Once I head someone say Sarah is the only really necessary or meaningful female character, and that Nazz and the Kankers are pretty much disposable; ''Nazz has no personality, and the Kankers are absent from 50% of episodes and are just a Diabolous ex-machina ending when they appear. The could work very well without any of them.''

What do you think of this?

are they implying that she's only "meaningful" because she's related to ed? because...yikes dog. sarah serves a pretty similar role to the kankers in that she foils the scams and pranks and acts as an obstacle and/or deterrent. an antagonist. but the way they fulfill the role and the reaction they get from the eds are different in ways that i'm too lazy to get into at the moment.

now i could genuinely be missing something because i've never taken a class on media analysis or whatever the fuck, but i truly don't get what people mean when they say nazz is uniquely lacking in personality. i'm not saying eene has excellent, fleshed out female characters, but some people act as if 1) any of the non-eds have highly complex personalities that are explored canonically 2) being kind, outgoing, flirtatious, sporty, etc. aren't personality traits. just because someone doesn't like her personality doesn't mean it doesn't exist. and we know just as much, if not more about nazz's interests than we do the kankers. or jonny: he likes wood, is laid back and seems to enjoy superheroes. or kevin: he likes bmx. he's a bully. he has a crush on nazz. he's buds with rolf, whose backstory we probably know the most about after the eds (maybe even more?). then there's jimmy who lowkey has a great, complex personality.

seems like since nazz is pretty, is into stereotypically "girly" things and is nice, people consider her a "bad" (female) character. which to me is hilarious and ironic. these are the same people who call the kankers "evil". like okay... 😂

this idea that all female characters are supposed to be virtuous geniuses... it's a show about 3 dumbass preteen boys. there are tons of female-led shows available out there, and female main characters galore. these people should go watch em. seriously. im tired of hearing about it frankly.

oh and if edd was canonically a girl, people would hate her and call her a mary sue 👍

‘We’ve been Jesse and the Rippers! Thanks for coming out,’ Jesse said as a wave of cheers and applause rippled around the club. He left the stage and headed to the small dressing room the venue owner provided for them. It had been a good show. The crowd liked their material and they’d even managed to sell a good deal of CDs. But that hadn’t been the highlight of his night. No, the highlight of Jesse’s night had been the cute girl who’d been watching him throughout. She didn’t seem to be a fan of theirs, but rather someone who had attended the club they just happened to be playing at, but she couldn’t take her eyes off him. And Jesse loved that. As the band packed up their stuff he headed out into the bar to get himself a drink.

He was standing at the bar, waiting to be served, when he felt someone appear beside him and turned to find the girl from before. She glanced at him and smiled. 

‘Hey,’ Jesse said.

‘Hey,’ she said with a soft smile, ‘great set. You guys are really cool.

‘We like to think so,’ he chuckled. 

‘I mean it. I wasn’t even gonna come out tonight but I’m glad I did,’ she said. 

‘Well how about I make your night a little better,’ he said. 

‘Oh yeah?’ she smirked, ‘how are you gonna do that?’ 

‘Well I’ll start by buying you a drink,’ he said with a smirk.

‘Sounds good to me,’ she smiled.

The guys had decided not to stay after the gig but Jesse didn’t much care. He was having a good time without them. He and Y/N had spent hours tucked away in a booth at the back of the club. She was a nice girl. Sweet, funny and smokin’ hot, just Jesse’s type. As the night wore on and the drinks flowed he found himself losing the thread of the conversation as he started getting distracted by her. The way she moved her hair out of her eyes. The way she smiled when she told him something funny. The way her lips formed a perfect pout as if begging for him to kiss her. She was telling him a story, enraptured in the tale, but he had no clue what was going on. He wanted to kiss her. Badly. 

She seemed to catch him staring and blushed, ‘what?’ she asked after a moment. Jesse didn’t say anything, instead, he leaned in and placed his hand on her cheek before he kissed her tenderly. She tensed for a moment and then melted into it allowing him to continue. He pulled her to him and rolled his tongue against her lip as if asking her to go further. She responded and soon enough they were making out. When she finally pulled back Jesse watched her carefully. She was smiling, though a little shy, and said, ‘wanna take this back to my place?’ 

‘Absolutely,’ he said. 

They left pretty sharpish after that, taking a cab to her apartment. Jesse figured it would probably be better than taking her home and having to explain why kids' toys littered every room in his house. Or having to explain to Joey and Danny who she was and why she was there. They were barely out of the cab before they were back on one another kissing one another as if their life depended on it. She forced them to break away so they could walk up to her apartment, though Jesse couldn’t help but come up behind her as she unlocked her door, kissing down her neck as his hands caressed her sides. 

Once they were inside they were back together trying to make their way to the bedroom without breaking apart for too long. His lips were everywhere, nipping and sucking along her neck as he pushed her jacket off her shoulders. As they got into the bedroom Jesse pulled his shirt off, watching as she climbed onto the bed, lying down and watching him with an inviting smile. 

‘Come here,’ she said beckoning him to her. Jesse didn't have to be told twice. He was on her in a shot, hovering over her as their lips reconnected. He made his way down her neck, his fingers tracing along the hem of her shirt before he hiked it up. She moved up so she could pull it off but as she did he noticed something. 

Across her stomach were deep purple bruises, tinged with green around the edges where they’d started to heal. He stopped in his tracks and so did she, noticing him staring at her. She could see what he was seeing and nervously pulled her t-shirt down so they were no longer on show. 

‘It’s fine,’ she said.

‘Those bruises-’

‘Aren’t a big deal,’ she said going to kiss him again but he pulled back until he was sitting up on the bed. She moved to sit up properly.

‘How did you…’ he said, trailing off mid-sentence. He had his own ideas. None of them good. 

‘Let’s just say the last guy was a little rough,’ she said quietly. Jesse felt rage flow through him. He hated bullies. No matter the context. Those who used their fists to get their point across rather than their words. They made him sick. And he didn’t know how anyone could lay a finger on her. They’d only known each other mere hours but it was clear to him how special she was. 

‘It’s fine,’ she said placing a hand on his knee, ‘and it doesn't have to ruin anything between us. I mean if the bruises bother you I’ll keep my shirt on.’

‘Bother me?’ Jesse baulked loudly making her wince, ‘sorry. Honey, I’m not bothered by them. Well the look of them anyway. I’m bothered by the person who did this to you. They shouldn’t be able to get away with this.’

‘It’s not a big deal,’ she said self-consciously. 

‘Yes it is,’ he said as he placed his hand on her knee, ‘you’re a great girl. And whoever this guy is he didn’t deserve you. He doesn’t deserve any woman.’

‘I know that,’ she said quietly. Jesse could see something behind her expression as if she wanted to say something but she was holding herself back whether in fear of him judging her or admitting to whatever it was. 

