Watching House MD for the first time in 2024 full SEASON 1 Review-
- I had learned from his Wiki page before I even started the show that he had a couple of divorces, but Wilson is really bad at marriage, isn't he? His wife is having company and she makes dinner. House calls once and he totally abandons those plans to meet him at a bar. Wilson lies to his wife and says he's working on christmas and then he goes to Houses apartment instead. House continuously implies that wilson is having affairs around the hospital. He's very funny, he's clever, and he can be sweet, but I would NOT want that man as a partner. That being said, whenever House and Cameron were going on a date and he goes to Cameron to tell her not to hurt House was crazy. Everyone is just so worried about Cameron getting hurt and he does NOT care about her. He's like "huh?? why would I care about you i'm here about house??"
- Cameron's crush on House hit me like a ton of bricks. Even before it was revealed that she had a crush. I thought that they were so good as friends. It seems that now at the end of the season. It's kind of been packed up? And i'm glad for that I hope they can go back to being just besties. You kind of begin to see some of the more flawed parts of Cameron in the latter half of this season, which I appreciate. Such as her need to fix things or people. It makes her feel a bit more human and not just a very angelic being.
- Chase also has a lot of flaws shown in the latter half of the season, and a lot more than Cameron. Don't get me wrong, I still love him, but he was one sidedly enemies with a ten year old girl because she was overweight? Also I picked up on a consistent habit that Chase seems to have where in general he's a pretty nice guy, but when things start to go wrong for him, he will say the most out of pocket things to patients. It's a writing quirk that showed up early in the season with the nuns and has been a constant part of his character since. Also, I made a post about this when I watched the episode. But canonically has seen a dominatrix???? More and more ragged pieces of fabric are stitching themselves together to show me a quilt of Chase.
- I hope in the future we get more focus on Foreman as a character. I would like to know everything about this man. And I know that it was a joke at the beginning, but this man really does try to tie every case back to neurology. Him stepping in to tell House not to hurt Cameron by being nice and giving her hope was nice.
- Time for Mister Gregory House himself. Noticing a pattern of him very much being good with children and having no room for idiot parents who are hurting their kids or are weary of medicine. Love to see it. He has a very distinct relationship with everyone on screen. Every person he interacts with, he interacts with the differently. He's pretty hard on Chase, especially after the Vogler incident. He is continuously hard on Foreman as well with an unhealthy dose of micro-aggression mixed in. Generally, he's hard on Chase in a fatherly way and hard on Foreman in a motherly way, if that makes any sense. He is much softer with Cameron. He and Wilson are co-dependent and at the same time can be very cruel to each other, while also supporting each other. It's very interesting to see these dynamics play out.
- Stacy is complicated. Her trying to convince House to do a treatment her husband doesn't want him to do, mirroring how Housebecame disabled was painful. I can see why she would want the treatment for them in both scenarios and I can also see why it can be selfish or wrong. She found someone that doesn't make her feel alone and is willing to forgive her, so in the end I guess she found her way to a happier life. I still think House has the right to be angry, of course and she isn't owed House's forgiveness but she's at least understandable.
Random extra thoughts and things I've noticed:
- THE KID FROM SPY KIDS WAS IN AN EPISODE??
- So was the girl from mean girls, les mis, mama mia, and Jennifer's body, can you tell I don't know peoples names?
- House has the saddest little eyes but they also pierce my soul and make me feel horrible for him, almost like I did something
- House has an array of toys all over his desk, and he plays with his cane or rubber bands all the time
- I could not STAND Vogler. I'm glad they wrapped up his arch this season because I was getting tired of him
Some context:
I'm watching the show mostly because my Twitter and Tumblr were very adamant that I do, but also because I have a running thing where I very rarely finish a show that I start. I've started several shows and finished very few of them. I started watching House on New Year's Eve The day before the first day of 2024 and plan to finish it before the first day of 2025. This is actually a big deal for me because usually I can't finish a show over 3 seasons and the farthest I've gotten is five seasons. I will be posting as I go and also doing a halfway point and a full season review of all 8 seasons.

Genuine question, do you actually like Houston or is it just your hometown?
it's a bit more nuanced than that tbh. i understand why it's losing that poll - it's an absolutely massive car-central sprawl where driving on the freeway feels like you're in mad max, it's hot and humid, there's no real seasons, and what used to be a 100 year flood is now an every other year flood. like many blue cities in the south, you're still stuck dealing with the whims of whatever republican pieces of shit that run your state come up with; i've been trying to get rid of them in texas my entire life, so every time this is used as a dunk i just feel tired. because houston is so much more than that.
it's the most diverse city in the country. there are people from everywhere, from all classes and walks of life, and they bring their culture and hopes and dreams with them, and it makes houston incredibly unique under the surface. you can get viet-cajun fusion food anywhere from a strip mall to fine dining. everyone has tamales for christmas. you can get jerk chicken from the same restaurant that you get authentic indian food. street signs are in 3 different languages, and those languages change depending on what part of town you're in. on the street i grew up on in a working class suburb, my family was the only white family - i had neighbors from the philippines and ghana, cajuns from louisiana that grew up speaking french, and a mexican family whose kids grew up my siblings' friends. my teachers in elementary and middle school were vietnamese nuns, who now get celebrated every time they go to astros games (sr. mary catherine, who throws the first pitch, was my math teacher in middle school)!
i once had my alternator die in the middle of a major intersection near downtown houston, just completely killed my car; my emergency lights wouldn't even come on it was so dead. in the hour span i was stuck there, i had 5-6 different groups of people stop and try to help me - a businessman with a suit and tie and cowboy boots, a mom with her kids in the car with her, a guy with a slab and swangas, a car full of construction workers and neither of us spoke each other's language but they helped me push my car to a parking lot anyway. i've had people help me change flat tires, jump my car, push it out of the road, and i've stopped to do all of that for people too. it's a big city, but there's a level of trust and friendliness among people in a bind there that i've never seen anywhere else i've lived. you'll never eat a meal alone, you'll never be lost. strangers will talk to you everywhere you go, especially if they can sense you're having a bad day. people are friendly and helpful and they will shatter your preconceived notions about who they are or where they're from.
houston isn't a tourist town- i get it, i can't imagine why someone would want to vacation there. and full disclosure, i moved away 5 years ago and now live in a smaller city that feels more comfortable to me in terms of scale. but i strongly believe that growing up somewhere so friendly, so proud of its diversity and so strengthened by it, so different from where the places where the rest of my extended family grew up - i don't think i'd be the same person i am now if i'd lived somewhere else. growing up in an environment where you're exposed to so many different people, so many different cultures, and they're all fundamentally your neighbors? i really believe that makes a difference and makes much more well rounded, compassionate, thoughtful citizens. i wouldn't trade the 28 years i spent there for anything.
also if you have access to watch parts unknown with anthony bourdain, he did an amazing episode on houston. even just the opening minute captures so much:

Found in my drafts from 2020 and posting now with no edits except a note at the end:
I’m rewatching Call the Midwife for the first time in years (I watched S1-S5??? as they came out), and it’s fascinating. I still love all the characters, and it’s still guaranteed to make me cry at least once an episode.
The thing that’s weird is that...the men’s stories are so much more prominent than I remembered? (I’ve watched S1 and the first Christmas special) There was so much press about how women-focused it is, and how men are peripheral, if anything. Yet just in S1 we have
- a father who may have married his wife when she was a child, and who sometimes speaks for her even though they don’t actually share a language after ~2 decades
- a pimp who continues to actively threaten a pregnant woman, and the men of the church who take her baby away
- two old men with Sad Stories, being supported by two different women who work at Nonnatus house
- multiple love interests (Jimmy, Jenny’s other old flame, Peter, and Trixie’s dates)
- an overprotective new father who makes himself too involved
- the husband of the woman with eclampsia, who Cynthia spends an episode comforting
- all the cops and judges pursuing Sister Monica Joan (even all the shopkeepers who threaten her are men)
- the boy scouts! Chummy runs the boy scouts but nobody’s running Girl Guides?
