[SPOILERS] Review/Ramble on Roma (2018) Dir. Alfonso Cuarón

So i just watch Roma, a movie around the 1970´s (1971 to be precise) in México, Ciudad de México

For anyone who doesn´t know, there´s this suburb called Roma, that´s why it has that name, its not in Italy or anything jaja.

By now, probably everyone has seen it or has been like ¨OH, SPANISH! i don´t want to read the english subtitles ¨ (i hope that´s not the case because SO HELP ME DOG), in my unprofessional and cinema student-ish opinion, I like it.

The movie is recorded in black and white, not sure with what camera or why the decision was to make it that way but the image has great quality and it makes the focus more on the story and characters than the surroundings (not that the art wasn´t important, in fact, it must have been a hell of a work to make certain pallets of colors to make it contrast different to each, also to not make everyone blend together into a weird spot). Cuarón direct, write and was in charge of the photography (which is what he is known for) , his writing was actually really balanced between the serious main parts of the movie, the common daily basis humor and interactions between the characters.

Most of the shots were master shots with panning, there were no medium shots nor close ups (At least not until the end of act 3) . Doing this type of shots gives the viewer a chance to see the surroundings of the characters and to view whats going on around. I think this is because, even if we follow the main family and the protagonist Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), the main point could be that they aren´t the only ones with a life and with problems. We can see other people, we can see them doing their own thing, it gives the film a more genuine feeling about a really busy street, city or town, we can see there´s more life outside the house of the protagonists.

The whole story has a lot of tragedy, in fact there´s 2 whole stories full of tragedies: Cleo´s (the maid) story and Sofia´s (the employer or ¨patrona¨) story. Cleo is working like a maid and nanny for a family, she doesnt seem to be miserable, just indifferent about that job. It doesnt mean she is uncaring towards Sofia´s children or anything, its just her usual routine that she already knows. It is really nice to watch 2 people which share the same language talking like a usual common thing, other than just spanish. In this case, Cleo and her friend talk in mixteco a native language of México, im glad to see it treated as something usual for them and not like a surprise because there´s still a big community of indigenous people that still practice certain traditions and still talk languages. This includes more people and shows the diversity in the country as well as introducing more talent to the filming industry (not just certain type of people). Cleo isnt mistreated by anyone at the house, which is nice to see (other than the usual racist comments and mistreament), however she has this impotence appearance when her employer gets angry at her (obviously anyone would be terrified, specially if you lived with them and you could be potentionally thrown out). At some point, Cleo gets pregnant and its horrified when she: a) cant convince Fermín (motherfucker 2) that he is the father, and b) isnt sure wether her boss will throw her out of the house or not.

Sofia is the employer, her children are Sofia, Paco, Toño and Pepe. Her husband Antonio (motherfucker 1) is a doctor which she loves, but once the story starts developing you get to know in the background that their marriage is crumbling. He goes on having adventures with other woman and lying to Sofia, meanwhile Sofia tries to keep it together while her children are acting like children and pre-teenagers.

One thing i found interesting is the decision the writer (Cuarón) took when he made almost every male character an asshole. You have Antonio which lies and cheats her wife and then you have Fermin who bails on Cleo once she tells him she´s pregnant, also he threatens to kill her and her unborn child with martial arts (it...got a bit weird...). I would add the kids Paco and Toño because they were acting like disrespectful asshats, but I´ll pretend it was the hormones of teenage years and the whole situation between their mother and father. There´s also el compadre (i think its brother in law) of Sofia who tries to ¨comfort her¨. In general, this movie has certain violence towards female protagonists.

Another thing i found interesting was how everything was according the era, like everything around the characters was moving independently of the characters. Everyone had to move according to the circumstances around them which they didnt had control over. Most notorious example: 1971, 3 years after Tlatelolco

The characters move around while events like the protests of students are still going around, the children are talking in one scene bout someone who got shot and in another sequence we see Cleo and her patrona going to a store to buy a crib which is interrupted by the screams of horror from the students, then a pair gets inside the store screaming ¨They are killing us!!¨. Then a group of porros (people who are paid by the government to start riots and make the opponent side the responsible of the excessive force used by the police, AKA, making them the guilty ones) get inside and shoot them. That whole scenario is independent of the characters, yet they are involve in it because they are there, and they cant do anything because thats what a person would do in a stressing situation: nothing, besides, Cleo is pregnant at that point so she would obviously wouldnt make any dumb move, specially when she sees that one of the porros is Fermin.