‘But?’ he said gently. She looked up at him panic-stricken, ‘you don't have to tell me if you don't want to.’ 

‘No it's okay,’ she said, ‘it’s just…I know it’s wrong. I know I shouldn’t let him in but he talks me around. Every time I tell him it’s done and every time he lures me back in until something like this happens. Then it’s like I see sense. You must think I’m really stupid.

‘I don't think you're stupid. Guys like that are just good at getting their way. They know all the cards to play to make you trust them again. It doesn't mean you're stupid for believing they might be a decent human for once,’ he said. Y/N nodded. 

They sat in silence for a moment and she looked up at him with a meek smile as she said, ‘I bet this wasn’t the night you were planning on huh?’

‘Eh,’ he shrugged, ‘I had a good gig, a few drinks and I got to hang out with a pretty girl. I can’t complain.’ 

‘Still a bit of a mood killer though,’ she said. 

‘Maybe,’ he said, ‘but maybe it just gives us a chance to take another run at this whole first date thing.’

‘You wanna go on a date?’ she said.

‘Well, we did take this thing at a hundred miles an hour. Maybe we just need to slow down a little bit,’ he said with a smile. 

‘Sounds good to me,’ she replied.

‘Though,’ Jesse said, clearing his throat, ‘I’m still hoping for something.’

‘What’s that?’ she said in a whisper. 

‘That I can keep kissing you,’ he said, ‘just for a little while longer.’

‘Like I said. Sounds good to me,’ she replied.

I don't get it.

Like seriously, I honestly don't understand it.

Sjm says that Elain was someone who she and Lucien didn't see coming. She had always envisioned him with Nesta, but realized they'd tear each other apart (not in a good way, as she loves that kind of banter, but theirs would be awful). She mentions 'without getting too spoilery' that and I quote:

"there was actually a great deal of tension, growth, and healing to be found for both of them (together)"

You mean to tell me, that she says there is a great deal of tension (which we've all been seeing between them), growth and healing for them TOGETHER ONLY to have Elain break her bond with him and leave him to suffer a broken bond?

You want to tell me that SJM planned to have Elain become Lucien's mate, so they could grow and heal together, only for her to dump him and choose Azriel, and leave Lucien alone with a broken bond?

This woman, who has written Lucien as kind, patient, understanding, and truly concerned for Elain, is planning on making his mate turn away from him? This man who is said to be fiercely loyal, who could have ANY woman in Prythian he wanted but has no interest in any females, who has suffered physical and emotional trauma to help his friends. You think Sarah is just going to be like "Yeah, I'm going to put Lucien with a girl who is all around perfect for him and just take her away so she can run into the arms of another man!"

Look, I torture my precious babies too, but that?! That's INSANE to me that anyone thinks Sarah planned to set him up with a mate and said all those things if she planned for it to be a failure.

Especially since she made a comment, unprompted mind you, about an Elucien date where they go visit the gardens in London, before heading out to the countryside, stating that they're BOTH happy in nature. So she's going to talk about Feysand, Nessien modern dating, and just throw in Elucien even though she doesn't even plan for them to be together?

it simply doesn't make any sense to me.

Like take a moment, to actually sit down and think, why would this author say those kinds of things if she as some had said "planned Elriel since MAF" when she literally states the opposite. She confirmed Nessien in that same moment as well, because the series was originally supposed to finish. Az and Elain didn't have anything together, they were never planned. She didn't change from that trajectory either (as stated in her interview that I guess people want to misquote, forget, or take her words completely out of context).

SJM did say there were SMALL changes, like some characters had been added (which I suspect are Gwyn and Em), Mor's sexual orientation, but the overall arch was still the same.

Honestly, here's what I think about that.

Azriel was always meant to have a mate. A lot of people pointed out that in MAF there was a lot of Moriel hints and they were meant to be endgame. When she got backlash for lack of LGBT representation, she just decided to have Mor's preference shift. I think it left Az without a mate, but by the time SF came around she began to leave breadcrumbs for who he'd end up with. That being Gwyn.

I personally think SJM wants Gwynriel so much so, that she retconned Az's backstory so he was the one at Sangravah. That he killed everyone in site, leaving none left alive (completely OOC for Az, yet fitting with mate behavior). Like if she had no intention for Az to be connected to her in such a way, why actively make HIM the one to save her? Why make it so that Az killed everyone and left not a single person alive?

Why did she have his shadows react to her in a very specific way, a way that's calm and happy? The way they sing and dance to her, reaching out to her in a playful way. Why would she change history and put attention on these things, if there was never any future for them? What, so we can see Az fall for Elain? You mean Sarah went out of her way to change parts of Az's story and how his shadows react specifically to Gwyn, just so he can turn from her and rush into the arms of Elain? Why bother?

And before anyone says "lightsinger" and Gwyn's 'evil powers' are causing Az's shadows to dance and sing... there's a whole bonus chapter where Az's shadows dance to Azriel's singing. Gwyn isn't even there, so that's debunked.

That's all, I just had to get that off my chest. I keep seeing so many people rant and say that SJM's old editor pushed for Elucien and her new one is pushing Elriel because it's more 'popular' and she's going in this new direction now. I have no idea where that came from when she said that nothing's changed from her drunken rant, so we'll see I guess.

Being with Baji always meant that you have to get along with his friends since they're around more times than not. Especially Chifuyu seemed to get along great with you, quickly growing attached to you.

“And next thing i know-” he started explaining, having to put his arm around you to keep himself standing from how much he was laughing “he- he just-” another pause for laughter followed and you realized that you won't get to hear the rest of the story as Baji was already blushing furiously. Next thing you know is the two guys bickering back and forth on the way up to Bajis place but it brought you comfort. If everything is going down, those two bickering like a married couple never changes.

Neither does Bajis jealousy and slight possessiveness over you, especially when the blonde is involved like now, cuddled up with you with his head in your lap and his arms wrapped around your waist. Of course you didn't think anything of it, watching the movie that was on as you gently played with his hair. Chifuyu would never think anything perverted of you, you were more like a best friend or sister to him, it just felt wrong to think of you like that so he didn't think about how Baji feels when he is all over you like that.

As soon as the movie ended your lovers best friend left the place, leaving with the words of being a responsible adult and owning a Shop he has to open in the mornings. Baji came back, looking like he was about to murder someone when he laid down on top of you on the couch and holding you close as he nuzzled his face in your neck. “Ow- ow Baji! What are you doing?!” You asked slightly irritated, feeling a soft stinging sensation on your neck. Did he just bite you?

