Shadowrun: Neon Fire announcement post.
Hello, and welcome to the development thread for Shadowrun: Neon Fire, a free passion project designed to try to merge together the genres of IF and tabletop roleplaying game! It’s likely to be more stat-heavy than you’re used to, featuring dice-rolls and character sheets and all that jazz, but I still want it to tell a compelling story with choice and consequence, too. It’s set in the Sixth World, the well-established fictional universe of the Shadowrun TTRPG, a fusion of high fantasy and cyberpunk, where magic meets machine. Ever wanted to be a shotgun-toting elf who can command drones with their mind? A smooth-talking, sharp-suited ork conman? A dwarven hacker who can project his consciousness into the Matrix and access even the most well-guarded secrets? Or a big troll mage who combines mastery of the arcane arts with a mean aim with a rifle? Well, now’s your chance! (More setting info can be found in the in-game Codex. Yes, there’s a Codex).
Anyway, give it a go and see what you think. I’ll put some quick FAQs below.
What the hell is this? It’s an experiment, which involves seeing what happens when you port (simplified) versions of a TTRPG system into Choicescript. It probably uses dice-rolls and RPG mechanics more extensively than any other game, with the exception of Alice Chan’s brilliant but mad Warhammer 40k if/rpg hybrid, Holy Ordos. And it’s a love letter to one of my all-time favorite fictional settings.
Do I need to know about the Shadowrun universe to enjoy it? I hope not! I’m trying to be newbie friendly. For those who really want to dive into the lore, there’s the aforementioned Codex. But it shouldn’t be necessary to understand what’s going on.
Will you get in legal trouble for this? I don’t think so, because I’m not selling it. This is a fan project, which will always be free for anyone to enjoy on Dashingdon. I don’t plan to make a dime off of someone else’s IP. I put this in the same category as fanfiction and fan art, and there’s a ton of fanfiction and fan art of Shadowrun out there, so I should be OK.
What’s the actual story about? In Neon Fire, you play as an experienced shadowrunner (a highly-skilled mercenary criminal, doing illegal jobs for rich clients, usually representatives of the megacorporations who rule the Sixth World). You’re based in Seattle (the classic Shadowrun setting), but early in the game you receive a call from an estranged relative to go and investigate some mysterious goings-on in Neo-Tokyo related to your family’s past. More than that would be spoiling at this very early stage!
Are there romances? Yes, but not yet! Right now, there’s only the Prologue, where you go on a mission with your established Seattle crew, and which doesn’t strongly relate to the main story (it’s intended as an introduction to the universe and to the rules). You’ll meet the ROs early in the next update, after you’ve headed out to Neo-Tokyo. They’ll be fully gender-selectable, and are an interesting bunch. Info on the ROs, for those who are interested, can be found here.
Will there be troll sex? Yes. In the grim dark future, there is only troll sex.
The link to the game is below. Enjoy, and do let me know what you think, or what you’d like to see from this!

This Jewelry Will End Up Killing Me - Prologue
So guess who decided to make the first chapter to a Daminette Konosuba AU. I’m using the world and rules of it more so than the characters, but this would definitely be more comedic than my other two fan fictions. If I get good feedback, I might continue it. This is just the world set up.
Damian stirred a bit and struggled to open his eyes. The light coming from below him made him flinch as he struggled to adjust to the brightness. “Oh good, you’re coming to.”
“Huh?” His vision began to focus a bit more and he noticed he was in a dark space with no one around but a lone woman. She sat in a throne and folded her hands over her lap. She smiled kindly at him, but her eyes were filled with pity. “What?”
“Do you know who you are?”
He thought for a moment and nodded, “My name is Damian Wayne.”
“Anything else?” He thought a bit more before she asked, “Do you remember how you died?”
“I died?” Suddenly memories came flooding back to him. He was with his family. They were on a mission. Something went wrong. Terribly, terribly wrong. He noted how he was still wearing his uniform but was surprised it was undamaged. He placed a hand over his abdomen and shuttered, “I don’t think my body was intact.”
“No, but you died quickly. It was merciful and for that I am thankful.” She placed her hand over her heart and sighed, “You left your world too soon. You have transformed so much. You’ve grown to be such a fine young man.” She frowned, “I’m so sorry for you and your family’s loss. They are still fighting, but they mourn.”
Damian tensed, “Wait! My family! They need me! I need to go back!”
“I cannot do that.” She held out her hand, “Damian, I am the goddess of creation. My name is Tikki. I am here to assist you in your passing.”
“My passing?”
“Yes.”
“I’m not ready to go yet!”
“I may reincarnate you, but you would not remember your past life. You will start anew.”
“I can’t do that either! I have to get back to them right now!”
She bit her lip, “There is one way, but I do not recommend it.”
“Tell me.”
She waved her hand and a book appeared before it floated down in front of her. The book opened and pages started flying out of the bindings. The pages flew around the two before lining up in front of him. “In another world, one very different from yours, we have had a problem with who we call Hawkmoth. The people of the world call him a demon who controls people through their emotions, but we gods and goddesses know the truth.” He noted how her fists clenched as she spoke of him, “The Demon King was like you, but bitter. The Demon King stole the powers of one of our own and now we can no longer stop him. We haven’t even been able to watch over him. Our information on the Demon King has been significantly restricted.”
“How restricted?”
“Our line of information and communication to Nooroo was severed 18 years ago.”
Damian grimaced, “What can I do?”
She bit her lip before proceeding, “Us deities have decided we would grant any wish to the hero who brings this man down. This is your only chance at resurrecting at the exact place and time when you died.”
“I’ll take it.”
“Damian-”
“I’ll take it. I’ve faced aliens, magic, and literal demons from hell. With my history, I can do it. I can’t leave my family.”
Tikki nodded and pointed at the pages between them, “You may take one thing with you to this new world. Along with this, you will continue to have your memories and will gain knowledge of the language to help you integrate better.”
He looked at the pages and noted how odd each of the items were, “What kind of world is this?”
“In your world, the best comparison is what your people call ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ or ‘RPGs’. This world is older, magic and monsters run amok, nobles and monarchy are the norm leadership, and leveling is the only way to power up in your classes.” She chuckled, “It may be an exciting world for you to learn new skills and magic you never would’ve in your world.”
“Magic? Monsters? Sounds like a bad videogame, but something I can work with.” He turned his attention back to the pages in front of him. He examined each one; a sword, a staff, a suit of special armor, and much more. Still, despite all the perks and charms, nothing seemed quite right. “I can’t use any of these.”
“Hm?”
“I can’t use any of these.” He pushed the pages away to look her in the eye, “If I’m going to take on someone using a deity’s power, I’m going to need a deity’s power too.” Damian sighed, “I need your power.”
Tikki smiled and hummed, “You were always a smart one. Always one to look at all the right angles.” She sighed and looked at her lap, “I cannot give you too much for obvious reasons but what I can give you is a tool made by my power.” She held out her hand and a glowing orb appeared in her palm. She placed her other hand over it and squeezed hard before opening her hands. She blew onto the orb and Damian watched as the orb faded away until what was left was a pair of earrings. “If you use this, you will be able to transform and use some of my power. However, if you find one of my direct decedents, they will be able to tap into my true powers and you will never fail.”
She hummed a sweet tune and the ground below him started glowing, “Damian Wayne, you will awaken in the town of crossroads where you will be guided by a fairy of my own essence. Keep her safe and she will guide you both to glory and to reliable party members. I will speak to the others. More tools of our own creation will fall before you as you continue your quest.”
He nodded and noticed how the floor below him began glowing. A wall of light circled him and he began levitating, “Tikki?”
“With the blessing directly from the goddess of creation, I send you off. Please, Damian, do not die.”
He nodded, “I’ll do my best. Watch over my family.”
“Of course.” The light became blinding and he felt his body fade away as he reincarnated. The last thing he heard was a simple “good luck” before he woke up on a bench. He looked around and Tikki was right, this really was a Dungeons and Dragons type of world. Horse-drawn carriages passed him by along with men and women all in medieval-looking armor and clothing. No real technology, but the world’s civilization seemed advanced enough for him to grasp the probable concepts and rules. He noticed how some people began crowding around him and whispering. He looked down and realized his clothing was probably making him stand out, “Right. Now, where do I go?”
He felt a tap on his side and opened up his cape slightly. A large red and black fairy hid behind the clothing but smiled. He was comforted by the company and began walking. “Okay. Where do I go fairy?”
He felt the creature travel up to his hoodie and it whispered in his ear, “You can call me Tikki. I am part of her after all.” He nodded and she peeked at the town around her, “Okay, you will want to go to the adventure’s guild. Receive your class and skillset and register yourself as an adventurer.”
“Should I hide my identity?”
She shook her head, “You do not need to hide your identity here. This is a new world and your real name will be on the registration card. Besides, with your standing and background, you may pass as some kind of noble. You could use that to your advantage as you work your way through this world and gain skill points.”
“Skill points? Are you serious?”
“Yes, it is the only way for us to gain enough strength and resources later.” He rolled his eyes and followed her directions while taking in the sights. The place came out of a storybook and it seemed the currency resembled gold. He’d need to ask Tikki how to get money. He felt someone staring at him and looked around before noticing a girl staring at him outside of a bakery. Once they locked eyes she visibly tensed. “I sense someone of great importance.”
“Huh? Where?”
“I don’t know.”
He scanned the area some more, but his sights kept locking back onto the girl staring at him. He could tell his fuse was getting short and it was obvious she wasn’t going to stop any time soon. He grumbled and finally stomped over. She flinched and stepped back while turning her attention anywhere else. “Hey! What do you want from me?”
“Eh? I wasn’t- I mean, I didn’t- I mean, what are you talking about?” She laughed nervously and rubbed the back of her neck, but he clearly wasn’t buying it. When she realized that wasn’t going to work she started apologizing profusely, “I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I don’t usually stare at strangers! I’m sorry!”
He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, “What do you want?”
“It’s just-”
“Spit it out!”
“I’ve never seen anyone with your clothes before and I’m a designer and-”
He snapped at her, “Then take a picture!”
She blinked, “A what?”
He flinched. A camera may not even be a concept in this world yet, “Ah, um, right. Never mind.”
She nodded and smiled, “May I draw it at least?”
