Lani's Birthday Oneshots: 2023 Edition!

9. Love in a Hopeless Place by @dragonsandotters-dh [Remus/Narcissa, T, 4.6k] 💔🐺 So much hurt but also so much comfort. Draco gets bitten by Greyback. A heart-wrenching and hopeful look into the aftermath.

10. Male Bonding by musigneus [Remus/Severus, E, 9.8k] 🔥👀 This is angsty fuck-or-die to the max. Trapped in a cellar before the full moon. But it's SO GOOD and a somewhat hopeful ending.

11. Open a Vault For Me by Sevanna_OHera [Charity/Severus, M, 3.4k] 💔🧪 I found this pairing recently, and the angst level is off the charts. So much hope and longing in this fic and also a canon-compliant ending.

12. Table for One by @littlesixxwrites [Dean/Blaise, T, 3.2k] 🌼🎄 I LOVE THIS SHIP. Bean is the cutest. This fic has instantly smitten Blaise and equally enamored Dean. Lovely fluffy fic that made me squeal with happiness.

13. Maybe This Time (alternatively: once more, with feeling!) by @wanderingdonut [Regulus, G, 4.6k] 🤣👻 THIS FIC!! I died laughing from this fic, then I came back to life cackling and died all over again. Ghost Regulus is perfect. Snarky and entitled and wallowing in death lol.

14. toxicology by @batmansymbol [Hermione, G, 2.9k] 💔💌 A fascinating dive into the possible implication of Harry being a horcrux for so many years. I love how we view everything through Hermione's unreliable narration.

15. just a few sweaters by Prettything_uglylie [Molly, G, 2.4k] 🌼🧶 This story is a cup of hot cocoa in front of the fire. Warm and sweet and content. I adore it with my whole heart.

THE FLAW OF FULL POWER FORMS: 📉

Often times, the Full Power forms are more of a liability than a benefit. Most quickly burn through ki & put strain on the body while giving brute strength at the cost of speed. All which can make the user vulnerable in a life-or-death battle.

In the case of Kale, Broly, & Gas, their increased muscle mass didn't cost them speed. Instead, their Full Power forms caused them to temporarily lose their sanity; something that can put their own life at risk as well as others they may care about.

However, there are characters who have been able to make use of the Full Power forms immediately without losing speed, stamina, or sanity. Examples being SS Rage Trunks, Merged Zamasu, GoD Toppo, SSBE Vegeta, and Jiren (Full Power & Awakened).

EXTRA THOUGHTS:

Certain names of the transformations are just what I call them. Like Kale's Controlled Berserker SSJ, Jiren's Awakened Full Power state, and all of the names for Gas' forms.

Super Saiyan Grade 2 & 3 forms are essentially Roshi's buffer forms repurposed for a Super Saiyan.

I decided to not classify Freeza's "True Golden Freeza" Form as a Full Power Form of Golden Freeza because it appears to be more akin to Super Saiyan Grade 4/Mastered Super Saiyan.

Knowing that Freeza can increase his power by percentages, this would imply the same for other characters who use Full Power forms. Roshi's semi-buff form would possibly be about 70% while his Full Power form is 100%. Super Saiyan Grade 2 may be about 80% or so depending on the character, while Super Saiyan Grade 3 is 100%.

There's a reason you don't see a Full Power SSJ2 or a Full Power SSJ3 used in combat. Most Full Power forms are not stable and would only be good if they can land a hit. And with the stamina drain of SSJ3, a "SSJ3 Grade 3" would be a very pointless form that greatly multiplies the stamina drain.

I didn't include Majin Vegeta as a Full Power form despite it being SSJ2 Vegeta at Full Power. The power Vegeta recieved was not entirely his own & was power beyond his limits granted to him by magic. He was not using a Grade 3 form either, so I did not consider it to be a Full Power form in the same sense as the others on the list.

