
I have a photo of me sitting on top of the refrigerator hanging out. The best part of this apartment was the rooftop in our building as well as the location, Manhattan. Three avenues away from the East River and three avenues away from Central Park. I had my dog Scrappy at the time and both were perfect for him. One of our housemates lived near her college, Hunter. The other housemate lived by her job which was a baby gym, she was a gymnastics teacher. I was happy to live with good friends and have a place after being gone for about 5 months.
My dog scrappy lived there while I was abroad and my roommates took care of him. He gets mad if I leave him but forgives in due time. He’s good at adapting and treating who ever is in front of him like his owner. He would sneak out of my bed and go into my housemate’s bed.
I had a favorite coffee shop called Java girl where I would write. I brought my bike for the first time to the city and was able to ride it from the Upper East down to Financial District,  an easy 30 minute bike ride to school.
I didn’t have a job when I got back, I was willing to bag groceries and do whatever. After a couple weeks my old job on stone street needed a host again. So I was back to making money. I remember being so broke that I couldn’t afford a metro-card ride. One time wanting to hangout with friends, I remember my roommate worked at this amazing vegan spot in Chelsea that doesn’t exist anymore called The Simple Kitchen. We walked from 65th East to a yoga to the people session (which was donation based)  on 37th, then to Simple Kitchen on west 17th (Our friend didn’t charge us), and then a lone I walked back up to East 65th and crashed in bed even though we were supposed to go out. The yoga, the wine, and the walking from East to West to East really killed me. The time I got home, my housemate who closed the restaurant and took train just got home, so it took me the same amount of time walking. The tragedy of not having a bike was real.
I came back to being an assistant pledge mom for our sorority, Sigma Delta Tau, which kept me active. I got the position by sending a video where I said a speech in Rome. Being preoccupied in helping those girls was an awesome reset. I had this fear of missing out but when I got back, all my old sorority friends weren’t involved anymore. I made some new ones. I was still single but what I came home to were great friends and family.
My style changed in Italy (it got better), I was able to cook for my friends (got better), and my new friends came into my life (which was enriching). Like my friend who went to Manhattan College and some friends who came to visit New York City. So many people want to visit New York and I played tour guide for a few of them.
After our semester finally ended we had a girl come to sublet our housemate’s room because she left to study abroad in Chile. Our new roommate was from New Jersey, but her ethnicity was Argentinian and family was from Israel. So she spoke English, Spanish, and Hebrew. Argentina is my dream country. She was interesting and fun. Summer in the city was really fun on our roof and in Central Park on the daily. My favorite part about hanging out on both, is it’s a free way to have fun.
I even kept healthy habits like running everyday like I did on the Tiber but now it was The East River of the Upper East Side. While I was in the city for the summer I missed major lifetime events like Bonaroo (all my friends talked about for years)  and a cross country road trip (that I still want to do in life) all for an accounting class (I took to graduate on time) which I ended up failing. It made me so depressed, but that night I found 50 Euro on the ground in Chinatown. It cheered me up, especially because it exchanges to $60. As a New York City student, that can really last you. I met my friends from the program in New York that evening and had dinner, and tried to forget about Accounting, even though it was hard to.
I had intentions my senior year that was coming up. I needed a new place to live and was looking to save money. So Jersey was a good option. I desperately needed an internship as I was approaching obtaining my degree and needed it for my last set of credits. Retaking accounting as well as all my other business courses of course, was on my agenda. Lastly, my last year of my college career was happening so I just wanted to make the most of it. I was finally turning 21 and after this final year, we all didn’t know where we’d end up. Last time I lived with the girls.  It was an end of an Era Upper East Side, and was bittersweet.

An Injection of Fairy Dust
Once upon a time, there was a young girl… Though before her there had been, of course, her parents and their parents and so on and so forth. But this isn't really a story about them. Get your priorities sorted people.
The girl was named Cassandra Lang, and she was the fairest in the land! Or at least she was for a while in her kindergarten class. She rarely heard her full name unless she did something so terribly awful or panic inducing that her parents would call it out to her - for the most part, she came not to like hearing her full name. She was always just Cassie.