A low grumble followed as his response but he continued to attack your neck, this time with kisses and hickeys so you leaned your head to the side to give him more access as you enjoyed the feeling. “You're mine” he mumbled softly, his hair falling down in your face when he looked at you, making you giggle. “Hmm… I think i need to be reminded of that again” You hummed playful as you let a hand traveled down his chest and abs, earning a smirk from the man above you.

“That's what i thought” He chuckled and removed his shirt, letting yours follow shortly after. The fact that you didn't even wore a bra while cuddling up to his best friend annoyed him, feeling the need to claim you back, make sure everyone knows. Slowly his kisses went down to your chest where he sucked on your delicate skin in a harsh way to leave crimson marks behind, adding them to the collection of hickeys on your neck which formed a necklace by now. I swear I don't hate the show, I don't even hate any of the ladies above, not even Stella, it's just insanely unfair how the women get treated in Helluva.

And no, I don't need the creators of any given media to hold my hand and walk me through every tiny choice made by every character in said media.

Of course I can infer that Stella grew up in the same pre-determined mold Stolas was forced into. Of course I can infer that she learned tantrum behavior and violence probably got her what she wanted so her royal parents didn't have to hear it.

I can infer that Barbie self harms bc a tiny thin scar doesn't form a perfect circle around your forearm by accident, and an "X" doesn't perfectly cross out a tattoo that probably causes you great trauma to look at every day, on accident. Her tail scars are deeply concerning and saddening to think about, bc again, why do they PERFECTLY match her twin brother's natural markings? I can infer that his actions, intentional or not, deeply traumatized her, and her response was to remove a piece of herself that reminded her of him. It's dark, it's mature, it's compelling and it makes sense. The issue is, it will probably never be touched on.

I adore Millie, I adored her before season two was even announced. To the contrary, I actually don't care if she ever gets a deep deep dive at her backstory. There have been PLENTY of male characters across all kinds of media that are simply psychotic little murder gremlins, and no one ever bats an eye at it. I adore her as the murder gremlin queen she is. But as she's main cast, it's incredibly unfair by comparison how she gets utilized and how she doesn't. One minute she can take down a 60 meter tall fish monster single handedly, the next minute, because the plot wants this to be about the bois, a single hit breaks her arm to the point that BONE IS PIERCING THROUGH HER SKIN, and she just happens to get thrown directly into the world's MOST CONVENIENTLY PLACED AND ARMED bear-trap ever. It doesn't snag her face, her hair, or her hand or arm or torso or back, she falls just perfectly that her leg is just perfectly in its jaws. No arteries got caught? There's not an excess of blood, she's by the show's own dialogue, "fine." But she's benched for the rest of the episode.

And maybe it wouldn't be so bad from the critical eye if the excuse given for it wasn't SO hollow. "Helluva is more male focused and Hazbin is more female focused." Ma'am. Who do you think you're fooling out here. Angel Dust and Alastor built the HH fandom. Do you expect me to believe Mimzy or Niffty are going to be treated any better than the Helluva gals? Mimzy is literally already on the wiki as a "minor character".

It's truly ok to focus your story on males. There is literally a whole genre of anime focused on mostly male stories. But if someone, or a lot of someones, feel your female cast is lacking in substance, I find it insulting to dismiss them and say they're misreading the media and nitpicking. They care about the show, YOUR show, they care about YOUR characters, if you can remember back when you were a smaller creator HERE on tumblr, ppl love when you ask them about their OCs. And you don't have to spit out a quick bs backstory to your character if you haven't given it much thought, that's not what anyone is asking for. (Cough, Unhappy Campers, COUGH).

You know what, as a wlw im extremely tired of this fandom.

There are:

4 boys

15 girls

1 Mizuki

And the fandom manages to get the 4 boys twice as popular as the most popular wlw ship.

Up until a few months ago there were more wlw fics even if ruikasa and akitouya were always top 3 but then the genshin fujoshis entered this fandom but this isn't about that now.

I understand ruikasa and akitouya are great ships, but can't people spare the time to give wlw some love too or are people gonna continue being straight up lesbiphobic and misogynist?

MinoHaru and Anhane are THE MOST EXPLICIT SAID ships in the full game. And anhane still gets more attention because they're from vbs, a group with two boys. MinoHaru has so few fanfics actually dedicated to them, most of them are chatfics or background couples.

Its full on misogynist when:

The fandom treats leo/need and more more jump too, they're the only full female group (im not counting niigo because of Mizuki) and said as "boring" and the girls without personality, Saki saves actually because she is Tsukasa's sister.

Both of those groups has amazing stories that might not be for you, but it does not gives anyone the right to say its boring when you didn't even pay attention to it.

I've seen people call Kanade, Mafuyu, Ena boring even, but then go and amplify Tsukasa's depression (which is another fucked up thing) because sure, girls cant be as interesting as boys.

Treat Shiho, Ena and Airi as this assholes but turn around and say Akito is the best written character as if those 4 dont have the same thing of acting harsh but genuinely caring.

People put stuff like ruinene and mizurui as past abusive/toxic relationships for the sake of mlm.

People keep up putting Saki on the hospital or dead in favor of Tsukasa angst, which is not only misogynist but also ableist.

People treat Ena as this abusive older sister when really, it's not that at all. (Also used for Akito angst because people love doing this to the siblings apparently)

Its full on transphobic when:

People dont treat Mizuki as nonbinary, or their ships being nblw/nblm or even wlw would be more correct, people treat Mizuki differently. Yall barely treat them as a person, just for your ship. Mizuena and Mizumafu are extremely sexualized as if thats the only good thing for the character.

Its full on lesbiphobic when:

The 4 boys have more content than 15 girls.

A lot of the most popular wlw ship is just as a background for Akitouya. (Seriously dont even tag them when its not important to the story, when i want to see Akitouya i go to the akitouya tag).

In early fandom, people demonized Anhane to say how Akitouya is this great thing.

Someone had to write anhane fics near daily (Kohane420 if you're out there you're a legend) because there were more akian fics than anhane.

It's straight up homophobic when:

The mlm ships has a lot of fetishization and smut.

They change Tsukasa's personality to be an innocent bean who does no wrong and Rui's personality as this sexualized person just to write fanfic.

Fandom and misogyny (spoiler Endless Nights)

I never cease to be appealed by the way some people will constantly find a way to dogpile on female characters, most often for no valuable reasons.

Take Killala of the Glow, in Endless Nights for example: this morning I woke up reading a post that said, "Dream and Desire used to be best friends, it's so sad they're strangers now, I spent an entire day cursing that BITCH Killala for cheating on Dream and ruining the good relationship he had with his sibling. She did them both so wrong!"