Tikki tugged at his hoodie and he shook his head, “I need to register as an adventurer right away.”
She perked up, “Wait!” She stepped forward and leaned in, “You’re going to the adventure’s guild?” He stepped back but she continued to be persistent, “Can I come?”
“Now why would a little girl like you want to go?”
She puffed up her cheeks, “Hey! I bet we’re not even that far apart in age from each other! Just because I wear pigtails doesn’t mean I’m little!”
“I didn’t say anything about your pigtails.”
She blushed and pulled at them slightly, “Sorry. Everyone mentions them so it’s a habit.” She shook her head, “But, please! I want to look at the armor of the new adventurers! My lady-”
“MARINETTE!” The girl in front of him flinched. The two turned to see a blond girl strutting towards them. She was pulling another blonde behind her with a trail of servants. The girl next to him, presumably Marinette, hid behind him.
Her voice wavered, “Oh, hello Lady Bourgeois. Mister Agreste.”
The boy being pulled around laughed, “Sorry Marinette. I tried to hold her back.”
Lady Bourgeois stopped in front of him and seemed to size him up, “And who are you? Where are you from?”
If this was a noblewoman, to get anywhere with her he needed her to see him as an equal. Tikki continued to vibrate meaning the person of interest was extremely close. Right now, he needed to level with this girl. “I am the only blood son of the Wayne enterprises in a land called Gotham. I set out on my own to help my family. My name is Damian Wayne.” He bowed and silently thanked his father and mother for teaching him to speak as a nobleman. Business meetings and galas were incredible practice for this. The man seemed to buy it, but the lady seemed skeptical.
“I have never heard of Gotham.”
“Chloe, please. He seems genuine.”
“Adrikins-”
“Please don’t call me that.”
“I’m looking for the adventure’s guild. If you could, I would be grateful for any help.” He hated the helpless act but if these people were noble then they had money. He needed money.
“Gross, why go to a building filled with a bunch of sweaty filthy warriors?” She sighed, “But alright. Fine. Marinette!”
Marinette stood as stiff as a board, “Y-Yes?”
“You’ll be his guide.” Chloe snapped her fingers and a servant ran up to her with a small pouch in his hands. She pointed at him and the man presented the pouch with a bow, “As an offering between one noble to another. I hope to see you soon and out of those awful clothes. Honestly, my goddess would smite you down if you showed up at her temple like that.”
“I don’t know. I like them.” Adrien grinned and sent him a thumbs up, “Don’t you think, Marinette?”
As soon as he addressed her she jumped, “Y-Yeah! His awesome are clothes! I mean, his are awesome clothes! I mean-”
Damian closed his eyes and sighed, “Let’s go, Marinette.” She nodded and looked at him with complete gratitude. She mouthed a silent “thank you” and he nodded. This was easier for both of them. “Once I’ve registered I’ll find you. I’d be honored to learn more about this land from you all.”
Chloe seemed pleased by his manners and he turned away with a simple wave. Adrien sent him as salute and wink before turning back. Once they were fully departed, he relaxed a bit and sighed. “Marinette was it?”
She nodded, “Marinette Dupain-Cheng.”
“If you come with me to register and answer my questions I’ll let you measure, write, and draw every little detail of my uniform. Got it?”
She looked stunned at first, before grinning and nodding furiously. “Yes!”
“Then let’s go. I need to do this quickly.”
“Right!” Something told him this journey was going to be a long one.

Hello! I’m a big fan of your blog and I’ve got a question for you. Consider an AU where Daemon Blackfyre is born from Aegon IV having an affair with Rhaena rather than Daena, how do you think he’d turn out? I’m curious on your thoughts as to how having a different parentage might change Daemon.
Hello! I’m glad you’re enjoying reading my blog :)
The scenario you propose is one I haven’t thought of because Rhaena is far and away the least developed of the Targaryen characters of her generation. I’m not going to say “she would never have an affair” because as it stands most of the information on her is from semi- or non-canon sources: the 2006 SSM and the MUSH RPG tree that reveals she was the sister Daeron I betrothed to the Sealord of Braavos. She gets about one and a half sentences to herself in The World of Ice and Fire, which itself contradicts some of the information in the SSM: the SSM states that she never chafed at her confinement whereas twoiaf says she protested Baelor’s Maidenvault along with her sisters; depending on which one is true (for obvious reasons, I prefer the universe where she doesn’t agree with being imprisoned for a decade), leads to vastly different interpretations of the character. We know more about Rhaena’s breast size (that they were fuller than Daena’s at 14; thanks a lot, George) than her interactions with her siblings and cousins. All we know for sure is that she was pious and became a septa later in life.
The question is then whether Rhaena would still become a septa if she had a child, or be like Elaena and have to leave him behind (it’s nearly impossible from what we know about illegitimate children of noblewomen that Elaena brought Jon and Jeyne Waters with her to Plumm lands). If Rhaena did become a septa soon after Daemon’s birth and Aegon’s ascension, and left him as a baby to be raised by Daena (as I think might’ve happened with the Waters twins), then perhaps not much would change: Daemon is still raised mostly by the Targaryen-loving Daena, who probably encouraged his athletic pursuits, and spends time training with master-at-arms and Aegon IV’s ally, Quentyn Ball.
Daemon might’ve felt unloved by Rhaena in the “why didn’t she stay with me?” sense that some of the illegitimate children feel in asoiaf (thinking about Jon Snow’s fantasies of his “beautiful, highborn, kind-eyed” mother, and he had a decently happy childhood in Winterfell). Since in canon Baelor starved himself to death "in penance” for Daena’s child, switching the sister to Rhaena could have devastating psychological effects for the both of them, since the SSM implies she and Baelor were close (that her piety was influenced by Baelor, and even twoiaf compares her piety to his); a plausible scenario could be Rhaena joining a motherhouse and leaving her child as a form of penance, as she blames herself for Baelor’s death.
Without Daena’s loving act of self-sacrifice by refusing to name the father at the cost of her reputation, and instead an absent mother mourning the death of her jailer “Baelor the Beloved”, Daemon might’ve even felt unwanted despite Daena’s best efforts (again, thinking of Jon Snow, who still internalized the “bastard prejudices” despite having a loving father and half-siblings). So perhaps a Daemon-son-of-absentee Rhaena is a little sadder, more jaded from early childhood, and less willing to get hurt reaching out to abrasive family members (by which I mean Aegor and Brynden Rivers).
But supposing Rhaena does put off becoming a septa to raise her son (and you could argue that sewing the Mother’s face on her clothing indicates that, like Aelinor Penrose, she did want children) and successfully opposes Viserys and Aegon’s attempts to marry her off (as Daena did. GRRM’s SSM says Rhaena was “meek and passive”, but I’m going with the twoiaf version that stands up for her freedom). Considering what happened to Falena Stokeworth at Viserys II’s hands for daring to have sex with Aegon IV, I’ll assume that she refuses to name Aegon IV as the father.
A Daemon raised by Rhaena at King’s Landing would perhaps be more openly interested in fashion; Rhaena loved to sew and embroider, and I could see him taking an interest in this because his mother was and encouraged him. We’re not sure how pious Daemon was in canon (although according to his supporters, he was blessed by the Seven), but as Rhaena’s child he might be more so, and might’ve wanted to serve the Warrior’s Sons instead of the Kingsguard as a boy. It might even be possible that as in the real-life example of Princess Rotrude daughter of Charlemagne and her illegitimate son Louis, that he could’ve followed Rhaena into the Faith and become part of a guard for a particularly high-ranking Septon.
However, I don’t think this Daemon’s new interests would have made Aegon stop being interested in him, especially after Aegor and Brynden proved to be “unsuitable heirs”; and I don’t think they would’ve endeared the grudge-prone Da3ron II to him either. So I don’t think their schemes regarding Daemon would’ve changed.
What I think the most important change in Daemon’s character would be having Rhaena as a mother is that he’s introduced earlier on to the Targaryen legacy is not a shining ideal to protect. Rhaena is the only known Targaryen to have abandoned their name for a higher calling by choice, rather than being given to the Faith or Citadel by her parents or married off (although they technically are still part of the Targaryen House) or forced to run away. Most of the Targaryen women are proud to be born of the house of “fire and blood” and dragons, but unlike Daena and even Elaena, Rhaena did not have any explicit connection to that legacy. Daemon knowing that his mother could’ve become a septa and give up her name, seeing her honoring the Mother and the Maiden over Rhaenys and Visenya, having her tell him tales of the Warriors’ Sons over those of brave Targaryen warriors, would have radically changed his idea of who the Targaryens are. With that he might be more open to criticism of Targaryen brutality and egotism, at least with regards to burning septs and trying to rewrite the laws of the Faith to suit their own ends (Jaehaerys and the Doctrine of Exceptionalism allowing incest, Baelor’s misogynist laws on chastity and moving the Faith’s capital to King’s Landing where they became a tool of the Targaryens). That might result in a Daemon that doesn’t hold onto Blackfyre and his sigil as symbols of identity and strength, but the chivalric code and Faith precepts. That might have serious political implications if the reason why he rebelled (if rebel he did, and wasn’t just arrested based on a rumor) had something to do with Aegon IV and Da3ron II making a mockery of the Targaryen legacy as related to him by Daena.
tl;dr depending on whether or not Rhaena was there to raise him, I think were she his mother Daemon may have been more wary of the Targaryens as a family and his place among them as an illegitimate prince. He may have cultivated different interests that Rhaena encouraged, and might have been more outwardly serious and guarded at court. Whether that meant he’d be less popular or less effective in combat is anyone’s guess, but I don’t think Aegon’s plans and Da3ron II’s counter-plans for him would’ve changed much.

