I am pausing my comical neglect of Kii for a second to flesh out their backstory more and I finally have a decent image for their general character arc, besties who are in a constant state of "I can fix him" when the ppl they're trying to help unionize against their attempts to help (it's because Kii is like 90% using helping ppl to avoid confronting their own issues and the gang are desperately trying to get them to see that)

Entryway to heavens, a.k. the BL genre!

As requested by @weiying-tododeku-2023 , who wanted to dip their toes into the genre, I, Nora, am once again here to compile a recommendation list that you can take a peek. Most titles here won't be any news to my seasoned fujin frens, but it's always interesting to think of which manga or anime would be the best for a newcomer!

BL ANIME

We don't have many options to choose from when it comes to anime, so I might as well start from here.

Stranger by the Shore: This 1-hour, gorgeous movie is an adaptation from Kii Kanna's manga of the same name. Since it's short, I think it's better to focus on what the plot has to offer instead of expecting a deeper dive into the characters individually.

Sasaki and Miyano: Another manga adaptation, but this time it's 12-episode series (with a +1 OVA). Very sweet and emotionally rich coming-of-age story with a fudanshi as its MC. A must see!

NO.6: Less like a BL and more of a sci-fi anime with queer MCs, NO.6 is not exactly suitable for a newcomer, but I still wanted to include it because of its tender story and the companionship between Shion and Nezumi. So you shouldn't expect a big emphasis on romance.

Bonus: This Boy is a Professional Wizard: This is a 4-episode short anime. It's honestly gorgeous and cute, but not very "deep" as every episode is around 8 minutes. You can finish it in one sitting!

There are so many other popular (and great) BLs or action/sports series that have queer characters out there: Given, Banana Fish, Yuuri!! on ICE, Doukyuusei, Case Study of Vanitas, The Case Files of Jeweler Richard, The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window, Antique Bakery, Yes No or Maybe? etc. They are already popular so with a quick search you can find more about them as you finish the ones you've started!

BL MANGA

Now, this... is a challenge. There are SO MANY good stuff that it's hard to pick, so I decided to go with my gut xD

I Didn't Mean To Fall In Love (Suzumaru Minta): There's something in this series that just.. UGH! It hits me. I have reviewed it before so you can head over there to find more information, synopsis, and my thoughts.

Love Tractor (Hmmyongyong & Angrymonster): I started reading it for the sake of the challenge I mentioned above but what a joy this one turned out to be!! Has great balance of fun and drama, gorgeous to boot. The main story is finished but there'll be a continuation! Here's my review.

Here and There and Us (Thanat): This is a very interesting work (as any other Thanat work, I'm a huge fan of the artist) and it's less focused on the romance and more on the main characters and their friend circle navigating their high school life and the the ever-changing relationship between them. If you're looking for something that's more slow burn, this should be your go-to BL.

Under My Skin (Usui Iroha): People tend to stay away from spicy recommendations for newcomers but I say, why not give it a go! Usui Iroha has a way of drawing sultry gazes that'll make your heart skip a beat! I'm taking a break now, but I normally review a new BL title every Friday, and I've also reviewed Under My Skin before because it's THAT good.

Dream Away (Hana Lee): If you like a sprinkle of supernatural on your plate, then this is for you. The art style is simple yet eye catching, it's short and completed, the characters are wholesome; what more you could ask for!

Bonus - Swing Baby (Mudan): This manhwa, again, is a bit different. It does feel like it has supernatural elements at first and is a bit confusing (bc there's an interesting stylistic choice in narration) but it'll feel worth sticking to! Here's another Friday BL review if you'd like to check some screenshots out and read the synopsis.

