Very fun thing actually about Jin Guangyao is he spent so much time and energy passing himself off as normal. The Normalest Guy, Look How Normal I Am. The Very Best And Most Skilled At Normal Things, Like Being Normal And Having Normal Opinions.

Which is great because on the one hand it reflects how he was kind of aware he absolutely was not. (And that by default this isolated him and this was Very Unsafe.) But on the other you see, with all the times he falls into the typical mind fallacy under stress and projects weird shit onto people, he also on some level believed everyone was doing this.

That being a Normal Person who had Normal Reactions to things, like being appalled by brutal violence, was an elaborate social lie everyone had to maintain to keep up the facade of civil society, and actually everyone was basically the same as him deep down. He was just better at it, and also the smartest.

Which is a very long way to say his character arc is heavily tied up with his evolving relationship with and skills at masking. I'm not gonna armchair diagnose him because that's beside the point, the point is that he is trying so fucking hard to be normal, but without a particularly well-developed definition of what's abnormal about him to begin with, resulting in some misfires.

And then you contrast him to some other characters and it gets more fun. One of his direct foils is Nie Mingjue, who literally does not know how to mask at all, not the slightest bit, but is fortunate enough to have been born the exact kind of weirdo his position in life demands, with special interests in 'saber training' and 'destroying evil.'

(He explicitly, per narration from wwx being inside his head, has no other interests and doesn't really understand the idea of having more than one activity you care about, do not tell me Nie Mingjue is walking around with a normal brain.)

So he is (jgy has a point about this, although he actually makes it about the luxury of having moral compunctions) free to totally embrace the conviction that everyone should basically be their authentic selves at all times, and just not do evil things about it.

On the other hand, and this really illuminates their relationship for me, Lan Xichen is absolutely trying to be normal. Like, he does try to excel, he wants to be best and he knows he's good, but as a person he is also trying to be as normal as circumstances allow.

He understands 'being normal about things' as a goal not in jgy's terms as an elaborate social fiction but as aspirational shaping of the self; if everyone is normal about everything then there won't be needless conflict. Living as normally as possible will optimize your mental health and your respect for others, and it's just a good baseline from which to be good.

Which is fine as far as it goes, but means harmless eccentricity (including gay) is to be tolerated and swept under the rug rather than really supported, and prejudices him to instinctively side with Jin Guangyao and anyone else who is pushing for Let's Be Normal About This, even when the people being weird are in the right.

(This is also to a non-zero degree a trauma response behavior; what Lan Xichen experienced as the largest existential threat to him growing up was something along the lines of being perceived as a selfish disruptor of norms, like his father.)

And then contrast that to Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji, who are both very concerned at least initially with how things and people and they themselves are supposed to be, and feel some responsibility for ensuring this supposed-to is reflected in reality.

But neither of them makes any particular attempt to be normal about it.

And then ofc Wei Wuxian, another jgy narrative foil, never attempts to pass himself off as normal. He will sell 'I'm better than everyone ever' and 'I'm scum of the earth' in the same breath before he will try for normal.

Except that he genuinely seems to think his most virtuous traits, his throw-himself-between-victim-and-weapon impulses, are basically normal. If not everyone (who isn't a total shithead) does it, it's because not everyone has his insane confidence they can pull it off.

Which in a good mood he would say is fair, because he is in fact awesome and really good at winning. (In a worse state of mind he would definitely hate on all the selfish cowards.)

Nie Huaisang is probably the most genuinely normal human being in the main cast, probably even more normal than Jiang Yanli, and he's very happy to play that up and present himself as actually even more normal and average than he is, in order to keep expectations down.

Up until his whole life gets fucked and this little pretense turns into the most elaborate and successful mask in the entire book.

I would read your zhongxiao codependent yuri Like, I do generally picture them as a vaguely father/son dynamic BUT THAT IS NOT CANON. It's just as much fun to view them through a romantic interpretation! Idk why people can't view the same characters in different kinds of relationships without being weird about it.

Honestly my theory for why ppl r very set on the father/son interpretation is everyone’s immediate thought on to how to make the power imbalance between them seem less uncomfortable is to apply a parental interpretation to it. Which is fine ofc, I get it, but the way ppl push it as canon a lot kind of grates on me a little bc they’re usually incredibly passive aggressive and pushy even if u clearly designate ur post as ship OTL

Also not really a fan of the characterizations either since ppl tend to treat Xiao like a moody teenager Zhongli has to reel in (this is hilariously reminiscent of the post I made about how ppl handle scaramouche and nahida a bit ago haha). And idk I just feel kind of polarized about the headcanon overall bc I associate it with people being really uncomfortable and frustrating about zx

I just like how there’s sort of an imbalance to them, some zxs like them being more fluffy and functional but I sort of like it where it’s not like, entirely dysfunctional but I’m prioritizing a specific kind of character study over romance. This tends to be how a lot of my ships go ngl I just sometimes enjoy the intensity/intimacy of romantic feelings thrown into the mix if it makes it interesting but I’m not often interested in a lot of my ships following more standard romance plots(?) I guess? Unless it’s specific ones. Which sounds clinical when I put it like that but this is just bc I am very aromantic NHFBVJVJ

When I say codependency in zhongxiao honestly it��s sort of a theoretical(?) codependency—not sure how to word it? I think Xiao would be really fucked up if he didn’t have Zhongli in his life suddenly but I don’t think his relationship with getting attached to people invokes what people would majorly think of when they think of codependency in a ship I suppose. It’s moreso I just feel Xiao could be at his worst with dehumanizing himself in comparison to other people with Zhongli, because said mental state is driven by how he feels about debt, service, and duty which are very closely tied with devotion and how he would feel about someone he considers his god and leader, as well as someone who saved him

It’s fun this is paired with Zhongli who generally knows how to work with Xiao kind of understands the self destructive depth Xiao’s loyalty/devotion comes with. Also fun they have been around each other for a very long time and Xiao as one of the adepti is familiar with the past I think Zhongli appreciates having around. They work but it’s also a case where Zhongli is in such a position of power over Xiao its kind of very delicate situation that’s hard for both of them to navigate. Which is fun to explore. I esp love contrasting it with other Xiao pairings (actually i think i still have that xiaoven fic up on my ao3 where I tried to convey a specific interpretation of them in a similar exploration vein too)

I totally get why people wouldn’t like it (I feel a lot of my opinions on xiao ships just clash with a lot of fandom consensus so bad all the time And it’s just bc I’m like this I’m not even trying to be contrarian or anything. HELDINCJD) but I just tend to handle shipping in a specific way. It’s not I don’t enjoy fluffy or lighthearted zl and xiao stuff I actually enjoy it a lot I just like there being layers. This makes it feel more impactful when I think about how Zhongli looks out for Xiao in canon or how Xiao gets like textually flustered talking to him (lantern rite 2023 was so tailored to my tastes it’s not even funny)

14. what keeps them up at night? right now he's extremely nervous about fucking up his status as his homeland's ambassador. it's been his dream to thrive in this role for a long, long time - even when it was just a like... long-shot silly fantasy. if he does a bad job at it, he's worried it'll ruin all the positive developments he's had with his family as of late (especially regarding his father lmfao), or that it'll endanger his home (WHICH HE LOVES!!!!! he looooves laverathia so much).

