Funny how SCOTUS “originalists” ignore this history
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Benjamin Franklin is revered in history for his fixation on inventing practical ways to make everyday life easier. He was a prolific inventor and author, and spent his life tinkering and writing to share his knowledge with the masses.
One of the more surprising areas Franklin wanted to demystify for the average American? At-home abortions.
Molly Farrell is an associate professor of English at the Ohio State University and studies early American literature. She authored a recent Slate article that suggests Franklin’s role in facilitating at-home abortions all started with a popular British math textbook.
Titled The Instructor and written by George Fisher, which Farrell said was a pseudonym, the textbook was a catch-all manual that included plenty of useful information for the average person. It had the alphabet, basic arithmetic, recipes, and farriery (which is hoof care for horses). At the time, books were very expensive, and a general manual like this one was a practical choice for many families.
Franklin saw the value of this book, and decided to create an updated version for residents of the U.S, telling readers his goal was to make the text “more immediately useful to Americans.” This included updating city names, adding Colonial history, and other minor tweaks.
But as Farrell describes, the most significant change in the book was swapping out a section that included a medical textbook from London, with a Virginia medical handbook from 1734 called Every Man His Own Doctor: The Poor Planter’s Physician.
This medical handbook provided home remedies for a variety of ailments, allowing people to handle their more minor illnesses at home, like a fever or gout. One entry, however, was “for the suppression of the courses”, which Farrell discovered meant a missed menstrual period.
Tumblr media
“The book starts to prescribe basically all of the best-known herbal abortifacients and contraceptives that were circulating at the time,” Farrell said. “It's just sort of a greatest hits of what 18th-century herbalists would have given a woman who wanted to end a pregnancy early.”
“It's very explicit, very detailed, also very accurate for the time in terms of what was known ... for how to end a pregnancy pretty early on.”
Including this information in a widely circulated guide for everyday life bears a significance to today’s heated debate over access to abortion and contraception in the United States. In particular, the leaked Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade and states that “a right to abortion is not deeply rooted in the nation's histories and traditions.”
Farrell said the book was immensely popular, and she did not find any evidence of objections to the inclusion of the section.
“It didn't really bother anybody that a typical instructional manual could include material like this,”she said. “It just wasn't something to be remarked upon. It was just a part of everyday life.”

Going to cautiously posit that if they're moving toward calling Kentucky for Beshear (incumbent Democratic governor) in a blindingly red state Trump won by 30 points, in an off-year election, about 30 minutes after polls close statewide, that is a Good Sign.

