CHAPTER 2
Fic synopsis:
averyjameson!mafia AU After Avery's mother's death, she is left with many questions. What happened to her mother's family? Who were they? Why did her mother never talk about them? Why did Jameson Winchester Hawthorne appear in her life? ...What is her mother's secret?
~~~
CHAPTER 1- ...Ready for it?
When Avery was a kid, her mom was constantly inventing games. Not your average games like Hide-And-Seek or Tag. They were always small tests, a competition. Once they’d played the Who-Can-Stack-The-Most-Pancakes or Who-Could-Build-The-Tallest-Tower-of-Cards. There was always something to find, something to figure out- something to fix or something to take apart. A challenge. The rush of excitement and the thrill that came with success is what made Avery feel alive.
The last game her mother had made for her was the Don’t-You-Dare-Miss-Me game, where she sent Avery on a challenge to find a mysterious item. It was the longest game yet, suspiciously so. When her mom gave her such complicated games, like that one time she made Avery an escape room, she’d leave little clues that would confirm she was on the right track. Yet this game had been completely devoid of all that. All she was told was to find “where the heart feels whole”.
There was only one possible answer to that. Home. Not their little apartment, no. The antique shop her mother owned, right under where they lived. That’s where they felt at home. Each of the little trinkets they received from donations or found had a story behind them. Sometimes, when she couldn’t sleep, Avery would sneak downstairs to the antique shop and try to guess the object’s history. Once they’d received one of those old vintage desks, the ones that had even more shelves on top of the tabletop itself, and a bunch of hidden compartments everywhere. It even had its very own built in gas lamp. She could vividly imagine the original owner sitting at it, working with a quill and a pot of ink, furrowing his brow in concentration or struggle. It was objects like these that had a meaning, that were valued and cherished. They had stories.
When she’d entered the shop, she didn’t find any clue to indicate she was on the right track. The place had felt strange without her mother there ever since she’d been hospitalized.
Avery searched high and low. Nothing. Finally, she went to a relatively small room behind the counter and pushed open the door. There was a fireplace. It had been there ever since her mom had rented this place, but it didn’t work. Sometimes they’d bring chairs and sit around it, pretending it worked. Their home. That’s when her mom told her stories about who she was before she had Avery. About  Ricky. About a secret lover. Not once did she ever mention her family.
For Avery, home was where her mom was. Family.
She immediately noticed that one of the wood planks of the flooring was askew. She slipped her fingers beneath it, blindly feeling around for something. Sure enough, she felt it. A paper with a phone number. Libby Grambs, it read, above the string of numbers.
By the time Avery made it back to the hospital, the heart monitor wasn’t beeping with that annoying yet reassuring ding. The bleak room was even more uneasily silent, devoid of life.
It was at that moment that Avery decided to never play again.
“I thought you promised to stay away from him, Lib.”
Avery was tired of watching Libby dust the antique shop over and over again, hobbling around with her black eye and bumping into everything. There were two things Libby always did when she had something on her mind- she either bakes a bunch of cupcakes that Avery would have no choice but stuff herself with later or dusts the antique shop until even the antiques themselves looked brand new.
“I couldn’t help it, Ave. He… he called me and said sorry and that he wanted to meet up.”
Avery rolled her eyes and tapped on the cash register in anger, though holding back from crushing the keys. They definitely couldn’t afford another one unless one of them suddenly married some rich man.
It was always the same story. Libby did or said something Drake didn’t like. Then he’d hit her. Only once, but it was already too much. Then he’d apologize and do his usual speech, and Libby would forgive him.
“This is the seventh time you’ve broken up with him,” she spat at her sister. “Make it be the last.”
Libby nearly knocked over another vintage jewelry box. “I can’t help it.” She ducked down to steady the box, probably already thinking about what types of cupcakes she was going to bake this time.
“How about you go and flip the OPEN sign outside? We should close up. I doubt we’re going to get any more customers at this hour.”
Libby nodded and went to the front door. Just as she was going out, she slammed straight into a man who had just opened the door to come inside.
