"waaa waaa israelis are getting killed" okay??? and??? palestinians have been getting massacred for almost 80 years non stop. i was three years old when an israeli soldier held a gun to my face. i don't care that a few colonial settlers (that are ILLEGALLY settled there btw. according to international law) are dead.
hey answer this for me- why are the settlers and civilians the first people who get hurt? why? you wanna know why? because israel does it on purpose. it's all systematically set up. israel systematically puts settlements with israeli people who are not soldiers RIGHT next to the palestinians, so if anything happens, the settlers will be the first ones to die, and israel and america can immediately put the blame and demonize palestinians even more. israel is doing this ON PURPOSE. israel doesn't care for it's people. they kill them off whenever it's convenient. they will do everything in their power, including allowing their own people to be killed, in order to make palestinians look less than human.
stop falling for propaganda. stop listening to the western media. listen to the palestinian voices. listen to indiginous voices. listen to the opressed. we need help, and we need all of you to support us. from the river to the sea 🇵🇸

I am unsure how to speak about Palestine. People keep telling me they fired first and my google searches are very bad
Hey, glad you sent in this ask! People who claim that Palestine initiated the firing view October 7th as an isolated event, when we cannot treat it as such. Oct 7 comes as a response to a 75 year colonization. Just like Hamas was founded in 1987 during the First Intifada- a series of civilian protests, where Palestinians threw stones at soldiers, and were met by a disproportionate and liberal use of force as described by a Humans Rights Watch report.
How could Palestine fire first when Hamas was created in direct response to the displacement and colonization that Palestinians faced? Hamas wouldn't have existed if Israel didn't murder, unlawfully imprison, torture and displace Palestinians. Oct 7 wasn't an isolate incident, every action implicates a reaction and every occupation leads to a resistance.
The west claims that Israel has a right to defend itself, leading in two months alone to the mass and brutal murder of 16.000+ civilians. But Palestine cannot defend itself against its colonizers (Just like Ukraine has done for example against Russia, a resistance backed by the American and European powers alike?)
I urge you to read about all the massacres Israel committed against Palestinians prior to Oct 7, so you'd understand better that Palestine did not fire first. Israel did not even exist prior to 1948 for Palestine to attack it.
And, let's be honest for a second. If someone comes into your home, forces you out of it, destroys it, murders everyone you know, denies you of your most basic rights, unlawfully imprisons you, tortures you physically and psychologically, destroys your land and hinders your agriculture and destroys your libraries and erases your culture, would you not resist? Would you stay silent? Of course not, and Palestinians shouldn't be dehumanized and killed for it.
Now for your second point, I'm glad you brought that up because western media is very very biased. To give you some examples, here is a Washington Post headline about four premature babies that died, decomposing on their hospital beds in Al-Nasr Hospital, in northern Gaza. They were left in the prenatal care after Israel threatened doctors to bomb the hospital if they didn't evacuate it.
"Four fragiles lives found ended"
Tumblr media
Who ended them? Why were they in that situation to begin with? Who was behind their tragic murder? The journalist behind this post deliberately chose this title to avoid pointing the blame to Israel. In fact, the entire article doesn't directly nor clearly state the reason behind this slow and torturous death. When those four babies would not have died IF Israel didn't threaten to bomb their hospital, forcing everyone to evacuate.
We as journalists learn that the 5Ws are the essential key elements that form the basis of any article : who? where? when? what? how/why? Israel should be clearly denounced as the one responsible of those deaths, especially considering that it's a war crime underneath the Geneva convention.
Let's take another example. Pay attention to elusive langage and the way media skirts around words, using euphemisms to redirect the blame. Palestinians "die"- as if passing away due to natural causes, as if there wasn't a clear intent to murder them. Whereas Israelis are "killed"- deliberately targeted. This double standard already shows you that the media you're reading from is heavily biased.
Tumblr media
We journalists also learn that headlines are very very important, especially on social media where most people get their information strictly by reading the headlines and sharing it, without bothering to check the entirety of the article. Now, here's an example of a misleading headline by BBC.
Tumblr media
At first read this looks like confirmed accounts of rape. Anyone who reads it would think that it has been proven irrevocably, but let's look more into the article :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
None of the rape accusations were verified, neither by the police or the journalists of BBC. All of these are alleged claims that have no tangible backing, and yet they were presented as factual in the headline, the most important part of any article that catches the attention of readers. By formulating the headline as such, BBC pre-establishes the premise that Hamas did rape women and that it has been proven. This is the information that most people would retain as they wouldn't bother reading the article. This is how propaganda starts and how false news are shared widely (remember the story of the 40 beheaded babies debunked by the IDF itself?)
Always look out for the langage and terminology the media uses. It is not coincidental, it is deliberate and it serves the interests/editorial line of the media. And you can speak up about Palestine by denouncing the genocide they're facing. If you can read about 16.000+ deaths, most of which are children, if you can see images of hospitals, refugee camps, schools, ambulances, houses, "safe routes" bombed by Israel and still be unsure of your stance, then i don't know what to tell you.

Hi, hey, hello! I just wanted to say I saw your Basic Horse Info post and it made me SO happy. I've been riding since I was 2 (English, competitive hunter/jumper) and spent three years working alongside an equine vet. I always get so bothered when people handle horses incorrectly in media. I just wanted to shoot you a message and say thanks for taking the time to do that, and that it's super hella rad that you have barrel racing experience! I have ridden western a tiny bit myself, but nothing close to the skill it takes to run barrels. I'd love to get back into riding on my own terms someday (money pending) and dig more into that discipline. The agility on the flat is super cool to me! I am always down to talk shop about horses and riding and all that, so if you ever want a horsey chat pal, I'd love to be that person! Anyway have a wonderful day!
Thanks for reaching out! I seriously envy your ability to handle English riding rofl, I would always end up slipping off the saddle or just freaking out in general because I didn't feel like there was enough under my butt to keep me stable with English tack! Plus, I just... suck at dressage. I tried a little dressage, and my riding instructor would literally bow her head and pinch between her eyes at how terrible my posture was, how bad I was at remembering where to turn my head, etc.
I choose to blame learning to ride in my early teens rather than a very young age. Or just being a big baby, which is just as likely. My mom, who's worked with horses since she was a child, wanted to raise me in the saddle, but our finances never really worked out to where we could pull that off.
The funny thing is that I only got into barrel racing because it was the sport that my instructing horse practiced before his owner retired him from competing and trained him as a teaching horse. Once my ass was sitting on Western style tack, things kinda just clicked for me, and after a few months my teacher was running out of stuff for me to learn from the "general riding" category and busted out her old set of barrels one day just to give me something more to do! She didn't actually mean to get me hooked on it, but I don't think she should've ever blamed herself. I blame my horse, Chip, for getting me into barrel racing.
He was a sour old grump (he was about 14 when I started learning; your classic chestnut and white painted Quarterhorse), healthy, but had to retire from racing after he'd badly strained one of the tendons in his back legs and the vet warned he'd probably tear it if he had to keep competing seriously. He could still run the barrels from time to time for fun, but continuing to professionally compete would've lamed him permanently. He generally had the demeanor of a bitter athlete forced to retire before his career could really take off, and kind of... forgot he was supposed to be going easy on me when he saw the barrels. I had only just barely begun learning the rhythm for galloping and was still very, very nervous about it (I wasn't even that good at switching leads yet), but Chip did NOT care, took off at the barrels, and I suddenly found myself at a full gallop on his back, wide-eyed, and flying around those barrels.
After that? I couldn't stop barrel racing. My instructor started making the barrels a regular part of my riding instructions. That feeling of flying around those breakneck turns - the freedom and feeling of the gods of Life and Death flipping a coin on your odds of survival at the same time - woke something up in me, and I was racing casually with him and getting ready to try competition riding on a new horse when I started developing problems with my gallbladder that took me out of the saddle for good :( That's when I discovered a love for working as a stable hand, since it kept me with the horses and at the barn.
However, about 6 years ago, I had my gallbladder removed, my health has been getting better, and I now live in an area rife with horse ranches. The closest store to my house is literally a tack and garden supply shop. My doctor has been nudging me to get more exercise, and I'm really beginning to miss the smell of alfalfa flakes...
Feel free to visit my DMs/askbox again! I love reading the tags on that post and seeing other horse stories in the comments and tags, so it's awesome to hear from people directly about them :)

Hey there! I'd love to get your thoughts on something. I saw a promo this morning on NBC for Jungkook’s upcoming Today show performance, and the language has been on my mind all day. He was described as: “The breakout star of BTS!”
When he appeared on Good Morning America and the Global Citizens Festival just a few months ago, they called him, “BTS’s Jungkook” or “From BTS, Jungkook.” I feel like there’s a lot of mileage between these designations and hyping him as “the breakout star of BTS.”
