diving back into reading comics so here are some tips from a former comic store employee:
There is so much more than superhero comics out there. Seriously. The comic book format has been host to groundbreaking autobiographies, subversive fantasy and sci fi, experimental horror, mysteries, romance, barbarian babe booby comics, you name it
If u do really want to get into Marvel or DC superhero comics I'd recommend that you pick a character with a smaller catalogue to get started, and/or find some writers you like and look through their catalogue. A lot of comic writers for the big 2 have great original stuff that gets overlooked. There's also a good chance an author you like has written a comic series!
If you want to read a certain character and don't know where to start just look up (character) reading guide !! a lot of comics Tumblr make them and you'd be surprised just how obscure our blorbos can get.
If you can think of a property, there's a 90% chance a comic of it exists. I have stocked Three Stooges comics before. The industry knows no bounds
If ur USAmerican your library probably has access to the service Hoopla which has tons of comics on it. Seriously you can read them for free in a legitimate way on your phone or computer and all you need is a library card. The app is even set up so you can read panel-by-panel instead of having to zoom way in on text boxes and speech bubbles
KEEP TRACK OF WHAT YOURE READING. I seriously cannot tell you how many times I've started a comic and really enjoyed it only to leave it unfinished because I found another series and got so excited I forgot about the other one. I personally use a spreadsheet I found by looking up a book tracker on Google sheets and modifying it to suit comic books.
If you want to buy comics, I'd recommend you get them in TPB (Trade Paperback) volumes AKA ~Graphic Novels~ instead of individual issues. Typically these will collect a series and each book will be 5-6 issues of a comic apiece, and you can even find some that collect important appearances of certain characters or events that arent necessarily held together by one series. Saves money, time, and space
Good places to get secondhand comics in any format include thriftbooks(dot)com, secondhand book stores with comic bins and graphic novel sections like Half Price Books or Vintage Stock, and mycomicshop(dot)com. Looking through comic bins can be kinda daunting, especially if they're not well organized so I mostly recommend going to the graphic novel shelves instead. If you do want to go digging it's definitely fun though and I'd recommend bringing a buddy so you can show each other weird obscure comics you find and giggle
9/10 times comic books are NOT the investment you think they are. The industry takes advantage of this misconception a lot to try and boost sales that have been falling for decades at this point. I personally wouldn't recommend buying individual issues of series unless they're like a short miniseries or oneshots. I could get into what actually makes a comic book go up in value but this post is already long as hell so I'll just leave it here
Now go forth and read!!!

Batgirls is Good, Actually
I haven't just posted thoughts about a comic I've been reading in literal years. And I wanted to post a bit about the recent Batgirls series.
I first heard of it when I heard that Cassandra Caine was Batgirl again along with Stephine Brown. But I also heard that the book was "cringe" and "poorly written."
Now, of course, I have learned over the years that when something is called "cringe," especially if the leads are on the younger side of things, especially if those leads are female, it's often people being performatively mad at something they didn't even read half the time. That and, frankly, I have just had enough of social media discourse around "X piece of media is TERRIBLE" because half the time it's overblown and people just join in on a bandwagon or have the worst takes. Just exhausting. Anyway, I just saw "Cass Caine is in a book with really cool art. I have to see this.
Tumblr media
I did not regret it.
Now, I will say, unlike a lot of recent comics I've seen a lot of people online get mad at, I can't really say it's for overtly bigoted reasons. Which is surprising (and kinda sad really) to say about a book where the three main leads are female and one is non-white.
I don't even think the criticisms are invalid, really. But I think to call the book "terrible" is too strong. I thought it was a fun time and thought I'd bring up some of the issues people bring up and my thoughts.
The Narration
Tumblr media
Now this is something I generally agree with folks on. The narration was too much at times. In the above page, you can see the narration captions describing what's plainly obvious like this is a comic from decades earlier.
Now, this is a more comedic book, and while comedy is subjective, there are also rules of thumb for understanding it. And I feel these captions either try way too hard at times to shove in jokes, or ruin the joke they are trying to make by not just stopping and adding another line that ruins what could have been a nice sly line.
Tumblr media
That said, this one panel was great and actually what made me want to track down a trade of this.
2. The Characterization
I've seen people talk about the characterization of the characters being wrong here. And, listen, I get it. Babs is kind of dumber than usual in this book.
But I see people talk about Cass being out of character and....
Tumblr media
...well, I feel conflicted..
Cards on the table, I follow Marvel more closely than DC (or used to anyway, before the pandemic caused me to fall off comics for a few years). And I'm more familiar with Cass's character pre-New 52/Rebirth. So I don't know how her characterization differs in that sense.
But generally? For a book with a more comedic slant, so everyone's characterization is more broad? I think it works. It feels right (especially with my head canon of reading Cass as Autistic) that Cass is kind of blunt and socially awkward.
Tumblr media
*Nodding intensifies*
But yeah, I think Batgirls is enjoyable for what it is and frankly a little over-hated online.
That said, one thing I did roll my eyes at, dirty pinko that I am, was the villain of the first arc, Tutor. It's basically the whole MCU Flag-Smashers "what if all the people rebelling against the status quo are actually evil terrorists?" kind of plot. This isn't a great look when you already are setting up a team of villains who are part of the police state. But it's not enough to kill the book for me either.