She was quick, and brave, and tremendously impulsive. Cassie was never one to look back, she always had to look forwards and above all else she had to keep on moving. She was a prankster, and maybe a bit of a thief - but not a very good one. She had to no poker face at this time, completely unable to hide her opinions and emotions. Boy, did everyone in the neighbourhood know when Cassie Lang was outraged. She was quick and light on her feet, often clumsy though. She didn't lack grace, it was just half the time it seemed like she wasn't used to the size of her body. As though her arms or legs were either shorter or longer than she had recalled. During her childhood many tables were bumped into, and many things were knocked to the floor.
She was stubborn, and impetuous. Cassie never backed down from anything, and she always liked a joke more than anything else and rarely knew when to shut her mouth. But above all else, the little girl prided herself on being kind. Just that. If she had nothing else, at least she could be kind. How awful then, that the small girl with the warm heart broke it so quickly and easily.
Cassie Lang found that as the years moved on and she went to school that she seemed to be slowing down. She discovered whole new worlds - but dark worlds, worlds of pain and worry. The little girl took many trips with her parents to meet ADULTS who could help work out the problem. These new ADULTS were not like the ADULTS at school - they were teachers and they were warm and funny, and despite Cassie's chatting being a distraction they still liked her. These ADULTS wore long coats and jackets, they had their names on their door, they had instruments they used to poke and prod Cassie. They were doctors, and they told her parents she was incredibly ill. Broken heart. Or something like that, that's what it boiled down to.
Everything Cassie used to be able to do - running, jumping, going on adventures, always moving forwards…. She could no longer do those. Not at the same pace as before and not without difficultly. The little girl was just that. She was LITTLE, and so worries were quite foreign in her mind and before they never really stayed there. But looking at her parents sometimes, the young Cassie could see them exchange looks of fear and that made Cassie scared. This was her mother and her daddy, her heroes, her everything. Nothing ever frightened them. Nothing at all. Except for little Cassie's heart.
She hated that look, and did all she could to make sure she never had to see it again. She hid some of her pain, but not all - she still had not mastered her poker face and it was too unbearable not to tell. However Cassie did manage to slow herself down, tried changing herself to be more careful. She took excitement from others tales - tales from her father most especially. Her daddy the daring thief, the genius, the hero. Oh she loved her mother as well, loved to be comforted in her mothers arms and to go and play games with her. But it was never quite the same. Her daddy loved the same things as Cassie herself, and they shared secrets and stories. Something strong. And as she worked hard to get better, improvements were seen.
Then one day, the little girl's world fell apart and a new one was built. One day, she collapsed at school and saw nothing but darkness, but black until she woke up in a room that was filled with people wearing long white coats, or strange pyjama type clothes. Half of the carried clipboards, the others had needles (and Cassie hated needles, though by this point the little girl had seen more than her share what with all the tests the ADULTS had put her through). The new world she found herself in for months was clinical and cold. Her parents lightened the new world when they visited, but her parents could not always be there - and now more than ever Cassie worked on keeping a straight face and keeping her worrying inside. Her parents looked so old to Cassie when she was in the hospital. They looked so close to breaking themselves that sometimes she wanted to scream- to scream at the doctors to help her parents, don't they look so old now? And there's this look in their eyes that they have whenever they see me! I'm not the sick one THEY ARE. Or maybe to scream at her mother, to tell her that it wasn't her fault Cassie was sick, and it wasn't Cassie's fault either - and it DEFINITELY wasn't her daddy's fault so why did they have to keep arguing? Even if they never had full on fights in the little girl's room she could tell she could tell by looking at them that things had changed.
But she didn't give up, and neither did the doctors. Neither did the little girls daddy, the little thief himself - who stole a certain kind of fairy dust to make the little girl better. It was a risky thing to do, and one Cassie only heard about in whispers between herself and her father. This fairy dust was known as PYM PARTICLES and it was very special. It was what had given her daddy special powers, helped him be the hero she knew he could be - and now he had taken it for her. They discussed all of that and more (some of the risks, that it might not work, that this would be special and they had to take care not to tell her mother). And little by little, the little girl was given the little particles that made many others before her little.
It didn't work at first, and often the young girl felt great pain and great loss. Even when she grew older, Cassie would have nightmares of those long days and nights spent in the hospital. It was terrifying to have no control and to just have to watch and listen. To see her parents fall apart, to see them trying to cling to her to stay together and she had to live she simply had to because what were they going to do without her?!