Why? Because American culture glorifies individual success. Whether it’s in business or sports or entertainment or politics, we give lip service to the notion of teamwork, but real adulation is for the people we can label mavericks, trailblazers, or…breakout stars. Within this mindset, there’s very little room left over to admire group achievement. The pinnacle of superstardom is reserved for those who are exceptional enough to stand out *from* the group, not be part of it.
So, I’m rewinding to a few months ago to imagine what my all-American Muggle-mind would have made of a promotion for “the breakout star of BTS.” To be honest, I would’ve assumed that one of BTS’s members had left the group because he had surpassed them. There are potentially millions of non-ARMY American customers, like that Muggle-me, to whom Jungkook could be marketed as *the* star---singular---who broke out of that boy-band.
Now, I’m in no way suggesting that Jungkook himself believes this. I have a lot of faith in him, in the dedication he has to the members and their work as a group, and in the sheer power of BTS when they are all together. I'm sure their comeback in 2025 will be astonishing (to quote Suga on Suchwita, “we’ll devour the world.”).
But that’s two years away, and I can feel this narrative building (in the U.S., at least) that Jungkook is the *real* star, and BTS? Well, that’s just part of his past. I hope I’m wrong about that, because as much as I think Jungkook deserves his own success, I don't really want to see BTS getting demoted in the popular imagination to "the band that launched Jungkook."
What do you think? Am I cynically jumping the gun? Overreacting? Talking out of my ass?
--A Muggle
Hi! So nice to hear from you again!!
Americans are so consistent. "The next BTS", "The breakout star in BTS" blah blah. Of course, from their perspective, Jungkook is clearly the breakout star. But that's because he's targeting their market and making pop music. They don't get that the other members are interested in exploring other genres or even other markets. The most famous member in the US is the "breakout" member, nevermind that the others are successful in their respective fields as well. In their mind there has to be a breakout star, and I can't blame them entirely because that is how we all think. We assume that lesser famous artists are unsuccessful, when they might actually be successful in a different market. And in the case of some groups that disband, some members simply don't want fame anymore, yet the member who goes down the pop route and is successful is seen as the only successful one, like the others failed to make it.
And you're right that after Seven there could be a small shift from "the famous maknae from BTS" to "the member that is outdoing BTS" - though that's not true. What you said about America is true. Solo pop stars are much more marketable and respected. Jungkook being a boy group member actually doesn't do him any favors in the sense that, to someone who doesn't know BTS, the boy group label isn't an appealing one.
I agree that people who aren't aware of how massive BTS are might consider him somehow above BTS, because being a breakout star does imply, well, breaking out of the group, but Western media do know BTS. They know the group is huge, that the fans are insanely powerful and those fans are very vocal about loving the other members too. So far Jungkook's success seems to be taken as an extension of BTS's, as proof of BTS's strength, which it is. There isn't a single interview, including the recent one with Jimmy Fallon, in which BTS aren't mentioned, because BTS is bigger and mentioning BTS makes Armys happy and creates engagement. In fact, sometimes they mention BTS too much, but now that Jungkook is sort of standing on his own two feet, there is less of a focus on the group.
Anyway, Jungkook will enlist soon so I don't think there will even be enough time for him to establish himself and build that kind of reputation to separate him from BTS. Jungkook introduces himself as Jungkook of BTS and his fans are Army - as in, BTS's Army - so, in my opinion, what you're saying won't happen. You might see an article or two about it, but people know Jungkook's power and fandom are also BTS's power and fandom. I can't even imagine a scenario in which BTS and just "that band Jungkook is from". At least in kpop it didn't happen with Big Bang, Girls Generation, SHINee, 2EN1, or other groups with famous soloists, and the US might be different, but The Beatles are still The fucking Beatles and not that band that launched John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and One Direction, despite Harry Styles's success and being kind of disbanded, still has a strong group fandom.
So, yeah, BTS are solid imo. Jungkook would need a real solo career, with multiple comebacks and bigger promotion, to be any kind of "threat" to BTS's image. But I can't promise you won't see a few tasteless articles about it.
I'm not great at predicting popular opinion and what the media will do, though, so my opinion may not amount to much.
Thanks for the ask!! Stay in touch, ok?

What that person said abt the jjk fandom being misaimed is what basically most western (to my knowledge) shonen fandoms are like.
They don't want to put any effort into actually understanding the themes or tone of the story bc hey, it's shonen, why would they, right?
And then when they can't predict or put their expectations so high up that when the manga doesn't reach it, then it must be someone else's failure.
Yep. I mentioned it before when I talked about BNHA and Western viewers, but as a Westerner, that's something that irritates me from time to time.
I don't know about anybody else, but if I don't understand a theme or tone or anything from a media that comes somewhere else, I don't blame it on the creator. Different cultures here! I try to read up on what I can to understand, you know?
I like learning and even if I still don't get it, I'm not gonna act as if it's ruining my life.
At the end of the day, JJK like anything else I watch and read is just entertainment to me. It's a story I can enjoy whenever I have the time to.
Is anyone being forced to understand the themes? No and I think that's what some people don't get.
You don't have to immediately go into reading up on another's culture if you don't want to to understand an anime. No one is forcing you.
It's acting as if you're entitled as if everything has to be catered to just your tastes where it's just too much.
Example, I like horror. But not every horror is going to appeal to me. It's not the worse thing in the world though because there is horror that does appeal to me. If I don't like something, I skip it and call it a day. I don't mope and whine and blame the creator every day in and day out on some thread.
I have better things to do. I rather not get stuck on something I hate.
I'm just so over those who think every single anime, manga, movie, show, and other media should cater to them. 🙄

Fwd: Saturday morning .....our 9/11 8.10.2023
For those who are not on whatsapp    this is what I wrote yesterday during the day. Today my head feels like a bunch of fluff and I have not written again. Maybe tomorrow. Even after the other wars I never felt like this. We were even less prepared than before the Yom Kippur war. See the article at the end which says everything I want to say. Except that I would like to see Netanahu and his blonde bitch end up like Mussoliin.
Saturday morning........or was it somewhere in the far past.
And thank you to those of my family and friends who took the trouble to lift a phone and speak to me,South Africa, America, Australia, England.
I slept late as I have been so tired lately. I _ got up later than usual  thinking to write and then to go for a walk. I put on the radio and thought that it was a replay of part  when suddenly the sirens started. I don't know what time it happened. I thought I would go and  walk before sitting down when the sirens went off. I thought I heard booming and neighbours have said it is so. We are told not to go to the shelter which is in any case only enough for a few people. To open windows. I would phone Irene although we have not spoken in years but it is shabbat. I am still trying to decide what is happening. The government says we are in a state of war
"  A report: picture of the very difficult situation is becoming clearer, and the media still haven't published what is happening on the ground. I can say with certainty that the current government is guilty of the biggest failure in the history of the State of Israel. Yes, bigger than the Yom Kippur War.
The government chose to neglect everything that was done in the country and to concern itself only with itself, its base and transferring budgets to the ultra-Orthodox and the settlements.
It is impossible to understand it at all, and I wrote about it here before, that 65% of the IDF's special forces are in the territories!!
This means that the IDF can never really prepare for a war plan, because it is busy with policing and protecting settlers and settlements.
Only in the last few days 5 battalions secured prayers and rioting settlers. About two weeks ago, three battalions secured a mass night prayer at Rachel's Tomb. Because that's what matters.
Three more battalions on the border with Gaza and this whole horrific event would not have happened at all.
There will be real and very painful disillusionment here after the 7/10 default. The situation will have to look different. What I wrote:
They blamed Golda for Yom Kippur.   This is worse. Hey Netanyahu and Gallant where were you.  Why has our unesteemed  pm not spoken.  And now my eyes are wet.  A woman who is alone with her children and terrorists are trying to get into her house and she is begging for help in a whisper and crying.  Where is this wonderful government.  Where is the army.  It should be the settlements which are under attack.  They have brought us to this.  People have been kidnapped.  Many wounded. A woman from a kibbutz crying saying that her husband is outside fighting.  The children are crying.   Where are all the brave settlers who yesterday sat in the middle of Hawara holding a Torah lesson and protected by the soldiers. I wonder if Netanyahu’s sons will come back to help fight.   And I wonder if he and his blond bitch are in the country or on holiday somewhere.  Suddenly Ben gvir has disappeared and his fascists
Another siren. I spoke to Devora.  Irene’s daughter. Beit Shemesh is under rocket attack.  Now western jerusalem.  The largest bang now   Much neater
Netanyahu speaks but not directly.  A recorded speech.  Boom after boom
-A woman in tears from beeri who says she saw her father being taken to Gaza as hostage.  Her father wrote he was being taken.  That ths terrorists were in the house.   She has not heard from her mother and grandmother-
500 wounded.  22 dead.  News says many more.  People say that they have seen friends and relations captive in Gaza.  No politician is talking.   Not a word about this from Netanyahu and his cabinet.  We are not being told the truth. On the tv we are told that we are not being shown pictures of what is happening as they are too terrible. People are seeing their children captive in Gaza . The closest we come to the truth is the television
Hadassah has never known a situation as this even in the wars.  Private cars are bringing in the wounded.  Our soldiers have hardly any training in dealing with this.  When they should have been trained they were too busy helping and guarding settlers. Horrible watching Al Jazeera. I opened for the first time and saw an Israeli captive.  Probably the TV here does not want to show us
40 dead.  Why are we not told the truth? Why do we not see the pictures from CNN on out tv.  Is the government so stupid we do not see on foreign media?