LIKE. reides is a confident person most of the time but he's made a lot of big choices lately. he was at a crossroads and he made a choice to start walking down a specific path. and it's the path he WANTS to take! more than anything!!! but now he's dealing with the responsibilities that come along with it. he was previously the type to run from his responsibilities as quickly as he possibly could so you know. big changes. big challenges. ;LDFKDLKG it's the most serious he's ever been about anything and he's gonna do his BEST but he's genuinely not sure he has it in him. lots and lots of fears circling around him rn!!! sleepless nights aside, he will meet them head-on >:)

15. is there something that never fails to make them laugh? as cheesy as it is, he loves aske's silly stories a lot. because......... he loves aske. 😳 LDKGDLGK otherwise i think he gets super, super happy every time he learns a new spell - especially when he manages to teach himself one. as a teenager his process of trial and error was a lot more funny, since his experiments would have some wacky little results, but he still has those bursts of joy whenever he succeeds at casting something new!

22. how would they decorate their living space, if they had a chance? he would probably opt to have it on land for convenience's sake, but having some sort of indoor pool for a water portion of it would be ideal for sure, since there's some stuff he'd likely want from laverathia which wouldn't be too well-suited to the surface world! and he would also definitely like to be close to the sea, too - so maybe the inside of this water zone has some sort of connection to the sea...? a sea pool? idk. technicalities. but that would be The Dream. a shrine to persana in that pool would also be ideal since reides is very faithful to him. ;^; that's his GOD!!!

but layout aside, the room would resemble a big study with tons of books and bottles of ink and various writing utensils!!! and it'd be decorated with a whole lot of whimsy!! lots of colourful furniture and paintings that make reides happy, prob with a bit of a nautical theme... and there'd be a lot of random objects (TREASURES!!!) that he picked up along the course of his adventures. along with a huge bed. huge beds are one of reides' weaknesses i'm ngl. it's the princely background showing. LMFAO

32. which of your decisions led to their voice being the way it is? i don't really put on a specific voice for reides - at most it's just like, a tone to accomodate his mannerisms - but in terms of how i speak as him... honestly it just comes to me with how i characterize him!!! i knew i wanted him to be kinda ditzy from the get-go, and i wanted him to say fun things very often (he definitely has no qualms with speaking his mind LOL)... so he generally has a cheerful, casual quality to how he speaks. and when he's angry, i want that anger to surge and crash!!! much like a storm. he's very emotional as a character so it's fun when i get to show off his volatileness. there's also usually a bit of a mischievous edge to him that i really love portraying hehe.

47. what could they talk about for hours on end? there's the obligatory wizard answer here (his magic), which is absolutely true, but on a more personal level? his home!!! laverathia!!! he never really gets the chance to talk about it (it's. you know. secret. for the most part. like most of the ppl up on the surface have no idea it exists sooo you know it's just not something he gets to talk about often. and he doesn't want to jeopardize its safety so he's not about to go off about it unprompted LMAO) but if anyone he trusts were to ask him about laverathian stuff he'd literally go on and on and on. it's crazy because he would deflect so much about it in the past but now that he's reconnected with it, he's just full of love for it. he will tell you all about the shipwrecks he explored and all about the stuff his fellow tritons craft and all about persana and all about EVERYTHING!!!!

[ rambles about character studies ft. ayato and heizou why is it always these two under the cut !! ]

for your question! as a reader, i usually gravitate to character studies fics that deal with or highlight said character's personal struggles; like a fic about xiao feeling afraid that he's opening up to the reader (a sense of vulnerability which is something xiao dislikes canonically). it could be fluff or angst or hurt with or without comfort! i'm just an absolute sucker for character studies <//3

meanwhile as a writer, i prefer domestic headcanons/reactions because i can sneak hints of my characterizations in the way they respond to certain things. after all, there is always something uniquely minutiae to each character.

as an example, if you ask heizou and ayato for a kiss, both of them will share the same initial reaction which is amusement but then, the reactions differ. heizou will indulge in that feeling a bit more, jesting by leaning in and pulling away at the last second with the biggest chuckle (dw, he'll give you a proper kiss afterwards!). ayato also has the urge to tease, but he wastes not another second before indulging you whilst his thumb finds comfort in gently rubbing your knuckles along to a silent rhythm in his mind.

they are both known to have a penchant for teasing; but ayato only exudes this side more unrestrainedly around certain people he's comfortable with while heizou retains it regardless of those around him. despite how similar they seem at surface-level, they have their own backstories that lead to habits that differ them from each other, even by the smallest margin — and that's what i like! to explore that little corner of differences to bring out unique traits in each character i write.

I love writing different types of characterization on characters. I'm always down for listening to how peeps want specific characters written in a specific way. 

[I don't always agree with how Canon or fandom will characterize some characters, but that's one of the many, many reasons why I write. And I'm open for hearing how others want the characters written as well, it's fun!] 

I also love writing character studies! Like there's a series I have planned for Cream, and another I have planned for Amy. Later I'll def do more, but I wanna get some of my ideas fleshed out and posted.

Sonic holds place in quite a few of my core memories. The special interest returns every 2-6 years, but I'm pretty sure it's staying this time, even if I drop it for a few months to switch over to another special interest. 

I'll mostly post about the sonic fandom, but I will post psychology stuff, and there will be another area that will be found on this blog as well.

in regards to what you pointed out a few posts ago, ngl one of my least favorite fandom things is when they make Kaminari the Har Har Stupid Joking ADHD Bi Playboy Who Is Never Serious Trope. like, he's very smart, 'worst in ___ area of a UA course' is very impressive and I don't remember if it even said that or just that he was studying with some other students, worried about his grades overall, calls himself stupid with implied insecurities about it, and didn't think he was very smart compared to the other people in the course. quirk overuse makes him loopy, incoherent, and think everything's funny. and yeah, he's a bit of a flirt and made a few perverted comments and actions that he clearly didn't think through that well. I'm pretty sure he's not ever stated to be bi in the manga because it was written by a coward, so I think people should think more about why they're associating and pairing together the idea of "hot flirty playboy who if legally able would sleep with everyone he meets" with emphasis or joke in the captions of whatever the content is on him being bi. I don't think this is inherently bad, even put together, but the execution feels kind of :/ and shallow. and I mainly just wish they'd pause to consider if there's any reason (subconscious or intentional) why one of those makes them think about the other, and at the very least lean back to see if they're blatantly making those traits centric around each other and tweak how they're showing them a little. Part of this is also because it's basically his fanon sexuality, but then they stick together "oh he's bi and everyone thinks that" and "he's made flirty or perverted comments and actions in canon at some point" and then mentally exaggerate and have this Canon Image of him as *waves hand at above* and I don't think that's happening consciously in most cases but. again. Cookiecutter Bi Party Playboy Who's Made a Date Offer to Everyone In The Building. not a flirty Person or a Playboy who is bi and flirts with more than one genders

I myself headcanon him as adhd and while the exact sexuality depends on my mood I think of/have him as bi in a lot of my content, but it's the same thing with why non adhd people see how he acts and label "adhd!" Especially about comprehension speed and derpy acting and intelligence and attention span jokes/tropes. Again, not bad in and of itself, but the specific parts of his behavior that make them think he's adhd, or that they start making jokes about or Ha Ha ADHD'ing, or that they think is why we project ADHD on him, (which they aren't necessarily wrong about, but like right in a really disrespectful look at how funny this is oh look squirrel way that's only funny when adhd people are doing it and it isn't all mocking like that) when they see other people calling him adhd, are the wrong ones, I think, and it shows in their characterization of him.