“Oh my gosh I am so sorry I didn’t mean to–”
Avery glanced over while her sister started rambling away. A man with ashy brown hair and a cowboy hat was helping her sister up in a gentlemanly manner. He had matching cowboy boots, too. He looked… quite odd, honestly. Dressed as both a cowboy and in a fancy way at once. She couldn’t tell if he was some rich guy mocking cowboys or just a desperate wannabe. His skin glowed a beautiful tan, though Avery was skeptical as to whether it was real or not. These days bronzing drops were all the rage.
“Be careful, darlin’,” the handsome stranger said to her sister, whose blush seemed very visible because of her pale skin, looking at him as though he was a heaven-sent messenger offering tickets to paradise. She was so red even her blue roots seemed to be turning purplish.
Libby shyly thanks him and practically runs out the door, red-faced. The stranger’s gaze follows her curiously, and then he picked up an item that had fallen off a nearby shelf when he’d bumped into her. He then turned around and headed for the counter.
“The name’s Nash.” He glanced out at the sign Libby was flipping outside that now read ‘CLOSED’. “Well, mind if I take a look around even though you seem to be closing up? I promise I won’t take long.”
Avery nodded, watching him as he wandered around the little shop, his boots clicking rhythmically. He stopped at a particular shelf and picked up a knife, flipping it over in his large palm. It had patterns engraved onto the blade and a gem encrusted hilt, one of the more expensive items the shop had to sell lately.
“I’ll buy it,” he said, looking back up. The strange cowboy came and placed it on the counter, pulling out a shiny black card.
“Is that your sister?” he asked as she rummaged around, trying to find the magnetic stripe reader. Customers didn’t usually arrive waving around a fancy card.
“Yeah.” Avery paused, looking at him suspiciously. “Why do you ask?”
Nash raised an eyebrow playfully. “Ever heard of genuine, well intentioned romantic interest, kid?” he said, a slight southern accent dragging out some vowels and adding an atypical rhythm to his speech. Was that real, too? “What’s her name?”
“Libby. And stay far, far away from her,” she warned as she handed him the receipt and the knife. ‘Nash’ gave her a grin.
“Farewell, little miss. I’ll make sure to come around again, and maybe I’ll have my brothers tag along next time.” With that, he tipped his cowboy hat at her and winked, then turned around to walk out. Avery glared at him through the store’s glass door as he chatted away with Libby outside.
Her fists tightened on the edges of the countertop; fragments of their yapping being heard through the open window. Libby did not need another act to her tragic love life. Drake was already more than enough.
Sure, this guy looked nicer, but you could never know for sure. Drake had looked handsome and calm at first, too.
Avery rubbed her temples, trying to soothe the already forming headache as Libby burst back into the store, blabbing away.
“Avery, isn’t he so dreamy? I never liked cowboys but…”
Someone kill me now.
@rennisaturate tyler & ame deeper than i've felt it before.
tyler could feel every nerve in his body. fear and excitment flooding his senses, making it hard for him to know which way was up and which was down. he climbed out of the truck, rounded to the passenger side and grabbed ame's door for her and offered out a hand. "i'm so glad we are doing this, ame, i don't think i can even explain it to--" daddy! maggie's little voice stopped him dead in his tracks, looking back to spot the bright red haired little girl as she ran full speed towards him, her little cowboy hat flying off her head as she did. she bouldered into his legs, knocking him forward, he was just quick enough to grab the door frame with one hand, his other reaching to catch ame before he could fall into her. "mags." he hummed happily, shooting ame a cheeky grin before he dropped to the ground, scooping the six year old up into his arms. he stepped back to let her move out of the door of the truck, a hand moving to brush back maggie's hair, tucking the vibrant red back behind her ears. "i'm missed you, kiddo. do you want to meet my friend? ame's coming to stay with us." he said, his voice switching into that familiar dad tone he used without even thinking about it. maggie turned to look at ame, as if she hadn't even noticed her until just then. she gave her a quick once over before she leaned into tyler's ear, less than perfectly whispering her thoughts and questions. "she's pretty. does she like horses? bo let me shoot his gun. does she like pancakes? libby laura made pancakes for dinner." she nattered on, and tyler gave a shake of his head.