Including social and politic events in the movie gives it a more authentic atmosphere, it makes the viewer get inside the story and give a view and let us appreciate how México (my country) looked back then as well as giving us a look to everyones personalities during this different time period.

The interactions of the children and Cleo was the sweetest most adorable thing i have ever seen. Cleo is looked like a human being and not like a third type character, she has a voice and a personality, which is something we dont usually see when it comes to maids. She shares fun with her friends, she has dates, she laughs, she cries, she is human. She also shares part of her culture, with the children and Sofia isnt bother at all. Cleo sings lullabies in mixteco to the little girl Sofia, who gleefully sings with her. Making it so common, so normal and such a nice moment normalizes it; in the shot Cleo and Sofia says prayers first and then Cleo sings her lullaby. Its great to see the interactions and intersections of cultures like that, both are mexicans but come from different homes and cultures, yes, cultures because at the end of the day México is very diverse, it doesnt have just one way to live. There are different cultures within the country. It is really important that we see it as the normal, our normal because we need to include more people, to make it ok for everyone to feel included in the same place, we are from the same place after all.

Other important point is the fact that this women have each others back in some sense and in most of the movie. Cleo helps Sofia during her times of need when she is stressing over her husbands infidelity and economic state, while Sofia helps Cleo during her pregnancy. Teresa, Sofia´s mother, also helps Cleo by getting her to a store to buy a crib and Cleo´s doctor is actually a woman, so most of the movie is woman helping woman. NOTE: Im not saying the men in the whole movie are awful people, SOME of them are, the one who have more interactions with the main protagonists. I dont want a radical feminist group to take this movie and twisted like they usually do with EVERY fucking thing. The main point of the movie is looking the hard and tough lives of women from different cultures and how they move on, some man do help like the guy who drive them around or Ramon (a side character which i think it was Adela´s boyfriend, Adela is Cleo´s friend), END OF THE NOTE

CONCLUSION:

It is a good movie that shows a common part of life which involve good and bad things, from tragedies like infant death or civil massacres to the hopefulness of a better way to live, because the end of the movie comes full circles with everyones life but with hopefulness of a bright future. In this case the saying ¨What doesnt kill you makes you stronger¨ fits perfectly.

The photography and art departments did a great job making the ambient from the 70s and giving the atmosphere to each scene and sequence a heavy and light feeling depending on what was going on. My mom was delighted to see certain places during those times because she remembers during her childhood looking at those different signs and streets, so the ambience was on point. For some reason I feel Netflix sold their soul or something to make this movie cause THOSE CARS LOOK EXPENSIVE, or maybe it isnt as expensive as i thought (should look up that later). The only complaint i could think of is that it should have pass to movie theaters a bit longer or at least project it again cause it can be more appreciated in those places than in your home with a faulty internet (my internet went out at least 7 times); also the effects of the babies were... really awkward to the point of being distracting and funny. They really looked like dolls, they bounce a bit, specially during the scene where Cleo gives birth to the death child (I shouldnt have laugh to that scene...but that damn doll look so plasticy... )

All and all, it was enjoyable to watch, the acting was good, even for the children. They did a great job, some of the lines were spoken awkwardly by the oldest kid, as to sound more mature? i guess that was the direction they went for. The characters were likable, they could make you laugh or cry during different times and make you feel for them.

I think anyone could watch this but it is, what everyone could consider, a slow movie. So make sure to have everything you got and take time to appreciate everything around them, because i think this is like a candy you need to look around, everything they put its meant to be looked at. I give the movie 8/10

i hate when im like, genuinely upset about something that happened, and then everything else upsets me too

like today my mom took my son to see his father behind my back (like she asked if he could come, i said no, she texted him a place to meet up). and his father is the person who decided, while sober, to take my child with him, knowing he was going to buy heroin, overdosed and was found 2 hours later in the city with his foot on the brake in the middle of a busy intersection.

