Hello, Veronica! It’s nice to hear from you! Sorry this has taken me a while to answer. I’m trying to catch up after being gone for a bit. Okay... *cracks knuckles* Let me give this a shot with perspective from both stories. I’ll be answering this a bit backward since my train of thought is all over the place at the moment.

To be honest, Heath’s Joker has his own separate file in my mind compared to other versions of him. His rivalry with Batman in TDK (to me) doesn’t replicate the exact relationship tones the comics spent decades building on but is still very intriguing. What I mean is that the movie doesn’t give me the impression that Joker and Batman have the underlying sexual or romantic(?) tension we’ve seen between them for years. That might’ve changed given more screentime with Heath but we’ll never know. Given that we have limited material with him, I try to work with what I’ve seen and there’s not much to indicate his sexuality. We can only assume or make our own conclusions based on what we’d like.

A fellow writer made a post about this a while ago (I believe Ladyoftheseastuff?) regarding this subject that I really liked and agreed with. For the most part, I can see J being an asexual person until he finds someone that really interests him. I have a hard time seeing him chasing tail or being controlled by those kinds of basic instincts. He’s very proud and thinks of himself as being above ‘lesser’ men or those who act like animals. That’s not to say he wouldn’t let loose with the person he finds interesting. This is just a general idea of how I see him but I’ll get into the two stories you mentioned.

During the timeskip in Tsūyaku, J is completely consumed with shedding his former self and jumping into a life of crime. Jack was always driven and had plenty of motivation to make his plans come to life but they suddenly took a different course, leading him down a very dark, violent path. Personal relationships with others are a waste of time and his energy was better spent elsewhere. He rejects anyone and anything that might get in the way of his ambitions. J understands most people better than they do themselves and wholly distrusts them, practically waiting for them to do something underhanded. He’d rather toss someone’s body in the dumpster than give them the opportunity to pull a fast one by letting his guard down even for a second. During this period, I see him as a mostly asexual villain who just wants to cause trouble.

In Queen of the Rhombus, J is a little different compared to Tsūyaku. During flashbacks, it’s shown he had a toxic relationship with Jeanie for a few years as a younger man. What really happened between them depends on POV since J has a tendency of twisting things in his own mind so everyone else is always at fault but him (more to come in the story). His experience with her and dealing with other women causes him to completely resent them (not much different from people in general), thinking they’re mostly simple creatures that run on basic urges and desires. He’s arrogant enough to believe he has them all figured out, and they’re good as pawns or entertainment, but that’s about it. Before going to Arkham this time following TDK, I see him maybe getting some once in a blue mood if he feels like it but nothing more than that. Definitely no intimacy or relationships after Jeanie.

1) Introduce yourself and tell us how long you’ve been collecting Monster High dolls!

call me blue! i got my first doll (gooliope jellington) in late december 2015, but i began really collecting in earnest starting in 2016, so call it about 3 years

2) How many MH dolls do you have?

very definitely over 200 probably at this point..... most of them are on display, but a few thrifted and boxed dolls are hidden away

3) Is Monster High your favorite doll line? Why or why not?

that.... is really hard to answer. it’s definitely the doll line i enioy collecting the most, and i can pretty much say ‘yes, it IS my favorite!’ but there’s that little voice at the back of my head that’s saying ‘but you owe your love of dolls to barbie...’

4) Who’s your favorite MH ghoul?

ohhhh man i love howleen. i love her so much she’s so wonderful.

5) Favorite Manster?

mm..... hoodude? heath? or.... honestly i do have a huge soft spot in my heart for jackson (even tho he is. a lot. and many of the people i’ve seen who are fans of his are. even more. not everybody tho!!! just. a sad majority....)

6) Do you own any dolls of your favorite ghoul and/or manster? How many?

i own a version of every howleen doll (inlcuding the reboot doll), and it was definitely one of the proudest moments in my collecting, finally having one of each. i have also thrifted at least 3 i think? and i have 2+ repaints of her. i have one heath doll (he was my second/third doll), one jackson that was thrifted, and no hoodude since he was an sdcc exclusive :( but i don’t think hes a great looking doll anyway, like i wasnt expecting hard plastic obviously but i was hoping for more than just a stuffed doll ya feel?