I'm not saying that any of those traits are bad in a character, but as a queer adhd girl with very high annual test scores and Gifted Kid Intelligence but extremely poor grades, focus, and brain damage (admittedly nothing like his, it was a longterm passive thing that mainly just made me have a Lot of Really Bad headaches, and closest thing it did to me was make me sluggish and emotional on bad days and also techincally have the potential kill my language bit if left untreated or the surgery messed up, which it didn't, and it won't be a problem again. but even after explaining that it wasn't cancer or any sort of tumor, and after seeing it do very little at all to affect my behavior outside of irritability and performance, because y'know, constant migraines, gone after the surgery but this was before that, Certain People I Was Vaguely Kind Of Acquaintances With started to treat my like I was a fragile glass thing going to to drop dead and revive myself speaking like a comic relief cartoon crazy person at any moment which was. patronizing.) I've since had surgery for, the way the fandom combines them into stereotypes and portrays them really just rubs me the wrong way- "Flirty Bi(tm) Playboy" "Har Har ADHD Can't Focus Or Get Things After They're Explained To Him, He's Still Confused And An Idiot" "Stupid Person With Brain Damage Who Can't Take Care Of Or Think For Themself And Acts Stupid And Funny For People To Laugh At" which tbh is super ableist even and especially when people irl do fit that description, and also reminds me of the Autistic Person Freaking Out And Being Dramatic sense of humor. And I know it's not helped by canon, because it done for comic relief and to limit his powers, but explored more I think it as a limitation could have been used way more interestingly than canon did and also call me biased but that quirk induced brain frying sounds at least as concerning as Izuku's quirk's backlash.

And it's a shame!! Because he's so much more interesting than that! Instead, the fandom gives me the Cookicutter Funny Bi ADHD Flirt Who's An Idiot and I am sad about it.

tbh it reminds me of what happened to percy jackson, esp with the ADHD Idiot Trope thing. which sucks because apparently it originated in the author making up stories around characters like his adhd and dyslexic kid inspired by Greek myths to tell him after running out of actual myths because it was his special interest and he wanted more. and then the series got kind of all over the place and the fandom processed that the adhd and dyslexic main character who does dumb things sometimes but is very combat smart and great at strategizing and leading gets bad grades and has trouble focusing and has, y'know, adhd, and made him the ADHD Idiot and erased his Gifted Kid girl friend's traits and ADHD and dyslexia into No Nonsense Calls Him an Idiot And Thinks He's Stupid And Has To Tell Him What To Do And Manage His Life For Him and honestly that just kind of sucks and it reminds me of what happened to fandom Kaminari. and now that I think of it people have jirou like that around him a lot too.

I couldn’t agree more that a lot of fandom has messed up Kami’s character, which is why I’ve kinda been posting more about him cause he’s just stuck in my head.

I think a lot of fandoms have trouble with characters like this, people have a hard time with duality in characters and fast/fun posts are easier to make if you flatten a character down.

The did it to Kami, they did it to Percy, they did it to Ron Weasley, they do it to Thor, the list goes on. If being the Smart One ™️ isn’t your thing and you can be goofy than you get pigeonholed into the idiot trope.

I feel for Kami a lot(probably because I have adhd/brain damage too)

It sucks when you’re smart but it’s not the traditional, measurable kind of smart(even if by national comparison Kami technically is).

I got terrible grades growing up, and I pretty much got the absolute lowest gpa you can get and still graduate. But absolutely no one would have known if I didn’t tell them, because I’m not dumb.

(It’s okay if you are “dumb”, I love me a head empty just vibes friend. You’re 100% valid, stil worthy of joining discussions, and should be listened to and taken seriously. This just isn’t about that tho)

I joke sometimes that I’m clever and witty but not smart, because that’s exactly what it feels like.

I have lots of thoughts and ideas that I think I articulate pretty well, I am excellent at finding the humor in things and expressing it in a way that’s funny to others too, and there is almost zero problems I can’t find a work around. And the people in my life love it, and they love to use it.

But eventually everyone in my life finds out that I’m not smart. They see the way I have to pause to Google how to calculate a tip, that I don’t know the name of all 50 states or even where to find them on a map, or I legitimately just can not spell (if you ever see a post where it looks like I used a weird word choice it’s probably because I tried 4 times and autocorrect+Google couldn’t help me and voice to text wasn’t an option)

No one ever questions my intelligence until they find out about my adhd and/or catch me struggling with it. After the mask comes off it’s like they can’t even hear me anymore, nothing I say could be true or matter because I’m now just the goofy accident prone spacy girl. My family literally calls me Spacy

And ya know what sometimes I just let people think that because it’s easier, it’s easier than explaining that I’m dyslexic and that I didn’t have a single geography/history clas until 10th grade and shocker the capital of Iowa doesn’t come up much by then. And it’s easier for me to laugh off losing my keys again than dwell on the fact that sometimes it feels like I’m losing my marbles.

And I wouldn’t be at all surprised if after this post I get a lot more “fact checkers” and push back on anything else I post.(not talking about people who want to genuinely engage,y’all are always welcome, I’m talking those people who don’t wanna look it up themselves but no longer trust me to know what I’m talking about)

Kami is a sweet brilliant boy. He’s in a nationally high ranking school, he loves the weather channel, he’s careful about his quirk that could easily hurt his friends in combat, he has a very high emotional intelligence level, he wears dorky shirts with electricity puns on them, and he pays attention to his friends and remembers a lot of little things about them.

He wants to be a hero and he takes that seriously, and the series has tried time and time again to tell y’all that smiling and laughter are an important part of that. Kami excels at this part! So what if his history grades don’t rival the top of the class, the top 5 students would struggle hard to do what Kami does.

Iida can’t relax, Momos rather shy, Todo struggles with social cues, Midoriya is canonically not funny, and jfc where to even begin with Katsuki. I’m certain they’ll all grow up to be excellent heros in their own right, but none of them are going to bring the level of joy and camaraderie that Denki can. You can’t test that into someone.

Kami also just notices people differently and has any easy way of joining in with them, he doesn’t struggle approaching Katsuki or Shinso. Sure he doesn’t hit the the nail on the head the same way Deku does but he’s the only one who has the guts and skills to try. Also he’s not that kinda friend, he’s not looking to a save these guys but pal around with them

I think Kami 100% realizes what a special case and tough nut to crack Bakugo is, I don’t think he’s just careless or too dumb realize his life’s at stake or whatever.