- Fred gets a whole storyline about his pigs, among his other business attempts
That’s all in just six episodes! I’m not saying any of these storylines are bad, but all of these men get prominent screentime and it’s just in such strong contrast to the early press I remember about the show. Outside of deliveries/nursing work, when do we see the women of the main cast without men on screen?
- Jenny learning all of her lessons about life with poor people and adjusting to live at Nonnatus house, via discussions with various other residents
- Gossipy and/or exhausted discussions about the patients of the week (sort of nursing work, sort of related to Jenny’s Life Lessons)
- The girls getting ready for one night out, including Sister Bernadette’s inner conflict scene in front of the mirror.
- Also the girls helping Chummy get ready for her dates with Peter.
- The nuns at their prayers, and occasionally taking care of order business
IDK how long ago I wrote this so there may have been more, but not enough to outweigh the centrality of men in the stories.

okay. so i just watched it twice, and here are my thoughts about ted lasso season 3, episode 1. don’t read if you don’t want to be spoiled:
I WAS RIGHTTTTTT ABOUT TED BEING THE FACE OF THIS SEASON I WAS RIGHTTTT I WAS RIGHTTTT. it HAS to be about his growth at the end of the day. that’s what the show’s ABOUT
love the opening on ted’s face while someone calls for the last warning for kansas city. how much do we want to guess the season will end the same way, with a settled, satisfied look on his face this time, while somebody calls “passenger lasso for kansas city”?
“amen big ben” WAHHHH. WHENEVER HENRY MIMICKS TED’S SPEECH PATTERNS IT GETS ME SOOOO
ted immediately joking about drinking alcohol with the gift from his son. hm.
“when you get home, will you give your mom a big squeeze for me and le her know i love her”? i’m not sure that’s still appropriate to say about your ex wife, ted
ted looks so jason-ish with stubble lmao.
I’M SO GLAD HE’S STILL TALKING WITH SHARON. THANK GOD HE NEEDS IT
the way his voice shakes on “hey doc… yeah, no, i’m fine.”
“until my dad remembered to come pick me up”..... he sounds a bit angry in this line….
JESUS HIS FAVORITE TEACHER GOT KILLED BEFORE HE WAS ABLE TO THANK HIM FOR TAKING CARE OF HIM?????? HOW MUCH TRAGEDY WAS IN YOUNG TED’S LIFE HOW MUCH GRIEF DID HE HAVE TO ENDURE
he still has the nate christmas photo up in his apartment, right where it was before, right next to the henry photo……..
“maybe my being here is doing more hurting than helping at this point” very reminiscent of “eventually it seemed like me being around so much was doing more harm than good
“are you seeing anyone?” “pass.” “ahh, you usually say no!” how many times has ted asked if she’s dating someone????
“you finally got off” “not yet i haven’t” GOOD FOR HER?????? GET IT QUEEN
rebecca and higgins just chilling and reading newspapers with each other wahhh i love when they’re friends
the way rebecca keeps referring to west ham as rupert….. oof. oh girl. even ted goes “ohhh boy”. it can’t not be personal for her
i love how whenever rebecca doesn’t know how to respond to something, she just goes “....... okay” with a kind of perplexed half-smile on her face. she’s done it throughout all three seasons and it’s delightful
“maybe they’re trying to motivate us” aww dani
BOTH DANI AND RICHARD IMMEDIATELY CROSSING THEMSELVES WHEN COLIN MENTIONS THE NUN ALSKFJLDKSJFD
“hey, lads! we ain’t gonna get relegated because we’re together! and together… we’ve got me!” AHAHHAA jamie being jamie…. love him forever
everyone throwing towels and stuff at jan mass when he mentions what’s statistically likely to happen LASKJFLKSDJLFKJDSLFJDL something about that is so sweet and friendlylike
beard and roy being FRIENDSSSS
love that ted still keeps the gag from s1 of calling the other coaches pet names, he says “what’s up, sweetie pie” to beard
roy having an inferiority complex by comparing himself to NATE???? that's very…… interesting. especially since nate spent all of last season trying to be roy.
nate in his little green car….
“good morning coach shelley” and he doesn’t even notice. wow…. he’s really embraced this. and then the “there he is, the wonderkid himself” “get out.” WOOF.
KJPR??? Keeley Jones PR????
ohh she’s representing Rebecca at her new company!! rebecca is a client of hers now!!
keeley in a office full of boring stiffs who don’t get her whimsy… aw keeley. don’t let them cramp your style! maybe they’ll be made sympathetic though who knows
and yet she still calls them all “poets and geniuses” even though they clearly don’t like her… keeley you ray of sunshine i adore you
when keeley just throws rebecca’s jacket on a couch and rebecca’s face is just like “uh…. ok” ASLKDFJLSDJFLKDSJFLKSD
KEELEY IMMEDIATELY BREAKING DOWN IN TEARS AS SOON AS THE OFFICE IS COVERED AWWWWWWWW KEELEYYYYYYY. seeing her crying and upset is so upsetting to me. like i see jamie in agony and i’m like YESSSSS but i see keeley upset and i also want to start sobbing
love that rebecca is there to take care of her though <3
and i’m kind of excited! i think this means we’re going to be able to see more of keeley’s internal world this season! one problem with her i’ve always had is that i feel like she’s always a bit too perfect-- she always knows the exact right thing to do, the exact right thing to say, she always gives the best advice. it sometimes felt like she was only ever fixing other peoples’ problems, not dealing with problems of her own. but it looks like she’s allowed to have problems this season!!! yay!!!
the boys chatting while training :) they’re so cute they’re little buddies i love them
roy: “what the fuck are you two talking about, we are outside.” beard: “HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE >:3” i love him
“EVERYONE RUN EXCEPT ROY LET’S GO” so sweet how he’s considerate of roy’s knee :)
“wow, rupert’s really got stuck in your head these days, huh?” “no! … i mean, yes, but…” get rebecca in some therapy 2k23 on god rebecca we can NOT end the season without you having seen a therapist
barbara lady trying to crush keeley’s whimsy :(((((((
“thank you for the advice” “thank you for your bosom” “anytime” I LOVEEEE TWO FRIENDSSSSS
“this right here is the dum dum line” nate what are you, 5?
“five more minutes of this, then just run them ‘till they drop” WOOF… NOT THE BEST TACTIC TO GET THE TEAM ON YOUR SIDE
when he turns around and the secretary lady is gone and nate does his trademark little “oh my god…..” HE’S STILL THE SAME PERSON. even with all the differences in his life and his personality now he still has that little “oh my god….” think he’s had since the very first season
rupert wearing the all black suit… yes nate was trying to emulate roy with the black suit last season, but maybe he was also trying to emulate rupert???
oooof when rupert slaps the newspaper as he’s laughing, nate flinches and his smile suddenly disappears….. ooooooof oooooof
“they didn’t know what they had letting you go. nathan shelley, you are a killer” MANIPULATION MANIPULATION
nate’s face on “.....i can move it.” like he’s expected to get yelled at…. oof
not lost on me that rupert always calls him “nathan” whereas ted always called him “nate”
so good to finally see those spoilers from a YEAR AGO of the team out and about in those new kits out in london come to fruition… it’s been soooo long. those were the first s3 spoilers we ever got. wonderful
rebecca rushing to see the press conference…. baby you have to learn how to not care
“i’ve had this dry cleaned now six time. can’t believe she wears stuff like this on her eyes”
higgins’ choking sound… love that he still has that
“aint much scarier out there than a creepy clown, right?” then it immediately cuts to rupert HA
jamie with his shirt over his nose is so cute
THE WHOLE TEAM CONGRATULATING BEARD ON GETTING IT RIGHT… SO CUTE
nate’s still harping on the wonder kid thing… dang
NATE PANIC ATTACK????? god just like ted’s…… and then the spit aND THE WAY HE WIPES HIS EYE RIGHT AFTER. NATE YOU MAKE ME WEEP BUDDY
typical nate. feels threatened and so goes on the counterattack. same as jamie did back in s1. best way to get them to stop poking fun at you is to beat them to the punch and lash out at them first.