7) Do you own any playsets? If so which one(s)? If not, is there a reason?

i own the school playset (my niece gave it to me when she didnt want it anymore), the catacombs playset (still in box bc i dont have room for it lol), the 13 wishes dj set i guess its called?? and 2 of the fdc playsets. also draculaura’s car and bed, both cleo and frankie’s vanities, and the cam design lab, but idk if any of those count lol

8) Of the original main ghouls (including Ghoulia, Spectra and Abbey) which is your favorite? Got any dolls of them?

ouch, okay, just make me choose then.... uhhhh i cant really rank them? i guess i would put frankie at the top but shes more default for me than anything else honestly. i dont really care for spectra tho so shes at the bottom whoopsie. also if operetta is also included (which it doesnt say she is but.) then i dont really care for her either tbqh anyway, yea i got several dolls of each lol

9) Favorite character with only one doll release?

off the top of my head im thinkin neighthan, but honestly all of the fusions are good and also all single release doll charas are good. OH i really like cupid too tho and also finnegan

10) Character with too many dolls (in your opinion?)

spectra. idk i just!!! really dont like her i mean she has nice dolls but i can not make myself care about her.

11) Any character you would’ve liked to see in a doll line that didn’t make it? (i.e. Lagoona in Sweet Screams or Draculaura in Power Ghouls, etc)

ok. i HATE gil. but i think his design was super good in gsr and i would have loved to see him as a doll.

12) Any ideas you would’ve liked to see in a doll line?

oh worm ive been thinkin on this for YEARS actually, but get this: “Boogie Fever” - a disco inspired doll line. obv has twyla in it. also what if a line where they were in famous movies - frankie and gooliope in ghostbusters, and then other classics like casablanca and breakfast at tiffanys (i actually hate that movie tbqh but it is a classic) etc

13) Is there a “grail” MH doll for you? If so do you own it?

mmmmmm pretty much all of the sdcc dolls, but i would love to have the home ick heath some day, since that’s the closest to a sig doll they have for him. i dont have him, but i do have one sdcc exclusive doll (the ghostbusters frankie)

14) Thoughts on the cancelled Ever After High crossover?

neutral. once upon a time i was excited about it, but honestly i could care less now. part of the problem is that i would want the crossover to go a very specifici way, and part of it is that the eah fans are rabid.

15) Thoughts on the 2016 reboot faces?

i mean. they are cute! super cute! but. they really arent the monster high i fell in love with, you know?

16) Thoughts on the 2016 “Monster Family” line?

weak. bad. the dolls are cute enough but the line is NOTHING. they didnt even make alivia look like her movie counterpart so like, what was the point.

17) How bout the SDCC exclusives? What was your favorite? Do you own any?

mmm i LOVE all of the sdcc exclusives but i think the deadfast ghoulia, valentine and whisp, and hexacaiah and robecca are all super good.

18) How about Amazon exclusives?

ADULT DRACULAURA!!!! god i love her so much she really is so fucking gorgeous and i regret every day that i didnt buy her for like $50 when i got the chance. i do have like 2 of the skelita amazon exclusives tho

19) Favorite Frankie Stein doll?

im gonna assume for all of these favorite doll questions that the sig look is out for the count bc i love the sigs so much lol. aaaanyway, her classroom look is SUPER cute. also sweet screams

i display them! occasionally i take pics, and sometimes i move them around, but they’re usually just displayed

no, but it was the line that got me into collecting in the first place! i collect barbies, eah, dcshg, lalaloopsy, and so many more. basically, if i see a doll i like, i get it (if i have the funds to obviously). honestly i buy/collect anything i like ya know?

37) Do you still collect Monster High dolls? (i.e. scour the internet and/or secondhand stores?)

mmm... kind of? i thrift them when i see them, but i’m more into ooak dolls now tbqh. there are a few still on my list tho that i would love to buy, fuly complete and all that good stuff.