Hello! I've just heard about the litrpg genre, and Ms Lethargyspecialist suggested you might be a good person to ask for an opinion. If you're interested, would you mind sharing your take?
hehehe freya is presuming i know more about it than i do! I think @javert might be a better person to ask.
to the best of my knowledge - as you’ve already presumably found out - litrpg is fiction which follows various genre conventions of computer RPGs, particularly the diegetic existence of game abstractions like experience points and levels, but it could instead be the existence of game-like settings such as dungeons even if the characters don’t explicitly follow game mechanics.
it overlaps heavily with the isekai genre, which was previously known in the west as portal fantasy, stories in which someone from our world ends up in a fantasy world. many early fantasy stories like Narnia, Chrestomanci or Three Hearts, Three Lions followed this mould, but for whatever reason it’s pretty much gone out of fashion in the west... while it’s had a big resurgence in Japan in the last few years.
a steotypical isekai story has a nerd from our world end up in a computer game world, where their familiarity with RPGs allows them to get a leg up and become comparatively superpowered. but that’s long since passed through all kinds of parody, so now it does seem like most isekai stories are at least somewhat self-aware responses to an established genre (the protagonist might even mention having read web novels).
for some reason, this has been by far the biggest genre of online serial, particularly in Japan but also to some extent in the west. there’s been a whole wave of recent anime which are adapted from light novels which began life as isekai web novels, which I think is partly riding on the success of Sword Art Online (probably the anime series i most regret watching lmao). this also seems to have spread to the west, I’m told that a lot of the work on sites like Royal Road falls in the litrpg genre. this seems to have become a kind of self-sustaining ecosystem: people get into litrpg, and write litrpg web novels primarily for the existing audience of litrpg fans.
recs?
as far as litRPG I actually like... I have a guilty pleasure in Kumo Desu Ga, Nani Ka? (So I’m a Spider, So What?), which is probably the most conventional litrpg isekai I’ve read. I unreservedly love Dungeon Meshi, which doesn’t have diegetic game mechanics (indeed going to great lengths to imagine plausible ecology for a magical dungeon) but clearly takes most of its setting inspiration from RPGs.
the Fate series is sprawling and mostly bad, and originally adapted from an eroge visual novel rather than an RPG, but it definitely follows the logic of an RPG in the way its whole magic tournament is set up, with each character having a special move and unique item and so on. (no wonder it was perfectly suited to gacha-isation). Fate Zero (written by good old Gen Urobuchi, of Madoka and Psycho-Pass fame) is probably the main thing worth extracting from that, and if you like that, Unlimited Blade Works is pretty good - I’m advised it’s the least objectionable retelling of the original game and the one which most directly follows the arc of Zero.
in terms of recent anime, I might recommend Deca-Dence - it’s much more along the lines of action + drama in the Gurren Lagann/Studio Trigger mould (albeit with more emphasis on characterisation than you tend to get from Imaishi, bless him), but it’s one which includes a sci-fi MMO-like game fairly prominently. the main characters aren’t actually playing the game, though, it’s more of an overt metaphor for captalism and the state, so it’s not really litrpg in any traditional sense!
considering these haphazard examples, you can have stories which are literally set in an imagined computer game, or stories set in a fantasy world which happens to work like a computer game. and you can take a diverse set of inspirations from games - mechanics, conventional settings, structure. i’m not sure if there’s like, a purist definition of litrpg which is more restrictive than what I’ve given.
anyway, this isn’t really my field, I have no idea what the actual web novel side of it is like, and I’m sure there’s great stuff out there I just haven’t read/watched!
I would also say that, as I understand the term, it is technically possible to have a litrpg computer game... which is when one game simulates another kind of game. the game I have in mind is CrossCode, which is a Zelda-like puzzle + top-down action game with a linear story... but diegetically it’s set in a high-tech future MMO. the characters talk about game systems, but they’re fictional game systems, and not the ones you’re playing with!
appeal?
as far as the appeal of conventional litrpg [and isekai] goes, a few speculations...
it has a very clear and satisfying (if pulled off well) structure. the protagonist starts out weak, but survives by learning about the game’s systems and outwitting her opponents; eventually we get the satisfaction of seeing her solve the systems and turning the tables on them (and then the plot can go somewhere else)
it’s got a nice ‘what if’ element: ‘wouldn’t this be a cool game if it was real’
it’s very appealing to the kind of reader who likes everything to be systematised, ‘magic’ as a kind of alternate physics. you can have your characters use a ‘magic system’ which could fit in an TTRPG sourcebook... or you could just stop kidding and straight-up have an RPG system underlie everything. or at least, the appearance of one!
when you play a computer RPG, the emphasis is usually on delivering a story... but there’s almost always a huge disconnect between the story the game is ostensibly telling, and your own experience of it as a game system. you’re constantly filling in the gaps and brushing over disconnects between the game and the story; if you’re in an MMO, you’re blanking out the other player characters, ignoring the janky unrealism of the combat system. so it’s a fun thought experiment to imagine if the characters in the story could perceive how things ‘actually’ work, and erase that divide.
it’s automatically a bit silly and self-aware which inspires a certain kind of attitude in the writing... or at least should do. (there’s some embarrassingly self-serious entries out there)
it definitely inspires a sort of ‘I could write one of these!’ attitude, much like fanfic
also much like fanfic, the ‘rpg world’ where people are questing and killing monsters provides a kind of familiar meta-setting that doesn’t need explanation - just as a fic can lean on your familiarity with the characters and setting of its source work.
all that said, I personally find the subsubgenre of litrpg set in a pseudo-european fantasy setting incredibly unappealing, and hope it goes out of fashion! but i do feel like using game mechanics in a story still has as much potential as any other fantasy device, and a lot of people seem to be having fun exploring it; heck i’ve been vaguely wondering how i’d go about it, what stones remain unturned.
so yeah, that’s my take on litrpg... as someone who doesn’t really read any litrpg :p

HELLO AND WELCOME TO A LIST OF FACTS ABOUT TOMO, some useless and some not so useless!! It’s a toss-up, really. Apologies in advance for the length but I didn’t feel like smacking this one under a Read More ): Some of these are from the intro post I wrote for him when I made him for a closed rpg and some of these are newer things I forgot to write down beforehand. Some of this is also referenced in his bio page. I’m not really going to double-check if I’ve repeated myself anywhere so, if I have, sorry about that! But, hopefully, you can learn a little more about Tomo from this! I’m just dumping these all together like this as they’re mostly quick pieces of trivia and posting them all as individual headcanon posts would be a pretty clunky task? If you wanna know anything else about him, always feel free to ask!
Tomo does not take especially well to nicknames unless they’ve been approved by Tomo himself. If you give him a nickname out of the blue, he’ll probably address it directly and tell you he doesn’t like it. So far, approved nicknames are Tomo (of course) and KatsuTomo --- that one’s more of fan-title-nickname rather than one he actually uses but he came up with it himself, tweeting it out like ‘you guys can call me katsutomo from now on if you like ^^’ before changing all his handles to that exact name. Nice.
On the other hand, he does NOT like being called Tomohiko. The only people who call him that are his mum and grandparents. It’s not that he dislikes the name itself but he doesn’t believe it suits him and is much more comfortable with Tomo.
Tomo doesn’t really have any delusions of grandeur in regards to being famous or anything like that. He prefers to detach himself from the concept of fame, even though he can’t really do that and it’s not how it works, and that can cause problems in the long run but it mostly means he’s usually fairly down to Earth. He probably has more famous friends than otherwise but that’s just because they’re in closer proximity. Because Tomo’s a friendly person, he’d probably be willing to befriend most people so long as they’re not shitty-fuck-awful.
He’s not very good at watching himself in films. It depends on the film and he can do it. He will do it. It’s just a bit of a weird experience? But, uhhhh, let’s just say he once watched the one horror film he was in at the cinema (and didn’t like most of it bc he hates horror films) but he laughed during his own death scene. There were tears in his eyes. Real tears.
He’s scared of bugs and ghosts. (for reference, i have had him join a conversation (in an ic groupchat) by making jokes about the place everyone was staying was haunted btu it turned back on him when it became clear he actually thought ghosts were scary and then he refused to go to sleep bc he’d convinced himself he was gonna get haunted.....) For the record, he doesn’t dislike ghosts or think they’re bad/evil. He’s just easily spooked!! You could probably tell him his awful long furby was demon and, despite him realistically drawing the line at demons & absolutely telling you you’re an idiot, he’d still get a little upset if you repeated it enough times. Whereas bugs? Definitely evil.
He doesn’t like dating because…well, he likes the IDEA of it but he’s the type to really fall for someone and BASICALLY? He’s scared of being dumped! He’s a bright & appealing personality with just enough edge to balance it out but he’s a bit of an emotional screwball and he feels like getting people interested is easier than keeping them interested, leading to mixed experiences with dating so he’s...kinda...settled for sleeping around a little instead. Oh well, whatever works! (does it actually work? shhhh it’s a secret…)
Like...he’s kind of an emotional wreck. He does his best not to show it on the surface and the whole...being a good actor thing probably helps with that but, beneath the top layers of Sparkly Glam Tomo, shit’s all scrambled up. He doesn’t really know what to make of himself. Acting and having friends present are the only things, he believes, keeping him grounded and together.
I’ve basically said this before but he really likes cute shit. This isn’t really reflected in how he dresses or acts or anything like that; it’s not part of the aesthetic. He just owns a lot of expensive Hello Kitty-branded shit because...it makes him happy?
He owns a kaninchen/rabbit (smaller than miniature) dachshund called Chicken (she looks roughly like this image i snagged off of google). Chicken Katsumura. It’s a terrible pun. He’s not sorry.
His hair is currently bright red. It’s a recent change (so it’s not something he’s known for) but he wanted to make a visual statement and that was that. He likes to go for more interesting colours when he’s not filming anything because it’s the only time he really gets to. I mean, he still has dyed hair in a lot of his films but it’ll usually be brown or blonde or something else more ‘realistic’.
Tomo cares a LOT about the way he dresses and styles himself. He’ll probably complain if he has to do a promo/magazine shoot and he doesn’t like the outfit he’s been given. It doesn’t actually help him half the time and he just gets told to shut up but it’s the PRINCIPLE of it !!!!!!!!
Tomo is a competent singer. This is because, growing up, his mother made him take singing lessons in the hopes that he might follow in her idol footsteps. He was not in the least bit interested but it was fun enough for him not to complain about it (not that it would’ve helped) and, if nothing else, it helped him get the lead role in school plays. His mum is secretly happy he’s best friends with a popstar because, hey, close enough.
He’s watched his dad’s films. He doesn’t think he was a very good director, he was better at acting, and is kind of mad that he was ignored as a kid in favour of that shite. I can’t say he was a big fan of his dad in general but he can’t really say anything about it since he’s...dead. I’ve said before that he’s always at odds with his mum but he actually does care about her. He can’t stay in a room with her for too long if she starts lecturing him and has hung up on her mid-call many times but he DOES love her a lot. As guilty as he feels about it, he’s not sure he can say the same about his dad.