Alhaitham and Kaveh as each other's 'home'
(This is a reworked excerpt taken from my Haikaveh essay! If you're interested you can check it out here or as a pdf <3)
Family is an important theme, particularly in regard to Kaveh, as the reason for his guilt is based upon his belief that he destroyed his own family. For Kaveh, family – home – is a place in which “words [are] not necessary” since companionship is valued above all:
Tumblr media
Family is also important for Alhaitham, however, as there is a particular focus on the relationship between him and his late grandmother within his character stories, as her influence over him incentivised him to pursue the “peaceful” way of life he seeks to maintain:
Tumblr media
After the death of his grandmother, Alhaitham lived alone and attended the Akademiya, just as Kaveh did as his mother left for Fontaine after his enrolment. Kaveh’s loss of family leads directly into him meeting Alhaitham. This establishes a direct correlation between Alhaitham and family, indicating that Alhaitham filled a role recently lacking in Kaveh’s life. This is relevant to Alhaitham, as he had enrolled in the Akademiya after the passing of his grandmother, meaning that, similar to Kaveh, he, too, had no family.
Tumblr media
The idea of found family, as in, a tightly knit support network built with mutual sentiment between unrelated people, is introduced in Sumeru as the joint-thesis. Academic family is highly valued amongst scholars and comes into fruition through the working together on projects. This can be observed within the dynamic between Tighnari, Cyno, and Collei, as during the Windblume event, they describe themselves as a family formed outside of academia, even assigning themselves titles akin to a real biological family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alhaitham and Kaveh then established this found family in each other upon working together on a joint thesis, although additional scholars initially worked with them before dropping out. Their argument culminated in Kaveh ripping up their thesis, which effectively ended their friendship, and familial bond, made mutual by Alhaitham removing his name from the project. Kaveh, however,  is described to have pieced the thesis cover back together with “deep regret”, and placed it in his old sketchbook.
In this, Kaveh regrets the loss of his connection with Alhaitham, and the family that their joint thesis established. Although he has pieced together the thesis cover, their family remains severed as reconciliation is perceived as implausible due to their differences:
Tumblr media
Most notably, it is the building which serves as Alhaitham’s house which is crucial to the motif of home. Due to their combined efforts in their joint thesis, the Akademiya gifted the two a research centre, as the results of their thesis had significant impact despite not being completed. When Alhaitham took up the property after graduation, he heard through a third-party, sent by Kaveh, that Kaveh was relinquishing rights of the property due to him not being in need of a house. It was after this that Alhaitham invested in the property, converting it into a house, where he took up residence, and then invited Kaveh to live with him, after the two met in the tavern. Although it is understood to be Alhaitham’s property, since Kaveh relinquished his right to it, Alhaitham considers Kaveh to be his “roommate” rather than a tenant, despite Kaveh paying rent.
Kaveh and Alhaitham split the chores according to Alhaitham’s Character Story, although they mostly fall to Kaveh; they both make attempts to decorate the house; presumably they eat dinner together, according to Alhaitham’s Story Quest where he excuses himself in order to have dinner, only to talk to Kaveh; the two can be seen to share a study; when ordering out, Kaveh orders extra for Alhaitham – a common enough occurrence for Alhaitham to be confident in relying on this. Rather than “cold” and “lonely” this conjures the image of warmth and familiarity. In this, it can be inferred that the two have created a home together.
Referring back to Kaveh’s understanding of “home”, as in a place in which words are not necessary, and linking it to the idea of companionship being more important than understanding introduced in his hangout. The latter idea consists of supporting a person, regardless of the ability to empathise with and relate to their particular struggles, should be valued over attempting to be wholly understood by people who are not willing to listen.
In this, Alhaitham is offered as a companion to Kaveh, where he cannot empathise with Kaveh’s artistic and idealistic struggles, but he is willing to listen to him, rather than offering words which cannot solve Kaveh’s particular problems.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By Kaveh’s understanding of “home” as a place in which people are at ease with each other and support another regardless, this can be seen within his relationship with Alhaitham. As Kaveh has pieced together their ripped up thesis cover with “deep regret” of what it symbolises, the severance of his and Alhaitham’s relationship, Alhaitham inviting Kaveh to live with him serves as mirroring actions of reconciliation.
Kaveh's idea of 'home' in encapsulated in both the building and the company Alhaitham provides. The building that had initially served as a physical representation of their severed harmony of ideals, aborted friendship and dissolved found family, has been transformed into a house, and now a home for the two to share.