I think he’s purposely testing Bakugos boundaries all while trying to not be a threat to Katsukis actual ego and calling Bakugo out when he needs it in a way that not to serious. Kami knows how to be just goofy enough that he’s approachable. He’s also keyed in that the way to Bakugo is through Deku, meanwhile everyone else is stuck believing the opposite.

Kami also realized how important music is to Jiro and saw an opportunity to let her display her skills and combin the two worlds she lives, and he wasn’t afraid to get some back lash from her for it.

Like Deku Kami isn’t afraid to be uncomfortable. You really can’t teach that level of social ease, you can teach the posture and feed people a couple of lines but it’ll never hit the same. Funny approachable people have spent a lifetime learning the craft, usually out of necessity.

It’s actually what gives me the biggest adhd vibes from him, because adhd is (speculated to be) a dopamine deficiency disorder. People with adhd are constantly trying to raise their dopamine levels, and that means looking for praise and reward and nothing makes the human brain light up faster than postative human connections.

Adhd children struggle a lot with connecting with peers and often find making people laugh a fast way into people’s circles and makes it more likely people will overlook being interrupted or spaced out on.

Also adhd people are pretty much forced by their own brain structures to be genuine in all they do, low dopamine levels make it very hard to do things you don’t enjoy because there no promise of dopamine from the activity and you don’t have enough to spare, plus impulsiveness makes it really hard to not show when you do or don’t enjoy something.

I agree that Kami is also painted as overly perverted at times, he’s a little flirty but in a fun casual way but it’s not the foundation of his personality and it’s really mellowed out over the course of the series.

And while I subscribe to the bi hc from his interactions with Jiro and Shinso, we should all be very mindful that we don’t lump these characteristics together. The are separate facets of his personality that are not dependent on each other in anyway.

Kami deserves all the respect and love, I can’t wait to see our electric king again 🖤⚡️🖤

ANYWAY humanities yaku is stupid hot i think your characterization of him in that post (if any passersby are reading this go go go read) is spot on so he’s probably into philosophy...... but he’s also a big traveller in the future i think so i wouldn’t be surprised if he was more interested in world history. he’s really fun to debate with because he’s not a dick and doesn’t resort to cheap tactics (like shouting over you) but is also very stubborn so it’s like a very long intense conversation about only one topic. he seems like he’s bad at writing essays though like he can be very eloquent face to face and then struggles to write at an elevated level (or at least doesn’t find it easy). he’s pretty easygoing most of the year but come finals he’s got a rigorous study schedule going and probably sets up a lot of study groups bc teaching helps him to memorize stuff and get intimate with the material and he’s regularly on the more competent side of students as well as a natural leader

also he wears a lot of sexy fall fashion without looking like he’s trying too hard. i can’t elaborate rn bc i’ll start drooling on my screen or whatever but y’all can figure it out

Ooh! :D Tysm for asking~ I LOVE headcanon questions, esp ship thoughts/imagines! I've not written either pairing, tho these are charries I enjoy (and ones I know I truly love in three instances—I need to write Cormac more before I upgrade my "like" to "love"! XD). I've written Romilda and Padma the most of these four and therefore have some solid characterizations for them (Romilda in fic that's mainly posted now, Padma in some forthcoming fic to be posted this spring—so please look forward to new eagle content in addition to old eagle content soon to be crossposted to tumblr and to AO3!), but I DO HAVE SOME IDEAS FOR THESE SHIPS~ (So sorry for the looong reply—I had fun writing about both pairs! :D and tumblr’s read-more function on asks is...wonky at best these days...let’s hope this works...)

firstly, may I just say—this is a good-looking couple~ (I mean, big love for the Patil twins in general, but also ngl Louis Cordice cast as Blaise in the movies was A+ imo, *lol* is my artist bias showing yet i kinda wanna draw them now)

that aside, eagle–snake ships intrigue me?? esp with someone quiet and shrewd like Blaise outside of Pansy, I find I enjoy him with Ravenclaws...

Padma always struck me as the twin who was too nice and reluctant to say "no"—after all, she did let Parvati rope her into going to the Yule Ball with Ron, which did not turn out to be very fun at all; but she did end up giving up on Ron and dancing with a Durmstrang student that evening in order to save her night, so I see that as the start of her developing her own determinedness (not to mention joining the D.A. in bk5 afterwards)

And then we have Blaise it's the quiet ones you gotta watch *LOL*

He's such an observer rather than an active participant, but he comes across as someone who would make worthwhile conversation, a personality type that got on Draco's nerves...hmm, I wonder if the Sorting Hat ever considered Blaise for Ravenclaw House for a second...? :O

also an idea: Pansy knows/knew the Patils outside of school, so it's possible that Blaise might've, too, or might later on the closer Blaise finds himself pulled into Draco & Pansy's orbit

I think I could see PadmaBlaise as a will-they-won't-they deal, a classmates-turned-mates trope where they're in each other's orbit at school mainly during study halls and Padma can appreciate his more studious interests (my main hc is that he has interests in more advanced and difficult subjects and eventually becomes Professor of Ancient Runes, tbqh) and Blaise can enjoy some company without a need for conversation altho if they do converse it'll hold his interest without being Dark (Draco & his cronies) or needlessly invasive or suggestive (Pansy & the girls...mainly Pansy, but sometimes Daph pries, too); this also works bc I hc the eagles as being close but not exactly realizing/appreciating their closeness during their school days, so Padma has her friends, certainly, in her House, but Blaise would be a nice change of pace for her—likewise with Blaise, bc he sort of considers Pansy and perhaps Daphne his friends, and Draco's entertaining and Theodore's kind of a git sometimes, but Blaise in general struggles with the concept of friendship or relationships altogether possibly a side-effect of his mum's reputation for having all those late husbands

outside of school, living not super far from each other and having families running in some of the same social circles (bc now that I've thought about this, I RLY LIKE THAT IDEA <3), I still think they'd carry on their friendship; Pansy might tease Blaise a bit about it, but the snakes don't rly bother him too much about it bc the Patils aren't a bad family (the only issue in recent yrs is when the twins join the D.A.); I think their friendship is more of a concern for Padma's family, esp bc Parvati would detach herself from her best mate's hip long enough at least to alert their parents of the company Blaise keeps, & that coupled with the well-known rumors about Mrs. Zabini just make everyone wary about how close Padma gets to Blaise

but honestly it's such a lark bc there's not an evil bone in Blaise's body—Padma's had enough deep, meaningful conversations with him on walks around their respective neighborhoods and even a few times around the castle grounds to know that, even if he doesn't say it, the way Draco talks scares him (and scares Pansy, too, Blaise lets slip, and a pang of nostalgia for a childhood friend she & her twin once had makes her heart ache), & Blaise lowers his guard enough times on their walks that eventually Padma's fingers find their way to his & sometimes they halfheartedly hold hands

Padma's determination to keep their bond alive & well struggles during 6th & 7th yrs, esp with how crazy things get and the danger the reconstituted D.A. put themselves in—they don't talk about it, but it's a silent argument they have, that he doesn't want her to join again & fight back, that she can't sit idly by while her sister and friends get hurt & tortured & nearly killed on a daily basis—any of them could be next, and change must start somewhere, so it can start with her (and the D.A., but Blaise isn't arguing with them, he's arguing with Padma and why won't she bloody listen!)

it turns into a cold war between them, & when the final battle occurs, they're in completely different parts of the castle, Padma actively fighting and thinking Blaise remains twiddling his thumbs in the dungeons with the rest of the Slytherins...

