Its #BatAppreciationDay so please appreciate this awesome 19th century Japanese kosode decorated with embroidered lucky bats, photographed in 2019 at The Life of Animals in Japanese Art exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in DC:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kosode with Bats Japan, Edo - Meiji periods, 19th century silk twill, paste-resist dyed, embroidery, 67⅜ × 48⅞ in. National Museum of Japanese History, Chiba Prefecture
“In the West, bats - nocturnal in habit and denizens of dark places tend to be viewed as unlucky, but in China they have long been considered an auspicious motif (one of the characters used to write the word "bat" is a homonym for good fortune). The Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjüro VII (1791-1859) used bat motifs in his costumes, and the perception of these animals as a chic design element spread rapidly throughout Japan in the nineteenth century. Here a great number of them are arranged in right-left symmetry from the base of the collar to the hem.”
The above info is from the official exhibition catalog - this bat kosode is on p. 124:

Some interesting theories about Yagasuri
Yagasuri is a pattern inspired by arrows with a symbol of aiming at a target and is an image of goodness and luck. Edo period brides are prayed for good luck to ensure they would not return to their hometown when they got married.
Yagasuri is also similar to Hamaya 破魔矢 – a type of lucky charm, used to destroy evil spirits. Yagasuri aiming at Utahime is symbolize that this is a kind of charm for her. From Gojo and towards Utahime carries the image of a lucky charm.
Tumblr media
The image of Yagasuri with Miko (including kimono and hakama) will remind you of the Yagasuri Hakama - one of the traditional outfit that female students wear at graduation ceremonies.
Tumblr media
This type of traditional clothing originates from the Meiji era, where Western influences began to be introduced to Japan. Hakama and kimono, boots are the remind of Meiji and Taisho era schoolgirls.
Tumblr media
During Taisho Roman, female students wear hakama and ride bicycles and play sports. ロマン in [大正ロマン] include dream and romantic. The manga: Haikara-san ga Toru depicts women of the Taiso period which created anime, films, plays or television. The character Benio Hanamura wears a kimono with arrow motifs, a maroon hakama, black boots, and a large ribbon on her head. Yagasuri Hakama is said to be influenced by this manga and is widely popular.
Tumblr media
Gojo's story about returning from abroad about the blending between the West and Japan during the Meiji and Taisho eras. Meaning of 143 - "i love you" is also said to originate from Minots's Ledge since 1894 and it has also been called the most dangerous and romantic lighthouse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The image of an arrow pointing to the left can also be understood as a metaphor for reading from right to left and from Gojo (341 -> 143).

I dunno if Japanese has the right idea, but it does have a delightfully bonkers idea (many first and second person pronouns depending on gender, age, and relative social status within the interaction, including a special first person pronoun for pompous mascot characters - 吾輩, or wagahai - and then like, two simple third person pronouns that they stuck on in the meiji era because they don't really use third person - they rely on context cues - and it was mostly to appeal to Westerners)
(OK wagahai originally started as a pronoun for incredibly high status officials and was falling out of fashion when Natsume decided to give it to the former stray kitten protagonist of I Am A Cat 吾輩は猫である in 1905, and now it's the funny animal pronoun. Bowser and Morgana from Persona 5 use it.)
I would say probably if I were to invent a language that was meant to appeal to my personal sensibilities I would probably not do pronouns like that. But how lucky am I to live in a world with such a diversity of languages, each with their own quirks that would make me want to explode into a million little giblets if I tried to learn them. Stuff like that is what life is all about. It's what makes the world cool.

My biggest issue with paradox Interactive's line of grand strategy games, designwise, is the balancing act between the doctrines of "nothing ever happens" and "weeks where decades happen". They're rigged to sit right in the middle, so everything transpires at a relatively even and balanced pace. It is practically impossible for the AI or often even player to pull off something like Alexander the Greats conquests or the Ottoman conquest of the Mamluks without scripted events, or worse yet, I've never seen the AI in Vic 3 pull off the meiji restoration. Not once.
The only attempt by paradox to redress this I've seen is the lucky nations mechanic in EU3, where some countries could randomly get massive buffs for massive stunts, but even then it's an ineffectual solution.

