hallowed be thy unknown Ch2: Haunted Turnabout 2: Bugloss, Baby's Breath, and Lavender
Waking up for a second time in a holding cell in the metropolitan detention center was a markedly different experience than the first. Having slept instead of passing out meant that her body didn't hurt as much, even if her head ached. Crying a lot dehydrated her and she didn't drink anything but cocoa the day before. Maya rolled off the cot and fumbled for her phone. Thankfully, along with the wiretap and the autopsy report shoved in her sash, she hadn't dropped or broken it.
She has kept it in her grasp the whole time she was out, like a teddy-bear or some other comfort item.
"Battery is fine, from what I could see." Maya jumped and let out a strangled noise. She had forgotten Phoenix was here. Judging by how he was smirking at her, not even disguising his laughter, he was banking on that.
"Don't do that to me!" Maya rubbed at her eyes with the ball of her hand, the pressure alleviating the dull pain in the back of her eye sockets. "I almost threw my phone at you."
"Please don't do that. It's evidence."
Maya sighed through her teeth. "What time is it?"
"I...think it's maybe eight? Nine?" Phoenix hummed as he floated lazily on his back. His scarf brushed the ground, the ends phasing gently through the cell floor, making him look a little like some kind of strange mushroom. "The trial is supposed to start sometime around ten, so we have an hour at the least to prepare."
"Let me get a drink first." Maya shoved her phone in her sash and padded to the sink in the corner of her cell. After taking a few sips of water out of her cupped hands, she splashed her face and shook her hands dry. Then she started undoing her hair.
"Trying to look presentable?"
"I'd rather not look like a murderer when I have to argue that I'm not actually a murderer." Maya combed her fingers through the full length of her hair, wincing as she caught on a few snags. "Besides...it's soothing."
"I'll bet. All I ever had to do was gel mine." He did look like his hair was a simple affair. His morning routine must've been quick.
After a few minutes of combing her hair, Maya spoke up again. The water she drank did wonders to soothe her hoarse throat and lift her spirits. "So, let's prepare. What do I need to know?" Busy hands, busy mind. She was doing her best to not give herself space to sink into the mire of grief that was waiting to swallow her whole.
"General or specifics?"
"Start with general, then narrow it down." Putting her hair up was a time-consuming thing but it was a daily ritual she was used to. Any sense of normality helped right now. "What can I expect in a trial like this?"
"Well it's a murder trial. Probably open gallery, probably meant to be solved quickly, or that's what the prosecution is banking on."
"You mean Prosecutor Edgeworth? He's going to want this to be over with?" She sneered, deft hands pulling her hair up as she talked.
"Even Edgeworth doesn't want to be at court before noon. Preparing for a trial is an hour or more's worth of effort and ten am is a real early hour, let alone nine or eight. Are you a morning person?" Phoenix looked over at Maya, who rolled her eyes. "Yeah, I thought so. Anyway, uh, trial...trial...trial..."
Maya finished working on her hair and leaned back a bit, resting on her hands. "Open court, early trial, in and out."
"Man I miss burgers," Phoenix whined.
"Shut up about burgers." Her stomach growled at the thought.
"Trial, right..." He seemed to find his train of thought from before and hopped back on. "You're looking to appeal to the judge using evidence and facts to get the ruling you want. Pointing out contradictions in testimonies, connecting evidence to each other, and arguing your point using logic is the whole deal."
That sounded easy enough. Maya was halfway decent at puzzles so it couldn't be any more difficult than doing a word-search or sudoku. Just...publicly. In front of people who wanted her to go to jail for life. No pressure.
"Sometimes you want to get a little...creative to prove a point, but that's the basis of a trial. You just need to know the law, the evidence, and the flaw in the witness' testimony."
"Creative? Like lying?" Wasn't lying in court a crime? She was pretty sure that was perjury.
"No, no!" Phoenix laughed. "More like...coloring outside the lines? Suggesting the sky is red to prove it was sunset, not midday. Nothing quite like lying."
"I don't know exactly what you're suggesting but I'll bet I can figure it out as I go."
"Yeah, it won't be that hard. It's a little like improv."
"I know nothing about theater."
"Nobody's perfect."
"Specifics, then, since I think we've covered the basics of this case." Maya quickly changed the subject.
"One last bit of general knowledge: there's a chance we will get more than one day out of this trial. Barring the occasional recess, we have three days and a handful of hours to make our case. We have to be deft with our arguments. No messing about, even if you want to bite the witness' head off." Was he warning her about April May? Did he think she was incapable of controlling herself?
Considering how aggressive she got with Prosecutor Edgeworth in questioning, that was actually a fair worry to have.
"Now...specifics. You have the autopsy report still, right?"
"Right." Maya fished it out of her sash and unfolded it. Mia's name, age, and death stared her in the face in dark black print. She winced and folded it back up again, shoving it out of sight once more.
"The wiretap and your phone are our secret weapons. Don't pull them out or mention them unless we're in a bind and have nothing else." Phoenix looked surprisingly stern about that. "But the autopsy report is a piece of evidence we have access to immediately. That's free game. Use that."
"Use it how?"
"Odds are that during the trial, more evidence will be added to the court record over time. That evidence is, in accordance with evidence law, legal and fair use for both sides. The autopsy report is one of those pieces of evidence. They'll likely add a floorplan of the office as well, if only for tracking the victim and killers movements. Also anything found at the scene of the crime that might be relevant, like the receipt with your name on it or the glass from the light stand. We have to start building our defense based around that."
"We know who actually did it though!" Maya reached for her phone.
Phoenix's smile strained, twisted with sorrow, and Maya stayed her hand. "We can't prove it. Not yet." He was right and she hated it. "But we can, if we're careful and smart, prove May tapped the office. That will discredit her as a witness and buy us another day to gather evidence and testimony. Maybe we can even get her to give up her boss."
Maya's fingernails bit into her palms as she squeezed her hands into tight fists. "Okay. Okay. And all I need to do is listen to what you tell me and argue like my life depends on it?"
"Not quite 'argue', but yes. Like your life depends on it, because it does." Phoenix gave Maya one last lazy grin and righted himself in midair. "You got this, Maya. Remember what I told you."
"Imitate Mia." She took a deep breath, held it, then exhaled slowly. "Right. Thanks, Phoenix."
"You're welcome! Now, chin up, here comes the cavalry!" Maya stood up as he said that and turned to face the door to her holding cell. Two of the faceless cops were there to take her to the courthouse, fighting the stubborn cell lock.
When the door opened, one of them walked in while the other remained outside her cell. "Miss Maya Fey," one of them called out. Maya stepped forward and offered her hands. The officer cuffed her and motioned for her to follow them.
"Have you eaten?" The cop in front of her asked. Maya frowned, unsure of what they were after.
"No?"
"There should be snacks in the defendant's lobby. Detective Gumshoe asked we prepare them for you."
Oh. "That's...kind."
"That's Detective Gumshoe for you!" The cop sounded delighted just talking about the large man. "He's a real sweetheart. One time he brought a baker's dozen variety box for everyone working a rough shift. I almost cried."
"I did cry," the other cop added.
"Detective Gumshoe sure seems like he's beloved." Phoenix whistled in awe. He was walking in lockstep with Maya, half-in half-out the wall next to her. "That's something to consider. Nice of Lana to let us borrow such a good man."
Detective Gumshoe...he was one of the more kind people Maya had to interact with yesterday. If it wasn't for the fact that he seemed to worship the ground Prosecutor Edgeworth walked on, he might even be her friend. But he did, so he wasn't.
The rest of the walk to Defendant Lobby No.1 was moderately silent. Even Phoenix was deep in thought, worrying the ends of his scarf as he floated. Maya, too, was thinking a lot.
Thoughts about evidence and arguing and who really killed Mia. Thoughts about Prosecutor Edgeworth and April May. Thoughts about all the people in the gallery who would be watching her, judging her. The short, chubby girl in weird traditional clothing who was being accused of killing her sister. They'd think she deserved the verdict being handed to her, that she was a weird little cultist or something.
Maya took a deep breath, held it, then exhaled. Be like Mia. What would Mia do? She'd ignore the whispers. She'd hold her head high.
The inside of the defendant's lobby was nice and, like the cops had said, there were snacks. Bottled water, a bagel with a single serving of cream cheese, and a small orange. A halfway decent breakfast, actually.
"That's really nice of Gumshoe, actually. Wow."
Maya didn't bother responding, just immediately smeared the inside of the bagel with cream cheese using a plastic knife from a package of disposable utensils. Then she took a huge bite and washed it down with water. It was the best bagel she'd ever had.
It sat a little heavy in her stomach but that might've been her nerves.
"Remember: be professional. Be like Mia. Don't talk out of turn without objecting first. Don't push too hard. Watch your language and your tone. Don't get too emotional." Phoenix coached from where he was floating near the door to the courtroom.
Maya took another bite out of the bagel, her handcuffs rattling a bit as she did. "Be calm, be like Mia. Be calm, be like Mia." She accidentally inhaled bagel crumbs and coughed for a couple moments. Water fixed the issue but it put her off food for a second so she idly peeled the orange to kill time.
"Please don't die." Maya had the feeling Phoenix wasn't joking when he asked her that.
"No dying before my trial." She ate an orange slice. Juice dripped down her fingers and she frowned. "I wonder if I can clean my hands before I enter..."
"Wipe down using the water and a napkin before your fingers get sticky," Phoenix advised.
Maya scrubbed her fingers clean. With a full stomach, she felt better about her chances. Now she just needed to get the cuffs off and she'd feel way better about her chances.
Being uncuffed did nothing to calm Maya's nerves, it turned out. She just had full range of motion with her arms now. Yay.
The courtroom looked enormous and intimidating from her place on the witness stand. The judge—an older bearded man with a stern face—was sitting feet above everyone else, peering down his nose at both benches and the witness stand. The gallery was filled with murmuring masses at about the same level as the judge. On either side of the witness stand, forming parentheticals when viewed from high-up, were the prosecution and defense's benches.
The only unoccupied parts of the courtroom were the defendant's seat and the defense's bench—both of which should be filled by Maya, but she was too busy sweating bullets at the stand. Well, actually, Phoenix was standing behind the defense's bench but he was visible only to Maya, so it looked empty to everyone else.
"Stating the case, checking to make sure both sides are ready, opening statement from the prosecution, then the first witness." Phoenix laid out the starting part of the trial for her as he stood at the ready. This was the most professional she'd ever seen him, his posture rigid, his face stern and a little unreadable, and his feet firmly on the ground. He was taking this seriously. She should too.
Opposite him, Prosecutor Edgeworth looked as clean-pressed and as cold as he was the day before. Nothing about him had changed and that made Maya a little frustrated.
Couldn't he at least pretend to feel guilty about pinning her with a murder charge? Even a little bit?
The judge banged his little hammer—gavel?—on his podium and the idle chatter of the gallery faded to silence. "Court is now in session for the trial of Maya Fey. Am I to understand that the defendant will be representing herself?" The judge's voice, while it did betray his age, was firm and carried well through the vaulted hall.
"The judge is 'Your Honor'," Phoenix supplied.
Maya straightened up and tilted her chin, trying her best to imitate Mia as she spoke. "Yes, Your Honor."
"Is there any reason why?"
Phoenix shrugged at her. "Can't hurt to be honest?"
"I was unable to find a lawyer willing to push for full acquittal and have been studying law in my spare time." It's not technically perjury, right? Only half of that statement was untrue.
Prosecutor Edgeworth snorted derisively. "Please. Do you really think that you can hold your own here? Let alone overturn the charges against you?"
"I believe that the truth will prevail. I didn't kill Mia. That is the truth." Maya didn't even need to pretend to be Mia then. The frustration she felt at being talked down to was enough to banish her nerves.
"Very well," the judge sighed and gestured for her to take her place at the bench, "Let us begin."
"The defense is ready," Phoenix offered.
Maya repeated with gusto. "The defense is ready, Your Honor."
"The prosecution is ready, Your Honor." Prosecutor Edgeworth was playing this by the books, it seemed.
"Your opening statement?" The judge prompted.
An opening statement, Maya remembered, was a way for the prosecution to summarize their case against the defendant. The cliffnotes version of all their paperwork, as it were. If they still used juries in trials, the opening statement would be the hook to entice the jurors' attention and sway their ruling.
"Your Honor, the defendant was found unconscious at the scene of the crime on the night of the murder. An eyewitness account places her there during the act, as the perpetrator and the prosecution has decisive evidence that points to her as well." Prosecutor Edgeworth tapped the stack of papers in his hand on his bench, settling them and putting them down as a show that he was done recounting the facts of the matter. "While she vehemently insists she is innocent, there is no doubt in our mind she is guilty of manslaughter, if not outright murder."
"A bold but understandable claim." He won over the judge easily, it seemed. Maya bit back a frown.
"Thank you, Your Honor." Prosecutor Edgeworth gave a little bow. It made Maya's blood boil. She wanted to clonk him on the back of the head with the Thinker. Asshole. "The prosecution calls its first witness, Detective Gumshoe, to the stand."
From beside her, Phoenix let out a held breath. "Listen closely. The court stenographer will provide you with typed versions of any and all witness testimonies as they occur but hearing how things are said are just as important as hearing what is being said."
Maya nodded and turned her attention away from smug-ass Prosecutor Edgeworth and to the enormous man taking to the witness stand.
"Witness, please state your name and occupation." Like the judge, Prosecutor Edgeworth spoke with authority and force. Maybe there was a trick to talking like that. Maybe she should ask Phoenix what it was.
"Dick Gumshoe, homicide detective for the local precinct, sir!" Detective Gumshoe looked tense, even as he saluted.
"Tell us about the investigation," Prosecutor Edgeworth commanded.
Detective Gumshoe nodded and began. "The victim, Miss Mia Fey, was found dead at about ten pm on the fifth. Her body was leanin' against the wall beneath the window of her office. She'd been struck once by a blunt object and that's what killed her."
"The murder weapon?"
"He's getting evidence added," Phoenix explained.
"This statue of the Thinker." Detective Gumshoe reached into his jacket pocket and pulled a labeled bag out. Inside was the murder weapon, the so-called 'statue'.
"It's been processed. See the label there?" Phoenix pointed at the laminated label on the bag. "That has the casefile, identification, time of recovery, verification date, and supplementary information on it. If we need to get a closer look, we can request to see it or I can just float over and take a peek so you don't have to put on gloves."
You probably would need gloves to handle evidence, wouldn't you.
Maya suddenly realized something, pulled the autopsy report out of her sash, and unfolded it, trying to smooth the creases out of it against the bench. This was going to be important soon enough.
"Now, continue your testimony." Prosecutor Edgeworth didn't even give Detective Gumshoe a second to rest, immediately demanding he keep talking. No wonder he was starved for praise. "You arrested the defendant at the scene, in spite of her being unconscious, correct? Explain yourself."
"Well, see, we had decisive evidence she did it, sir. That's why me and the boys clapped the unconscious defendant and dropped her in the center." Prosecutor Edgeworth raised a singular eyebrow. Detective Gumshoe swallowed and started to speak again, spurred on by whatever emotion that stirred in him. "I was one of the first to arrive on the scene. Got there about five minutes after the call came in. There was the body of the victim layin' there but so was the defendant. She was out cold and that was worryin' and all, but she was breathing. After checkin' she was good, we picked Miss Maya up. The whole reason we even grabbed her is coz the eyewitness said she did it, which is pretty damning. Anyway, I stayed behind while she was bein' processed so I could help with the investigation and found some hard evidence."
"Defense?" The judge turned to look at Maya. She straightened up and made direct eye-contact with him.
"Yes, Your Honor?"
"Your cross-examination?" Oh. He was prompting her. How kind.
"Of course. Thank you, Your Honor." Maya looked at the papers the stenographer handed her.
Each line of Detective Gumshoe's testimony was typed out with immaculate accuracy. Maya was impressed with the quality. Court stenographers were to be feared.
Still...Detective Gumshoe's testimony wasn't openly incorrect. Mia had been dead when the police arrived. Maya had already passed out, too, so she was unable to explain herself. April May said she did it so Detective Gumshoe was telling the truth by quoting her as the reason they arrested her.
She must've been making a face because Phoenix clicked his tongue in amusement. "Remember when I said sometimes you need to say the sky is red to prove the sun was setting?" Maya barely nodded at him but he seemed to pick up on it anyway. "This is similar. When you can't find an immediate problem with a testimony—like this one—press every statement. The witness is bound to slip up eventually, accidentally undoing their entire testimony with one misplaced word."
"Alright." Maya turned to face Detective Gumshoe, the transcript in her hand, and began her cross-examination by starting from the beginning.
"You said you arrived first on the scene, about five minutes after the police were called?" Maya locked eyes with the detective.
He gave her an asymmetrical and very sincere grin. "Well, yeah! The motto of the precinct this month is 'fast response'!"
"They've had less complaints, that's for sure," Phoenix noted.
"And the witness, April May, is the one who called you from her room in the Gatewater?" Maya wondered if he had any exploitable opinions about her.
"Yeah." The smile on Detective Gumshoe's face faltered a little, but didn't disappear entirely. "But you already knew that, didn't you, pal?"
"He's got you there."
"True." Maya swallowed a flash of shame and continued. "I just wanted to make sure of that fact."
"Please refrain from wasting the court's time with pointless questions," Prosecutor Edgeworth added. Maya's grip on the transcript tightened. She had to force herself to loosen her fist so she could read it again.
"Of course." Turning back to Detective Gumshoe, Maya scanned down the transcript a bit.
"Ask about why they arrested you, an unconscious minor." When Maya shot Phoenix an accusatory glare, he rolled his eyes. "I know, but maybe you can get an extra mile out of your age. No harm in trying."
"So you found a dead woman and an unconscious minor and simply arrested the latter?" Maya tried her best to sound neutral but she was pretty sure that she just came off as irritated.
"Objection!" Prosecutor Edgeworth shouted from across the court. The sound of his hand against the desk startled Maya and she dropped the transcript. "The defendant's age does not matter in this regard due to, quote, 'hard evidence', unquote, given to the investigative team on their way to the crime scene."
"Counter: your age means processing you for arrest should be handled differently than an adult."
"Objection!" Maya did her best to shout back with gusto. She felt a little silly. "As I am underage and not legally an adult, aren't there different ways to process my arrest?"
"Is that a concern, Miss Fey?" Prosecutor Edgeworth snidely asked. "Detention without notifying your guardian?"
Maya gritted her teeth and steadier herself. "No, Prosecutor Edgeworth. I am simply pointing out that, with regards to my arrest, I believe it was mishandled."
"Then the prosecutor's office will take that up with law enforcement at a later date. It has no bearing on this case or the charges against you." Cool as a cucumber, the prosecutor waved a hand at her, dismissing her concerns.
"Objection sustained," the judge banged his gavel and that was that.
Maya's cheeks were hot with embarrassment.
"Chin up. That was a long-shot anyway." Phoenix wrapped and unwrapped the end of his scarf around his hand as he thought. "Damning evidence is vague and Edgeworth called it 'hard evidence' before so I think Gumshoe is adjusting his wording on the stand. Try that."
"Detective Gumshoe, you arrested me due to an eyewitness account, correct?" Simple sentences meant she had less space to trip over her words. Direct and to the point would be better overall.
"Yeah?" Detective Gumshoe looked confused. To be fair, it was a strange start to a line of questioning but she had an idea on how to approach this.
"What made you and your, quote, 'boys', unquote, decide to blindly believe her? This so-called 'hard evidence'?" Pointed words, pointed questions. She was trying her best to find a chink in his armor.
"Well, like you said Miss Maya: we had hard evidence."
"There we go." Phoenix was grinning. "Assume the evidence was the testimony. That will discredit him on that front."
It felt bad to attack Detective Gumshoe like this but...life or death. Her life or death. "In what world is what some pink voyeur's opinion considered 'hard evidence'?"
"Whoops. Watch how you say stuff."
"Hey!" Detective Gumshoe frowned at her, upset either by her choice of words or her accusation. "When did I say Miss May's statement was the 'hard evidence'?"
"You certainly didn't say what 'hard evidence' you did have." Prosecutor Edgeworth wagged his pointer finger at the detective. "It's not a stretch to assume you meant her statement as opposed to anything else."
"W-well yeah, no!" Detective Gumshoe backpedaled. "That's not what I meant though! Miss May's testimony is a whole different thing! The evidence is, uh..." He rifled through his pockets again and pulled out another evidence bag—smaller and flat. "Here we go!"
"There it is." Phoenix's expression became grim. He stared at the new evidence.
"What is this?" The judge asked.
"This is the 'hard evidence' that I said called for Miss Maya's arrest. It's got her name on it in the victim's blood." He sounded so proud of himself.
Across the courtroom, Prosecutor Edgeworth looked smug and satisfied. It took everything Maya had to not gnash her teeth and scream in frustration.
"...how would she have even had time to write your name?" That...was a good question. She just had to find an opening.
"Detective!" Detective Gumshoe jumped to attention. "Testify to the acquisition of this evidence."
"Yes sir!" Once again, the detective began his testimony. Hopefully this one would be easier to disprove. "The blood is a positive match to the victims. In addition, we found blood under the fingernail of her right index finger. This points to her having written the name of her killer! That is, unfortunately, the defendant."
"Mia is right-handed so asking about the finger would be pointless because they'd assume anyways. We can't contest the blood test because it is a positive match. But why would the killer try and frame you?"
"You may now cross-examine the witness," the judge prompted. Maya gave him a polite half-bow and quickly scanned the new transcript handed to her. She was steadily accruing a pile of papers. It made her wish for a manilla folder or some kind of binder to hold them all.
"Detective, you said that the v— that Mia wrote my name on this paper in her own blood." Deep breaths. Deep, deep breaths. "What makes you think that the name she wrote down is that of her killer?"
"Well isn't that how it always goes?"
The courtroom fell silent. Even Phoenix, who had been rather laid back to this point, looked befuddled. "Does - does he think that this is a movie?"
"Detective Gumshoe," Prosecutor Edgeworth spoke through his teeth, low and controlled, "You're telling us that you not only based your arrest on a singular witness but also a piece of evidence that is more common in fiction than in real life?"
To his credit, the detective did seem to realize he was being chastised. He flinched and began fiddling with the lining of his jacket, averting his eyes away from the prosecutor's bench. "Well, I mean, uh...why else would she have written it? It's her blood, usin' her finger, on a piece of paper she had lyin' around in her office and all. Who else could've done it?"
"The killer perhaps?" Maya tried to keep her indignation from showing. It wasn't his fault he watched too many action-and-or-mystery films.
"Right, right, the autopsy report. That's a huge contradiction!" Phoenix almost lifted off the ground with excitement. Maya nodded and turned back to Detective Gumshoe.
"You say that Mia wrote my name down with her own blood to prove I was the killer, correct?" How to go about wording this. What would Mia say?
"Yeah. In movies, victims write their killer's names down all the time."
"That's clearly impossible!" It felt good to have an excuse to yell in court. It felt good to have an excuse to yell in general. "According to the autopsy report I was given, her recorded cause of death was: blunt force trauma, instentaneous." Detective Gumshoe stared at her, confused. Time to deliver the final blow. "There's no way that she could have written my name in her own blood if she died instantly!"
Phoenix whooped from next to her. "There we go! That's a wonderful contradiction you've found! That should throw the prosecution off their game."
And yet...Prosecutor Edgeworth seemed unbothered by her accusation. In fact, he seemed also amused. He chuckled and waggled his finger at Maya. "Aren't you getting ahead of yourself Miss Fey?"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"When did you get this autopsy report of yours?"
Why was he asking that? What did the time she got the report even matter? An autopsy report was an autopsy report! It was a record. You don't just change records!
"Yesterday, during my investigation." If he was surprised she was allowed to investigate despite being under arrest, he didn't show it.
Instead, he just laughed and clucked his tongue at her. "Now, now, Miss Fey. I'm afraid that information you have is out of date."
"What?" Maya looked over at Phoenix. He shrugged at her, as confused as she was.
"On my orders, the coroners inspected the victim again and we have more accurate information about her death. As it is: she did not die instantaneously. There is a possibility that she was alive for a few minutes after she was struck, giving her plenty of time to write down her killer's name for the authorities to find." Prosecutor Edgeworth produced the new autopsy report. A copy of it was handed to Maya.
She seethed as she stared at the new information, the paper crumpling in her grip.
Victim: Mia Fey (27, Female) Time of Death: 9/5 at 9:00PM Cause: Single blunt force trauma. May have lived for a few minutes after being hit.
May have lived for a few minutes after being hit. May have lived for a few minutes. Well wasn't that convenient.
"That's...underhanded." Phoenix frowned at Prosecutor Edgeworth. He seemed more bothered at his tactics than the actual fact of the matter. "It's not unheard of for an updated autopsy report to be requested, but usually it's with good reason. I don't know what reason Edgeworth might have had for requesting a re-examination but it's certainly put our one good point out to pasture. I guess we can only wait to tear into May, right?"
"Right..." Maya hissed through her teeth.
"Do you still believe you have a leg to stand on with regards to her dying message, Miss Fey, or do the facts no longer support your supposition?" Prosecutor Edgeworth smirked at her from across the courtroom. "Do we need to continue to bother the detective or shall we let him remove himself from the stand now that he's said his piece?"