...in actuality, her words reached him, sank in; that night, Blaise calms Pansy down after her "hand Harry over!" hysterics and then is one of the few Slytherins to do smthg that night (Astoria actively fights, her sister later learns, but Daphne & Blaise actively protect their fellow snakes, esp the defenseless underclassmen)

Padma & Blaise don't exactly "make up" following the war, until they discover they've both signed up for an 8th yr, and that yr gives them the time to share and mend; when Blaise tells Padma how the war went on his end, she isn't surprised but is pleased—he's surprised she's so calm about his actions, but they've gotten to know each other so well & she knew how badly the other side's deeds bothered him...she honestly believed it was only a matter of time until he fought back ("After all, when talking, you're so quick with your commentative snickers and so good with the comebacks—so fighting back makes sense to me")

other random hcs: the Patils are well-known for their matching plaits, but Blaise's favorite activity at the end of the day is gently combing his fingers thru Padma's hair, unraveling the plait and just winding tendrils around his fingers; I will forever keep Padma working at the Ministry, and they arrive at Ministry events looking like a certified Power Couple™ decked out in the finest fashions (likewise at faculty events at Hogwarts bc Professor Zabini is A Thing <3); Blaise learned from his mother how not to do romance, so he's actually quite the romantic—one of his favorite pastimes is owling Padma out of the blue with a random love letter (better yet, she gets to decode it bc it's in some old runic alphabet, but she never worries about not recalling things off the top of her head, bc Blaise has heaps of references at home that she can ransack at the end of her workday); since they spend so much time in the U.K. apart (him in Scotland teaching, her in London at the Ministry), they take a prolonged vacation every summer, a getaway usually just the two of them (sometimes the other Patils like to crash...but Blaise finds he doesn't mind it too much, the large family's growing on him, *LOL*)

does Mrs. Zabini ever approve of Padma? well, after practicing a good "fuck if I care" stare with Parvati's and Lavender's help, Padma's able to convey calmly to her that she knows she doesn't need Mrs. Zabini's approval bc Blaise's opinion is what matters and that actually amuses Blaise's mum immensely so Padma unknowingly wins her over in the end wut

as for the Patils, with Padma knowing Blaise is a decent man, it doesn't take long for Parvati to discover that he's rather a softie, so the family comes around to him and the idea of him being Padma's better half; as for actually dealing with Parvati, once the secret's out, it doesn't take long for it to get out that he was smthg of a quiet hero in the war, too (confirmed thru the grapevine by Daphne), and once Parvati knows, Lavender knows, and once Lav knows, the world knows; so all this time, Professor Zabini's students were intimidated by this tall, dark, handsome teacher of Ancient Runes who could silence the room with a heavy stare—now his students know he's a kind Slytherin and it gives them the warm&fuzzies and it makes him more approachable?? some of the older students even try to pal around with him *LOL*

^honestly Blaise's problem is the opposite of Neville's: students initially think Neville looks like a kind man who might be a pushover and then they learn HOLY SHIT HE SLAYED NAGINI WITH GRYFFINDOR'S SWORD??? and then poor Blaise had students who almost feared him and now they just wanna hug him XDDD i'm also here for Blaise&Neville friendship btw

so yeah, PadmaBlaise life could be rly fun and interesting and I think they could bring out some rly great qualities in each other! :DDD <3

but if someone can do it, that person is Romilda "Why, yes, I did once try to slip the Boy-Who-Lived a well-made Love Potion and almost succeeded" Vane

Romilda strikes me as the type of witch who knows what she wants and when she wants it—was she definitely after Harry only for his name and fame? *shrugs* But the potential for an older Romilda to have matured a little, to remember being scared in the final battle and take her skills more seriously couples well with her determined decision-making, imo

as with Cormac, the poor bloke is forever going to be a looks-nab-him-first type, i.e., he'd probably spy Romy at some Quidditch match with her mates & just be gobsmacked the bushy hair makes him falter for a second & think he has a type, given Hermione...but Romilda's freckles are cute, too <3

Cormac's also stubborn & hasn't lost his touch in dogging a pretty witch's heels, but Romilda takes time to develop any attraction to him—sure, he's a Quidditch player, but old habits die hard, & Cormac hasn't quite made a name for himself, so she's not yet sure about giving him the time of day (meanwhile, her friends are half entertained & half torn that they're not lucky enough to be in her shoes bc they all agree he's handsome)

and it's prolly thru her mates that he manages to snag a date with her, the simplest of things, just a cuppa, no commitment, bc her friends are all curious as hell

turns out that Cormac's thoughts towards romance have never rly changed since he was a teenager, but he was misread by the Golden Trio et al back in the day: of course he wants to be a hero in the Quidditch world, if not the top one...but he's not looking for a trophy wife to dangle off his arm, he just wants to find a charming woman like his firecracker mother momma's boy <3 and have the large family his parents had planned on having but couldn't (Cormac's large ego developed bc he was an only child who was terribly spoiled)

for Romilda, it's not a bad match—Cormac's a gentleman, but her desire for a man with a title or fame to his name comes from being raised by a single mother, just the two of them sort of scraping by hi okay i have a lot more on romilda's fam in general anYWHO, so Cormac essentially telling her he's ready to give her any kind of life she wants is like a dream come true—almost unheard of, post-war, unless you're a part of the Potter–Weasley clan

knowing there's a distinct possibility they could work in that sense, Romy gives him a worthwhile shot & they date properly, her coming to learn far more about Quidditch than she ever thought possible, him coming to appreciate magic that her mother passed down to her (potions dissolved in teas soothe his tired muscles after practice better than anything~! ...altho Romilda's fingers digging into his arms is nice, too)

for two sort of flamboyant personalities who might have the potential to be hotheads, I think, there's a kind of ease between them, where they sort of click into place, Romilda who wants a comfortable life and Cormac who wants to give her that life

now for some silliness: at Quidditch matches & press events, Cormac is OVER THE TOP in using his magic to point out where his better half is in the crowd, & Romy preens at this (not to mention it's always a beautiful bit of magic); wherever Romy works (my main hc is her as Auror), she every now and then occasionally gets a double-take by someone who remembers exactly why her name was known back in their school days, but she always puts the rumors to rest at the next work event but dragging Cormac in front of that person so she can say smthg along the lines of "Oh, Harry? Yeah, no, I upgraded!" XD <3; Romy finds calm in patching up Cormac's Quidditch things by hand when on break at work (he's so embarrassed when he finds out—turns out, yes, there are things that embarrass even Cormac McLaggen, *lol*, and having his guards repaired or, Merlin forbid, his socks darned in public is a hair too far, Miss Vane!); as their relationship grows more serious (and Cormac becomes a more seasoned player to the point where he's a first-stringer), Cormac does come to believe in good-luck charms: his one and only is a lock of Romy's curly hair knotted around the handle of his broom (and it must work, bc the one day it frays and flies off is the day Cormac breaks a damn leg)

they're surprisingly not as volatile as I thought when I first read this ask, and I'm so here for this cuteness???? >:D

In loving me, in loving you was such a fantastic character study!! ivar’s struggle with “happiness is nothing” is well-established but it’s fun to think about how that relates to permanence in his life. it’s less that happiness doesn’t exist but more that it’s so transient (like pain, like love) that its not worth depending on. it was so fitting that what finally snapped him out of his catastrophizing was talking to the reader about a more concrete commitment to their future together.