levi ackerman x gn!reader, 0.6k words, cw food + sfw based on this headcanon that levi would ration out your chocolate stash
Tumblr media
“leviii.” his name falls from your lips in the form of a long, petulant whine, punctuated with a sigh and an insistent tug on his arm. “levi, darling. one more please. just one more and i won’t bother you again. pleeease.”
“no, it’s bad for your teeth.”
“but it’s not like i’m going to eat the whole thing!”
“no.”
you sulk at his persistence, turning your back to him with a huff. behind you, levi makes no move to soothe your temper tantrum, keeping his eyes on the television.
you weren’t really mad at him—after all, getting levi to ration your chocolate stash was your own idea. unfortunately, having free access to all the candy in your apartment only meant instant demolition, and for the sake of your blood sugar level (and your own sanity), you’ve entrusted your lover with your sweets stash.
so technically, levi was just doing his job (albeit a bit too well, with the death grip he currently has on your box of strawberry chocolates), but that doesn’t stop you from sulking like there was no tomorrow.
on a typical day, you were more than happy to comply when levi steps in to take your treats away from you. today’s chocolates, however, were your absolute favourites – you were only allowed to have one single box of apollo strawberry chocolates at a time in your apartment because those little bicoloured morsels of goodness were your kryptonite; the smooth and creamy strawberry layer atop a ring of dark chocolate creating the perfect blend of sweet and bitter.
you hear a faint rustle behind you, then the distinct sound of the cardboard box popping open.
“stop sulking. you can have one last piece, but that’s it.” came levi’s stern voice.
a flash of pink and brown appears in the corner of your vision, held delicately between long and dainty fingers. you couldn’t help the satisfied smile that pops up on your face almost immediately, and you turn to claim the little chocolate between your lips, but stop short of it.
a quick inspection of the snack had your jaw dropping in surprise.
“levi, look! it’s a star!” you exclaimed, grabbing his hand to take a closer look at the chocolate. levi tilts his head in confusion, looking very much like a kitten that just woke up from a nap.
he brings the sweet nearer to his face for closer inspection. hmmm. it is indeed star-shaped, its five smooth edges quite unlike the typical frilled edges of the chocolates left in the box.
“the odds of getting one is about one in a thousand,” you continued excitedly, cheeks bursting with a grin so bright it could rival the sun. “we’re so lucky! i can’t believe i almost ate it.”
“is there a prize for getting a star, then?” levi asks.
“not really. just a placebo sense of good luck, i guess.”
your husband quirks a brow at that. “well, do you feel luckier?”
“kinda!” you beam, and levi feels his heart stir in his chest at the sight.
“maybe we’ll see a rainbow later,” you continued, looking out your window at the cloudless blue sky. “or we’ll find a four leaf clover. hey levi, maybe the eczema on your arm will start clearing up.”
“you brat,” he scoffs dismissively, though he can’t quite fight the smile that pulls at his lips. your excitement was definitely contagious. “if it does, i’ll buy you another hundred boxes of this shit.”
though looking at the way you dip your head down to pluck the chocolate from his grasp, soft lips brushing delicately against his fingers and a satisfied smile gracing your face, levi can’t help but already feel a hundred, no, a million times luckier.
Tumblr media
a/n: apollo strawberry chocolates are made by meiji, one of, if not the biggest manufacturer of dairy products, confectioneries, and other foods in japan. they're one of my fave snacks—not only are they irresistibly delicious, they're also adorable. <3 thank you for reading!