I read Endless Nights entirely (not just the excerpts that circulate online) so my eyes popped out when I read that, a bit like this:

Just because it is, you know.... it's a lie! Or at least, it is one, partially: it's true that Killala dumped Dream for another immortal being - Sto-Oa aka the Sun, no less, - who seduced her that day, but who started this, hmmm? No, not Dream's who didn't do anything wrong this time, it's someone else, search better....

It's THEM, Desire, yeah! They're the one who had fun pushing Killala in Sto-Oa's arms, and who made fun of Dream afterwards and didn't understand why he was upset!

I think maybe people forget how powerful Desire are? They are also the one who, eons later, would canonically cause Nada's infatuation for Dream and probably Dream's for her, because they knew it was forbidden for an Endless to love a mortal and wanted Dream to be caught in the act of wrongdoing...

Also, a bit of context is important here: Killala wasn't Dream's long time queen, she had just met him in her dreams a few days ago. Ok, it doesn't make cheating better, but she said herself to Destiny she wasn't sure she loved Dream yet. And once again, it was Desire who orchestrated the whole thing, as seen in this panel:

I wonder how come it's rarely pointed that he would repeat exactly the same trick eons later with Nada: he made Nada want Dream after she saw him in a dream, then made his lonely brother want Nada, because she wanted him and he was flattered by this attention.

Coming back to the subject, Endless Nights, it seems to me that Desire's intent was ALWAYS to mess with them -Dream and Killala -, because they wanted to have fun at their brother's depends!

And I genuinely believe they didn't think Dream would react so badly: nothing is serious for Desire, who lives only for the moment. How could they imagine it would be so serious for Dream, and that he would hold a grudge for so long?

Let's see a bit of context:

When we meet Killala, she has just met Dream - she tells Desire Dream visited her in a dream "some days ago"- doesn't know him much and isn't even sure she loves him. It doesn't excuse cheating on him, but I think it's fair to assume than it this story, it's more Dream's ego than his heart which was hurt. All he does after catching her in the act is telling the young Sol she will find her way home, and that her new lover will probably transport her. If he's big mad at Killala, he does a really great job at hiding it. At the end of the story, it is said by Sol's son - who tells the story to his own son - that Killala eventually died, but at no point it's suggested that Dream caused her death.

Another interesting fact to put the situation back in its context:

Killala has a little chit-chat with Destiny, Dream's big brother and the oldest of the Endless. He asks her if he loves Dream (she doesn't know, thinks she does) and tells her that "a millennia from now", the Endless will be forbidden to love mortals and that her case in particular will be heavily discussed:

Why though? It's often believed that the drama with Killala caused the "no romance with mortals" rule, but Destiny says it would be decided a millenia after Killala's era so frankly, it's doubtful that her fallout with Dream caused this.

However, it occurred to me that it may be the tension between Dream and Desire, caused by Killala cheating on Dream with Sto-Oa, that was discussed. Think about it: Dream and Desire probably worked together before Desire did that "joke"... After that day, they worked AGAINST each other, or at least Dream looked down on Desire's realms and Desire hated him for it. I don't think that Dream having a failed romance with Killala had any influence on the universe per se, but isn't it very likely that the shift in Desire and Dream's relationship did? 🤔

Another reason could be that Sol, the future sun that would shine on Earth, wanted the not yet created mortal humans to look like Killala, who he found very beautiful.

Who knows if Dream didn't have a negative reaction to this idea, and caused the higher instances to decide that it was better for him and the other Endless to not have romanced with mortal beings who liked the woman who had previously hurt one of them? All speculation of course, since we don't know much about this "no romance with mortals" rule after all, but it's so fun to speculate!

But I digress (bless Tumblr for the absence of text limit!). The subject of my post was the misoginy which Killala of the Glow, among other female characters in The Sandman, were subjected to by a part of the fandom. Don't get me wrong: what she did to Dream was very bad, cheating is wrong! But let's not accuse her of "separating the siblings" while:

1) she was surely under Desire's influence (see the screenshot below: Desire was watching her and Sto-Oa engage in a discussion, smirking),

2) the only one who can fairly be accused of doing that was one of the siblings themselves, Desire, when they decided to make fun of their sibling by humiliating him.

3) Also I'd argue that if Dream was entitled to be angry at his sibling - it was a very bad joke... - he should have moved on after a while.

Fun fact, by the way: Dream was disappointed by Killala's change of heart, but he didn't seem angry at her, and he let her go. He even understood immediately what really happened and Desire's influence! That's why he directly went to Desire after he caught her kissing another man. It was Desire's actions that hurt him, way more than Killala's, because he valued his sibling's affection and considered him his favorite sibling.

But sure, let's blame the blue skinned lady for not being able to resist the manipulations of an immortal being, who's got exactly that kind of power. Let's just do that! 😒

I think I cracked Gal Gadot

She's the twin to all those 'character actors in leading man bodies' like Chris Pine and Brad Pitt--she's a girl next door in a supermodel body.

She was so good in Wonder Woman because she got to play the character girlishly. She was happy, sad, afraid, concerned, lovey-dovey, hopeful, dispirited. Seeing her express strong emotions made you empathize with her and feel what she was feeling. The same principle as Luke Skywalker in ANH: he may be disparaged as whiny, but he didn't get to be one of the biggest pop culture icons of all time because people didn't relate to him.

The problem is, in everything else, Gadot is either playing a stoic, driven Strong Female Character (Fast & Furious, Heart of Stone, Justice League) or maybe a vampy girlboss (Death On The Nile, Red Notice) and it's just outside her range, not letting her show any of the charisma that made her so watchable as Wonder Woman.

Even in the DCEU, post-origin story, she's generally played Wonder Woman as brooding, reserved, stoic... a little like Luke in Return of the Jedi.

Now, that worked there because it was the end of his arc and he wasn't quite a Jedi. He still had to defeat Vader and the Emperor, he was conflicted, he got angry. Now imagine if they made a Star Wars movie set after RotJ, with Luke as a Jedi Master, and he was still the protagonist. It'd probably be a little boring, right? He'd be all-wise, all-knowing, infinitely patient. A good mentor, sure, but as someone relatable? No, I think it'd be a bit dull.

Which is the problem with Wonder Woman. Yeah, she can't stay a naif forever, but her as a perfectly poised, perfectly controlled badass just isn't much fun.

I think Patty Jenkins realized this was a problem with WW1984 and tried to course-correct, with an overlong first act that gave us Diana in love again, smooching with Chris Pine again, and having internal conflict again, but it didn't work. It was trying too hard to take Diana back to who she was and doing so in a not very effective way. Right idea, but poor execution. Especially since they wanted to start off with Diana brooding, sad, et al, so that her character arc would end in her being happy.

It's a thorny problem. They have Chris Pine die to give her angst, but Wonder Woman with angst isn't very engaging and they can't give him back for realsies and they have to line up with Batman V Superman at least a little. I don't know, I don't think they ever figured it out, even though they devoted the whole plot to fixing this and trying to show off Gal Gadot's very real charisma.