From what I can tell, Super Saiyan Rage could be some sort of "SSJ2 form of SSJ2." Meaning its a unique form above SSJ3. Before transforming into Super Saiyan Rage, a SSJ2 Trunks bulks up into a "SSJ2 Grade 3." Then, Trunks controls the power, slims down, gains a new aura, gets sharper and longer hair, & temporarily lacks pupils/irises. This is like Kale's Controlled Berserker SSJ form, but seemingly on a higher level. Future Trunks had already gotten his SSJ2 form to be almost as strong as SSJ3, so a "Controlled Full Power SSJ2 form" (SS Rage) would probably put him on a level around or a bit above SSG. (Maybe I should make a post about Super Saiyan Rage in the future. 🤔) On the other hand, Controlled Berserker SSJ Kale is shown to be somewhat below SSG Goku in DBS EP 114 when she & SSJ2 Caulifla fought SSG Goku when he had his gaurd up. So... from what I can tell, Super Saiyan Rage is a transformation of SSJ2 that began as "SSJ2 Grade 3" before Trunks controlled his Full Power & transformed. Thus, I classified Super Saiyan Rage as a Full Power transformation similar to SSBE. (If you disagree & have evidence of some sort, share it with me so I can adjust my thoughts as needed.)

After transforming into SSBE, Vegeta said "This is everything I have, Jiren!" So, I classified Vegeta's SSBE as some sort of improved version of the Full Power form while using SSB. It's basically Vegeta as SSB Grade 3, but slimmed down due to god ki giving him better control of the form, so there is no speed drawback. In a way, it's similar to how Trunks transformed into Super Saiyan Rage. Like Father, like son I suppose.

I wonder if DBS Broly's green haired SSJ form is his SSJ form mixed with the power of his Wrathful State (the Humanoid Oozaru form). With how the Wrathful State [Stage 2] made Broly grow in height and muscle mass, and how the Legendary SSJ form makes Broly turn giant and buff... Maybe his Full Power SSJ form is indeed SSJ combine with a [Stage 2] or a hypothetical [Stage 3] of Broly's Wrathful State power? 🤔

The DBS Manga continuity version of Broly's forms differs from its animated counterpart from what I can tell. DBS manga Broly is more similar to DBS manga Kale. [DBS manga Broly & DBS manga Kale have Base • Super Saiyan • Full Power Super Saiyan.]

I believe Zangya was in a partial Full Power form because she had to power-up against Krillin. When she did, her hair stayed floating upwards during her entire battle with Krillin. Her hair returned to normal only after she defeated him. She clearly had to power-up. But, does Zangya have her own green-skinned transformation like Bojack & Gokua? It's possible. Or perhaps she wasn't able to use a Full Power form like them just yet. We didn't see Bido or Bujin power-up to a Full Power form either. It seems like most of the crew don't have access to that Full Power transformation. So, this powered-up state Zangya used against Krillin could be her "Partial Full Power" if she can transform, or even her current "full power" if she cannot transform a true Full Power form. I currently believe that it is Zangya's "Partial Full Power" form & she hadn't unlocked the Full Power transformation yet.

I disagree with the idea of Krillin using the the Full Power form as a "power-up" like Roshi does because it wouldn't allow him to even touch a stronger opponent due to the buff form's speed reduction. As shown in Resurrection F, the Full Power form still quickly depleted Roshi's stamina & Krillin had to come in to save him. Some ppl say it will make Krillin taller, so it's a good form for him. However, being of short stature is actually an advantage because Krillin is harder to hit and his opponent will underestimate his strength like Piccolo did during the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, & like how Vegeta & Nappa underestimated Krillin's strength & skill when he fought them. Plus, Krillin being short is not only part of his character appeal, but it is also a reference to Journey To The West.

Since the buff form is pointless for most characters (unless its a controlled Full Power Form), the best goal for the Krillin and the other Earthling fighters would be for them to utilize masterful ki control & performance in their normal state rather than greatly increasing their muscle mass with ki. As displayed by Krillin, Non-Self State is the next level of Earthling "transformation." But, rather than physical, it is a spiritual transformation; a transformation of internal energy. Hopefully Krillin's Non-Self State makes a return in some form & the other Earthling warriors recieve a similar power-up in the future as well. I have my doubts, but fingers crossed. 🤞

🍉 [WATERMELON] What will your OC take to the grave?

ASTERION will take with him 1) the terrible secrets he sees in his friends' dreams, and 2) the stuff he sees in his visions. The first because their pasts and stories aren't his to tell (he always feels kind of invasive when he sees their dreams, but he reminds himself that it's the only way for him to protect them. And then he changes their dream into something more pleasant). The second is because no one is really supposed to know the future. That burden is his alone to shoulder.

