Everything Maddy had known about you had been from someone else. Someone telling her all the little things others had told them about you. But Maddy had never witnessed or understood why everyone was so interested in you. Because truthfully, she just thought you to be a slut. And she meant that in the meanest way possible. You were invisible.

The only reason why people knew your name was because of who you hung out with. It was an odd contrast, you were shy, quiet, and had your head stuck in a book. While the people you hung out with were, well...the complete opposite.

Everyone except for Lexi, who was basically the reason why you were in the friend group. But honestly, the only reason why Lexi is apart of the friend group is because of Cassie. Maybe that’s why the two of you were best friends. 

And it’s the exact reason why she was just as shocked as you were when you told her about your crush on the one and only Maddy Perez. You don’t remember how or when your crush started. All you know is that one day you were staring at her lips for a little too long. It’s not like she noticed though, no one ever notices you. 

“I can’t believe you have a crush on Maddy. She’s like the complete opposite of you. She’s loud, confident, and if she knows what she wants, she’ll get it. You’re...” Lexi drifted off trying to find the right words, “...Not that?” 

“Gee thanks, Lex.” You threw your head into her pillow and let out a muffled scream.

She punched your shoulder lightly, “Oh come on, you know I don’t mean it in a bad way! The way you are is exactly why we’re best friends and is one of the many reasons why I love you!”

“Yeah, yeah, I know.” You muttered, screaming once more.

“Just because you’re different from her doesn’t mean she doesn’t feel the same way. So I will take the great honor of being your wing woman, starting with this party that my sister is making us go to tonight!” The brunette offered and you shot your head up. 

You saw the mischievous glint in her eyes as they twinkled, “No! Lex, don’t! She doesn’t like me that way. I don’t even know if she considers me one of her friends, I mean the only person I really interact with in the group is you! It’s just going to be embarrassing!” 

“What? What did you say? I couldn’t understand what you were saying.” She said, sarcastically.

“I’m being serious-” 

“I’m sorry! I still can’t comprehend what you’re trying to say!” 

Before you could protest once more, Cassie barged into their shared room, “Maddy and Kat are here! Let’s go!”

Both you and Lexi let out a collective sigh before following the older Howard. Your heart fluttered at the mere sight of Maddy. The only view of her outfit was because of her head poking through the back seat window: a tight black dress, that showed a lot of skin. 

The palm of your hands started to become sticky as you mentally cursed, tearing your eyes away from the girl, while wiping your hands on your jeans. You could hear Lexi chuckle and you didn’t even have to look at her to figure out that she was laughing at you. 

When you finally got a hold of yourself, you noticed that Kat’s small car was now full. Jules occupied the passenger seat, leaving the Howard sisters to fill in the only other empty spots next to Maddy, “Oh it looks like there’s no room. You know, it’s New Year’s Eve, cops are going to be everywhere I don’t want to get you in trouble by squeezing in. I can just walk home and stay there for the night.” You rambled to them.

All of the girls, but Lexi, just looked at you in shock. This was probably the most amount of words you said to them at once. 

You were about to leave without a response when Lexi stopped you, “No! It’s New Year’s Eve, Y/N. You shouldn’t celebrate it alone. Maddy!” You shot daggers into Lexi’s heart as your palms sweated even more, “Can Y/N sit in your lap for the ride? It’s not too far away, ten minutes max.” 

Mentally, you had just punched Lexi in the face and cussed her out, but physically you just gave a tight lipped smile while your heart ran at the speed of light. You looked to Maddy who just smiled sweetly, “Yeah of course!” 

Your heart dropped onto the floor and you had to blink a few times to stop your heart from going into cardiac arrest, “Thanks.” You muttered as she opened the door for you. Maddy patted her lap and you slowly, but surely made your way over to her. And it wasn’t too bad when you sat on her lap, your heart rate was still high, but you were composed now. 