38) There’s a lot of new Monster doll/toy lines out now: thoughts if any?

no real thoughts, because i cant think of any monster doll lines out rn? i mean, im sure there are some, i just cant think of them right now

39) And finally, what’s your favorite thing about Monster High? Can be past or present!

uhhhhh everywhere??? threir character designs, lore, the fact that in original preboot canon normies and monsters actually know about each other, the lore, the messages it put out about embracing your freaky flaws and all that. monster high is/was just. such a completely amazing and wonderful series.

10 – Iron Man

Here we have the one that started it all, IRON MAN. Before this, Comic Book movies from Marvel, aside from Blade, were very laughable. So laughable that I must admit, I didn’t even see this in the theater until the FAMOUS end credits appeared on the internet and got my ass all excited again.

With the most perfect casting in history (Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark) and a really great origin story, this movie has earned its place among the best comic book movies of all time.

9 – X-Men: Days of Future Past

Let’s be honest here. X-Men movies haven’t always been the best. The first three movies were good, only because we had never seen our favorite mutants on television, but as far as the test of time goes, they failed. They really weren’t like anything we had read in the comics and come on…. the cinematic version of the Juggernaut was embarrassing.

And then X-Men: First Class came out and it was really good, despite not following the comics. But it was good. And then this movie came out. Oh MY GOD! It was super good. X-Men in the 70’s! X-Men in the future! Two cuts of this movie that are equally good! Mutants die, tears are shed, and Storm had an awesome death! Plus, how could you not feel for Kitty, who had the weight of saving the world on her shoulders.

And for the ladies, Hugh Jackman bared some cheeks. Lol.

8 – Captain America: Winter Soldier

Holy, Cap! This was an Oscar worthy movie that Hollywood snubbed, because after all… it’s just a comic book movie. FUCK YOU, Hollywood! This was the Russo Brothers masterpiece that pit Captain America as a man on the run from his country in a homage to those 1970’s government conspiracy flicks. And boy did it deliver.

And everyone. Go back and check out that scene with Cap in the elevator with all those SHIELD soldiers. Awesome!

7 – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

My personal favorite comic book movie of all time is Vol. 1 of this trilogy. Now Vol. 2 is right up there behind its predecessor on my personal favorites list.

First, the movie delivers laughs after laugh. From Groot’s opening dance routine to Yondu’s Mary Poppins homage to Mantis and all her quirks, this film never… and I mean never, had a dull moment.

Second, the soundtrack. The first movie brought back the point on how important a soundtrack can be for a film and this movie just added to that point. Every single song fit the scene and during the credits, the music kept you entertained in-between those five ends credit scenes. In the words of David Hasselhoff, “WE ARE GROOT.”

And finally, this was also a touching film about relationships…. like Peter’s between his father and him… or Rocket’s between him and the crew… or Gamora’s between her and Nebula…. and even Yondu’s with Peter or his former Ravenger buddies. This film was more than laughs and good music. This film was a beautiful representation on the importance of the relationship you have with the ones who matter most.

6 – Captain America: Civil War

This wasn’t a masterpiece as much as it was the perfect summer blockbuster movie. And damn, did this movie deliver the blockbusters!

We got our very first “true” MCU Spider-Man which caused many fanboys like myself to nerdgasm. Tom Holland perfectly nailed not only Spider-man, but the awkward teenager that is Peter Parker. And the exchange between Spidey and Cap… classic.

Also, the Black Panther made his MCU debut and what a debut it was. He was regal as well as bad ass and many fans such as myself can’t wait for his movie. Oh. And then there’s Ant-man’s BIG Surprise that you have to see for yourself.

All in all, this movie promised and it delivered.

5 – Logan

Finally FOX! This is what a Wolverine movie should have always been like —- R-Rated and a masterpiece. While not following the comic book story, “Old Man Logan”, this movie does borrow a bit, placing Logan in a future where most mutants, including the X-Men are long dead. Not only is Logan burdened with an aged and weak Prof. X who can no longer control his powers, but he also has to get his “Daughter” Laura to Canada where a mutant paradise is awaiting her, away from the clutches of an evil organization bent on using young mutants as their personal weapons.

This movie is dark, it’s deep, and holds no claws back.

4 – Deadpool

Thank you, Ryan Reynolds and whoever leaked the Deadpool test footage, because out of that, we got the R-Rated Comic Book movie that every diehard Geek like myself has always prayed to the “One-Above-All” for, Deadpool.