The day she was let out of the hospital was more of a relief than anything else. Cassie was too shocked and overwhelmed to really feel or understand more than the fact she was cured. The fairy dust had done its job and the little girl was no longer so little. A teenager now, she was ready to hit the world running. The fairy dust had cured her broken heart, and now there was a lot for her to catch up on.
Things weren't the same as before. They weren't worse, they weren't really better either - they were just different and difficult at first. Her parents split up and that of course was awful, but Cassie had seen them together and fighting and perhaps it was just for the best. She didn't like seeing them hurt, and hated seeing them hurt each other. There was only so much of Cassie to go around, and she wasn't very good at patching up wounds. She tried her best, and for a long time things at least ran smoothly for the young teen. She stayed with her mother, and she caught up on her school work and they visited places where Cassie learned a lot. Her mother took her shopping, and that was fun, and she took her to gymnastics and dancing classes too (though that had required a lot of persuasion for Cassie had seen that SCARED look in her mothers eyes when she spoke of such things, like even just thinking of such classes could break her heart once more).
More exciting and happier days were spent when she stayed with her father. Sometimes that didn't happen often, for he would be away for 'work'. Cassie knew that occasionally that was true. Other times she knew he was in jail, and that wasn't so fun for either of them. Other times still she knew he was hurt and didn't want her to see him that way. But she'd visit on those occasions anyways, and got good at patching him up. They'd play games, he'd help her with her work, they'd hang out…. And when Cassie COULD she stole more pym particles.
The little girl wasn't addicted, there was no craving for injecting herself and no awful feeling or gut-wrenching pain if she went without pym particles for days. And it was an easy thought to brush aside. She was a thief of opportunity, and stole the fairy dust for many reasons. Or maybe just one large reason. To be like her father. To become a hero, to become someone more than the girl who had always been so careful and who had spent so much time in hospital. A chance to be kind to even more people, to reach out and help them. A chance to go out and make both her parents proud, an adventure. As she grew older and began to work her way through school years…. Nothing happened. She was the same person as always. Cassie Lang, nothing more and nothing less. Nothing special, nothing terrible either. Just a girl with a strange family, and a desire for more.
As the years passed, things at home grew strained. Her mother met SOMEONE ELSE. He was not a bad man, but he was not her father and he was strict and had trouble opening up. He was a logical man, and a law-abiding man and he did not often have nice things to say about Cassie’s father. But he made her mother happy, and he was never cruel or mocking with her. She was happy her mother was happy - but when the pair married they fought for sole custody, they fought to keep her away from her father. That was her first true fight within her family, and it was sadly not the last Cassie would have with her mother. Her mother and step-father eventually relented, knowing her daddy cared for her and that Cass would run to him anyway - stopping custody would do nothing but sour their relationship with Cass. And so this bad thing passed, but seeds of worry had been sown. Her mother and step-father had shown through the trial how they hated and feared those who were different, vigilantes, and those were the very people Cassie believed in and wished to be the most.
It wasn't until she was quite set in her ways of being a teenager that the extraordinary happened, and one night the little girl became a GIANT. Quite literally.
Cassie Lang had grown up surrounded by heroes, extensions of her family through her father. Her life did not change completely this one night, but perhaps it was one of the most important things that had ever happened to her - that ever would. She knew about heroes, and loved all those she met and had cheered them on as best she could because that's what the little girl did. She wasn't much of a nurse, much of a pep-talker, much of a fighter. But she was there and she could support them. On this one night a door opened, one she had dreamed about and wished was there but hadn't seen before. Instead of just watching the heroes Cassie became one herself. A YOUNG AVENGER. That suited her perfectly.
The little lost girl had grown tremendously from the scared child in the hospital to one out there fighting to make others did end up in such a sorry state. Doing what she could to be kind - with the kindest, bravest young avengers she had ever met. People she looked up to and aspired to be like. And one day, maybe one day, she’d really make them proud - her team-mates, all those heroes she had met, her mother. She always made her daddy proud at least, Cassie would never doubt that.

How to Survive When School is Back in Session [MarketHer Ep. 47]
In case you haven't noticed yet, we haven't posted a podcast recently.
