Blog 6 Writing, Reading, Listening and Learning
Felt alright this week, and it went by quick. Went to the pool, it was really nice, and I hope it stays open longer. Been working on Fallen Angel and Ozymanzous. The hard part about writing sometimes it getting everything to fit, plot and motivations wise. Also having a draft where you just put every snippet you think of in the order you think of it, while it's important to write stuff down when you have an idea, disorganization can be so distracting.
Playing video games less. One of my mods on Stardew broke. Listening to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon music now, frustrated there's so many games and OSTs it's hard to find the one I want.
Happy September.
I've been reading again, I'm reading "Listen to the Marriage" by John Jay Osborn and trying to take notes as if it wasn't a fictional novel. But, a novel could be just as well since it's for Fallen Angel, it can show pacing and stuff for an audience. A lot of books like this are about the person being counseled, and so will mine, but it makes the therapist look really simple, the way a middleschooler views their history teacher and can't imagine having multiple periods of classes. A lot of middleschool teachers are careful to have their classes synched exactly, I'm sure, but in small schools you will be teaching 6, 7, and 8 which means 3 completely different courses. This is what therapists do, right down to the glorified baby-sitter part, except probably 6 courses. Osborn's story only exists for an hour each week in her office, all she thinks about is the couple she's working with (whoa re unreliable narrators) and her grief for her mother. Which is probably enough to have on your plate. Locked-door stories are interesting. I also started watching this series about a seriously Freudian guy (what's the point of harping on mommy-issues, can I fix it now, can I change the past?) reacting, sorry, he's not some guy he's a therapist, reacting to Showtime's Couple Therapy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUItaloRvoQ Also a note to content creators, hyperlink your links, you will see more clicks. The problem with all my studying, of course, is, it's fake dating and fantasy, it doesn't really matter what the wizard asks, they're not going to get a straight answer, only poke holes in a silly lie. I wonder if real therapists ever get rich people just taking the piss. I think there was a fake dating couple counseling movie, but the closest to a book I've seen is The Rosie Effect, where he gets his friend to pretend to be his spouse for counseling-in-leui-of-jail because telling her about all of it would "stress her out too much" and it's a captivating train-wreck. I would tell them to renew their vows if I thought they'd just met at a bar. The problem is, if they're not taking the piss but rather lying to each other, or not listening, making up a double-life, covering up a double-life, or just are that un-intimate that they don't seem to know each other well, they will think you are an un-serious therapist who cannot help real people.
I'm having a problem with my plan to stop unhauling books that I haven't read: I'm about full-up on books, I still shop a little, and if I move soon I cannot move ALL of these things. Reblogging a post about "you don't have to be "productive" just read to enjoy your spare time" but but but. I read physical. I have a little room for this floating stack, but I don't know how to organize it. I started rereading my favorite book from last year, Woman no. 17, one of the few books I've read but kept.
I also started "Intro to Stoicastic Modeling 3rd edition" which boasts that this edition is more in-depth and less intro-y than the others, which is annoying to me because I don't know how to read textbooks and now you're telling me I should track down edition 1? Anyways, I was sort of thinking about sociology (you hear stochastic in the news when it's discussing motives for man-made violence) then I was afraid it would be that chemistry thing stoiciometry, but it's really the study of all random relationships that influence each other, it boasts it's about math, sociology, psychology, and business leadership. The first example is about cheating at flip-a-coin. If anyone has tips for reading a textbook as an adult, let me know. Probably "just pretend it's a 200 page science/technology book."

DAY 5430
Jalsa, Mumbai                    Dec 27/28,  2022               Tue/Wed 11:08 AM
🪔💖 , December 28 .. birthday of Ef Dinesh Mishra .. Ef Waseem Sayed .. and Ef Niloy .. December 27 .. birthday of Ef Diipesh Arrora from Surat, Gujarat .. Love to all of you and greetings .. 🌿 ✨ On this day - still awaiting confirmation - .. the Indian National Anthem "JANA GANA MANA" was first sung on 27 Dec 1911 .. 111 years ago .. Jai Hind !! 🫡🇮🇳
the year on its end gets a closer look over the horizon .. and one is tempted to look back .. look back in anger .. haha .. ‘Look back in Anger’ .. the play by John Osborne .. famous , enacted often for theatre .. but in the reality of life there is the absence of looking back .. what shall one get .. why anger .. you destroy your own interior in doing so .. let it not prevail upon you .. may it be absent in its destructive spirit and convert itself to the happiness and the joys of the World, in its beauty and existence ..
a resolution ..?
Naaah ..
why a resolution at the end of the year for the next .. why .. why not a resolve during it at any given time and place .. resolve then and there .. why shift the deed to the 31st of December/1 st January .. are they specially made for the resolve of its manifestation .. ?
So .. the leisure of the furlough obtained for the few days spent in the meets of some extraordinary ideas and technologies existent and coming in the future seen heard assessed and considered ..
a frightening process of what is going to come in the years ahead .. the AI, the VR, the AR .. and so on , with an explanation that defies my limited brain reserve .. the MetaVerse, the NFT and what ever have you - not a single alphabet of the dictionary left to challenge these fresh new inventions ..
under consideration .. and WIP or as one often hears POC .. whatever that means .. all a blurr .. the simplicity evaporated .. but for them they maintain that the simplicity is of the invention and the science and technology ..
well .. we await the final presentation of what they mean ..
and prepare for the days ahead ..
my love