I don't really have a solution myself, I'm just a guy on the internet--I'm saying the problem is that Gal Gadot has gotten so big she can only take A-list parts and modern Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking says that Strong Female Characters can't be too feminine or show a lot of emotion or be vulnerable--the only emotion they're allowed is to be smug about how awesome they are--and Gadot is notably bad at playing these badly-written parts.

I think she'd actually be great pulling a Leslie Nielsen and making fun of herself, at least a little, but that requires more wit than an algorithm is capable of generating, so I don't think we'll see that for a while.

But a certain picture caught her attention, while she walked through the magic mirror. A selfie of Cater, holding her bouquet as he winked at the camera, with a bunch of hashtags on the caption.

"I see you're looking at my pics, (Y/n)! They're fabulous, right?" The third-year student suddenly appeared next to her, it seemed like he just finished painting the roses. "But it's been such a long we’ve uploaded a picture together! I have the #perfect accessory, come with me~”

Once they arrived at his room, he quickly showed the prefect her own flower bouquet, which she used for the proposal the day before.

“My brother was who caught it!” 

“Really? That’s cool.”

I don't know much about Tokyo revengers other than it has a time loop (?) story telling device , and I go nuts for that trope so I was thinking of giving it a go. I was surprised to read that you kinda didn't like it at all hahah and as I think your tastes align a lot with mine (skip to loafer, no home, dorohedero my beloved) I'd love to hear more in depth what you didn't like, to know if I should give it a go or not. If I had to guess, considering it's a shonen, it might be because of the way girls are treated (first reason I'm dropping manga), but I wouldn't want to presume.

hi hi! ah, tokyo revengers, my old enemy. i know tokyorev sounds interesting in terms of premise, but the problem with this manga lies in the execution, not the premise itself. like yeah, who doesn't like time traveling. and you're time traveling to save your childhood gf and friends? cool! and there's gangs! hell yeah! well. i wish it was as simple as that. first, if you're a big fan of time loops and time travel then you'll probably hate tokyorev lmao. the rules are all over the place. there is zero consistency, the time travel mechanics don't make sense at all. the more new information that gets added, the messier it gets. by the end of the manga it's just... like it's SO obvious the author is pulling stuff out of his ass. it has one of the most (if not THE most) ridiculous endings i've read in my life. you mentioned female characters and yeah, that's an issue too. but honestly when the writing is that bad... what can you expect. all female characters are there for emotional support, or for the men to cry when they die, they're always someone else's sisters, gfs, ex-gfs, etc. i think wakui tried to do something with senju...? (and failed!). basically she showed up for a while then disappeared iirc. anyway yeah, he can't write women. or more like he avoids writing women. but as i said, it's not like the male characters have a lot going for themselves. to this day i still don't know wtf was going on with mikey (won't say what i'm referring to in case anyone still wants to read it after i hit this manga with rocks repeatedly but if you did read it, you know what i mean). to me it was just boring overall. the characters couldn't be less interesting, and the point of the manga is that the mc has to SAVE them. so imagine what it feels reading a manga where these guys have to live and you just don't gaf about them. plus the author doesn't know what he's doing with the plot... man it's just a mess. and yes i read it until the very end. sometimes you just have to keep going to be an informed hater

I’m gonna be completely, 100% honest and say that I don’t hate HB or HH, or even really dislike them. I actually enjoy both of them, though I suspect this may be partially due to the fact that my brother and I watch them as Our Thing, and he also discovered them during lockdown: he’s the extrovert of the family, so quarantine was very difficult for him, and I think these shows kind of acted as a tether to sanity for him.

What I WILL say about them (at least regarding HB) is that I’m disappointed. I think that I was under the impression it was really going to dive into very mature, adult, nuanced topics, and it drives me batty that it only scratches the surface of these issues when it absolutely has the potential to be /so much more/. I agree with almost all of your criticisms and critiques about the writing, especially regarding the female characters, because hooooly moly, that could be a separate message of its own. It feels like it definitely wants to be like “BoJack Horseman”, but it just doesn’t have the kind of complexity that that show does, nor is it able to balance comedy and drama as effectively, either (which, to be fair, isn’t an easy thing to do well.)

I’m still invested in the stories of all of these characters, in spite of how I desperately wish things had been handled differently. But it does feel weird watching HB, because I believe the people who have come forward and said they’ve been negatively affected in one way or another in the making of these shows, and what happened to them is absolutely unacceptable. You’ve said before that you wish someone else owned these shows, and honestly? I’m right there with you. I won’t pretend these shows don’t mean a lot to me, because they do, and I won’t lie: if it turns out HH only gets one season, I’ll be bummed. That being said, if the cancellation of these shows is what will help some people heal/get closure, then so be it. People always come first.

I’m sorry this got a bit wordy, but thank you in advance for listening anyway. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully disentangle these shows from my heart, but it’s horrible that they’ve caused harm (in multiple ways) to so many people, and I really, really, really do wish a better person owned them.

No, they're excellent words, and this was well said. It's tough when you care deeply about a piece of media with someone like Vivzie behind the wheel.

Hating HH/HB is easy, even fun. Loving these little people and their world, and how great it could have all been, is a lot harder.

i'm good now lol, to summarize my medical problems: i had gallstones and really bad flare ups. i'll probably have to get surgery to get my gallbladder removed at some point, but that's a problem for a later date lolol.

now i'm gonna warn you, this is way more in depth than you probably wanted, but we both know i'm not good at being succinct.

as far as plot, maybe this isn't the best way, but it works for me. for most of the fics i'm currently writing, i think of a trope and build off that. so for this is how you fall in love, i started with fake dating and built in mommy issues and other female character's internalized misogyny and the reader's insecurity. for the first fic i wrote, head start, i wanted a childhood best friends to lovers for jack. for murphy's law, i took the brother's best friend trope and added fwb to it. for this matty tkachuk fic, i took the second chance romance with a heaping pile of suffering and angst and started writing that.

now for to all the girls you've loved before, i was projecting because i was a nanny at the time (i wasn't in love with the dad lol, in case that was ever a thought someone had) and wanted to create a world where ordinary people could fall in love with a famous person lolol my favorite disney princess is cinderella, can you tell?

for the worst wing woman, i built the story off the reader's profession and personality instead of a specific trope.

but i also use music to inspire me as well! drops of jupiter was taken from the train song but an angstier version, if that makes sense. it's nice to have a friend was inspired by seven by taylor swift.

i read a shit ton of fics (which is one reason it takes me so long to write lolol) and i find so much inspiration in just the words people are using to create beautiful stories and phrases (i'm looking at you @chewingcyanide). i think improving your writing means reading other people's work and getting inspiration from the things they're creating. i literally look at emme's (chewingcyanide, linked above) work and take mental notes at the sheer talent in her word choice, it's so evocative. or i'll look into @thewintersoldierdisaster's works and get righteously jealous of her banter and dialogue (seriously check her stuff out!).

i say all this to say there's not a wrong or right way to write and find inspiration. i think starting with tropes or songs might be the easiest, but i always shoot to make it my own. ultimately speaking, it's about writing what you love and what inspires you the most.