Hi everybody!
It's a new month, so it's time to celebrate how awesome squirrels are and also to do a site update and to thank our wonderful Patreon subscribers (and adjacent squirrels)!
For a site update, the big news is me and our website designer (Socketwench) are going to revamp the main website (eschergirls.com) and change the overall look, probably so the web version has a grid of post previews rather than just listing the posts in a row because the current setup leaves a lot of empty space since it only previews one line of text.  Mobile users shouldn't see much change except we'll be removing or changing the scrolling menu bar so it doesn't block most of the post on small screens.  We'll also be adding a popular tag cloud so people can more easily browse the blog if they want to casually.
If anybody has any other suggestions to improve the main site's usability and readability, please let me know!!!  I'm very interested in feedback.  I'm also working on the glossary and index, so people should be able to search the tags by category of character, series, genre, etc... and the glossary should explain what some of the terms like "boobsocks" (clothing that encases each breast separately like socks), "boob flounder" (both breasts on one side of the body), etc... mean.
Also, as usual, I've been working through the archives and fixing up all the old posts to match the current way I'm formatting my posts and to fix posts that were broken during the Tumblr export.  I also add alt-text to every post I restore so people who use screenreaders can access them.  This month, I fixed this post involving Marvel's Magik on an old trading card, the two posts with Boundless Comics' Ember (1, 2), and these old PLAY Magazine "Girls of Gaming" pages (1, 2, 3). I also fixed up this submission about how video game magazines used to advertise contests where you could go on a date with Lara Croft and stuff, and I edited the post to include an update with a link to an interview with one of the models who portrayed Lara for those ads, for those interested!
I'm still working my way through the Tumblr inbox backlog, so if you submitted a post a long time ago, you might see it pop up soon.  Unfortunately, the way Tumblr does its inbox means the older it is the longer it'll take me to reach it. :\  I apologize sincerely for how long it takes me to get through the inbox sometimes.
I'm also still appealing the many incorrectly flagged posts on Tumblr, and the arbitrary algorithmic flagging, sudden rule changes, and other issues, are why I'm trying to fix up the main site to try to get it as usable for everybody as possible so Tumblr isn't the only way to view the blog, or the only place where it's archived.
I know it's repetitive, but it's also why I really appreciate everybody who supports us on Patreon and Ko-Fi.  It gives me much needed help to pay for server costs, upgrades, domain hosting, and just keep the site going in general. :)  I really appreciate that people think what we do is worth supporting <3
So I want to thank everybody who supported Escher Girls on Patreon in March!
Thank you so so much to:

And a special thanks again to PJ Evans for donating on Ko-Fi last month! :)
Also a huge thank you to everybody for reading, submitting, and generally commenting and engaging with Escher Girls!  It makes running the site so worth it. :)
For those who want to follow us without using Tumblr, we have an RSS feed. (For newbies, RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is basically a feed you can read using an RSS reader. Simply copy and paste https://eschergirls.com/rss.xml into an RSS reader and it will keep you up to date on Escher Girls!)
Thanks so much to everybody, and see you next month!