i knew something like this would happen too, one of the first things i said to my mom was to not let brandon see him while im at school, i personally dont feel safe around him and im absolutely disgusted by the idea of him being around my son. she agreed, but also kept fucking pestering me to let him come over because hes in recovery and doing better, despite this being the THIRD time some kind of incident happend involving him, heroin, and my son.

so anyway, im in the kitchen, my old high school friend stopped by to see jens because its been awhile, shes playing with jensen and my mom is also sitting by jensen. my moms phone goes off, and it was left in the kitchen, so i went to go look so i could tell her who it was. and all i see is a message from him asking where they were going to meet.

as soon as my mom realized i had seen it she just started laughing, like the feeling of me wanting to protect my child from someone who is consistently letting him down was some big joke to her? so i say,

“what the fuck?” and shes like,

“its not your right to decide for him not to see his father; jensen has to make that decision for himself”.

????? my son is three years old, is very developmentally delayed because hes autistic, he literally cant make a choice between what toy he wants to play with, let alone if he wants to experience abuse before deciding its not worth it? so then she says,

“you will regret not letting him have a relationship with his father”

and my mind just like, snapped. because this is the same woman who 1. took me away from my father because he was a coke head and 2. invited her boyfriend of 1 month to live with us, and sat there and LAUGHED AT ME while he was abusing me. like she somehow has the audacity to tell me that my childhood that was robbed from me from years of abuse made me a better person somehow? that experiencing something like that for yourself prepares you to be a better person?

like i cant express how much i love and want to protect my child. my number one goal since the fucking second i found out i was pregnant was to make sure this child wouldnt grow up like i did. bc childhood trauma really fucking sticks with you and im never going to be a real person with real relationships because i cant love myself. and i just wanted my child to grow up knowing his mom would do anything for him and would never bring someone in unless i trusted them 100%

and i really genuinely begged my mom to be on my side, just this once. she knew how important this is to me. and she betrayed that trust, just like jensens dad betrayed my trust.

im feeling so lost because after what happened with brandon, the only person i could rely on to watch jensen while im in class was my mom and like, i have literally No. One. that i can trust with my son. im a student, i collect unemployment, i cant afford day care or a baby sitter. ive been going to school as much as i could for the past 4 years to become a nurse because its a good paying career and i dont want jensen to grow up in poverty like i did and everyday it feels more and more like ill never get there, ill never be a good mom, i cant ever do anything right

but ANYWAY that happened earlier today and every single small thing that i would normally not even notice fucking pissed me off to no end like deadass theres a fucking mosquito in my room right now and it keeps fucking flying right in my face and i started angry crying over it like i shouldnt be so affected by it but it just feels like the cherry on top of the cake of a shitty shitty day and its like the last straw of my fucking sanity jesus fucking christ

The Soul is Imparted at Birth

(Borrowing most of this from Robert Thieme’s The Origin of Human Life)

The Bible teaches plainly, and Christians believe that the soul and body are separate entities making-up human beings (along with the optional spirit, upon faith in Christ). The Bible is clear that soul life coincides with breath and birth. The Bible passages used to support the common Christian presumption that soul life originates in the womb are misapplied or misunderstood.

One popular mistaken support is a misunderstanding of the narrative by Luke of an interchange between Mary and Elizabeth. Elizabeth is pregnant with the fetus (baby, if you prefer) that would be John (the Baptist, or baptizer). Mary, after hearing from an angel that she would become pregnant and give birth to the Messiah and that her relative Elizabeth was already six months pregnant in her old age, rushed to Elizabeth’s town, and upon entering her home greeted her. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, her fetus “leaped [moved about] in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit” (Luke 1:41). Elizabeth then exclaims how blessed is Mary and she excitedly mentions, “as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.” An interpretation that assigns the joy to the fetus is natural because of our English expression, “jump for joy,” but “leaped for joy,” can be translated, “moved by means of joy, i.e., her own joy. The Greek ‘en’ for ‘for’ is an extremely versatile preposition most accurately interpreted by its context; ‘in the sphere of ‘and ‘because of,’ are other common usages for ‘en’. If the writer intended to establish a doctrine of pre-birth soul life, the Greek personal pronoun for ‘his’ could have been inserted to ascribe the joy to the fetus, i.e., “moved because of his joy,” rather than require the reader to infer the absurd notion that the baby understood the significance of Mary. But rather than specify that something so peculiar was occurring, Luke (a doctor, by the way), in his description of the event, merely states, “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in the womb.” (Thieme).