It is so awful to see the posts of people who are looking for missing families. My heart trembles when I think of the young women who have been captured . May this government go down in history as those responsible for the tragedy we are experiencing. I loathe those who can dance with joy because of a holiday which has become a tragedy.  This is a time for shiva for many families.  Now they say 40 and 700 wounded.  Because we saw this on foreign networks.  And today when we finish sitting in the succah think of those Palestinians who no longer have a home.  Why is the South suffering and not the settlers
Mashgav: Haaretz: Long hours into the October 2023 attack, the Israelis continued to ask: Where is the IDF? The answer: in the West Bank, or at home. Almost all regular force battalions are invested in policing and maintaining the occupation and settlement enterprise. One of them was directly employed in securing a prayer and a Torah lesson on Hawara's main street. The enemy In his wisdom, he again chose to surprise on a holiday and Shabbat, and found himself invading an unprotected and unmanned space, with kibbutzim, moshavim and development towns on the standard of the bastion line of '73. With two or three other infantry battalions on combat alert in the Gaza Strip at the place of Yosef's tomb and Rachel's tomb, Everything would look different. The opening blow caught Israel, its army and its intelligence organizations unprepared and dysfunctional. The blood price is horribly high, the psychological effect is dramatic. The feeling that many Israelis have had in recent months, according to which the country is simply being destroyed and collapsing before their eyes, has received a sharp and tangible expression like no other. The historical timing of course resonates, and was carefully chosen. This is the greatest humiliation inflicted on Israel by its enemies since the Yom Kippur War, and to a large extent it is even more painful. Fifty years ago, the regular armies of Egypt and Syria, armed and trained by a world power, prohibited war on it; In October 2023, terrorists with jeans, guns and phones rushed into its breached border. In doing so, they inflicted on their unfortunate people in Gaza a heavy disaster, the dimensions of which will become clear only in the coming days and weeks, but it can already be stated that they succeeded in fundamentally undermining the divided and exhausted Israeli society. The occupation and its maintenance diverted the IDF, the Shin Bet and the Border Guard from their original mission. The right-wing governments led by Netanyahu have steadily weakened Israel and its systems, while investing huge resources in ultra-Orthodox and settlers who do not contribute to the security of the state and often even harm it. The writing was already on the wall in a one-off incident of systemic failure such as the Miron disaster, for which Prime Minister Netanyahu and Police Minister Ohana, along with their ultra-Orthodox accomplices, of course escaped responsibility. It is not known at this stage how the current tragedy will end, but one thing has already been made clear: the concept of burying the Palestinian elephant in Gaza and the West Bank ("managing the conflict", "a piece in the butt") in favor of normalization arrangements with the oil principalities of the Gulf went bankrupt with a huge noise.

Can you please explain to me where do you get all those crazy ideas? Also do you know that medals taken away in 2014 are still getting returned to a lot of athletes? After 8 years this circus is still on. I don’t see this being covered in the media, but I speak Russian and see a completely different thing. If some other country had Eteri and those medals would be theirs, nothing of this would have happened. This is sickening!
horribly untrue lol:
1) the crazy ideas are from international news channels (BBC, NBC, CNN etc etc) from an official statement by the ITA the WADA. Get your ass off sports.ru, goldenskate and TASS and maybe learn to actually watch the news and you can also get these correct crazy ideas 💞
no medals being taken away from athletes competing in sochi 2014 have been returned because they were literally exposed for state-sponsored doping
the reason they haven't been competing as russia in these past three olympics is because of that, because they're fucking notorious for doping, because they get warning after warning and they're still caught doping
"not being covered in the media" this has become a topic of conversation in countries where most people don't even know about figure skating, that's the amount of media coverage this is getting
you see a completely different thing because thats what russia wants you to see, their state-sponsored state run news channels and their propaganda
if this happened to any other athlete or country, they would already be banned and suspended, RUSFED and ROC have some nerve, its illegal for kamila to be on olympic ice rn while an investigation is being conducted, yet she's there practicing like nothing's happening, thats how much leeway the ROC is getting, even when they're banned for doping and they've been caught doing that again
and yes it is sickening, its sickening that there are skaters who are being denied their rightful team medal just because the playing ground is never level, because a country that refuses to ever play fair, the country that's doping children. it's sickening that so many athletes have been denied their rightful podium places, their medals and recognition because of athletes with an unfair advantage. all athletes who are now injured trying to chase unrealistic unattainable standards to have a chance to compete with the russians. its fucking sickening
y'all need to realize that every time russia gets caught cheating, its not western propaganda, its that they refuse to stop it. got banned from the olympics? make the doping smarter, timed more efficiently, get new drugs instead of the old ones, and if you're not allowed to participate, send a crying 17 year old to an IOC conference asking for them to not deny her her dream of performing at the olympics. this is happening again and again anf agains because the IOC refuses to take action against Russia, they dont give a fuck if they don't get their flag or anthem, what they care about is their medals, and if that means dopo to children then so be it.
if the ioc allows them to get away with this its just sending a signal to others thats screaming "hey dope ur kids we cant do shit because they're minors, they'll be allowed to participate while having an unfair advantage over other athletes" BUT that only happens when you're russian, any other country gets banned on the mere suspicion of doping so there's literally no way you can win if you're not russian🥰 so much for fair sport
i know a lot of the russian people dont support this, more than the country the people should be blamed, the people in charge of all this, of ruining literally uncountable lives
if the ioc wants to force change they need to get stricter even if there are russian athletes that are clean, dont let them participate, stop with the fucking neutral flag it ain't doing shit, and they won't stop unless they're literally not allowed to participate at this point

Hey. As some of you may know - I’m from Ukraine. From Kyiv. I know I haven’t been on Tumblr for years, but I would like to share this here as well. The post will be long and it will contain about 1% of what I would like to say.
On 24.02.2022 at 4:40 AM I have woken up unexpectedly after the restless sleep. I’ve been anxious for weeks now, our whole country was, with the continuous reports about the russian imminent attack. The first thing that I did was checking my phone for news. I’ve started following russian telegram channels to track the shit that was happening there as well, to be prepared, to have some glimpse into what’s going on there as well. And here he was, hitler 2.0 himself declaring a war with Ukraine. The spineless shit didn’t even have the dignity to call it a war, it was just a special military operation, to “free us from our nazi regime and demilitarise our country”. I couldn’t breathe. After that countless messages started popping up in the other chats about explosions in Odessa, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv. Basically all over our country. You cannot imagine the horror, I thought I was going to be physically sick, I felt my body going completely numb. I’ve tried to wake my boyfriend, told him the war has started, but he was half asleep telling me to go back to sleep because we need to go to work tomorrow. I’ve called my mother, my father, they couldn’t believe it as well. For 20 minutes I wasn’t sure the war has actually started and it wasn’t another russian trick to spread the panic among us. I’ve checked our official news channels on social media, turned on our TV, but there was nothing there, everyone was asleep. Just like hitler - putin has started his war early in the morning.
A few people believed this would actually happen, even though the countless facts stated otherwise. If you didn’t know we’ve been at war with russia since 2014, after they have annexed Crimea and tried to occupy Donbas region, installing their puppet regime there, supplying them with weapons all these years. Shooting and bombing their own positions and civilians to try and blame it on Ukraine. With countless russians closing their eyes, saying they are above politics and with even more russians celebrating the Crimea annexation. Only few of them had the dignity to actually call the things for what they were, the rest were acting just like their fascist leader.
I understand it’s easier for some of you to live in a simple world where putin is solely responsible for this war. It’s easier to live with the thought that one person is the embodiment of all that is evil, not millions of people. But it’s not putin who drops the bombs on Ukrainian cities, not putin shoots defenceless families trying to evacuate, not putin bombs animal shelters, not putin forms fucking Zs all over the fucking russia, often times using the children for this, even with the dying ones in their hospices. Hundreds of thousands of people were at their rally today, praising russia, their killer soldiers and putin himself. Did you than more than 70% of russians support putin’s invasion? Did you know that poor-poor russians living in the "rotten western countries", are harassing the refugees in Europe right now, specifically in Germany, Moldova and Estonia? People who had to leave their homes, their families, their loved ones? Fleeing without nothing, sometimes without even shoes?
To understand the hate first you need to understand how sick their society is. We all know how horrible stalin was, killing millions of people, sending more to the concentration camps. But did you know that there were more than 5 millions denunciations made by "regular russians" during his reign? Betraying their own neighbours, sometimes even families, sending them to their deaths? Was Stalin solely responsible for that? Fuck no.
