why did you give us hearts we don’t understand?
Matt didn’t understand the confliction he felt. It seemed simple from the outside looking in. Why believe in someone that doesn’t believe in you? Why ask for forgiveness for what was done to him; what was put inside him? Why continue to forgive someone who has taken everything they could possibly take?
There had been moments of doubt throughout his life. Violent shades of anger, piercing blows of grief, cold winters of loneliness, and frustrating winds of complexity. But he always found peace and understanding in scripture. His shoulders always felt a little lighter after confession. His heart rose above the sea level in his chest when he prayed.
Everything had a purpose. Losing his sight. Losing his father. Losing Elektra.
But twice? Losing the person he loved most in this world, having them die in your arms, twice, that was cruel.
Matt had thought his abilities were a gift. A trade for his loss of sight. He believed the hellfire he felt in his heart was a test of his faith and his strength to be a warrior of God. He believed the blood of the Devil in his veins is what aided him in fighting for truth and justice. It was that extra kick he needed to protect the innocent. The Devil himself had been an angel once, God’s favorite even.
But Matthew Murdock was not God’s favorite.
And he didn’t really care anymore. Because he was never God’s to begin with.
His abilities were a curse. The wicked flames that split open his knuckles and fueled his thirst for blood weren’t holy in origin. He hadn’t been crafted with pieces of the Devil. He had been created by the Devil.
He was raised to believe in a God that didn’t believe in him. He gave his blood, sweat, and skin in exchange for a cause that was never his to begin with, and for what? A lonely life full of loss, torment, and pain.
Maybe that’s why he felt so torn. He spent his whole life thinking he was fighting on the right side. Being told that if he followed the rules, he could be saved. If he sacrificed himself, he would be good. It would all be worth it in the end, when God welcomed him into his home in the next life.
It was all bullshit. God was never inviting him into his home. He never even answered when he called. It didn’t matter if he prayed until his knees bled, saved a hundred lives, brought justice to the real monsters that walked the Earth; none of it mattered.
So why did he still tense up when he heard sirens? Why did he have the itch to run across the rooftops when he heard screams for help? Why did he still want to fight? What was he fighting for? Who was he fighting for?
Did he even make a difference anyway? It had been weeks since Matt had been protecting the city from the shadows, and it felt like nothing had really changed. Maybe he was just a different kind of monster that lurked in the dark.
Matt tilted his head back slowly, his blank, bruised eyes gazing upwards towards the stained glass window he knew was right above his head that depicted one of the saints.
He wasn’t one of them.
“If I ever want to change, would this all remain the same?”
His whispers echoed in the silence of the church basement like thunder. He wasn’t sure who he was asking. He wasn’t sure if he even cared to know the answer. He wasn’t sure who he was anymore.
But he knew that he would rather die as the Devil than live as Matt Murdock.

It's Matt, on the other hand, enjoys your suffering probably more than he really should. Matt is Mr. Nice Guy in his daily life. His smile and way of words can help him into any room he pleases. Being a lawyer with charisma opens many doors. But at night, when he comes back from drawing the life from the world's scum, he wants "Yes, sir. No, sir."
Anyways, back to the main event. Imagine both men coming back from a long night on the New York City streets. Kingpin, being the major dickwad he is, enjoys making their lives as hard as humanly possible. That lowlife wakes up with a thirst for vengeance and it's utterly pathetic. You retired early for the night, knowing that neither Matt nor Frank would be happy to see you pacing by the doorway for when they come home. It pisses them off more than anything.
Sometime around 2 in the morning, you hear the sound of military boots being dropped and the doorway being shut. It's your boys. And all they can think of right now is how badly they need you. It doesn't matter that they're covered in blood and bruises, you're the only thing on their mind. With the ugliness of the world, being reminded that you exist untainted by the darkness is their greatest comfort.
They wanna feel every inch of your body, fucking you into the mattress and watching you tremble orgasm after orgasm. They love how you plead to be filled up, nothing more than a hole for them. Cum play is probably one of their favorite things to indulge in with you. And spitters are quitters, just saying.
They enjoy nicknames as well. Matty and Franky, sir, daddy, baby, my love, sweetheart, and once in a while they'll let you call them by their vigilante names.