In Elizabeth’s response, she compliments Mary for believing the message of her own special future pregnancy, which suggests that she also received this angelic news, so clearly she became suddenly excited upon hearing from Mary in this surprise appearance. The excitement would cause a quickened pulse rate now pumping adrenaline into the placenta, which can cause reflexive movement of the fetus—common in pregnancies. (Thieme).

It was Elizabeth who heard Mary and was filled with the Spirit, with no mention of the baby doing either! Certainly this is a wonderful and meaningful Biblical event. But, to perceive this as an account of the conscious soul of John responding in happiness at the presence of Mary is more mystical than miraculous.

Another Biblical reference presumed to support soul life in the womb is a statute in the Law of Moses (Ex. 21:24) that calls for retaliation in the case of a pregnant innocent bystander who is struck causing a premature birth, resulting in serious injury to mother or child. In this scenario, the baby is born alive, With no penalty mentioned in the case of a stillbirth or miscarriage, this law seems to rather support the case for soul life beginning at birth.

There’s the popular pro-life bumper sticker quote: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” (Jer. 1:5). This merely demonstrates God’s foreknowledge and his creative design in biological reproduction. ‘Formed,’ in this verse is ‘yastar,’ meaning to form from existing material. A human soul, created in the image of the invisible God, hardly fits this description. The word identifies biological formation. (Theme)

Christians commonly assume that conception is the profound event when human life begins. But a study of the biological reproductive process might bring that into question. The zygote, the fertilized egg, does not contain the entire genetic information required to become a human being, and so cannot by itself determine that a person will develop. As the zygote receives more genetic information from the mother its cells divide becoming a cell mass, or morula, from which is formed the placenta, other fetal membranes, and the embryo. Only the embryo is capable of becoming a human being. Also, if the soul (as described by the Bible) is basically the mind of the individual, then shouldn’t there be a brain first? Such things as mentality, self-consciousness, volition, emotion, and conscience occur my means of the nervous system. (Thieme, 19).

Though many argue for conception, or some other moment within the term of pregnancy, as the time the soul might be created or joined with the fetus, the Bible is clear that this occurs only at birth.

The Book of Genesis includes an account of the creation of the first man. First biological life is formed, and then a soul is joined to biological life, creating human life:

Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being (Gen. 2:7, italics added).

The reasonable inference from Scripture is that God imparts a soul (the breath of life) into the infant’s nostrils at birth before his first exhale. There are many Scripture verses that speak of this ‘breath of life’:

Stop regarding man whose breath of life [neshamah hayyah] is in his nostrils (Isaiah 2:22a).

For I will not contend forever [with Israel], neither will I always be angry; for the spirit [ruach, human life] would grow faint before Me, and the breath [neshamah, spark of life, soul life] of those whom I have made (Job 1:21).

Then the dust [biological life] will return to the earth as it was, and the breath [soul life] will return to God who gave it (Eccl. 12:7).

The Spirit of God has made me [a human being], and the breath [neshamah, soul life] of [from] the Almighty gives me [chayyah, human] life (Job 33:4).

Thus says God the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and its offspring, who gives breath [neshamah, spark of life, soul life] to the people on it, and spirit [ruach, human life] to those who walk on it (Isa. 42:5). [Notice the joining of God’s past creation with on ongoing action, His ongoing creation of the soul].

Besides these myriad of associations of breath with life and soul, there are so many passages that set the boundary for human life at birth.

A time to be born, and a time to die (Eccl. 3:2).

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us (Isa. 9:6).

Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist (Matt. 11:11).

And the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which shall be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord (Luke 2:10-11).” [It was the birth of Christ that was celebrated, not His conception].

You know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great (Job 38:21).

Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there (Job 1:21a) [Returning to the womb, as a metaphor for death, implies an absence of soul in the womb (because of the doctrine of the immortality of the soul)].

The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life (Job 33:4).

Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3) [Jesus didn’t use ‘conceived again,’ in this analogy to spiritual life].