The Harry Hand Case
By Catherine Kavalauskas, University of California Davis Class of 2026
October 16, 2023
Tumblr media
The Case of the Hairy Hand is a lawsuit that captured the attention of the entire country and is now part of the standard curriculum of most law schools. The foundation of this case surrounds the decrease in quality of life because of a hairy and impaired hand.
On a March evening, in 1914, in the small town of Berlin, New Hampshire, George W. Hawkins walked into the kitchen of his family’s home and tried to flip on the light switch. Instead, he came into contact with an electrical wire which ultimately left the eleven-year-old boy with a third-degree electrical burn on his right hand. The burn was treated. However, the boy was left with a large scar across his palm. By the time George had turned seventeen, his hand had lost a great amount of mobility, and he found the scarred hand affecting his everyday life. His hand would often cramp, causing his fingers to uncontrollably move into a cup-like position.
George eventually underwent surgery, however, how the surgery came about is unclear. Most sources (1) say that Edward McGee (a local doctor in Berlin, New Hampshire), approached the father of George in regards to fixing the boy’s hand. It is noted that McGee was interested in George as an experiment – he ultimately wanted to attempt a skin grafting technique on George (something that he had limited experience with). Other sources say that George was the one who approached McGee and requested that the doctor perform surgery to increase the functionality of his hand. However, the one premise that all sources agree on is that Edward McGee guaranteed a “one-hundred percent good hand.” Therefore, on these conditions, George agreed to have the procedure done.
McGee removed the scar tissue from George’s palm and replaced it with grafted skin from his chest. Sources state (2) that McGee was unfamiliar with proper skin-grafting techniques and failed to remove the scar. Still, McGee considered the surgery a success. However, as time went on George’s palm grew thick, natty hair.
Therefore, in 1926 Hawkins sued McGee for breach of contract (as the surgeon had guaranteed a “one-hundred percent good hand”). The court agreed that George should be awarded for both the breach of contract and the pain and suffering he endured because of the operation. Hawkins was awarded $3,000 (around $52,000 in modern-day currency). However, McGee countered stating that this large amount of money was excessive; to which the Judge agreed. McGee’s lawyers argued that pain is to be expected with any surgical procedure, therefore, the pain and suffering argument was dropped. The ultimate problem that the court faced was what damage to George’s hand (that resulted from the surgery) should be awarded.
The New Hampshire Supreme Court calculated the rightful way to recover damages through expectation interest. Expectation interest (otherwise known as expectation damage) is calculated through net profits and losses. In other words, George was entitled to the difference in value between a 100% functioning hand (as was promised by the contract) and a hairy hand.
Moreover, using expectation interest, George successfully sued McGee for a breach of contract, and he was compensated for the damages that had resulted from the operation. George agreed to accept $1,400 (in today’s dollars, this is equivalent to $20,000).
The basis of the Hawkins vs. McGee case revolves around the decrease in the quality of life and loss of human opportunities because of a hairy and impaired hand. The grossness of The Harry Hand Case has resulted in it being one of the most renowned law cases that the United States has ever witnessed. Its popularity is reflected in its recognition in both the film and novel “The Paper Chase,” by John Jay Osborn. Today, Hawkins vs. McGee remains one of the most popular and interesting law cases for young law students as it has become the standard curriculum for many law schools.

Mini Review: Listen to the Marriage by John Jay Osborn Jr.
Tumblr media
Rating: 5/5
Release Date: today! 10/2/18
Listen to the Marriage is a story about a separated couple told through weekly sessions with their unorthodox marriage counselor. It's amazing. Perfectly written. No minced words, everything cuts right to the point. I read the ARC in 2.5 hours flat, but it had the emotional impact worthy of a Tolstoy brick. The characters were vivid and reminded me of so many individuals I've known. The character development was real. I'm completely blown away by this book. It's a must-read.

The Paper Chase (1973). A first-year law student at Harvard Law School struggles with balancing his coursework and his relationship with the daughter of his sternest professor.
As far as college movies go, this seems invested in a pretty original premise! The concept of a law student caught up in the world of his professor’s family via his daughter is an interesting one, and the general pace and thrust of the film captures the pressure and frustration of higher education, as well as the struggle for identity, pretty well. It’s full of interesting dynamics that are never quite fully realised, in no small part because you don’t care enough for the lead. It means that it just never quite hits the mark it wants to. 6.5/10.