For the better part of her life she had seen the world through a very different lens. Much of her world consisted of traveling to far flung places all over the globe being carried by her mother or taken gently by the hand and led on some very grand adventure. Her mother wasn't just flashing photo bulbs and long dark hair with mysterious eyes. The voice that she was used to singing her to sleep was vastly different than the one that used to entertain concert goers. They didn't see the side of her that made the very best chocolate chip pancakes at midnight, or the side that made all the hobgoblins in her closet go away with just a stern 'Go to bed, wee beasties!'. Not everyone got to see their mother, godmother and grandmother perform an impromptu concert in the back garden after a few glasses of wine.
"Do you know just how much I love you?"
Her mother had asked her late one night as she tucked Libby deep under the covers of an impossibly soft bed deep in the heart of Rome. All Libby cared was that Mom was there and the tapestry shawl that smelled just like her was wrapped around Babbity Rabbit.
"No...how much?"
"Thiiiiss Muucchh."
Was all Colleen could say before she outstretched her arms much like a bat and enveloped Libby in the warmest of bear hugs. The jangle of her many bracelets and necklaces always made Libby smile.
"Love you, Mama. Even beyond infinity."
"Love you too, Libby baby. Sleep tight."
With a kiss and in a cloud of warm amber Libby fell into a drowsy dose. The nightlight aunt Helene and uncle Joey had sent all the way from Sweden flickered on merrily enveloping the five year old in a familiar homey glow. Unbeknownst to her the world she had once known was rapidly changing. The Colleen Sheehan being witnessed this evening was an unfamiliar one as the 'Mom' version was as familiar to little Libby as the back of her own hand.
"I just got off the phone with your mom...Colly he's in good spirits. He knows you and Lib are headed home."
Schooled features so fine they could almost be cut from marble swirled toward him almost pinning Jack to the spot.
"You're coming with us, right?"
Jack Donnelly was never one to lie, bend the truth, yes but never outright lie. Especially to his wife and mother of his only child.
"Y-yes. I just need to finish packing some things back at the house and setting up someone to watch Angus and Bon."
The mention of the Donnelly family's Weimaraner duo and Libby's dearest companions besides the ancient orange tabby named Cornelius at Libby's insistence as to "That's what he told me his name is, Mummy."
"She doesn't know he's sick...sick. I mean she knows Grandpa Jim's not feeling well and that there are some changes at his and Granny's house but that doesn't mean she has to be afraid. Maybe...maybe this is a mistake. It's too much."
The flutter of her hands and the tremble in her bottom lip were Col's tell. She was crumbling. Her world was falling apart and she had kept it together for so long and had kept spirits high all the way around that now the fatigue was setting in. Jack wasn't going to be the one to tell his wife of four years that her father's mental state was fading in and out like a candle flame. Mostly due to the use of morphine to keep the pain at bay and the masses pressing at odd angles. He didn't need to be the one to remind her when it hit her daily. When she wasn't trying to do small shows whenever her manager booked her she was home at the rambling Murphy compound nicknamed 'Shangri-La.' splitting time between her parents place and their own rambling place in the Canyon known as The Lodge.
"Colly he keeps saying he wants to go home."
Colleen bit her lip for a moment and sighed as she grabbed the last of her things and shoved it into the oversized duffel bag.
"I take it you know what that means?"
"Yes...he wants to go back to Gloucester. He was born in a tiny town just outside it called Sloughbridge. He and my mom still have the family house out there. My Great Grandfather built it. That's where he wants to be....I mean he was born there. So it makes sense."
"I've got to call Helene and Joey and...my mom...."
Passing her a hand rolled cigarette and a glass of red wine Jack met her eyes.
"You need to take a moment with these two things I'm offering you and take in the night sky on the balcony. Just for a minute."
for: @santiagodeleon
where: fired up pizzeria
"So, like, where'd you end up after us, anyways?"
Ultimately, she knew the final answer, considering the two were sat across from one another in the same booth in the same restaurant in the same town.
The question is just barely distinguishable around her impatient first bite of pizza, words huffed out with an attempt to save the roof of her mouth from its fate at the hand of practically still molten cheese.
(It does not stop her from going in for bite number two a mere second later.)
"Did you, like, go on a journey of self-discovery and find yourself in Ireland?" That would explain the pub, at least. "Get married? Have any kids of your own to teach how to cut their pancakes?"