You felt a strong, yet petite arms wrap around you waist tightly. Well, fuck, there goes your “composure”. You side eyed Lexi who looked like she was having the time of her life, as she tried not to laugh in front of everyone. To make matters worse for you, hooked her head onto your shoulder as Kat drove. 

You tried to focus on the conversation at hand, not participating obviously, because when do you ever? But at least you were a very active listener...not this time though because her warm breath was on your neck. 

She was so close, yet so far. 

Luckily, Kat drove there faster than expected and you were able to free yourself before you said or did something stupid. The group dispersed once you walked in, everyone had their own agendas for the night. 

You followed Lexi, like always, “I am going to sucker punch you so hard right now!” You told her over the booming music.

“Oh come on! One day you’re going to thank me for it.” She shot you a wink, before sitting on the couch.

“Mhmm, I highly doubt that.” 

As the night progressed, you and Lexi stood your ground on the couch. Not allowing anyone to sit there, except for Fez. Lexi was in a deep conversation with Fez when you excused yourself to grab a drink. 

You grabbed yourself a soda can from the cooler, when you turned around you were met with a drunk guy with a lopsided smile on his face, “Hey.” He slurred out.

“Hi.” You muttered, not wanting to be rude. 

You tried to walk past him, but every move you made he’d block you, “I was wondering if you wanna get out of here. I know a couple of bedrooms that are empty right now, you and I could go and hang out for a bit.” 

Your mouth opened and closed multiple times, trying to find the nicest way to reject him. So captivated with your thoughts running at a million miles an hour, you didn’t even notice Maddy sitting on the couch, not too far away from you. 

The boy took your silence as a yes for some weird reason, so he grabbed your hand and started dragging you through the house, right past Maddy. You felt another hand grab yours as it forced you down onto someone’s lap. 

Even though you only felt her arms around your waist for a few minutes earlier, you remembered her touch anywhere, “Hey dumbass! She doesn’t want to go anywhere with you.” 

“And how do you know that?” The boy asked with a chuckle.

“Because that’s my girl! So don’t ever hit on her again or I will make East Highland a living hell for you! Bye!” She shooed him off and he cursed under his breath before stumbling off.

“Thank you for that.” You mumbled, avoiding her eyes. 

“Why do you do that?” Maddy asked and you just hummed in response, “Why do you run away every time I get close?” 

You shook your head, “I don’t-I don’t do-”

“Yeah you do. I’ll try to approach you at school and you always run the other direction. Or when we’re all hanging out you avoid everyone, but Lexi, but I’ve noticed you really avoid getting into any close proximity with me. I don’t bite, you know.” She told you and you chuckled.

“No, I know. I just-” You stuttered, trying to fight words to say, “You make me nervous.” 

“Why?” She asked with a smirk on her face.

You licked your lips, your eyes finding the floor the most interesting thing in the room. Maddy tilted your chin to look in her eyes and someway, somehow, you found courage in them, “Because I have a crush on you. Like a super big, dorky crush on you.” You muttered quickly, and if Maddy wasn’t listening to your every word with the utmost intent she would’ve missed it.

But she caught it, “I know you don’t like me like that. I mean there’s Nate and you know I don’t think you ever really noticed me. I’m kinda always in the background, so I doubt you really-”

Your words were cut off by soft lips. Your eyes widened as you saw Maddy’s eyes closed in front of you, her lips attached to yours. She started pulling away, but before she could get too far, you grabbed her cheeks with the most confidence you’ve ever had and kissed her. 

The brunette smiled into the kiss and you both pulled away smiling like idiots, “Y/N, I’ve always seen you.” 

Across the living room, Lexi sat with Fez right next to her. The two of them shared a fist bump, as Fez reached for his pocket and handed the once “drunk” boy from before a few bucks. 