cutting between the press conference and the boys in the sewer… interesting interesting
jamie’s little “wtf?” hand after roy yells ASLKDFJLSJFLDKSJF
“coach?” “yeah, jamie.” “we’re surrounded by poopeh.” WAHHHHHH I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. MY SON
so many hurt feelings…. so much hurt…. by ted, by the team, by rebecca and higgins…. they all knew nate….. so much hurt here… god
beard WOULD like kenneth
“hey, hey, lads, lads! remember, it’s just poopeh. let it flow.” YESSSSS JAMIE TAKING ON THE TED ROLE AND CONSOLING THE TEAM YESSSSS BABY UR A LEADER ON THE TEAM NOW I’M SO PROUD OF U.
when dani says “clever, jamie, muy intellegento, jamie!” I LOVE HOW MUCH DANI LOVES HIM
also the way ted was ready to step in but both beard and roy stopped him because they knew it was time to let someone on the team reinterpret ted’s philosophy… yesssss
when rebecca calls him “coach lasso” instead of ted…..
“i am begging you. please. fight back.” but then later ted ignores that advice and does his charm and disarm that he usually goes with, and keeley sends rebecca that text “way to let ted be ted!” really reaffirms that rebecca was in the wrong there, that she had to trust how ted was going to handle it
ted going full self-deprecating in the face of nate’s insults is so perfect too. like yes, he still compliments nate, never says a bad word about him, refuses to stoop to his level. but it endears him to the public-- and, crucially, it also IS kind of a way to backhandedly get at nate. it’s a way for ted to come off looking more clever and quick-witted and smart, at the end of the day. it’s a way for him to win this battle without ever putting up a fight.
interesting too how it calls back to the advice he gives rebecca in s1 at the gala-- “just a trick of the trade, make fun of yourself, right off the bat. folks will love that.” here he’s employing his own advice. making fun of himself to endear himself to the public.
“i’ve had more psychotic episodes than twin peaks” SO interesting to me that he’s able to so freely talk about the panic attacks and make fun of himself for it here… very very interesting. not sure how i feel about that
the way nathan’s father is still upset about him swearing??? like he’s 14 or something???? his parents infantilize him SO MUCH…. i’m sure that’s where a lot of his issues regarding respect ultimately stem from
buying nate the new car… something to be said here about status and class, but i’m not smart enough to say it.
“it’s a car” and nate laughs at first because he thinks she’s kidding, but then he’s like “oh wait…. oh.”
OKAY. LOOK. I KNOW IT’S BAD FOR HIS DEVELOPMENT AS A PERSON. BUT. THAT CAR SEQUENCE WAS SICK AS HELL.
roy is looking at keeley while keeley looks down at her phone… then she puts down her phone and looks at him, and he immediately looks down at his drink…. oof.
keeley’s jacket is so spectacular. not the point but i love it
“we’re going on a break” vs. “we broke up”... ooooof
“because…. we thought you’d wanna hang out with me sometimes” AH. KEELEY SOUNDS SO INSECURE ON THIS LINE. BABEEEEEE
roy’s whole face journey before he says “we’re too busy.” is… oof. got me in my feels
keeley trying to comfort roy about his anxiety about not being a good enough coach, but then she has to stop himself…. babe you can’t do that anymore. it’s not your place. he’s not yours like that anymore.
if i had to rank these people in order of how well they’re handling this interaction, it would be: phoebe, keeley, roy. roy’s really not doing much of the legwork here. and phoebe is astounding in how she’s managing to smooth out their feelings, instead of the other way around. i NEED to meet her mom
“i think you’re being stupid” not messing around phoebe, i like it
beard never gives his opinion when ted expresses how he’s not sure why they’re still here.. unsure what that means. he thinks they should go home but doesn’t want to mess with ted’s headspace even more? he thinks ted should figure this one out himself and doesn’t want to influence him? he’s bothered by ted’s unquestioning use of “we” (“wonder why we’re still here.”) when maybe what beard wants is different from what ted wants? could be any of the above. i’m not sure
putting lego nate next to lego ted….. weeping sobbing crying
“who’s jake?” “mommy’s friend.” “..........great…..” AHHHHHHHHHH. poor ted is going throughhhhh ittttttttt

So first off screw David Zaslav once again for ruining HBO Max. Instead of watching so much needed Christmas movies. I have to rush and binge The Nevers because not only has it been canceled but its being removed from HBO Max. Like seriously I've watched the first 2 episodes so far and I'm in love with this show. It was doing well and had a season 2 renewal for him to just pull it makes no sense. He's not making any sacrifices for Discovery. I swear I'm going to get through my watchlist and cancel my subscription before HBO Max merges with Discovery Plus. David Zaslav has made it clear he doesn't care for scripted content, and the only shows surviving are ones linked to major IP like House of Dragon. I have no interest in watching a bunch of reality shows.
On to Netflix
Warrior Nun deserved better it deserved a season third and final season at least.

For the anon who compared it to First Kill . It’s not really a good comparison since First Kill for some bizzare reason rebooted its own world building drastically halfway through the season and this combined with the general low quality turned a lot of people off while WN is very consistent. And Netflix has a lot of the factors but the most important is number of viewers and completion rates . People just turned off FK but most finish WN because Simon made a very compelling and sensible season
I agree with you, i'm the perfect example of that kind of viewer, I will watch anything, trash and not trash, but first kill??? I barely finished the first episode, i'm not even sure i finished it actually i don't remebere anything. While warrior nun has something for everything, and that's why it got a second season despite only 5 of us watching here. Now we just gotta hope even more people watched it... i feel like we will only know more in january (maybe christmas if it's good news?)

@minikate--24-05 sorry for taking so long to reply! I was actually thinking about what I liked the most about s1-3 and I still can't choose one thing. I think I loved it as a whole? the way the first season set up the characters really well without going too deep until the finale when we learn house's backstory. and then s2-3 build up on that strong foundation and we watch the characters grow individually and together. I also loved the simplicity of it, I mean ofc the medical cases and house himself are very extra but we keep watching for the interactions between the characters. the central theme is the bonds between people. and not just the main cast but also with the patients. the first episode that made me tear up a little and go "wow what a good show" was the christmas ep in s1. when we learn that chase was in seminary school and he has this moment with the nun, it was just very touching and a nice way of showing another side of him. every episode I wondered who was going to connect with the patient this time.
i'm already in the middle of s4 and while i'm very much enjoying it, it definitely isn't the same. obviously i'm biased because my favourite characters are pretty much guest stars now, but i also feel the simplicity element is missing sometimes. like house was literally called by the CIA? and most of the patients are pretty forgettable. again i'm sure they did their best because they had to change the formula somehow, and it's still very good but s1-3 had sth special imo.