Koihana Bakumeiroku Prologue: Chapter 3
Tumblr media
I do not own any of the Koihana Bakumeiroku content being uploaded on this blog, everything belongs to CYBIRD and Animate. Please support them by playing the game and buying stories. Not 100% accurate, expect mistakes.
read this before interacting with my posts
???: — Oh, hey there.
???: I’m the person you’re looking for, right?
Rin: Huh…!?
(“The person I’m looking for”...)
I blinked in surprise at the man who suddenly appeared before me.
Kido: — Doctor Mori, why are you here?
Katsu: Mori? … Oh, he’s that military doctor, right?
The man named “Mori” nodded enthusiastically in response to Kido and Katsu.
Mori: Oh? Nice to meet you. My name is Mori Ogai. I’m a military doctor and professional writer.
(“Mori Ogai”?)
My heart skipped a beat.
(He has the same name as the doctor in the letter.)
Mori: A government official who admired my skills called me here. I just finished the treatments.
Saito: ! There should be members of the Drawn-Sword Regiment among them…
Mori: Ah, your comrades? I treated them well, so they should have no problems or prognostic symptoms…
Saito heaved a sigh of relief at Mori’s words.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mori: Anyway… I didn’t expect to meet you today, Rin.
Rin: My name…
(He knows my name. This is definitely the right person…)
Kido: … I see. Doctor Mori is the doctor Rin is searching for.
Mori: Exactly.
(He’s the person I’m searching for…!)
I was shocked to see that he looked younger than I had expected.
Moreover, I also didn’t expect to meet him here.
Saito: … That’s surprising. How did you know that she’s looking for you?
Mori: Hmm, because of my doctor instincts, maybe? And she's a former patient of mine?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Katsu: What nonsense.
Kido: … You were eavesdropping.
Mori: Am I caught?
Saito: Nevertheless, it’s great that the two of you met.
Saito looked at me and smiled, I nodded.
Rin: Yes…! It’s all thanks to you and everyone else.
(Thank goodness Saito brought me here…)
If it weren't for him, I might never have this lucky opportunity to meet Doctor Mori.
Saito: I didn't do anything helpful.
Katsu: Whatever it is, this is a good thing. So we’ll leave the rest to you?
Mori: Ah, of course. I’m done with my work here, so let’s head back to my place and have a chat.
Rin: Sure, thank you so much!
When I first arrived in Tokyo, I was worried about what could go wrong, but…
(Mm, it looks like things are going in the right direction.)
Rin: Then…
Just as I was about to say goodbye to everyone—
Kido: … Please hold on.
Kido stopped me from leaving.
Rin: Yes?
Kido: Do you have a place to stay in Tokyo?
Rin: Oh…
(Actually, I haven't decided on that.)
I was a little tight on cash, so I was intending to temporarily stay in a cheap inn.
Mori: You can come to my place!
Rin: What.
Mori made a suggestion, seemingly realizing what I was thinking.
Rin: But that would be too much of a bother to you…
Mori: You can help me with some work. Moreover, your cooking is delicious, so I welcome you with open arms!
Mori said while waving his hand in an exaggerated manner, and I tilted my head in puzzlement.
Rin: How… how did you know about my cooking?
Mori: Ah, your grandmother wrote about it in her letters to me.
Mori: She wrote that you made delicious dishes in her restaurant, and was of big help to her!
Rin: My grandmother said that?
(So that’s how grandmother talked about me.)
I felt a fuzzy feeling in my heart.
(Mori has had personal contact with grandmother, and if he’s saying this…)
Rin: Can I accept your offer and stay at your place?
Mori: Of course!
Rin: But I’ll feel bad if all I do is help you with things… I’ll definitely find a proper job elsewhere.
Rin: I’m thinking of getting a job as a kitchen assistant at a restaurant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kido: …
Kido was pondering about something while staring at me.
Rin: …?
I tilted my head sideways and he slowly spoke up.
Kido: … Rin. If it's alright with you, how about you work as a service staff for the Meiji Government?