ANTORU won't ever tell anyone how much the "Demon" title eats at her. There's been times she genuinely considered faking her death to join the "dark side," even before she found out about the nickname. Does the name make the monster or does a monster earn its name?

KOKISACHI would never willingly tell anyone why she "is the way she is." Why's she so obsessed with the concept of gambling and risk? Guess we'll never know.

AVETAN sometimes wishes he was mortal: human. A life as long as his can hardly be called a life at all. Isn't mortality what gives life its meaning? But he's a deity, he has responsibilities. So he will perform them.

ADAZAN probably won't ever admit that his parents messed up their parenting with him more than most would think. His childhood was still bad, he still has a very skewed sense of self and stuff. Sure, he knows how to act the part of the Zaviran Heir and be "normal," but it hasn't ever really sunken in. But his siblings have been through worse; he's seen it. He'll be fine: he shouldn't complain.

🥕 [CARROT] How tough is your OC against certain situations? How weak are they against others?

ASTERION's strength is in his quiet, adaptable nature. He's very flexible and able to quickly change to accommodate to his situation. However, because of this, he relies kind of a lot on situations being familiar. If he's thrown into a completely new situation, he'll probably freeze but do his best. Not the type to let himself be walked all over, either, so he stands up for himself if needed.

ANTORU's headstrong but aware. She's able to turn problems into opportunities and change circumstances to work in her favor. She faces the most trouble when against figures of authority, though. She gets kind of tunnel-visioned into a "I'm not letting you control me" mindset and becomes spiteful and lashes out a lot in those kinds of situations.

KOKISACHI is really laid back and observant above all else. Usually acts natural and "dumb" until she figures out what's going on then makes a plan and executes. She's very mentally strong and clean-cut, not shaken by others.

AVETAN gets very serious/almost angry in bad situations. The type to lock in and figures out a way to get things done. Usually isn't the best at making good plans like Kokisachi. He's more of a brute force in a delicate way kinda guy. Nonconfrontational mostly, but protects his peace.

ADAZAN panics. Despite all his good training and whatnot, his initial reaction is just a flash of white-hot terror. Once he calms down, he forces his mind to think of solutions and plans. Usually is very poker-faced throughout this. Against people? He's used to being in a position of authority so he's able to put up a strong front that's usually enough to deter anyone who tries to defy him.

🧅 [ONION] What is surefire to make your OC cry? Who knows of this information?

ASTERION? The sufferings of his friends. The unfairness of life, the sheer unpredictability of fate. What people fail to understand is that the future is always changing, at least in minor ways (there are "Fixed Points" that are sure to happen, but everything else can be nebulous), so his gift isn't entirely reliable. I think if anyone really got to know him, they wouldn't be surprised that he cries over these kinds of things.

ANTORU: i think hearing her parents or her teachers say they're proud of her would bring her to tears. something about that academic validation/always striving for recognition ykyk. Satoru definitely knows and did his best to fulfill that kind of proud parental figure, but it just isn't the same.

KOKISACHI: if she was ever forced to really look back on her life and admit that she had a crappy life growing up/was emotionally abused she'd break down at least a little. No one really knows this, not even herself.

AVETAN: Not being able to protect the ones he loves. He's a powerful entity, sure, but he's far from the strongest. His greatest fear is probably not being able to save his loved ones. Aera probably knows this the most.

ADAZAN: Seeing his siblings hurt and being unable to stop it. Simple and direct. Xyria and Yunitan definitely at least subconsciously know this, and do their best to save him any trouble. They hate seeing him stressed, too.

🍋 [LEMON] What is their kryptonite/ ultimate weakness?

ASTERION: His hunger for love, probably.

ANTORU: Her desire to be stronger.

KOKISACHI: Her loyalty. And also sometimes she's overly cautious.

AVETAN: His soft heart. He's sooo compassionate and empathetic.

ADAZAN: His workaholic tendencies, neglecting himself to get stuff done.

🍏 [GREEN APPLE] How do they differ from the norm and how are they punished for it?

ASTERION: He suffered a lot of bullying/ostracism when he first crossed the border from Nihaga. Mostly it was because of his tattoos-- they were manifestations of old legends that everyone knew of the Dreamer Clan. It's better now, and he's learned to cover up when he's not around those who know him.