Yes
I forgot other people also like this show I bring up at random moments
It’s got episodes on literally every subject so I find myself making connections to it very often lmao
Idk if the writers ran out of ideas or anything (yes) but who makes episodes about zombies and vampires in the early 20th century (and try to justify it within the time period) unless you've exhausted every other avenue-
(The zombies: a guy had been testing lobotomies on prisoners and marketing it as a solution to society (basically eugenics aka not good (like human rights violations not good)))
(The vampire: a guy was,, basically grooming schoolgirls? And making them give blood to his son who had [a blood illness] (it’s been a while I don’t remember the specifics))
I swear I might make a list of all the random subjects they chose for each episode (golfing, stamp collectors, cricket, football (soccer), the first planes, underwater trains, early electricity, and nuns, to name a few- also that Christmas special that was,,, smth lmao- (themes: the magic of Xmas or smth and also a mythical creature Bigfoot situation lmao- plus that one scene at the end where the evil capitalist man sees children asking him to be generous and suddenly decides that, - even though for the whole movie this hasn’t touched him in any way and without any character development shown that would explain such a change, - he wants to actually be nice to the kids and ✨restores the magic of Christmas✨ or something)
Lmao it’s something
It’s kind of bad but I say this affectionately
(Also if you think im wrong about any of this I would be curious to know why so feel free to disagree and to tell me so 👍 + it’s been a while since I’ve watched the episodes I’m mentioning so I could be remembering things wrong- if I’ve misconstrued stuff, also feel free to tell me 👍👍)
(I wrote a rly long text post then my phone died. Just learned drafts are a thing (my noob is showing) but I didn’t make one so I’m retyping what I remember T-T)
TL;DR: Murdoch Mysteries whack
Ok bye now thanks for reading hope you had/are having a nice day :P

After years of seeing “call the midwife” clips on the internet. I have started watching it. I was unprepared for the regular episode to Christmas episode ratio, there are like 8 episodes per season and one of them is a Christmas special every time.
I was also not prepared for the reality (it’s based on memoirs, but I didn’t know that going in) there are episodes that talk about infant death, but also a man being arrested for being gay and forced to take estrogen for treatment (I do not understand the logic behind that) and then there is a lesbian couple that comes out of nowhere and then is separated and then reunited. But also just random midwives dating preachers, which is not that weird but understanding the difference between Anglican nuns and catholic nuns was not really something I wanted to learn about.

MARY: SERIES ONE
When King Henry VIII announces his daughter unable to inherit the crown of England, Princess Mary Tudor and her friends at court rebel and conspire against him.
An imagined six episode psychological drama series, focusing on Princess Mary Tudor and the intrigues, secrets and lies of Henry VIII’s court...
THE KING’S PEARL
Princess Mary Tudor, Princess of Wales and heir to the throne of England, is at her court in the Welsh Marches. Rhys ap Gruffydd kneels in irons before her; he has been arrested for inciting rebellion and is on the way to the Tower of London. Rhys petitions Mary for help in getting his grandfather’s lands and titles restored to him, as they are his by right and not her stewards, who has been gifted them by the king. Rhys says surely Mary knows what it is like to have an inheritance threatened. Mary promises to help him when she returns to court. Rhys thanks his princess, stating that though his wife is related to the king’s mistress, Anne Boleyn will never be Rhys’ queen.
Mary returns to court for Christmas. All along the streets nobles and peasants alike cheer for their princess before she is welcomed lovingly by her parents King Henry VIII and Queen Katherine of Aragon.
There is a grand feast; Mary reunites with her father’s cousin Henry Courtenay and his wife Gertrude, one of Katherine’s ladies. She dances with the courtier Nicholas Carew while her parents watch proudly.
Mary petitions her father to release Rhys from imprisonment in the Tower. The king, delighted to have his pearl back, agrees, but refuses to grant him his grandfather’s lands and titles. The pair decide to go riding together.
On their return, Gertrude escorts Mary to see her mother. She tells Mary her father’s mistress, Anne Boleyn, has just arrived back at court. Katherine introduces Mary to Eustace Chapuys, ambassador to Mary’s cousin Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. Chapuys promises he will do his best to help her and her mother. Katherine and Chapuys reveal Pope Clement has forbidden the king from marrying Anne, threatening him with excommunication from the church if he does.
After Mass, where the royal family pray together, a freed Rhys seeks out Mary. He thanks her for his release and attempting to get his inheritance back.
Mary goes to her father’s chambers, where Thomas Cromwell introduces himself as King Henry’s new minister. Mary asks where her father is. When Cromwell replies he is with Anne Boleyn, Mary leaves for the sanctuary of her mother’s rooms.
Henry Courtenay arrives from parliament, telling Katherine, Mary and Gertrude that the king has now declared himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England. Gertrude tells them she heard of a nun in Kent who can predict the future. Katherine warns her not to do anything foolish.
On Saint David’s Day, the patron saint of Wales, Mary is given a Welsh leek by the king’s gentlemen pensioners in a grand ceremony. She is watched by a crowd of courtiers and Chapuys, who compliments her. They talk for a while before she leaves.
Exiting, Mary comes across Anne Boleyn. They glare at each other before Anne reluctantly sinks into a curtsey. Mary ignores her.
Mary plays the virginals for her parents. Despite their praise, there is obvious tension between the pair.
At nightfall Mary and her father talk. Mary is confused how he has declared himself the head of a church that doesn’t exist. Henry says she is clever; one day his pearl will understand. After he has left, Mary tells her governess, Margaret Pole, that she doesn’t think she will ever understand.
Katherine worries when Margaret wakes her in the night to inform her Mary is ill. Gertrude brings up the Nun of Kent again, but Maria Willoughby and Jane Seymour shush her. Katherine goes to help Margaret care for Mary. As Mary continues to vomit, Katherine strokes her daughter’s hair, clutching her necklace which she believes contains a piece of the True Cross. She prays her daughter will get better, comforting her with old stories of her and King Henry when they were younger.
In the morning a recovered Mary wakes to six luxurious new dresses, a gift from her father. She immediately puts one on.
At breakfast, the queen is sat at the table alone. The king left them earlier in the morning to go on summer progress with Anne Boleyn, forcing most of the courtiers to go with them, including the Courtenay’s. Katherine smiles and tells Mary they can still have a good time, just the two of them and their households.
Reginald, the son of Margaret, is sent money by the king to study in Padua. Katherine and Margaret are hopeful Reginald will convince King Henry to recant his decision to break from Rome and marry a heretic. Reginald promises he will. Mary hugs her cousin goodbye, wishing him well.
At court, Chapuys watches on with Nicholas Carew and an incensed Gertrude and Henry as Anne Boleyn takes the queen’s role at a feast. While talking, Rhys Gruffydd is publicly re-arrested for encouraging Wales to rebel against the king, and supposedly taking the title of Prince of Wales. The group disbelieve this after what Mary did for him.
Katherine hears from Maria that Rhys has been beheaded, but she is determined to protect her daughter and keeps the news a secret.
Mary and Katherine go hawking, but on their return are sent orders to separate. Katherine promises she will see Mary soon, encouraging her to stay strong. Any bastard born of Anne Boleyn will never rule; Mary is the heir and future queen of England.
 PRINCESS OF WALES
Mary and her tutor Richard Featherstone are having a Latin lesson on Utopia by Sir Thomas More. In the book women are encouraged to fight in battle; Mary tells the priest she would if she could.
Mary is walking in the fields with her ladies, Susan Clarencius and Anne Hussey, and her cousin Margaret Douglas. Her and Margaret’s cousin Frances Brandon has recently married Henry Grey. Mary is betrothed to the French Dauphin, but she has heard no news lately of a marriage... she is surprised to come across her father, riding with Nicholas. He asks how she is and Mary replies she is well, but missing her mother now she has seen him. The king is going to Calais with Anne Boleyn, now the marquess of Pembroke, but promises to see her more often when he returns.
Gertrude sees the Nun of Kent in disguise, switching clothes with her maid. Amazed at her trance, she invites the woman, Elizabeth Barton, to her house.
Mary is having her breakfast served by her friend Henry Jerningham when she is informed by her chamberlain that her father has, with the blessing of the new Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, married Anne Boleyn. John Hussey asks for a verbal response to the news for the king, but Mary ignores him entirely, continuing to talk with Henry and her ladies. Uncomfortable, he carries on with his orders; Mary is forbidden from writing to her mother and he must take Mary’s jewels. Margaret refuses to give them up to John unless she has a direct order from the king.