"I don't think we should put poor Gumshoe through any more. He looks like he's going to cry." True to Phoenix's word, the detective was hunched over, his eyes shining as he looked at the floor. "Let's let this go for now."
"I hate him," Maya muttered. She took a deep breath and straightened up, then exhaled. "Your Honor, I am done with my cross-examination of this witness."
Prosecutor Edgeworth bowed to the judge and the gallery. "Thank you, Miss Fey. The prosecution will now call its second witness to the stand."
April May. Maya was not looking forward to seeing her again.
Detective Gumshoe left the stand and went to stand somewhere on the side of the prosecution while one of the bailiffs walked April May into the courtroom. The gallery erupted in noise. The judge banged his gavel in an attempt to wrangle everyone into silence.
"Order! Order!"
Maya glared daggers at April May, whose sweet perfume permeated the courtroom long before she did. The woman, however, paid Maya no mind and just leaned forward so her shirt showed off more of her cleavage while she winked at the judge.
"The witness will refrain from wanton winking." The judge scolded as he banged his gavel again, trying to quell the gallery. Maya suddenly had so much respect for the old man. He wasn't entertaining her nonsense.
"Witness, your name and occupation?" Prosecutor Edgeworth prompted.
April May pursed her lips, then spoke as if she had to dig deep to remember anything important. "April May. I'm a professional."
Phoenix grimaced. "A professional what? Liar? Seductress?"
"You claim to have witnessed the crime and can identify the killer, correct?" Like the judge, Prosecutor Edgeworth was not rising to her bait. Maya was less impressed by his stoicism. She would have paid money to see him trip ass over teakettle because April May decided she wanted to get her claws in him.
"Uh, yeah?" April May pressed a manicured finger to her lips as she thought. "I was in my hotel room at the time, but I saw everything. Obviously it was the defendant, right?"
"Hey!" Maya wanted to tear her a new one but Phoenix stopped her before she could continue.
"Don't. Wait for cross-examination. If we misstep you might be found in contempt of court and your defense will be thrown out." Maya took a deep breath at his insistence and straightened herself up. "Remember: we have the wiretap, we have the recording of your call with Mia. We can find a contradiction in her testimony easier than Gumshoe's because we know she's lying."
"What, am I wrong, little miss killer?" April May sneered at Maya, then went back to making doe-eyes at Prosecutor Edgeworth. "I'd recognize her anywhere! Even at the distance I was at. I could tell it was her as clear as day, Mister Prosecutor."
"Your testimony then, Miss May." For the first time since this trial started, Maya was glad that Prosecutor Edgeworth was curt. It meant that April May wasn't going to get away with much.
"Okay!" April May leaned forward again and began to speak. "So at nine pm that night I was looking out my hotel room window. The view is super pretty up there, you know? Across the street I saw one of the rooms was lit up and the silhouette of someone was in it. Two someones, really. There was this person with long hair being attacked by the defendant. The lady dodged to the right and tried to run but she couldn't escape. The little killer smacked her on the head and she slumped out of sight and never got again, I promise. That's when I called the cops, coz I'm such a good citizen and all..." She leaned over the witness stand and kicked her leg up, staring piteously up at the judge, who was unmoved by her brazen display.
"What a crock." Phoenix was immediately unhappy with April May's testimony, not that Maya was any happier. "Between her way of saying what she saw and her supposed luck in noticing something going down across the street, it's not as if we don't have a lot of places to pick apart. The important thing though...that's her description of you. When we were in her hotel room, how good of a view did she have of the office window?"
"Not a very good one," Maya muttered. "She shouldn't have been...able...to notice...details..." That was what was important.
"As you can see," Prosecutor Edgeworth was saying, a smug air about him, "airtight proof that the defendant is the one who assaulted the victim. The prosecution rests, Your Honor."
"Well," the judge mused, "That certainly is a rather decisive testimony, like the detective said."
"The prosecution did not want to waste the court's time, Your Honor. That is why we brought forward Miss April May so soon." What was Prosecutor Edgeworth even playing at? Did he expect her to just roll over?
"Well, let's start pushing."
Maya grinned at April May as she was handed a transcript of her testimony. "My cross-examination, Your Honor?"
"Is that truly necessary?" She glared at Prosecutor Edgeworth as he wagged a finger at her, almost scolding her. "I am well aware of your sister's...proclivity for dragging a case out long past its prime. Have you also learned that cowardly tactic?"
What was he on about?
"He's hoping to intimidate you into stepping back." Phoenix seemed upset by this. "I don't know why he had to bring Mia into it though."
Jokes on him. "It is my right, as the defense, to cross-examine every witness, right?"
"That's correct." The judge was on her side here.
"I am exercising that right and nothing the prosecution could say will dissuade me." Maya sneered at Prosecutor Edgeworth, all teeth and malice. "Unless he is worried I might uncover inconsistencies in Miss May's testimony?"
"By all means," Prosecutor Edgeworth bowed at her, his sarcasm obvious, "examine away Miss Fey."
"You may begin, defense."
Maya turned her ire to April May and immediately found the part of her testimony that felt the weakest. "April May, you said that you saw...Mia and myself in the office that night from your hotel room, right?"
"Yep." She popped the end of her word, idly examining her nails. If she was hoping the cold shoulder might make Maya back off, she was wrong.
"I visited your hotel room yesterday to see how good of a view you might have had. While you can see the office without issue, I do think you couldn't have been able to identify myself or Mia at that distance, let alone if we were backlit."
"Oh?" That got April May's attention. Her pupils narrowed and she bared her teeth at Maya. "Maybe you should get your eyes checked, little killer. I could see perfectly well. Your sister was this slender lady with long hair and you were short and kinda fat. Hard to miss."
Phoenix frowned. "Why did she choose your silhouette to pick on?"
"Was that all you noticed about my sister and I? Our height and build?" Maya had a vague idea what was bothering Phoenix but she wanted to make April May do all the heavy lifting.
"Aside from you fighting, isn't that all that matters? You're not memorable." Well that was a blatant lie.
Maya smirked. Got her. "I think you're wrong, April May. Any other person wouldn't have been focused on how short or fat I was. The first thing most people notice about me is my clothes." She stood in a way that showed the judge her traditional clothing.
"Your clothes are distinctive," the judge nodded at her. "Where are they from?"
"Why does it matter?" April May interjected. She was unhappy about losing control of the narrative but that didn't matter. Maya had already started chipping apart her cutesy persona.
"I'm from a small mountain village called Kurain. We're pretty traditional like this, though we've recently had more modern touches to our homes like phones and televisions."
"And how, pray tell, does any of this have to do with Miss May's testimony or its accuracy?" Prosecutor Edgeworth seemed somewhere between bored and irritated.
"If she can't be trusted with details, how can we be certain she saw everything clearly?!" Maya was riding the high of the judge's approval a little.
"I just didn't think that all those trifling little details even mattered!" April May pouted and batted her eyelashes at Prosecutor Edgeworth. He seemed unmoved. "I saw all of them, of course, but if you need them in my testimony I can put them back in, like how I saw the defendant kill her only sister with that clock."
"Oh!" Phoenix leaned forward across the bench. "Wait! Isn't it..." He walked to where the Thinker was being held and read the label. "Yeah! It's still marked as a statue! Maya, object to her statement. Use the transcript where Gumshoe added the evidence in."
The wiretap. Maya leaned forward and slammed her hands on the bench as hard as she could. "Objection!"
April May, Prosecutor Edgeworth, and the judge looked at her in confusion.
"April May, you said that the murder weapon was a clock, correct?" Maya shuffled through the pages of the transcript until she found the part she was looking for.
"Uh, yeah?" April May seemed unconcerned.
Maya smirked. "However, there's no way you should know that. The Thinker was submitted as a statue, not a clock."
April May hissed, not unlike an angry cat. "Wh-what do you mean?!"
"April May, there is no way you should logically know that this heavy object is a clock." Maya gestured to the evidence in its little bag. "So why did you?"
"Uh, um...I heard it, that's right!" She was grasping at straws. "It says the time when you turn its head, right?"
"True, if the clock wasn't hollow right now." Phoenix was grinning with Maya, his eyes focused on April May as if he was a predator watching his prey. "Keep going. You've got her."
"While it is a clock, I doubt you'd be able to hear it from where your hotel room is. Also, it's not as if the clock was working that night."
"Objection! How would you know it was a clock, Miss Fey?" Edgeworth leaned forward as he asked, clearly unhappy with how out of hand things had gotten. "You were in Kurain until the day of the murder, correct? That item was a gift given to the victim but a few days before she was killed."
"Now it's time for the phone call." Phoenix seemed unbothered by the pushback. "You can prove your knowledge and disprove May's claim at the same time."
"My sister called me the day of, remember? She asked me to take care of the clock, which she had emptied of its mechanical parts."
"Are we supposed to take you at your word?" Prosecutor Edgeworth sneered at her.
"I don't expect you to." Time to put him in his place. "That's why I have proof."
As Prosecutor Edgeworth staggered from the force of her words, the gallery erupted into noise. The judge banged his gavel. "Order! Order in the court! What do you mean by this, defense?"
"The police confiscated my phone when they placed me in the detention center. While they had it, they checked my call history as well as my messages. What they didn't check was my recorded calls." Maya pulled her phone out and quickly navigated the menus. "If the court would listen to this, I'm sure all will become clear."
The recording played, the courtroom silent as everyone listened to two sisters happily talk about seeing one another. Maya watched Prosecutor Edgeworth as it finally got to the point where Mia admitted to hollowing out the Thinker—a clock—and storing documents in it. He was grimacing, clutching at his arm as he listened.
April May, on the other hand, looked plain furious.
"As you can see, Your Honor," Maya put her phone down on the bench in plain sight, "while I knew the Thinker was a clock—and a broken one at that—April May should not have!"
"W-well it's not like this is a particularly special clock," April May tried to recover her position. "I've probably seen it before, in one of those novelty stores in the mall."
"That's a complete lie." Phoenix looked almost surprised by how brazen she was being. Maya didn't understand why though. "Larry made that. There's only two of them in existence and one is evidence for a prior murder case." Oh. Alright then.
"Objection!" She didn't have to do that but something about loudly objecting to what April May was saying felt good. "There is no way you could have seen this in a store, novelty or otherwise."
"What are you saying?" April May sneered at Maya. "Everything is in stores and if it's not, it's online. Just because you live in the mountains where you have to barter clothes for chickens—"
"You wouldn't be able to find this in a store because it's handmade, April May. There's only two of these in the entire world: this one and the one in an evidence locker in the precinct." That was where cops put evidence after cases were done with, right? Evidence lockers? If she was wrong, nobody was refuting her.
"What?!"
"Mia didn't tell me much about work but I do know that during the last case my sister took, a Thinker clock—the sibling to this one, in fact—was used in a similar fashion. It's not left police custody since, so to speak. You should have no way to know this is a clock!" Maya slammed her hands on the bench and gave April May a fierce smile.
The woman bared her teeth and clutched at the witness stand. "How—?"
"Objection!" Before she could get any further, Prosecutor Edgeworth interrupted her. He was trying to regain control of the trial. "Miss May could have easily been present at said trial, which is why she knew the murder weapon was a clock."
"Unlikely. Time to pull our other trump card, Maya." Phoenix turned his full attention to her, his blank eyes somehow sparkling. "Time to prove April May was tapping the office phone."
"Objection! From the very start of this trial, April May has been lying about a crucial detail and that is her knowledge of the crime. There is no way she could have the information she does—such as my relationship with the victim or the true nature of the murder weapon—without having heard it firsthand." April May had, in fact, said that Mia and Maya were sisters. That wasn't something that had been said in her presence before that moment.
"Just what are you suggesting?" It was going to feel so good, taking Prosecutor Edgeworth down a peg.
"I'm suggesting that April May was tapping the Fey & Co. Law Offices."
The judge quelled the gallery's surprise. "Order! Order! What are you saying, defense? I hope you have evidence to substantiate your accusation."
"I do." Maya pulled the wiretap from her sash and presented it to the judge. "As you can see here, Your Honor, this is a wiretapping device. I found this inside the dresser of April May's hotel room, alongside the screwdriver she used to retrieve it the night of the murder."
Again, the gallery exploded with surprise and shock. Again, the judge slammed down his gavel. "Order in the court! Are you saying you stole this from the witness' hotel room?"
"Bring up how loose the phone base was. Try and use Gumshoe to corroborate that." Phoenix looked as on-edge as Maya felt.
"When I was examining the crime scene, I noticed the base of the office phone was loose, as if someone had sloppily put it back together." April May glared daggers at Maya but she didn't care. "If you need to, you can confirm that with Detective Gumshoe."
Prosecutor Edgeworth was glaring at the detective, who seemed to be mumbling something to him. Then he turned to face the judge. "I have been informed that yes, the office phone seems to have been disassembled and yes, the defendant didn't touch anything at the crime scene so she could not have been the one to tamper with it." Ha ha.
"Having seen that, I figured that maybe someone tapped her phone. In the witness' hotel room, a screwdriver was poking out of the dresser drawer and that piqued my interest. That's where I found the wiretap."
"I was under the impression your investigation was under strict supervision as a probationary act." The judge frowned at her but Maya couldn't even pretend to feel bad for stealing evidence. "Am I wrong?"
"Take the penalty."
"I take full responsibility for my actions."
The judge shook his head at her. "Consider this your first ever penalty in court. It will not happen again, understood?"
"Of course, Your Honor." Maya gave him a half-bow, unwilling to show him how much she was grinning. She was so close to an actual result. She was so close to buying an extra day. Now all she had to do was drag April May's employer out of her.
"Good. Now, Miss May, did you wiretap the victim's phone?" The judge turned his stern gaze to April May.
The woman looked furious, like a snarling beast. Her nails dug into the witness stand, her pupils slits, and she was baring her teeth at Maya. When the judge asked her that, she took a breath and smoothed down her hair, pulling her fake cuteness around her once more. "Um...why does that matter?"
"'Why does that matter?' That's a felony!" Phoenix was taken aback at her attitude. "If she keeps this up, we can get her whole testimony thrown out."
"Because, Miss April May, wiretapping is a serious offense that you will be charged on when we are done with your testimony." Prosecutor Edgeworth's voice was tense and monotone. If Maya had to take a guess as to what was bothering him, she'd say it was how she had the upper hand now—even if she didn't have definitive proof to finger the real culprit. "Be honest."
"For once in your life," Maya muttered under her breath.
"I mean, the trial isn't even about that, is it? It's about murder and I know that little brat murdered her!" Riding the line between saccharine and cutting, April May glared daggers at Maya, who returned the favor. "What harm does a little tippity-tapping even do?"
"Aside from calling your entire testimony into question: implicating you as the true killer!" If Maya sounded a little smug, it's because she felt smug. They had her on the ropes and Maya had done almost all of the legwork. What a rush! "You had to have retrieved the wiretap between when Mia called me and when the office was locked down as a crime scene. That gives you plenty of time to have entered the office, killed my sister, removed the wiretap, left the office, and then called the police."
April May hissed and clutched at the witness stand, her fingernails gouging out lines in the wood. "You can't be serious?"
"Like a murder charge."
"I didn't kill her! I was in my hotel room!" She was cornered.
"Where's your proof then?" And that is when Maya got a little too cocky.
Something changed in April May's posture and she smiled oh-so-sweetly once more. "Coffee."
"Huh?"
"I had iced coffee at nine pm on the dot." She laughed, high-pitched and sugar-coated. "It was delivered by room service. The bellboy can prove I couldn't have left my room at the time of the murder."
Phoenix was shocked by her sudden change. "She has an alibi? Was that coffee ordered on purpose? It had to have been. I know I saw more than one name on the guest book when we were there but I can't remember if she had someone rooming with her."
"Shall we get the bellboy to corroborate her alibi?" Prosecutor Edgeworth asked the judge.
The judge nodded at him. "Fetch the bellboy of the Gatewater Hotel."
"As it stands, the prosecution already subpoenaed the bellboy when questioning the current witness revealed the existence of  her alibi." Prosecutor Edgeworth smiled at Maya, almost daring her to object. "He is in the prosecution's lounge as we speak, politely waiting his turn. Is this amicable to the defense?"
"Huh?" Maya didn't understand what he was asking.
"Do you really want to waste your time trying to prove Miss April May could be the true culprit by cross-examining the bellboy or are you willing to admit defeat and take my gracious offer?" His gracious offer of a manslaughter charge.
"Looks like May isn't the only one being catty right now." Phoenix laughed at his own joke. "But in all seriousness, take the chance. We might be able to prove her boss was there and that's more important."
"The defense believes that, in spite of what the prosecution might say, the wiretapping is relevant to the murder and, as I stated at the very beginning, I stand by my original goal of a full acquittal. I didn't kill Mia and the wiretapping proves I wasn't the only one who knew where she was going to be at the time of the murder." Trying to remember all the fancy lawyer words as she got emotional was hard but she was managing. Maybe when all this was done, she'd get her hands on a word-a-day calendar or something. Expand her vocabulary.
Prosecutor Edgeworth clicked his tongue in disappointment and wagged his finger at her. "If that's how you wish to proceed, so be it. The prosecution only has one request."
"And that is?" The judge asked.
"If the bellboy's testimony reveals nothing of value, then the trial will end and the defense will stop trying to drag things out."
Phoenix sighed. "I don't know why he's being so aggressive. This is just a murder case and he and Mia weren't even friends! He's taking this so personally."
"Deal." Maya didn't even hesitate. If Phoenix had seen someone's name with April May's in the guest book, then the coffee had to have been an intended alibi. She stared Prosecutor Edgeworth in the eyes, unwavering. His cold gaze seemed to slide right off of her.
"Then by all means, have at it." He bowed to her. She did her best to swallow her anger and simply rolled her eyes.
April May was arrested and led away while the bellboy was brought forward to the stand—still carrying a tray with tea on it, of all things. He looked pleased as punch to be standing on a witness stand for a murder trial.
Maya wasn't too fond of him on virtue of he'd already been rude to her, but his slight glory-chasing made her like him even less.
"Your name and occupation?" Prosecutor Edgeworth prompted.
"I am but a humble bellboy, sir." That wasn't the answer he wanted but that was the only answer he was going to get it seemed.
"You work at the Gatewater Hotel, do you not?"
Phoenix nodded in surprise. "Edgeworth is doing a great job leading his witness."
"Can't I object to that?" Maya hissed to him.
"Not any more you can't. Used to be able to though." Phoenix did not elaborate.
"I do, sir! Fourth generation bellboy! I say that this scandal will drive traffic up, up, up!" The bellboy laughed, a sound like the ringing of bells.
"I see...and the night of the murder, the fifth, Miss April May ordered room service?" Prosecutor Edgeworth didn't bother straying from his intended questions. Maya got the feeling that he wouldn't let her get away with as much faffing about as he did earlier. She'd have to be careful when cross-examining this one.
"Indeed I was." The bellboy blushed a bit. "I remember it well."
"Your testimony then."
The bellboy nodded and shifted the tray on his hand. "Of course, sir. That night, at nine pm on the dot, I delivered to Miss May room service. She answered the door, of course, and paid for her drinks, then I went on my way. That is all I saw."
"That's...hm." Phoenix stared at the bellboy. "His testimony is pretty nothing."
"Press?" Maya whispered.
"That sounds good."
"Defense?" The judge prompted.
"Thank you, Your Honor." Maya took the transcript from the stenographer and looked it over before she started her cross-examination. "You say she ordered room service at nine on the dot? Are all your room service requests so specific?"
"It depends, really. Miss May's was very punctual but sometimes we are asked for by name, so it's not an wholly unusual request." He seemed nonplussed by her asking this.
"Hm." Maya read some more, trying to find the weak link. "April May ordered drinks, plural?" That seemed odd. "She said she ordered an iced coffee."
"There were two drinks, yes ma'am." The bellboy was surprisingly forthcoming. "Eighteen dollar total, really. Plus tip." He blushed at that.
"That's an expensive coffee," Maya frowned. "But could she have drank two iced coffees before they both melted? Especially if she had called the police over a murder?"
"Are you asking the witness this?" Prosecutor Edgeworth looked bored. Maya wanted to throw her phone at his head.
"Oh, uh, no. Sorry. Just thinking aloud. Although...," she had touched on something interesting, "did you go back to get their dishes?"
"That was handed by housekeeping, ma'am. I simply tend to customers' needs as they arise." The bellboy shook his head, blushing lightly.
Wait. "You said April May gave you a tip?"
"Yes she did. It was quite shocking, considering, but she gave me an embrasser as payment for services rendered." The bellboy was beet red.
Maya blinked at him in confusion. "A what?"
"That is French for 'embrace', is it not?" Prosecutor Edgeworth supplied.
"Yes it is, sir. A kiss, as it were, sir. On the cheek, no less. I shan't forget it for years, I think. It was an exhilarating experience, considering." Oh, he was just flustered because she was attractive to him. Hm.
"What a cheap tip." Even Phoenix was unimpressed.
"As the defense can see: while Miss April May might be guilty of wiretapping, it has no bearing on this murder case and her alibi remains rock solid." Prosecutor Edgeworth looked dead at Maya as if he was daring her to keep fighting. "Shall we end this farce and get to the resolution so we can all get home?"
"Not yet!" Maya let all of her carefully crafted professionalism slip away in the wake of the terror she felt at the thought of failing after getting so far. "The - the defense would like to ask the current witness one more thing!"
"Just one more," the judge warned, "and if nothing comes of it, I will come to my conclusion. Are we clear?"
"Of course, Your Honor!" Maya furiously tore through her transcripts. "Thank you."
"Tick tock, Miss Fey." Prosecutor Edgeworth had never looked more smug or more punchable than in this moment. "Pick your question carefully."
"The check-in." Phoenix gasped. "I don't remember if she had someone with her but we can figure it out if we ask about the check-in. Edgeworth likes to keep his witness testimonies controlled. If we ask anything out of what he was told to talk about, we might get something."
Maya nodded. "Mister bellboy—"
"No need for the formality, ma'am."
"Witness, then." She didn't have time for his quibbles. "When did April May check in to the Gatewater?"
If Prosecutor Edgeworth had any concerns about the relevancy of her question, he didn't raise an objection. Instead, the bellboy gave it some thought before responding, "Well she checked in some time before the incident, ma'am. It's not as if she had only been staying for a day or anything like that. Still, I wouldn't forget her any time soon. She's my type, you see, and it was such a disappointment after all."
Wait. "What was a disappointment?" Please let this be what she thinks it is.
"She checked in with her lover, ma'am." It was. Maya was so excited she could almost cry but the trial wasn't over.
"Objection!" Now the demon prosecutor had a problem? Too late.
"Objection overruled." The judge was as interested as Maya was in what the bellboy meant. "This seems to be a pertinent line of questioning. Witness!"
"Ah, uh, yes sir." The bellboy flushed again. "Rather, uh, what is it?"
"Why didn't you mention that she was sharing the room before?" Maya was pretty sure she knew the answer.
"You didn't ask, ma'am." The bellboy gestured towards Prosecutor Edgeworth with the tray. "The gentleman over there instructed me to not offer information unless I was asked so..."
"And yet..." Prosecutor Edgeworth was sweating bullets. It was nice to see him put on blast.
"It's not technically illegal to coach your witnesses like that. It's just...scummy." Phoenix frowned again. "I suppose since I told you to do something similar in questioning, I've got no leg to stand on."
Maya was finally ready to claw her way to victory. "Witness, the man who checked in with April May, did you see him when you brought up the coffee?"
"Objection! How is that relevant?"
"Objection! April May has an alibi for the murder  but she was wiretapping Fey & Co. Law Offices so she had access to sensitive information such as when my sister would be alone, waiting to hand off evidence for an upcoming case to my care. Evidence, I'll point out, that is missing as of right now." That wasn't relevant at the moment but she needed to say it aloud so there was record of her acknowledging it for later. "However, the man who checked in with her had access to the same information through her. If her alibi stands and he doesn't have one, it stands to reason that he must be the killer!"
"Objection sustained. Witness?" The judge watched the bellboy intently.
"I, uh...I don't believe I saw him, Your Honor."
The court exploded with noise as the gallery roared. Maya leaned back, hands on her hips, and smirked at Prosecutor Edgeworth. The man was leaning against his bench, eyebrow twitching as he grimaced.
"Order in the court! Order now!" The judge banged his gavel a few times and the chatter died down. "So you are suggesting that Miss May's so-called 'lover' could be the true killer of this trial?"
"Yes, Your Honor."
"Do you truly think one wayward lover is enough to acquit you of sororicide?" Prosecutor Edgeworth tried to recover ground but Maya was ready.
"Let's not forget that you are the one who coached the witness to hide the existence of this man. The act of concealing him makes him suspicious enough, never mind April May's illicit activities that night." She stared him down, unwilling to let him try and undo all her hard work. "I hold fast to my belief that, if he is not the true killer, this mysterious man has some ties to the crime and we cannot continue without finding and serving him."
The judge banged his gavel. "The defense raises a good point. While we cannot prove that this man is anything more than a red herring, the evidence brought before the court indicates he must have some relevance. We will reconvene court the following day after law enforcement and the prosecution look into this man." And, just like that, she had done it.
One more day and the possibility of getting the true culprit in court so they could prove her innocence. Now all they had to do was track him down and force him into court.
Victory has never tasted so bittersweet.