Why Sylvie so bad character? Even her fans can't denied how bad her character is.

For one it was okey writing her as bad person or even evil person but the problem is that everyone in screen and MCU claim that she is good person while she not showing anything and no no no don't point at when she in McDonalds that she asking a teen if his mother will pick his up, and when she let Victor go, maybe she have a moment but the rest? No, that is no made her good person.

That also what is her personalities actually? Yes, she showing emotions but what or who is she? I can't even put a draft her personalities.

Top of that they forced as to like her.

Listen I may no professional writers but as viewer, if you can't make background a character then make this character have personalities that interesting and of you can't than just doing 'one shot' (the character gone after do the Purpose), and more importantly do not forced everyone to see the character to see like what you see

You know Megatron and Starscream? They both evil and a jerk but fans love them because how evil they both and the transformers creator not claiming that they are 'hero or good' (they have reasons but not justified anything) and they do have personalities and they have they own stories. And that MCU how you writing evil guys but fans still love them

I've said but started of as more neutral on Sylvie and more pushed to dislike her after hearing all the dumb stuff from the creators along with being really annoyed by the pompous fans. The attitude that people who didn't like her where sexists made me hate her out of spite.

Yeah, the thing is it's fine that a character is selfish or mean, that doesn't have to be a problem in itself. The problem is not treating those aspects like they're flaws or trying to the pretend the character is some that she's not. Because she is not a hero or a liberator or someone who remotely cares about anyone but herself. The only thing you could say about Sylvie is she is technically right about the TVA being bad but she ends up being no better than them.

And that this is someone who has never had a chance to have kind of relationship, not friendship, not familiar and has no chance do develop normal social skills is now going to work the service industry!? She is going is going to have to deal with people yell and complain at for the pettiest things and look down on her. She has to do a lot of hard unrewarding work with other people who don't really want to be there. The reason why the opening of Endgame is actually really good is because how much it understands the character. Nebula doesn't know how to have fun and play a dumb game, it's such a foreign concept. The mix of emotions she has are great because you can see the awkwardness.

Sylvie is whatever the plot needs her to be. She's what you'd get if you typed in Strong Female Character in an AI generator.

I love characters like Regina Mills and Wanda Maximoff, tragic messes who I do sympathize with and want them to be happy, but I also acknowledge that have done bad things. Or I can like characters like Mystique and Demona, terrible women who might have some sympathetic aspects but are ultimately terrible but that terribleness is what makes the fun to watch. But Sylvie is none of those things, she's just a boring selfish brat and they treat it like that's either ok or that she's not.

Hi! i know you already get those asks but i really want to vent: i think them making pharmercy canon now would not be satisfating for me - im a lesbian, i feel like there was no indication since the game release that they have anything for each other, if anything mercy was very close to genji, they were very sutil with that, and all pharmercy 'flirt' lines are so recent feels like rushed. One of my favorite lesbian ships ever is Caitlyn and Vi from league, they construed they relationship for YEARs, from partners to lovers and just NOW in 2023 after years and everything they confirmed both as lesbians and even in Arcane they doing great with their romance. another exemple is leona and diana and killjoy with reze in valorant, compared with overwatch feels like they dont know how to develop a organic/fresh relationship between their female characters from the game, rigth now looks just pandering for me.

And yeah I do see where your coming from, Gency has had years of build up in canon while Pharmercy has just started being pushed. Though because of the fact that in the past we've seen OW writers say that they ship Pharmercy I don't think it pandering exactly. I think it's more wish fulfilment.

I also agree with what you're saying about what happened in other games when it comes to LGBTQ+ rep, those ships have had build up. To the point where I, a person who doesn't play either game, know what your talking about. I myself am also a lesbian and I have recognized Pharah as lesbian coded since I first got into Overwatch, which was back in 2016, they've had plenty of time to add things like voice lines or lore to this relationship but they haven't. I looked up their old Overwatch 1 interactions for this post and basically none of them have that flirting vibe that the new voice lines have, most of the personal ones being Mercy saying how she thinks Ana would be proud of Pharah and Pharah just going "are we talking about the same person here?"

Also I've stated it briefly in other posts on Pharmercy but I just don't think they would work, at least they wouldn't stay a couple for a long time. A big thing that people forget when it comes to Pharmercy is that Angela has a lot of issues she needs to sort out, one of those being her terrible communication skills and her ability to say goodbye to people. The reason this is important is because Fareeha has abandonment issues, and we see how Angela's inability to communicate already affects their relationship in "As You Are", we clearly see that Angela leaving without saying goodbye affected Pharah.

This also culminates into this being a story where one person has to wait for the other to sort out their issues, which is something I don't want for Pharah. This plot line with Gency works because it's mutual. If Pharah is going to be with someone I either want them to be dealing with something that Pharah can actually help with (like Symmetra and her inevitable identity crisis) or for her partner to be just as sure of herself as Pharah is (like Sombra or Kiriko).

Again I don't want Pharah to have to wait for Angela to get her issues sorted out, she already has to wait for her mother to come back, she shouldn't have to wait for her romantic life either, and Angela's problems are not something Pharah is really equipped to help with. We actually see how Genji and Angela talk while Pharah tends to offer silent support.

I don't hate Pharmercy and under different circumstances I think they would work, however, not only are the writers kind of fumbling to get me invested but Pharah and Mercy have so many things working against them on a personal level. Not only that but they're fundementally different morally, I think a lot of people forget that Angela doesn't like helix calling them mercenaries with no regard for civilian life, while knowing full well that Pharah works for Helix. That kind of difference would work in a friendship but that would not go well in a romantic relationship.

Anyway, again I don't hate Pharmercy, it's not one of my top ships but I do like it. However, what has been presented in canon either just doesn't get me invested or I just don't want to see happen in terms of characterization (again Pharah shouldn't have to wait for her romantic life in the same way she needs to wait for her family).