Gertrude welcomes Elizabeth warmly, asking about her prophecies. The nun says there may be war now the king has married Anne Boleyn; Gertrude asks her to pray her husband will remain safe. It grieves him that men of noble blood are being dismissed from the privy chamber, with the king ruled by Cromwell who is the son of a blacksmith.
That night, Gertrude tells Henry about the nun’s visit, telling him the king will flee the realm one day. Henry is horrified at her listening to the prophecies, potentially earning the wrath of his cousin when he finds out. He demands she tell the king.
Mary and Margaret Douglas are informed by Margaret that their aunt Mary has died. The pair worry over Frances, but Margaret tells them she has a husband to comfort her now. Mary fears the French accepting Anne Boleyn as queen means her betrothal will be void. The three are interrupted by Mary’s servant Randall Dodd, who delivers a letter passed on by her mother’s servant Anthony. Katherine writes she has “heard such tidings today that I do perceive if it be true, the time is come that Almighty God will prove you; and I am very glad of it, for I trust He doth handle you with a good love [...] But one thing I especially desire you, for the love that you do owe unto God and unto me, to keep your heart with a chaste mind, and your body from all ill and wanton company, not thinking or desiring any husband for Christ’s passion; neither determine yourself to any manner of living till this troublesome time be past.”
Shortly after there is an official command from King Henry to take Mary’s jewels. Her personal arms are stripped from her and her household is to be reduced, with some servants, including Randall Dodd, sent to wait on her new sister Elizabeth, whose christening John Hussey must attend.
King Henry confronts Gertrude, informing her that he knows she has visited the Nun of Kent. She petitions King Henry to forgive her, blaming her womanly foolishness. He does, and orders his cousin to as well. To show his goodwill towards her, Gertrude is bestowed the honour of becoming Princess Elizabeth’s godmother, but an annoyed Gertrude sees it as an insult.
Mary is playing a card game with her ladies and Henry Jerningham when John returns from the christening and tells Mary she is longer a princess. Mary refuses to accept it and writes to her father, believing he was “not privy to it, not doubting but you take me for your lawful daughter, born in true matrimony.”
In response to her letter the Duke of Norfolk comes to dissemble all her household; Mary is to go to Hatfield to serve her sister Elizabeth, the Princess of Wales. Mary says that title belongs to her by right, and no one else.
Mary is only allowed to take one lady in waiting with her and chooses Susan. Her cousin Margaret Douglas is to serve the new queen. Margaret offers to serve Mary at her own expense, but Norfolk refuses. Mary has an emotional goodbye with her staff. Margaret urges her to remember her grandmother had been declared a bastard before becoming queen of England.
On the way to Hatfield, one of the men escorting Mary whispers she must hold firm, for the sake of England.
Arriving, Norfolk asks if she will pay her respects to the Princess of Wales. Mary replies she knows of no other princess in England except herself. The daughter of the marquess of Pembroke has no such title - but if her father acknowledges her as his own, she will call her sister as she calls Henry Fitzroy brother.
As he leaves, Norfolk asks if can take a message to the king. Mary says to tell him his daughter, the Princess of Wales, begs for his blessing. When Norfolk refuses, Mary tells him curtly he might leave it then, and to go away and leave her alone. She retires to her bedchamber to cry.
UNBRIDLED BLOOD
Mary refuses to pay court to Elizabeth unless made to by force. When walking, she is always far in front or far behind the newborn, never at her side. She eats in her own rooms with food Susan steals from the kitchens, avoiding the public table. She has outgrown the ornate dresses her father gave her.
An outraged Gertrude shows Chapuys the letter she has received from the king, telling his subjects that they ought to thank God for giving them a lawful heir. Chapuys reveals he has already sent a Latin declaration for Katherine to sign and pass along to her daughter.
The king arrives to visit his youngest daughter. Mary is desperate to see her father, but is visited by Norfolk and Cromwell. They urge her to renounce her title, but Mary says it is labour wasted to press her; they are deceived if they think bad treatment, rudeness, or even the chance of death would make her change her determination. She asks to see her father and kiss his hand, but is refused. When they leave, she runs to the terrace at the top of the house and kneels in mercy. The king bows and doffs his cap, as do the men with him, before leaving.
The Oath of Supremacy and 1534 Act of Succession are both implemented, making Henry VIII Head of the Church of England, and Elizabeth and any other children of Anne Boleyn his heirs. The Courtenay’s are annoyed as queen Anne flaunts her belly; she is pregnant again.
Mary receives a letter from her mother, which comforts and encourages her, along with the Latin declaration Chapuys spoke of that denies her illegitimacy. She signs it and Susan smuggles it out of Hatfield back to Chapuys.
John Hussey and his wife Anne are returning home now Mary’s household has been dissolved, but before they go John talks with the Courtenay’s and Chapuys about the possibility of the emperor invading in support of his cousin’s rights. Chapuys says he is trying hard to convince his master. Henry says he wishes he had the opportunity to shed blood in the service of Katherine and Mary. John replies he could easily rise the north of England to help Princess Mary, and “the insurrection of the people would be joined immediately by the nobility and the clergy”. Gertrude reminds them of the prophecies of the Nun of Kent; perhaps there will be war over this...
When moving households, Mary refuses to share a litter with Elizabeth and is forcibly put in by guards. Roughly manhandled, she shouts a public protest to some peasants who salute and cheer her as princess. Her new caretaker, Anne Shelton, warns Mary her niece queen Anne has ordered her to box Mary’s ears as a cursed bastard when she uses the title of Princess.
After Gertrude informs him of Mary’s abuse, Nicholas pays the king’s fool to insult queen Anne and princess Elizabeth. The king is furious, banishing the jester from court, but Nicholas shelters him in his own home.
A badly bruised Mary hears of Nicholas’ actions and sends a letter of thanks to him via Susan. Shelton summons Mary to visit her, questioning why she has received a letter from Elizabeth Carew, Nicholas’ wife. Elizabeth urges her to submit to the king for the passion of Christ, otherwise she will be undone. Mary pleads ignorance and throws the letter in the fireplace.
As they watch queen Anne and her uncle Norfolk prepare to visit Elizabeth, Jane Seymour tells the Courtenay’s that the queen has had a miscarriage. They fear how she will treat Mary.
As punishment for the litter incident, Norfolk takes Mary’s remaining jewels. He mocks a brooch from her childhood spelling out the Emperor. Mary is furious, even more so when Anne visits her, urging her to honour her as queen and she will reconcile her to her father. Mary says she knows of no queen of England but her mother - but if her father’s mistress would intercede on her behalf, she would be much obliged. An enraged Anne storms out, swearing to bring down her unbridled Spanish blood.
Shelton tells Mary if she were the king she would kick her out of the house for disobedience, and that the king said she will lose her head for breaking the law and not renouncing her title. Seeing Richard Featherstone preparing to leave in the retinue of queen Anne, a quick witted Mary asks him if she can practise her Latin. The people around them do not understand as she asks if the rumours are true and she is to be killed. Richard is shocked, saying it is not good Latin before leaving with the rest of Anne’s entourage. Returning to London, he immediately informs Chapuys of the danger Mary is in. The ambassador is determined to find a way to see her.
The Nun of Kent is publicly executed, with her head put on a spike on London Bridge. After, the king tells Henry the trust his daughter has in the emperor makes her obstinate, but he fears no one if his vassals stay loyal. He warns his cousin not to trip lest he lose his head.
WORST ENEMY IN THE WORLD
After she was forced into a litter, Mary asks to ride on her horse when moving households. As soon as she is mounted, she races ahead of her sister’s litter, riding across the countryside to the waiting river barge. Exhilarated by the freedom of her ride, she beats the rest of the household there and takes the place of honour. On the riverbank, Chapuys watches on as Mary sails past. They smile at each other, reassured.
Shelton wonders how the ambassador knew they would be there. Suspecting Susan of sending messages in and out of the household, she dismisses Mary’s last lady. Mary is completely alone.