He hates being asked about his dad in interviews --- he’d rather not be asked about his parents too much in general but going to Japan and being asked about his mother instead was weirdly refreshing for him. He’d rather talk about his mum’s short string of innocent pop hits than a bunch of films he actively dislikes.
When it comes to food, he doesn’t have especially refined tastes. His favourite food is tuna-mayo onigiri from 7-Eleven. Maybe this why he doesn’t judge Minwoo for his pretends-to-be-a-vegetarian-so-ppl-won’t-complain-abt-his-fussy-eating scam.

104th SSBU Mains
In the midst of playing Super Smash Bros Ultimate and the trailer for the second half of SNK’s third season, this heap of crap came out of nowhere and now it’s the only thing I can think about
I don’t know a lot about some of these series so please excuse me for any mistakes or inaccuracies!
x-x-x
Eren: Roy. He got into Fire Emblem when he first played SSB:Melee, and he fell in love with that red-haired boy. When he plays Ultimate, Eren is less likely to stick to one character (his argument is that “everyone is good and I love all of them DON’T MAKE ME CHOOSE”), but when he has to, he knows his boy Roy is there for him. Alternatives are Ryu, Mega Man, and Zelda, which, in his mind, if you’re going to play anyone, they’re the best options.
Fun fact: half of the reason he plays Ryu is to bug Armin to be Ken since “they’re best friends and we’re best friends and you look like Ken.” Same for Simon and Richter.
Mikasa: Young Link. LOZ is her favorite video game series by far (Majora’s Mask is her favorite hmu about Mikasa headcanons I love her) and when she heard he was coming back to Smash, she was sold on him before the game was out. She likes any Link, but Young Link has a charm and holds a lot of nostalgia for her. And she likes how he's the only one of the Link trio to have fire arrows. Alternatives are Yoshi (somewhat for the IRS meme but mostly for her fave green dinosaur), Mewtwo for the Pokemon representation, and Samus. Nothing beats an “I’m strong” catchphrase than the first female video game protag.
Armin: Mega Man. Of the video game series he’s gotten into, Legend of Zelda and Mega Man are the ones he’s most loyal too. For Ultimate, he’s more into the mini easter eggs that Mega Man’s moves give to other characters in the franchise than winning the game, and will probably play the single player modes the most, but he doesn’t mind fighting his friends. Alternatives include Pit, Pikachu and Falco; he doesn’t know much about Falco or Pit, except what he’s heard from everyone else, but it’s better than giving into Eren’s whim to play as Simon or Ken.
Jean: Ike. He grew up on that good old GameCube system, so of course he’d go to Ike, whose first game was for GC. He won’t admit it out loud, because he’s a Cool Guy™, but RPGs are near and dear to this boy’s heart. And what better way to share that love than with a blue-haired boy with a big ass sword? Also, he’s pretty good at Smash? So whatever smack talk he has is actually backed by some type of skill and experience. Alternative mains are Zelda, Young Link, and Pichu, all which took a very deep study of each character to develop. It was a serious decision.
Marco: Link. Like Armin, he has limited experience in videogame knowledge, and he’s just here to play with some characters and sass his friends. Link is the one he knows best, and the BOTW design is really pleasing to him. He’s really not here to win or show off how good he is cough cough Erejean. He just wants to have fun! And will do so in ways that make everyone regret handing him the controller, but he doesn’t know that. (Ridley just came out how the hell has he already mastered him?) Alternatives are Ness for the baseball references, Kirby for the deceit, and Marth for a cute blue-haired boy.
Fun fact: it’s a running joke among the 104th nerds that Ness’s design was inspired by Marco, and just to play into the joke, Marco has learned how to imitate Ness’s voice perfectly. For shits and giggles, he’ll spam the “okay” taunt if he’s doing better.
Sasha: Kirby. A classic, in her opinion, and the most versatile character since he can get the move of any player he inhales. There’s nothing more terrifying than a smiling pink glob hitting you with a hammer and nothing will change her mind. She put in so many hours to Kirby’s GBA and DS games when she was a kid that she can’t not play as him. Alternatives are Toon Link and Luigi for the GameCube nods, and Daisy. She makes up for losses by whispering “hi I’m Daisy” under her breath. It has a 95% chance of making them laugh.
Fun fact: the 104th buds have enforced a ban on Sasha’s Luigi when they’re playing together. He is too strong for mortal minds to comprehend.
Connie: Diddy Kong. The peanut gun really sold it for him, and he loves that Donkey Kong being the big goof that he is has a tiny sidekick like Diddy. He’s not here to win or compete seriously—he just wants to have fun. And that fun requires shooting peanuts and slapping opponents with his tail, but he’s not keeping track. Alternatives are Snake for laughs, Villager for the Look Of Death from that one skin (you know which one), and Peach. If he and Sasha are on a team, it’s a nightmare of hip bumps and golf clubs. If they’re facing off, No One Is Safe.
Reiner: Samus. As a kid, his mom wanted him to get into video games that were “safe for the kids” and so there was a bit of a limit to what he could play. But Metroid was something she okayed, and the series now has a special place in his heart. Samus is amazing to him? A bounty hunter in space who fights a giant dinosaur and is also a woman? He’s proud of that. Alternatives include Donkey Kong (more to play with Connie than anything else, really), Mario, and Olimar. Pikmin was another series he was able to play; if he had to choose, the white Pikmin are his favorite.
Bertholdt: Olimar. Sorta like Reiner, his video game knowledge is limited, but more by choice than anything. His knowledge stems from friends and his brothers playing DS games. (Their favorite is Spirit Tracks hmu about Bert headcanons I love him.) He chose Olimar, who he recognizes thanks to Reiner, but also because he looks like he is waaay out of his element. Which is how Bert feels 98% of the time. Alternatives are Marth, Shulk, and Pit; he didn’t choose them until he played at least some of their main games. (Which he did end up doing and enjoyed them all.)
Annie: Incineroar. She’s a Pokemon girl when no one’s watching, and that asshole cat pulling a clothesline on stage is exactly why she’s playing the game. She didn’t choose Litten when she played Sun/Moon (Rowlet is her dear round boy), but by god if she’s not going to take her chance. She was skeptical of Incineroar at his release but once she played him, she was a fan. The stone-like facade she wears playing him doesn’t help either—it’s win or death. Alternatives are King K. Rool, Zelda, and Ridley. She makes heavy characters look easy and the 104th does not appreciate it.
Ymir: Little Mac. A 5′7″ boxer from the Bronx is squaring up to fight a fire-breathing dragon, an anthropomorphic hedgehog, and a pink blob that wants to put her to sleep. It doesn’t matter—he’s here to beat everyone up and he won’t stop until he wins. She may be biased (modern au headcanon that she’s from the Bronx what up) which some will allege is her reason for picking Little Mac, but that’s just slander to her. Alternatives include Mega Man (after so many years of not having that iconic blue boy), Chrom (“that’s an ugly ass tattoo put some sleeves on”), and Sheik.
Fun fact: it takes every bit of her lesbian heart to not choose the girls because the 104th knows her attraction to long blonde hair and is waiting for her to do it. And sometimes, you need Peach to shut them up.
Historia: Marth. He’s a royal blue boy! Look at how pretty! Soft headcanon that Historia likes fighting games and RPGs because hello punching bad guys and using sword to battle evil? Yes please she wants that. She’ll distract everyone with praises of her character and “how beautiful” they are while attacking the 104th with every chance she gets. She’s here to win, and when she will, she just smiles and says “don’t worry we’re all winners.” But everyone knows who the One True Winner is. Alternatives are Ryu, Zero Suit Samus, and Pichu. When she chooses Pichu, the 104th buds know the game is over.

Hello Yuseirra! I am a fan of yours and think you’re great; I know you’ve probably answered this before but what program do you use for art? Do you use a different one for the art you make for your rpg game? I can’t wait to see future updates
Hello anon!// A fan..??/// wow..! 0///0) that’s an honor to hear, thank you so much for watching over me and my works!! Maybe I have in the past, but I don’t feel like I’ve answered a question like this for some time, so it’s totally fine! I’ll be glad to help you out!
To jump straight to the answer, I don’t use a different program to use specifically for my game project.. I’m currently using three different programs to draw in particular though, and they’re all great programs so I would like to mention about them all..!
The main program I use to draw is SAI2! You can download and use it from this website, and use it permanently after you purchase SAI 1 and apply the software user license you get after the purchase. (It’s in the explanations, but it’s explained more in detail in this post if you need it!) the price of this program is  5400JPY which is about.. 50 dollars. The program looks like this when you open it. SAI2 has some advantages over SAI1, which would be stuff like rulers, outlining, blur, autosaving, text input and so on. I think there are more new features but those are what I make use of the most :)
Tumblr media
I highly recommend this program because it’s lightweight, it has lovely pen pressure (I personally can’t move to other programs because its pen tools feel REALLY GOOD.. it’s the only program I have that allows me to draw in that sketchy and slightly messy style I have! ;v;) it’s really easy to use and it doesn’t force you to move your hands around all the time to press all the different icons like some other programs do. It’s all collected into a small part of the screen and it saves you a lot of time. Plus things look clean and it has almost everything you need if you want to make art!// I’ve made arts for videos and movies, and yes, this is also the program I used to make my game’s art. I edited pixels with this too!
Tumblr media
Like this!
The second program I mainly use is clip studio paint. This is a very promising program that’s been growing big since the past few years, and I say it has its strong points. I feel it’s going to get even better too because the program has been updating quite a bit, and the staff seems to be working vigorously! Here’s what my program looks like, and this isn’t what this program looks like initially: you can adjust its windows to help it suit you by clicking and dragging the interface. I remember struggling a lot to push and pull things in a way that makes me feel more comfortable (I haven’t used photoshop but I think the initial interface may look pretty similar to how things are arranged there)
Tumblr media
I use clip studio paint to edit my drawings. This program has a nice community that brings many free assets you could import and use (without any copyright issues too) and it also offers really cool features like the recently added auto-color (colorize) feature, gradient map (a blessing), special pens, auto-action.. and so on! I prefer SAI’s pen over clip studio’s so I mainly use this program to make adjustments and finalize my drawings, but it really depends on your own taste. My friend likes clip studio’s ones more than SAI’s and she ended up completely switching to this.
this program also costs about 50 dollars but it goes on sale every now and then, so keep an eye up for it if you’re interested! I bought mine when it was on half-price! and if I really do end up making a lot of money through art someday..(I can dream, right? ;v;) I might be able to afford the EX version which costs a lot more, but is suitable for making books, or creating animations.