"Someone write me an AU pls thank you"
Oh i will.
PLEASEEEE
Imagine an au where Chris/seb are professors/teachers at a school where they are co-workers. Well rivals actually.
Even though they are rivals in their worklife, they can never deny the tension between them. Seb won best teacher of the year, oh how Chris was angry. It was noon, the students were nowhere to be found only Mr. Stan and Mr. Evans. As Mr. Stan was placing his reward on his desk, Chris fiddled with his glasses as he came closer to Seb saying “You should really appreciate that trophy more, Stan”. Without even seeing Chris he already knew who it was, he would always recognize that deep voice “Oh i will, Evans”. Seb slowly turned around to a well serious face, eyebrows furrowed and lips slightly curved down. “mad that i won again?” Seb teased with a shit eating grin to Chris as he came closer
The rest is history
-pleading anon

@cable-knit-sweater Maya! Your wish has been granted 👀
And I am fucking here for this. Yes. Rivals. The 🤌🏻tension🤌🏻 The stepping in closer. The sass.
Chris looking right at Seb through those glasses as he snarks back, "I'm gonna show you who's the best."
"Oh, are you?" Sebastian's smirk only falters for a moment when he hits his desk. The collision and noise of his new trophy wobbling on the top of the desk, spooking him a little--he tries not to let it show.
"Yeah," Chris rumbles.
"Best at what?" Sebastian asks, eyes flicking down to his mouth, then back up to his eyes.
Chris raises an eyebrow over the rim of his glasses, "you'll just have to wait and see, won't you?"
And that's it.
He walks away.
Leaving Sebastian to realize, all on his own how his fingers have cramped down tightly to the edge of his desk and how his heart and breath is racing and how... there's no elegant way to say it... how hard he is.
Sebastian, at first, is adamant that whatever game they're playing he won't be the first to crumble.
But.
But--
Professor Evans seems to do everything he can to torture Sebastian. Biting is finger and stroking his beard during staff meetings, thinking deeper than he needs to about ever little decision. Upping his style and wearing tighter and tighter shirts, buttons nearly popping off, seams wailing for mercy, and donning slacks that're thin and super tight, etc., etc. He even starts to find Sebastian before their respective earliest lectures. Early in the morning when he's sipping coffee and his voice is still morning rough. Then. When faculty goes out together, he shows up in casual clothes, tight t-shirts, dark wash jeans, a pendant necklace, a baseball cap, and flashes of ink, It all drives Sebastian crazy. Until...
Sebastian breaks.
He storms into Evans personal, private office and demands, "show me?"
"Hm?"
"Show... me..." Sebastian forces himself to say it again.
"Show you what?" Chris murmurs, almost too quiet. But. He makes up for it stepping in close. Sebastian's back hits the wall gently. Chris keeps stepping forward. And now his hand is ghosting over his jaw, tilting his face up so they're staring into each other's eyes.
Sebastian swallows. "Show me what you're best at."
Chris smirks, "if you use your manners, then maybe we'll see if you can handle my best, hm?"
"Please, please show me."
"Of course, baby, all you had to do was ask."
Chris eventually ends up telling Sebastian he deserves the award over and over and over again along with a whole flood of other praise during sex and that makes Sebastian fucking MELT. He's never known he liked praise That Much.

