Crybaby had multiple friends. Angelita was her closest. When she noticed Angelita wasn't as into watching the boys as she was, she decided to observe her friend more closely. The smile resting on Angelita's pinkish red lips at the sight of Y/N resting against a tree was enough to inspire her. The next recess that came up, Crybaby dragged Angelita the opposite direction than usual.
"Where are we going?"
"Just trust me!" The girl giggled, racing through the hall, weaving between students. They were the first to enter the playground, but they didn't stay for long.
Crybaby spied the tree Y/N usually occupied, and grabbed Angelita's hand. She didn't give her time to recognize it before she'd dragged her over to it and gestured at the grassy ground before the tree. "Sit here. I'll be back."
"Okay..." Angelita mumbled. She truly had no clue what was happening, but trusted her friend.
Moments passed and it became incredibly clear that Crybaby wasn't returning. Even more so when Y/N approached instead. They looked shocked to see Angelita in their usual spot. Shocked, but not upset.
"Angelita, right?"
"Yeah- and you're... Y/N... Sorry, my friend told me to wait here." Angelita grimaced at the tension she felt. The interaction was their first, and it just had to be awkward.
"It's fine." Y/N smiled a little, "We can wait together if you'd like."
"That sounds good." She spoke without even realizing it. However, she didn't seem to regret it as Y/N moved next to her and sat down. "Thank you."
"It's no problem, really. Had you been anyone else, I probably would've just found a different tree." They chuckled. Angelita swore it was a gorgeous sound.
They grew closer, physically, as time went on. Again, it became apparent that Crybaby was not going to be there. Angelita flinched as Y/N's voice cut through the silence, "I don't think your friend's coming back."
"Me neither." The digging of the tree into her back hadn't bothered her until now. It felt much more harsh when added to the tension. "I hope I'm not ruining your recess."
"You're not. You could never." Y/N was quick to defend. "I don't mind sharing my spot."
"You just... Don't seem relaxed..." She offered.
"Is this better?" Angelita's eyes widened and her cheeks flushed as Y/N turned and lowered their head onto her lap, a cheeky smile pointed up at her. "I can always move."
"No, it's much better."
Recess seemed to go at a more comfortable pace, not too fast, yet not so agonizingly slow. It felt perfect. A part of Angelita thanked Crybaby for abandoning her, and a part of Y/N thanked "Angelita's mystery friend" as well.
Angelita sighed. It wasn't one of sadness or stress, but of content. She found herself content with her back against a tree. She found herself content with the sounds of the school muffled to nothing. She found herself content with Y/N laying their head in her lap.
"What's on your mind?" Y/N asked, voice soft and gentle.
Angelita simply smiled for a second before she replied. "Just life I guess. I never really thought I'd be here with you. And then Crybaby..."
"Is that good or bad?"
She processed the sudden interruption and then chuckled a little, "great."
"Well, then I agree." Y/N closed their eyes, relaxing into her lap. The two ignored the shrill of the bell signaling recess had come to an end. "It's nice here, but it's even nicer with you."

Thinking today a lot about the psychological damage done by moving to a place that is full of a lot of small-town thinking, a lot of insecurity, a lot of small-c intellectual conservatism (mixed with small-c wasp-social conservatism) (and all of that has little to do with how a person votes in the elections).
Spending my formative years along with a lot of the initial decade of my adulthood in major worldclass cities where everything is always moving and shaking and happening and people are accepting (in their weird twitchy ways) of difference and opportunity and DOING THE THINGS because the whole fucking world of diversity and difference is literally bumping against them in the street ---- leave that kind of ANYTHING GOES experience to move to a place that is isolated, backwards (as far as I'm concerned although most americans might think otherwise, especially if they are from deeeeeeeep red states) has just ....
Done a lot of low-key psychological damage to my concept of what is possible much less my concept of self.
And what is so interesting is that it is NOT childhood or teen-years damage. It isn't early-establishing-oneself-as-an-adult damage.
No, it is low level gaslighy psychological pot shot after pot shot during my 30s and 40s from small minded people in a middle of fucking nowhere place that wants to be self important bc everyone here is so very very very insulated, isolated, and INSECURE.
And for me it is so easy to say "wait, something does not add up here."
Well.... thankfully there is the internet.
And, honestly, this is why I have zero qualms about reducing my local professional ties to *cough* very few.

Happy STS! What are your technical preferences for writing? Like, what program do you use, what fonts etc.
Happy STS!
I am Very cheap and only use Free programs as of now! I currently use a mix of
Notion - to organize/brainstorm
Google Docs - for writing Officialโข chapters/scenes
World Anvil - for broader worldbuilding/timelines
My Notes App - when I need to quickly jot down things without the threat of Notion's failure to save things (Notion just crashes sometimes)
Grammarly - for basic grammar check. I have gotten to the point where I can work around the yellow underlines without a subscription (it's mostly just teaching me how to rewrite sentences better)
And I will probably swap to 100% Google Docs soon, because Notion is giving me the short end of the stick (the free version is not letting me see my edits from over a week ago, which is Very irritating).
Other technical things:
I use fonts that are clear and easy to read. If I'm feeling Fancy, I pick fonts that fit the vibe of the story (I currently use Ubuntu for Indie's Bar and Thrills and Nunito Sans for Crater City). I steer away from Times New Roman because it's too formal and puts me in an essay mood, which isn't always "It."
I like to be able to decorate my workspace, because it's very fun! If one were to Peruse my documents, they will find every single one colorful and plastered with Aesthetic imagery :')
I try to keep "canon lore" and "non-canon lore" in separate folders so that I keep track of my scraps easier. I deem my "non-canon lore" "Idea Limbo/Purgatory."
This is probably super confusing, but I categorize each item in my folders based on last edited, section, progress, and themes. It helps to filter out what I need to look for, but it also helps to compare similar scenes so that ideas are consistent, don't overlap, etc. It kind of keeps the [sub]plots linear since I write nonlinearly.
Does this make sense? I'm not too sure. But I would love to hear your technical preferences for writing because I'm always looking for a new approach!