Thursday 17/6/21 - The Dinosaur Lip Debate
Tumblr media
Allosaurus, RJ Palmer
Palaeontology is an ever evolving field. Every time a new fossil is found, or the technology to observe them improves, we find out something new about how the animals looked or behaved. As more details are filled in, the discussion has turned more toward soft body parts, such as the toes, and the face.
I know I said yesterday's post was my dinosaur post for the week, but I got an inbox from a reader asking if I could talk about the Lip Debate, so I thought I'd weigh in on what I know. Thanks for the suggestion @amphibious-owl.
Reptile Lips?
When I say the word lips, you'd immediately think of those luscious smoochers that a human has right? But the term "lip" refers to any fleshy, flexible covering of the teeth in vertebrate animals. Some existing reptile groups have lips, namely squamates (lizards and snakes), so it is possible that dinosaurs had them.
Tumblr media

The problem is that the closest living relatives of dinosaurs, birds, have beaks instead. And while it is possible that beaks evolved from lips, the dinosaur's second closest living relatives, crocodilians, have lipless mouths, where teeth are visible when the mouth is closed. If they didn't have lips before diverging from crocodiles, they probably didn't evolve them and then lose them before getting to birds (as the argument goes). This is the start of the debate.

Bottom: Blue Jay, displaying a toothless beak
Reconstructions in Pop Culture
The debate is mostly about therapod dinosaurs, because many groups of herbivorous dinosaurs have beaks and rear teeth that would've been hidden by fleshy cheeks. I didn't mention the use of lips in dinosaur reconstructions during my earlier article, Your Dinosaurs Are Wrong, because different media have showed both the lipped and lipless condition in different dinosaurs. And at present, scientists aren't sure which is correct.

The Palaeontological Debate
• Phylogenetic Bracketing
As mentioned above, the two groups most closely related to extinct dinosaurs do not have lips. Because dinosaurs were bracketed between these two groups, it is easy to come to the conclusion that liplessness is an ancestral condition to all three. Inferring traits from both ancestors and descendants is called Phylogenetic Bracketing.
Tumblr media
Comparison of Crocodile Jaws to Tyrannosaurus Jaws (Scott Hartman)
This particular argument has its counter, because the shape and placement of teeth on jaws of crocodiles and therapod dinosaurs differs greatly. Crocodile teeth are angled outwards, a specialisation for fish eating, and lips would get in the way. Dinosaur teeth are almost vertical relative to the skull, and the upper and lower teeth did not interlock at all.
• Jaw-bone Foramina
The debate has reached its head in recent years because palaeontologists have found that markings on the edges of the jaw bones of different animals can correspond to the presence of lips in a living animal. These holes, called labial foramina, allow for placement of blood vessels and nerves around the mouth of the animal. All vertebrate skulls have these, the question is on how numerous they are.
Tumblr media
Labial Foramina on Tyrannosaurus, highlighted as red dots (Scott Hartman)
In crocodiles, there are many foramina around the teeth, and in several extant groups, this has coincided with exposed teeth. Some dinosaur groups, such as Tyrannosaurs and Spinosaurs, have lots of these foramina too, so some think this means that they had a crocodile-like face.
Other palaeontologists think that again, crocodiles are poor analogues because the surface of a crocodilian skull is rough in general (refer to the image previous) whereas therapod skulls are only rough around the jaws. These holes may indicate attachment points for fleshy coverings for the larger teeth as they overlap when the dinosaur closes its mouth.
• Variation within Therapoda?
The answer may not be as simple as a yes or no, but maybe a who did and who didn't. I mentioned above that Tyrannosaurus and Spinosaurs in particular have been selected as groups likely for liplessness, but maybe it was just that they were the outliers. Many therapods, including dromeosaurs (raptors) had a more conservative number of foramina, more aligning with the skulls of animals we do know had lips.

Spinosaurus in particular has been under scrutiny on its lips as of late, (but Spinosaurus is always under scrutiny). And although some have suggested it had lips, since it has a similar skull and lifestyle to crocodilians, maybe their fleshy faces were similar too.

What's the Right Answer?
To sum up this post, we just don't know yet. My personal take is that some dinosaurs may have had lips, and others were less likely to. But we cannot be 100% certain on any one species' lip condition until we find soft tissues preserved.
If you want to look further into the topic, here's a couple articles from people more educated on the topic:
Mark Witton; "Did Tyrannosaurs Smile like Crocodiles?"
Scott Hartman; "The Lip Post"
And here's a long-ish Youtube video also covering the topic, that I found very informative:
Ben G Thomas; "Did T.rex Have Lips?"
Thankyou for reading, and I hope that you found this post informative. I have a few more dinosaur-related posts on this blog, so happy reading.