Hey, could you elaborate a bit on the "not allowed to have comfort or happiness in my own skin" for Matt murdock? v curious bc im writing a fic but I put the classic Catholic Guilt, so would love to know what you think about this alternative
Sure! Now that I think about it, I could have phrased it better, but basically what I meant was that when I write Matt denying himself, it’s not explicitly scripture-based. That is, I don’t think he thinks “I can’t kiss a boy because the church says that’s a sin.” I don’t think he thinks it through at all, really. I think he just has a kneejerk tendency to deny anything that might either bring him pleasure (like sex or love), or allow him to stop feeling like he’s bad and broken (like being okay with his sexuality). (And then he veers wildly back and forth between intense denial and total id because neither is sustainable, but that’s more in the comics.) The root of it is still tied into his Catholicism and the underlying notions of sacrifice and penance that he associates with it, but he’s not drawing a straight line between “traditional Catholicism is anti-gay” and “therefore I cannot be bi.”
(I also tend to take this tack in large part because I am not Catholic except 50% by birth and thus don’t really feel like it’s my lane to talk about the church and it’s teachings and what it’s like to be raised in it, but I am very happy to be corrected if I eff it up anyway.)

NEON SPILLS ONTO THE SIDEWALK ; rain laden concrete reflecting back pinks and blues in a cacophony of color. It’s dizzying to watch, or would be if he was. Instead, his fascination lies at the metal marble in the palm of his hand. A shining, metallic thing as cold as the reflections were bright. Perfectly contained within the palm of his hand.
Perhaps he’s had one too many. But it fascinates him, just how much sits there. A weapon. A toy. A decoration. His own world is a violent one and he wonders if it were anything else if this would be with him, in his hand, on his person. Did what you carry make the world, or did the world make you carry what you did? “You know that hymn?”
Matt’s arm shifts in his, a smile tugging on lips that Barney feels are far too amused for how much the man is leaning on him. (Or is it the other way around?) “Which one?”
Barney’s nose wrinkles. Choir boy he is not. “He got the whole world in his hand…” The thought suddenly seems far more incredulous than it ever did before. He laughs with a toss of his head. “Some world. Or some palm… Does the palm make the world or the world make the palm?”
Matt’s hum is placating. “Perhaps a bit of both. It goes back to nature versus nurture, in a way, and I believe the official science on that one is still up for debate.” A hand pats Barney’s arm. “Though if we’re going by pure scripture, well, I believe the entire first chapter was dedicated to your answer. Careful there…”
Without thought Barney pauses, curb waiting to catch his foot. For a moment the thought flickers through him; how did Matt know. But the light clicks to red and the mystery fades away, replaced with consideration given once more to the marble in hand.
His face scrunches, nose even more crooked in the late night lights. “So if we’re all made in his image then, guess I really do got my own world in my hands, eh?”
Matt’s fingers press into his arm as eyes furrow behind glasses. “I’m not following.”
And this time he at least remembers to press the marble to Matt’s fingers. Letting him feel the shape, the weight. Watching in fascination as hands that aren’t his map the surface with such smooth ease he wonders, wonders, wonders just what it is Matt holds when Barney isn’t there.
“Easy to hold and portable. That’s quite the world you’ve got there.” It’s said seriously but even his brain senses a certain slick and sly smile in there. “What is it even?”
Barney takes it when it’s offered back and considers it as well. A point of being. Perhaps not in any actual sense of the term, but it’s saved his so many times he’s unsure where to even start. “Just the world that’s saved my life once. Twice.” Too many times to count. And he sobers slightly then. “Flicks good ‘n cracks a few bones when it hits right.”
“Well I’m pretty sure God, big g or not, wouldn’t want the world used to crack skulls.”
“You sure? Cause feel like my head gets cracked open every damn year we spin ‘round.” An exaggerated sigh. “Aliens! Wormholes! Super heroes! All this cool shit and STILL no hover boards. How long I really gotta wait???”
Head shakes as he glances sideways at Matt. Finds the man in mid-laugh, arm squeezing his own just a bit tighter. Enough to send a curl of warmth through him. “Perhaps your miniature world there is hogging all the hover boards.”
“Now see here, if it was MY world-” He turns to argue - he would NEVER deprive the public of their god given right to hover boards - and it falls. Marble slipping through his fingers, bouncing helplessly on the pavement with a ping. Matt moves then, so fast Barney can barely track. Free hand reaching out to grab the marble with perfect, precise aim.
Barney stares, alcohol fuzzed brain working the angles. “How…”
“Luck,” Matt says, a bit quick perhaps. A bit breathless. (Surprised? He doesn’t think so, though Barney isn’t sure.) Yet Matt’s slender fingers offer out the marble. A smile definite and defined now on his lips. Light glinting off red glasses; a halo of neon around red. “I believe you dropped the world?”
He takes it with a clumsy hand. Nose wrinkled. Until he laughs, suddenly. Alacrity in the fact that if he were God he’d likely be doing just as shitty a job at it. (Or perhaps some deeper recognition that when things drop, he doesn’t always have to face them alone.)
“My hero. World saved by one Matt Murdock…”
And he turns back to Matt, letting the moment take him to close to press a sloppy, shy kiss to the corner of Matt’s mouth. He draws back quickly, because he’s not so far gone he doesn’t know what that was. Clears his throat and feels his pulse rise as he tries to find purchase again. Pressing the marble back into Matt’s hand.
“You, uh. You keep it,” he murmurs. “Might save ya one day too.”