ANTORU: She's powerful, but she can't control it. She's been called the "Gojo Demon"/"Demon of the Gojo Clan" for it. She's used to the fearful reaction she gets when she introduces herself as "Gojo Antoru." She was under quite a lot of pressure from her parents due to her inability/unwillingness to really train her abilities. Even at a young age, she realized how terrible her powers could be. It's mostly her beating herself up now, but that's just something that grew out of the environment she was used to.

KOKISACHI: I wouldn't really say she differs much from the norm. It's mostly just people not understanding why she doesn't just use fully offensive Curse Techniques instead of attaching a condition that could work against her.

AVETAN: Again, he's a deity, he's kind of allowed to do whatever he wants. He is, however, much closer with humans than the other Primordials. He's sometimes considered the "weird child" of the Primordials.

ADAZAN: None would dare to genuinely make fun/speak ill of Adazan. Everyone loves him. He's the perfect Zaviran Heir.

So I was re-listening to an episode of @threebooksoneplot the other day and they were talking about how weird it is that Beau not only names specific actresses in comparison to Carine, but that he compares her to Classic Hollywood actresses. Why not modern actresses?

I agree, given how Beau is fleshed out in the book, it's a little weird. I think it's a missed opportunity to further flesh out and differentiate Beau from Bella.

We know Bella is a bookworm and doesn't watch a lot of TV, but she does have favorite movies and we know that she and Beau and Bella both like Monty Python. However it's much more emphasized with Beau. Likewise Beau has a favorite book (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) but isn't shown read as much classic lit as Bella, who reads whenever she has spare time.

I think the missed opportunity here is to make Beau a classic film buff. Much in the same way Bella's obsession with romantic heroes from Classic literature informs her attraction to Edward and his old-fashioned charming ways and speech patterns Beau's interest in classic Hollywood could inform has attraction to Edythe's old fashioned beauty with her arched eyebrows and "long" eyes. Perhaps what Meyer is trying to convey is the kind of slender gaze of an old Hollywood actress like Myrna Loy

Well. He is. Very green. I would say he's best represented by green. Much green. So much green. Green.

He always liked green, soft grass and the vast canopy. He doesn't have strong feelings about colors anymore. It's the thought of yellow and soft pink he likes now.

Well, since we are on this site, punished does not mean a whumper with a whip standing behind him, mkay?

His magic is different. It is unheard of for a single individual to have both life and death magic, and there's something else as well, something he can't really put into words.

He wasn't always aware, and when he was young, the other saplings often made fun of him for not understanding things that were so basic.

He was captured because of his (well known) healing magic, but the moment he used his magic to kill, he became of greater interest to the Scourge. Which is. Not a good thing.

I based the fic in the song with the premise of "what kind of mother asks for her daughter to kill her?" And the only mother I could think of who had the audacity and a daughter who would comply is Myrinne. I'm so salty about Myrinne. I'd like to know why I associate death with the ocean so deeply in ACO fics/playlists. I do not do this in my own life?

Bad Things to Such Good People- Manchester Orchestra, Julien Baker. So inspiring, but I keep deleting anything I write about this. It's such a good song. It gives me chills. Julien Baker's harmony hurts me.

Requiem, K.626 Lacrimosa dies illa -London Philharmonic Orchestra. I listened to this on repeat while watching a chaotic conversation go down on discord. It really added to the moment. I think it's on my Deimos playlist. 🤷Mozart didn't have to go that hard (but I would too if I thought I were composing my funeral music).

Feeling Fruit- palehound. Did that little sketchy zine-y thing. You know that moment where you leave a depressive episode? Or you leave a bad mental space in general? And you have to relearn how to be a human? Yeah. Also, I like grocery stores. And fruit. 🍋🍊🍏🍐

St. Ides Heaven - Bright Eyes. Companion version( I think its Phoebe Bridgers in the background??). Surprised by this, I didn't think I listened to this much? Idk the drums make me feel something I'd like to chase.

You Missed My Heart- Mark Kozelek. My most played song for 2 years. Why? Because Mark singing about stabbing a guy and then getting killed in prison puts me to sleep. I like the Phoebe Bridgers version too, but Mark has not missed my heart. I also listen to train noises to pass out. I don't know why I'm like this. I wish I knew. 🔪🚂😴

🍅 [TOMATO] How misunderstood is your OC? In-universe or IRL.

Oh ford… i feel like he lives and breathes being misunderstood by most people. But he’s never been one to particularly care about the way others see him unless he has to confront it and if that never comes then he doesn’t care.