We are dealing with incomprehensible danger here - just look at these insane pictures. Would you be telling jewish people during WW2 to stop hating on Germany? With thousands being massacred right now in my country, millions in the grave danger, it’s simply heartbreaking to see anyone trying to divert attention from that and to protect the poor russian victims. This is beyond ridiculous.
We are eternally grateful for the World’s support and I’m moved beyond my words daily! Just please don’t help spreading kremlin’s agenda trying to humanise the literal fascists destroying my country right now, trying to erase us from the face of the Earth. These people have been trying to steal Ukraine’s history, language, culture, identity and freedom for centuries! Believe me, I’ve been dealing with this my whole life. They are ruthless aggressors who have been harassing our peaceful country for as long as we can remember! If you don’t believe me ask the people of Poland, Finland, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Chechnya, Georgia, Syria and many more. Ask them how they feel about russians.
Russians complaining about hurtful comments on the internet and IKEA or McDonalds closing down? In less than a month of this escalation they have killed thousands of my brothers and sisters, hundreds of kids, more than 6.5 million people had to move across Ukraine to safer places, 3.2 millions had to leave the country (including myself), millions are separated from their loved ones, thousands of residential buildings destroyed, our infrastructure, our schools, our hospitals, our churches, our heritage. And they are silent, even those who do not support this war. There are more than 140 millions of them and only thousands protested. So please don’t tell us we cannot be mad at russians for all the horrors we are going through right now. Their taxes sponsor the rockets falling down on our children this very moment.

Hi aunty! I was thinking about society seeing Greek gods and sort of Egyptian gods as the “mainstream” gods or only gods or default gods and how it became that way? I’m thinking it is because Ancient Greece and ancient Egypt are such important parts of history and helped get modern society to what it is and are studied more in Academia so they just became more talked about? What do you think?
Hey! Seems to me it's because Western Europe and the US give too much attention to ancient Greece and ancient Egypt (as if these civilizations didn't have 2000 years of development and amazing historical feats and discoveries :p). Ancient Egypt became famous when N. Europeans and some N. Americans got excited by the science of archeology and they had the influence to spread the news about discoveries there. And, truth be told, the discoveries were many and that ignited more interest.
The countries that have the biggest reach in the West (and beyond sometimes) happen to be interested in these periods and talk more about them in their societies and media, and these periods slowly gained the interest of elitists.
And I start this way because "the society" you mention is probably some country in the West (could also be Greece because we get interested in whatever the powerful countries like, ignoring even great instances of our recent past for the sake of the Peloponnesian war or something).
This interest is not condemnable by any means, but I want to dismantle the myth that the "mainstream" comes solely from how "valuable" these periods are. This value is actually decided by the biggest influencer on this side of the world. Imperialism, colonization, you know the drill.
There's also an exotisation/orientalist element to it all. While I can't blame people for gravitating towards what is new to them, I'd like people to be aware of how these sentiments played a role in the popularity of these eras, and (later) how they've negatively impacted Hellenes and Egyptians alike.
The Hellenes and Egyptians didn't stop giving to the world after the ancient periods, and, in fact, their recent history and abundant collection of works and discoveries is what shaped the modern world.
The (western xD) West always likes to say the usual: "but they've influenced our modern world so much" without realising that if ancient Greece and Egypt had shaped - let's say - modern France, 2022 France would look very different than what is today 😂 Yeah their influence was great but they never give importance to the rest of the more modern elements - perhaps even from these civilizations - that impacted them in more immediate ways.
Most importantly, if ancient Greece had impacted the US as much as they claim, we wouldn't get hundreds of US Americans per month online disrespecting the ancient gods and having no idea where the line for religious respect is, and Greeks wouldn't get whiplash from the way USians talk about our antiquity every now and then. Ancient Greece is pretty much exotic to the northwestern countries, as expected.
The rest of Europe wasn't that interested in ancient Greece anyway till Greeks brought their manuscripts to Europe after fleeing the Ottoman conquest. If this event hadn't taken place, maybe another ancient culture would be more celebrated now, because the Egyptians and the Hellenes were not the only great civilizations of antiquity communicating with NW Europe.
Also have you noticed how little value is given to the great discoveries, architecture, philosophy and literature made in Arab/Arabised countries? For example, Egypt didn't stop being great after the Arab colonization. It was always important and attractive to many peoples due to its wealth and advantageous position. It's just due to the anti Arab and anti Muslim sentiments in Europe (and consequently the US) that its ancient past was more talked about. It shows you how the "value" of a culture suddenly shifts, depending on who dictates it. (Idk why the Christian past of Egypt escaped them but my guess is that it wasn't that exotic to them)
I love and respect my ancient heritage, and I feel the timelessness of our ancient works and by no means I want to belittle any ancient achievements. There's nothing wrong in appreciating ancient civilizations and they were indeed, marvelous! However, it's not only in antiquity that our people produced timeless works.
And the way I see it, the Western world is infinitely closer to more modern ideas and inventions than the ideas of Plato, let's say. There's centuries of important history the prominent media ignores. It's like celebrating the first microscope over and over again for hundreds of years, while failing to mention the first observation of the DNA or radiation.

You likely don't follow Dream Smp but there was just a reveal that one person (Character A) is torturing another (Character B, former villain, now in prison) for info on necromancy while the warden of the prison gave CA the equipment to do it and is ignoring CB's screams for help. And half the fandom is trying to justify it with "oh, CB deserves it for threatening to kill a child, killing (1/2)
another child (who he then revived, not justifying /that/ though) and manipulating/abusing the latter." Not only that, but so many people are telling off anyone who pointing out how messed up it is (and don't worry, the story itself so far is showing that it's messed up and won't work) with "it's just fiction, get over it." Like I am legit concerned over how many people are claiming it's cathartic and the character deserves it for their actions. Rant over I guess (2/2) (Dream smp anon) And I forgot to add that this character was /already/ being tortured; he has been in complete solitary confinement for upwards of 2 months and is being starved) and was actively self-harming and destroying items in his cell in a bid to get the warden to come replace them (looking for social interactions, even if it was negative) and people STILL thought that wasn't "enough of a punishment"
-
I have no idea what this show? Comic? Piece of media is but I’m happy to give my opinion on the general situation and use of violence in fiction*.
But I’m not here to take sides in fandom wars and the aim of this blog is not to tell people they can’t write about violence or abuse. It’s to make people think about how it’s used in stories and hopefully create something that’s more realistic and respectful to real survivors.
At the end of the day the reason I’m interested in fiction is because it effects our perception of real survivors. When so much of our popular media is unrealistic in ways that demean survivors that has an effect. I want to remind people that while the violent acts we write about are fiction, similar acts are happening to real people today.
Torture survivors are real. They’re human and they deserve respect.
Here’s the thing Anon, the people you’re mad at are real too. And the characters that sparked this are not.
There’s nothing wrong with having a strong emotional respond to fiction. There’s nothing wrong with getting frustrated with how pigheaded or outright bigoted fandom can be. But it is worth questioning whether responding to this kind of thing is worth it.
Arguments over fictional characters can become extremely heated and result in real world harm. And so long as you’re engaging with stuff in a purely fictional context… well I think the chances of being dismissed, belittled etc are significantly higher. (Note however that being dismissed and belittled still happens when you’re dealing with torture in the real world.)
This is not fair. That does not change other people’s responses or the cultural climate.
I will be blunt; if you are writing and reading in English the majority of fans you deal with will be Western and white. I have personally found this intersection very likely to treat violence as something purely fictional. I have found them unlikely to consider torture as a reality unless they are prompted to.
And from my side of things that prompting is often like dropping an anvil on someone’s foot during the conversation.
Believe me I get it. It is infuriating to see real, deadly torture techniques interpreted as harmless. It is hurtful seeing torture victims blamed for their own suffering. This happens on the news as often as it does in fandom so the fact these feelings are being set off by something fictional doesn’t make a lot of difference. Because these arguments are used in the real world against real people.
Seeing torture apologia touted as this weeks hot take is something you are allowed to be mad about. I’d be a hypocrite if I said otherwise.
But educating other people is hard work and you are talking about a piece of media aimed at children. You are probably talking to children. If you’re a teenager yourself it might be hard to hear it put like that.
 It’s still true.
If you really want to have these conversations in your fandom then you need to centre the reality. Underestimating or dismissing the damage solitary confinement and starvation do to people is serious because it props up real world systems of abuse. Because it justifies ‘tough’ sentences to level of isolation that leave people mutilated by their own hand, or unable to function in society. Or dead. Because it leads to doctors ‘prescribing’ diets used in death camps.
Here’s the thing, talking about that reality to children is a fraught process. Especially when they’re children who don’t have any experience of seeing this stuff. And unless you’re their parent or teacher educating them is not your job.
Sending them down an internet rabbit hole that leads to photos of real injuries, real torture, real mass graves… I think that has the potential to go very badly.