Mother, Pet , Shock
Jesus, what in actual hell is Jason gonna do if he ends up whelping a half-alien kid in "no metas allowed" Gotham? Or if he has to explain to Lian that she's not her daddy's only pup anymore? Or if–
Jason pictures a sweet little redheaded newborn all nestled up to his chest, maybe softly glowing and floating or adorably stupid and wickedly clever or just ridiculously tiny and defenseless and all those other things all at once, and feels far, far too many feelings about the idea.
His heart fucking hurts with how many feelings he feels about that idea, in fact.
Alright. Ruled out sneaking out to get an abortion, apparently.
Jason can't actually be a real mom, though. He can't protect a pup with his lifestyle, much less properly raise one. Catherine tried, at least, but Sheila was an absolute piece of shit, and those are his only examples so far as "mothering" behavior goes because he is just not emotionally prepared to ever count Selina, and not even because of her actually being an alpha and therefore more the "fathering" type or all the times he tried to get her arrested back in the day. So just–just how would he ever know how to be a mom for some poor stupid kid who'd probably be just as much of a mouthy, difficult brat as he'd always been? How would he know how to be a mom for a kid genetically crazy enough to jack the fucking Batmobile's tires? How?!
Maybe . . . maybe Roy would want them, though, or . . . or something. He wants Lian even though she's Cheshire's, after all. And Jason couldn't put any pup up for adoption unless he was absolutely sure they weren't Kori's because of the whole alien superpowers issue, obviously, but that's what DNA tests are for, right? And who knows, maybe Kori would want them herself, if they were hers.
Jason would have to actually ask to know if either of them would even want a pup that was half him, of course, which just sounds like some fresh fucking hell right there.
.
.
.
"Mr. Luthor? You with us?"
"Not at the moment, no," Luthor mutters from the pavement, pushing himself up carefully and dusting his suit off with a mildly annoyed expression, like they're not currently in the middle of a half-destroyed city block while innumerable robot minions and Kal and Kara are all throwing down in the sky overhead. "Hn. Is there a reason the two of you are perched on one of Superman's pet teenagers? The more annoying one, even?"
"Convenient bullet-catcher," Mercy replies dismissively, shooting down a couple more of the aerial robots.
"Also surprisingly obedient," Hope muses.
"Asshole, I literally just saved your life and fucked up half an army of shitty robots to keep it saved, and as for you two, I did your fucking jobs for you, and all three of you are all gonna be shitheads to me about it?" Kon demands in exasperation. "Seriously?"
"Seems like a reasonable source of entertainment for the afternoon," Luthor says, idly watching Mercy shoot down a few more of the airborne robots. "Given that Superman's being inconsiderately dull and not getting himself punched nearly hard enough."
"Let me the fuck up already," Kon says flatly.
.
.
.
Clark wakes up.
Clark didn't even know he wasn't awake.
"Superman," Bruce says with absolute neutrality. He's wearing the cowl. Standing in rubble. Clark is . . . not standing in rubble.
Laying in rubble. That's what Clark is doing.
Bruce is looking down at him very, very carefully, and seems . . . reserved.
Reserved for Bruce, even.
"What happened?" Clark asks, trying not to concentrate on the little seed of dread that the sight of that reservation invokes in him. He can hear the heartbeats of other League members, here and there in the wreckage of the street around them. Hear civilians and city noise. Hear Lois and Jon, distantly, and Ma and Pa, even more distant. And . . . Kara–both of her–and . . .
"We'll go with 'electrocution', but I think we can safely say just about anyone else would've been virtually incinerated," Bruce informs him, distracting Clark from his mental rundown of people he's currently worried about. "Or just exploded."
"Ah," Clark says with a grimace. Well, that explains why his head hurts so damn bad, he guesses.
At least it was him, then, and not any "anyone else"s.

dear internauts hopefully reading this post
my real name will remain anonymous but you can call me Olivia, I am a worker in the fan project @the-rainbow-neighborhood as a voice actress and an artist and I'm proud to say that this is the first job i have to finally enter this beautiful place called the animation company under the hand of a nice boss.
sadly, most of the people working in this proyect (the boss included) are rather young, some underage even, we all have passion on creating a fan serie based on welcome home, and Welcome home has a lot of LGBTQ content in it.
The KOSA laws will, instead of just censoring or regulating, ban the accounts of every user under the age of 18 from the internet to "protect" kids from dangerous content, and by dangerous content, they include LGBTQ, history of marginalized groups, mental health, sexual edication, birth control and abortion content and resources.
they will also use extremly invasive online surveillance of all internet users and with the invasive parental control they are going to use, children victims of familiar abuse won't be able to reach out for help.
Now, let's get personal, a lot of Staff in the TRN project staff is gay, trans and some of them went trough abusive family enviroments (names won't be revealed) a lot of us have sever mental issues and need help or at least venting. KOSA won't only delay the project, it will harm the staff in a personal level too!
there's nothing I can do due to not being american, but you can help, down there will be links in wich you can help to prevent KOSA from censoring freedom of expression and censoring our identities
please, keep our children safe, and by our children, we mean ALL of them, the queer kids, the mentally ill kids, the neurodivergent kids, the trans kids, the AFAB kids, the children of color. ALL
remember, censorship, wont eliminate the creeps, it will just make them less vissible

