Weekly Recap: 1/10/2022 - 1/16/2022
Nutrition + Hydration: Great!
I didn't have any specific nutrition goals this week, but in general, I'm just trying to be mindful about what I eat so I don't have any large nutritional gaps (eg vitamins and minerals), eating more fruits/veg, and trying to branch out or cook more. Highlights:
Tried Built Bars (four different flavors so far). I've loved every one of them and cannot recommend them highly enough. The absolute best protein bar I've put in my face.
Tried a new recipe for pumpkin molasses tofu "mousse" which tbh was not great. I swapped maple syrup for more molasses bc I don't keep syrup in the house and it was just... not good. Will not make again but will eat what I have because money.
Had fruits or veg at nearly every breakfast and dinner. Lunches are hit or miss if I actually make something or just graze a bit, but I've been trying to add real produce into my main meals, especially because I always seem to let produce go bad before I remember to eat them all. I had a few big salads, made good dents in my snap peas and carrots, almost finished off my grapes, and finished both of my personal watermelons.
Nutrient needs (based on estimates throughout the week). Based on these, I'm going to switch up the multi I take to one with less iron and has a bit of zinc and non-B vitamins and add in some Brazil nuts when I get them in the mail.
Low in: selenium, phosphorous, zinc, vitamin E, folate, mildly low in potassium (lower than optimal but better than a traditional US diet)
Higher in: iron, B vitamins from the multi
As for hydration, my goal was 19,000g of water total throughout the week (coming from all sources, including food, values for food items from databases). This is based on some general recommendations I remember from my sports nutrition class last year I definitely met that goal. I rounded/estimated amounts, and I got about~20,600g of water this week!
Movement: Great!
My goals were to do 2 yoga sessions and go to the gym once, and I met both of those goals! I'm actually really proud of myself for going to the gym once! I set the goal to go 4x the prior week, and went a sum total of 0 times. I think the goal was just too aggressive for me, especially since that week was my husband's (second) surgery. The issue I have with goals is that if there is Going back after not going for months was scary, and all I did was cardio, but the point is that I did the scary thing. I also did some lower intensity cardio at home once, so that’s good too!
As for the yoga, both sessions were the same beginner’s flexibility class on my app, but it felt nice to do them at night especially as an relaxation/unwind activity. I’m still find myself not trusting my left wrist and expecting pain. With my yoga, I am working not just on flexibility, but on trusting my body again.
Sleep: Poor
I could definitely improve on this side. Although I didn’t set any goals for myself, I’m generally trying to get my sleep back into a normal rhythm. My sleep has been kind of off the last couple weeks simply from caring for my husband post-surgery. I downloaded a new sleep app called Pillow, which has so far caught my husband and Oreo snoring but hasn’t shown me any major useful info. I think it’s just too early to tell- just two nights + a really short nap.
Work / Education / Professional Growth: Average
I worked literally one day last week. I had taken M-W off to care for my husband and went back to work on Thursday. Friday, the Dr I was scheduled to work with was at a different location, so I got the day off work essentially. I asked a coworker if he needed any help with his, but he wanted to try that clinic on his own and needed the hours (he relies on the job for health insurance, and hours have been spotty thanks to Omicron).
I still need to get work done on my apps for med school. I'm working on hyping myself up to ask for LORs. It’s way harder than it looks.
Personal and Emotional Growth: Great!
I had a cavity that I noticed while flossing earlier this month and literally broke down because of how large it was (I don't do great with dental procedures and was worried it would need a root canal or something). I also didn't have a dentist... Anyway. The short story is that I was able to make a last min (15 min notice) appointment with a dentist half a mile from me, got a filling, and everything is better there.
On the personal development side, I am somewhat reclaiming my secular tarot practice. I did my year ahead reading plus a few daily reads too. I also had a productive personal counseling session on Tuesday (I use BetterHelp for my own counseling), where we talked about not trying to do too much at once. Oh, and I actually did dishes twice and did two loads of laundry!
Interpersonal Relationships: Great!
My marriage is doing great! Husband’s almost two weeks out of surgery, and caring for him has been a very difficult act of love and service. I’m finding myself getting irritated sometimes though, not with him exactly, but it's just hard to be a primary caretaker. That said, we have been able to spend time together particularly watching The Witcher.
I also spent some time talking with my best friend, who I am planning on seeing in a couple weeks. We live a couple hours’ away now, so I'm driving up there and we are making it A Thing for a day. Husband should be able to care for himself. I’m really excited!
This Week's Goals:
Nutrition + Hydration: cook a meal/dish at least 5 times, 19000g water again, take my multi as I feel I need to.
