something really cool happened today that i wanted to share:

my nephew is 9 years old, and a stereotypical little boy. he likes dinosaurs, minecraft, and ninjas.

today i walked in on him excitedly watching Nimona with my dad. (minor spoiler warning!)

i had never heard of it, but i sat down and watched some of it, just to see why he was so happy.

he started narrating it, anticipating parts of it, almost as if he’d seen it before. he had.

we didn’t get to finish it, but i watched it on my own, because it looked fun and i wanted to see how it ended.

and i loved it. it was a fun, exciting, fantastical adventure about the importance of acceptance people who are different to us.

and it had a very clear queer subplot.

one that my nephew hadn’t mentioned at all in his explanation of the film. his summary was “it’s about a monster who helps a knight that was framed for killing the queen”.

and honestly yeah, that is what the film was about.

before sharing it with us, he had watched it all, engrossed himself in the story, took it in entirely, and the part he cared about most was whether Nimona got her acceptance. he wasn’t indoctrinated, or confused, or questioning anything about himself.

he didn’t bat an eyelid over a gay love confession. he just enjoyed the film, raved about it, made my 60 year old dad watch the movie about the monster who didn’t fit in.

he’s still the same little boy who’s been asking us how to get a girlfriend.

the only thing a movie centred around queer and queer-coded characters taught my nephew was that those who are different to him are not monsters. that’s it.

and that dragons are really cool.

Sorry that my first comic isn’t really focusing on the infection part, but I wanted to focus on Pinkie and Spike’s dynamic because it’s my favorite part of this AU! One of my… three?... main issues with the 3x12 Roy & Jamie fight is that it arguably frames Roy as far more oblivious about his attraction to Jamie than I would personally prefer. However, it also and happily opens the door for exploring all sorts of awkward and delicious scenarios of Roy painstakingly Figuring Things Out.

Like, after the fight and after he starts going to therapy and apologises to Keeley (and maybe Jamie, though I’m less sure about that one) and all three of them are on solid ground once more and spending quite a bit of time together, Roy starts wondering about his feelings for Keeley. Because he loves having her as a friend, right, she’s a fucking fantastic friend, anyone would be lucky to have her… but he also knows that he wants to be more than friends, only these days his feelings for her aren’t all that indistinguishable from his feelings for Jamie, because he gets the same sort of happy jolt when he’s with either of them and sometimes he just looks at them and he can’t help smiling and there’s this spark when Keeley bumps her arm against his or he puts gives Jamie a pat on the back for a job well done…

And that’s confusing, right, because what the fuck does that mean, if his feelings for them – his lost love and his best mate – are the same? Does he not want to date Keeley after all? Does he just really, really love her as a friend but thinks that loving her means wanting to date her because, uh, stupid gender roles and expectations or something?

He can’t figure it out. He, after much consideration and going half out of his mind, takes it to the Diamond Dogs. (Why not Dr. Sharon? Well, maybe she’s on holiday. Maybe it feels like too silly a thing to take to something serious like therapy, which Roy is still getting the hang of. Maybe he just wants the opinions of some other guys. Doylist explanation, I just really like it when he takes stuff to the Diamon Dogs.)

So there’s Nate and Beard and Higgins all waiting patiently until Roy finally manages to grit out, “How do you know if you if you want to date someone or if you just love them as a friend?”

And there’s a long pause as the other dogs give each other little sideway glances, until one of them – Nate perhaps – bites the bullet and asks, “So, um, is this… is this about Keeley or Jamie?”

And that’s. What. It’s. No. But…

“… both.” Realising the truth of it as he says the word.

And then he probably shouts fuck because it’s Roy and now he has to walk away with the new and world-shattering idea that maybe it’s not that he doesn’t want to be more than friends with Keeley, maybe it’s that he wants to be more than friends with Jamie too, and sorry, the Roy you have dialled is no longer in service, page not found, please try again in 6 to 8 business days.

It’s still funny that, when it comes to the Tech situation, the Bad Batch trailer page on the Star Wars website just says that the batchers are, “now scattered following the events of season two.” Not that one of them is dead, not even that the squad is scattered following a devastating loss. Just that they’re scattered. And then it immediately moves in to talking about Ventress.

Simon’s selflessness this season. How he can just easily give up everything to be with Wille. Justice, his right to an opinion, his interest, his stance, himself. How he just ignores his feelings in favor of not getting into a fight with this love. He was silenced. Maybe not intentional, but he was.

“Is everything okay between us?”

“Yes.”

Even though it’s not. Even though they had a million things they needed to talk about. He kust forgives and forgives and takes it all in. Takes all the pain and his anger and try not to let it out. Until, he’s unable to anymore. Until it all piled up and can’t do this anymore. Until he realizes that maybe what he needs to give up is not himself, but this relationship with Wille. Because he’s not okay anymore.

I love how they’re checking in on each other. How they ask if the other’s okay. How despite their tense conversation, they will reassure the other that they love them. But despite multiple check-ins, no matter how many times they talk, it’s not gonna work if they’re not honest with each other.

But it breaks my heart, how they have to go through all that. Love shouldn’t be this hard.

because i hadn’t read the manga before and therefore had no idea what to expect, i was a bit wary about tadaima okaeri airing as the first omegaverse anime because just there’s so many possible pitfalls when telling stories in the omegaverse, and especially when telling those stories for an audience that may or may not be well-versed with the mechanisms and tropes of the genre. however that being said, now that i’ve watched the first episode, i am much less wary!! honestly i don’t think they could have done a better job picking and adapting an omegaverse story for a wider audience, i appreciated the attention to politics and world building, i really really like that female alphas were mentioned within the first five minutes and that - while there don’t seem to be any women in the main cast - it wasn’t just only men in the cast of characters. i think they handled the introduction to some of the more shocking parts of omegaverse really well, frankly and with normalcy, and i also don’t think they’ve fallen into the pitfall of treating omegas like stereotypical yaoi ukes which tbh i was really worried about lol

also just, it’s really hecking cute and wholesome i was cooing every time hikari was on screen he’s just adorable and the parents (i'm sorry i've forgotten their names) are also just so in love and soooo wholesome <3