Mission accomplished.

the school nerd. nobody wanted to be her friend, the only friend she had was lexi howard. the other school nerd.

no one picked on her because she was pretty and was more outgoing, she never let people get to her either.

it was way different for y/n, of course none of them called her ugly because she wasn't and if they did call her that they were lying.

some of the girls were jealous of her body type and her beautiful features. she was picked on a lot and she ignored them but she couldn't say it didn't hurt because that would be lying.

she was ready to dig up a hole and stay there forever. it was one thing stopping her from doing that though.

maddy perez, the queen bee. she literally ruled the place. almost everyone was scared of her, even some teachers.

what nobody knew was that maddy and y/n were dating for almost eight months now. maddy didn't want to tell anyone because it would ruin her reputation.

so to cover it up maddy would follow everyone else and pick and mess with y/n. maddy hated doing it but it was for the best.

right?

today as y/n walked down the hall she was pushed to the floor and her books went everywhere. the whole hall boomed with laughs and 'ou's'.

maddy watched the whole thing happen, her blood was boiling at this point. she hated that she couldn't do anything about it.

lexi rushed over to y/n and helped her pick her things up and helped her off the floor. lexi gave maddy a look basically telling her 'this is what you should be doing' maddy pursed her lips at the girl before walking up to the scene.

y/n looked up at maddy, tears threatening to spill out of her eyes. maddy mumbled sorry before starting the show.

"well well well, look at what we have here" maddy smirked as touched y/n's face. y/n shivered, maddy always intimidated her and maddy used that against her sometimes.

crowd of students laughed as maddy backed her up into the lockers. she leaned down to y/n's ear, "nice tights you decided to put on today, did you wear them for me" maddy rasped in her ear.

"i-"

"shh shh i know you did" maddy said as she moved from y/n's ear and smacked her books back on the floor and walked away causing the crowd to go wild.

the bell rung and the hallway cleared mighty fast. multiple people walked her way and kicked her books to the other side of the hall.

some of the notebook paper ripped out, y/n felt tears roll down her face. she hated her life, she hated that everyone hated her.

maddy walked in her class with her head down, she hated hurting her baby. she felt a tear roll down her eye and she quickly wiped it.

it was the end of the day, people got loaded onto the bus, some walked, some drove. y/n walked every day, she liked getting fresh air before she walked into hell.

she spotted maddy by a tree as she typed away on her phone, seconds later y/n's phone chimed. meet me by the bleachers please.

y/n scoffed as she walked her way to the back of the school. she walked as slowly as possible on purpose by time she reached the bleachers ariana held an annoyed expression.

"there you are"

"what do you want" y/n stated. "i- i'm sorry baby" maddy said as she grabbed y/n's hand. "i hate doing this" maddy softened.

"then why do you do it?" y/n asked looking at the floor. "i told you why, because of my re-" y/n cut maddy off with a scoff.

"you're fucking reputation i know" y/n said kicking the grass that needed to be cut. "i sometimes wonder do you actually love me" y/n said as she continued to look at the ground.

maddy grabbed y/n's chin and lifted it up to look at her. she kissed the girl's lips "of course i love you baby, what are you talking about" ariana softens.

"you sure love that fucked up reputation more than me don't you? cause if you didn't you would've been defending me every time those jerks came at me" y/n argued.

"i should've picked lexi instead" y/n mumbled, of course she was lying, she loved maddy she was the best girlfriend out of school.

"excuse me?" maddy said tightening her jaw. "you heard what i said, you either choose me or your bitch ass reputation. goodbye madeleine" y/n said turning on her heel and walking back to the front of the school.

the next day was same old same old. y/n didn't see maddy all day, y/n told lexi the conversation she and maddy had yesterday. they couldn't help but laugh at the part of y/n mentioning lexi’s name.

"let's see if she picks the right choice" lexi said as she pointed her head in maddy’s direction as she came down the hall.

it was this one punk boy who would always mess with you only when maddy is around to get her attention literally everyone noticed that.

too bad she was gay.

"looking even uglier today, keep up the nice work" he said, it was the corniest thing ever but everyone laughed just because it was at me.

"wanna say that again for me?" maddy’s voice boomed through the hallway. she stood tall behind the boy with anger written over her face.

one thing maddy hated is when they called her ugly because that was one thing she wasn't. "did you call her ugly?" maddy asked tilting her head at the boy as she turned around to face her.