I also thought you did a really excellent job with the pacing! the slow unfolding of exactly what it is that gets under ivars skin about being back and then the recovery from the resulting depressive spiral were so fascinating. it was the shortest 11k words I ever read! I think the scene at the marketplace was my favorite for that reason—it was such a great turning point for the audience to grasp ivar’s anxieties about the reader starting to see him the way ppl in kattegat have. both the flashback and the bone breaking are so visceral that even if his fears are unfounded, it’s totally apparent why they’re founded to him.

and your characterization of ivar is still so definitive to me, 11k words of him was not enough! something really cool you did that I hadn’t seen before was how you explored how closely he ties his identity to how other ppl see him. I thought it was really interesting (and in character!) that he almost doesn’t have internal sense of self. he exists to himself almost completely as he is seen by others: there was a younger version of him that was pitied/mocked that he disdains and an older version that’s been loved that he likes(ish), regardless of any actual differences between them. if the reader were to begin to see the new version of him like the old one was seen, then to him, he would be right back to where he was. it’s like his own identity is another transient aspect of his life that he’s only starting to gain a sense of permanence for. very spicy stuff!! hopefully this is nice and not tedious for you to read, but AMAZING job again it was an instant classic!

Yes, exploring Ivar's struggles with happiness (and Ragnar's botched parenting) are always fun for me, but taken from the side that I did this time (with his abandonment issues making An Appearance™) and twisting that 'nothing' into 'unsafe, unreliable, transient' is very interesting for me to dive into ngl.

Yeah, having that slightly-more-concrete certainty that she will actually stay with him (the certainty that returning to Kattegat and kinda returning to who he was when he was there couldn't actually make it so that he loses her) helps Ivar a lot. He has people he should consider permanent, in that intimate scene at the end of the first night he is on the verge of accepting that, but Kattegat fucks with his head (Kattegat is, in its own way, the source of his trauma, from what his life was like to it being where he left his mother behind and returned to find her dead) and so he starts to unravel towards the need for that promise of permanence from her and all that.

And thank you! The scene in the marketplace (and the scene of their first night in the cabin by themselves) was my favorite too, especially because I liked pulling scenes and stuff from canon into this Modern AU (like the dickhead laughing and saying 'who's the cripple', or the recap of his first time and all).

I really don't know what to say, this whole ask left me speechless, but thank you, so so much, I'm so happy you like my characterization of Ivar. And omfg yesss, his performative self and all that is very interesting to me, and incredibly fun to write. The 'switch' in Ivar from domineering and abrasive to a softer, more vulnerable version of himself will never cease to make me fall in love with the character all over again; and I wanted to kinda show why he is that way in this. He has to act, he has to put up that front (a front that is not a lie, he is an abrasive little shit, but I think it's somewhat of a decision to be that, if that makes sense) so that he controls the narrative of who he is, so that he controls who they see in him.

Ans yeah, he forms his image of himself around what others see of him, mainly because of a lack of self-confidence and issues he carried his whole life about being seen/ignored, that make him hyperaware of people's 'eyes' on him. And returning to Kattegat puts all that to the forefront of his mind, because he has to face the source of his pain/trauma, and so he starts to get overwhelmed with that desperation to prove that he has made something out of himself other than what they see, better than what they see.

Omg sweetheart, this could never be anywhere close to tedious to read, I read it like 17 times already, you have no idea how happy it makes me to hear people like my work enough to pay attention to stuff like this, and to send such a wonderful ask; please never think that I don't treasure all these asks with all my heart!

i absolutely cannot say enough about this fic. this is one of the few works of fiction i’ve read in my life that i was so obsessed with i genuinely ruined my sleep schedule to finish. this fic is absolutely HILARIOUS. essentially, jon is an extremely powerful 8 year old w/ no knowledge of who he is who is being raised by jonah, who is completely out of his depth. also has a nice touch of gertrudeagnes & the author really nails their dynamic/the tragedy of their relationship...

this is a really interesting work of fiction just generally. it features a non-linear narrative, plays with a lot of unreality, and has a great deal of time wonkiness. i actually can’t explain the plot without giving it away, which i resolutely do not want to do because piecing together what is going on is a huge part of the fun. martin is the primary character, but everyone is featured. jonmartin and lonely eyes are the two ships. one of my favorite works in the fandom.

the last lines/final reveal absolutely tore me apart. i cried like a baby.

11. How would you describe your style? (Character/emotion/action-driven, etc)

I would describe it primarily as POV-character’s-emotion-driven lmao. Action/plot is secondary to me ngl. I didn’t write prose for a long time because I felt like I had no place in that genre given how bored I felt when I was trying to write in a traditional novel style. I wrote tons of poetry, which has come to flavour my prose, because it allowed me to prioritize emotions as well the... aesthetic value of the text.

And yeah, I know that sounds pretentious haha, but hear me out: this bitch (me) has hella ADHD and I just have a much easier time reading when the text is visually interesting. Formatting is my favourite thing in the world. I love playing with italics and bold text and weird line breaks and CAPS and everythingggg. Avant garde lit makes my heart go pitter-patter for this reason lol.

I also really like when the writing has a lyrical flow. That’s another thing that appeals to my ADHD brain and something which has heavily defined my personal style. Fun fact: I use conductor hand movements when reading my final drafts to better study the flow of the words. It’s just something that feels natural to me, so I’ve always done it. *shrug*

4. Did you have any ideas that didn’t make the final cut of [She Painted Fire Across the Skyline]? 

GOD SO MANY IDEAS jkdajklgsjklgjskdl. I’ve written TWICE as much as has actually gotten published for that fic. Some of it was just backstory that I got lost in because it intrigued me and I felt like studying the interactions even if I knew they weren’t making the cut. Some of it was a case of “kill your darlings.” Some of it was just like “what the fuck..... who wrote this.... ME? how dare I.”