From the hilarious opening credits set to Julie Newton’s Angel of the Morning to Deadpool’s little hand to the battle on a SHIELD Helicarrier, this movie had it all. Come on, the movie even had Hydra Agent Bob. Oh. And Angel Dust even made Colossus blush.

3 – Guardians of the Galaxy

I’m not going to lie. This is my favorite movie of all time and I’m so proud to admit that. Before this movie was released, many people were saying this was going to be Marvel’s first big flop, but low and behold, it became one of Marvel’s most successful movies ever.

Things I loved about this move? Let’s see…..

A) Peter Quill’s musical introduction. Come on! Who starts off a movie like this? Well James Gunn did and it was amazing!

B) The exchange between Quill and Korath. Peter (With confidence): There’s another name you may know me by. —- I’m Star-Lord. Korath (Confused): Who? Lol. Cracks me up every time.

C) And there’s this moment:

And D) There’s so many great moments in this movie, I’d run out of the Alphabet before I could list them all so….

2 – The Avengers

This movie. Man, you fans have no idea how much of a pipe dream a movie like this seemed to long time fans like myself. Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, comic book movies were on the same level as crap. I’m serious. Bat-Man and Robin anyone? But then came Iron Man and all of a sudden, the impossible dream seemed very possible.

Now this team wasn’t the same as the original Avengers, which had no Cap, Black Widow, or Hawkeye, but as far as the reality went, it was more than perfect. Every single character was introduced organically and they meshed with each other perfectly. Who could forget the Hulk versus Thor or Black Widow’s Horror Movie inspired experience with the Hulk, or the Hulk smashing that puny God Loki, or….. basically, the Hulk was awesome… as were all of the cast.

Was this Marvel’s best movie? Hells yeah!

1 – The Dark Knight

And finally, the comic book inspired movie that’s more than just a comic book movie. It’s a masterpiece. Thank you, Christopher Nolan and thank you, Heath Ledger…. may you rest in peace.

This movie was hands down, the best Batman movie ever. Cristian Bale was a perfect Batman trying to take down the Joker, played by Ledger in the role he was born to play (He also won an Oscar for this role.) Batman gave all he had to take the Joker down and the Joker begged for more every step of the way, but in the end, everyone loss… including poor Harvey Dent.

5 stars, 10 out of 10. That’s how good this movie was.

Prince of Stride: Alternative 2 – 12 | ACCA 1 | Hand Shakers 1 | Nanbaka 15 | Marginal #4 1

I don’t think I noticed this last time, but the dropped item is a Stride headset.

“…that won’t affect your future…”

That technique, where the memory becomes “movie footage”…I like it. Plus, Kyosuke was basically half of the reason why I stuck around with this show…haha.

“Fubun ritsu” at least translates directly…

Without context, the dialogue sounds pretty funny, especially because Diane should be (half) British and maybe should’ve picked up on the fact D’s sounds like…well…

The “D for Demon” pun is an English only one. The D in the Japanese is for doge (and not Doge, mind you). Doge is short for dogeza, or putting yourself on the ground and bowing furiously (to regain respect, for example).

Even Kadowaki is into the photoshoot!

Ah…without fanservice, this show would never get off the ground. Judging by how well sports anime fare from having pretty boys, that is.

There seems to be a theme of “letting go” in this, which makes it a perfect character study for One Wish They Never Wanted. Unfortunately, I’ve basically finished the story now…

Note tobu is also the word for “to fly”.

It vaguely bugs me that every time the subs go “Takeru”, the Japanese goes “Fujiwara-kun”.

The dude’s name is Asuma (you can hear it in the Japanese clearly), but the subs said “Yuma”.

I never questioned it, but…why is there laundry in the Stride clubroom?

I dunno about shogi, but apparently “a mistake leads to progress”.

Andromeda is a maiden in the mythology. So Reiji’s right. Also, he’s voiced by Mamoru Miyano. You can’t go wrong with the dude.

Who in Dante’s Inferno is the flashing light head man?

Yeah, I wonder where the “Mee-chan” comes from too.

LOL, biology joke. Luckily, I understand it.