Instead, we've been sharing personal experiences to give a bit of a one-on-one approach to MarketHer.
Last week, Britt shared the joys of her new office and the different spaces some of our remote people work from.
We hope this gave you some inspiration to spruce up your personal working space, whether it be in your home, in a co-working space. or an office.
This week, I wanted to share what it's like for me, and for some of my fellow coworkers when summer is over and school is back in session!
I have three amazing kids; Evan (a new middle schooler), Keira (last year in elementary) and Reilyn (second grader).
At IMPACT, I’m lucky enough to work remotely which helps with the craziness, but that also means the summer can be complicated with three kids at home.
Thankfully, we live in a great neighborhood full of kids, so for the most part, they were all outside playing day in and day out, aside from the slight addiction to Fortnite my son Evan had.
This is how our neighborhood looked at least six days a week if it wasn’t raining (and it rained a lot this year in PA):
Now, if you have school-aged children, I'm sure you know the feeling when August officially hits, which looks something like this:
I mean, it did for me anyway. I watched this again for the second year in a row and died laughing.
It's a time for preparation!
We organize bedrooms, shop for school supplies (the list is endless, but as the video above states, “I’ll buy you a microwave if you take these kids off my hands”), pull out our calendars to start planning for after-school activities, complete registration forms, and spend LOADS of money!
The kid are always excited to lay out their first day of school outfits!
Everyone is Pumped!
That first weekend before school starts, you are more prepared than ever. You have lunches pre-made that last a solid week! You are READY!
As a remote worker, that first day is the most productive day in months for me!
TV is off, no one is asking for a snack and your co-workers are wondering why you’ve shared 1,510 documents with them before noon. It’s truly the best day ever!
September, however, is when ALL the mayhem begins and you're already pulling your hair out!
The first day back to school bliss is short-lived. That first day they come home, there are mountains of paperwork -- school rules and ethics book, permission slips, reminders to send in the physicals and vaccinations, a letter from the teachers, passwords, apps to download, contact information to update, parent portals to set up and much, much more.
On top of this, all of the after-school activities start. In my household, we have hockey practice twice a week and games on both Saturdays and Sundays.
My youngest, Reilyn, has gymnastics on the same night Keira has dance which is also the same night one of Evan’s hockey practices are. The girls also have horseback riding lessons every other Thursday.
Now, when I was planning this out in August, I thought; I’m going to have everything on one night, that way I’m not driving around West Chester 5 nights a week. It’s good. I got this!
But then, the kids come home that first week wanting to do even more stuff.
Keira has been talking about wanting to be in fifth Grade honors chorus all throughout elementary. She tried out and got in. That’s on Monday nights. She also decided she wants to be in the school musical - Tuesday mornings at 8 AM.
By the time September is over, I’m wanting it to be summer again. I don’t even know what day of the week it is and I work full-time. So, how do I keep it all together?
How do all of the parents at IMPACT keep it together while growing this awesome company?
Great question! I asked my fellow co-workers what they do to prepare and/or stay organized throughout the school year, and I have some great information to share with you!
First, I’ll share mine:
Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
I was talking to my best friend a few days ago and her daughter just started Kindergarten. My friend is also a high-school art teacher, so she’s used to this kind of stuff, right? No - WRONG! Despite having the summers off, it’s still a whirlwind. She told me a back-to-school parenting story I am ALL too familiar with, but being that this was her first time experiencing it, she was having some mom guilt.
Her son just started soccer this year, and like any good mom, my friend volunteered to create the after-game snack schedule. At the end of one of the games, her son came up to her and told her that there were no snacks after the game. Of course, she told him it was OK and that sometimes parents forget; They’d grab a snack on the way home.
She thought a little more about this later that day…..  “OH SH$T!!! I think I was supposed to bring the snacks.”
She pulled up the calendar that SHE made and sure enough, SHE was the one who forgot the snacks.
So, she called me to tell me about this, and because I’ve already been through the “oh sh$t, I forgot…” more times than I’d like to admit, naturally I’m the right person for the job at making her not feel like a bad mom.
Don’t sweat the small stuff is my biggest piece of advice.
Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or have a full-time career, this is going to happen more than you will ever like to admit and that is OK.