Months have passed; it is now winter. King Henry remains furious at his daughter’s continued defiance, telling his cousin Mary will be an example to show that no one ought to disobey the laws; at the beginning of his reign he was as gentle as a lamb, and by the end he will be worse than a lion. Henry tells his wife.
Gertrude disguises herself to visit Chapuys, saying after the next parliament Mary and Katherine will die. She swears it is as true as the Gospel. Gertrude is adamant they must do something to help save their princess. Chapuys says Katherine spoke to him of Mary marrying Reginald Pole and uniting their claims to the throne. The emperor is busy taking Tunis, but Chapuys believes only a small army sent by Charles V with Reginald amongst the troops would be enough to make people declare for Mary. Gertrude pledges the support of her relatives, but says they need a quicker solution.
Mary is no longer allowed to eat in her room, but she refuses to eat at the main table and submit to a lower rank then her sister Elizabeth, now a toddler at the head of the table. She is slowly starving.
After seeing the king talking with Jane Seymour, Gertrude has an idea. She tries to convince Jane to attract the king’s attentions in the hope of getting better treatment for Mary but a haughty Jane refuses.
Mary is constantly belittled by servants, who say the world will be at peace when they are discharged of the pain and trouble she gives them. She is incensed to hear the French ambassadors are to visit Elizabeth in the hopes of a betrothal. She declares she is the Dauphin’s future wife, not her bastard sister. Shelton orders her to her room, and when Mary refuses she is locked in by force.
The next morning, a weak Mary discovers she has started her period. Disoriented, she calls out for her mother and Margaret. While getting up, she collapses.
Shelton weeps, fearing people will think she has poisoned Mary. She tells a bedridden Mary the king will not see her until she admits to being a bastard. He believes she is his worst enemy in the world. Mary sobs but refuses to give in, saying God has not blinded her to confess her father and mother had lived in adultery and made her a bastard.
Chapuys talks to Cromwell and then the king, trying to convince them to let Katherine tend to her daughter. Henry refuses; if mother and daughter are together, Katherine might “raise a number of men and make war, as boldly as did queen Isabella her mother.” He also refuses to send Margaret Pole, who Chapuys calls Mary’s second mother, as she is a fool of no experience. If Mary had been in her care she would have died, but Shelton is an expert in female complaints.
After queen Anne shows no sympathy for a grievously ill Mary, Jane agrees to help Gertrude.
Mary is examined by a doctor. She fainted due to her heavy period, in addition to not eating or drinking enough. She is suffering from sorrow. The doctor orders her to eat more and recommends being moved closer to her mother to improve her spirits. Mary knows it will never happen.
Shelton reveals Sir Thomas More and several monks have been executed for refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy, and Richard Featherstone is now imprisoned in the Tower. She tells Mary to take warning by their fate. Servants openly desire her death, especially now the queen is pregnant again with what is sure to be a son. Mary notices her old servant Randall Dodd does not join in their bullying. Cornering him in private, she convinces him to deliver a letter to Chapuys.
Gertrude leads Jane to Nicholas, and the pair coach her on how to act. Nicholas tell Jane she must by no means comply with any of the King's wishes, except marriage.
Mary watches out of the window as armed guards are stationed at the gates. Randall walks through them, carrying a letter for Charles V urging the emperor to invade. Mary tells him “In the name of the Queen, my mother, and mine, for the honour of God take this matter in hand, and provide a remedy for the affairs of this country; begging you in the meantime not to forget to solicit permission for me to live with my mother.”
MONSTER IN NATURE
Chapuys visits a mortally ill Katherine. She worries over her daughter, but he promises to look after her. After Maria Willoughby arrives she is no longer alone and begs Chapuys to go and protect Mary.
Mary is summoned to see Shelton, who informs her of her mother’s death. She is devastated. Shelton implores her to submit, saying she will not receive the necklace her mother left her in her will. Mary replies she would rather die a hundred times than change her opinion, before going to her bedchamber to cry.
Randall gives a letter to Mary from Chapuys, making plans for her to escape England. The emperor cannot spare any troops, but there is a ship waiting 40 miles away if she can get there. Chapuys says he will write with a plan soon but Mary is convinced she must go at once lest she be killed.
Chapuys holds a dinner party with the Courtenay’s, Nicholas and Jane. Nicholas has been inducted into the Order of the Garter over George Boleyn. They discuss queen Anne having a quarrel with Cromwell, and rumours of the king wanting a new wife. Gertrude advises Jane to tell the king his subjects hate his marriage, and no one considers it legitimate. A messenger arrives for Jane from the king, with a letter and a purse of money. All watch on with approval as Jane sends it back, saying she can only accept a gift of money from the king when he makes her an honourable match. Chapuys hopes the progress of their scheme will mean Mary will not need to flee - he tells them “she is so eager to escape from all her troubles and dangers that if he were to advise her to cross the Channel in a sieve she would do it.”
In turmoil, a grieving Mary takes matters into her own hands. While playing with Elizabeth she tests the strength of the garden gate, noting where Shelton’s window looks out. Returning to the house, she tells the doctor she can’t sleep. He says he will get her some pills to help.
On the same day Katherine is buried, queen Anne has a miscarriage. The king tells Henry he has been seduced by witchcraft into his marriage, which is null because God has not granted him a son.
Mary laces some wine with the sleeping pills, and prepares to give it to Shelton and her maids. Only a letter from Nicholas delivered by Randall dissuades her. He begs her to “be of good cheer, for shortly the opposite party will put water in their wine as the King is already sick and tired of the concubine as could be.” Mary replies telling them to do everything possible to remove the mistress.
At queen Anne’s trial for adultery against the king, Henry votes guilty. He, Gertrude, Nicholas and Chapuys watch on as Anne is beheaded and Jane marries the king.
Mary is astonished to receive a visit from her old lady, Anne Hussey. They have returned from the north as John has to attend parliament, where Elizabeth will be declared a bastard now queen Anne is dead. While talking to Mary, Anne calls for a drink for the princess, and is arrested. Mary is in shock and writes a letter to her father, hoping to reconcile with him now her enemy is dead.
After being presented as the new queen, Jane tells the Courtenay’s, Nicholas and Chapuys that Henry has received his daughter’s letter but is not happy. She promises to help Mary, and Chapuys christens her the peacemaker.
Margaret Pole returns to court, attracting hundreds of people on the way who think Mary is with her. She carries a scathing letter from her son Reginald. King Henry is outraged that Reginald accuses him of tearing true defenders of religion to pieces, as well as likening him to the tyrant emperor Nero.
A group of nobles headed by Norfolk arrive to harass Mary into signing the acts, calling her a monster of nature and a traitress for continuing to defy her father. When she argues with them they say if she were their daughter they would beat her to death, or bash her head against a wall until it was a soft as a boiled apple.
Mary is locked in her bedchamber and not allowed to talk to anyone. She is to be watched over day and night. Hours pass and she refuses to back down. The guards are changed - this time Randall is on duty. Mary creates a distraction for the other guard and passes a scribbled letter to Randall for Chapuys.
Jane pleads for mercy, but the king calls her a fool for interfering; she ought to think of the children they will have together and not any others. King Henry swears that not only will Mary suffer, but also his cousin, Cromwell and others.
Anne is interrogated in the Tower for calling Mary a princess, but she insists it was merely due to habit. Henry is kicked off the privy council, and Nicholas is questioned about his relationship with Mary. Legal papers are drawn up to put Mary on trial for treason.
Randall returns, detailing what has happened to her friends and giving Mary a letter from Chapuys. Chapuys points out she now has a better opportunity of becoming heir to the crown than when Anne Boleyn was alive. He urges her to save her life for the tranquillity of the kingdom, and comforts her with the knowledge that “God looks more into the intentions than into the deeds of men.”