Hurting~ Dacre Montgomery

Author's Note : There is no summary, I have been thinking about this all day. I'm going to use some Stranger Things actors in this
Angst
" I'm sorry I'm late" Maya sits down near Joe as she puts her phone in her bag. " I had drop off Y/N home from the hospital" concern faces looked over at Maya especially the one across from her.
"What happened? Is she alright?" Gaten asked.
" She has a few scratches here and there, broke her arm too but she's alright. She got into a car accident" Maya looks around the table and locks eyes with Dacre. He frowns. He used to be your emergency contact number but since the break up, you moved Maya as your emergency contact.
" She's doing okay" Maya reassured him seeing the way his eyebrows were knitted together and the distant look on his face. He nods to her.
Everyone started to order but Dacre kept wondering about you, he was worried even if was just a broken arm and minor scratches here and there.
It's been awhile since you saw Dacre, your break up with him wasn't messy but he told you that you deserved better than someone like him with no other explanation.
You were munching on some popcorn and watching a movie when a knock on your door came. You reached for the remote to pause the movie as you flipped on the lights heading to the door. You threw it opened surprised to see who was standing there.
" Can I come in?" the familiar australian accent filled your ears as you nodded. He stepped in brushing past you. It's when you closed the door and turn to look at him he saw the minor scratches. One on your chin. One of the cheek. One on the forehead and one hidden near your collarbone. He eyed the cast on your arm that had only one signature on it making him chuckle.
" How's the?" He motioned to the scratches around your face. You shrugged going to sit back down on your couch. Dacre joins you as he sits next to you.
" I bet I look really bad" you reached up to touch one of the scratches when a hand stops you.
" Don't touch them, you'll pick on them and then make it worse" he doesn't let go of your hand.
" But I look bad?" his eyes roam your face as he shakes his head.
" No"
There is silence between the two of you. He eyes the popcorn on the table in front of him and his eyes go to see what movie you were watching, he doesn't really know what it is as it's on pause but most times he knows you love to watch horror.
" Why are you here, Dacre?" your question brings him out of his head as he turns his head back to look at you. He sighs as he runs a hand down his face.
" I got worried about you when Maya said you got into a car accident. My heart fell into my stomach and I just wanted to call you right away just to hear the sound of your voice that you were okay"
" Why didn't you?" you asked. He bite his bottom lip as he shrugged.
" A part of me thought you hated me after everything that had happened between us and then apart of me tugged on my heart strings as I came to realize how much I care about you, I still do"
His thumb ran against your knuckles bringing your hand up to his lips. His eyes lock with yours as he does.
You tug your hand away from his grasp as you get up making your way into the kitchen. You turn the lights on and hear footsteps follow you as Dacre enters the kitchen behind you.
" You remodeled the kitchen" he looks around seeing everything different and different colors. You opened your fridge to get a bottle of water, nudging with your elbow to close it.
" I needed to change it, the color was boring me" you shrugged as you held the water bottle with your hand, trying to open it.
" Give it here" Dacre says, you hand it to him as he uncaps the water bottle for you handing it back to you while holding the cap in his hands. You take a couple of drinks of the water before he reaches out to cap it back on.
" Thank you" he nods.
" You look great" he says as his eyes roam your body. You were in a pair of jeans with just a white t-shirt, your hair was longer since the last time he saw you and your feet were covered in white socks.
" I look the same, Montgomery" he places a hand on his heart hearing you call him by his last name.
" L/N, you have wounded me" he stumbles back with a pout causing you to giggle. He was still the same dork as he used to be.
Your giggle was one of his favorite sounds.
" Why did you want to break it off with me?" you ask him leaning against the kitchen counter. The smile on his lips dropped as he look down at your kitchen floor finding it rather more fascinating than your face.
" You can't just keep hiding from this" you tell him making your way over to him. You stood close enough that the front of his feet could touch yours. The smell of sweetness and wood hit your nose. He always smelled so good and he always looked good.
" I told you" he mumbles refusing to look at you. He's afraid if he looks at you then he'll melt inside and you'd see right through him.
" I don't believe that's what you want. I don't deserve better, I deserve you. I wanted you. I want you"
" I can't give you what you want" he says bringing his eyes to meet yours. His eyes are glossy as he's trying to hold himself together. Your hand reaches out to cup his cheek and he leans into your touch, with a tear streaming down his cheek.
" Why not?"
" Because there is someone else" he says in a whisper. Those word slashed into your heart. Someone else caught his attention. They were going to have him and they were lucky.
" Oh" you mumble dropping your hand from his cheek as your own eyes become glossy. Dacre sniffles as he watches you move away from him. You turn your head to the side feeling stupid that you thought that you might have a chance with him, that there was still that spark.
" Y/N" he calls out your name but you shake your head.
" Please leave" you point towards the door not even glancing at him. You didn't want him to see the hurt in your eyes and the tears but he's already seen it and it breaks his own heart.
Dacre finds a sharpie on the counter, not really knowing why it's there but he does as he uncaps the caps and writes something on your cast. He's taking awhile to write. You hear his sniffles and you can see from the corner of your eye that his hands are shaking.
He caps the sharpie back on and throws it on the counter as he slips past you. He glances back at you once he reaches the door, fresh tears streaming down his cheeks.
Then he was gone.
You glance down at the words he's written and you feel your heart break in two.
" You deserve everything I couldn't be"

🍅 for Laxo, Maya and Eiya?
“How misunderstood is your OC? In-universe or irl”
Laxo- i think a misconception a lot of the fans have about laxo is that hes a “pure cinnamon roll too innocent for this world” without accounting for the fact that he has Seen and Been Through Horrors. some fans tend to infantilize him and view him as too weak for his own good, whether they realize theyre doing it or not. laxo is bashful and a nervous little guy, definitely, but that does not discount the fact that he has been through literal hell and back, and that makes him very strong. i dont want people to see him as a character that needs to be ‘saved’ by someone because he cant do it himself, i want people to see him as a character who still chooses to go on despite all the things that happened to him. he perseveres through so much and he deserves to take the credit for it, yknow? reducing him to “sweet pure baby boy that needs help with everything” kinda discounts everything brave and powerful he’s done.
Maya- i think people tend to view maya as the fighter in her and kenta’s relationship, and i completely understand why they’d think that. maya is definitely the angry type and doesn’t like to take shit. but a big part of her character is that she’s actually a huge coward, and she constantly runs from her problems and hopes they don’t catch up to her. when she first appears she is definitely not the best version of herself, and throughout the story she will improve and be better about committing to things and not running. she’s all bark and no bite is what i’m saying hfhdhf
Eiya- eiya and kane’s relationship is actually a lot more complicated than people may initially think. she’s not just the “scorned, jealous sibling” trope. in reality she genuinely loves kane like a sibling, but also decides to project her resentment for things that are out of her control onto him. ever since she was young, they subconsciously blamed kane for being the reason why her parents neglected her. when in reality, they neglected her even before he was born. she just needed a scapegoat for her emotional turmoil, and kane was the easiest target. that’s why her emotions are so complicated and messy, and it leads her to do not so great things in order to get the attention she desperately wants, while resenting kane in turn.

Ok I’ll bite. Why don’t you like Bilal’s pairing with Maya? I’m not crazy about it, either, but amongst the men in the industry, he’s def not the worst. I prefer Bilal and Maya as opposed to sherry and Maya because I genuinely don’t think sherry liked her and used her for her fame. Bilal on the other hand, while he’s not the most talented of stars, seems like he’s pretty into her and she seems happy with him.
Yunhi made me like the pair a little more, too. Note: just a little.
My dream pairing in real life would be maya and OKB but khair I let go of that dream around 2016.
see, I really do not care who Maya is with offscreen. it's just that her offscreen relationships ALWAYS reflect her onscreen work. all my best wishes to Maya if Bilal has made her happy irl. that's what she deserves. she deserves a loving partner, everyone does! but you said it yourself - her chemistry with Bilal is NOT the best. i have SEEN Maya create intense magic (onscreen) with men for years. OsMaya might be her longest lasting pairing but from the start..from Faizan Khwaja to now Talha Chahour..Maya has created literal SPARKS when paired romantically with any man. with Bilal it's obvious that the chemistry is NOT as natural and as magical as the ones she has had with other men. yea the chemistry is THERE but that's cuz she's capable of creating chemistry with a tree if she has to. but that doesn't mean we HAVE to watch her be with a tree! *I* want her working with actors that bring with them a certain level of talent and intensity that compliments the fire that SHE is capable of creating. and i am NOT getting it. and i WILL not get it cuz hey..Maya just HAS to make her onscreen work revolve around her offscreen life.
Maya and Sherry..I don't want to get into the conspiracy theories around them (and there are a lot). whatever it was between them offscreen..can anyone deny that IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA the two did not make a truly spectacular looking couple?? the entire course of PHL promotions..yeah whatever was their ending but bruh they SERVED. their body language was so in tune with each other. the intimacy was clear. even if Sherry "used" her there's no denying that he was proper into her for that time being. it was just a case of two stunning people having a short lived affair that they didn't try to hide from anyone. me as an audience who wants to be entertained was ENTERTAINED. and i am NO LONGER ENTERTAINED. so i have all the right to complain.
I want Maya to branch out and do a variety of work with a bunch of different people! idk why i am misunderstood to be someone who only wants Maya to work with 1-2 people. NO! I want her to have a proper project with someone like Bilal Abbas and Ahad Raza Mir and want to see her more with Wahaj after their brilliance that we got TOO LITTLE OF in JBG; she deserves to explore her chemistry more with Talha, I want her to manage the miracle and work with Fawad Khan! I want her with Hamza again! I want her with Ahmed Ali Akbar too! oh god imagine her with Farhan Saeed!! i want her to be directed by Mehreen again! I want her to make efforts to collaborate with Haissam AGAIN. i want her to make the connections and be in a Kashif Nisar drama. I want her doing bigger and more mainstream projects. I want her to do a Ramazan play! something that gets the numbers and ratings so she can remind the awaam that she used to be their darling once upon a time. I WANT HER TO DO ALL THAT! I WANT HER TO DO MORE THAN WHAT SHE DOES! AND SHE WON'T! SHE CAN'T! BECAUSE SHE'S STUCK WITH THIS *ONE* PERSON WITH WHOM HER ONSCREEN WORK IS *NOT* THE BEST!!! we all know after Yunhi she's gonna do the film with lo..who else but BA! and directed by who else but M.Ehteshammudin! AND THAT WILL AGAIN TAKE MONTHS OR YEARS. WHAT AM I EVEN GETTING FROM HER!??!?
I repeat..IT IS NOT ABOUT WHO SHE'S WITH IN REAL LIFE! I DON'T FUCK WITH REAL PERSON SHIPPING. I AM FOREMOST AN AUDIENCE CRAVING FOR ENTERTAINMENT. I AM A FAN WHO PRIORITIZES SEEING HER FAV DO DIVERSE KIND OF WORK! I AM A STAN WHO WANTS TO WITNESS HER FAV BE PRAISED FOR THE *WORK* SHE DOES BECAUSE I KNOW SHE'S CAPABLE OF THAT. AND INSTEAD I GET TO WATCH HER WASTE HER ALREADY LIMITED TIME USING HER PLATFORM AND HER CONNECTIONS AND FAME AND HER STATURE IN THE INDUSTRY THAT SHE HAS WORKED SO DAMN HARD FOR TO PROMOTE HER WHOEVER-HER-CURRENT-BEAU-IS WHATEVER SHE CHANCE SHE GETS. AND I CAN'T EVEN COMPLAIN ABOUT IT!? be fr!!!
god..it's really not about any shipping war. it's simply just how she SHRINKS herself to fit herself with just one person. i know i KNOW that's who she has always been. past ceases to matter to her in the present. she's a heartbreaker like that i know. but good god..just the very thought that it's someone as utterly boring and talentless as Topi that's her last stop breaks my heart and infuriates me in a million ways. and TRY as i may i cannot make my peace with.
bottom line : i WANT to be crazy about a Maya pairing again. that AIN'T EVER HAPPENING WITH TOPI. the only way of that happening her is to detach herself. which knowing her is impossible. AND WOW I AM MAD AGAIN.

❀ Harry x Reader | Smut 18+ ONLY
❀ Warning: strong language, drinking, unprotected sex, FWB, exhibitionism (I guess?)
❀ Word Count: 1.9k
Tumblr media
It had been one too many nights that they spent without each other, so this trip had been more than necessary.
You were up to your neck in paperwork, but you didn’t care. As far as you were concerned each sheet of porcelain A4 paper was just a figment of your imagination. Well, at least till you got back home the following Tuesday.
You were jetting off to a much-deserved Spanish getaway with a few of your friends. The next couple of days were set to be filled with sun, sand, sea and sangria’s.... and hopefully mind-blowing sex. Unbeknownst to the rest of your friends you had sparked up a friend with benefits relationship with one of your closest friends Harry. Many drunken nights out turned into you jumping his bones after just barely making it through the door of his apartment. And so, it had been for the past couple months until recently when he had been given a job offer at a company in Manchester and moved 3 hours away from you in London. Playing with yourselves over facetime with each other kind of helped to fill the void, but nothing could compare to the real thing. Your suitcase couldn’t have been packed any faster.
Stepping out of the airport, the warm Spanish evening air greeted you and you couldn’t be happier. Your friend Maya had texted you that they were all already at the villa pre-drinking and getting ready for tonight's festivities. You wondered if Harry’s flight landed already but then remembered how difficult it would be to conceal your complex relationship when sharing a 4-bedroom villa with your friends. You pulled up in front of the red-bricked jaunty abode for the weekend. It was modestly walled, charming and roomy and overlooked the crisp blue waters.
Inside the house there were much more than just your group of friends present and you wondered who all these extra tipsy people were and what on earth would the owners of the property think of this arrangement, but you quickly pushed the thought out of your mind. This weekend was the time for you to let go of all your inhibitions and with that you wasted no time in greeting everyone and making yourself a drink.
A couple drinks in and you were already tipsy. You could see Harry from across the room chatting with a guy that you couldn’t remember the name of. Adorned with black slacks and a white graphic tee you couldn’t help but stare. His forehead was coated with a thin layer of sweat that made his front curls stick to it slightly. The moistness in your panties grew as you watched his lips move as he spoke, the side of his lips curving into a smirk as someone said something funny. The whole group erupted in laughter but all you could think about was the hardening of your nipples and what Harry thought of the strappy black figure-hugging dress you just changed into for the night.
You somewhat got your answer when he suddenly looked directly over to you and slowly tucked his lip between his teeth to bite it. This was the first time he acknowledged you all night. You weren’t purposely ignoring each other but when you arrived, he was nowhere to be seen. Then afterward you went off into your room for the next hour to shower and get ready for the night. When you made your appearance again, he had been busy chatting the night away, but now his eyes were locked on you like an animal after their prey.
You flirtatiously chuckled, then looked down taking a sudden interest in your color-block stiletto heels, his gaze becoming too much for you.  People slowly started to trickle out, presumably off to a club for the night and it was just your group of friends and a couple extra people left back. Harry decided to propose a toast.
“To sun, sand, sea, and sangria’s!” he cheered as you all clinked your glasses together.
“Where are we off to first?” one of your friends asked turning to Maya who you guessed was your drunken trip coordinator for the weekend.
“There’s this night beach party going on that everyone’s raving about!” Maya said excitedly.
“Okay great how about us 4 catch a taxi together and you and Harry can catch another one?” one of your friends suggested while looking at you and Harry. A smile crept up on your lips.
“...perfect” Harry replied.
Not even a minute had passed since your friends took off in their taxi before Harry hungrily attached his lips to yours. You had 2 minutes until your taxi arrived and you thought about just cancelling it and fucking him all night if only your friends wouldn’t be worried as to your whereabouts.
Grabbing a hold of your face tightly your tongues wrestled as you continued to kiss. Harry began to slightly hike you up while desperately grabbing at the hem of your dress. By the time the car pulled up you were leaned against the railing of the steps with one leg hoisted at Harry’s side, your tongue down his throat and your makeup smudged all over his face.
You drunkenly giggled as you danced down the front steps and into the cab, Harry quick on your tail. Once the door was shut inside the car was dark and the divider made it hard for you to hear the driver and for him to hear you.
“Keep your eyes on the road,” was all Harry said to the driver before pushing you down to lay across the backseat as he desperately clambered on top of you. You held in a scream as you slightly hit your head on the handle of the door but that didn’t deter you from reaching to undo the buttons on his slacks. Slight chaos ensued as he fought to get your panties down, eventually just ripping the flimsy material. Pushing your dress up to your belly button he began his assault of kisses on your lower abdomen and legs, your wetness growing as he grew closer and closer to your core.
“Please I need to feel you,” you begged wanting nothing more than to feel him deep inside of you, but he had other plans.
It took everything within you not to cry out as he finally attached his mouth to your heat. Slightly puckering his lips, he sucked at the sensitive bud between your folds. You two were too drunk and too desperate for each other to even pay attention to whether or not anyone was looking at you. His warm tongue flicked at your clit, and you reached down, attaching your hand to his hair, and tugging at his soft brown locks. A deep groan erupted from his core sending shock waves down your spine as you fought for dear life to remain as quiet and nonchalant as possible.
Taking a quick break, he stroked his digits all throughout your folds and you bit down on your lip. A finger entered you as you grabbed a hold of your breasts, massaging them erotically as you felt yourself starting to come undone. Harry once again started licking and sucking at your clit as his middle finger quickened its pace inside of you. You began to writhe around under him, the sensation becoming a lot as your release crept up on you. He entered another finger, and a moan escaped your lips when he started ramming his digits inside of you. As your orgasm approached, you could hear the thumping bass of the music outside, alerting you both to the fact that you were approaching your stop. You both quickly stopped.
Stumbling out of the car, Harry turned back and slid the driver a hefty tip before he drove off. You both ducked into an alley nearby before anyone saw you arrive, and Harry continued his assault of kisses. But this time you were in control. The alley was dark, and nobody was around so you quickly fell to your knees. Finally undoing his slacks, you plunged your hand into his pants gently stroking his stiff member with your manicured hands. Slowly lowering his underwear, his member sprang out and you continued to stroke it with a hastened pace.
Harry let out a groan when you sucked one of his balls into your mouth as your hand continued you pump him. His hand dived into your hair when you finally attached your lips to his tip, sucking the pre-cum that trickled out. Slowly, you began to take more and more of him into your mouth, bobbing your head as you massaged his balls.
Taking a breath, you began to pump him again, a line of spit and precum connecting your mouth to his tip.
“Baby, I need to feel you, I need to be deep inside you,” he puled, taking deep breaths.
He stood you up and tuned the two of you around so that your back was now against the wall. You jumped up on him, wrapping your legs around his waist as he began to tease your clit with the tip of his member. He slowly entered with a low groan, and you wrapped your arm around his neck throwing your head back with a moan.
“You feel so fucking good, damn I missed this,” he mumbled as he guided your hips, fucking you deep. The sloshing sound of your wetness, your moans, and the faint sound of music from the beach was all you both could hear. You rolled your hips against his, taking in the feeling of him filling you up entirely.
“Fuck me baby, you feel so good,” you mewled, leaning forward to kiss him deeply.
Harry pressed his head against yours as he looked at you deep in the eyes. He took slow long draws in and out of your slopping wet cunt, hitting that spot that had you ready to erupt for him.
“Oh my god,” you cried as you felt both your legs begin to tremble around him.
“Mmm, are you gonna come for me love? come for me baby,” he coaxed. You laid the side of your head against the side of his head as he repeatedly stroked deeply into you, feeling himself about to tip over the edge also. He slipped a hand down to quickly rub your clit as you went over.
You cried out and erupted into a fit of shakes, your orgasm violently washing over your entire body. You felt Harry twitch inside of you as he painted your walls with thick layers of cum. A hiccupped groan leaving his lips as he came. You both were dangerously out of breath. You slowly slid down him, one heel slipping off your foot as you landed with the other one. You laughed as you tried to catch your breath, realizing just how much you had sobered up since you left the house in a horny haste.
Looking at your phone you realized that it was 12:20 am, meaning the group last saw you about 30 minutes ago so you figured you should head over to the beach before they got worried. You both began to redress as best as you could in the dark, reaching down you realized something was missing.
“Harry, where are my panties?”
“Shit! I think I left them in the taxi.”