Movement: four independent purposeful movement days, strength training session 1x
Sleep: be in bed, ready to sleep (not on phone, meditation or music playing in sleep headphones) by midnight 3x
Professional Growth: determine how many LORs I need and who I will ask
Personal Growth: daily tarot practice 4x, get laundry done + put away
Interpersonal: marriage therapy today

So after many years I've been getting the itch to write fic again. I never wrote 1D, though. I'm gonna rewatch tons of interviews to try and get the voices right but I'm wondering if you have any opinion on the boys' characterizations (especially Harry's obvs)?
yay for more fic! but might I encourage you to try some solo harry fic rather than 1D? hazoff, hitch, winstyles, and xarry all give us regular new content to work with. (plus universal adapter plug harry styles routinely gifts us more new ships like he’s a tomcat proudly presenting us with a series of doomed fieldmice). and I generally agree with valencing’s take that fic has to be animated by possibility, not nostalgia.
that said, if you are set on diving into ot5 territory, I would encourage you to direct questions of this nature to @dearmrsawyer and @dinoflangellate, who are both writing solid 1d fic in the current era. but since you asked, obviously i can’t resist also giving you my own (very brief) opinions on the other four and a whole extensive lot of opinions on harry characterization......
niall: the vintage 1D characterization, which I’m not really a fan of, is “happy-go-lucky Irishman who likes to eat a lot.” i think it’s far more interesting to work with what we know from the solo era: anxious, driven by the constant worry that he’s about to fail, a pack animal who prioritizes being surrounded by his bros, always constantly shirtless.
liam: the vintage 1D characterization was “responsible Daddy Direction” and WOW did everybody blow that one. meghan nailed it recently with the observation that “the moniker of ‘the responsible one’ was thrust upon him mostly because their handlers confused obedience with responsibility.” liam is far too compliant –as @lunarrua says, he just wants someone to tell him how to be good – and that’s a really dangerous trait when he does not seem to have a lot of people around him who are looking out for his best interests professionally or personally. could be great for fic!
louis: always characterized as the bad boy/mischief-maker, and there’s some truth there, but it’s not always balanced well with what I find far more salient to his characterization, which is the intense level of responsibility he’s had to shoulder for a very large family that has been through some very difficult circumstances in recent years. also key to his characterization is that he’s a natural leader; one fic that nails this trait well is jibrailis’s shall never be saved by half.
zayn: he’s not the mysterious one so much as he’s someone who’s smart enough to keep his mouth shut (a trait he shares with harry). In the solo era, it doesn’t seem like there’s anyone in zayn’s life who tells him no, which I think needs to impact his characterization in an interesting way.
harry: oh let’s GO. There are several varieties of vintage characterization that I despise… first of all, I dislike leaning too much into Clumsy Harry when in fact he has spectacular hand-eye coordination (it’s just his foot-floor coordination that is occasionally and memorably off.) what’s more interesting/important to me from a physical standpoint is that he seems to have an unusually high level of comfort in his own body.
i also dislike it when people make harry too much of a yoga/green juice hippie when he is in fact a foul-mouthed sex-obsessed Packers fan cheeseburger-eating bro. similarly, I think a lot of writers also write harry in a way that’s overly precious or fussy. (if your harry is regularly calling his partner Nicholas or Jeffrey, you’re probably in that territory.) but he’s gotta be a little bit of a weirdo who buys people cacti and ties bows in his hoodie strings and hates halloween, and it’s tough to nail that without it tipping into overly precious.
in my opinion, the most important bit of new canon we got this promo cycle was the interview where harry said he’ll try pretty much anything anybody recommends to him. i like a harry characterization that leans into him being open-minded/easily bored/always seeking something new. i think a current era harry characterization also has to acknowledge the emotional openness he’s talked about recently: being willing to be vulnerable and to build relationships by opening himself up to people. long have we characterized harry as a sex pest who will physically make the first move (a characterization i love and which absolutely deserves to endure until we are all dust) but that’s gotta be balanced with him also being more likely to make the first emotional move.
harry gives us so much to work with that you gotta figure out how to focus somehow. he exudes sex at all times, yet he is also baby. he’s a ruthless perfectionist, but he also insists on making space for all ideas during a writing session. he craves the feeling of being settled but obtains that by surfing from family to family rather than creating a home for himself. i was always very fond of kate’s harry characterizations, and one neat trick she had was focusing in on one harry trait per fic to center her characterization around: let’s start right now focuses on his perfectionism, her wimbledon lirry fic [OH SHIT IT’S GONE????]  focuses on the impacts of success at a young age and treatment by the media, her regency werewolf fic [OH SHIT IT’S ALSO GONE???] focused on his need to be of service to others. for a good but definitely darker characterization, threeturn’s real for me is unparalleled. oh also rilla’s dancing on my own has this lovely quiet way of building harry’s characterization by repeating the phrase “harry likes...” wow this got long and off-track, hope i answered your question somehow in there!