The third program I’m using (and the most recent one I bought!) is aseprite! You can buy this program off steam or the official website. This seems to be a tool made solely for pixel art.. and I got it after seeing someone making really cool pixel animations with it.  Here’s how it looks like when you open it.
Tumblr media
(Junpei’s one lucky boy.. Chidori is so cute ;v;.. they deserve each other)
I’ve been making some pixel arts using this lately and it’s pretty nice!! I like how it allows you to make pixel animations/gifs nice and fast (although I wish its zoom feature feels less stiff.. things feel too big or too small at times) and the program is very straightforward and it does its thing. This costs about 15 dollars, and I bought it when it was on 25% sale on steam last winter sale. It was in my wishlist for over half a year but now that I got it, I feel like I’ll try pixel-arting a lot more!// Please read over the steam reviews before you get it because it’ll help you a lot on understanding what this program may offer..!
These are the programs that I’ve been using and loving!// I would wholeheartedly recommend them all, but there are also free programs out there as well and I’m sure there are many other options available! Thank you for looking out for my works, I will keep practicing, and I wish to bring works that you may enjoy! Hope this helps you! :)

Anime Expo 2017 - Irino Miyu
Tumblr media
It’s finally done! I know there are reports floating out there but I wanted to share my perspective.
Fun fact, Miyu's panel started at 10:30am on the same day as his autographs. So we had a pretty set schedule for that morning. Panel summary under the cut!
Justin Rojas of Funimation opened the panel and introduced Miyu onto the stage. And my gosh, Miyu came out looking so beautiful. He said hello in English (many cheers)! Makes me wonder where he's been taking his hiatus... D:
He said that his English wasn't good enough for public speaking, so he'd continue on in Japanese (nooo). He asked (in Japanese), How many of you can understand Japanese? (many, many hands) Everyone looked impressed and his translator said, Am I even needed here? (Yes, yes, please don't go! XD)
Justin started by asking Miyu to describe his career. He started when he was 4 in a children's company. He did many things like theatre and being extras in commercials and such, voice acting was then only a side thing. He got his big start in middle school when he was cast as Haku in Spirited Away.
Q: Can you give us any behind-the-scenes to the filming of Spirited Away?
It was a long time ago, but he did his best! He says he recorded in a movie theatre-like area instead of a booth. There was no glass between the actors and directors/producers like there normally is, so he could hear everything they were saying, even the criticisms! So that made him nervous. XD In the end, it was great to work with so many great actors and Miyazaki.
Q: His next big role was Kingdom Heart.
"I saw a cosplayer from Kingdom Heart. It was lovely." [English!] When Justin asked if he played video games previously, he answered "Of course!"
Final Fantasy, Mario; puzzle games, action, RPGs, you name it. He played as many hours as he could during 夏休み (summer vacation). He recently got a PS4 with the Kingdom Hearts skin and has KH 2.8. We'll be sure to tell him what we think of the game, neh? ;)
Q: Could he talk a little more about his character's development in Mobile Suit Gundam 00
"Eh... I do not know why you're laughing"
Without giving spoilers, Miyu said it was a challenge to keep the acting real. He wanted to focus on the emotional dilemma of his character's development from being a civilian in S1 to a pilot in S2. He didn't want to fight but he had to, something he feels is relatable to a lot of people. Unfortunately, he missed his chance to get inside of a Gundam... but at least he got to be in a plane that docked on a Gundam! And maybe in the other Gundam games, you can choose him as a pilot.
Q: Sugawara Koushi in Haikyuu
He's happy the show is as popular as it is because it very closely depicts what happens in Japanese high school. He focused again on his character Suga's dilemma, of wanting to play versus doing what's best for the team, i.e., have Kageyama as the starting setter. It's something everyone can relate to. And he hopes to be involved with future seasons of Haikyuu, as the manga is still going.
Q: re: his experience with Anohana
It was one of his milestone roles.  He liked the challenge showing emotions through a character with more human traits(?).
Q: Hyakuya Yuuichirou in Seraph of the End
He saw a similar struggle in Yuichiro's dilemma with the previously mentioned characters. His defining characteristic for the show was the fantasy setting that it offered. It wasn't as popular in Japan, so he was surprised to see US fans of the show!
Q: Todomatsu in Osomatsu-san
Now, for this question, Miyu got a little animated. He said he was really surprised to see overseas fans of a show that was so based in Japanese-style comedy. He wanted to know what US fans found enjoyable about the show, even going so far as to ask a fan later during Q&A what she thought liked about the show!
Q: Akizuki Takao in Garden of Words
This was a bit different from his other works in that he was given a sample voiceover by the director during the audition that he followed after. Also, the artwork had already been completed by the time he came in to sub, which made following through with the character even more interesting.
Q: Did he have any specific approaches to Silent Voice as a movie that focuses primarily on communicating in a way that is not audible?
Miyu said even if there wasn't a lot of verbal communication, there was still that human-to-human connection. He wanted to properly convey the gut-wrenching feelings that he saw in Ishida.
Q: Hyuga Akito in Code Geass
This character was a lot more straightforward than other characters he's played. Miyu mentioned that the character directly chose him for the role because he saw a bit of Akito's character in Miyu himself.
Q&A
Q: What types of roles do you like performing?
There wasn't a real type he liked to play, although he appreciated the differences in conveying different emotions and characters to the audience. But in the end, he chose Sora!
Q: What was his experience with singing and/or stage musicals? [when he’s not doing voice acting]
All of the things he does, including singing (as a solo artist) or stage (in front of an audience) helps to develop his talents as a seiyuu.
Q: Did he draw on any personal experiences, e.g., bullying, to voice Akito in Silent Voice?
Thankfully he wasn't bullied in school, but he did do his best to insert how he felt during each situation that Ishida faced.
Q: Did he have any stories to share about Daily Lives of High School Boys?
He mentioned Tomokazu Sugita, who plays Tabata Hidenori. "many stories, all the time!" He mentioned that the seiyuu were given a bit of leeway in the script such that comedy/funny spots were prioritized over the written dialogue (which doesn't always happen). "No shame!"
Q: How does he approach situations where a director's view/criticism differs from the way he sees a scene going?
It happens all the time, but it's eventually the director's work in the end.
His ending message: "Thank you for listening. Thank you for your support so far. I hope you continue to support my work!"

Thoughts on Pangya Celebrity
Hello Sonik here with a new post or a follow-up post to So what is next for me? So, boys and girls, let's start this thing.
Tumblr media
I had no plans on making a post about Pangya but you might ask, what is Pangya? Is it some sort of an amazing MMORPG with action and blood and death and--
Golf. It's just golf but with anime theme and anime characters.
Pangya? I thought that it had closed or shut down?
And to that I say, my friend..
Tumblr media
Pangya Fresh Up is Fresh Down in the online grave bin. That game is DEAD, GONE, RIP
And you might ask, why are you talking about a dead game? See when an online game dies or gets shut down, the fans of said game will try to bring the game back from the dead for fans to enjoy.
We can't let sleeping dogs lie. What are you, stupid? Nah. We bring that back fam, with magic.
Tumblr media
By the power of fans, Pangya Celebrity is up on what they call, Private Servers. Magic servers that say "YOU CAN'T STOP ME"
Now for Pangya Celebrity.
Tumblr media
It's your normal run of the mill, golf game with online RPG elements that adds a spin on things (LOL GET IT? PUNS ' v')
You can level up your character or gear to make him or her better at golf.
If you like Anime
And Like anime ti-- Like Anime girls
And love Golf but in anime.
Pangya should fit your needs and more.
Want to be a anime guy? Ok
Want to be a anime girl who wears almost nothing with a mustache? Ok
Want to be a slooty Anime Girl? Ok
You can do all this and more on Pangya Celebrity
But anywho, getting off track here. Let's get going.
I want to clear up some things in my last post.
"There are games I don't plan on playing on stream or ever for that matter
LOL, TESO, Kaizo, Pangya. I'm not in love with these games like others are, they see something in the game I don't and that's fine."
While I have said I have no plans on playing these games like LOL, TESO, Kaizo, Pangya.
I guess I should be clear about this on Pangya.
> Seto Kaiba: "Because Sonik thinks Pangya is a silly game."
Ahem. Mokuba. Words I thought I would never say...
Tumblr media
I should send you to the shadow realm.
I think Pangya is a fine game for what it is. I played Pangya Fresh up when it was alive and I saw what the game had to offer me, it was not anything groundbreaking for me. It's Animu Golf and It's neat and all.
But Pangya is not my type of game, I never been a fan of sports games as they don't suit my need or give me a reason to play them. And no, I don't think Pangya is a silly game. It's not my game of choice is all.
If you like Pangya then hey more power to you and fun, It is a fine game like I said but someone may comment "Is lost seaway the reason you don't like Pangya?"
I would say no. But it doesn't help it either. Now I know I may or have been harsh on Pangya or just easy to dismiss it but I will give Pangya Celebrity, one last college try and see what I think about it then.
A reason I stopped playing Pangya is and this will sound petty in the eyes of others is that Pangya can be both a fun Casual game to play with friends and other players or a competitive game where it's serious.
But who or whom you play with can vary of what game you will get. You could get a very fun Casual game of Pangya or a very competitive game of Pangya.
The Casual side is where I enjoy playing Pangya more where you can have fun and be calm and have a good game or games and that is why I love the Casual side of Pangya.
And of course, we have the competitive side that turns me off from the game. I get that Pangya is meant to be competitive, go for the best score, get first place and upgrade your gear to help get closer to your goal, Aim for the best.
I could be wrong but that is what Pangya is meant to be but I'm not a Pangya player.
But look, I don't mind a competitive game once in a while but for me, I feel the fun for the game dies at that point when the game gets competitive, there is less laughing,  and less fun if any is left and in a competitive game it's easy to get hit with the competitive bug.
