Did you know that @toadalled drew a bestiary for GryphIns? All of the animals and plants in the series are based on real (often extinct in our world) species, and she did a great job bringing them to life.
Pictured:
Basilosaurus, or serpentine whale to gryphons. A species of prehistoric whale that had a long body.
Dimetrodon, or a sailfin if you're a gryphon.
Capybara, the cutest little rodent.
Kakapo, or a ground parrot if you're a gryphon. The books include both the extant kakapo and its heracles extinct cousin.
Mata mata, though the GryphIns version is based on some prehistoric ancestors.
Goliath birds in GryphIns are a catch-all term that refers to elephant birds, moa, and (pictured here) terror birds.
And last (but not least), a varanus or weald monitor.

New art!! Dove a little deeper into Mayan and Aztec cultures with this one. The shapes of their statues and architecture are so cool! Also Matamata turtles had a part to play in the inspiration too 🐢

Tumblr's Favourite Animal - CONTENDERS (#8)
Continuing with the introductions...
That's a snazzy looking turtle! It's called mata mata (Chelus fimbriata) and it comes from the Amazon river basin and the eastern Guianas. Mata matas were thought to have also lived in the Orinoco basin, but as it turns out, those populations belong to another species. Its shell is reminiscent of a floating piece of bark, and its head resembles a fallen leaf. It lies on the riverbed, breathing through its long snout and using its skin flaps to blend in with its surroundings. When an unsuspecting fish arrives, it ambushes its prey by sucking it in through its wide mouth.

Matamata turtle appreciation post
‘They look like they told a dad joke and are happy you laughed at it.
Look at them. Not a thought behind those eyes.
They either look so fucking precious, or they look like you told them you ate your diarrhea for breakfast this morning.
Also their noses are really really long and it’s so silly :)
Also! Also! This is how their mouth opens.
Fun fact! Matamata turtles eat their prey by using their mouth as a vacuum cleaner and SUCKING THEM UP. ITS FUCKING HILARIOUS AND I LOVE THEM.
My Raphael for my tmnt iteration is a matamata and he is very silly.