I changed colleges to study visual arts. dropped sociology after five years and being close to graduating, and yes it's as painful and humiliating as it sounds. but at this point if it swims like a duck (an artist) and quacks like a duck (an artist) the only thing left to do is to surrender to obvious destiny

Women's Solidarity at the Herb Show, lol!
Went to an herb fair yesterday, booths upon booths of people selling seeds and garden starts. There was a booth there run by this Amish family in the region, they're a well-known family but I'd never met them before.
And they sold pennyroyal starts.
Now, there are other uses for this herb, but the primary use for women is that pennyroyal is REALLY good at terminating early pregnancies. You have to use it right, and it can be pretty dangerous if you don't (Like, LETHAL. All herbal abortifacients are potentially lethal, so DO NOT.), but it's one of the best-known plants in herbal circles for this use. Several of us straight-up just grow this for the novelty of it, lol, right next to the foxgloves and henbanes.
I was kinda spacy, and when I bought it I made a crack about this being the one herb that almost no commercial herb book will write about. As soon as I said it, I realized who I was talking to and felt awful for the joke.
And then this 30yo Amish woman shoots me that smile, and winks at me. If you've ever been a woman sharing secrets that men aren't allowed to know about, you know the smile. It's universal. Women in Korea share the same smile when we laugh about mugwort.
So yeah. Thank you, super-cool Amish woman, for selling this epic little plant to me.

Of all the people who unfriended me on Facebook over Roe v. Wade being overturned, by far the most disappointing was my close friend from middle school (like, “used to talk and hang out almost every day” close friend) unfriending me then, when I went to check her profile, posting a long, public list of “FOODS AND CHEMICALS that you should TOTALLY AVOID if you’re ACCIDENTALLY PREGNANT and TOTALLY DON’T WANT to have a MISCARRIAGE, teehee! 🤭” Nothing is more sad than watching former friends mindlessly embrace pure evil. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Is it just my personal experience or women who are the loudest about 'girls support girls' 'female solidarity' are the ones most dedicated to ostracizing and mocking women who break patriarchal social norms?

It's October, so it's that time of the year to be extra suspicious of churches advertising that they have a "hell house" because that's not a haunted house, that's a conversion tactic.

Not even just The Parents now but bro1 is making this house actively hostile to life with the way everyone has to tiptoe around his maybe breakup and moodiness and like sure he's not actively aggressive but why are all my routines and habits having to be altered so he can mope and be angry and moody and sad and become an alcoholic and possibly give himself an ED because we can't just sit him down and have a normal human conversation nooo bc he's the favourite child and therefore we just have to wait and deal until he's *ready* on his own. Which has not happened in his entire 23 yrs of life. But y'know. I can keep waiting ig.
Like yes yes pot and kettle when it comes to moodiness. But I See Doctors. I take Meds. I take Responsibility for My Actions and develop Coping Skills and Apologize and Don't Take It Out on other people. I actually CARE abt people other than myself and how my actions impact them, even if they're ppl I don't like or who have hurt me before.
#also when My morning routines are altered. brain scream#but no i can just cope with active mental distress from diagnoses brain disease#so the bitchy little baby can mope and stay out all night drinking vome home and puke and then be a bitch#when he has to go to work at 6am#like ues i feel bad i liked his gf hes sad#but also. like. not to be like well hes apathetic and selfish and callous but ...#he also made a joke abt abortion at dinner yesterday bc our 16yr old cousin is expecting#and it was so awful??? she WANTS this kid???#ugh ugh ugh ugh#i have a horrible strained relationship with each of my brothers#but each one is a different flavour of bad or dysfunctional#and this one. this one. i cant even get into it.#i love my brother. i need a shovel to love my brother#my parents both complain abt their adult child younger siblings#and then like. trear bro 1 like this which will make him become an adult manchild#ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh#truly. i need to fuckin move out. i need it#ill lose free food and rent monies and free laundry and utilities and ooen backyard garden space#but oh my god the emotional toll this is taking on constantly tiptoeing peacekeeping#IM FORCED INTO LYING BY OMISSION. I HATE LYING. IT MAKES ME WANT TO DIE.#franposting#we're supposed to share a car all summer and commute together sans our father#i might just take the bus. even tho i have to leave almost an hour earlier#i don't trust him. or his moods. esp when mildly hungover at 6am. and without our father there to moderate?#this sounds horrible but im a little afraid. (plus i cant be late everyday all summer bc of him)#like. once again. fuck me. i am the ONLY responsible child and i get so much shit