Decided to take the plunge and make an attempt at writing something for @hilacopter 's franzhifter au because franmaya lives in my head rent free. They're both just in there, constantly, drinking my Pepsi and calling me a bitch. Send help.
This was a rare moment of peace after a hectic trial, and if Nick and Edgey are just gonna hang around and dance around their painfully obvious feelings for each other, not smooching, then Maya has better things to do. Well, not really better. Is getting a snack better? Funyuns are pretty worth it, she thinks. One uneventful trip to the glorious courthouse vending machines later and things were good. She's got snacks on snacks now, baby. After all that she's been through lately, she thinks she deserves a little treat. Or maybe a lotta treats.
A peaceful snack break does occasionally beget a slightly less peaceful one, however, as Maya can't help but hear the sound of muffled sobs coming from... Well, it can't be far.
Maya glances around the room, scanning for the source of the sound. She sits up on her knees and leans down and over to look under the bench she's sitting on. And there she finds the source of the noise.
"Prosecutie- I-I mean, Franziska?! You... Uh... You okay?" She asks, genuinely concerned. Franziska von Karma sits, curled up and hiding from the world, three inches tall and under a bench in the courthouse. She wipes her eye on her sleeve and turns away from Maya's piercing gaze.
"I'm... I'm fine, Ms. Fey," Franziska sniffles. "Just... Please leave me alone, I'm almost done with emotion and I don't need fools like you ruining my process."
"Done with... Emotion...? Is... Is that how it works?"
"What a foolish question. Of course it is! I feel an emotion, I hide and force it back, push it out until it's gone. Until I'm done with it. Then I get to go back to trying to actually live my life until this horrible curse comes back to ruin everything yet again." Franziska punches the wall and tries to dry her eyes.
"Hmm... Curse, huh?" Maya lets herself fall onto the floor to talk to Franziska more comfortably, making a little oof noise as she does. "I don't know about that. I mean, can it really be a curse when it makes you literally the cutest thing in like the entire world or any world like so so so so so cute-"
"Ms. Fey, please. I am in no mood for your... Antics."
"Antics?!" Maya sighs. "Fiiiiine, no antics. Maybe a shenanigan or two, I might engage in a bit of mischief, but no antics. I promise."
Franziska scoffs and rolls her eyes. She just wants to be left alone. Then again... Maya's foolish, annoying presence has calmed her down, at least slightly. If nothing else, it's served as a valuable distraction from her feeling. She looks at Maya, squinting a little, as she's handed a cookie. It's a small one, one of those one to two-biters for a normal sized person, but to Franziska here in her shrunken state, it's about half as tall as she is. She can barely hold it in her lap.
"What, exactly, do you expect me to do with this?"
"...it's a snack, Franziska. You eat it. Sweets always help me feel better! You don't have to eat the whole thing, I know it's kind of a lot for someone so small and tiny and cute-"
"Ms. Fey."
"-and little and adorable and-"
"Ms. Fey! That's quite enough. But... Thank you." Franziska lifts the cookie up to her mouth, attempting to take a bite. It's cumbersome and difficult, but she manages to bite off a chunk right as Maya snaps a picture. And another. And another. Franziska jumps to her feet, tossing the cookie aside and charges at her, fuming.
"Ooh, that got you out. Wanna see?" Maya turns her phone to show Franziska a picture of herself, mouth full of the massive cookie she's holding, her eyes filled with rage. This is the exact moment she realized she was being photographed.
"You are going to erase those immediately. No one can know about my... Weakness! If you don't, I... I'll... Have you... Arrested! I'm sure I can find another murder to pin on you-"
"Relax, these are just for me. And you, if you want. Maybe I'll show 'em to Nick and Edgey. Does anyone else know you can do this? Does Gumshoe? He'd get a kick out of these I think."
"Don't you dare. I suppose I can live with you keeping them for personal use, if you must. I fail to see how any of this is helping me grow back to normal."
"Well, you stopped crying, right? That's a good start."
"Yes, and now I'm angry. Huge improvement."
"I mean, to be fair, you're kind of... Always a little angry."
"I am not!" Franziska stomps her foot and whips Maya's leg. It doesn't hurt too bad, though, it just feels kind of like smacking a rubber band against it. She laughs.
"Alright, let's try something else." Maya places her hand down flat, palm-up in front of Franziska.
"...What are you doing?"
"I'm trying to pick you up. Go ahead, step on. I'll be gentle."
"Pick me... Y-you're not just... Grabbing me, or..."
"Um, of course not? That would just be mean, especially when your emotions are already all... Y'know, like, all over the place."
"They are not 'all over the place'." Franziska scoffs as she sits down in Maya's palm. Maya lifts her up as she also stands and sits back down up on the bench, getting in a much more comfortable position. She cups Franziska against her chest, gently stroking her hair. Franziska wants to yell at her, berate her for this inappropriate display, but... She's speechless. She has no words for what she's feeling right now. Her face is redder than it's probably ever been, and she's feeling very awkward, but also... It's pleasant. Calming, almost. This may be the most comfortable she's ever felt at this size. She closes her eyes, burying her face into the fabric of her robe. She can feel Maya's gentle breath and heartbeat, establishing a calming rhythm. The feeling of being protected in her gentle hands, her thumb softly rubbing all along her back, up, and down, and up, and down. Pure bliss. A kind of love she's never felt before, a kind she wasn't even sure actually existed.
She almost doesn't notice that she's returned to normal size. Or maybe she does, but she just wants to pretend, to stay just like this a little bit longer.

Maya was rereading Eros' survey for the second time this evening. It was sent to her in paper form yesterday along with a bouquet of flowers and had been sitting on her desk since. There wasn’t much to it. All it asked was about how the date went and whether she wanted to continue seeing her 'perfect match'. She was pleasantly surprised that they were following up with her. Most dating sites she knew of never had this sort of thing; quite frankly, she could've gone out with an arms dealer and they still wouldn’t care.
Not that this applied to her date last night - it was wonderful. Maya had gone on dates before and while some had been okay, there had been times where she'd had to call in Damien or Nadia for a rescue. Not this time. She and Hayden had enjoyed a nice dinner at one of the fanciest restaurants in the city, ditched that date to explore town, then finished the evening with a nice boat ride at a river.
There was nothing wrong she had to say about it. Hayden was attractive, had treated her just right and they had so much in common. But that was it.
The connection Maya had hoped to feel between them, the spark - she wasn’t feeling it. Throughout the night, they'd talked, laughed and bonded over mutual interests like friends would. The answer was obvious, yet now she sat in front of Eros's follow-up survey hesitating to fill it out.
If what Nadia said was true, then once Eros set their clients up with someone, that was it. There were no refunds or retries. It wouldn’t be a huge loss to Maya, as she had only tried this out on Nadia's insistence. But she still felt bad for Hayden since he'd likely signed up for Eros with expectations. If it didn’t work out because of her, it didn’t seem fair that they weren't going to at least try to set him up with someone else. But then again, dating him when she didn’t feel anything for him wasn’t fair either.
Maya hovered her pen over the option she was choosing, then stood up abruptly. As much as it would make things easier to fill this out and move on, Hayden had been a complete gentleman last night. If this wasn’t meant to be, he deserved to find out in a better way. She pulled out her phone from her purse and called his number, biting her lip in anticipation.
"Hello?"
"Hello Hayden? It's Maya."
"Hey Maya! Great to hear from you again! How's it going?"
"Well it's been a pretty good day today. I just got back from work."
"Cool! So what's up?"
She sighed. This was it. "So, um . . . I got a survey from Eros about how our date went and before filling it out, I wanted to talk to you first."
She heard him shift on the other line before he answered. "Ohh I think I see where this is going."
"I really had a good time with you last night, Hayden." Maya said gently. "You're smart, funny and just in general seem like a really good person." She spoke carefully, hoping that she wasn’t going to hurt his feelings. "But I don't think it's going to work out between us, romantically I mean."
There was a brief pause. "I understand," He replied. "And I really appreciate you taking the time to tell me. Thanks, Maya."
Maya smiled, relieved that he was taking it so well. Then again, it had just been one date. "I thought it was the least I could do after how nice you were. The date you planned was amazing and you should definitely keep that up for anyone else you go out with."
"Good to know!" He chuckled. "I'll keep that in mind."
"And if you're up to it, I'd love to keep hanging out with you again as friends." She paused for a second. "Unless you don't want to, which I'd understand."
"That's actually not a bad idea. Eros wasn’t lying about our personality match. We have a lot in common and we got along pretty well. I’d still like to get to know you more, even just as friends."
"I agree," Maya said. "Compatibility doesn’t always have to be about romance."
"Of course!"
"Thanks a lot Hayden. So I guess I'll see you around?"
"You bet."
They continued in light-hearted conversation for a little longer until it was finally time to say good night. Once she hung up, Maya let out a relieved sigh. Now that Hayden had been able to hear it from her rather than having to find out from Eros, she felt a lot better. He deserved that much after being so nice to her.
"That went a lot better than I expected," she said to herself as she put her sealed response in the mail. "What was I even so worried about?" Although the date hadn't ended in 'true love', she had found a new friend, which wasn’t so bad. Tomorrow, she was to meet Damien, Nadia and Steve for brunch and they would no doubt be curious to know what had happened.
Nadia had taken the time to give her a fantastic referral when she'd contacted Eros for Maya's consultation. Hopefully she wouldn’t be too disappointed.
Damien on the other hand . . .
Maya grinned, already imagining him gloating with one of his infamous 'I told you so' quips. But there was a reason they were best friends. However cynical he was, he always came through for her and Nadia in the end
"A vague, secretive company providing little to no contact information . . . what could go wrong?" Even as he'd said it, she'd seen the concern in his eyes. In his own way, Damien had meant well. He always did. "You of all people don't need some fancy matchmaking service."
Maya was beaming as she walked back into her apartment and flopped into bed. He was right. She didn’t need some matchmaking service to find love. It would happen on its own. For all she knew, she was probably closer to finding it than she thought.

Your thoughts on the first episode of the new season? And can we talk about all those parallels? Also I'm loving the summer vibes!
I'm LIVING for the summer vibes! Doesn't everything feel like a breath of fresh air? I definitely feel like new life has been injected into the series. And that new location is so beautiful, I LOVE IT.
As for the episode, I thought it was masterfully done. You could tell Ayse was back and bringing the perfect mix of comedy, romance and drama. And the sparkle! The show sparkles again. The almost two and half hours flew buy, I was on the edge of my seat, and the performances from Hande and Kerem were amazing. Plus I just adore every moment between Serkan and his new nemesis (aka his secret daughter).
On the sober side, I don't care how jerky Serkan got while battling cancer, or how he may have pushed her away, nothing they've shown us so far even begins to justify Eda not telling him about Kiraz, and it certainly doesn't justify her continuing to lie when he's standing right in front of her making overtures (and her daughter is clearly longing for her father). Obviously, there are still many things we don't know and I'm sure there are many flashbacks to come, and Eda has been though so much, but still...I don't see how they will thread that needle and have Eda come out unscathed.
That being said, with this first episode they executed this story so well and it really does give new life to the series, so I won't dwell on the fact that Eda never would have done this. Never. We just have to move past it, accept that it's a soap opera plot device designed to give us an amazing second season packed with all sorts of amazing scenes and just enjoy every minute while it lasts.
(More under the cut)
I'll get to more on Edser later, as for everyone else... silliness abounds.
First... Erdem cheated on Leyla? WHAT!?!?! With whom? But I guess that was a clean way to explain Leyla leaving.
Engin and Piril, I love that Engin is staying home with their son, and that young actor is a cutie! As for Piril... GRRRRRR... she is still on my shitlist. Last time it was for betraying Eda (and Serkan) by enabling Selin's reign of terror, this time it's by betraying her friend and business partner Serkan! Good grief. If Piril just found out recently at the start of this project I could accept on her holding off because it's not her secret to run off and tell, but what I can't accept is her actively working against Serkan finding out. Even if in this episode she had gently said to Eda... "do you think maybe it's time you told him?" it would be a lot easier to swallow... but nope! She's acting like it would be the end of the world if Serkan found out. I sincerely hope that when everyone finds out and Engin finds out Piril knew, it causes problems between them. She deserves that.
She remains my second least favorite character. Who was my least favorite character this episode? Oh you know! Awful Ayfer is back! We got a reprieve from her in the last arc, but she's back to her annoying, controlling, Serkan-hating ways. Eda is a mother, an international award-winning landscape architect and business owner and she still has to lie to Ayfer because she's such a pain-in-the-ass? Watching her is going to be a trial.
Even though it feels like both Aydan and Ayfer were reset to zero character development, and Aydan has done worse (keeping the fact that Serkan was alive from Eda) I still find her a much easier character to take. Probably because Neslihan is a much better comedic actress, so she's a lot more entertaining. But... Aydan's been with Kemal for 5 years and hasn't told Serkan? WHY? I can't believe Kemal didn't give her an ultimatum years ago. I was loving, however, Serkan being in the way for both Aydan/Kemal and Engin/Piril. GOOD. Those people caused problems for him at one point or another or were in the way, it was nice to see him return the favor. I like Kemal and am still hoping they'll do a parallel "not knowing your father thing" and reveal he's Serkan's bio dad while Serkan is finding out he had a child he never knew about.
Melo and Seyfi were their awesome supportive, funny selves. It was great to see both of them, I'm so glad they stayed.
As for the new characters, love the kids. The new hotel manager is apparently ditzy and starstruck over Serkan, and I don't really understand how she's going to be integrated into the cast, but I love that she was used as a device to show us that Serkan has zero interest in any woman who is not Eda Yildiz. Eda's assistant seems like he'll be a fine side character. As for Burak, he seems harmless, obviously he has feeling for Eda that she does not reciprocate (fuck off Ayfer trying to push her on him) but hopefully they don't make him a psycho like Deniz. I did think he was a bit out of line to Serkan. Isn't that his cafe? And a customer has his glass spilled by a child in his care, and he insults him instead of apologizing? That is the worst customer service I've ever seen! He's a character that could wear on me quickly, we shall see. Kiraz can't help but be sassy because of genetics, but some of the adults in her life seem to be modeling rude behavior!
Now on to Eda and Serkan, I can't say enough about Hande and Kerem's acting in this episode. Phenomenal! They were both brilliant. Plus both are doing a great job working off of Maya (especially Kerem) those scenes were priceless. I don't often enjoy kids on shows, but so far I'm loving this dynamic.
As for Edser, while we don't know everything yet it feels like Serkan got to a point where he couldn't stand to see Eda in pain and putting her life on hold, he outright mentioned that she might not have graduated if they'd stayed together, and so that was part of the reason he reverted to his robot self and pushed her away. I'm going to guess she tried and tried and he was just unyielding. Saying he didn't want to get married or have kids in the harshest way possible. Perhaps even she went to tell him that she was pregnant and he went off on not wanting kids before she could even tell him. Time will tell.
At this juncture, my best guess is Eda's fear is rooted in rejection. It can't be that she thinks Serkan is a terrible person that doesn't deserve to know his child, or would be detrimental to Kiraz. However, she knows what it feels like to be rejected by Serkan, I'm sure she was beyond devastated, so I'm guessing now she's bent on protecting her daughter from feeling that same rejection. She fears if he found out, but wanted nothing to do with her, it would feel worse than him not knowing. She's not thinking clearly and perhaps it hasn't even occurred to her that the man she fell in love with is still under there and that man is fully capable of opening his heart wide to their child.
The fact that this child, a stranger to him, already has him wrapped around her little finger to the tune of being late to meetings while he waits for her to pick berries, speaks volumes.
The lies that Eda is telling Kiraz though... there is a fairy tale poetry to Eda saying her father is among the stars... but there was no way this would ever end well. Such a bad idea. Eda.... has made mistakes.
As for Eda and Serkan, their reunion was so bitter sweet. The way Serkan was sure he was hallucinating her and couldn't believe she was real, speaks to the fact that his thinking he saw her that morning was not an anomaly. It must happen all the time. She's never left his thoughts in 5 years. Especially since Engin makes it clear that women throw themselves at Serkan all the time, and he never bites. That's a lot of years celebrate, pining after a love he lost through his own actions. Though it's not that surprising that he didn't pursue other women, as he's never been a character who was motivated by sex. Which makes it hilarious that during his presentation that's where his mind was at, remembering their intimate times together. Serkan Bolat is an Edasexual.
Serkan seemed to want to brush past what happened between them, how they ended, but from Eda's pain, it's clear it was gut-wrenching and tragic and that's something he's going to need to recon with in the coming episodes. But how refreshing that they actually talked! That Eda actually expressed her pain to him! Wowza, that's a change from recent episodes when they didn't even have a proper conversation after he got his memory back.
The flashback scenes were a combination of pure brilliance and pain. Just rip out my heart why don't you. Serkan's angry reactions seem very believable for someone suffering what he was going through. I think it's typical to lash out at the person closest to you. And their fear and pain, their commitment to getting him better and seeing it through... those scenes were made all the more heartbreaking knowing that they didn't make it out the other side intact.
On a lighter note, I loved how even despite their intention and best efforts to remain closed off to one another, and away from one another, they couldn't. Physically, Serkan couldn't stay away, and every time Eda was in his presence you saw her resolve slip and her start to feel that old pull towards him. The fact that Eda thinks there's any way to keep this secret and get rid of him, she must just be in full panic mode and not thinking clearly. She's never going to shake him.
Thank goodness Serkan came back and actually issued a sincere apology for what he said at coffee. He definitely owed her one, but what was extraordinary is that it showed that the growth he went through when they were together didn't regress. He was able to apologize and explain that he was angry and hurt and that's why it happened. If you remember from the first time around, saying sorry was something he was just unable to do, so this felt big to me. He's not the same robot Bolat, she left an indelible mark on him.
As for him making her present her proposal, it's really not out-of-line for the professional relationship, however, we all know he did it just so he had an excuse to be around her. That man will take any excuse, plus he likes to get a rise out of her.
The dinner scene was breathtaking. How beautiful and achingly romantic was that setting? Wowza. And what a roller coaster of emotion those scenes were. It was great to watch them talk and laugh. Who didn't swoon when he deveined her shrimp and when she gave him fries? But we had to know it wouldn't last. Eda's speech had me breathless. Serkan had that coming, it hurt but it had to happen. What a relief to see them get things out in the open. Now I hope we get to see them really talk about what happened and why. Explain yourself Serkan!
As for the next episode, I was so hopeful that the Kiraz secret would be out after the final scene, but the first fragman makes it look like that's not going to happen, at least not at the start of the episode. My fear is that if Eda outright lies to him that just makes everything worse. The longer she keeps it from him, when they're back in each other's orbits and it's clear he's not running away, it makes her more and more at fault.
In any case, it looks like we're in for some fabulous scene so I look forward to the second episode!