Kii hiiii!!!! I want to start doing commissions soon but I have no idea how and where to start. I mean yeah I'll make a comission sheet and specify stuff I know those basics. But like how do I kinda know that people would actually comission me for stuff? How did you know when to start and like what was your whole process like? Don't mind me I'm just trying to ask about this to some artists I admire and who do commissions what their experiences were like so don't feel too pressured to answer this lol

hi anon!!! that's a really good question that i unfortunately feel like i'm unqualified to properly answer, because my commission work experience was also ... how you say ... less than desirable LOL. i didn't even make a commission sheet and my overall process was super wonky so you're already doing better than me!

honestly i don't think there's any real way you can gage if you even will get commissioners. the shitty thing about any freelance work is that opportunities aren't guaranteed, and you just have to put your foot out there and hope for the best. which is scary and overwhelming, i know! especially if you're down on yourself and your abilities, because your brain will always try conjuring up reasons as to why you shouldn't. i'm pretty sure almost every artist out there has felt like their art isn't good enough so people won't commission them — trust me, i've totally been there and i'm still there LOL — but those nagging voices in your head telling you that you're full of shit ... are full of shit and you should just ignore them. or at the very least, live unbothered by them.

because the fact is, you are your worst critic! you'll always spot mistakes and flaws in your work that others literally won't even notice. so in regards to when to start, i'd honestly say whenever you feel ready to, you should! there's always art appreciators out there who i'm sure would love to give artists a shot, whether beginner or master, a rookie or wholly experienced. i can't guarantee that you'll have customers, but not trying at all already bars you from any customers in the first place. if you try and you fail, take comfort in the fact that you tried!!! that's already amazing!!!

that being said, i think probably the "easiest" way to get commissioners is to understand your audience. know what your viewers like to see from you, and perfect that! and honestly i feel quite hypocritical saying this because i go to art school and the overall vibe here is "draw for yourself and don't sell out" but the truth hurts and that truth is, if you're looking to grow a client base and make money off of your art, it doesn't hurt to draw stuff you know your audience eats up. it leads to more interest in your art, and more potential people who are willing to pay you for that art. it also might make you seem more credible as someone who draws distinct things and people follow you for those things! i hope some of this makes sense because i am so bad at wording sentences that i end up going on long rambles LOL

personally, i'm very spontaneous and i just do things without even thinking twice, so i opened ko-fi commissions last year literally because i was bored and i wanted to avoid my other trillion responsibilities. i figured if i could get some money off of my art, why not give it a shot? i did NOT expect people to commission me actually, but it was a pleasant surprise that people found my art interesting enough to pay for :) i didn't make a sheet (which i probably should ... heh) but i have drawn enough uncolored line work art + flat color work where i think my audience knew what they were getting into (uncolored line art and flat color were the initial two options i provided btw).

i also think pricing plays a huge part into whether people will commission you, which is honestly so ass because i'm a firm believer that the majority of artists, myself included, undersell their work. like, reeeaaallly undersell it. i'm talking "this artist should charge $100 or more for what they're offering but they're only charging $40?!" kind of deal. art is a product of both time and energy, and is a direct antithesis to capitalist work demands. you can't force an artist to churn out art like a machine would, and an artist's efforts towards making a personalized art piece should also be taken into consideration regarding pricing ... but unfortunately people don't want to pay a lot for commissions. and it's understandable because not everyone has enough money to throw around whenever they feel like it, so oh well. anyway my point is if you charge lower, you're probably more likely to get people willing to pay :( it sucks i know, but that's just how it is. i'm sure your prices can raise exponentially once you have credibility as a reliable commission artist though!

i hope some of this helps ?? i'm not like a seasoned commission artist or anything but this is just from my own experiences ... your experiences might be completely different! so take my advice with a grain of salt as well but uhh yea B)

Given’s Only Shop and Umibe no Etranger movie

I have a fun day at Ikebukuro today so I guess I will write a little report :3 Because you know, how often do you see two great BL series side by side like this?

It is like a dream came true for me, really!

Given’s Only Shop starts today (here in Japan they use the word only shop to mean a special event space that sells goods of only that one series). I already expected that it will be crowded because the first time they opened a Given only shop last year, I had to line up 3 hours to get in. However this time was MUCH MORE than that! Animate shop announced that they will start distributing entrance tickets with random entry number for everyone who line up between 8:50 and 9:20 in the morning. But by 8:50 this morning there was already like 200 people gathering so we ended up having to queue to draw our ticket. The line starts from the entrance of the shop, going up to the stairs, going in each floor, going up to 8th floor then back down one more time, and finally goes a good 20-30m outside. In the end, they decided that they will not be able to let everyone in so they have to included blank tickets in the lots, which means if u draw a blank ticket you won’t be able to get in ;; That alone shows how popular Given is here. I’m lucky enough to avoid drawing the blank ticket and was able to get in though. Took me a good 40 minutes waiting with anxiety 😂

And as usually I collected a lot of Ugetsu goods! He is my light! The photo card with him waving and smiling is the movie bonus for the 5th week. It just started today but they already ran out of bonus in Ikebukuro from the first day. After the movie, Ugetsu has become very popular here and getting hands on his stuff is not as easy as before.