Previous | Chapter Start | From the Beginning | End of Chapter 2, Part 2
Neither spoke on the way to the airport. They’d fought before, but this time, the silence had a weight to it; a muchness, a more-than-usual quality that was unfamiliar to both.
Vivi thought a lot about apologizing. She always did, she had always been inclined in that way. In twenty-one years of living, she had, at one time or another, apologized for almost everything: being early, being late, being too loud, being too quiet. Usually, she was apologizing for being herself instead of some other girl, someone prettier, someone more confident, someone who knew what to do, what to say, how to dress.
Sitting next to her husband (and there was another word that carried that same weight, that same muchness) she didn’t think about apologizing. She thought, instead, about old mistakes. What had she missed that had led her to this place and this man, to the back seat of an unmarked car and to silent, furious stranger beside her.
A/N: thank you to @ardeney-sims and @nexility-sims for proofreading for me!
11:41 AM, the day after the wedding
VIVI | [groaning] VIVI | [weakly] What time is it? JACQUES | Late. Quarter of noon. VIVI | ...fuck, the plane. JACQUES | It’s our plane, Vivi, they won’t take off without us. [amused] You’ve got plenty of time to sober up. VIVI | Mmmm, I’m just hungover. Not drunk. [door closes, sound of running water] VIVI | [snoring softly] JACQUES | [humming] [water shuts off] JACQUES | [stops humming] JACQUES | [to himself] ...what’s this? JACQUES | ... VIVI | [sighs] [bathroom door opens and closes] VIVI | Hey, while you’re up, could you bring me a glass of water? VIVI | Eurgh, my head... JACQUES | [angrily] Hey. What the fuck is this? JACQUES | When were you going to tell me you were pregnant? VIVI | ... JACQUES | Vivi, you were fucking wasted last night. JACQUES | God, Vivi — you were drinking! How could you be so irresponsible with a baby on the way? VIVI | [sighs] I didn’t tell you because...I’m not keeping it. I’ve got an appointment with my OB/GYN once we get back from San My. JACQUES | W-what? VIVI | [sighs] Oh Jacot... VIVI | Be honest with me. When was our last good day? JACQUES | ... VIVI | Why would I want to bring another kid into this mess? VIVI | I’m gonna go shower. We can talk more on the plane. JACQUES | ...it’s not mine, is it? VIVI | [gasps] VIVI | How could you even say that? JACQUES | No...it all makes sense, now. You’re hot and cold, you’re keeping secrets, and you got so hung up on those pictures, even though I didn’t do anything....You’re sleeping around, aren’t you? JACQUES | Who is he, Vivi? Do I know him? VIVI | You’re crazy. I would never — [ raised voices, muffled arguing ] CLAUDIA | ... JACQUES | ...save it, Vivi. Go get an abortion, I don’t give a shit. I just want to make one thing perfectly clear... JACQUES | ...if I ever find out who he is, I’m going to fucking kill him. VIVI | ... JACQUES | Get dressed. We’ve got a plane to catch. VIVI | [inaudibly] ...oh my god.