Station 19 5x07 is back folks and better than ever! After a 3 week hiatus we’re now on the road to some interesting stuff happening. Something came up and i couldn’t catch the episode live BUT i’ve decided to stay a little late to watch it. As usual spoiler alert so let’s hit it:
1. I’m so excited omg i can’t even. Now, onto the stuff happening here: badass firefighters + someone hug Jack please :( + someone hug Vic pls :( + lmao Travis ass is hurting + “your better half” YES + ugh the guys at 23 + Duval is just gonna suck it up? + poor Andy she’s being tortured by working there + Travic is the cutest + BRO WHAT I WAS NOT WAITING THAT AND I KNEW IT HAPPENED + “we’re making a baby” when she says it like that it sounds hot + i can’t i can’t i can’t Carina Deluca will kill me + i dislike Dean’s parents so much
2. Can they have Pru? They are such good parents they should raise her + Bailey is one of the best characters of the Grey’s Anatomy ‘verse by far + oh so this is how they mess up the bathroom + Jack is walking a very delicate line, i hope he gets help + now we know where Travis got his temper + i hope Andy makes them run Maya’s drills😂 + that actually looks therapeutic + i’m scared for them
3. OH MY GOD NO SHIRTS + THE FINGER BITE CARINA + MAYA’S BACK AND EVERYTHING WHAT I NEED HELP + it’s hard to switch from the horny scene to this sad scene😭 + oh Sullivan… well i just hope this doesn’t affect Ruiz and Hughes relationship + imagine Ben and Miranda being in love with baby Pru and just giving her all their love😭 yayyy they are fighting for her😭 hopefully they get to keep her😍
4. Maddox is going to do something stupid i sense it + i hate they are so defensive for no reason + i get they are hurt but they just disrespect Dean at every turn + go off Bailey! You’re right + Duval is going to learn the hard way her lesson just to play it cool with the “boys”
5. They are so drunk it’s just borderline dangerous + oh boy we’re back with these two horny wives😂 + Carina mocking Maya is the best + i am so distracted by the minimun clothing that is going on here + the look of adoration from Maya to Carina😍😍😍 + i’m crying😭😭😭 they are so in love it hurts + oh chocolate and sex don’t mix that good, infections are real dude💀 + come on andy you can do this! + Travis’ mom is so perfect let’s protect her at all costs
6. Oh my lord please don’t make this a thing don’t + we don’t need more messy love triangles + on the other hand marina has been having mindblowing sex for the last two days + ohhh andy paralleling maya in season 3 + go andy! I love how she finally placed Maddox where he needed to be + ohhhhh noooooo😭😭😭😭 baby Pru already knows she’s so pretty i can’t even😭 + ah marina picking up donors😭 + poor Travis his family deserves better + andy is looking hella fine working out + i dislike Sullivan because he’s only having an angle all the time + oh that came out earlier than expected + for whatever reason i thought he was going to find out some other way.
Anyways that is the end of my rambling while watching the episode! Good comeback from those three weeks, for the marina scenes i’d say it was worth it every second, finally we have them in scenes that feel more intimate (in the physical aspect because they do have that emotional intimacy). Dealing with the angst and the battle that will follow for Pru’s custody is going to be hard plus Dean’s best friends dealing with his loss it can be too much. I don’t even want to think too much about Jack and Vic, maybe it would stay as a slip up and nothing more. Good for Andy and stepping up like her father taught her, Maya and Captain Herrera would be so proud of her now🥲 and last but not least Travis’ family dealing with all those feelings and resentment, it’s hard to someone like Travis’ father to think that being gay it’s wrong only to discover that you happen to be gay too, rejecting your family for something that you thought it was “bad” or “evil”. It’s pretty hard to just forgive someone and pretend it never happened, they just need to own their mistakes and try to move on as slow as they can.
Banger episode i’m so ready for next week’s episode, i’m treating this one as a early birthday gift so i enjoyed plenty, i hope you have enjoyed too!

Tumblr media
Peter was gone for hours, he left you alone to collect yourself. He came back at one point to get his trunks to go swimming but when he came back you were gone. So he left again knowing it was not best to search for you, laid by the pool for a bit before heading back in when it was dark. He opened the door to see you with a movie on, laying in bed with a plate by your side and fries in your hand. You look over at him, he's wearing black swim trunks and a towel is over his shoulder.
“Hey.” you told him and he sees how your attitude completely changed.
“Hey.” he doesn't want to push it. If you want to tell hi, you'll tell him.
“I ordered you a burger, no onions and cheddar cheese. Extra fries and a coke” you tell him. You remembered what he didnt like on his burgers, how he liked it exactly. “It's in the microwave.”
“Thanks.” he drops his towel by the door. He makes his way to the dresser to get some clothes, you listen to him walk into the bathroom and turn the shower on.
Day one. Completed. A full day and he still has six left. Six left and he doesn't know what to do. He kissed you, he kissed you as a fake boyfriend, not a real one.
He can still feel your lips on his, he feels how soft they were and even though he enforced the kiss, you were really good at going along with it. If he kisses you again, and again and again, he doesn't know how much he can take until the true peter comes out. He couldn't run to Ned for help, he could but Ned was on vacation too. Ned was just on a much different vacation. One where he wasn't being an actor.
He turns the shower off and grabs a towel, he steps onto the towel and scrubs his hair. He then hears a faint vibration. Your phone, you left your phone in the bathroom.
MJ: Was he at least good?
Betty: peter seems like a good kisser
MJ: i would be surprised if peter knew how to kiss (y/n) without freezing up
You told them. Of course you told them. But did MJ tell you about his crush on you? She was drunk and it was after a party, he was pretty drunk too for his liking. He barely even said anything, she figured it out with one harsh glance and mention of you. But she wouldn't tell you, would she? Even for MJ that's too cruel.
He drops the phone on the counter quickly as he opens the door in a crack to answer you.
“I left my phone in here.”You try not to look down, he's wet and has a towel over his waist. Looking down would ruin everything.
“Right,” he turns to grab the phone then hands it to you. “Here.” you take the phone from his hand feeling his fingers gently touch yours. You give him a soft smile as he shuts the door back up. Soon enough he's opening the door again to come eat. When he's comfortable in bed he looks over at you, scrolling through your phone and occasionally looking up at the screen.
“I'm sorry about earlier.” he tells you and you look over with confused eyes.
“About what?” your voice sleepy and you eyes still seem to be glossy from the tears but the eye cream seemed to do a good job covering it up.
“Your sister, your mom, everything.” he says and you take a deep breath in.
“Im use to it, i dont really need to hear pity about it. Thank you though.” you tell him and he presses his lips together.
It goes silent for a moment before you begin to talk again. “I should probably let you know more about the next few days.” now she's letting me in? He thinks to himself.
“Tommorw will probably be our only normal day together so if you want to go do something then go ahead, wednesday we land in the bahamas. My family always eats at the same restaurant so ill order for you, we should actually probably find food to share because my sister was right we should be like madly in love. We stay mainly on the boat but we go on and off of it, we stay in the Bahamas for two days then we come back on friday night and head back to florida shore and then boom, by sunday night we should be back in new york.” you tell him with a soft pat on the shoulder before stealing a fry.
“Wait, wait, wait.” he shifts to face you. “You're telling me this thing lands?” he raises his brows and you nod.
“Yeah, Peter, I thought I saw you reading that silly pamphlet of yours did you not see that we go to an actual island?” you ask him and he nods sticking another fry in his mouth.
He finishes eating in silence. He sets his plate to the side before getting up and going to the bathroom to brush his teeth. You're already laying in bed, rolled over to the side just waiting for Peter to get back so you can fall asleep.
“You can sleep with your shirt off.” you mumble into the pillow. He stops his movements, thinking you're asleep he looks over.
“What?” he asks and you roll to face him.
“I don't care if you sleep with your shirt off, all boys practically do it. I don't care if you do it or not. Whatever you're most comfortable pete.” you tell him rolling back to your side. He waits until you're asleep, dead asleep to take off his shirt and be comfortable. He doesn't lay too far, he can feel your legs move under the covers and closer to his side and at first he jerks them away, at second he lets his legs entangle with yours. Even if what your aunt said two nights ago was to boyfriend peter, he knew you needed someone to take care of you, you deserved it.
-
The sun peeks through the curtain. Peter is the first to wake and if it's possible he slept longer than last night. He rubs his eyes and falls deeper into the pillow. If there was no family drama, no fake relationship, no overwhelming stress of when to touch you to prove a point. If it were just a simple vacation with a friend, he should love it.
A knock on the door disturbs him from his peaceful fantasy. The knock gets louder and louder and turns more into a bang.
“Peter,” you moan into the pillow. Your foot jerks away from his as you slowly get up. “Can you get the door?”
“No way I’m basically naked.” He looks down at himself seeing hes shirtless. No he wasn’t naked but he didn’t need to put any ideas into your families mind.
“Wake up love birds.” It was your sister. You groan not wanting to deal with her this early. With the shit the both of them pulled yesterday, you don’t want anything to do with them.
“Wait,” you turn to him and scratch down his sides.
“Ouch! What the hell!” He tries to push you off but you know exactly what you’re doing.
“She’s already on to us.” You tell him as you then get off and mess up your hair to open the door.
“Good morning!” Maya spoke with a chirpy voice. Peter really didn’t understand how someone could be ready so early in the morning, be done up to look like a supermodel at 10am. “Did I interrupt something?” She peeks in to see Peter's chest and hair, his face slight tint of red as he sits there.
“Oh you would’ve heard him.” You look over at Peter who’s already reaching for his shirt. “I mean those fingers working at computers all day...he makes it light work.” You are more confident knowing that she doesn’t know. Peter thinks you almost enjoy lying to your sister.
“S-shes just joking…” he gets up and puts his arm around your waist. “She just wants to embarrass me.” He laughs and maya almost Mimics it.
“Hmmm. You know I love you.” You lean in to plant a kiss on his cheek. You hope she’s uncomfortable enough to make her leave.
“Good thing I had mom bring in those condoms right.” She tells. Of course it was her, how could you be so stupid. She probably told your mom lies about you and peter which made her worry.
“Oh they don’t fit, we had to get some more last night.” You wink to her and she looks down at peter and he’s now red.
“Wow—“ she starts but peter has taken his hands off you already.
“Okay, I’m going to take a shower.” He looks at the two of you before leaning into kiss you quickly to really sell all of it.
“Well, I came by just to say how mom didn’t have anything planned so I took it into my own hands and signed you and peter up for that couples painting class I told you about.” She’s playing a game. Maya was more obvious than your older sister. She liked to play little games on you, watch you fall quickly, as your older sister, Arden, liked to wait for her grand moment of tearing you down. You knew she was going to tear you down, you just didn’t know when. She was the one you feared the most. Maya would just play little games.
“Oh, no, peter and I have already planned—“ you start to explain but she puts up her hand.
“Too late it starts at 3!” She tells you and then goes over to the door. “Go take care of him, I think he’s waiting for you.” She winks before opening the door and shutting it.
You take a deep breath in, bite your lip before going over to bang on the door for peter.
“You can come out from hiding now.” You tell him as you flop back down on the bed.
“What was that?” He asked in more of shock.
“What was what?” You look at him confused.
“You just-sex? That’s what you went to?” He asked and you nodded confused as to why he was confused.
“She was going to question, look, peter, to make a lie more believable you have to be embarrassing. No one is perfect or innocent. We couldn’t just be like middle schoolers the whole time.” You told him picking up your phone.
“Couples painting class at 3.” You tell him and he is now even more scared. He hates painting, he can’t do it, he thought today maybe he would have fun. “Mom just texted me and said Thursday we’re going snorkeling. Look I promise you, friday is yours, you can do whatever you want. Want me to leave you be? I’ll do it. I promise.” You told him and he came and sat down on the bed with you. Snorkeling sounded fun, he’s never done it before, he’s also never done a couples painting class.
“I never said I wanted you to leave me alone. I’m actually having a lot of fun.” He promised you and you gave him a look.
“Two minutes ago I was talking about your penis and yesterday my sister tried to interrogate you. That’s fun?” You asked and he held his biceps and looked around.
“Well...no...but I’m on a free cruise so I don’t really think I get room to complain about anything.” He tells you and you laugh and place your hand on his shoulder before getting up.
“It’s okay to say you hate them peter, I hate them too.” You went over to the closet where you filled it with your own clothes.
“Was I good?” He asked and you look over at him.
“At kissing?” You’re shocked that he asked because the real answer is yes, please let’s do it again. But the answer you’d give him is no, it was okay.
“No,” he laughs a little. “At that interaction.” He said and you look down.
“Oh, yeah right. You were great.” You told him and picked out an outfit to wear. You grab your bathing suit only assuming you’d find the pool later.
“Good.” he hums and touches a scratch on his arm. “You know i suck at painting.” he calls out to you as you shut the bathroom. You don't answer so he feels defeated. He falls back into the bed wanting to shut his eyes and just fall back asleep. But this was all for you, all of this was for you.
-
Never did peter ever think he would find himself in a painting class, a small canvas in front of his face surrounded by other real couples. You seemed so calm and natural about everything while he was stressed and tensed up.
“Relax peter,” you lean into him so not a lot of people can hear. “Half of these people suck at art too.” you squeeze his shoulder before listening to the instructor.
He looks back at you in awe, today you wore shoes with a slight heel. You're taller than him but he kind of likes it. You wear glasses instead of contacts which he barely ever saw you do. Sundresses and skirts seemed to be your style on this whole trip even though he never would've taken you as the type of girl to wear that stuff. He's caught in your beauty. Right now he looks at you and thinks if this was real, he would've loved this cruise more than anything.
“Peter,” you snap him out of his thoughts. “Peter.”
“Sorry.” he clears his throat, blinking a few times before picking up the paintbrush in a fist. There is a picture of an island on the projector. He only assumes that's what he's supposed to do.
“No, peter.” you stop him before he starts. You come behind him and take the brush from his hands, you reposition it for him to be more comfortable and he's tense under your touch. “Like this, like a pencil, just relax.” you help him guide the paint across the canvas before you let go and let him do it on his own.
“S-so um…” he scrunches his eyebrows a bit before speaking. “Your sister said the other night something about you wanting to transfer?” he asked and you let out a sigh, one you thought went unnoticed but he heard.
“I was going to,” you started, washing your brush in the water before continuing. “But i changed my mind and stayed.” you told him. He tried to focus on his painting but it was hard. He really sucked at art.
“But why? Don't you like columbia?” he asked.
“I do. I do. It was just the change I guess I don't really know. I say something to them once and it's like I've promised it.” you say with a more bitter tone and he blinks a few times before going back to his paints. He knows not to push it.
“So you're staying?” he asked to make sure. You look over with a soft smirk, so many questions like he's your actual boyfriend.
“Yes Peter, I am staying.” you tell him before turning back on your own work.
The two of you finish painting in silence. The class is only an hour, an hour of your day and maybe you could get yourselves out of dinner with your family. Maybe you can find an excuse to get out of dinner.
“Wow.” he says in shock as he sees your painting. “You're really good.” he feels red as he is embarrassed to show his.
“Here.” you give it to him. “Think of it as a ‘sorry i dragged you onto a ship where my crazy family thinks you're my boyfriend’.” you hand and he laughs a little before taking the painting from you and showing you his. He was right, he wasn't that good at painting but he tried and it was cute.
“It's terrible.” he said, hiding his face a little.
“I like it, it’s very peter.” you told him. He didn't know exactly what it meant but he just smiled and nodded. The two of you left the studio, feeling the most relaxed you've felt this whole time.
“Text my mom.” you tell him as you lock the door of the hotel room.
“What?” he looked at you.
“Text my mom and tell her I'm sick.” you told him and he looked ever more confused.
“Why can't you text her?” he looks at you and you flop on the bed.
“Because you're my boyfriend and I'm sick. Boyfriends take care of their sick girlfriends.” you told him again before handing him your phone to text and making sure he signs it with his name.
You lay on the bed, Peter lays next to you and you roll to face him.
“Have you ever hated May for something she did?” you look at him and he is taken aback.
“N-no. I mean sometimes she's a little much but she just wants to protect me.” he told you. His fingers play with the loose thread of the pillow. He lets out a soft laugh before speaking again. “Your mom reminded me of the time I bought condoms for the first time and she embarrassed me for hours about it. She just wanted me to be safe and all, it made me mad but she just wanted to protect me.” he tells you and you laugh a little.
“Sometimes i wish my mom was like that. I think she sees us as her friends more than her children sometimes.” you tell him and he falls onto his back realizing that's why you hated all of this. Your family wasn't like his, hence he didn't have much but May saw Peter as a son while your mom sees you as a best friend.
“I'm gonna take a nap.” you tell him feeling the wash of sadness and vulnerability wash over you. “Order anything you want, do whatever you want.” you tell him before you fall to your side getting comfortable.
Peter looks at you for a moment. He wants to wrap his arm around you, protect you but he can't.
He moves some hair before he gets up on his own. Thinking about how this was one of his few moments where he could get out away from your family so he was going to lay out by the pool and bring back some food for the two of you later. His few moments where things could be normal.
-
The next morning he is woken by the feeling of you shaking him, the feeling of you pushing his hair back and stroking his cheek.
“Wake up sleepyhead.” you giggle a little. His vision blurry but he can see your sister sitting in the corner of the room, taking up the desk chair with a smirk. She's wearing a pink bikini and you've got sunglasses on the top of your head.
“Mmmh,” he groans, rolling over to the side. “What time is it?” his voice deeper than normal, cracking a little as he looks out the window and can see and island.
“He's always a little cranky in the morning, pulling me closer, sometimes he'd make us late to class if you know what I mean.” you share a laugh with your sister and he rubs his eyes.
“Morning pretty boy.” you tell him with a kiss to his cheek.
You're wearing a flowing see through sun dress, he can see the color of the red bikini through it that makes him swallow hard.
He quickly realizes your sister is actually in the room, he didn't imagine it. She's in the room and sees him practically half naked under the sheets. He wraps himself up and sits up in the bed. It didn't help the first thing he saw in the morning was you in a see through dress and a bikini.
He feels the tightness in his pants not going away. He wants you to tell her to leave so he can get up and go to the bathroom to properly deal with it.
“Mom wants us all down by 11, and then we should only be there for a few hours then we're going to meet at the place we always do and then come back on ship and tomorrow there is nothing planned.” she gets up from her chair and walks over to the door.
“Okay.” you smile at her before she looks at peter, she looks at him more intensely like she's trying to figure him out.
“Take care of your boy.” she winks and Peter's face burns red. The door clicks shut and your smile drops.
“So she got a fucking key.” you walk over to the dressers vanity to start on your hair.
“What?” he asked, still in his uncomfortable position.
“Yeah, they give extra keys at the front desk, families can get ones to other family members' rooms.” you shut your makeup bag and turn to him. “What are you doing?” you give a strange look.
“What do you mean what am I doing?” he asks.
“You're gripping the sheets, staring at me like you're scared?” His face goes red before he groans.
“I just need to go to the bathroom. That’s all.” He spoke quickly and you furrowed your brows.
“Then go.” You tell him and he swallows hard.
“(Y/n).” He says more sternly.
“What!” You laugh a little then look down at the sheets, why he’s trying so hard to cover his lower half. Morning wood. “Oooh…” you laugh a little bit and hold back since he’s embarrassed. “Did I do that?” You ask and he groans rolling his eyes.
“Are you being serious right now?” He asks and you move away from the table over to the door where your bag is.
“I mean, yeah. Did I do that? You’ve seen a girl in a bikini before right parker?” You joke and he flops back on the bed.
“No, you didn’t. I just had a dream. And yes I’ve seen a girl in a bikini before.” He says and you point.
“May, MJ, and Betty don’t count. The internet doesn’t count either.” You tease and he grabs your pillow and throws it at you. He misses and it crashes into the door.
“I had a girlfriend for a year who was real so yeah, I’ve seen a girl in a bikini and much less.” He tells you. Your heart doesn’t mean to hurt when he mentions his ex but it kind of does.
“Right,” you reach for the door. “I’m getting coffee, do you want anything while you work out your problem?”
“Get. Out.” He points to you and you laugh as you pull out your phone.
“I think I’m gonna text Ned.” And with a wink you’re gone. He falls back into the pillow still upset that it’s there and it is caused by you. If he can’t handle seeing you simply like that, or wrapped in a towel after a shower, he doesn’t know how he’s going to survive scuba diving with you all day.