When Avengers and X-Men turned Thirty
If you tell an Avengers fan today that the 90s belonged to the X-Men, it’ll be hard for them to even imagine such a reality ever existed. The mutant super-team which was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963, carried on by Roy Thomas and Neal Adams until its end, revived by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum in 1975, catapulted by Chris Claremont along with John Byrne who gets succeeded by Jim Lee which led to the publishing of the record-breaking comic book: X-Men Vol. 2 no. 1 in 1991
Tumblr media
The Avengers on the other hand started out strong in 1963 with Stan Lee and Jack Kirby at the helm. They would continue their strong run till the 80s thanks to Roy Thomas, John Buscema, Steve Englehart, George Pérez, and Roger Stern, but something happens in the 90s that makes them the 2nd most popular franchise within the House of Ideas when Bob Harras and Steve Epting took over
Tumblr media
If one looks at the Marvel Checklist from the 80s and 90s, we find X-Men from having five ongoing series (The Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, New Mutants, Wolverine, and Excalibur) to having seven (The Uncanny X-Men, X-Men, X-Factor, X-Force, Wolverine, Cable, and Excalibur) leaving behind Avengers with six ongoing titles (Avengers, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, West Coast Avengers, She-Hulk and Captain Marvel). A stark difference between the two franchises was that X-Men titles were spin-offs of The Uncanny X-Men ongoing series whereas the Avengers came into existence thanks to characters established prior to the team formation (Iron Man, Ant-Man, and the Wasp, Thor, Hulk, and Captain America) thereby having fewer ongoing spin-offs than X-Men
It was the year 1993
Under the leadership of Tom DeFalco and Bob Harras, a year-long celebration of both teams was announced with 30th-anniversary special limited series, cross-over events in ongoing titles, poster books, posters, trading cards, and even a Survival Guide to the X-Mansion
Tumblr media
This was the year when (what is now condescendingly referred to as) gimmick covers peaked. This was the year when Magneto’s real name was revealed only to be retracted/changed in X-Men Vol. 2 no. 72. This was the year when Captain America wasn’t leading the Avengers, instead it was Black Knight (Dane Whitman), Hercules was without a beard, the short-lived brown leather jackets were introduced for both teams and lastly, this was the year when both teams would be facing off against Magneto and his Acolytes
Trading Places and the Drama that came with it
Magneto’s son Quicksilver (married to the In-Human Crystal) had joined X-Factor, the Eternal Sersi is an Avenger; and so is Crystal. Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, She-Hulk, Warbird, Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau), Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, and Hawkeye (to name a few) take a back seat with some not even seen throughout the anniversary year which was quite disappointing for Avengers fans
However, for X-Men fans, seeing Magneto return with an enraged Messiah Complex thanks to being betrayed by one of his own disciples; to exact revenge on his long-time friend and rival Charles Xavier for what he and his students had done to him and his fortress of solitude in X-Men Vol. 2 no. 1-3; by breaking one of his students away from him
Friends becoming mortal Foes, crossing the lines which they had themselves established between them. Disillusionment amongst their followers, raging fanaticism fueled by a cruel past of a leader and his followers. Infidelity, and being forced to help a mortal enemy are some of the themes that were explored by the creators
Why 1993 remains important?
Increased digitization and the existence of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have adversely affected Marvel Comics. Making a buck out of selling comics is now harder which in turn has made Marvel introverted, and risk-averse; and as we are now in the 60th year of both teams; there are hardly any plans of celebrating both's history in an impactful as well as meaningful way like it was done three decades ago by Marvel Editorial
While the 30th Anniversary came without contributions from the very people that had made these teams Super-Fan Favorites; it sure occupies an important place within the hearts and minds of X-Men and Avengers fans to this day

8 Yunnan Architecture Tour - China Adventure Tour
While exploring Yunnan’s countryside, I have stumbled upon impressive and almost unknown architectural wonders. Here is a list of eight structures that are worth putting on your bucket-list.
1. Shuanlong Bridge of Daying
This bridge is considered as a marvel of ancient civil engineering that compete with Beijing’s Summer Palace (颐和园) ten-span bridge. Following a series of devastating floods during which the Lujiang and the Tachong Rivers merged into one near the village of Shui Daying, this seventeen-span bridge was built.
Known by locals as the ‘Seventeen Arches Bridge’ or Shiqi Kong Qiao (十七孔桥), it is also called the Shuanglong Qiao (双龙桥) or ‘Double-Dragon Bridge’, because the two rivers are said to meander in the valley like two dragons.
2. Huilan Pavilion of Baxin
Under this well-preserved stunning centuries-old historical pavilion and arched stone structure acted as a device that allowed for the regulation of the stream of water flowing from the Yilong Lake into the plains of Jianshui (建水). The name itself, Huilan Pavilion 洄澜阁 points to this function of water regulation. The character ‘hui’ 洄 means ‘whirling of water’ or ‘to go against the current’ (etymologically, water 氵returning 回) and ‘lan’ 澜 means ‘swelling waters’.
Since then, the water regulation device is cloaked and with the waters receding, it is no longer on the shores of the Yilong Lake. It is a still a wonder of ancient architecture in Yunnan province.