Recently, thanks to one of my fav co-workers, Katie Pritchard, I created a Trello board for all of my work stuff and personal stuff. It has helped get everything that is in my head out so I’m not overwhelmed with trying to remember it all.
That being said, I’m also on my computer every single day so I always have access. It definitely doesn’t help using a tool that you don’t check daily, so if you can, I’d give it a try. I love the satisfaction it gives me when I move something to the done column.
But seriously, don’t allow that mom guilt to creep in! Easier said than done, I know, but that guilt doesn’t help solve any problems and it’s worth the heartache you go through when you allow it to sink in.
That’s my advice, but what do my co-workers have to say:
Prep Meals - Britt Schwartz, Principal Strategist
Britt has been a friend of mine for three years, as well as one of my co-hosts on MarketHer. I’ve always known her to homeschool her kids, which, as a fellow full-time working mother, I never imagined how she did it!
This year, Britt decided to send her three oldest (she has five kids) to public school in their new hometown in Michigan.
This was new to her, but she handled it beautifully.
Below are her first day of school pictures and how she Embraced The First Month of School Struggle:
"I had no IDEA how many permission slips, school photos forms, t-shirt orders, recorder orders (God, help me!) would be involved with sending our three oldest to school for the first time, this year. On one hand, there is stronger sense of focus during the day while I'm now able to be present ONLY for my work, but on the other, finding time for things like Parent Field Trips and School Assemblies for homecoming is now our new norm!
Try to plan ahead as much as possible, for us, that's food. We do weekly menu planning with breakfast, lunch, and dinners already planned ahead. I prep what I can on Sundays and making school lunches ahead of time really helps. We don't have to think about what we're going to eat in the middle of a crazy evening."
Share the Responsibilities - Kathleen Booth, VP of Marketing
Kathleen is a person whom I've looked up to since the day she started at IMPACT.
She is always calm, cool and collected. She is dedicated to the success of the IMPACT Brand team, is a mom, and is heavily involved in her community and passionate about her beliefs.
admire her ability to always stand up for what she believes in and isn't afraid to put words into action. I love that about her!
This is her son, Wyatt:
"As your kids get older, don’t be afraid to give them some of the responsibility for staying organized and being prepared for school.
My son started sixth grade this year and with his promotion to middle school, we decided he was ready to take some ownership for his academic experience.
In our house, that means he makes his school lunch the night before, sets an alarm clock to make sure that he is up on time, and does his own laundry each weekend so he has clean uniforms ready to go every Monday."
Communicate & Stay in the Loop with School - Shandia Drummond, Sales Operations Specialist
Shandia is a mother of three boys, all five years apart.
She juggles work, mom-life, and on her “down-time” modeling.
What I love about Shandia is her drive to always be herself and to teach her kids how to be themselves too!
She posts amazing photos that look straight out of a fashion magazine on her Facebook profile, but more importantly, she's showing everyone how to embrace who they are and not be afraid to put themselves out there. I wish I had the confidence to do the same!
These are two of her sons, Delano and Aiden:
I have three boys (two are school aged, and each in different schools).
My eldest, Aiden, started 5th grade this year and moved to the middle school. This was a huge shift for him and myself. He has more responsibilities as well as school sports, band, and chorus.
To help us both stay organized, we are enrolled in the school communication platforms (Class Dojo and Edmodo).
It can be hard for him to get into the rhythm of multiple classes and teachers as in Elementary school he only had two teachers, now he has a teacher for each subject.
In Edmodo, the teachers are able to post homework assignments, test packet reviews ,as well as any announcements and information for parents. This has been a huge help in keeping myself involved and helping Aiden stay organized.
Delano started first grade and thought this is a step up for him from Kindergarten, it's pretty much the same routine from last year.
He is enrolled in Class Dojo. I can communicate with his teacher throughout the day by checking in on his daily progress chart as well as direct messages.
So far, the school year has felt less chaotic than I thought it would due to constant communication on these awesome platforms. I suggest that any school that offers this option, take advantage. It will save your life (SERIOUSLY). :)
Struggling with the start of school too?

