First published in Japan as Keinen Kacho Gafu in 1891, the Keinen Album is a collection of 160 woodblock prints of birds and flowers by Imao Keinen (1845-1924). This edition—a 4-volume box set of paperbacks, one book for each season—is a most beautiful collection. I don’t know much about Keinen, but his work is incredible. Clearly drawn from life and sharing some similarities to Western book illustrators, Keinen’s bird and flower species are instantly recognizable, and each print is a study in rhythmic composition, color, and form that is almost irresistibly appealing.