He was the first boyfriend of Libby's that she could remember even cooking for them at all, really.
"The thing is, when I found out another girl would be counseloring with us, I got really excited because I don't have a lot of girl friends back home. Actually most of them kind of tease me. I don't know why, but Daniel used to always stick up for me, that's how we became BFFs."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"That's nice but—"
"You really think so? Cause I really want us to be friends!" Libbie said excitedly. "In fact, let's get breakfast together! I hear there are pancakes today, those little muffins with the chocolate chips, oh and orange juice too, and—"
"Libbie!" Evie yelled.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Look I'm sorry you don't have a lot of girl friends at home, but I am trying to get ready for the day, and I was hoping to do that without anyone breathing down my neck! So do you mind?" Evie let out a huff.
"Oh." Libbie's voice got small. "I'm sorry. I'll leave you alone."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I didn't mean to crowd you, I just, no I'm sorry, I'll stop talking now and just go."
Evie could see the look of hurt on Libbie's face and let out a sigh.
"Libbie, wait. I didn't mean to explode on you. I've just been having a hard time dealing with some things."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"You were just trying to be friendly, I shouldn't have taken what I'm going thru out on you like that."
"No, it's OK. Mom says that sometimes rather than kill people with kindness, I annihilate them with it. She says it can be annoying, but I don't realize till it's too late."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Maybe it's overstepping to say this, but Mom also says that when you're worried about something, you should let it out. Do you wanna talk about it?"
"Oh, umm…"
"Never mind, you probably wouldn't wanna talk about it with me, would you?"
"Actually, maybe it might help."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Really? I know some people think I'm kind of a ditz, but I'm actually a really good listener. And I promise I won't interrupt and I'll do my best to give any advice I might have."
Evie smiled. "Well, I might regret this, but you're right, I can't keep this in any longer."
🥞 PANCAKE - what is their comfort breakfast?
M&M pancakes with chocolate syrup. He loves them. It was his Vami's idea to mix M&Ms into the pancake batter.
🍰 CAKE SLICE - favourite cake flavour? are they specific about types of cakes?
Curiously, Izzy is the only one in the family who loves Any colour Velvet cake. He likes colourful cakes, he and his twin are complete disasters. The more colourful the food, the bigger the chances they'll want to taste. This idiot once ate a tide pod. As a teenager. Not a kid. A teenager!
💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?
Izzy desn't deal well with all emotions. He's not very expressive and tends to be quiet a serious. He passes as this cool, chill teen, but in reality he is in constant emotional turmoil.
🌙 MOON - what is your oc's greatest wish? how far are they willing to go for it?
Izzy doesn't have any 'wishes' so to say. Sometimes he wishes to leave. Get on a plane and just live, to another country, or maybe even another world.
🕷️ SPIDER - what is their biggest fear? do they have any irrational / mundane fears?
His biggest fear is his 'evil vami' or 'blue vami'. Apollo.
Other than this, is greatest fear is loosing the relationship he has with his twin. He actually depends a lot of Libby and often feels like they're his voice.
🎭 MASKS - do they act differently around certain people? what's different between the way they act around friends, family, strangers, etc.?
There's this very special person with whom Izzy, who he truly is, a foodie and adventurer, shines through.
🎵 MUSIC NOTE - what is their playlist like? their favourite artists? do you associate a particular song with them?
Zedd, Aviicii, Hardwell and David Guetta.
Izzy is a lot into trance and eletronic music. He loves
Spaceman by Hardwell is one of his favourite songs. He does identify with these lyrics: "Yes, I'm an alien when I'm touching the earth Call me a spaceman when I travel universe"
And did I mention I’m nervous!! The CTO (who I’m on really great terms with, good bloke) who I flew in yesterday with is a sick as a dog, so my buffer meeting a crowd of engineers and my team will not be there, he’s having a sleepin. I’m nervous. However, I’ve put on mascara, my go-to mask! I always put mascara on for customer interactions and social interactions. It’s like I’m putting on the extrovert, lovely, easy to talk to Libby and hide the shrinking introvert away. It works! The physical act of doing this now triggers something in my brain after so many years of doing it. I now fully appreciate why some women wear pancake style makeup, it’s a mask that’s hiding what they see as their not so great self.