Then all this culminates into a VOTE2 fight I never wanted to see with a Sasuke who's blabbering nonsense, and then suddenly, skyscrapers and ugly ass kids of ships that got little to no development. None of the questions brought up by the story got resolved

I'm not very interested in waxing poetry about how hard it was for him to kill his own parents when he had like, so many choices to make, and I think such discussions are stupid when Sasuke (and the Uchiha clan) are the biggest victims of both Itachi and Konoha and yet don't get a fraction of the sympathy that Itachi gets

Gai first of all. Why the hell did he survive 8 gates? What was the point? It cheapened his sacrifice, and made it obvious that the stakes, no matter how high, are never that serious. Frankly I didn't even want him to be the one to open the 8 gates, it should've been Lee's moment (and yes, death) but well. At least one of the Gokage (preferably Onoki and/or Gaara) should've also died. And Hinata or Hiashi should've died to protect Neji, it would've been THE perfect symbolic end to the Hyuuga issue. Oh Shikamaru should've also died, he was useless and it would've made more impact. Probs another death in Konoha 12 would be great (like Kiba maybe?) but Lee's and Shikamaru's deaths (with potentially Hinata also dying) would've been great for tension and emotional impact. Oh also neither Obito nor Madara should've died

No he was not racist, and he didn't do half the shit people claim he did (he didn't disrespect Madara's body or Uchiha's funeral practices, he didn't segregate them, he didn't force them to be in the Police Force, he didn't focus solely on the Uchiha and no other threats, he didn't call them slurs (cant believe i even need to say that), he didnt hunt them specifically, he didn't kill Izuna for shits and giggles, he didnt seek out Kagami to use him as the "black friend", he didnt spread rumors, he didnt spy on them, he didnt blame them for Madara's actions etc etc etc. He was prejudiced, as was Madara (who even went as far as to cut Tsunade in half just bc she's Senju. That's way more violent than Tobirama calling Sasuke an evil brat). I think it's perfectly understable why he was so cautious about them, and I wish he was given half the understanding the Uchiha get for their own backstories and actions, considering he too was a traumatized child soldiers who watched his siblings die and was abused by his father. He's a product of his times, and even he acknowledges that. That's why he has faith in the younger generations, and why he died for them twice.

Not at all. Naruto would've died in the Waves arc without her, and that's just the first arc. People just hate female characters, and belittle healers.

i'm assuming you're talking about the comics but on the off chance you're asking about the spiderverse movies-- for miles, margo. for gwen, hobie. miles needs unconditional support from a girl who understands his situation, and gwen needs unconditional freedom from a guy who wants her to have it even if it means they won't be together.

now for the comics:

for miles

so. what does miles need?

a love interest who isn't a version of one of peter parker's. miles needs someone original. for the love of god having him make out with an alternate version of one of his friend's exes is so fucking strange and it doesn't help him beat the diet peter parker allegations.

a superpowered girlfriend who can accompany him on adventures. miles is a social superhero who thrives on team-ups (especially on teams that contain lots of women, like the champions or the order of the web), and he wants a girlfriend who can be a part of that. that's the one thing about siat i'll give bendis credit for: that was the moment miles figured out he wanted a superpowered girlfriend. he just didn't realize gwen wasn't that girl.

-> (it also differentiates him from peter, who seems to do best with love interests who are away from the fight, and who he tends to rescue from damsel-in-distress situations. which follows: miles hasn't gone through a Dead Girlfriend Trauma that would make him nervous about putting a loved one near danger, and he's more egalitarian than peter.)

a girlfriend who's his equal. we need to retire the nerd bro fantasy of getting a hot special girl who trails after you like a puppy (staring at you, spiderverse gwiles). miles needs a partner who he can be honest with, who he respects, who can call him on his shit as often as she supports him, and who has a life of her own that she values just as much as him, with interesting things happening to her when he isn't in the room.

... but she can't be more interesting when he isn't around. the issue with katie and barbara is they feel like they don't have much going on when miles isn't in the room. it's the reverse with kamala and gwen; yes, they'd be great partners with him in a fight, but being miles's love interest holds them back from their own stories, and if he weren't around nothing about their positive character development would be lost.

a black girlfriend. miles's story hinges on him growing into a hero who represents and empowers his community. it makes sense that in his diet peter parker / placate-the-white-audience phase, he'd have his head turned by katie bishop and gwen stacy. but as miles comes into his own, and starts centering people of color-- specifically black people-- he's gotten more poc love interests (kamala, barbara). it needs to stay that way. the best way for his romantic arc to reflect his overall arc is if he ends up with a black girl.

( -> not to mention how few black couples there are in comics-- and how there are basically no a-list black couples in big two comics-- and how the few black male superheroes around tend to end up with white women. this is a representation issue bigger than miles, and it's one his character is perfect to help solve. so let's do it.)

tiana toomes is the one. no contest. he's had a few love interests over the years, but tiana stands out as the best option by far.

she's a brand-new character. she's related to a member of peter's supporting cast, but she was created recently and he has no history with her nor any version of her. any relationship she has with miles is original and all theirs, with no spider-meta hanging over their heads.

she's a superhero. she has a great design that's gorgeous without being sexualized and very female-friendly. her powerset is a lot of fun to watch and a great compliment to miles when they're working together while also being distinct from him. even when tiana needs to be rescued by miles, she's never helpless. she saves him as often as he saves her.

she holds her own. when they work together, tiana backs him up in a fight and supports him when he's vulnerable without compromising her own sense of self-worth. she's willing to call him out when he's not treating her well or his judgment is questionable.

she has a compelling backstory about being the vulture's granddaughter; she and miles share the experience of trying to redefine the legacy of a famous (white) spider-man character into something uniquely theirs. tiana could have her own miniseries, or show up in another character's title and fit right in. and without miles in her life, she wouldn't have changed from a more violent vigilante into a kinder hero.

she's black. she even shares miles's experience of coming from a multicultural/biracial background (tiana has a white father and her only living family is her white grandpa).

tiana's it. she's the perfect match to miles and she's developed enough as a character to be ready for adaptation elsewhere. put her in live action. put her in the games. put her in animation. put her everywhere.

for gwen

.... honestly, this is much more difficult to pin down. so just walk with me here.

first, gwen's love interest gallery is super underdeveloped. it's a couple of teases, a few characters she's had a vibe with, and a whole lot of false starts... and only two guys she's gone on dates with, only one of whom she's shown true interest in.

given the queercoding surrounding her character, you could make a compelling case for her being asexual... but. so many people want to ship her with male and female characters that i can't see marvel ever actually confirming it. and honestly, i think gwiles is her most popular ship because there are so few other alternatives. part of freeing her from that mess is giving her some.

so gwen isn't ready for a One True Love yet. she needs to date around first. i have plenty of ideas about that.

but when she is, what does she need?

gwen needs someone new. not peter or miles. not one of their love interests. like miles, she’s her own person who deserves to end up with an original love interest, not whoever gwen-616 was dating, or the default spider-man romance, mj. (… yes, i’m saying she shouldn’t end up with em jay)

gwen needs to go home. she only works as a character in earth-65. she needs a love interest who's either from earth-65, who can ground her to her world, or who'll never prevent her from going back to earth-65.