Fearing for her and her friends lives, a broken Mary finally submits to her father and signs the document before her without reading the contents.
GRACE
Mary lies awake in the night crying before being disturbed by a knock at the door - Susan has returned. She is to resume her duties as the king is riding to see Mary.
A nervous Mary sees her father for the first time in years, along with his new wife Jane who gives her a diamond. King Henry says he regrets their long separation, giving Mary some money and the necklace Katherine left her daughter in her will. He promises she can soon return to court.
Freed from the Tower, Anne returns north with her husband John, where the people mutter about the king being ruled by evil ministers who have closed the monasteries and forced Princess Mary to sign acts labelling her a bastard.
Mary returns to court, where the king pats Jane’s stomach, insinuating she is with child. He tells Mary some of his councillors were desirous of her death and she swoons in fear, but her father assures her all will be well now. She sits beside the queen at the high table while Gertrude serves them.
Cromwell welcomes Mary back, congratulating her on finally signing the acts and calling her “the most obstinate woman that ever was.”
Mary reunites with Henry Jerningham and Margaret Pole, along with Margaret’s sons Henry and Geoffrey. She tells Mary Reginald, who has just been made a cardinal, will not stop supporting her cause abroad.
Mary thanks Nicholas, Henry, Gertrude and Chapuys for their help. She begs the ambassador to get her absolution from the Pope for signing the acts under duress. Seeing them talk, King Henry tells his daughter he hates dissemblers. There is talk of an uprising in the north where people believe her able to inherit after him. He forces her to write to the pope, the emperor and his family confirming she sees herself as a bastard.
In Lincolnshire rebels threaten to burn the Hussey’s house down. Anne promises her husband will join them. John calls her a fool to make such a promise; Anne argues he wanted to rise the north for princess Mary and the true faith. John says that was with the emperor’s help and before she submitted to the king. He writes to him protesting his innocence in the affair.
At court the king is enraged at the rebels, tearing up John’s letter. Jane goes on her knees and petitions him to reopen the monasteries, but is rebuffed by the king who tells her not to meddle. He talks about the rebellion with Mary, making sure to mention her old chamberlain’s letter, and the vast expense of the army he is sending to suppress it.
Henry is sent north at the head of the army to prove his loyalty. Gertrude worries over his safety, remembering the Nun of Kent’s prophecies of war. Courtier Edward Neville asks Gertrude if she is merry and she replies "How can I be merry? My lord is gone to battle." He tells her not to fear this one or the second battle, but beware the third. She warns him prophecies will turn him to displeasure one day.
Anne gives the rebels food, wine and money, encouraging them further. As the army approaches and rebels still camp outside his house, John flees.
A terrified Jane tells Mary she was mistaken about being with child. Mary reassures her, thanking her new mother for all her help. When he hears, King Henry says he will clearly have no children by his wife, and that if he will have no son to succeed him he hopes for a grandson.
Henry meets up with John. He pleads innocence, and joins him to deliver an invitation to the rebel leader, lawyer Robert Aske. At the king’s request he is to attend court for Christmas.
At court Aske and Mary are kept separated. The king questions Aske on the rebels demands. They want the monasteries to reopen, and see no reason why Mary could not be queen. People think the king’s divorce made by Thomas Cranmer was not legal and “Lady Mary ought to be favoured for her great virtues [...] for she is marvellously beloved by the whole people.” He worries with her being ruled illegitimate the emperor has a reason to wage war against the realm. The king tells him he has nothing to fear from the emperor.
Mary asks Chapuys to distract the king while Gertrude takes her to Robert Aske. Chapuys talks with King Henry about Prince Luis of Portugal being a possible husband for Mary now the French Dauphin has died.
In secret, Aske tells Mary she will always be the Princess of Wales and heir, no matter what the king decrees, as the law deems her legitimate. The people of England look to her for hope in such faithless times.
She keeps his words close to her heart as Aske and John Hussey are beheaded for treason. The king says their bodies are to be sent back north as a message for all those against his rule. Mary approves, and King Henry delights at his pearl finally understanding his authority.
A traumatised Mary stares at the bloodstained scaffold, silently vowing to avenge the deaths of her loving supporters.

(I watched the entire series 3 in one night so here’s a running commentary of my thoughts. Likes/dislikes, bits I screamed/laughed/cried, details I noticed. Basically just a thought train from yours truly :P not that anyone’s interested - mostly just for my own analysis this
BUT Please come hit up my inbox with responses to episodes etc, I’ve had a few already that I’m in the process of answering so yeah lets chat :D)
Opening with Humphrey backstory is a bold move especially if people are just catching it and haven’t seen the show before
Oooohhhhhh documentary!!
Ahhhhhh, soooooo Humphrey wasn’t assassinated, he planned an assassination fascinating
Why does Robin not remember?? Just cause it was a long time ago??
The Captain has laughed before, right?? I’m sure I’ve seen him laugh before??
Thomas it’s not you XD
BOOOOONNNNNEEEEEE
How did they not know it was Humphrey?? She’s dressed like a fucking Tudor - absolutely no critical thinking skills at Button House. They share one braincell and the ghost pigeon has flown away with it again…
All this before the opening titles, this is gonna be a long post!!
I like that Alison starts stuttering simply at the thought of being on camera, nice set up for her anxiety about it
Robin senses the moon?? Oooohhhhh - and a Macbeth reference!!
Of course he senses Barclay arriving!!
The others calling Humphrey like a dog is so funny
Omg are we gonna get Cap/Fanny solidarity this season??? I just want them to be like a sibling relationship!!
(Pronoun correction - well done Kitty)
Did Humphrey used to paint?? Cause why else would he assume he was famous for being a painter if he wasn’t an artist in life????
Mary is a death gatekeeper, I adore that!!
Can we talk about how similar this scene is to one I wrote literally ages ago in the Ghosts Christmas story on AO3???? Like Humphrey trying to speak broken French like just how I wrote it and his wife hating English, it’s literally over dinner (well breakfast) as well?? I have the foresight of a medium apparently but only in very specific fan fiction scenarios!!
Omg live Humphrey is so cute wtf?? Why do I have a crush on him, or is it gender envy?????? Gender envy from a headless Tudor????
Poor Humphrey, all he wants is a nice wife!!
Pat stop ruining the moment!!
Oh God no?? If Barclay dies at Button House will he be stuck there???? Ah thanks for confirming that for me, Julian. Get that bitch off the property!!
Obi content, Obi content, Obi content!! My guy.
Okay but why does Fanny calling Pat out on his racist joke feel so rewarding to me??
A nun, a gorilla, and a WHAT, Patrick???? Pat making a pedo joke, did not have that on my season 3 bingo card????
Humphrey is so good to his wife, he’s making such an effort even though she’s really not making much effort back. It must have been so difficult for them both though seriously
She speaks English???
What’s happening?? OOOOhhhh they’re gonna kill Queen Elizabeth and put I’m assuming Mary Queen of Scots on the throne?? Cause they’re Catholics right so Mary QoS would make sense like the Babington Plot right??
Sophie defending her husband you love to see it.
Did Julian have a heart attack?? He says he knows the sign and that squash will do it.
It must be so weird for Charlotte and obviously especially Kiell as well to just talk to the air??
"LIKE POSH BATMAN" XD XD
"Bonne see you all!!" Humphrey I adore you so much!!
No don’t discover the plot?? Is he killed cause he found out about it??
“Arms at our sides, we’re not a seagull.”
Did Kitty die of a disease of some kind?? She really didn’t like the idea of laughter being contagious??
Ah so that’s why they were all laughing apart from Cap and Fanny.
Oh God Humphrey no??
“This isn’t the life you signed up for - go have another one” Catch me CRYING??? Humphrey you are so sweet wtf??? Don’t sacrifice yourself though, it ain’t worth it??