Sometimes Takeru sounds too deep for a teenager.

Sometimes the humour can be a bit hard to follow in this show, but the visual quality is second to none!

Riku specifically asks to trade bentos, so the “trade bites” thing is deceiving.

I dunno what the “Japan Deep” is, but I think this is it.

Gelidium jelly. Aka agar…in some cases.

Back to Takeru observing muscles. It doesn’t get overdone, which is a good point of this show.

Basically Nagatsuka is Yamato from Nanbaka…haha.

The English is really good around the “on your mark” bit.

Apparently you can get a motorcycle licence starting at the age of 16. I’m not good with balancing though, so a bike is hardly appropriate for me.

That shot of Hozumi, with the “Kuga” locker in the back…hmph. Nice foreshadowing/suspense shot.

I can’t quite make out what Ayumu’s saying when the subs go “Bering Sea”, as I don’t know the equivalent in Japanese. However, it most likely isn’t “Bering Sea”.

I don’t know what the equivalent to the “KGB” thing is either…Update: Okay, I know it now. It’s “ka ge be”, at least in its audio version.

What are the helicopters for?

There was a kaitenzushi that Kuga-senpai passed…(hey wait, what am I saying? Kuga’s not my senpai!)

The English on the subway sign behind Yuri is really good. Why are these fine details in this show so good?!

It’s moments when a character smiles and you smile along with them, that’s why I watch anime.

I think “Yuniko” was a parody of UNIQLO, a Japanese brand. Apparently they’re pretty cheap, and I’ve been able to find it in my home city for a good few years now.

Really? Gainaxing? On Diane? I must’ve wiped that from my memory.

Hozumi, don’t leave Kuga-senpai hanging!

I dunno what a Kankokukan is…

I think they mean the Sea of Okhotsk…since that’s close to Japan. At least there was a warning that this would indeed be stupid talk and nothing more. However, the “Stop getting creative with my memories!” means that that gibberish was actually a bunch of locations in Japan, characterised by that weird stuff in the animation. I bet only people who are really acquainted with Japan and its geography would get it…because I don’t.

I dunno what a “Jangara” is. Or what “Jangara ramen” is.

It’s really hard to tell who’s bros with who here. Probably because they have completely different hair colours.

If you watch the Riku and Asuma scene carefully, you can see Ayumu, Hozumi and their Saisei counterparts sliding on the balls in the room behind them.

In the back of the “salt to the enemy” scene, it says shio (in romaji), salt (obviously) and shio (in katakana). On Riku’s bag, it says shio (in kanji).

Is Riku’s hair black when his face is hidden by the magazine (last part of ep with credits)?

I only just found out, but that fanboy from Saisei, Kaede? He’s voiced by Toshiyuki Toyonaga, meaning he’s Yuri Katsuki (Yuri!!! on Ice). Kyosuke is voiced by Junichi Suwabe, making him Viktor Nikiforov. Yeah...that happened 3 seasons before Yuri on Ice...

Stick figures…that’s not a very conventional way to save on anime budget, but it’s a way nonetheless.

Did I just see Kyosuke with no eyes…? No, the aliens got his eyes too! That was so close to a perfect run (pun intended) without those face stealing aliens!

The question about snow is just an equivalent to “something impossible happened”.

“The devil getting sunstroke” was probably due to it being really hot.

Panda bread…the reason why it even exists is because pan da means “It is bread” and panda…is panda.

I know that feel, Riku… I’m only average, I used to not be so average…and that’s the sad part about me.

The rainbow of change…I hope it comes for me too.

Update: The name “Amatsu Ida” was on my mind and I couldn’t figure out why until I realised it’s the same pun as Tenya Iida’s. The POSA staff must’ve thought they were really funny, eh? Also, I thought they all had numbers in their names (Tasuku Senoo, Bantaro Chiyomatsu etc.) but I was wrong about most of them. However, there’s continuity between Shizuma and his bro (they both have the “horse” kanji, Asuma is “playing horse” – playing as in “frolicking” and such – while Shizuma is “quiet horse”) and Tasuku is “task” in katakana.

There was some very limited animation during that conversation (where Jean learns ACCA won’t be dissolved).