South Dakota Writers – Interview with BJ Sheldon
I was drawn to many aspects of the Black Hills, during the years that I vacationed here (1999-2005). The spectacular geography, the historical significance, the laidback attitudes of this region. But I chose to move here for one specific reason: I knew this was where I was going to find my tribe. I knew, without any proof, that in these thar Hills I would find kindred souls: artists, writers, and other transplants as well. People who were well-read and open-minded. Individuals who felt inspired, even driven, to create. People who were also seeking connections. I did find this group of people, this family of friends, but it took many years. There were lots of missteps, along the way. How I found the right people, the real people that would become part of my inner circle, was based upon two significant factors: First, a business network that I joined nearly three years ago (The OWN, a network that supports women in business) and second, the other authors I have been privileged to meet. For me, as an author, this second factor is most critical. There are many people who can create in a vacuum. There are actors and playwrights and dancers and artists who don’t need anything from the outside world to get inspired. There are many who rely on their instincts to fuel their creative endeavors and passions. But I’m not one of those people. I need a tribe to not only come up with ideas but to motivate my writing goals. Last year I was excited to join South Dakota Writes, a networking community for our state’s authors. Their Facebook page defines South Dakota Writes purpose as “to organize people with a passion for writing in South Dakota by creating a vibrant online and offline community. This group will share information and events that may be of interest to writers in South Dakota”. Through South Dakota Writes, which was founded by Jason Kurtz (an author and English teacher based in Harrisburg) I have been able to network and celebrate with other artists throughout our region. I needed to know that these folks exist and that they were creating their milestones and opportunities. I need to know that there are writers in our area that are trying to accomplish what I have and those who have far exceeded my wildest literary ambitions. It is with this in mind that I wanted to sit down for some one-on-one interviews with some of the writers based in the Black Hills and pick their brains on what having a local writer’s community means for each of them. For my first interview, I wanted to talk with an author who achieved her success through Independent publishing. BJ Sheldon is the author of two trilogies, The Dusty Chronicles and the Gibborim Series, both of which were released through Whiskey Creek Press of Nashville.  BJ and I met at Hazel & Oak café in downtown Rapid City. Over curry chicken salad and coffee, we talked about writing, publishing and what it meant to be a South Dakota writer. We spoke first about BJ’s history and what brought her to our area.
South Dakota Writers – Interview with BJ Sheldon – Photo from bjsheldon.webs.com
“I grew up in northwest Iowa. This was the mid-80s. When the rug came out from under farming, my dad decided to sell the family farm, and we moved to Phoenix. I lived there twenty-six years. I married my first husband, and we had two children together. Then I married my second husband and had another daughter — my third. When our youngest was eleven, my husband decided to join the military. That was in 2005. He joined the Army Reserves but spent more time in active duty than inactive. When he came back from his second deployment, he had some injuries and so was looking for something different to do. He had been awarded some medals and the military was very impressed with him, so they sent him to Fort Dix in New Jersey to do some training. We were at Fort Dix/Maguire for twenty months when his medical issues caught up with him. He had the chance to retire and we had to decide where to go. We either could go back to Phoenix, or to Michigan where my husband is from. Or we could go back to Iowa where I was raised and still had a family. But my brother lived here in Rapid and raised his kids here. We decided to give Rapid City a try. A lot of people ask me ‘Oh, you moved here on purpose?’. I like it here. We go back to Phoenix to see my parents and now, that’s where my new grandchild is. She’s four months old. I’m a grandma!”
BJ has written several books, many geared to a Young Adult audience but dealing in rather deep subject matters including the supernatural. I wanted to know what inspired her writing career. Like many authors, it began with a love for reading as a child.
“I was a frustration to my kindergarten teacher. I was already reading. I was that kid so far ahead of everyone else and when I was bored, I was trouble! I would read everything I would get my hands on. My mom would drop me off at the library so she could go grocery shopping. The librarian would see me hanging out in the children’s book section. She came over and said ‘follow me’ and took me to the older children’s section where there were chapter books. From there I quickly moved my way into the teen section. I ended up writing my first book in 4th grade. It was a really bad book! This was around the same time as Marylou Retton and the 1984 Olympics so my story was about a gymnast that found God. Then, I would write little short stories and in high school, I wrote poetry.”
After adolescence, BJ wanted to continue her writing ambitions but in a new direction.