According to the Bible, without the soul, destruction of a fetus (as offensive as that may be) is not murder. In His establishment of capital punishment, God decreed,

Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God [related to the soul] He made man (Gen. 9:6).

Murder, then, depends upon the possession of a soul. And the Bible makes clear that the soul is created at birth.

1. Put collard greens into her vagina

I had a patient that got a pretty nasty infection and became septic after putting collard greens in her vagina for several days because she thought it would induce an abortion.

4. The oatmeal lady

A woman comes in after having a baby and tells us she’s having trouble breastfeeding. I book her an appointment at a breastfeeding clinic, give her some resources, etc. Her appointment was fine and she went on her merry way. A few weeks later, we get the fax that she went to the breastfeeding clinic and everything was fine. Awesome.

A year later she shows up for her doctor’s appointment, and she’s obese. She must have put 100lbs on an already obese frame. She’s developed many health problems related to her weight (that she refuses to acknowledge are due to her weight. Of course.) She tells us she’s never been more active after having a kid, her diet hasn’t changed, her work life hasn’t changed, nothing has changed, the weight gain just happened due to ~hormones. We ask if she’s breastfeeding, she says yes. We ask how she’s getting the extra calories for the breastfeeding, and she tells us the Clinic told her to eat 1-2 bowls of plain oatmeal a day. It worked, so she’s still doing it.

We figure this is how she gained so much weight (she’s probably eating 2 large bowls of oatmeal on top of her meals, with milk, sugar, butter, etc), but the woman she’s eating 1-2 packets of plain oatmeal a day. Nothing on it, nothing added to it. It says plain on the package, it tastes plain, it’s plain.

We send the doctor in to see her after briefing him on the whole story about the oatmeal. He’s in the room with her a time — much longer than normal. When she comes out of the room, she keeps her head down and walks off, looking angry and embarrassed. The doctor walks up to the nursing table and fills out the chart.

“You never asked what of oatmeal she’s eating”.

Yeah. Turns out she didn’t know plain rolled oats were a thing. She thought the breastfeeding clinic meant plain oatmeal . She was eating an entire of Dad’s oatmeal cookies every single day for a year (basically a ‘bowl or two’ filled with cookies), and could not understand how that was different from oatmeal.

5. She was expecting to lose weight on this diet?

Had a patient who was coming back post lap band for a check up. What we usually do is revise the patient’s weight, etc and ‘tighten’ the band or ‘loosen’ it as needed.

Now the thing to remember is that getting lap band isn’t as easy as just throwing down some money. For six months, the patient must meet with a psychiatrist and a dietitian to understand what they’re getting into and if they can adjust their lifestyles and commit. A goal weight loss target (ex: lose ten pounds) is usually set for the end of the six months to ensure the patient is serious. So after all of this rigorous evaluation, a patient is deemed fit for an operation.

Enter my patient ‘Sylvia’. I checked her chart, BMI before surgery was 40, she was morbidly obese, and now had come in for her first follow up to ascertain if she’d lost any weight. Well, I put her on the scale, calculate, and what do I see? Her BMI was now 45. Perplexed, I asked her to explain her diet to me.

Sylvia- Well I’ve been doing a liquid diet just like you all said

Me- Very good! Can you maybe what you have?

Sylvia- I make smoothies and have them whenever I feel hungry.

Me- So what do you put in your smoothies?

Sylvia- Cake and ice cream.

Me- …..

Yup. She was serious. Somehow it didn’t occur to her that this wouldn’t be healthy. We reversed her band.

6. What was she feeding her baby?

A woman came in for a baby check with her 6-month-old and she had what looked like chocolate milk in the babys bottle. So he started explaining to her as kindly as he could that she shouldnt be giving her baby chocolate milk. At which point she interrupts him and says, “Oh that isnt chocolate milk. Its coffee! He just loves it!

7. Actually, she wasn’t dying at all

An older lady was brought into the ER barely conscious by her husband. In a very thick Italian accent she told the doctor she was dying. She had complained of feeling tingly and having a dry mouth prior to passing out.

The doctor sat the husband down and they did a history. No serious medical problems and she was very fit. In fact she spent the morning cleaning her sons bar, as she often did on a Sunday morning.

Considering her age they took these symptoms very seriously and begun running tests to find the source of her ailments.