And competitive brings the worst out of people (No shit). I saw it but it's not all bad but that can vary from person to person but god damn when it is bad, it's BAD. I should know cause I was "competitive" and I did not like it.
Every mistake either annoys you or makes you sad, you forget to laugh or have fun at the small things or just end up forgetting to have fun or if the following above does not happen, the atmosphere that competitive brings for any game is not welcoming..
This is why I stopped playing it but I doubt people will see it the way I see it and that is completely fine. You have your opinions and I have mine.
I also stopped playing cause I was not having fun anymore and I didn't want to ruin the fun for them so I stopped as there was no need for me to keep playing.
But this is all I had to say on this matter of Pangya.
So thanks for reading and I hope this clears up things and there are no misunderstanding here.

You’re SPECIAL (FO4): Puppet Masters
Hello fellow deviants, still brony/MLP fans, Fallout Fans, and Fallout AND MLP fans, this is my final entry into revisiting the 'You're SPECIAL' series that were immensely popular for me back in 2015. What with Fallout 76 being a absolute trainwreck that can't get itself out of more and more bullshit, and Bethesda's arrogance and naivety getting the best of them, I hold no interest in continuing anything related to Fallout or MLP beyond this at this point. I merely continued making these when Fallout 76 did come out, and wanted to make a variant of the classics that mimics the attribution of points from Fallout 4, which is a far cry from the conventional RPG style of Fallout 3 and even 1 and 2. There is no fucking chance in hell that I'm going to do any kind of variant in regards to 76, as I don't even want to put my hands on such a wretched product. Anyhow...
This You're SPECIAL is a particularly interesting deviation from the format of both the classic and revised versions of my You're SPECIALS. For starters, I'm pitting up a good guy against a bad guy for a change, where I would either pit two good guys or two bad guys against one another. From Fallout:Equestria, we have Watcher, or otherwise known as Spike grown up, who with the use of spritebots, tries to lead Littlepip as well as other 'good ponies' to gather up the elements of harmony. while this has good intentions, most of that info is kept under the tablecloth as Spike is incredibly reclusive as a result of him being a fully grown dragon, a rarity in the post apocalypse. For Project Horizons, we have The Legate, the known leader of the Remnants, a zebra clan that still acts under the presumption that the great war is still ongoing and seeks to continue that as The Legate has lived for almost as long as Spike has. The Legate is also a puppet master in that he's exploiting both the means of Cognitum and Steel Rain to suit his own ends, meaning to take both of them down when their backs where turned but also used Blackjack's own interests in shutting both of them down to expedite that. As a result, both of these characters, whatever you may think of them, have their own nefarious goals in mind, bad or good.
A second deviation that I made in the process of making this You're SPECIAL is that I changed the number of how many points would be based on SPECIALS between the characters. Since I was making them based on the perks available rather than the other way around, I had to add more perk points to some of The Legate's stats so he could get the primary perks that focus on his playstyle. As a result, I had to add a completely new graphic to explain that these two don't distribute the same number of perk points to their BASE Specials, and realistically, they wouldn't. I decided that they would sit in the middle with being level 70, stronger than the sidekicks and malevolent relics, but weaker than the main protagonists in terms of level. To summarize the playstyles for both, The Watcher is a heavy hitter who uses technology, sporting high strength and high intelligence to capitalize on using power armor mainly. The Legate is a stealth based, melee based attacker who uses VATS to it's full potential. But more on the explanations soon.
Of Course, seeing that I haven't actually explained how I determined their SPECIAL stats, I'll explain them on top of explaining the perks I chose for them. The Watcher 'vector' was awkwardly cropped from a 'trading card' by
RinMitzuki
(although I think the actual vector came from
Hawk9mm
and/or
Noxxi-the-Noxxian
so I'm not sure who to credit exactly), to the point that I had to go for a 'background shadow' effect rather than the stroke gradience that I normally do, and The Legate vector came from
Vector-Brony
, the usual foil I go for the most quality vectors. It was fucking bitch to even find a vector for a grown up Spike and/or Watcher, so this was really the best I could find. Anyway, here comes another huge flood of text. Better hope you have a few hours to look at it!
STRENGTH
Watcher (10)
With Watcher being a fully grown dragon, even Spike doesn't even know his own strengths. Beyond size and stature, with heavy scales and muscles naturally toned from his very being, Watcher is the strongest of the bunch and very few could beat him.
The Legate (8)
While The Legate is a battleborne zebra fighter and a loyal devout of Fallen Caesar, even a pony sized anthro can't quite take the whole brunt of a giant ship or vessel like Watcher can. The Legate has internal strength, that isn't to be denied, but that doesn't knack external strength.
Pain Train
Watcher (3)
- The closest resemblance to being a big, lumbering meat of a creature is the equivalent of running through anything in power armor, so the Pain Train perk fits best for what Spike is currently. so go with a power armor build, lean HEAVY on it, because that's basically what this character is: A wrecking ball.
Rooted
The Legate (2)
- The Legate knows how to keep his stance and posture on key, letting the enemy come to him to gain the advantage, so the Rooted perk works best, as well as it being a melee-specific perk.
Basher
Watcher (2)
- While Watcher isn't more known for his weapon use and rather his fire breathing and heavy claws, you can apply the basher perk to any big weapon like the Gauss Rifle or the Fat Man as the closest resemblance of a sweeping claw strike. Better yet, just use a Super Sledge and get the same effect!
Strong Back
Watcher (5)
- A giant Dragon is a recipe for opportunities to be one giant carrier vessel. Very little burdens Watcher, so he's keen on helping out Blackjack and/or Littlepip if he can leave his stay, with very little complaint.
Blacksmith
The Legate (4)
- The Legate knows how to make some pretty dope armor for himself and his entourage, donning a very intimidating Deathclaw skull as his trophy and visage to hide who he truly is. On top of that is his seldom used melee weapons, as his own fists (or hooves) are a weapon of destruction.
Iron Fist
The Legate (5)
- Being a master of Fallen Caesar that even Xenith can't beat, The Legate has had 200 years to master it's technique and defeat any opponent hand-to-hand.
PERCEPTION
Watcher (7)
Having a whole slew of hacked spritebots to quietly watch the most moral of those to gather up for his own interests, in spite of Watcher's isolation, he has at least a general idea of everything around them, even if he can't witness every detail personally.
The Legate (6)
While The Legate does have perception in regards to his desires and goals in mind, The Legate is still astutely paranoid of the Stars like the rest of the Zebras are and loathes Blackjack, the 'Maiden of the Stars' as a result of this. Whether this paranoia is propaganda of his own making or he's genuinely afraid, the point of the matter is that The Legate is a bit more daft when it comes to observation outside of his own ego.
Refractor
Watcher (3)
- Being a magical, mythical being with huge, broad scales gives Spike a natural affinity against any sort of plasma or energy based weapons. Seeing that most of the enclave come back scared shitless or turned to ash, most don't try to cross Watcher as a result of how futile their own weapons are against him.
The Legate (2)
- While The Legate is mostly flesh and bone, his weird healing talisman also gives him some natural defense against most ballistic weapons, even though he'd likely dodge them before they would hit.
Awareness
Watcher (2)
- Watcher's little spritebots gives him some preconception of enemies and or friends before they even know who he is, as he can spectate at will at anytime with any particular spritebot.
ENDURANCE
Watcher (6)
While Watcher does have hard scales and a overall large form, Watcher also hasn't been able to get out of a cave that is roughly the same size of him, and has been mostly grounded without having the regiment of working out or dieting beyond eating any gemstones he can scrape.
The Legate (8)
The Legate is hard-boiled, basically immortal, and has a talisman in his skull helmet that also gives him a lot of life regeneration, similarly to Rampage in a way. While it doesn't make him regrow his own mortal coil like Rampage can, he has been a lot to earn the resilience and vigilance of your typical Zebra.
Cannibal
The Legate (2)
- While it may be unconventional for me to put this on here for The Legate, The Legate actually draws life from other people in order to get power for his particular Talisman, which works as some sort of Enervation similar to what lingers in Hoofington. In a roundabout way, he's a 'soul cannibal' by this technicality. Not entirely crazed for food like with Rampage, but nevertheless.
Adamantium Skeleton
The Legate (3)
- The Legate's power talisman gives him a hardier soul and body, and what with his longing age and youthful appearance, The Legate can take a lot of abuse with little recourse.
Rad Resistant
Watcher (2)
- Again, what with being a Dragon, Watcher is naturally resistant to it. Not to mention that Watcher is one of few who actually avoided the radiation spread in the final moments of The Great War, so he is also pure. This also goes in line with you running a Power Armor build, which has natural rad resistance.
Lifegiver
Watcher (3)
- A big, hardy Dragon, even a recluse one, will have a huge lifepool and can take heavy ballistics like they are thumb tacks. Very little can actually even hurt Watcher, which is fortunate given his reluctance to leave.
The Legate (2)
- while The Legate has had a hardy life leading his remnant army, again his talisman does not make him invincible, and there is a certain threshold to what amount of limbs he can lose.
Toughness
Watcher (5)
- Thick skin, heavy scales, large, foreboding body, Watcher is the toughest there can possibly be. His own digestive system can break down fucking gemstones, for crying out loud? How isn't that TOUGH?!
The Legate (2)
- Again, The Legate is exceptionally strong and durable, but he just can't quite compare to being a literal adult grown dragon. And without his talisman, he's a old haggard zebra.
CHARISMA
Watcher (3)
Extremely reclusive, standoffish, and keeping details close to his heart, Watcher typically off puts most he tries to converse with by usually destroying or dismissing his spritebots. Even Littlepip was a bit distraught by the unusual stalking of one near Ponyville.
The Legate (6)
The Legate is considerably more charismatic than Watcher, although only to the discretion of other dissident Zebras who are still burned by the great war in one way or another. His attire is also especially off putting and intimidating to strangers, so he only plays to his base mainly.
Local Leader
The Legate (2)
- The Legate would at least have points in this attribute, if he's been able to lead a fanatical group of remnants still convinced the war is still going on.
Lone Wanderer
Watcher (2)
 - In spite of Watcher's desire to bond the elements of harmony to undo the aftermath of the war, Watcher is so paranoid of anyone knowing of the secret that he is incapable of leaving or trusting anybody to know about it, as a result he's mostly alone in a lonely cave.