What’s up with white uniformed Yurio’s hat? (Assuming Nino is the black haired dude.) Update: Turns out Nino has blue hair, while Knot is the dude with black hair. White uniformed Yurio’s name is Rein.

Pan = bread, apparently in Portuguese as well as Japanese. Also, Rein likes donuts and since he’s the “police” in this area…that sort of seems like a cliché…?

Mauve is the only one I really recognise (aside from Jean), after downloading all the ACCA icons I wanted before I saw this show. Mauve has some really distinctive hair. I recognise Rein from the icons, but not his name…hence the last dot point.

Trembling grey-haired dude’s hand was…actually pretty funny.

I love how Mauve is characterised by indigo hair that moves in the wind. It makes for some very limited yet LOLworthy animation.

Apparently, the café in the east staition (?) has American coffee (albeit lowercase) and blended coffee. Someone managed to stick that in…I’m impressed.

The ED looks arthouse, and I mean that in a good way. So…basically, although this seems to be a weaker showing than SGRS, it looks pretty good and I’m keeping it on for another ep.

(Hand Shakers 1)

Thought it had potential…but then the previews came out, and yet again, I have stumbled across the…problematic anime…of the season.

If there’s one thing I have to question, it’s the giant turtle on one building’s wall. Who thought a giant turtle on a wall was a good idea?

Yeah…if there’s any way to describe me after I see Gainaxing + torture, it’s “losing all attention”. Plus, they didn’t really explain anything yet about this boy who’s (according to the CR synopsis) called Tazuna or his girl Koyori. The CGI is hardly impressive either.

Gainax counter no. 2. Yet again, the scene is hardly impressive by any count. I think they’re trying to go all out with their visual techniques, and they’re achieving nothing.

When the camera specifically rotates around Pres’s mammaries…you know that’s a problem. Problem no. 2 is that I focussed more on a (purple) ad that says “Do Tarot Divinations!” instead of Tazuna. One last chance before I nope out of here, and that’s only because AniList was down earlier today just as I was using it.

Gainaxing no. 3. That’s it – I’m out of here.

*groans* After Hand Shakers, I need therapy…ugh. I decided to rewatch a lot of my “worst shows ever” after Hand Shakers, too, which should very well explain my sore throat, feeling of a headache and any other symptoms I may exhibit during this simulcast commentary.

Rin! Rin! Hi! Hi! sounds more nasal. That’s what’s wrong with it.

Shut up…in English? I guess so.

Liquid nitrogen, in English? Hmm. Futamata-sensei’s good...or maybe just whoever was responsible for that.

Idol anime are hard to access, so I’ve finally got one to cover…maybe.

Minimal CGI…that’s good. No gripes there, then.

Huh. It’s rare to find kanji that are assigned completely different romaji to their usual ones. Tsukuru has its own kanji, but those kanji are for bukatsu or club activities.

I knew it was coming…but L and R? In English, it just sounds uninspired.

Kirihara’s yet another Toshiki Masuda role…haha. Of course.

Marimo? The lil’ fluff moss?

I was confused at first about this “Starclusters” thing, but it turns out it just means the fans. Like Beppu Apes.

Yet another weird name I was prepared for, but got overwhelmed by when it showed up in the show proper. Shy…what a weird name…

I dunno why, but I react more to Lagrange Point’s hair being implausible rather than Marginal’s.

Hah, biology joke. That Atom is such a Masuda character, it’s cute.

Okay – complicated pun time. That kanji (it means “well”, as in the one with the water in it) is one letter I, but the word for “good” in hiragana is two Is but they sound roughly the same.

Of course, the iPun comes from iPhones, but the Taisho era is definitively Japanese.

The I-400 exists…but no one handles things like that at an elite school, right?

Tetranacci exists too, but…you know.

You can tell from their behavious that despite their hair colour, they really are bros, that L and R Nomura.

These guys are genre savvy. The specific word I used to describe them were “hideously genre-savvy”, but they hit the sweet spot between “too cliched” and “too much savvy, they ruin the entire genre”.

Okay, I’m keeping it on for another episode or so. It’s not completely out of the box, but it’s likeable.