Enjoying something and then discovering that the fandom is toxic is unpleasant. But my impression is that’s the problem here: the fandom interactions are leaving you feeling like shit.
 Disengage.
You do not need the fandom to enjoy uh… whatever Dream smp is. You do not need their permission and if the fandom is a negative space for you, you are allowed to leave.
If some of these people are your friends then by all means try to privately explain why their words hurt you and use this blog as a resource. But ask yourself how much you want to be friends first because that is a long painful process that might not work.
Torture apologia is everywhere and fixing it is going to take decades.
Accept that you can not control other people’s actions. Accept that some people will always be assholes.
If seeing torture apologia hurts you then… you probably need to find a piece of media without torture to enjoy. Because apologia is so present that I think that’s the only way to completely avoid coming across it in fandom.
Once again I understand. I’ve volunteered to be bombarded with this stuff every day. It is upsetting. It is also embedded our global culture and the popular media exported to every single nation on the planet.
Constantly being confronted with it and stewing in that anger and hurt is unhealthy.
Step back. Do something else for a while. Take a look at this post I made last week. You might find some of the advice on dealing with these feelings helpful.
You can not make people care. Hopefully most of the people you’re talking to will grow and learn and become more compassionate people. But you can’t force that process.
And you don’t have to deal with their bullshit while they’re still growing.
Shouting at other people isn’t always helpful and it isn’t activism. If you want to do something constructive there are a lot of organisations that would gladly accept your money and your time.
Here’s a couple that seem relevant:
Just Detention
Solitary Watch
The World Food Programme
Amnesty International
 I hope that helps. :)
Available on Wordpress.

so riordan made a half assed lame excuse on his lazy/racist writing on piper yesterday and on top of that he made another one on samirah and i’m muslim so i am going to talk about it
Tumblr media
damn i’m so sorry these people have been pushing you past your comfort zone about your wildly popular racist caricatures of minorities that have great impact on your young, impressionable target audience. while its fine that if he takes a break for his mental health he still needs to deal with these problems you can’t just take a break and hope they go away.
Tumblr media
why does he think everyone is bullying him. if they talked in all caps, cussed at you, or didn’t stop bothering you, i’m sorry they’re just trying to get you to realize how racist your books are, which you keep refusing to believe. i can believe that a few of them were doing it for attention, but it couldn’t be the majority. and my god, god forbid people want you to write your books the way you preferred, without racist stereotypes. 🙈
Tumblr media
you can set your boundaries but you keep ignoring the people, you don’t listen. like you put yourself out there as a writer you are open to criticism
Tumblr media
why does he keep doing this to seem like the good guy. you give excuses and don’t do anything and just say that its up to you, you can think whatever you want 🥰🥰. like its such an obvious excuse not to take any action.
Tumblr media
i’m sorry but no matter how many muslims you’ve interacted with you haven’t gotten the full experience and last time i checked teachers aren’t the kids best friends soo uhm. anyways the rest of it is just him telling his experience with muslimah students so its just there.
Tumblr media
so uhm you just said your students ‘unwillingly’ become an ambassador to everyone she knew’. and then you went to talk to them about islam to make sure you were TEACHING THEM YOUR SOURCE MATERIAL CORRECTLY. i’m sorry imagine. these are kids not some scholars you go to consult. there are so many muslims all over the internet and youtube sharing their experiences for you to access on how to ‘represent their experience’ correctly. you’re the teacher here. picture this:as a muslilm, i teach at a public school and while teaching about Christianity in class, no i would double check or some dumb shit with the students. like educate yourself i’m sorry. anyways apparently he blames his mistakes on himself then goes on to deny he ever made any mistakes i can’t.
Tumblr media
so this is a blatant lie. 99% of muslims i’ve met have never read all of sahih bukhari and sahih muslim. usually only scholars do that when they are studying islam for YEARS. and FIVE different interpretations of the quran on top of that. ok so sahih bukhari is 9 books that are over 300 pages each and sahih musilm is 7 volumes with also about 300+ pages each. and then the english versions of the quran are 600 pages. and he claims he read five of them. i’m so sorry but no he didn’t. he writes books so fast and he released mcga around the time toa was being released almost one book per year so he did not have a lot of spare time. the rest ig i can let slide. also and if he did do all of that why does he make so many mistakes in writing samirah. and even IF you accept his excuses reading ALL of this source material is great for teaching your class or whatever but not for writing a modern day muslim. you don’t need to lie to us rick ❤️
Tumblr media
most of this is just describing what she’s like but his writing did also add in the model minority, smart kid trope. like no they don’t have to be a terrorist or a A+ student who is the best at everything. there is a middle ground to their personality.
Tumblr media
i actually used to love his rep in sam. that’s how i got into the series. i saw a hijabi girl on his website. i got excited and read all of his books. i loved piper, leo, hazel, percy, annabeth, sadie, carter, nico, everyone. now that i look back i was younger and didn’t see anything wrong with it back then. its great that he tried to portray minorities but he did it so badly and now is just denying the faults that his now older readers are trying to tell him.
Tumblr media
hey, uhm didn’t you read all of sahih bukhari and muslim? hmm i didn’t think so. anyways the way he dealt with it honestly wasn’t that bad. but the whole ‘whoops’. like why does he keep portraying himself as the innocent old white man just trying his best.
Tumblr media
honestly how he wrote samirah as a hijabi was the dumbest thing i’ve ever read. its is totally fine if she wasn’t hijabi, many muslim girls aren’t, and that is their choice. but he decided to make her like a weird middle ground. it was so lazy and inconsistent. in the first book she says she wears it when she needs to, like in situations like going to the masjid. this was fine, since many muslim girls do that. then in the next books she wears it all the time except when she’s in valhalla for some reason. hijabi girls take of their scarves when they’re at home or with family, but making her claim the entirety of vallhalla as her family. that was just demeaning and stupid to me. it takes away its value. and i fucking hated that last sentence. for hijabis, their hijab is important and not a toy or weapon or a MAGIC ITEM. and then on top of that she would have to take it of to hide. he could’ve made it anything else. her hijab isn’t some token item istg.
Tumblr media
i love how he admits that they are a big problem and abusive and usually engage with child marriages. i’m relatively he doesn’t understand what the people even meant by it. the practice is a problem that isn’t supposed to be seen in a nice light. the only possible way it could be slightly ok is that if ADULTS agree they 100% do not want to choose who they want to get married to and let their parents choose, and both sides agree. samirah was a child and he decided to make her wedding life decided since the age of 12. and it was ok because amir was conventionally attractive and she loved him. WHAT IF SHE DIDNT. this literally is a dangerous arranged marriage. and arranged marriages are not ok, and mostly perpetuated by victims of it who will end up passing it down their family lines. my parents got an arranged marriage and I HAVE NEVER SEEN THEM DISPLAY ANY SIGNS OF AFFECTION. arranged marriages are not a trope that your can turn around to be a quirky personality trait for your characters.
Tumblr media
i’m sorry that’s not how arranged marriages work. most likely if she said something her grandparents would have shut her done and continued with the marriage, as that is what you usually happens. do not portray the small amount of consented, ‘happy’ arranged marriages as the majority. it is a huge problem that many desi/middle eastern cultures are trying to erase. even on top of that he writes situations where she’s going to be in trouble for acting up and ‘jeopardizing the marriage agreement’ and that her grandparents think she’s ‘lucky that she could get the fadlan family to agree to marry their son to her’. these statements are often used in forced and dangerous marriages, so don’t try and justify your actions. if you wanted to show traditional customs in a positive light, there are so many richer parts of samirah’s culture you could’ve focused on and you chose arranged marriage. 😻 all you’ve done is given parents and authority figures a westernized resource to justify arranged and forced marriages, especially with the minimal explanation on how the marriage isn’t forced in the actual books. and yes, your books do condone child marriage samirah is clearly deemed into this marriage ever since the young age of 12. she lived her life knowing she would marry amir. no one has only one crush throughout their life. imagine how she would’ve grown up. sorry you only consider opinions that align with those in you mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i’m going to be honest i did like that one scene it was written nicely and accurately but the explanation he gives just ruins the entire thing. the way he just if this strikes you as islamophobic, or samirah as a hurtful, uhm no explanation i just disagree 😽. the way you wrote her is a hurtful stereotype sorry you can’t see it.
Tumblr media
oops, you did. too bad you don’t want to do anything about it.
Tumblr media
why do you think people are painting you in a negative light, so many of your characters are written on hurtful and negative stereotypes. people aren’t painting it that way, you need to calm down w your ego and listen. dang i’m sorry your best is giving half-assed excuses and not actually doing anything. i’m even more sorry people are mad that a highly privileged author that has a lot of influence is done talking about his racist depictions of minorities in his books.
Tumblr media
dang must be lucky to take a break from the social media, imagine what all the minorities you wrote about have to go with everyday weather they are on social media or not. people aren’t bullying you this is valid criticism you refuse to listen to.