Lady Killer
The Legate (2)
- I did mention his intimidating presence, but I guess it sort of turns on some ladies? I mean, Blackjack was fantasizing, albeit briefly, about getting it on with the legate? Then again, she wants to get it on with almost everybody, so that's an aside. maybe there's a charm to being an all powerful badass who's absolutely in control of their own destiny.
Cap Collector
Watcher (3)
- In order to maintain some of the running costs of his secret experiment, he has to do some rudimentary deals with drones and/or couriers in order to get some parts in order, so of course he needs some caps to keep his technology going.
INTELLIGENCE
Watcher (9)
Being stuck in a generator that could promote the rebirth of the entire world of Equestria does tend to lead one to investigate very inscrutably for almost 200 years, and that made Watcher a savant when it comes to tech, small and large. Making it his goal in life to gather the elements of Harmony like he would Celestia in a attempt to repair the damage of The Great War.
The Legate (2)
Absolutely paranoid, schizophrenic, and only ideally interested in tech in pursuit of his own goals, The Legate is the bane to the Brotherhood of Steel in almost every way.
Nuclear Physicist
Watcher (2)
- Watcher nearly masters Nuclear Physicist simultaneously for making fusion cores last longer, and primarily that his fire breath counts as 'radiation damage' in the game, for some reason. It probably helps that Watcher has taken all the precious time to figure out how to make his 'garden of elements' even work.
Robo Expert
Watcher (3)
- It takes some finesse to hack spritebots from a distance in order to communicate to the wasteland, but Watcher managed to do it. His rigging of the machine in his cave also gives him some pointers with programming knowledge.
SCIENCE!
Watcher (3)
- Again, Watcher knows his way around a computer, in spite of his strange shape and size. It also helps that he used to be around someone who had nothing but books for him to read!
Hacker
Watcher (2)
- It's a redundant point, but Watcher knows how to run a computer. At least with the only one he's been able to even work with, considering how big his giant fangs are.
Medic
The Legate (2)
- The only thing with The Legate that even remotely falls on the intelligence is the medic perk, as he and his zebra remnants use rudimentary medicine like herbs and bandages to heal wounds. Not that it would matter to The Legate, what with his natural healing ability.
AGILITY
Watcher (5)
a big, lumbering Dragon isn't going to be the most elegant thing when it comes to stealth or movement. But still, a flying dragon does sport some amount of movement, seeing as Watcher's wingspan can make him fly nearly as fast as most Pegasus Vertibirds.
The Legate (10)
Swift, smooth, quick, and prudent, The Legate is as evasive as he is omnipresent. A master of Fallen Caesar, even Xenith is sweating trying to fight him in unarmed combat and in finesse.
Gun Fu
The Legate (2)
- While this perk would be more fitting with weapons, Gun Fu can also be used as melee as it's a VATS-based perk. The Legate is in tune with his multiple enemies and can track each one with the greatest finesse.
Blitz
The Legate (2)
- Combining well with the Gun Fu perk is the Blitz perk, as it's extremely difficult to keep your distance from The Legate, much less even run away. Even far ranged attackers have trouble avoiding him.
Ninja
The Legate (3)
- From under, over, or from beyond, The Legate strikes without hesitation and without any mercy whatsoever. This goes extremely well with his melee attacks tracking from one to the next, as well as his closing the distance.
Moving Target
The Legate (3)
- The Legate is not intimidated from any sort of firearms or artillery, as he can easily dodge and avoid most of them without even a scruff on his mane.
Action Boy
The Legate & Watcher (3)
- the only perk where both actually match, which is a far cry from the massive perks that The Legate has in comparison to Watcher. Watcher needs the action boy perk to compensate for his flying (AKA Power Armor Jetpack usage), and The Legate to continue his melee onslaught.
Sneak
The Legate (2)
- The Legate usually likes to  make his presence known, but he is keen on sneaking on some enemies, often to cause political division without being caught red-handed.
Commando
Watcher (3)
- Obstensibly, being a power armor user with a jetpack would likely lead you to using more two-handed weapons than most. Seeing that it's the CLOSEST possible way to be a 'dragon', I'd expect Watcher to use both of his claws like a giant maul similarly to it.
LUCK
Watcher (3)
Being withheld the ability to save the Mane Six simply because he was in hibernation must be quite infuriating with Spike, on top of the unofficial responsibility of keeping his cave secret from the Enclave who are constantly searching for him and what he's hiding. As a result, Watcher isn't quite so fortunate to be in his situation, even with his large size and demeanor.
The Legate (8)
With the Legate being handed most of what he got on a silver spoon, while still backstabbing those who cared for him all the while to perpetuate a ongoing war, with a mass of fanatics who blindly follow his beliefs and the idea of the war still going to this day, The Legate is lucky that nobody tried to backstab HIM up to this point. At least, until Lancer came into the picture.
Grim Reaper's Sprint
The Legate (2)
 - The Legate draws power from his enemies and his own allies, and with The Legate's innate melee and unarmed abilities, he's banking on all the best perks of Melee combined with VATS.
Crit Banker
The Legate (3)
- The Legate is a surgeon in that he can calculate every weakness in his enemies, emotional or physical. He'll use it against them, obstensibly giving him the ability to bank on critting someone.
Better Crits
The Legate (2)
- And The Legate doesn't let up on his critical strikes, making them burn and seethe so that he can vanquish his opponents more swiftly.
Bloody Mess
Watcher (4)
- About as subtle as a baseball bat with a grenade swung on someone's head, Watcher, when he does have to fight, will often burn and scorch anything that gets in his way, often accidentally teleporting them as a result of his fire breath being a sort of portal to Celestia's domain.
Scrounger
Watcher (3)
- Vicariously through the spritebots, Watcher accrues a lot of Old-War tech similarly to the Brotherhood of Steel (another reason that they too share a interest in him) in order to help rebuild and get his 'garden of elements' working again as intended.
Whew, that is it! Absolutely it! No more You're SPECIALS as far as I'm concerned, this little mini project has been shelved! Again, new photo run coming by tomorrow on top of me still featuring the one I did nearly a month ago! Hopefully this was worth the wait as always!

Can the Eyes of Judgment Stand up to the Shadow of the Dragon of Dojima?
It can be a difficult thing to come out in the shadow of a larger, more well known sibling. The expectations, implications, and existing familiarity make it hard for the younger sibling to really shine on their own, as people fail to see it as an individual and instead view it as a copy of the thing they’re already familiar with. In this case, Judgment, the newest game from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team responsible for the Yakuza series, has a lot of expectations stacked up against it from the outset. Like Yakuza, it takes place in Kamurocho. Like Yakuza, it uses the Dragon Engine. And like Yakuza, it features a mixture of free roaming action, quest solving, diversions, and a deep, pulpy noir story featuring seedy criminal activities, gang members, murders, and twists and turns.
After 6 mainline games (and quite a few spin-offs and prequels), the Yakuza series has become a well established around the world, with Kazuma Kiryu becoming a recognizable icon in his own right. Needless to say, that leaves Judgment in an odd position: is Yakuza popular because of the gameplay, or is Yakuza popular because of the character of Kazuma Kiryu and other memorable characters like Majima? And is it even fair to compare the two of them, aside from their shared parentage of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and the Dragon Engine? Well, yes and no, so let’s get down to investigating this game on its own before we talk about its comparison to its big brother.
In Judgment, Takayuki Yagami is a former defense lawyer who, after a shocking turn of events, leaves the world of the courtroom to become a private detective. Three years after his change in careers, players assume the role of Yagami, as a series of serial killings targeting yakuza members drags Yagami’s sense of curiosity and justice into the mix. Judgment is set against the criminal justice backdrop of Japan’s modern criminal system, which carries a 99.9% conviction rate; fans of the Phoenix Wright series may be somewhat familiar with this number, as it too carries a lot of significance in the original series’ backdrop of courtroom drama. One of the most popular criminal dramas in Japan is similarly titled 99.9%, and the idea of defense lawyers defying the odds makes for good television by using the real and sometimes confusing statistic of Japan’s conviction rate as a crux. The twist in most fictional portrayals is that this system is unfair, harsh, or even corrupt, where prosecutors will go to any lengths to get the conviction they require.
No matter what, though, this not-quite-dystopian legal system serves as a great backdrop for noir crime drama, and sure enough Judgment takes advantage of that for the type of world it builds around Yagami. As Yagami finds himself going deeper and deeper into the mystery of “The Mole,” he’ll be required to investigate areas, pick locks, tail suspects, fly drones, and fight off unsavory criminals in his quest to uncover who the real murderer is and bring the case to a close, despite the potential danger it involves. Judgment’s strongest overall quality is its story, as the mystery narrative pulls you in and Yagami is an interesting protagonist, surrounded by equally interesting co-stars.
Gameplay in Judgment will likely be familiar to anyone who has played Yakuza, but in general you explore the city of Kamurocho in third person, going from location to location on foot as you search for clues, meet up with people, and as the game progresses, seek down side cases (this game’s version of the sub stories). Yagami’s base is his office, a place that allows you to decorate, recover health, play records you collect, take on jobs, and even play pinball. Of course, there are plenty of other diversions to partake in, such as visiting Club Sega locations to play emulated versions of games like Fighting Vipers, those infamous UFO Catchers, and even a unique twist on House of the Dead called Kamuro of the Dead! Judgment adds drone races to the mix, taking advantage of the fact that Yagami has a drone he uses for investigations, and a VR arcade with a slew of unique games that go beyond simple recreations of arcade games.
You’ll be able to pursue friendships with various NPCs in the game, ranging from people you meet during the story to clerks at your favorite stores, giving Judgment that slight RPG feeling that the Yakuza games have always had. Instead of focusing on your character (which you can upgrade with Skill Points), your major goal in these side events is to raise your city reputation, allowing you to take on more and more side cases as the game progresses. Perhaps even better than Yakuza, these quests make some actual sense for Yagami to engage in; as a private detective, he takes on almost any job, which gives a nice sense of realism to the proceedings.