The son came in to visit his mother, and on the way he bypassed his bar. He noticed that his mother had helped herself to some of the ‘treats’ prepared the night before.

The son, the apple of his parents eye, had to then explain to his father and the doctor that the treats she had enjoyed were space cakes. And apparently she really enjoyed them as she ate quite a few.

They then had to sit down and tell this elderly lady that she was not dying, and that she was in fact stoned!

Fortunately she was still high enough to see the humour.

8. Her son had a “skull fracture”

A secretary buzzes back to me that there’s a call on line two that needs medical advice. I pick it up and one of our patient’s mother is on the phone having a panic attack. She is hyperventilating into the phone. I asked her if she was alright, thinking maybe she needed an ambulance, and through her breaths and now tears, she starts telling me that she thinks her four year old son has a skull fracture.

I ask if he fell. No.

I ask if he’s conscious. Yes.

I ask if he’s breathing. Yes.

I ask if he is bleeding from his ears, eyes, nose, mouth, scalp. No.

I ask if there is any visible wound. No.

I ask why she thinks he fractured his skull. Because underneath his eyes is red and puffy and Google says that’s a skull fracture.

I tell her to go to the ER for proper assessment (we don’t do MRIs, X-rays, CT Scans). She doesn’t want to. She says she was supposed to take her kids to the beach. Mind you, she is still crying and breathing heavy at this point. I tell her to come right over then but warned her we would probably have to send her to the ER.

She shows up 15 minutes later, cradling the child and crying. The little boy was crying too and screaming “I don’t want to die Mommy!” She kept hushing him and saying “Mommy loves her strong boy, no matter what!” Which only made him cry harder.

I pull her back into the room and she just dissolves as she tells me how she looked at him in horror this morning and saw the guarantee signs of a skull fracture. She swears he must have hit his head yesterday at swim practice.

The little boy is crying hard but I can see the noticeable swelling and pinkness under the eyes that she was referring too. I went to get another doctor and told her what I thought. She went in, came out about ten minutes later shaking her head. She had the same diagnosis.

You know when you wipe your eyes after swimming, you usually wipe under your eye too? The kid must have wiped off his sunscreen around his eyes the day before. All the pinkness and puffiness was from a mild sunburn under his eyes.

9. People who go to the vet are stupid too

I don’t have to deal with people patients, but I helped out a vet for a while and there’s a lot of dumb pet owners. Had one lady who was really concerned about her obese lab getting hiccups. The vet let her know the dog was overweight and she told him he was wrong and then insisted we do diagnostic tests to “figure out” the hiccups.

10. He totally does this to himself

I don’t like speaking ill of my patients mainly because I think we all neglect our health to a certain extent volitionally, and that can be viewed as “dumb”.

But the winner is Aristotle*. Aristotle is a 35 year old highly functional corporate lawyer. She googled impetigo and, with the help of WebMD, came to the conclusion that it was a children’s disorder on the arms and legs that can only be contracted from children and she wasn’t around children. Insists that what she believes she has (perioral dermatitis) is a “woman’s disorder” and she doesn’t have this “children’s disease”. Says that the antibiotic he prescribed isn’t on the list of treatments (thanks WebMD). (It’s on the top of the list actually, of you know, actual medical books, but whatever)

Whole time, she’s showing us these pics off google of “perioral dermatitis” saying it’s a woman’s disorder. Half the pictures were of men. Now one thing you should know, perioral dermatitis means rash around the mouth. That’s it. It doesn’t mean shit. It’s not a type of rash. It’s not only cured by a specific antibiotic. It’s just a rash that happens to be around the mouth. She was furious, shaking with rage and about to start throwing shit bc the doctor wouldn’t prescribe her this certain antibiotic. Doctor told us to call the cops if she came back. People are crazy.

19. He was stung by a bee and fine

I’m a student and my GP supervisor was involved in a scheme to reduce A&E waiting times by having a GP in A&E to take patients that weren’t actually in an accident or an emergency. As none of the patients were actually dangerously ill I was basically doing the consultations with the doctor supervising, double checking and signing prescriptions etc.