Tumblr media
fuck you
obviously these are my opinions do not judge every muslim based on what i’ve said come to me if you have a problem with it
anyways support jewish, muslim, black, brown, asian, hispanic, indigenous, lgbtq+, disabled, and other minority authors and creators.

The Scarlet Letter: Let’s talk about RWBY’s male LGBT rep
I have been sitting on this post for nearly four weeks waiting until the 15th due to the Before the Dawn spoiler rules.
So let's start with a blunt statement: RWBY's male LGBT representation has not been good. If the series' handling of female LGBT rep is good (which... well there's worse shows) and the general standard for how you write LGBT characters in a show like this, its handling of male rep has been... how not to. And Before the Dawn kinda solidified the idea in my head that the show's handling of its male LGBT cast just isn't good enough, either by the standards of when RWBY began in 2013, or today in 2020 when compatively massive steps have been taken over the past decade to show a more diverse list of characters... or at least a more diverse list of female characters.
I don't wanna make this a pissing match over how over-or-under-represented male or female LGBT characters are, but I feel like it's safe to say that the majority of the trend-setters for modern romances, especially in western animation, have been between women. Korra and Asami from Korra, Chloe and Max from Life is Strange, Marceline and Bubblegum in Adventure Time, (insert the relevant Steven Universe characters here, never watched it), and more recently, Adora and Catra in She-Ra and Luz in Owl House.
Compatively, while studies have shown that in general male LGBT characters get more appearances on a purely numerical level, in general they're more one-off characters there to pad a roster, or played more for comedy (see Josh Gad in the Beauty and the Beast remake or the gay guy in Avengers Endgame that was more notable for how hard China and Russia snapped him out of existance). The only big male-LGBT focused media I can think of from the last decade would be Yuri On Ice, Moonlight, IDW's Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye (Chromedome/Rewind best pairing fuck you Roberts for issue 16) Love Simon, and the anime adaptation of Banana Fish.
So it's no surprise that RWBY basically follows these ideas. It's big romance is (unless the writers are very stupid) going to be between Blake and Yang, their first out character was Ilia, Coco got sent to the Book Dimension where she confirmed "I use my sunglasses to perv on women without their knowledge" which uh... yeah you can definitely tell RWBY is written by men... and Volume 6 had Saph and Terra being a good example of an LGBT couple without any real drama. In the last three years alone, the show has drastically increased its lesbian and bisexual characters, alongside even including its first out trans character in May Marigold (albeit only revealed on Twitter). In general, these depictions of sexuality have been pretty OK. Would have liked it if Ilia wasn't immediately written out of the show after Volume 5 as it made her feel a bit more disposable than intended but whatever, subject for another day.
RWBY's male rep though is a bit spottier. There's the plant bois in Volume 5's premiere, we nearly had Pilot Boi until some last-minute revisions, and... Scarlet.
Tumblr media
Why Scarlet's a bad launchpad for male LGBT rep
I don't like Scarlet or how his sexuality has been handled. Scarlet's homosexuality wasn't revealed in the show, or by the writers, or even in anything that's actually canon. He's confirmed gay in his sole of dialogue in a non-canon fan anthology, where the manga's Twitter team had to say that Miles suggested the idea and approved of it.
In short, Scarlet is Dumbledore'd, where his sexuality is revealed in out-of-show material and in a way that doesn't make it supremely obvious (Miles himself never commented to confirm this so this news was limited in how far it could spread. I'm genuinely curious how many people still don't know Scarlet's gay), and Scarlet himself is a nothing character who was written out of the show after Volume 3 and only reappeared in Before The Dawn, half a decade after he vanished. Compared to Ilia, as this came out after Ilia's entire arc in Volume 5, it's not a great starting point for mlm rep. But things would have been forgiven if it had gotten better, if the show did have more male LGBT characters introduced, even just on the Saphron/Terra level of just being around for a few episodes before leaving. Then it would have been a misfire but then we could all say "Things got better."
It... didn't. Which is why when Before the Dawn released in 2020, a full two years after Scarlet was first confirmed gay, while the franchise had more than doubled its wlw rep, Scarlet remained the one male character in the entire franchise who had a name and liked men. I remember vividly a fake leak for After The Fall which claimed Yatsuhashi would come out to Velvet and admit to having a crush on Fox. And I remember as well how many people were disappointed when it was said to be false, because it would have been nice for Yatsuhashi's character, especially after the fleshing out he gets in the CFVY books. If Yatsu had come out as gay in the books I'd like his writing enough to say he's a good case for rep, albeit with the caveat of "This is all in side material." But in reality, the leak was fake and Coco was confirmed gay instead.
Unfortunately, Before the Dawn proceeded to ruin Scarlet and made me at times feel genuinely uncomfortable as a queer man! Let's talk about that.
Before The Dawn is crap and Scarlet's writing is borderline offensive
I hate Before the Dawn. It's... bad. I read it while on a vacation and the only solace I had about the entire thing was that I'd bought an M&M chocolate bar. The bar was finished before the book. That bummed me out. It's not a very well written book, the prose is very Early 2010s YA Writer, none of the characters are memorable and there's various Fun Incidents like "NGDO using children as bait for Grimm," and "Neptune's hydrophpobia being used as a threat to torture him and the scene is played for comedy."
Theo was cool. I can't wait to see him as written by good writers, he should be a highlight of the Vacuo arc.
I had two hopes for Before the Dawn- "Don't be bad," and "Let Scarlet and Sage be well written." I'd liked how After The Fall had handled some of its characters (barring, y'know, Coco perving on women), especially Fox and Yatsu who were surprising in how much I liked them. I was looking forward to seeing Myers give Sage and Scarlet similar treatment- two relatively nothing characters meant he'd have a blank slate to write them however he wanted, he could give them unique personalties and if nothing else it could be cool to see their Semblances.
And then I read the book. (Sage fans I am so sorry for you, you got baited harder than Johnlock fans)
Scarlet's a giant dickhead in the book. It's his sole character trait and his inner monologues go on, and on, and on about how much he hates Sun, how he revels in mocking him. Most of his dialogue is sarcastic put-downs about Sun and how lame he is, and Sun is never properly allowed to defend himself or point out how going with Blake meant he was able to help save Haven Academy.
(hey remember when Sun in Volume 6 expressly says to Blake "I was a bad leader for ditching Neptune and the others, and I need to work on that" only for Before the Dawn to have him staunchly refuse to accept that he let the team down? I don't think Myers did but I do)
Scarlet being a ratty bitch would be one thing if, again, the franchise had done more rep. He'd still be a badly written character, but it wouldn't sting as much. But because Scarlet is still the only expressly confirmed male LGBT character in canon (the book teases that Nolan is gay but there's never confirmation either way beyond him smiling at Scarlet), it means that he has to represent that entire ideal. So when the one gay man in Remnant is being an asshole and a snide loser, that means that by extension, this is how the franchise sees gay men. And that fucking sucks! I wanted to come out of Before The Dawn singing its praises, I wanted to like the book, but it was a massive letdown, especially coming off of the other big 2020 RWBY controversy involving gay characters.
Yeah. We're doing this.
Tumblr media
Clover and Fair Game: Technically not queerbaiting. BUT:
Let's pre-empt this: Clover wasn't queerbaiting, and Fair Game, while cool and I dig it, kudos to them for becoming one of the top 5 RWBY pairings on AO3 in one year that's fucking impressive (I say with mild malice as an IronQrow main), never had a chance. The writing never seriously boosted it barring one interaction which was flirty (them talking in the lobby of the Schnee Manor), and everything else was out of show boosting through the social media teams and CRWBY hyping it themselves by saying they liked it. If you wanna blame people, blame the animators who went off-script with stuff like Kim Newman adding the wink as a deliberate nod to the Volume 4 waitress, or the social media team deliberately using the same policies for Fair Game as they do for Renora and Bumblebee.
Tumblr media
It wasn't Eddy's fault that things escalated, and he himself has said that in retrospect, he should have warned people that this never had a shot.
But I can't blame the Fair Game fanbase. Because Fair Game took off like wildfire. It came right as the fanbase began seriously asking for more male rep, Qrow's pretty hot, and the Clover wink came right after the Great IronQrow Reawakening of November 9th, 2019. The rocket was primed, and they rode it to the moon. Finally, to these people, after seven years RWBY seemed to be doing something with mlm rep in show. People started getting into RWBY just for Clover and Qrow's interactions. And if heroes were boring, Watts and Tyrian also had a fantastic dynamic that made Nuts and Volts one of the more popular villain ships overnight. Things seemed to be turning around! RWBY was remembering that gay men existed! You could hear the choir sing!
... And for those people, that meant that episode 12 hit like Truck-Kun.
Tumblr media
People got pissed. People were horrified. And it didn't help that some members of CRWBY had said in the build-up that episode 12 would have some shots that made them nauseous (probably the Tyrian thumb thing) Out of context, it looked to these fans like CRWBY were basically laughing at their suffering, like they were saying "Lol, you thought you had a chance, get fucked, I hope your vomit burns on the way up."