THE SALUTE
Humphrey and Robin solidarity
Wait?? He wasn’t executed right there?? So the documentary is wrong?? Does he die in a sword fight?? Nope he can’t get the swords down. What’s happening??
(I love the arguing between the guards thats so good XD)
The chimney - genius move!! (his legs O.O nice legs)
AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH BITCH I SCREAMED, THE FUCKING SWORDS THATS SO FUNNY HOLY SHIT???? I LOVE THAT SO MUCH OMG, THATS SUCH A GOOD TWIST!! OMG
The body?? Holy shit thats so good omg
ROBIN TUDOR ERA ROBIN finding Humphrey awwwwwww
“Ummmm - they’re all at it” the sass Thomas I love it!!
Ngl I kinda want the Button House jumper?? It looks so comfy!!
Ooooooohhhh Julian thinks Barclay’s dead that’s so clever - bitch is on the verge of death though
Ahhhhh its the shirt, so bitch isn’t gonna die what a prick.
Alison don’t kiss the tag it’s been on the sweaty chest of a land owning Tory all day - you’ll catch every disease under the sun from that.
Thomas leave her alone
Yesssss Alison standing up to him finally!!
*whispers* “Damn your eyes” that is literally the sweetest thing O.o
I want this scene tattooed on me forever, Thomas’ little smile when she stands up to him!!
ALISON PARENTAL BACKSTORY THIS IS ALL IVE WANTED!! We got it right though, lost both parents.
“Like having family all around me” <3 <3 <3 Oh fuck leave her alone
FAMILY PHOTO O.O O.O That’s so sweet
BUTT HO BUTT HO BUTT HO BUTT HO (Cap… calm yourself)
Julian’s cameo XD XD XD That’s brilliant!!! And Pat asking for an autograph
THAT WAS SO GOOOODDDDDDD
AS YOU CAN SEE MY USE OF CAPS HAS INCREASED THOUGH THE EPISODE CAUSE HOLY SHIT AMAZING
BRO I LOVED THAT SO MUCH???? THIS SEASON IS GONNA BE INCREDIBLE OMG
100/10 PRIMARILY FOR HUMPHREY CONTENT AND ALSO ALISON BACKSTORY

Top ten dramas you think should/deserve to have a second season or a sequel of some kind?
1. The Uncanny Counter (Korean)
Like this drama is so good and I would love a second season to explore their powers more, explore more of their backstory, and especially explore how Shin Hyuk-woo might change after the events of season 1. Supposedly there's supposed to be a Season 2 and bitch I'm excited
2. Psych-Hunter (Chinese)
After that fucking cliff hanger of an ending, I think we need a season 2 to a) figure out what the fuck the boys are gonna do about Liu Zhi b) figure out if Jiang Shuo can go back to the real world with his memories of his psyche and still remember Qin Yiheng after everything...basically the ending left us on a cliff hanger that like...hints at a season 2 and I hope we fucking get one because I have questions that need to be fucking answered
3. The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window (Japanese)
I know it was taken from a manga and while I liked the ending, I think we need a sequel of some sort to just sort of like...explain the backstory a little more, expand on the main character's relationship as well as the girl...it would be interesting to see what they could do with a sequel
4. Missing Noir M (Korean)
This drama ended on the weirdest fucking cliff hanger...like the main character received an email with like...this vague ass sentence that has something to do with his past and like...his past kind of was explored but like...after receiving the email, I kind of want to know what's going to happen next you know? Especially after his partner went to jail and he's basically alone since their computer girl went off to do who knows what
5. Rugal (Korean)
This one ended with like...all of them going their separate ways but still contacting the main character after everything, asking to meet up and maybe get back together. Like...I want them to meet up and kick ass again. I think a second season would be good, just because of how it kind of ended.
6. Danger Zone Season 1 (Taiwanese)
This drama ended on like...the biggest fucking cliff hanger ever. I know we're getting a second season (it drops tomorrow) but like if we weren't getting a season 2, I would have fucking demanded one because like...you can't just end the drama the way you did! There's so many cases that needed to be solved, like the case of the mass shooter on Christmas Eve that killed Ren Fei's mom and we still haven't figured out if Liang Yan Dong is going to be free or not, his trial was only reversed, we still don't know if the court is going to rule him not guilty. I have questions that need answers
7. Junkyouju Takatsuki Akira no Suisatsu (Japanese)
I know we're getting a season 2 (very excited) but like if we weren't...I would want one because BACKSTORY! So much backstory, so much to unpack, I have questions, I also need more softness between Akira and Fukumaki
8. S.C.I. (Chinese)
I know there's a season 2 in the work but like...don't know when that's gonna drop but like...the last couple of minutes on the last episode was so....fucking ominous, like Zhan Yao, sir, what the fuck. Like what the fuck. Also, I want to know who fucking handcuffed Zhao Jue's hand when he got in the car. Was it Zhao Zhen? Was it someone else? Was it Zhan Yao's dad? Like, there's also some backstory between Zhao Jue and Zhan Yao's dad that I have questions about so like...season 2 better hurry up so these questions can be answered
9. The Fiery Priest (Korean)
This shit is so fucking funny, I would love a fucking season 2 (which we are apparently getting I have no fucking idea when). Like, this is one of the funniest kdramas I have watched in a long ass time, it's so good. and like, I would like to see more mischief by these four main characters (plus the nuns and priests that they work with because they also have some amazing backstories that are just like...what the fuck)
10. Tell Me What You Saw (Korean)
This one kind of ends on a cliff hanger, like...he contacts her through her little earpiece thingy and like...they go off to solve cases and stuff and I just think that I would like to see more of them. I liked the drama, I liked the cases, I thought the overarching case was interesting so idk, I'd like to see more of them

CALL THE MIDWIFE Christmas Special 2020.
Just a few thoughts on the CS. I thought they did amazingly well to pull it off. While I was watching it for the first time, I wasn't thinking about the safety restrictions at all. The only thing that reminded me was the increased use of masks. I am sure if I so desired, I could go through and spot all the precautionary measures, but I don’t desire to. I think they coped very well with C-19.
What I am more interested in is the dynamic now Val has gone. The scenario concocted for her leaving I am fine with. When a cast member's departure hasn’t benefited from long-term planning like Jessica Raine or Charlotte Ritchie, it’s always a bit awkward. It would have been lovely to wave Val off from the steps of Nonnatus, but it is what it is.
I discussed with @nonnatushouse1 prior to the CS how the absence of Val would affect the other characters and their relationships. For the first time we only have 2 young midwives (sorry Phyllis) the show tends to have at least 3. We now have the same number of working ecclesiastical midwives as secular. (I am focusing only on Nonnatus here)
Of course we don’t know if they will introduce another nurse in Series 10, nothing has been announced yet. My other point of interest is the relationship between Trixie and Lucille. They are friends; they get on, but like in most threesomes, there is a tendency for a linchpin, one person who links the other two. I feel in this scenario it was Val. It has already been emphasized that Lucille will be the one to miss Val the most. Lucille and Trixie are very different people. Will Trixie be able to fill that void for Lucille. Also Lucille is courting, Trixie is still single. Will Lucille and Cyril become closer. Zephryn Taitte is now named in the opening credits.
I thought there was more social interaction between the nuns and the nurses. It was a lot more relaxed and gossipy, similar to Sr Winifred and before her Sr Bernadette. I also thought I could hear Val in some lines said by Sr Hilda and Frances, but that might just be me. I felt I got to know them better after this episode.
The dynamic at the moment seems to be; Sister Julienne with the weight of the world on her shoulders (Perhaps with some solutions that may involve Trixie in the future, reading into the closing scenes). The rest are now trying to find their place in the scheme of things, now the dynamic has shifted slightly. With Sr SMJ waving at everyone from her bed.
Well, glad I got that off my chest. What else is there to do in Tier 3 on a stormy Boxing Day?
(Thanks to @lovetheturners for feedback)