To get into some specifics, there’s a Jayvie intro I considered using for... Chap 4, I believe it was. I’m not sure what to do with it now lol. It’s okay, I guess? I might develop it into a oneshot some day, we’ll see. Here’s a little preview:

“Tst, tst, tst,” the man called again, a little louder than before. He paused to listen, like he thought they might actually respond—like they were just a pair of starving alley cats he could coax out.

Jay’s lip curled in distaste and his fingers twitched eagerly at the hilt of his knife. Evie’s hand had found his wrist, though; she’d dug her nails in with enough bite to let him know it was an order: don’t move.

There’s some backstory I was debating about kid!Mal trying to give her mother a drawing she’d made and getting rejected in front of kid!Carlos and Cruella:

‘Come along,’ Cruella had hissed, giving Carlos a sharp tug forward. She’d had a stormy look until she’d seen Mal, and her eyes had immediately flickered to Maleficent. ‘Ah! Maléfique!’ she’d greeted, promptly shoving Carlos away. ‘How wretched to see you, darling! How perfectly… wretched.’ Cruella’s gaze had fixed on the portrait Mal was holding, and something about her smile—too wide, too tight—made Mal feel unbearably self-conscious about the fact that her mother hadn’t reached to take it.

I’m always torn between characterizing the kids as naturally more inclined to innocence and cutesy shit before the Isle corrupts them and, you know, having them become a lot harder a lot sooner in life, so that idea is just kinda... there.

In the latest chapter, there was going to be a scene where Evie reminded a cynical Carlos how he used to love when she read fairytales to him and how his favourite was The One Thousand And One Nights (in the context of him having decided fairytales were childish). But I changed direction because I started thinking it made more sense in-universe, where there are fae, for “fairytales” to be more of a derogatory term implying that faeries exaggerate history or flat out lie about it (thus making their written histories untrustworthy) rather than to be something that means “objectively fantastical/unreal” as it does for us.

And finally, there’s some Umlos/pirate!Jay backstory (i.e., reference to when Jay was running with the pirates before he met Mal) that was originally supposed to feature in the final chap, but which I’ve decided to cut out and eventually make into a oneshot. It stopped making sense in the narrative once I made significant changes to Chaps 4 and 5. There’s a few more things that I’m not sure are going to make it into Chap 6, but since I’m still working on it, I won’t give any details on those for the moment. ;)

genuinely, as much as i love zim and i think he deserves love, it’s not going to come easy for him. and even if he does struggle through all means to try to earn the affection of whoever he likes, they also have every right and reason to reject him. even from that rejection, i believe that zim can learn from the flaws of the situation, with SOME help of course…otherwise zim on his own would just spiral in his Feelings and get nothing done. whether zim’s progress involves the character he had interest in depends on how in character i think it is.

skoodge: zasr is on the VERY top of the list because it’s the one i’m thinking the most of right now. i see a lot of people like to characterize skoodge as the soft one that teaches zim to be more open about his feelings and have more confidence in himself, which i think is fine! in fact i love that fluff stuff, but a while ago i found this fic and [inserts that one grunkle stan meme] this…this is beautiful

if you take a peak at it, then you’ll understand what i mean but the rundown is that skoodge..he’s not the total OPPOSITE of the popular skoodge characterization but he definitely isn’t the affectionate one. in fact he finds affection odd and uncalled for in an irken. he finds zim to be..rather interesting in general. but the good thing is that he likes zim’s confidence, and hopes it can rub off on skoodge. 

i have ZERO idea on where the fic is headed, but it’s been my favorite characterization of skoodge so far.

and on my own imagination if i keep going on this onesided indulgence, then i like to imagine skoodge, while slowly starting to get used to zim’s company, would still find zim’s affection confusing and not something skoodge can easily return back. yes the two are alike, and skoodge sees zim as an equal, but he can also recognize that zim overwhelming issues to work with is something completely out of skoodge’s hands, and it may not be something skoodge can easily tackle as much as he can with a slaughtering rat person. i’d still want them to be friends of course, or hell maybe this can be something slow burned, but i DEFINITELY like to imagine that the first time zim reveals his feelings it’d end in total awkwardness

the tallests: less of a character study reason, moreso just finding scenerios funny where zim is romantically attracted to the tallests even though the tallests hate zim’s guts. i HAVE been seeing an au around where the tallests are nice to zim which is cool n all but . the pure disgust of the tallest hearing zim make awful pick up lines towards them/the secondhand embarrassment from the other irkens hearing it on the other line is HILARIOUS imo. also i like making fun of zim whaddya want from me. 

also tallest purple n red are already dating in every single imagine i have no if ands or buts they are TOGETHER. theyre MARRIED. theyre HAPPY. 

^ bonus the in short supply fic is a guilty pleasure. it still doesnt make me go down with the tallest purple/zim pairing but man is it a dynamic i wouldnt have ever considered yet with the right writer i get heavily invested

And yes, he also cultivated a bit of an ego but in a way I can understand that because a lot of it was in reaction to his treatment during Phase 1 (i.e. he didn’t want Murdoc to push him around anymore). And yeah, I mentioned the jokes about his trauma- definitely ngl on his part.

Asking this because of that top notch Michi rec post you made: Top 5 Michi Fics.

Oh, thank you so much! I’m really pleased to hear youliked my Michi rec post. ♡ (*Here* it is for those who want to check it out.)

To be honest, it’s really not easy to make a top fiveof Michi fics for two reasons: 1. I love way more than five Michi fics and it’dbe difficult to rank them. 2. I’ve been reading Michi fics ever since 2004.Granted I haven’t read every single one of them. And there are so many stories that I really, really loved but have been deleted in that twelve year time span. (I’m going to include those anyways, though.)

Let’s give it a try…

I’d first like to discuss a few Michi stories I reallylike that just didn’t make the cut to my top five, but still deserve a special mention:

⚘Thin Lines byHemsee Apparently this got deleted? I only found out about this yesterday, because I started checking the links on my Michi masterpost, but evidently it’s been deleted instead. Which is unfortunate because I was really eager to know how the relationship between Taichi and Mimi would further develop. Plus, Hemsee really has a clean, beautiful writing style that is so wonderful to read. I hope she creates a new multi-chaptered Michi story, though. 

⚘ All Good Things by Hemsee Luckily, her Michi oneshot is still there. It tells the story of how Mimi and Taichi’s relationship developed throughout the years since their childhood and how they gradually fell in love and got together. 

⚘ anchor me back down by dianaagronSimilarly to “All Good Things”, this story follows their relationship from the very beginning, since kindergarten, in a wonderful will they/won’t they-kind of way, to their mid-twenties. While I do love both stories (what can I say, I’m a major sucker for slow-burns), I do prefer ambd over agt. Plus how can anyone dislike a story inspired by that beautiful song by Mindy Gledhill?

⚘ Snow by hello heartbreak I recently re-read this story and loved it just as much as I did ten years ago. Ngl it hurts seeing my beloved Chosen in such pain, but this story is so touching. I also believe this is the fic that generated my headcanon that Mimi would have trouble transferring back to Japan and have trouble speaking/studying the language. Lo and behold, ten years later that headcanon actually came true in tri! 

