Hey, I thought your essay about lordi was really interesting. I hadn’t followed the esc before maneskin/blind channel and I’m not Finnish so I didn’t know the history. I was wondering what your thoughts were on the Rasmus competing. To me it sort of seemed like they were trying to revive their career, but did it work?

The Rasmus is still one of the most successful Finnish bands of all time, but they did peak around 15-20 years ago and of course there is no return to the biggest glory days. Jezebel single reached number four in Finland. They have a gig at Helsinki Ice Hall Black Box (capacity 3000 ppl) on Saturday and there are still tickets available 😶 The album Rise is published this Friday and it’s going to be interesting to see the sales numbers of that.

In interviews Lauri has said that they took part in UMK because for the last two years covid-19 had pretty much ruined everything by canceling planned gigs and tours, and also they wanted to try something new and challenging. Rise is also the first album they are publishing after five years of inactivity so of course they wanted to remind the Finnish and global public that they still exist.

In my opinion UMK was a great way to establish both Emppu as their new guitarist and their updated visual look. I’m not mad at all for The Rasmus taking part in UMK as they won fair and square. Jezebel wasn’t my personal favorite but I could be nothing but thankful and proud that big names are not afraid to be associated with UMK anymore which benefits both the artist and the national selection. I also love how much fan The Rasmus seemed to be having during ESC and and I was definitely rooting for them in Turin from the bottom of my heart 💛🖤