Pairing: Lee Jihoon x Fem!Reader Genre: Collage AU, Fluff, the tiniest angst Warning: Minor self esteem issues (from reader), Language WC: 2.9K
A/N: @woozisnoots my sweetie baby! This is your Holiday gift from me!! I wub yoooou and i hope you like this <333 The song mentioned in the fic is Tell me you love me by Bolbbalgan4 and i actually just kept listening to it on repeat while writing this lol, it’s such a cute song, and all the italic words are song lyrics (the english translations)! Also yes i shamelessly name dropped our friend group in this, don’t judge me
“You don’t accept my hi as usual I know you’re popular and handsome  but you’ve always given the cold shoulder Only to me.”
The lyrics flowed easily from your lips and into the microphone, eyes closed as you felt the vibes of the chorus and attempted to put the right layers of emotion into the song as you did so. The instrumental paused just as the chorus ended you heard the familiar sound of your partner through the headphones.
“Can you run that one more time. Hold that last note a bit longer, and make the staccato in the first beginning a bit sharper.” On the other side of the glass sat Lee Jihoon, and the brains behind the operation despite this being a partnered project. At the beginning of this, you never would have thought that the two of you would have been working together so well. Not with how the project began.
You gave him an affirmation of your understanding and he began from the end of the pre-chorus, letting the melody and his test vocals fill your ears just before you began again.
When you had first been assigned partners, you were less than enthused. Sure, you had a major crush on Jihoon, his passion for music inspired you and you always loved watching him in class when he would perform. But, he was notoriously a rather critical partner. During the last partnered project in class a close friend of yours, Binu, had been assigned to work with him. She ended up confessing that she didn’t really get too much of a say on anything and that Jihoon did the project mostly by himself. Needless to say, she was much happier with this project being partnered with your mutual friend Mar.
The recording session wrapped up nicely and you began packing your things as you realized how late it was in the evening and your friends would start to get concerned if they didn’t hear back from you. So you pulled your phone from your bag and quickly messaged your group chat to let them know the situation. As you went to place your bag over your shoulder you heard the familiar sound of a stomach growling.
Your eyes quickly scanned the room and watched Jihoon sigh and sit back down at the recording booth, his laptop still open but he didn’t look like he had any intention of leaving to get sustenance. Much to your own surprise you decided to speak up.
“Hey, I was planning on grabbing some dinner. Did...you wanna come too? We’ve been here for a while and we could probably use some food.” You suggested, an inviting smile plastered itself onto your face. You hoped it didn’t seem fake, after all you had invited Jihoon to eat before and he had always denied the offer.
Much like all previous times, you saw his rather small head shake in denial.
“Nah, I’ve got some stuff to finish up here. I’ll probably grab something before heading back to my dorms...or maybe I’ll ask Mingyu to pick me up some dinner.” You’d heard about Mingyu before, his roommate who he says he tolerates but you can tell that he does really care about the guy from how he talks about it.
Most people say that Jihoon is hard to read and closed off, but you know they’re wrong. He just...emotes differently, he has his own ways of showing affection and you can see it in his eyes and the little things he does and says. Being around him like this has honestly only made your crush worse.
“Well, alright, but you better eat something and go home tonight. I don’t wanna come back here tomorrow and see you in this same outfit cause you haven’t gone home.” Which...had happened on more than one occasion during this project.
He shrugged, not turning back to face you.
“I brought extra clothes this time.”
***
“Seriously? I can’t believe he said no again! Ugh, I hate him and you deserve better than to pine after that short stack!” Rolling your eyes as you listened to Krys ranting once again.
Since Jihoon refuted your invitation you decided to invite out your best friends. The 5 of you heading to a nearby fried chicken place, crowding into the booth that your friend group had basically claimed (when it was available at least)
“It’s fine Krys, he’s just really into his work. He’s probably going to be in the studio editing until all hours of the morning.” You explained before shoving some of the complimentary salad into your mouth as you took a break from the chicken itself. “I might even take him some food before I head back to the dorms.”
“Nu-uh! I’m not letting you! That boy doesn’t even talk to you outside of class, he doesn’t deserve your time or your energy!” Krys exclaimed.
“I mean, he kinda does. Talk to her, I mean he waved at her last week.” Maya brought up in between her unsuccessful attempts at stealing the rest of the table’s pickled radish. “We were walking to the lounge and she saw him and waved at him, and he finally waved back.”
“Oh what, after ignoring her for a whole semester? Real nice of him. My best friend deserves better!” She declared, aggressively taking another bite of her chicken before continuing. “If I weren’t already dating the best man in the whole world, I would just date you myself.”
This brought the rest of the table another fit of laughter. It was never a dull moment in your friend group and you were always grateful that you had them in your life.
“This just in, Krys won’t leave big dick Wonwoo so her best friend can have a good relationship.” Mar joked, cackling at the thought. The laughter seemed to get worse when she realized that Wonwoo himself had just walked up to the table to set down a drink refill for Binu. The male’s face was flushed red, obviously having heard the conversation. Which prompted another round of joyful laughter from the group.
It was a good night, but your mind still drifted back to Jihoon, who was most likely still sitting alone in the studio, hungry yet still hard at work. As the conversation drifted away from you finally, you got Wonwoo’s attention and ordered a small meal for take out with a plan to deliver the food before returning home. Even if Krys would give you shit for it.
***
“Jihoon, it’s me” You knocked on the studio door as you entered, assuming you wouldn’t be interrupting anything since you saw the light on but heard now sounds from inside. Surprisingly, or rather unsurprisingly, you got no response as you entered. Simply making your way in despite any acknowledgement.
The more surprising thing was what you found once you entered. There, still sitting in the rolly chair with his head firmly planted on the desk in front of his work laptop was Lee Jihoon. Fast asleep, small snores leaving his frame as he dreamed. It would honestly be pretty cute if it weren’t for the fact that you knew this was probably happening because of how much he overworked himself.
You let out a small sigh, placing the bag on the small coffee table in the room (you didn’t want to set it on the desk with all the equipment) and grabbed his jacket that he had tossed onto the nearby sofa before draping it over his shoulders. You couldn’t really do much more for him without lifting the male up and transferring him to the couch, and you were pretty sure he would wake up if you even attempted that.
“Night Jihoon.” With that final goodbye you exited the room and returned back to your dorm to get some homework done for a few of your other classes.
It was about 2:30 the next morning when your phone vibrated, indicating a message. Sparing a glance to the device you read the familiar name ‘Lee Jihoon’ as the sender. The message was no more than a simple “Thank you.” but that was good enough for you.
***
As you expected, even being the harmony vocals for the song Jihoon’s talent far outshined your main vocals. You weren’t upset or anything, but you were definitely starting to regret letting him talk you into the main vocal position for this project. You didn’t even really have any commentary to or feedback to give him. His voice fit the song perfectly and you could feel the emotion in his words as he sang.
When he exited the booth and took a seat on the sofa to take a break you spoke up.
“Are you sure you shouldn’t be the one leading the song?” You questioned, head tilted to the side a bit as you watched him gulp down a bottle of water. Your words took him off guard and he fixed you with a rather confused look, so you continued. “I mean, you have such a great voice and I really think you capture the emotion in the song better than I do. So like…”
“What are you talking about?” He cut off your ramblings before you could continue, his eyes staring intently into your own. “You have an amazing voice, I’m literally blown away anytime you step into the booth. It’s part of the reason I was glad we got partnered for this project.”
It was almost as if your brain had short circuited, you didn’t know what to say. He had never spoken about your singing like that before, much less admit that he was...glad you were his partner. A part of you worried that he was lying just to spare your feelings, but the logical part knew that Jihoon wasn’t someone who would waste the energy to do that.
“Let me put it this way,” he began again. “If I didn’t think you were doing a good job, if i thought your vocals would get us points docked off, then I wouldn’t have let you sing the Main. Got it?” His gaze seemed to pierce right to your very soul and you couldn’t find it in yourself to argue back and decided to just take his word for it. So you simply nodded a response.
It seemed that Jihoon wasn’t done surprising you tonight, as a smile so tender made its way onto his face. Your heart skipped a beat as you looked into his eyes, you could feel the heat rushing to your face and you prayed that he couldn’t hear the loud throbbing of your heart as he watched you.
The moment was soon broken by the loud blaring of a familiar pop song, Jihoon’s face dropping at the sound. He quickly grabbed his phone off of the coffee table and put it up to his ear. You decided to be polite and at least try not to listen in, pulling out your own phone and messaging the group chat to see what was up.
“What do you want, Mingyu?” He began, definitely sounding more irritated than before he had taken the call. You couldn’t hear the voice on the other end but from the gumbling that left Jihoon’s lips you wouldn’t have been surprised if his roommate was pushing his buttons for whatever reason.
“No. I’m not and you need to stop asking. I’m working right now.” He paused for a moment, his voice lowering to almost a whisper as if that would make you unable to hear him. “Yes, she’s here too, so stop asking. Mingy-” He groaned as the male on the other end seemed to cut him off, you weren’t too sure with what but now you could vaguely hear the loud voice of his roommate on the line and couldn’t help laughing softly. The sound causing Jihoon’s eyes to flicker over to you, causing your heart to skip a beat as you quickly tried to make it seem like you were just laughing at something on your phone.
“Shut it. We’ll talk when I get home...yes i’m coming back tonight!” With an irritated sigh, Jihoon ended the call. You weren’t sure he gave Mingyu any time to give a farewell but if you were being honest the conversation had been pretty amusing.
Setting his phone down on the couch, Jihoon let out a sigh and ran a hand through his thick black locks. A silence falling over the two of you as you typed away on your phone, trying not to make eye contact again. You were so engrossed with your act you didn’t even hear when Jihoon stood from the couch and made his way over to the chair you were currently occupying.
“Before we call it, could you re-record from the bridge to the end. When I was editing it last night there was some feedback so I wanted to get a better recording.”
“Oh, um yeah sure!” You weren’t sure why he hadn’t mentioned that before, and you didn’t recall hearing any feedback from your vocals when he was recording. But still, you took him at his word and entered the small recording booth once again.
“I’ll start from just before the bridge.” He said over the speakers once your headphones were pulled snuggly over your ears. You cleared your throat and took a deep breath before nodding and signaling him to start.
“I really like you a lot But do you think we can’t be together? I feel small in my school uniform skirt Looking big on me, Yeah The tall, pretty girls are all around you.  Oh whoa~”
Getting through the bridge you poured your emotions into it. Thinking about your feelings for Jihoon and the longing for him to feel the same for you. Honestly, through this whole process the song the two of you had written was so...cathartic for you. Expressing things you never verbalized, how despite your attempts Jihoon never really spoke to you outside of class but he always seemed so kind when you were working. Or how, because of his looks and his talent he seemed to be surrounded by girls who thought he was wonderful.
“If you like me, or you love me Just say yes, yes, yes And then I’m your girlfriend And your my boyfriend Tell me you like me.”
The last few chords streamed through your headphones and a silence fell over the room. Just as you were about to take the headphones off you heard a voice come through, the familiar voice of your partner and crush.
“I like you...a lot.”
You froze like a deer in headlights, almost positive that you had misheard him. Eyes quickly landing on him, watching him through the glass. You couldn’t tell what he was thinking, but through the tint you could see the soft pink dusting his cheeks and the tips of his ears as his eyes stared down at the desk.
“Don’t say anything. I just...wanted to let you know. The reason I didn’t want to sing the main vocals is because I was worried you would be able to tell.” He continued, eyes still not lifting from the table to meet your gaze. “All of the lyrics I added were about you. I just...changed the pronouns.”
It was unbelievable to think that Lee Jihoon could possibly love you back. He was too...wonderful, and the fact that the both of you had used this song to express those feelings was almost unreal.
Thinking back on it, on all the interactions you had attempted to have with him outside of class. You realized that he wasn’t ignoring you, his eyes had always met your own but he was just uncertain.  He had lacked the confidence to speak to you despite your obvious interest in him. It made your pinning seem silly now.
You still honored his wishes and said nothing, simply taking the headphones off and draping them onto the music stand before exiting the booth. Stopping right next to the object of your affections.
“Jihoon, look at me? Please?” Hesitantly, his gaze turned to you and he looked flustered, more flustered than you had ever seen him. “I like you too, a whole lot.”
Your words had his eyes lighting up, a look of disbelief crossing his face as you continued.
“Could I...would it be alright if I kiss you?” Before today, you had only ever imagined kissing Jihoon. What it would be like had been nothing more than a small fantasy that you thought about, but seeing him nod looking away still flustered, it almost seemed to good to be anything more than a dream.
Hesitantly, you reached out a hand to caress his cheek, your heart speeding up as he lifted a hand to press over your own. When your lips met, it was like the stars had aligned.
It wasn’t a perfect kiss, it was shy and soft but the emotion you felt simply from his lips pressing back against your own was enough to cause your heart to soar. It was like two puzzle pieces finding one another how well his lips felt against your own. You decided in that moment that he would get to hear everyday how much you absolutely loved him, he would never need to ask or hesitate again. Cause that’s what kind of love you wanted to give him, and all you needed to do was say it.