Yeah, Fair Game was never gonna be canon, and I think some people ran too far with it. But in the wider context of how desperate RWBY's mlm community had gotten for basic crumbs of content? I can see why they'd run with what they had. The writers aren't at fault for what happened, but CRWBY didn't help matters. And that desperate mix of what felt like official backing from the crew, jokes about how cute the ship was, and the hope that finally the show would have onscreen rep? I can see why people ran with it.
So why is the show more lackluster in depicting mlm characters?
Money. Let's be honest, most RWBY fans don't care if the show doesn't have good male rep. I'm willing to bet some of you reading this won't care and just dismiss it as not being that big a problem. I don't think the writers care if the show doesn't have good mlm rep because they're not poaching that market. They're after what they see as a bigger, more lucrative market, which in this case is female LGBT rep. That gets people buying games, watching shows, raising awareness and boosting awareness of your property, which means you make more money. In short: Two women kissing hits more markets and generates more attention than two men.
Am I saying that Miles, Monty and Kerry deliberately sat down seven years ago and said "We're not doing gay men because it won't generate enough ad revenue and traffic to be worth the loss in revenue from homophobes?" No, that's silly. But I'm saying that it's less important for them, and it shows in the things that are small and add up. Things like Miles not verifying Scarlet's sexuality or retweeting the manga account's confirmation to spread the message (compared to how he enthusiastically confirmed Ilia being a lesbian himself during the Reddit AMA). It shows in how Pilot Boi would have been the first mlm character only to die in his second full episode until M&K were told about the Bury Your Gays trope. It shows in how Shannon believes that Ozma is "megaqueer" and Miles jokingly laughs it off instead of confirming it, leaving it to just be Shannon's headcanon. It shows in how actor shipping is compared between the mlm and wlw ships, where Arryn and Barbara's frequent pushes for Bumblebee are seen as "official confirmation that it's endgame" while Michael and Kerry saying they enjoy Seamonkeys is treated as "well it would be cute if they did it, but they're never going to."
I'm not gonna say anything like "CRWBY are gonna have Qrow end up with a woman like Robyn out of spite against the bad apples of the Fair Game crowd." I'm not gonna say that I don't think CRWBY cares about male representation in the series. It is, however, definitely a low priority for them, and because that leads to gaffes like Scarlet's writing in Before The Dawn being offensive in his depiction, it only makes the contrast between the sexes all the more painfully apparent.
I'm kinda tired of waiting for Rooster Teeth to show that they do care about mlm. I'm kinda tired of RWBY's male rep being written like it came from a 1993 time capsule where I have to enhance the screen to see a guy holding a sign of Sun's abs or be content with the only onscreen rep still being the plant bois in Volume 5. I'm tired of how often the crew dances around answering basic questions about sexuality (and age, and birthdays, and heights, and so on) by treating it as a spoiler question, as if just wanting to know what way people swing would ever be a spoiler. I'm just... tired of all this. When the best mlm rep in Rooster Teeth's history remains the two dads in Camp Camp who show up in a few episodes, that should say something really bad about your company and your biases (To say nothing of the recent Red vs Blue seasons and their blatant queerbaiting for Grif and Simmons and the whole can of worms that is Donut).
I'd like to not feel like I'm borderline unwelcome because I'd like to see two men in this show kiss, and that the sole thing that represents people like me in this show is some British twat who complains about sand.
I'd just like to feel like my sexuality isn't a joke to Rooster Teeth (or at the very least, be like Donut and have it be a funny one). But at this point after the last few years? I feel like a very uncomfortable punchline to them. And it just sucks.

Hi! I'm too shy to come off anon, but I need your help understanding something. I hope I'm not bothering you!!
I don't want to interact with anyone who is a fascist, but I'm not entirely sure what makes someone fascist. Can you please explain it to me?
I know I could look it up myself, but I know that not all definitions online can be correct and I just want your perspective;;
Thanks!
Hi anon! Well, fascism comes in many forms so “sussing out who’s a fascist” is technically a little harder to do than having a simple checklist. After all, doesn’t a White Supremacist have different beliefs to a Japanese fascist? And doesn’t a Japanese fascist have different beliefs to a Wahabist? These beliefs clash don’t they? Well, yes and no. Sure the surface level beliefs are different but the underlying core beliefs of these groups are actually quite similar; it’s the specifics which are different. Even though it isn’t a “bible” on what is fascism and shouldn’t be taken as gospel, Umberto Eco has an essay called “Ur-Fascism” which contains 14 points, which can help us identify whether certain beliefs are fascist no matter the specifics of their belief system. I’ll explain the points in short and give some examples. Quick disclaimer, I am not an expert on fascism or any of the ideologies I’ll discuss by any means so if you aren’t taking Umberto Eco’s writing as the 100% correct truth, definitely don’t take mine as that either (this is how you should treat most sources tho):
1. Cult of Tradition and 2. Rejection of modernity
I put these two together because they’re kind of inseparable. This is basically the idea that there was a “glorious past” that people need to return to and modernity is a corruption of that “glorious past”. In British fascist thought, this past is generally the 19th century at the zenith of the British Empire or mid-20th century Britain. The latter is more common for people who wish to be a little more PC with their writings; instead of trying to use a by-gone era that pretty much no one alive can remember, they use a much more recent time with nostalgic ideas of “the good old days” which doesn’t seem threatening on it’s surface but is dogwhistling for a time when there weren’t as many immigrants in the country.
You may have seen the “reject modernity, embrace tradition” meme and it’s pretty much the most obvious incarnation of this idea. Similarly you may seen people online use “degenerate” as an insult. If you look at the meaning of the degenerate it means “having lost the physical, mental, or moral qualities considered normal and desirable; showing evidence of decline”; it’s microcosm of these ideas put into a single insult. This is why you tend to see conservatives use it more than progressives.
I’d also argue that terfs obsession with 2nd wave feminism and their utter rejection of intersectionality and modern feminism is another manifestation of this idea.
3. Action for actions sake
This is less detectable in terms of individuals but still important to note that these people tend to support action without a cause. Sure the insurrection at the white house earlier this year was action, but it had no substance behind it. It was action for actions sake, which is why any principled leftist didn’t support it. Fascists will tend to openly just call for action but won’t be very specific about the purposes of the action; as long as they agree with the ideology behind it they’ll support it. It’s why fascists love harassment campaigns and mindless acts of terror. Take Wahabist terrorist orgs like Al-Qaeda or ISIS, it doesn’t matter if bombing an Ariana Grande concert has no point, the only point is the action itself.
4. Disagreement is treason
This one’s pretty self explanatory, they will ostracize you if you disagree with them. Again, terfs tend to do this, and I had a long conversation with an ex-terf I called a dumbass, who basically said that she was ostracized by them and mocked for having different beliefs (hope she’s doing well actually). There’s numerous stories from ex-terfs like this.
5. Fear of difference
There’s a tendency for fascists to group people into “us” and “them”. “They” are considered to be intruders who need to be removed whereas “we” are the people who deserve to be here because it is “our” right to be here. In Zulu Nationalism, this tends to be any non-Zulu speakers who they deem to be “Shangaan” even if they aren’t actually Tsonga, it’s just a pejorative at this point. If you see vague references to the “elite” without any reference to who they are and what makes them “elite”, this is tends to be a dogwhistle for Jewish people. Western Fascists have very little issue with the workings of capitalism itself or the accumulation of wealth by capitalists, they just don’t like “them”, taking “our” stuff. Any references to “us” and “them” is pretty much a red flag.
6. Appeal to Social Frustration
Fascists will tend to brush upon actual issues faced by the poor today but will instead blame it on an outside force. You’ll see job loss being blamed on immigrants or vague “elites”. Terfs do this too. They’ll see young girls who are genuinely struggling with patriarchal issues and divert all that pent up rage towards trans people and the “q*eers” (which they do tend to use as a slur unlike what most people would have you think).
7. Obsession with a Plot
Everything is a conspiracy! The election was rigged! 9/11 was fake! that fucking pizza place/this furniture company is a sex ring! All of these are supposedly plots by the deep state who are trying to do... something or other. You’ll notice these “Plots” don’t actually have a purpose, but the fact that there is a plot itself is the issue. This is a way of engendering paranoia in the group while also feeling that there is a constant war against you even if there isn’t. This is also why, despite news sources being pro-capitalist the right will swear up and down it’s leftist media which is controlled by “them” (usually just meaning Jewish people).
8. The enemy is both strong and weak
“Trans people have infiltrated academia and the only reason people refuse to see gender as an immutable biological concept, is because they’re too afraid of the trans cabal to say anything. But also everyone can tell trans people are crazy and haha you have a high suicide rate.” It’s contradictory that’s the point. They need to feel that they’re both counterculture but also they need to be winning at all times so that contradiction is necessary. Also the use of the word “cabal” is a pretty big red flag for all forms of fascism.
9. Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy, 10. Contempt for the weak, 11. Everybody is educated to become a hero and 12. Machismo and weaponry
All of these are kind of interrelated so I’m grouping them together (also this is already fucking long as hell so I don’t wanna bore you any further). You’ll tend to see a love for the military or at least military aesthetics when looking through fascist blogs. Guns aren’t just a tool for fascists, they’re representative of masculinity and the necessity of violence. Pacifists and anyone who refuses to fight are weak and therefore are “degenerate”. If you do not fight, if you are not willing to fight, you cannot be a “hero” (an ubermensch or a matyr). This comes with the fetishization of violence instead of the recognition of violence being an means to an end, and the worship of individuals rather than of communities and organizations. Take Japanese fascists and their lionisation of the imperial military and their desire to once again have an actual army.
Terfs don’t necessarily fit these roles except for arguably 10 considering how much they seem to look down upon the mentally ill and those who commit suicide and surprisingly 11 since that involves the hatred of non-standard sexual activities and terfs hate non-standard sex (this is from the most vanilla bitch who is very uncomfortable with kink but understands its not inherently good or bad). I have a feeling this is more so because terfs are mainly women (there are male terfs ofc) whereas this was written for male led organizations.
13. Selective populism
When fascists talk about “the people” they tend to mean “the people we like”. “The working class” can be translated to “this cishet white christian man from Minnesota who owns land but hey he lives in a rural area so he’s working class right?”. They’ll also tend to have “tokens” who will suddenly become the mouth piece of the entire community they’re supposedly representing even if no one in the community asked them to (i.e. Milo Yiannopoulos).
14. Ur fascism speaks Newspeak
They speak in terms which are both inaccessible to anyone outside of their circles whilst being so simple that once you learn them it becomes easy to understand. They abhor any form of “academic” speech so you’ll rarely see them source things (unless those things happen to agree with their views, which is rare but Jordan Peterson is popular for a reason) and if they do source things they probably wouldn’t have read them fully and will rely on you also not reading them. This is to limit any critical thinking so that your brain is basically jellified into an unquestioning organ which only responds “yes” or “no” and only appeals to a higher authority without any form of reasoning involved. This is why they complain about “the lefts memes being too wordy”... because they’re used to not having to read (this is somewhat tongue in cheek but heyho if the boot fits).
And that’s the 14 main features of fascism, if anyone is displaying multiple of these ideas then they are most likely fascist, and if an organization or group continuously replicates these ideas, then they are definitely fascist. I hope this wasn’t too long but like I said... very complex topic. (Also hopefully this is written well, it’s 10 PM and I am surviving off Irn Bru energy drink). Hope this helped!

Lol its fine!! Reply whenever you can ^_^
But ahh true, true. Idk why I thought it would be a hint to the music lol but a sort og an evolution of the concept so to speak. Either way, am excited for the comeback because fresh svt is always iconic. Oohhh the concept photos are all pretty and idk which one to pick jfkshfjsjd. Like they are all very on brand for them but also unique and pretty. Very artsy haha.
Ahh yes, rabbitnwas forever iconic and it was what helped other places like discord to do similar things! But ah understandable!! Both seventeen and nct (when I was getting into kpop more) always felt like BIG well known groups due to their fandoms being so big at least to me. Especially when people always recommended their songs i just assumed they have been around for a while like bts when I joined only to realize they are still rookies. Monster rookies indeed!! The fact so many people love them is enough for me to say they are amazing, well respected and loved by many. Those comments annoy me, especially when people downplay their hard work by claiming 'bighit helped them get more famous' like what!? Yes bighit did help with getting more western attention per se but like downplaying as if they haven't achieved anything at all is confusing to me. Claiming how streaming fans aren't doing s good job to which im like one, mass streaming isn't healthy and two, fans who do try their best and we do beat records of our own. Seventeen isn't unpopular, just because they aren't you know who level doesn't mean they aren't big like do people forget what unpopular means?
Anywhoo, a day late but happy late birthday to our tiger King. May he forever rule the tiger land and take over the world with his tiger agenda lol.
yes! one side fits my aesthetic the best but all the concept photos were nice ^^
and yeah it is annoying but at the same time those people are so detached from reality that I'm just sort of like whatever djflgj like 'it's obvious to anyone who knows what they're talking about you're wrong so I'm not going to bother arguing w you' is sort of my mindset when i see those comments dhfkj bc if i don't think of it that way then i get angry easily. the way i see it bh/hybe definitely is helping SVT with western promotions but like. i don't think SVT/pledis would have been incapable of expanding into the western market on their own if they wanted to. but it's a given that it will be easier and faster with hybe bc they have connections and a reputation in the western market already established. honestly I'd guess that was one of pledis's main incentives for agreeing to the acquisition. but at the same time hybe and western media wouldn't give SVT the time of day if they truly were the flops some ppl try to claim they are lol
and yeah agreed, streaming culture can be super unhealthy. it's one thing to do it if you want to but at the same time don't be losing sleep over it or prioritizing it over your real life responsibilities. and definitely don't guilt trip and say a bunch of toxic things to others to get them to stream... i feel like it would be a lot healthier if fanbases just stuck to simply explaining, hey this is what streaming is and why it can be important (for like music shows etc) and here's how to do it properly if you choose to stream, and then just let people decide for themselves. there would still be people more than willing to do it, and without the guilt tripping maybe even more people would just find it enjoyable. but hey, what do i know? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
i also think most kpop stans underestimate how many views from from casual listeners and fans vs hardcore fans/streamers. like streaming does make a difference, but not 100M views difference like some people try to act like it does. tbh there are a lot of groups that have a smaller core fanbase than SVT but get hundreds of millions of views bc they have a lot of casual listeners. you can even see it internally too: don't wanna cry is SVTs most viewed MV by a mile, it's the only one to pass 100M views, let alone 200M. and it has nothing to do w carats streaming dwc extra hard, it's bc it's arguably SVTs most well known song outside of the fandom. i see reactors all the time who react to it and say "oh i know this song! i had no idea it was by seventeen" and you can look at the comments section and see a bunch of people saying the song has a fandom of its own/even if you're not a carat you have to know this song
kpop stans also put too much emphasis on views imo and also equate views to popularity, which on the surface might make sense but isn't always the case. actually in terms of profit, groups/companies make the vast majority of their money off of album, merch, and ticket sales than they do off of views. but those are all things that are a lot harder to "sell" than views, because they actually cost money for the consumer, while you can watch an MV for free. hence why it makes sense that there are a lot of groups with hundreds of millions of views that get relatively low album sales. it's easy to convince casual fans and and listeners to watch an MV than to get them to buy something
and I'm not trying to diss other groups at all or try to say groups that consistently get 200M+ views are flops, they're absolutely not. I'm just trying to point out that kpop stans completely underestimate the amount of casual listeners that exist
but this is why SVT is honestly such a fascinating case. their MV views are nothing to write home about, and yet they're the second highest selling k-act at the moment and are in the top 10 if not top 5 highest selling k-acts of all time, their album sales are literally insane. a lot of people chalk it up to carats being bad streamers but like i said before, streaming isn't going to make a difference of hundreds of millions of views. this indicates to me that seventeen have a bigger core fanbase (ie people who call themselves carats and actually keep track of seventeens activities) but a smaller audience of casual listeners compare to other kpop groups. and i think a lot of people, carats, and non carats alike, pick up on this in some way or another but don't realize that's what's going on and it manifests in kind of weird ways sometimes
and this fact isn't something that bothers me, i actually think it's super important more than anything for SVT to have a strong core fanbase if what they're shooting for is longevity. but i do find it strange bc as i said, groups that do better with digitals than physical sales make total sense from a consumer standpoint!! so how did SVT end up like this!! it's so interesting for me to think about. i think i would have a better idea of why this is if i had been around since debut but alas
the only thing i can come up with is that SVT is better at retaining fans or like... getting fans invested in the group so people who become carats are less likely to be multistans? bc multistans play a huge part in both being and attracting casual listeners. they're the ones making video compilations and edits and content that includes multiple kpop groups, which is how a lot of non-fans get interested in other groups. whereas if someone is just a carat and making content for SVT the people most likely to watch that content is ppl who are already carats. i know im not the only one that's noticed it's kind of rare for SVT to be included in multistan edits and videos. which i don't blame anyone for, i think most of those people genuinely just don't stan SVT and they shouldn't be expected to include a group they don't know we'll or at all. at the end of the day ppl can make what they like. but it's interesting to observe as a general trend. but idk SVT potentially having a lower percentage of multistans still isn't really an explanation for why SVT doesn't have as many casual listeners bc those things kind of just go hand in hand. like either one could be the cause of the other one if that makes sense
ANYWAY sorry for the long reply but as i said the ratio of SVTs core fanbase vs casual listeners is a topic i find endlessly fascinating dhfmfj