Of course no matter where Yagami goes, conflict is likely to follow, so it may come as no surprise that the game features quite a bit of combat. Unlike Kiryu or even Majima, Yagami is a relatively slight man, and his combat tends to focus on the fact that he needs speed and agility over brute strength. He has two combat modes that he can switch between, one that serves to help against large groups of enemies, and another that is better suited for one-on-one fights. He also gets a unique wall run set of moves that allow him to use sprinting momentum to launch off walls and attack enemies with various abilities. As he fights, he builds off his EX gauge, which allows you to use various finisher style moves on enemies, and as you level up, even gives you things like ways to attack while downed, or react to various enemy attacks by spending EX meter.
Of all the Yakuza games, I felt that this system reminded me the most of Kiwami 1 and Kiwami 2, but I did find that I have some small issues with Judgment’s combat. Locking on to an enemy by holding the R1 button is a somewhat nebulous act, and can even feel like you aren’t even doing it; but if you don’t, you can’t use dodge moves at all, meaning that the essential requirement of using 2 button presses to dodge becomes awkward. Blocking is done with the L1 button, meaning that you have to be aware that in combat, in order to react to the enemy, you’ll need to be ready to defend with L1, or R1 + X to dodge.
There are some of the weird Dragon Engine flaws that popped up in Kiwami 2 as well, with Yagami occasionally getting caught on scenery, which in one instance caused me to take Mortal Wounds from a boss as I couldn’t escape being stuck on a random decorative item in the area. These were minor in my playthrough, but I had hoped that the developers would maybe have ironed out those janky combat issues by the time Judgment released. One of the interesting changes is that Yagami does not store any weapons (I’m quite sad about this fact), meaning that unless you pick up random items (hello, bicycles!), you’re stuck with your bare fists for all combat situations. I also noticed that the usual collection of random items are available to use in battles, but in some instances of closed locations, like in an office, all of them were quickly destroyed by the ragdoll system, turning arenas like this into big, empty rooms.
Perhaps the biggest thing that sets Judgment apart from Yakuza is the detective aspects. The story of the game is quite interesting, and the way the player is asked to investigate tasks does make it feel like a procedural drama more than a crime drama, which helps in establishing a reason to view this game as its own entity. However, these types of sequences can be somewhat slow. While I took some time to explore the city and engage in some activities as they opened, the first chapter of the game took nearly 6 hours to complete, and proper side cases don’t even become available until the second chapter.
The Yakuza games do have a history of getting progressively bigger, and Judgment has some of that as well. You can likely expect to rack up around 70 hours in this game if you try to do everything like I did, and probably hit 50 hours if you solely focus on the story and do minimal side cases. Speed is not your friend in Judgment, and at times I found the game to be excessively talky, surprised by how much of the game was actually filled with characters talking to one another. In reflection, I would have to say that at least 50%, if not more, of the 6 hours I played of Chapter 1 was all talking.
Judgment is by far a more narrative game than its siblings, and while many of them had long and developed plotlines, Judgment puts heavy focus on narrative over everything else, which is not as negative as it sounds. Instead, you are given a very good sense of who these characters are, what’s happening, and why you should care about them. I found Yagami to be a particularly refreshing protagonist when compared to Kiryu and Majima; Yagami is a man who tried to play it straight and do his best as a lawyer, only to have that dream destroyed, with the past constantly haunting him. When compared to Kiryu, Yagami feels far more complex, a cynical and wry man whose dreams and ideas of the world have been shattered,  but who still has a strong sense of justice burning under that cynicism. It would be fair to say that he’s almost far less charismatic than Kiryu as well, and comes off as almost unlikeable in certain instances; this isn’t a man fighting by any supposed code of honor, but instead a man trying to find purpose after the events he continues to blame himself for.
Yagami’s character depth is perhaps the strongest element of Judgment, and the reason that I enjoyed it despite some of my initial misgivings about how plot heavy it really is. While some of the investigation missions get tiring (the tailing missions especially), I constantly wanted to find out what was going to happen next. Judgment succeeds on the one part it really needed to land: the noir crime mystery story it tells. Yagami’s search for the truth, if not redemption, is fleshed out over the chapters of this game perfectly. If you’re a fan of mysteries or crime procedurals, there is a lot to love in Judgment, and the game even features difficulty options that allow you to focus solely on the narrative, a feature I really appreciated in retrospect after playing the game. While I enjoy the challenge of the Yakuza games, I think the fact that people who just want to experience Judgment’s story will get that option, as the easier difficulty options also affect some of the minigames like picking locks.
Comparing this game to Yakuza is pretty obvious, but a lot of the time I spent with Judgment made me think of the time I’ve spent with the Phoenix Wright games or L.A. Noire as well, and I appreciate that the developers tried to accommodate as many people as possible with these options. Yagami himself does a lot of the heavy lifting here too, as he’s a deeply flawed character who punishes himself far more than he needs to, leading him to make relatively obvious mistakes in judgment; perhaps one of the best aspects of a good noir crime story is a flawed protagonist seeking something, and Yagami really fulfills that role completely, perhaps even better than Cole, the protagonist of L.A. Noire. The game itself is fairly lax when it comes to choices, too, as it will generally steer you into the right answer, and there were never really any options that would take you down the wrong path or affect the story outcome. You’re more along for the ride here than you are making the decisions for where the story goes, which for the sake of how these games generally play, I found totally fine.
Those who know me are aware that I’m into Yakuza BIG TIME. After my partner talked me into playing Yakuza 0 when it was released on the PS4, I completely fell in love with the series. I’m currently on a long quest to play and stream all of the Yakuza games (I’m on Yakuza 3 at the moment), and it’s been a hell of a journey. The story, the drama, the characters, and my goodness, the ACTION! It was all wrapped in a perfect package that was a true joy to unwrap. I have to admit that when I first started playing Judgment, I was still thinking that I was going to play yet another Yakuza game, and when it wasn’t, it caught me off-guard. And that’s okay, because Judgment is its own thing in its own style; the game, despite also being set in Kamurocho, has plenty of unique appeal to it along with its charming cast of characters, like Kaito. I found myself getting more and more absorbed into the story and characters that the game had to offer.
When it comes to reviewing Judgment, I think there are two main questions to answer. The first is: “Does it stand up against the shadow of Kazuma Kiryu and the Yakuza games?”, which I believe yes, it does. You’ll find enough to enjoy here if you love those games, despite the narrative differences, but players who have never tried Yakuza at all should find this a great way to perhaps give the genre a chance without having to worry about all the baggage. The second question is: “Does this game succeed on its own as a crime noir mystery game?”, to which my answer is… mostly. The game is generally solid in this regard, with a great story and unique characters, but at times the game just takes far too long to get to the meat of the story. The pacing either needed to be faster, or the story more directly told, instead of wandering around Kamurocho back and forth between ever changing destinations.
That said, I think Judgment is a fantastic game that fans of Yakuza, Phoenix Wright, or crime dramas will enjoy. It may not have the history of its older sibling, and Yagami is certainly no Kiryu, but he is his own person, with his own cast of characters and stories to tell. And personally I’d love to see a second game in the series take us on even more adventures with Yagami solving mysteries, flying drones, and taking pictures of random stray cats, and I think you will too after playing through Judgment!
REVIEW ROUNDUP
+ Builds on the Yakuza franchise to establish its own flavor of story and characters.
+ Yagami is a unique and interesting protagonist that really carries the game on his back.
+ Variable difficulty lets players of any level enjoy the fantastic noir story here.
+/- Game can be slow and occasionally devolves into running back and forth on the map.
+/- While there is plenty of fun stuff to do, some of it just isn’t very interesting to do after a while.
- There are some frankly tired depictions of sexual harassment that women deal with here that seem to serve little purpose in the game other than being used for comic relief or to establish that bad people are bad.
Is this your first trip to Kamurocho, or are you a die-hard Yakuza fan? What’s your favorite part of Judgment? Let us know what you think of the game in the comments!

It's been a good week for fans of smartphone gaming, not only because technology and games are constantly improving, but also because some of the biggest names in the mobile gaming industry are continuing to produce new experiences. We've recently learned of a new mobile title from Wonderland Kazakiri that aims to give players a way to design, play, and share their own unique dungeons. It's called Block Quest Maker, and it's available now for iOS and Android devices.

Another title that's soon to arrive on the mobile scene is Tactical Monsters, a blend of hex-based strategy RPG gameplay with both solo and online gameplay modes. Even better, the game has a few unique iOS-exclusive features, including a special new mode that makes use of Apple's potent ARKit framework. Beyond that, mobile players have just been treated to Onmyoji, a new RPG designed for smartphones that draws its inspiration from traditional Japanese mythology.
We couldn't go without mentioning Pokemon Go, of course, and there's always fresh news on that front. This week Pokemon Go players are being treated to a new Community Event that will offer the chance to nab a Dratini; in addition, even more Generation 3 Pokemon have been added to the game, so players should start seeing Hoenn-region creatures start popping up around them. And in the chance that getting out into the real world just doesn't sound exciting, Pokemon fans can also load up Amazon's new subscription-based Pokemon Channel, the likes of which are dedicated to the series' animated adventures.
Moving and Shaking
Some of the news we've received this week regards video game industry talent finding new homes. Famed developer Yuji Naka of Sonic the Hedgehog fame has revealed that he's now working for Square Enix, which is just fine by us; in addition, Downwell developer Ojiro Fumoto has found himself a home at none other than Nintendo, a place where his talents are sure to shine.

It's of little surprise that the Switch has received plenty of fresh updates, this time around being some potential or upcoming games to the system. We've learned that the crew behind recent RollerCoaster Tycoon games is taking to crowdfunding in order to develop a Switch-focused title in the series; similarly, Rain World developer Videocult has poked into the public sphere in order to gauge interest in bringing Rain World to the Nintendo Switch. And even though the grim RPG Darkest Dungeon has already arrived on the system via digital downloads, Red Hook has teamed up with Merge Games to bring physical copies of Darkest Dungeon to store shelves.
In sadder news, Nintendo has announced that there are no plans in place to bring any more content updates to the motion-enhanced brawler Arms. Fortunately, Nintendo fans can now wash away their woes with Second Self Beer Company's Zelda-inspired Triforce IPA. Fans can also now check out the latest adventures of the pink puffball, as we've got an all-new review for Kirby Battle Royale for the Nintendo 3DS. And if that doesn't do it, at least Switch owners can look forward to Hello Kitty Kruisers, a very cutesy kart racer that seems to take a few design inspirations from games like Diddy Kong Racing.