'Morning to all!
A bussy weekend is in front of me, so I'll post the next part of the story now :)
Wish you all a great weekend! :)
CALL OF THE RAVEN
PART 22
Mayas POV
I barely managed to get any sleep. I woke up every little, checking if Jake was breathing. I was terrified seeing him yesterday, but also relieved when they finaly got back. I got out of bed, glancing once more at him before i closed the door, heading for the kitchen. Jessy was already there, with fresh coffee just about done. „'Morning.“ I said to her, both of us sharing the same sleepless face. I sat down, Jessy joining me after a minute, handing me a cup. „Is Dan ok?“ i asked, guilt for what happened crawling at me. „He will be.“ She started, and chuckled a bit „I think his pride got more hurt then him actually.“ I smiled at it a bit. „I'm sorry, Jessy.“ She looked at me „What for?“ „For all of this.“ I said and sighed „What if something happened to Dan again? I mean, worse then it did yesterday. Things just got somewhat normal for you, and now i've pulled you back again in some weird shit.“ Jessy took my hand, squeezing it hard „Hey, we both told you before, we're here for you. And not just for the good part.“ „I know, Jessy, but i dont want for anything to happen to any of you, i could never forgive myself for it.“ Just the tought of something happeneing to her, or Dan, ached me. She smiled at me „We're in this together, and there's nothing you can say or do that will make us change our minds.“ „You can say that again!“ Dans voice came from the door, and we both turned to him. „And, besides“ he said, taking a cup from the cupboard and filling it with coffee „Your man would be lost without me.“ He turned to us, grinning. I laughed „You are starting to like him more and more, aren't you?“ Dan sat down and looked all serious at me „I will neither confirm nor deny this!“ Jessy and me laughed at it, Dan winking at me with a grin. „Thank you, both of you, for everything.“ Jessy smiled at me, and Dan said „All right, all right, its too early for that wooshy mooshy stuff.“ He got up, going to the fridge, opening it and rubbing his hands together „Its time for Dans special eggs breakfast.“ I looked at Jessy, rising my eyebrow „Do i dare to eat that?“ She laughed „Dont worry, it's actually good.“
Dans cooking skills wer pretty good, he made us a great breakfast, I had no idea i was that hungry. I helped Jessy clear the table after we finished, refilling my coffee cup before sitting down again. „Dan, what happened yesterday?“ i asked. He looked at me a bit uneased „Shouldnt we wait for Jake to join us for this?“ „Please, Dan, who knows how long he will be asleep. I just need to know.“ Jessy looked at him, squeezing his hand „I'm sure Jake wont mind.“ She was as much impatient as me to find out. Dan switched glances between the two of us, sighing desperatly „All righ, fine. But just for the record, if he asks, you two better stand up for me.“ We both just nooded at him. „Ok.“ he said, taking a deep breath before he started telling us about last night.
„What the hell is going on here?“ Jessy said, confusion all over her face. I was as much confused as her, but i was more concerned about the pictures part. Just the thought of someone watching me, following me arround, sent chills down my spine. What was happening here? What was this all about? Was this related to the prior events, or was this something completely different? There wer so manny questions in my head, but no answers to any of it. „You all right there, Maya?“ Dan asked, looking worryingly at me. „Im fine“ i said. „I mean, im not fine, this is all getting freaking confusing more and more!“ Both of them wer looking at me intensly now. „But dont worry, i'm not gonna loose it.“ I looked at Dan „Did Jake say anything more to you about the laptop?“ „No, nothing, so you will just have to wait for him to tell you more.“
Jakes POV
My eyes opened and It took me a moment to remember what happened and to realize where i was. My head was still hurting, but compared to yesterday this was a relief. I got in sitting position, no clue what time it was, the curtains wer drawn over the window. I took the glass that was next to bed and some more painkillers, drinking it before i got up and dressed. I left the room heading for the kitchen. The moment i saw the grim faces of Jessy and Maya i knew. „So, you told them.“ I said to Dan as i entered the kitchen. „Sorry, man, they begged me.“ He told me, as i sat down next to Maya. She leaned to me, giving me a soft kiss „Dont be mad that we didnt wait for you, i just needed to know.“ „Its fine.“ I said smiling at her. „Want some coffee?“ Jessy asked, and i nodded. „How you feeling?“ Maya asked. „Better. My head still hurts, but at least the dizziness is gone.“ „Good.“ She said, but worry was still present all over her face.“Was there anything useful on that laptop, by the way?“ Jessy asked, handing me the cup. „Nothing, i'm afraid. It was just one of those automatic calling programs, you can basicly get it anywhere. And with some easy tweeking, you can set it however you want.„ „Great, so not much help there.“ she said sighing. „Did any of you saw who it was that attacked you?“. „No, i got hit from behind, i didnt see anything.“ Dan answered, turning his look to me. „Nothing.“ I said „I rushed in too foolishly when i saw Dan.“ „Damn it.“ Jessy said, when Maya asked. „Did the preson say anything? Before you got knocked out?“ You can't save her, boy. She will die. The words echoed in my head again. „Jake?“ I turned to her. She looked so tired, and beaten with worry. So i lied. „No, nothing.“ She continued looking at me so intensly, i was sure she would see right through me. But she just leaned her head to my shoulder, sighing „So we still don't know anythig.“ „I'm sorry, Maya.“ I said, leaning my head to hers „I hoped we would find something, anything that would shed some light to this.“ „Me, too“ she said, sounding so defeated. „We wont give up, we will just try harder.“ Dan said. „We wont let a few blows to the head make us quit.“ He grinned, Jessy shaking her head and rolling her eyes at him. „ Joking aside“ she started, giving Dan a stare „But Dan is right, we wont give up.“
Mayas POV
Jessy made us stay for lunch before letting us go back to the motel. We all just ate in silence, lost in our toughts. All this was just getting more confusing with each day, leaving so manny unanswered questions in my head. „I saw Phil the other day.“ Jessys words snapped me out of my thoughts. Both Jake and me looked at eachother for a moment, and i turned to Jessy „Yeah?“ She sighed „He didnt want to tell me what happened, but he has a nasty bruise on his face.“ „Really?“ i said, trying to sound surprised, averting my eyes back to my plate. Jake smirked at it. „You know something about it, man, dont you?“ Dan said to Jake grinning. Jessy looked at us „Oh, god, what happened?“ she asked desperatly. „Well, you know how you said to me Phil can be a jerk sometimes?“ i asked, and she just nodded. „Phil was a jerk. So Jake hit him.“ I said nonchalantly, Dan grinning even more „Nice, man.“ He said to Jake, and he grinned back at Dan. Jessy looked bewildered at Jake „You did what?!“ „She just told you.“ he said to her, Jessy rolling her eyes, turning to me. „Can you be more specific, please.“ I sighed „Fine. Phil provoked him, and it happened, Jessy. I cant say im sorry about it, he did deserve it, he crossed the line.“ Dan was still grinning at it, but Jessy got up from the table, throwing her hands up in desperation and annoyance „Great, now i have to find another place.“ I turned to her „Another place for what?“ „To celebrate me getting that job at the library.“ „Oh, congratulation, Jessy, i'm so happy for you!“ i chimed. „Thanks!“ She said cheerfully before getting serious again. „But I still have the same problem. I cant have this one“ she said pointing at Jake „having another run down with my brother again.“ „Hey, i dont have to be there.“ Jake told her, and she looked at him, rising her eyebrow „ Maya would be, and i highly doubt you would let her be alone anywhere near my brother after what happened.“ „Point taken.“ he said to her thoughtfully. „I dont mind going to the Aurora, Jessy.“ I said, and all looked at me. I rolled my eyes „Its not like i would be going there for Phil. And besides, it's a big place, i'm sure we can all avoid each other just fine for that one evening.“ I took a bite of off my plate „It's actually Phil you have to talk to about it.“ I started „Maybe he banned Jake and me from the Aurora after it.“ i said grinning at her. Jessy groaned with frustration at us „Argh, can anything be simple with you two!?“ „But its more interesting like this, babe!“ Dan chimed cheerfuly, Jake and me looking at eachother and chuckling, leaving poor Jessy just shake her head at us all.
Back at the motel, i just threw myself on the bed. „What are we gonna do now?“ „I'll take a shower for sure.“ Jake said as he sat on the bed rubbing at the side of his head. „I didnt mean it like that.“ I rolled my eyes at him. „I know you didnt.“ He said desperatly. „But to be honest, i have no clue what to tell you.“ I burried my face in the pillow and screamed, making him look at me. „Sorry“ i said „Im just fucking frustrated with it all right now. I have no clue what is happening here, or why it's happening. And we didnt find out anything yesterday, so we're back at square one!“ „Dont you think this all isnt frustrating for me also?“ he said, but his voice was adding something else to that frustration. I looked him straight in the eyes „Are you sure there isnt anything else you want to tell me?“ I tought his eyes widened for a second at my question, but he just said „Ofcourse not, I told you everything.“ There was something in his voice, I wasnt sure he was telling me the truth, wich just made me more frustrated. „Fine, whatever. Go take your shower.“ I said a bit snapily. „Fine, i will!“ he said, a bit of hurt in his voice, getting up and going to the bathroom, slamming the doors. He stomped back a moment later, his hoodie and pants gone. „Why are you angry at me now?“ he asked, rising his voice. „Im not!“ i said, also rising my voice, getting up from the bed. "I'm just frustrated and angry with everything now, ok?!“ „Fine! Dont take it out on me then!“ he said and stomped back. I threw myself backwards on the bed. Shit, i didnt want to fight with him, but all that was happening was driving us both crazy. It was just a matter of time before we would snap at eachother. Bathroom doors opened once more, Jake stomping out again with just his boxers on. He came to the bed and grabbed my hand, pulling me up and going back towards bathroom. „What are you doing?“ I asked. He just continued going „You look sexy when angry, and i'm horny now, so you're taking a shower with me.“
Jakes POV
I couldnt sleep, the toughts wer racing wild in my mind. I turned to her, and smiled. I could just stare at her like this for hours. She was sleeping soundly, it was the only time she looked at peace these last days. I got out of bed silently, going to the bathroom, and just stared at the mirror. I hated myself for lying to her. But how could i tell her the truth!? Those words wer haunting me, eating at me inside. I feared what it might do to her if she only knew. If i wasn't so careless that day, things might end differently, this all could have ended by now. I was furious at myself for that, rage boiling in me. „Fuck!“ i cursed out loud, my fist involuntarily colliding with the wall next to the mirror. „Jake?“ She called to me from the room after a moment, making me curse inside. Breathing deep to calm myself, I took the glass and filled it with water before going back. „Sorry, did I wake you?“ i said, forcing a smile on my face. She just smiled at me sleepily „Dont worry. Is everything all right? I thought i heard a noise.“ „Yeah, sorry, that was me. I knocked down the glass.“ I said. „Oh, ok. Well, come back to bed.“ She said yawning, laying back on her pillow. I got under the covers, pulling her close to me, hugging her tight. She smiled, snuggling even closer to me before falling back to sleep almost instantly. Those cursed words came back to me again. But no, that wont happen, what he said to me, he was wrong. I made a promise to myself then, I'll make sure nothing happens to her. I wont let her down, ever again.

I really love how much they’ve given Marina this season. For a gay couple on a prime time soap, I really didn’t expect much and at first they exceeded my low expectations by really messing them up, but since season 4 they’ve been trying. I still expect useless drama down the line, it’s just how these kinds of shows are, but I do think their issues will be resolved healthily rather than with the crap we got before. Mainly I’m glad they’re letting Maya grow and loosen up again, she deserves it!
“at first they exceeded my low expectations by really messing them up” Hahahaha! But yes, basically! I mean, gosh, of course I loved them in s3 but so much of it was down to the chemistry of the two actresses. Not to say there was NO base in the writing and characterization, both had existed for years before meeting, Carina was new to me but there was the weight of years of character development and history to draw on behind her already. And I can’t say the dynamic wasn’t appealing, Maya so intense and single-minded, in a different direction, Carina winning her over by just being Carina. Okay, I’ve convinced myself, season 3 wasn’t bad for them (except that one thing)! :P
But these last three eps especially, I mean, 4a, okay, it was a start, but the three eps since the hiatus so far, they remind me of FTWD’s 6a, where the reaction to the first ep was, huh, that was surprisingly good, who’d have thought, and then after the second ep it was like, whoa two in a row, and after three, it’s like, hmm, is this a pattern?? I’m certainly not going to expect S19 to have changed what it is, but I will say that the three eps so far have been actually pretty great for them, in ways that indicate a shift in mindset.
There’s just more attention being paid to who they are beyond what their couple of minutes can add to each ep. I remember someone asked me before 4x06 aired, what did I want from it, and I said things like, communication, Carina’s perspective, Maya supporting Carina, and we’re...getting that?
And I have to say, it’s actually kind of fun to see a character like Maya who has had these issues (again, cheating aside) that are real and not pretty, it gives the story some bite, the way, Harper in HS, or...Atypical’s Izzie did. Like, their flaws and their growth aren’t the emotional equivalent of a makeover where a gorgeous actress takes off her glasses. There’s actually work that has to be done, and it makes the story that much more interesting, because yes, as lovely as Maya has been these last few eps, you still see the impatience and just, Mayaness and it only highlights how much work she’s putting in to overcome that. Willingly, for Carina. Like, I believe her speech in the s3 finale a lot more now, you know?

❝dear reader, first and foremost, thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me, yet again, to achieve this milestone. it’s very cliché to say but i would have never been able to reach such an important without your input— each like, each comment, each question, each reblog, each reading of my work gives me the greatest joy and i wish i could be able to share with you the level of happiness coursing through my mind every time it happens.  what i can do, however, is to thank you my own way by writing for you, if you’ll let me. you will see a succession of prompts separated in three categories fluff/angst/smut (please, be assured to be 18 or above to request this category), so send me a love letter with a number, a category, and the recipient of your letter (the included verses are haikyuu, one piece, my hero academia and naruto, and of course, here is a reminder that i also write for women.) and in return, i will send you a love letter right back. thank you, once again, for everything.
sealed with an everlasting kiss, nikki.❞

dear @sasukelore, you’ve been my first friend on here and i’m still wondering how you can handle my dumb ass. i love you and respect you more than words will ever be able to say although i don’t say it a lot, thank you for always being here for me, you’re my safe person.
dear @amoroushero, where to start? the amount of love you’ve given me is too much to fit inside my smol body and i’m still in awe that you, a writer i’ve always looked up to even before starting my blog, is estimating me so much. i wish i could give you all the love in the world because you deserve nothing but the absolute best.
dear @toorusushijima, wife *insert the discord blushing emoji* never did i once think i’d be able to grow so close to someone in so little time and i just have this lingering feeling that i’ve known you since forever. words fail to describe how much i genuinely care about you and how much i love you, you’re a pure gem.
dear @kyojuroandcie, here again, i have absolutely no idea how you managed to keep up with all my bullshit this far. you have all the qualities one could dream of and i’m reminded everyday of how lucky i am to have you in my life when you barely breathe. i shall protect you at all costs, je t’aime si, si fort.
dear @aomineavenue, the first thing which comes to my mind as soon as i think about you is the urge to scream how much i love you and how much i wish i could squeeze the life out of you in a loving embrace. you make me the happiest person on a daily basis and i wish i could give you half of the serotonin you’ve given me. i love you more than kuroo tetsurou.
dear baby thots, my heart is weighing so much from all the love i have for you. every one of you, individually, is worthy of so much love and happiness. i hope one day i will be able to repay you for all the love you’ve given me, in the meantime, just know that i will cherish your presence forever, thank you for being yourselves and thank you for becoming my second home. (i hope you’ll be able to forgive me for the lack of singularity but i mean that for each and every single one of you, and i’m sending so much love to lumi, maya, skye, jeanie, jen, sol, eli and vale in particular, my heart belongs to you.)
