Main Verse II - Backstory

Thousands of years ago the old gods divided the world into two parts: their realm of immortality and power and the mortal world of life and death. The raised a mist so thick and confusing that no one could find a way through and mortal souls were doomed to forever wander along the shores of a white sea, locked in an endless circle of birth and death. There was one god, treacherous and bored, willing to bestow the gift of immortality onto mankind and he send Pandora, the first of all witches, through the mist. She carried a box of wonders, filled not only with magic but also with demons and despair. Pandora opened the box once she had reached the shores of the living and henceforth witches walked upon the earth. Magic is connected to the soul of every human being but only a few are talented enough to use it. Depending on the texture and character of each soul magic can be quite different. Some are drawn to an element and they call upon earth and sky alike to let thunderous rainstorms or roaring fires spring from their fingertips. Some are drawn to other souls and they listen to the echoes and whispers of emotions, reading thoughts and controlling hearts with their empathic understanding of mankind. Some are drawn to the blood and bone of our world, to long lost heartbeats and never changing roots. They follow the spirits of the deceased and call upon them in seances to glimpse into past and future alike. And some, the rarest and most powerful souls of all, are drawn to the mist itself. They pass through it, leading the way for ghosts and gods alike, existing outside of time and space. But no matter their power, witches have always been a minority and it did not take long for them to look for each other, to help each other, and to fight each other. Powerful covens emerged, building cathedrals and empires upon the dust and doom of mortal souls, rising as high as the stars only to collapse into oblivion hundreds of years later. There is one coven, nowadays believed to be the oldest and most powerful line of witches still in existence. Throughout the centuries they have gathered like minded witches and warlocks across the entire world, creating a web of magic and an hierarchy controlling their society. The Children of Pandora are feared by all those that do not count themselves members of their coven, controlling the magical world in secret and out of the shadows. They claim to be descendents of that very first witch, Pandora herself, and their aim is to one day rise as high as the gods, amassing so much power that once they are dead their spirits will be able to tear down the mist and walk freely into the realm of immortality, ruling over the old gods as well as all mortals. A long time ago the Children of Pandora were led by high priestesses, powerful female mages that controlled all four elements and watched over the coven like mothers over their offsprings. But as modern times took a hold of the coven these highpriestesses disappeared one by one and men, believing themselves to be stronger and more wise, took their places. Since the early days of the Renaissance it has been those men, leading the coven and therefore most magical beings that fall into their care. One rose above them all, claiming superiority and sole dominion over Pandora's children and the powerful structures of the coven. No one knows where Kuragin came from or since he has wielded magic. But he is the only KING they have ever known and all Children bow to him now. Not many know that the man they call Kuragin, the shadowlord that rules over all their fates and wages war against every other coven that dares to defy his people, is far from being what he seems. There are whispers that he has grown old and tired while others believe him to have already gained immortality. The truth behind it all is that Kuragin is not a man but a mask, a golem maybe, or a reanimated corpse. Frankenstein's monster brought to life by Prometheus's spark. He is a creation of Marian van Helder, Maria Kuragina as she is now known by many. A young witch with small powers, always overshadowed by her extraordinarie grandfather. She lives a rather uneventful life as a historian to the coven's vast pool of knowledge and the entire world sees in her nothing more than a speck of dust in the grand scheme of things. But Marian has long surpassed all those that see in her nothing but another weak and emotional woman. She has created a creature that serves as her stand-in and with the help of fear and rumor she has taken over the entire coven. A queen hidden in the dark of night while all attacks against Kuragin are survived by one that has already died and she is left in peace. Not yet a goddess, but closer with every heartbeat.