gwen needs someone who can protect themselves. gwen isn't really a social hero, so it doesn't matter to her if her love interest accompanies her on superhero business. what does matter is her public identity, which has put her loved ones in danger, and causes her a lot of guilt. she needs to know whoever she's with can handle any threats that might come their way from being associated with her. which means they need to have powers of their own or be able to fucking beat ass. and they need to be comfortable with the risk.

gwen needs support and space. gwen needs someone who empathizes with her problems as a superhero, who can help her through her trauma and be a source of understanding and comfort. beyond that, she might not be opposed to romance, but she isn't motivated by it. commitment freaks her out and she's a solitary hero. she doesn't need someone constantly at her side; she needs someone who'll let her leave and come back on her own terms without feeling neglected.

gwen needs someone who can help her keep her independence. someone who respects her, listens to what she needs, takes her boundaries seriously and won't begrudge her if she decides to stop the relationship. and more broadly, someone who can help her fight the systems that are trying to take it away from her.

gwen needs something queer. i don't necessarily mean Only Another Woman, though yes, she should have a female love interest at some point. gwen needs a relationship that isn't caught up in the traditional trappings of romance. she doesn't like commitment, exclusivity, labels or a married-with-kids ending. she needs to be with someone who either is queer or is cool with a relationship that isn't heteronormative.

ideally, it's hobie. again. it's been a vibe for years but the spiderverse movies tripled down on all the things about their dynamic that matter and said "yes, the vibe is romantic" out loud. he's the guy.

hobie’s something new. he isn’t peter or miles or one of their love interests. gwen-616 never dated him either. the dynamic he has with gwen-65 is unique to them.

he may not be from her world, but he'll never make her stay in his. editorially, he's a less popular character than her, which means the writers would have no reason to do that. and in-universe, it would be so ooc for him to do it that it just wouldn't happen.

he's another superhero. he has powers of his own, he's great in a fight and is used to being in them (he's even willing to kill). he also has a public identity on his world. not only can he handle himself, he understands exactly how she feels.

he understands her problems. he's also a spider-person, also in and out of being a fugitive, also having trouble with being a public figure after defeating his nemesis, also constantly bouncing into the spiderverse, also dealing with a lot of heavy shit he hasn't worked through at all--both hobie and gwen are doomed by the narrative to die young and have futures ahead of them that'll turn them into something they hate.

he's a counterculture character. he's spider-punk. like gwen, he has an antagonistic relationship with the police and power structures of his world and his narrative is about standing up to them and tearing down the systems they reinforce. it only follows that he'd be down to help gwen with hers… and keep encouraging her to stick to her principles and resist her girlboss relapses. he'd also rather let go of the relationship than force her to stay with him if she's not into it or if it won't be good for her-- both times hobie's crush on her bubbled up, he backed off and quickly readjusted to treating her like a teammate without holding it against her.

he's also queer as hell. like gwen, hobie surrounds himself with a big queercoded friend group who he's in a rock band with. he doesn't exactly seek out relationships but he isn't necessarily closed off to them. however, like gwen, if he ends up married with kids with anyone, something's gone fucking wrong. he also has a vibe with a canonically queer best friend who's in a gay relationship with someone else in the friend group. he's even noticed that gwen's into women and is encouraging about it. and like gwen, we're all just waiting for him to be confirmed as queer. this relationship, should it ever exist, would be far from heteronormative.

hobie is the best option overall. editorially and in-universe, their similarities make them so fucking compatible. if they got together, they'd be great for each other.

(very interesting that he's in the opposite situation that tiana's in-- tiana's a confirmed canon love interest, but only in one continuity. hobie's made it to multiple continuities, but isn't confirmed as a love interest, let alone a serious one, in any of them.)

but that's the thing. it's an if. apart from them having a romantic ~vibe~ in the comics and a romantic subtext in the spiderverse movies, they're not a canon couple.

(in terms of canon, harry is the best option on earth-65 as of now, but em jay is the most necessary one. both don't meet all the criteria, but could be written into it-- but hobie checks all the boxes inherently: you don’t have to write him into this person, and it would be difficult to write him away from it.)

and there's a lot more that needs to be done with them (with gwen in particular) before them getting together would work.

specifically, hobie needs to be confirmed as queer. gwen needs to escape gwiles, to go home to earth-65, and to come out as queer.

harry and hobie are her best options (canon and overall), but the writers and audience wouldn't hesitate to break them up to slide miles in there (on the spiderverse side of the fandom, they already did that shit to ghostpunk in atsv). the same will be true if gwen is ace-- nobody will take it seriously, and they'll just insist that miles can Fix Her. the priority right now is getting gwen out of the gwiles danger zone as quickly and permanently as possible. the way to do it is to give her a girlfriend.

finally giving gwen a female love interest after ten years of queercoding and buildup? taking the comphet subtext of sitting in a tree and making it explicit that gwen can only be with miles if she's closeting herself, and miles would be the kind of guy who makes a girl repress her sexuality so he can date her? that makes gwiles radioactive. you can't revisit the ship without assassinating his** character and inciting a backlash.

(** bffr the fans and gen audience don't care if gwen's character's assassinated to make gwiles happen. it happened in siat and the spiderverse writers and miles's readers thought it was her real personality. it happened in the spiderverse movies and people ate that shit up and act like that's the Best Gwen Yet. but if miles is written ooc into a total asshole, people are gonna get pissed)

and to be clear, right now em jay is the gwiles slayer. she's not the best romantic option for gwen, but she has a decade of tension with gwen that just got canonized, she's the second-most-popular ship with gwen, and she's got the name recognition among casuals that'll get people to pay attention-- people have been waiting for some version of gwen and mary jane to make out for decades (even though a lot of those people are dudes who just want to jack off to ~two girls kissing~, fuck it, if it gets us there, it gets us there). and em jay's on earth-65, where gwen needs to stay. she's the one with the best shot at killing that ship and getting gwen home.

but since e65's getting jettisoned For Good or at least for the forseeable future... it's gonna have to be another girl. while gwen's in 616, she needs a girlfriend. any girl. doesn't matter. as long as she's a girl, and gwen kisses her, we did it, she's canonically queer. and if miles acknowledges that gwen is queer and is supportive of it, that could shut the door on the ship. if gwen and miles can't be on separate worlds, at least they can be unavailable, uninterested and incompatible.

anyway! give gwen literally any girlfriend to get her over the coming-out hump and kill gwiles. then give her closure with harry and em jay, or let her explore some earth-65 based love interests to get her home. then someday, in an ideal world that probably exists only in my dreams, it should be hobie.
