🐠 Daily Fish Fact: 🐠
Leafy Seadragon: The name is derived from their appearance, with long leaf-like protrusions coming from all over the body that serve only as camouflage. The leafy seadragon propels itself utilizing a pectoral fin on the ridge of its neck and a dorsal fin on its back closer to the tail end. These small fins are almost completely transparent and difficult to see as they undulate minutely to move the creature sedately through the water, completing the illusion of floating seaweed. Popularly known as "leafies", they are the marine emblem of the state of South Australia and a focus for local marine conservation.

A merman?! Yup! It has been ages since I’ve drawn a guy.
This illustration was really fun, it started in a totally different direction but once I had the lightbulb moment to draw my favourite seahorse (The Leafy Seadragon) it all started coming together. Leafy Seadragons live off the Australian coast so of course I had to go with a dashing Indigenous Australian man as the human-inspiration.

barely recovered from being sick but i cOULDNT resist drawing leafy sea dragon Y/N from one of @naffeclipse 's many variants of their AU Apex Polarity (i love every single version sm nkjetnjetnj)
I was gonna just gonna do the one but I decided to make a night and day coloured version with some funky colours and more natural ones because this lil dude was so fun to draw :3

Sometime in middle school I wrote a science report on two animals. The kangaroo rat and seaweed seahorse. I wad obsessed by these 2 creatures.
And in college I was convinced that that they were indeed real but no one knew what the hell I was talking about. In addition even the internet made it feel like I created some fever dream Pokemon.
It turned out that during the time I wrote my report and college, the popular common name had switched to "hopping mice" and "leafy seadragon".
I'm happy to say that kangaroo rat is back to kangaroo rat and well...leafy seadragon is such a badass name, so I have nothing to complain about.