"um-"

"tell her you're sorry" she said crossing her arms. they boy scoffed but quickly turned around at y/n and apologized by the face maddy made.

"say it like you mean it" she grits.

"i'm sorry y/n" he apologized again, "are you gonna bother her again?" maddy asked. "no i won't" he shook his head. "and what happens if you mess with her again?" maddy asks.

"i-"

"you'll regret being born if you fuck with her again, now get lost" she watched him as he quickly walked down the hall.

the students laughed at the boy as she hurried down the hall. maddy turned to them, "and for you guys, you better not fuck with her either." maddy warned making some of the students gulp.

"and for you" maddy smiled turning her way back to y/n, maddy pulled y/n's bottom lip from in between her teeth and kissed her lips passionately.

the crowd gasped.

maddy broke away and mumbled against her girlfriend's lip. "i'm sorry baby, i should've done this sooner" y/n smiled, "it's okay baby" y/n smiled up at maddy.

"yes finally" lexi cheered clapping her hands.

"come on baby, let's go to class" maddy said as she held her hand out which y/n gladly took. as they walked down the hall all eyes were on them.

"i love you so much" y/n said. "and i love you so much more princess" maddy said kissing her lips once again.

y/n didn't have to worry about anybody messing with her ever again.

particles of dust drifted up in the sky as the light from the large window letting the sun shine its rays down into the attic. the room was crowded with boxes piled in coats of dust, ancient lamps and trunks were scattered around the room, frozen remnants of time standing still to be viewed in the eye of the beholder. 

the attic is truly said to be memory lane and every year, you would wander up the stairs to clean away the dust that piled up on the countless of boxes and to clean away unwanted memories. why you still had all of your essays from the sixth grade? didn’t matter. now, they were inside a garbage bag beside you as you went back to doing your annual spring cleaning.

box after box, papers after papers. although the attic is a trip down memory lane, it stole time itself as you wasted countless hours cleaning the place. only to be immersed in papers after papers, photo albums, medals. your eyes scanned around for another box to look through, another box to clean out. there was one that caught your eye, dented to the side, you didn’t hesitate to make your way over towards it to clean it out.

your hands lifted the flaps of the the box. rummaging through it, looking for things to through out. another box for you to rummage, another set of pictures for you to clean. a picture frame was covered in dust, the rag in your hand passed through the glass until in front of you was a photograph of you smiling. your torso encircled by a smiling guy with choppy locks of black hair that almost fell down to his chin looking like he was the happiest guy in the world as you were placing a kiss on his cheek.

tim drake. 

casting your rag down to the side and the photo too, your hands rummaged through the box that you had chosen to clean for the day. tiny little polaroid pictures of the two of you were in your hands, moments when your foreheads were touching, him cupping your breasts with his hands, kisses. the more you rummaged the more it was like you were thrown back five years in time, tickets, bracelets, stolen kisses captured on film, letters, notes over and over again. 

what had possessed you to hold on to these trinkets? your eyes wandered with curiosity as his face was everywhere, the simple smile that touched both of your lips, the cheesy notes where you two would play tic-tac-to, it was all coming back. so why didn’t you smile?

nails dug into your skin as you tried to hold back the waterfall of tears that were praying to fall down your face. he always deserved someone better. how many times had you prayed for him not to leave you? how many times had he the word “okay” softly as he pressed a kiss to your hair while you sobbed in his chest? how many times had you made promises that you knew you would never keep? he deserved better, he always deserved better. 

“you’re making me think that what they told me about you is right,” his voice rang inside of your head as the memories decided to seep slowly into your thoughts.

tim had never once left your side. not after all of your screw ups. not after you fucked him over so many times, not after it felt like the more you two were together, the more you were shattering his heart into a million of pieces. he was your lover, but you could never be enough.

“don’t do this to me. don’t give me space, that’s the last thing i want from you right now,” you threatened as you could feel hot tears streaming down your face as you grasped him by the wrist, trying to pull him away from getting closer towards the door.