3. The Chen Clan Lineage Temple of Zhengying
Completed in 1925 in Zhengying (郑营), a small village that started off as a military outpost just 10 kilometers west of Shiping (石屏) in south Yunnan province, the Chen Clan Lineage Temple (陈家宗祠) is a large compound that includes a massive stone gate, a lotus pond, two main temples and wing halls built to honor the ancestors of the Chen family who had migrated from eastern China into the rural southwest borderland and amassed their wealth in mining and trade.
The Chan Clan Lineage Temple was secularized and you will not find any stone tablets or altars for ancestors worship lifestyle. Instead, it is now a recreational center for the village’s elderly who spend their afternoon chatting, playing mahjong or cards inside the wing hall.
4. Wu Family Courtyard of Heijing
Constructed between 1837 and 1858 in Heijing (黑井), the ancient salt capital of Yunnan, the Wu Family Courtyard (武家大院) with its wood and stone carvings that ornate the 99 different rooms on three floors, its garden surrounded by a wall, the ostentatious entrance gates, and the large scale of the building, is an astounding public display of luxury and wealth in a remote rural village of central Yunnan.
Shaped like character wang 王 which means ‘king’ in Chinese language, the Wu Family Courtyard is also an expression of the power and the www.athomepodcast.com of wealth family in the dominance of trade in Yunnan. Witness of a class of wealth salt merchants and traders which became extinct after the Communist took over the power in 1949, the Wu Family Courtyard is a unique structure and architectural wonder of Yunnan.
5. Wenchang Palace of Yiluo
Built in 1637, the Wenchang Palace (文昌宫) of Yiluo (绮罗), an ancient village near Tengchong (腾冲) in western Yunnan province, integrates the architectural features Confucius Temples (文庙) and Taoist temples and combine them into a large temple complex. Extended in the 1740s, the Wenchang Palace was renovated in 1851 and 2009 after being damaged during the Cultural Revolution. Local villagers call it the ‘Small Forbidden City’ (小故宫).
Inside, behind a half-moon shaped pool, we find several temples and halls dedicated to Confucius (孔子), Wenchang (文昌), the god of culture and literature, Nüwa (女娲), the goddess-creator of Chinese mythology, Kuixing (魁星), the god of scholars, and a performance stage.
6. Catholic Church of Dali
Tucked away in a courtyard right next to Dali ancient town’s busy shopping street, the Catholic Church of Dali (大理天主教堂) is an architectural masterpiece that combine the Western features of the church layout and the exceptional Bai construction style. Built in 1927 by foreign missionaries who had set out to evangelize southwest China, it is one of the 32 churches still active in western Yunnan.

7. Theater of Sideng village
In the center of Sideng, the main village of Shaxi valley, the Old Theatre is a masterpiece of the Bai people architecture and one of the main reason to come and visit.
Dominating the old Market Square, the Old Theatre stage stands face to face to the Xingjiao Temple so that the Buddhas may also enjoy performances with the people.
On each side of the Old Theatre, shops that catered to the caravan leaders and muleteers were transformed into coffee shops and storefronts for tourists. Behind the performance stage, there is a four-story Kuixing Tower (魁星阁). Kuixing is the deity of good fortune in examinations and was thus revered by scholars who wanted success in the imperial examination.
8. Ganden Sumtselin of Zhongdian
Established in 1679 by https://www.marimo-fmky.com, Sumtseling was built during the reign of emperor Kangxi 康熙 of the Qing dynasty, the layout of Sumtseling was designed to look like the Potala palace in Lhasa, but without any original blue prints, the architects were not able to make a faithful replica. Songzanlin Monastery monastery was given the name of ‘Ganden’ in reference to the Ganden monastery near Lhasa which was founded in 1409 by Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelupa order or Yellow Hat Sect. After Zhongdian changed its name into Shangri-la, the local government marketed Sumtseling as the ‘Little Potala’ and became known to tourists as ‘Songzanlin Temple’ (松赞林寺) in Chinese.