A guy in his late 20s walks in, looking very healthy, and sits down. “I was stung by a bee this morning”. “Where?” “On my cheek” “How long ago was this?” “Well it took me about half an hour to get here and then I’ve been waiting another three and a half hours” “Did it stop you swallowing or breathing?” “No.” “Are you allergic?” “No.” “What would you like us to do?” “Check I’m OK.”…

At this point I turn around to my supervisor attempting to say WTF do I do here? He says “You’re OK, go home.”

It was the most surreal consultation I’ve ever had.

20. That’s not how glasses work

Not a doctor but my dad is an opthamologist (eye doctor). He once told me that one of his patients came in utterly confused why the “medicine in his glasses no work anymore.”

21. Couldn’t feel the tiny tip of her pinkie

When I worked in a&e, had a patient with the complaint of “neurology” in minors. She tells me she cant feel the tip of her pinkie. A vague 0.2cmx0.2cm patch right at the top. No sensation there whatsoever. No other history or symptoms. I grabbed a needle, poked it and cured her.

22. What the actual fuck

I had a woman who refused to be discharged as she “couldn’t keep any food or drink down”. Her room was filled to the brink with sweets crisps and fizzy drinks.

I asked her to show me the vomit. She produced a sick bowl she had filled with spit. I pH tested this in front of her (contents of stomach are acidic). Of course pH was normal. She then stuck her fingers down her throat and physically forced herself to repeatedly gag and vomit. In front of me.

Next day I returned and said she had blood in her urine. She’d filled a sample pot with red juice. It literally smelled of fruit.

Boss discharged her that afternoon. She was back within a week I think

23. She wouldn’t turn off her zombie movies

Another patient was in the hospital to have her 9th baby and then give it up for adoption (she was 9 for 9 on adopting out babies). She was 34, had a BMI of 65, no teeth, a creepy partner (I think it was a feeding fetish type relationship) and NO pain tolerance. I was asked to do an epidural. As I’m going through the consent, she’s distracted by some zombie pseudo-documentary that she refused to turn off. She had brought the entire DVD set to watch during labor. At the end of the consent process, I asked if she had any questions.

She just wanted to know “when can I go smoke a cigarette?” I told her after the baby was out she could do whatever she wanted. The adoptive parents, who already had a few of her offspring, were there the ENTIRE time. I had to forcefully ask them to leave for the sterile epidural placement, which was remarkably easy given her size but a little more challenging given the distracting zombie show that she REFUSED to let us turn off. Baby slid out about 30 minutes later, and she was discharged before the end of the day. I think the OBs at least managed to get an IUD into her.

24. But will he still be a virgin?

I had a patient’s mom ask me if putting a catheter in her 6 year old son would break his hymen and would he still be a virgin.

Being a virgin was important to them because of religious reasons.

25. You can’t cure stupid

One was a lady wanting to know if our clinic would do a “virginity test” on her because her PCP told her they don’t do that. It took me way too long to explain it’s not a real thing.

Another lady needed to get tested for STDs, not weird, but she said she needed us to send the results to her prospective employer? Uh why?? We told her we wouldn’t do that but she could come get a copy of her results and do whatever she wanted with it. She does but comes back later the same day and says we gave her the wrong test results. We double check, nope, those are def her test results. Trying to sort this out with her, I asked her why her employers would want an STD test anyway. She says, they said it’s to make sure I don’t have “tubulars.”

Then it dawned on me. She meant Tuberculosis. She needed a TB test, not an STD test. She gets angry and yells that we’re just trying to trick her into taking more tests to charge her more and then stormed out…

26. “One more for the road”

This happened to a friend of mine when he was in training to become a paramedic. He was on a ride along, basically, and they had received a call where a woman fell down the stairs. They get to the address and knock on the door. The woman who called was inside folding clothes. Apparently she had been drinking on her medication. Twisted her ankle and called for an ambulance. So they asked her if she wanted to go to the hospital. She’s says yes, then proceeds to the fridge to pour “one more for the road.”

27. I told him to not do cocaine

Doc here. I had a guy with an ICD in place. For those who don’t know, it basically shocks your heart if it goes into a funny rhythm.

He would regularly come into the hospital to have it turned off because he would do a ton of cocaine and the thing would keep firing due to his high heart rate.

I told him not to do cocaine. He kept doing cocaine.