Now speaking about Etranger (I called it like that because the name is quite long and everyone here just uses Etoranze - エトランゼ for short lol), I actually watched it one time last week and today was my second time. And I can say I can watch it a hundred times more if only my wallet allows me to xD

Bought some badges and a super cute mug featuring their 3 cats in the movie. (If you notice, Kii Kanna sensei loves cat. You can see cats in all of sensei’s art. The cats in the movie were super lovey-dovey too!)

For the first week, the bonus is a big coaster of young Mio eating crab rice ;A; There is a scene in the movie when young Mio eating crab rice with his mother it was so cute ;; For the second week, you get a small booklet with comments of all staff and a cute new art from sensei <3

About the movie itself, I love it so much it is so pleasant to watch. The production team did a great job on everything. The sceneries are especially beautiful. They did change a few things and added a few things too but overall it was very satisfying. You can feel love in the air watching it. All the characters are done very nicely you cannot really hate on any. Oh and the kiss scenes are all great. Even “that scene” when they did it for the first time was unexpectedly detailed it made me wonder why it is only PG12 lol. But it was done beautifully and I don’t have any complains at all. If the movie becomes available in your country, I really recommend it. It is a treat to the eye.

Pathfinder Update

Not too long of a session, but strangely the in-universe time expended was about 2 months!

And so we sailed back from that gods forsaken rock in the middle of the South Sea to Idle Crag. We arrived at twilight, pulling in to Idle Crag, and seeking harbour there as we stocked up on supplies for our journey to the Western Kingdoms, and, encouraged by the Valka brothers, had a night on the town.

Before pleasure, we took care of business, getting Tood, Threed, and Fourd sent off to the Eriny Ranch and having Valka’s carriage loaded onto the Ninth Life. Tisi was trying really, really hard not to cry in front of everyone as they horses were sent off. This was not helped by Valka saying that “Don’t worry Tisi, they probably won’t be sold off to a glue factory!”. In response Tisiphone yelled at the catboy.

After this Tisiphone, Lora’sae, Lora’a, Kii, Jodd, Roland, and Nik all went off to a bar to enjoy their last night in the Southerlands. Tisi, Valka, and Jodd all indulged greatly in regional alcohols, provoking a roll on Warhammer Fantasy’s Stinking Drunk table after a failed Fortitude save (Jodd failing this was BIZARRE as he had a +20 to his Fortitude saves since his statline is utterly insane). Both Tisiphone and Valka vomit profusely onto an undead in the canal below (Idle Crag is a bit of a tiered city) and pass out pm the boardwalk. Jodd the Butcher, dragon rider, child of Velakor, is merely woozy and sways a lot. Thank goodness the local constabulary or other nosy members of the Order of Justice weren’t too actively looking for the party.

And so, over the course of a month and a half, the Ninth Life sails on to the Western Kingdoms, that the party might have an audience with the king there, and a proper force might take on Pragia and free Velakor. During this time Tisiphone works on drawing up some clockwork prostheses for Roland, planning and prototyping all the while. As it stands she has the components and the plans, she just needs a proper physician, and a BUNCH of money, to install them.

As the Ninth Life approaches the continent of the Western Kingdoms the Stormbreaker lets up and allows the snow to fall upon the ship’s deck. Tisiphone and Nik are a bit startled and look about, towards land, to see if they can determine the cause of this. Valka catches a snowflake on his tongue and the two of them look mortified. How could anyone eat a flake of ash like that?? And so the two Southerlanders learned about snow. Nik had lived in the hotter, drier parts of the Southerlands, and Tisi just never liked going to mountains or anywhere that might snow (Bostadt is pretty much Mediterranean, and at most there’s been sleet or hail out in Dixon). Nik and Tisi thought it was raining soot from an unimaginable mass burning of bodies, which sometimes happens in the Southerlands, when great hordes of the undead rise up, on the Night of the Living Dead that occurs every year. Instead, Valka’s homeland is a strange, alien place where flakes of water rain from the sky and the weather, every years, gets a chill to it that is truly unbearable. Tisiphone grabbed Nik and they went through the orb to Bostadt to get some winter clothes made up for themselves, and came back with big ass coats.