“so what? we can talk and soothe things over and pretend it’s never happened until you and i both know that you’re going to back and do it again,” tim hissed as his eyes narrowed as he gazed down at you, his own cheeks were stained with tears as he hated meeting your gaze in moments like this.

“that's not fair. you know i’m trying,” you replied as you shook your head. the lie felt like poison as it ran down your throat. you both knew that you had said that a hundred times, a hundred times he had given you a chance to change. but you didn’t. please don’t leave me, please don’t leave. but not even the mental affirmations could solidify the wish you wanted, but you had to try.

“do you even mean the things you say? ‘i’ll try, i’ll promise i’ll do better, you’re the only person i care about, i promise, tim, i’ll change. i’ll grow, i don’t deserve you but i love you. you and i both know that’s fucking bullshit,” tim snapped as pulled himself away from your grasp.

“but i do love you!” you cried. the tears that trickled down his face, the lower lip that quivered as he shook his head said more as your words were nothing but empty promises that were being repeated over and over again.

“no, i don’t think you do,” the words were like a slap in the face as they escaped tim’s lips. 

“because if you loved me, you wouldn’t need a hundred and one chances to prove that to me. if you loved me, you wouldn’t be making all of these promises knowing that you’ll never keep them. if i’m your lover then why do treat me like shit?” sometimes tim’s voice sounded like honey, now it was mixed with the shearing winds as his words made your heart crack.

“you don’t love me, you’ve never loved me. i’m not your lover, y/n,”

your hands traced the picture frame that you had left on the ground, a tear streaming down your face as your finger traced over his once smiling face. every single word had been right and not even your lovesick heart could have ever fixed the damage that you created.

but one thing that you said was true. you loved him, he was your lover.

Maddy got all info she could on you.

It might be a bit crazy that after such a short kiss, she was already trying to know so much about you. But she finally understood what all the hype was about. She’d finally been given a fragment of what could be felt with you.

A lot of the information gathered was surrounded by a lot of smoke and mirrors. She wanted to trust people’s words about you, but all she knew was that you liked to keep things on the low. If that be hookups, your habits, or what you were doing in a day. No one knew what truly went on. The only thing confirmed was your hookups from the multiple girls that came to school gossiping about it. With the select few sobbing over how you didn’t even care to let them down gently. And judging by Cassie's quiet and tense aura, that was also true.

But you were also right about Maddy being able to get your number so easily. Only having to ask Lexi, who warned her of what may happen if she followed through on meeting up with you or doing anything with you honestly.

And Maddy knew she was right and should take some time to consider what she would do. But then she was reminded of your lips. How soft they were and fitted so perfectly with hers, Your warm hands that had gripped her waist so firmly. The sound of your voice, so soft and so elicit with what you had spoken to her.

She needed it all, even if was for one night.

So, Maddy searched the busy crowd of teenagers. Moving through the smoke-filled room with the soft and sensual music that had triggered couples or horny kids to dance and grind against one another. Making Maddy the unfortunate girl, who had to move through the crowd and be subjected to people's indiscretions. Walking through that minefield of horny teens wasn’t great. Maneuvering around kids grinding with their partners or hookups for the night when she was just trying to look for you.

When she finally reached the clearing of the living room, she found you standing beyond the threshold of the sliding doors leading to the backyard. You were sharing a joint with who she guessed was one of your friends. A carefree smile on your lips with your breaths bellowing into the cool night of the incoming winter.

Pulling her phone from her pocket, she put in the nine-digit contact she had memorized before placing it to her ear. And she watched that after a few seconds, you pulled out your phone and frowned. Placing it to your ear and saying, “Hello?”

“You were right. Getting your number was easy,” Maddy stated, watching your lips widen in a large grin. “I can come out if you want.”

“Nah, that won’t be needed.” Turning around, you found Maddy standing at the door with a smile. “Find us a room. If you can’t, I’ll fuck you in the hallway.”