He’s a person who kinda lives in a spotlight of a monster. People painted him that way and after a point he embraced this monstrous persona, and became what everyone wanted so much… and that was a monster to fear. But He never wanted to be this, his intention was never to be like this all he ever wanted was to make sure people didn’t suffer the way he did. The utopians are the people he wants to see him as a monster. But people like him found a lot of the time in the heat of his attacks they will be spared… by the person they were told was a monster.

So is he a monster? To some yes and to some no

I’d say he’s pretty misunderstood in someways.

Well i know he’s your favorite because he’s teal, ya know.

Turquoise is the color i associate him with the most, it genuinely is THE color for him. There’s just always been this tie with him to greenish colors but recently i changed it to turquoise and it… was eye opening.

Ford’s taken on a sort of Water vibe, not like super literal way. If anything he’s semi-aquatic but really in a metaphorical way too right. Cause he’s kinda like water, he flows like a stream through most scenarios in life. There’s moments where its rougher and faster but at the end its always water even if it came out tainted in the end.

He goes through a lot throughout the story, and goes through lots of literal changes. However by the end he’s still himself, despite it all he waded through the path life gave him like a stream of water. So yeah, if any of that makes sense thats why Ford’s color is Turquoise. Woter association.

🥑 [AVACADO] What will they never back down about, even if it makes them seem bad?

Ford will absolutely never back down on his opinion about utopians. This belief is what literally defines him to people as a murderer, because he brutally kills these people as if they mean as little to him as mere objects. But to him they aren’t more than that, they gave up their humanity the moment they decided humans do not deserve the right to be treated like living beings.

Ford’s a die hard believer in human rights and in this universe its really really close to being erased out of existence on earth. For good. He will do ANYTHING to protect the remainder of this right. Even if he has to kill the people responsible for its eradication.

🍎 [RED APPLE] Who does your OC value above all else?

Tom values his friends and family above everything else, even above his own life. He only really wants to make people smile more than anything else, he’s always been like this. It was burned into him at a young age, because he wanted to make his mom smile when she wasn’t happy.

🍏 [GREEN APPLE] How do they differ from the norm and how are they punished for it?

Tom’s a born utopian, but never was apart of the general belief system of utopia. Essentially he was not a follower of the cultish mentality that existed within his home city. He acted against the laws set in place and there were several times where he was punished severely for it.

Even once having to deal with a medicated dampening program. Which is essentially when utopia tries to correct behavior with controlled substances to prevent thoughts of “violence”. But these medications do not really do anything except progressively damage the brain more and more until the person dies.

Thankfully he was able to flush the meds. And he got out of utopia soon after… nowadays he’s safer. But the death of his mother was also a punishment for his “crimes” against utopia.

🍇 [GRAPES] What's their circle of people/their species like? What dynamic would they be called?

Tom’s circle of friends… are the bounty hunters. He himself is one, but genuinely they are the most loving little group of people. A real family for sure, but they are chaotic as hell.

Liam

🌶️ [HOT PEPPER] Who would your OC declare their sworn enemy if they could meet them?

Liam would probably call Ford his sworn enemy, but Ford wouldn’t agree cause he knows he and Liam are fine and on good terms. Liam is just a little ridiculous tbh

🥕 [CARROT] How tough is your OC against certain situations? How weak are they against others?

Liam is one of the most thick skinned individuals you will ever meet, there is NOT a lot that gets to him. In fact most things will just make him speak louder than you and insult you further, what can i say… the man has a bit of a short fuse. However, the one thing that gets him… isn’t even fight situations.

Its coming to terms with the fact someone cares about him. Especially when you consider how broken of a man he is, because Liam doesn’t want to be alive. For most of his life he has been actively trying to end it, whether that be from smoking, drugs, alcohol poisoning, he has many habits he know will eventually kill him. He doesn’t want to be alive, to put it very plainly again.

However, when it came to his now wife; Azlin. He found himself at a crossroads where he approached her at a tense moment and asked why she cared about him. At the time she responded cold and non-informative… but she found him later attempting something. And after she got him back to a quiet room with her, she came clean and he would begin a process of cleaning up. That would turn him from trying to die… to trying to live.

🥝 [KIWI FRUIT] How does their outside appearance differ from who they are?

Liam kinda… looks exactly how you imagine he acts tbh. Short angry and loud.