The Ninth Life docked at Banlova, on the East coast of the Western Kingdoms, and the carriage off loaded, purchased two draft horses (Fived and Sixd) and headed off to Tygrys CIty. Tygrys city, named after King Tygrys Hekhata, master of the Western Kingdoms, which, truth be told, was a collection of 27 lesser kingdoms, republics, and other states crushed into vassaldom by the King, after a 10 year long campaign that saw him become master of a very large realm.

Lora’a went ahead of us on Bluon with Jodd to Tygrys City, while Roland came with Nik, Kii, Lora’sae, and Tisiphone on the carriage and rode with us on the week long trip there. Thankfully the Western Kingdoms are a lot more populous than the Southerlands, so we were able to stay  at inns and stuff the whole way there. Charlatan Valka (separate from Captain Valka, Commander Valka, and Consort Valka, naturally) was worried about his outstanding bounty coming up. Tisiphone went to the local Bounty Hunter’s Guildhouse and bought a local bounty catalogue (for the Western Kingdoms, her one was for the Southerlands, and about a year out of date anyways). Valka had an accrued bounty of about 1,000,000 gold on his head, while Lora’a (the pirate) had a bounty head of 5 million (for piracy and other piracy related charges), Lora’to (the mercenary commander) had a price of 10 million on his head for uh...kind of wiping out most of a nation in something tantamount to genocide during that 10 year war period, and lastly Lora’li was wanted for only 10,000, mostly for adultery... TIsiphone was tempted, just a little, to turn him in. But, really, by now, the catboy has come to mean too much to her for her to give the urge much thought. To ensure his relative safety Tisiphone gave Valka a pair of her manacles and a spare key, and he’s been wearing them on one arm so that he can at a moment’s notice appear as her prisoner that she is definitely going to be turning in soon.

So we arrived in Tygrys City and Valka went ahead to talk with Prince Hekhata about affairs, and also business. He spoke with the young prince and found his brother, Lora’a in the Prince’s company, and was propositioned to keep both of them company that night. Lora’sae promptly broke out into a cold sweat and excused himself to the nearest washroom in the king’s fortress and tried to gather his nerves from the shockingly forward invitation of two Valkas and a prince sharing quarters, among other things.

The king’s abode and ruling seat was a fortress in what was now named Tygrys City, after his majesty. It was once a small town of little note, but the king had originated from there and raised it to new prominence, as it slowly became the center of his new lands. The fortress was once built for pragmatic reasons, but now it stands as a suitable enough seat of rulership for the Western Kingdoms. Tygrys City was a very recently built up city, with the vast majority of buildings actually being less than 10 years old. A lot of buildings in the Western Kingdoms incorporate stonework, something of a change from the more colonial buildings of the Southerlands.

Tisiphone, Roland, Nik, Kii, Jodd, and the Valkas came to meet with Prince Hekhata, to convince him of the righteousness of the de Velkor’s cause, and to grant them an audience with his father. He was quite agreeable, and immediately after we went to speak with King Tygrys Hekhata. While the promise of a dragon rider aiding in the campaign against the hated Pragians was tempting what really sold him was when Tisiphone pulled out the ancient airship plans and the shoulder cannon and showed him a brand new means of going at it with the Pragians, and that the Pragian airships would no longer let the Pragians determine the battlelines or terms of warfare. King Hekhata was practically de-aged 20 years as he looked upon these plans and he swept up the new weapons and the party with great and bloody enthusiasm, heartily agreeing to aid the de Velakors in returning their kingdom (though the terms of Velakor’s rulership seemed a bit uncertain).

Kii, for her part, felt great misgivings over allowing King Hekhata to get a hold of these plans. Not only because of the uncertain fate of Velakor after it was “liberated”, but also for the King’s words. In the King’s words he would not just push back the Pragians, but “break the spirit of their people” and bring them low, that they might not commit such acts ever again. As much as Kii hated the Pragian Empire she did not want to see the people of yet another nation suffer as hers had.