“I wanted to be a journalist. My first choice in college was journalism but my dad told me ‘no daughter of mine would be a dirty lying journalist’ so I did what dad wanted! I couldn’t even finish the first semester at college. I went back a second time (as an English major) when my second daughter was a baby. We (she and her first husband) broke up a year later. I was let go in 2009 from a job I hated and I was out of work for about nine months. My daughter’s birthday was coming up and I decided to write her a story. It was a bad story – ‘Skyler and the Saga of the Sages’ — but this was when the cobwebs got cleared away and I remembered how much I used to love this in high school.”
She began writing her first series, by hand, after moving to Rapid.
“I wrote it during lunch breaks at the job and then my husband had this old laptop he used on his first deployment. It became an obsession. I like (writing) YA because I like the concept of teenagers. Having raised three of them, they have this uncanny way to see the world in a different way than we do and most think that they are going to live forever. They just can bounce back from things. I’m also drawn to the supernatural because life is complicated and heavy and dark. I like being able to take reality and twisting it and making it something else.”
Like many Black Hills-based writers, BJ takes inspiration from our environment.
“My ‘Gibborim’ series takes place in the Black Hills. There are fallen angels and demons and it’s twisted!” Writing in fantasy/supernatural gives her the liberty to create new worlds. “There’s no rigid rules that it has to be (a certain) way, whereas with contemporary fiction there is. I like being able to make things up. I’m not normal. My way of dealing with reality is making my own reality!”
BJ Sheldon’s works are published by an independent press based in Nashville Tennessee (with her most recent series on a new imprint by that same independent publisher). We spoke about the publishing experience:
“When I first started out I went down the traditional route and started researching agent queries and wasn’t really getting anywhere. Then I got on Twitter. That’s how I found my publisher. They liked the concept of my book. I had won an award (Readers Favorite, Silver Medal, 2011). Whiskey Creek Press signed me to a three-book deal. With the indie presses, you wind up paying for a lot of the up-front costs yourself. I’ve just started getting checks this year. But it helped me learn about to design, how to market.”
As a result of her relationship with Whiskey Creek, BJ has had the opportunity to network with many other authors including Utopia, an annual writer’s conference and convention. She says this has helped her get over her natural shyness. “There are people there of all aspects of publishing – self-published, indie and traditional.”
“There are people there of all aspects of publishing – self-published, indie and traditional.”
BJ had planned to self-publish her second series, The Gibborim Series, but Whiskey Press reached out to her and offered her a chance to publish on their new imprint, geared toward YA supernatural fiction. As luck would have it, they wanted another trilogy. But she does hope to try other publishing methods at some point, just for the experience. And then we delved into the heart of the matter, the community of authors we find ourselves part of here in the Black Hills. As BJ explained,
“When I first came here I thought I was the only writer! Then I went to a meeting of Black Hills authors but I didn’t quite fit in. Most were publishing works of non-fiction. Even the South Dakota Festival of Books is mostly non-fiction works, so I still felt like an outsider. I made friends with this girl, Katie, who self-publishes. Apparently, the day before I met her some New York Times, bestselling author had been on a panel with her and literally walked off when she learned that Katie was self-published. But then I met Jonas Lee (the Black Hills-based author of the ‘Carter Gabel’ trilogy – a YA series about time-traveling – which was self-published) who’s become a good friend. So, I told Katie ‘you need to find your tribe, ’ and she’s already booked tickets to the next Utopia Convention.”
BJ has learned that strong marketing — no matter whether you’re self-published or publish through traditional or independent presses — is key to the success of any author. That, and good editing.
“It hurts the craft (poor editing). There are far too many people, especially in self-publishing, who don’t take the time to make sure that what they’re putting out there is the best representation of themselves. You can’t edit your own writing. With this South Dakota Writes group, we listen to each other and network and ask the questions. I’ve got all these new writer friends, doing great work. It’s nice to get together with them.”
She wants to see more community and connection between the South Dakota writing community.
“Listen to the people around you who have experience, who want to help and not just scoff at them. Otherwise, you’re just going to continue to be stuck where you are. I hope that with the South Dakota Writes group, that a lot of people are going to learn from each other. I hope those who are doing well, who have succeeded will have enough compassion to help other people learn how to improve.”