So I’m looking through a lot of Matt and Foggy friendship and slash fics and I have yet to find one that references David and Jonathan.
They exist, right?

Okay, their very first meeting? (1 Samuel 18.i-iv) “When David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as his own soul. Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that he was wearing and gave it to David and his armour and even his sword and his bow and his belt.”
1 Samuel 19.i(b) “But Saul’s son Jonathan took great delight in David.”
1 Sam 20.xvii “Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him; for he loved him as he loved his own life.”
(How often are you gonna tell us how much Jonathan loves David? That’s four times *explicitly* in three chapters.)
Then Jonathan took David’s side against his own father and told him when Saul was planning to kill him and helped him escape. “He [David] bowed three times and they kissed each other and wept with each other; David wept the more.” (1 Sam 20.xli(b))
After Jonathan was killed in battle, David lamented, “How the mighty have fallen in the midst of battle! Jonathan lies slain upon your high places. I am distressed your you, my brother Jonathan; greatly beloved were you to me; your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.” (2 Sam 1.xxv-xxvi)
It’s one of the classic male-male relationships of all time/story. Like Damon and Pythias. And Matt Murdock knows his Scripture. Even Foggy went to Catholic school.

So Diana Di Angelo became Lea Hale, a nobody with no family but with a fierce determination to atone for the things she’s done. A chance meeting with one Matt Murdock in college is enough to bring everything screeching into perspective. There are bad men in New York, and they take it upon themselves to stop them.
They become shadows, haunting the nightmares of the criminals of New York and nobody has any clue that the Devils of Hell’s Kitchen are really the polite young couple who orders Thai Food every Wednesday night and who frequent that shit Dive Bar on the corner.
This is the life that she chooses and whether Lea Hale was real or not, it doesn’t matter because Lea Murdock does, and she can make a difference.

I saw a post on your blog about different films being good representations of Christianity, and how the shack isn't one. I was wondering, what do you think about Daredevil... if you've seen it?
Hi, Anon! :D
I have not seen Daredevil (I’m assuming the Netflix series, but it’s kinda regardless, cuz I haven’t watched the old movie either lol).
However, what I can say is that I wouldn’t put them in the same category as The Shack, as The Shack presents itself as Christian (heretical, and poorly-scripted, but claims the name). Matt Murdock’s character is Catholic (I had to ask someone for that context), but from what I know of the character from the show is that he tends to sleep around a lot and is, well, a little murdery….So.
My -admittedly rather uninformed - answer then, is that Daredevil is probably not a good representation of Christianity (or Catholicism for that matter). However, it also does not put itself out as “HEY LOOK AT THIS CHRISTIAN STUFF THIS IS GOOD” so I have much less of a beef with shows like that as opposed to novels or movies that claim to represent our faith intentionally and directly and make a bad showing of it, or worse: teach something that is in complete disagreement with Scripture.
I hope that helps to answer your question. Daredevil is a show I’ve been wanting to get into, but a) time and b) I think one dark/morally grey show on my watchlist is enough. :)