Either way my back hurts and this is probs going to take a few days. Also it think I've been sitting on the ground for like 2 of 3 maybe 4 hours. Having to go back and further between stock of doubles or mixed card stacks.
My hyperfocus and organization thing of cards came in handy bc I have not gotten bored.

INJUSTICE 3 GAME MOD
INJUSTICE 3 GAME ARCHIVE
At the moment, the only fighting game featuring DC Comics characters that has been announced is the more Smash Bros-like MultiVersus, which hopefully will get a release date soon.
INJUSTICE 3 GAME MOD
There are a total of 240 cards in this Injustice Gods Among Us Series 3 collection. Injustice 2 Mod Injustice 2 v5.3.
INJUSTICE 3 GAME ARCHIVE
What’s worse is that Boon does this so often fans don’t know when he’s joking - he’s previously done similar “just for fun” teases that came true for Mortal Kombat’s Alien, Spawn, and the whole Kombat Pack 2 DLC line-up.įans were previously hoping to see Injustice 3 at DC Fandome in October, but Ed Boon’s appearance there was just to talk about the Injustice animated movie. ' Injustice 3 ,' a game which has not been announced but has been the subject of rumors and speculation regardless, immediately started trending on social media after the Mortal Kombat 11 news. A ProJect To Create An Archive of All The Arcade, Trading And Game Cards In The World. The game also offers 6 different game styles, including Standard Battle, Challenge Mode, Online Battle, Survivor Mode, Breakthrough, and Phantom Zone. There are single-player and multiplayer modes. Just this year, Boon’s hinted at a Marvel Vs DC Comics fighting game and a remaster of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Game modes Injustice: Gods Among Us is playable for an average of 6 hours. Injustice 2 was a game-changer when it was released, thanks to some incredible storytelling, amazing combat and it being the only game in existence that actually got the idea of loot. NO tease for any kind of announcement.” It’s certainly not the first time he’s trolled fans hoping for a particular game announcement. I can’t not see an Injustice 3 being released eventually, what with NetherRealm having made Injustice a fighting game staple between Mortal Kombat releases. Unfortunately, this leak is in fact a big troll on fans by Ed Boon, who immediately followed it up with “this tweet was just for fun. (Photo : Injustice) 'Injustice 3: Gods Will Fall' would be the title of the third installment of the hit DC game franchise after a leak has surfaced on the internet, which hints at the sequel from. The Pixel 6A offers a lot of the flagship Pixel 6 formula in a smaller 6.1-inch form factor. It has the same speedy Tensor CPU, but Google ditched some premium features, like its wireless charging and a high-refresh screen, to keep the price down. All said, it offers great performance in an affordable package. Read our review. If you preorder the Pixel 6A for $449, you’ll get a complementary set of Pixel Buds A-Series. The phone releases on July 28th, so be on the lookout for your delivery on or after that date. Nature continues to heal (metaphorically, of course; reality still doesn’t look so good), and high-powered GPUs continue to become readily available — with added discounts. Speaking of which, EVGA is offering some great pricing on refurbished cards. The RTX 3070 Ti XC3 costs just $579.99 ($130 off), and the RTX 3070 Ti FTW3 is just $10 more at $589.99 ($230 off). These cards are very similar, with the FTW3 having a marginally faster clock speed and bolder RGB lighting. Whichever one strikes your fancy, they’re both slightly faster than the Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti Founders Edition. And with these prices, these refurbished models cost slightly less, too. EVGA calls them “B-stock” merchandise, but they’re refurbished. Even so, EVGA claims that they offer the “performance and reliability of a new product of the same model.” Additionally, each comes with a one-year warranty. One extra thing to keep in mind is that if you haven’t bought a video card recently, be sure to check the measurements of whatever case you plan to install it in.
These things can take up a whole lot of space. EVGA’s RTX 3070 Ti FTW3 Ultra is a PCI-Express 4.0 video card sporting 8GB of graphics memory, DLSS, and ray tracing. Yes, it’s 2022, so that means that it’s a little long in the tooth now, but it’s much cheaper than the current model. And, its AMD Ryzen 7 5800HS processor, RTX 3060, 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD are still very capable today — especially since it’s only outputting 1080p to its 14-inch 144Hz screen. Just keep in mind that it lacks a webcam, so you’ll need an external option if Zoom calls are a major part of your routine. Read our review.