⚘ Buttons by BenignUser This story is just so adorable! It makes me melt every time I read it. (I believe I’ve read this oneshot five times. What is my life, haha?) But really, it’s so fun, so cute and definitely worth your while. 

⚘ keep it classy by hellyeahayumichan This is a collection of four (slightly nsfw) drabbles for Michi, Sorato, Takari and Kenyako. It’s just such a great read! I really admire the subtle descriptions. Hellyeahayumichan has such a way with words. (And even though it’s not fic, I highly, highly recommend checking out her Michi art! Each and every one of her drawings are amazing. I envy her colouring skills in particular.)

⚘ Parallels by Scripturiens There are no words to describe how amazing this artwork is. And I stress the word art, because it’s really an interesting exercise in writing by putting the different pieces out of order so that all the nuances of the thoughts and the actions of the characters come together with such care. Amazing structure aside, it’s a nice piece that so wonderfully conveys emotion, especially heartbreak. I love it so much, and now I want to go re-read it….

⚘ Whispers at night by ribbonedcuriosa To this day I’m still so happy I requested a Digimon story set in the Star Wars universe from ribbonedcuriosa, because she took it and fabricated this lovely ficlet. She merged both franchises so fluently, it’s inspiring. The Michi is subtle here, but I love subtle implied pairings when it comes to the adventure genre. I honestly crave more of this story. Forever crossing my fingers for a continuation.

After contemplating long and hard over it, I now present you my TOP FIVE MICHI STORIES:

05 ⚘What Women Want by StarlillyWe start of with one of the most popular Michi fics on FF.net. And that’s understandable, because this story is so much fun! I believe I started reading it not long, just a couple of months, after it was completed. I’m even planning on re-reading after finals, so my little review here is based on my memory of when I read it late 2005. 

First there is something I have to confess (again, I’m sure I’ve stated this before, but just to be clear I’ll state it once more) that I don’t really like it when authors use the dubbed names in fics. I prefer reading Taichi Yagami over Tai Kamiya, very much so. I didn’t like it back when I started reading Michi fics in 2004/2005 and I still don’t now. That said, I won’t turn a fic down because the author chose to use the dubbed names. I do like to give it at least a try. (I sound so picky now…) And in this case: I loved the “What Women Want” film back then (still do, I rewatched it this year), so there was no way I wouldn’t read a Michi fic based on that film. And honestly, Starlilly took the premise and really made it her own while developing the relationship between Taichi and Mimi so well. 

04 ⚘ Falling’s not the problem by ribbonedcuriosaAhhhh, this story is so good! I was eagerly awaiting the next part to beta each time because it’s just so good. I absolutely love how curiosa jumped back and forth from past to present to showcase how Mimi and Taichi got to the point where they were in the beginning and how their lives further developed since then. And she did it so fluidly. Also her characterizations of both Taichi and Mimi are so well-done. 

03 ⚘Come to Me by Pied Piper + Only Alive by Pied PiperI’m sure you all knew beforehand that at least one Pied Piper story would make my top five, and here’s the first one… Sorry, first two. Okay, I know I’m cheating here by putting both these stories on the number three slot and therefore haven’t whittled my list down to five fics but six. But for the life of me, I can not chose between these two! 

I’ll talk about Come to Me first. I really love this story so much because it’s so real, so relatable. There were so many moments where I just nodded understandingly, because it was so realistic. And I talked before how I love slow-burns, well, this fic is one of the ultimate slow-burns I’ve ever read. I really enjoyed reading about their journey from how they became friends first to actually falling for each other, but being apprehensive first considering they were still dealing with their heartbreak from a previous relationship, to finally arriving at their destination together which felt so earned. It was so beautiful beyond comprehension. (PS: I still have a half-finished fanart of it lying around.)

Moving onto Only Alive now… I’m confident my good friend Sunny is going to love the fact that I included this fic into my top three. Back in the beginning of 2009 when we discovered our mutual passion for digimon as well for Michi through a meme on my livejournal (we befriended over Avatar first), she told me that this was her most favourite Michi story. Somehow I hadn’t read it then yet. (Seriously, what was wrong with me?) So, at her recommendation, I read the first chapter and I immediately wrote back to her that I was in love with this story already. There was a certain passage in the first chapter that stood out to me, because it was the perfect Michi interaction:

So he asked her to dinner, sending a written apology note down to her small cubicle several stories below his feet.

She replied almost instantly: Jackass. 

He responded: Pick you up at eight? 

She agreed: Buy me flowers, too. 

Ah, Mimi, Mimi. How he missed someone who could talk back without fear. Welcome home, he grinned to himself.

To me, Michi is so compatible, because their personalities just go well together. They’re both headstrong but they’re both also very passionate and kind. I love seeing them portrayed with the whole “love to tease you” dynamic. And that passage in OA is an excellent example of that. Honestly, Pied Piper has such an exquisite grasp on these characters. I knew then that this fic was going to be splendid, and boy, did it deliver! I read it in the course of three evenings.

I will forever love both these stories. Then again I will forever love all the stories Pied Piper wrote. Just thinking about them makes me want to re-read every single one of them (except that I sadly lost a couple over the years…) 

02 ⚘ Creative License by R.vdPI’m kind of cheating again, haha, because technically this wasn’t really Michi. Daikeru, a ship I love so much next to Michi (thanks to this fic actually), was the main pairing of this story, but Michi was definitely heavily featured. But I just loved this story so much! Unfortunately it was deleted several years ago. (Around 2007, iirc.) 

That being said, I still feel lucky to have read this story. I can’t begin to explain how amazing it was! It was so cleverly constructed. Each chapter focused on a certain aspect of the story, and with each chapter we learned more and more what happened to these characters in the past and how they’re ultimately connected to other characters. It was all intricately interwoven. The writing style was also so crisp, so poetic, so inspiring. Plus, while the Michi was very angsty, it was very hot. I still haven’t read a nsfw Michi that came close to their scenes in this story. 

01 ⚘ My Captain’s Lady by Pied PiperIs there any surprise that MCL is my ultimate favourite? 

The truth is: This isn’t just my favourite Michi fic. This isn’t even just my favourite Digimon fic. This is my ultimate favourite fic ever.

It was the very first fic that got me so hooked. I started reading MCL after chapter fifteen or so (don’t remember the exact chapter anymore, since y’know, it was eleven years ago) and kept checking for the next update. It was really bad with the final chapter, because it was New Year’s Eve and I continuously pressed refresh so eagerly awaiting the update and then when it was finally there I read it between the different courses of dinner. 

I loved it so much that I was raving about it non-stop to my best friend that she, who hadn’t watched a single episode of digimon, even wanted to read it. So I lend her my binder of MCL and I like that she texted me her thoughts a few times. I kept those texts, even after ten years, until I had to buy a new phone last summer. 

Sentimental experiences aside, the story itself is just so epic. It had everything: an intriguing plot, an amazing build-up, lots of suspense and action, and of course a compelling romance between Taichi and Mimi. Once again, the journey of the characters and their relationship was so moving and so captivating. And I loved every step of the way.