Best Underrated Anime Group D Round 3: #D5 vs #D6
#D5: Three brothers work together to stop an ancient evil
#D6: Most adorable-dork villainess in dating game isekai
Details and poll under the cut!
*D6’s tagline has been changed.
Tumblr media
#D5: Laughing Under the Clouds (Donten ni Warau)
youtube
Summary:
In the 11th year of the Meiji Era, the end of the samurai shogunate and the prohibition of swords has left Japan with lasting scars. Displeased by these recent changes, many former samurai plot against the new government, inciting a wave of bloodshed. To counter this movement, the government constructs a colossal prison in the middle of Lake Biwa.
Unofficially assigned to help the police arrest criminals, Tenka Kumou also serves as a ferryman to the Lake Biwa prison with the help of his two younger siblings: the ambitious Soramaru and the enthusiastic Chuutarou. Together with the former Fuma ninja Shirasu Kinjou, the Kumou brothers live a frugal and joyful life mostly dedicated to studying and training.
However, behind this relatively uneventful daily routine, the specter of the “Orochi” curse is starting to spread its shadow over the city of Oumi. According to legend, every three hundred years, Orochi reincarnates in a human vessel—and it is believed that this is the harbinger of an imminent catastrophe. As various groups clash in search of Orochi’s vessel, some aim to seal the curse, while others have darker plans in motion.
Propaganda:
I found this series absolutely entrancing when I originally watched it, the portrayal of the characters and themes is really interesting to watch.
It tells a fantastic story about trying to defeat a legendary evil that can corrupt those around it to do its biding, all the while mixing in comedy and really heartfelt moments between family. For a 12 episode series they did a really good job of tying up any loose ends and finishing the plot, some things could have been expanded upon a bit more, but for what it is they producers did a wonderful job.
The series might not be the most groundbreaking anime ever, but it does have some lovely moments and explorations of its characters. I really like the themes of family, and wanting to do anything you can to help the people you love, it’s always nice to see and I think it’s done really well in this anime.
Trigger Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Cruelty/Violence/Gore, Suicide.
Tumblr media
#D6: My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! (Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shiteshimatta…)
youtube
Summary:
Most people would prefer being the protagonist of a world full of adventure, be it in a game or in another world. But, unfortunately, a certain girl is not so lucky. Regaining the memories of her past life, she realizes that she was reborn in the world of Fortune Lover—one of the games she used to play.
Unfortunately, the character she was reincarnated into—Catarina Claes—is the game's main antagonist, who faces utter doom in every ending. Using her extensive knowledge of the game, she takes it upon herself to escape from the chains of this accursed destiny.
However, this will not be an easy feat, especially since she needs to be cautious as to not set off death flags that may speed up the impending doom she is trying to avoid. Even so, to make a change that will affect the lives of everyone around her, she strives—not as the heroine—but as the villainess.
Propaganda:
This show is so much fun. The protagonist is a lovable girl himbo, who is completely oblivious to everyone around falling in love with her. It’s a bit of a harem anime, but with equal opportunities: the girls are just as enamored with the main character as the guys are. The increasingly dumber ways in which she thinks she’s going to meet her doom (she is supposed to be the villain of the story, after all) are a delight to behold.
Trigger Warnings: Incest, Rape/Non-Con. The main character gets assaulted like two or three times, but it’s not graphic. One of these instances, where a kiss is forced on her, is by her adoptive brother, who is also her cousin, who is one of her main love interests.

I was lucky to catch this big ring of light emanating out of the sun that was sitting on a cloud like a golden egg.
Positive thing: I handled practicum today, and got Wendy's as a treat.
It was pretty good. I don't think I've had Wendy's in a while but after a long day of practicum it was what I was craving. How do full time counselors find the time to eat at all? I always have to snack my way through.
I just remembered I have Friday completely free this week since the group counseling I help run got canceled, so I'm pretty excited for that. I think I'll run some errands that sorely have been needed (like a car wash, returning some Amazon items, picking up my pottery I finished months ago). I know adulthood has hit me hard when I'm excited for a free day to do errands of all things.
But it really will be nice I think, since I'll be going around town and being somewhere other than the two places I always am (home and campus).
We did this guided imagery exercise in our supervision group today that I surprisingly took to. Basically you sit comfy and close your eyes and someone else verbally walks you through something you visualize. We were guided through imagining what our "safe place" looks like. I have racing thoughts so I didn't think it'd help at all but somehow it did quiet it all down for me. I imagined my bedroom, with my warm blankets and my favorite pillow, and outside was the park I had gone to at Meiji Jingu, with the leaves rustling and feeling the crisp air against my skin. Although it wasn't real I was definitely taken back to the time I had been there in real life.

Continuing the milestone tradition of recommendations!
The Mitarais’ House is on Fire: Thirteen years after her mother takes the blame for their house burning down, Anzu disguises herself as a housekeeper and infiltrates the home of her father’s new wife, a family friend who she believes is responsible for the arson. In her own words, “We had a great deal taken by this woman. I’m taking it back. I’m taking everything back.” But she quickly realizes that as she delves deeper, there are more secrets waiting. And as closely as she watches her target, she’s closely watched in return... This story is absolutely crackling. I love the revenge drama, the smart twists, and the depiction of public vs private life. And I froth at the mouth for a particular dynamic. Now licensed in English and NETFLIX SHOW COMING SOON
Kieli: I read the manga years ago and the light novels have been on my backlog for a while, but I’m glad I finally got around to it. The title is the name of the heroine, a lonely and blasphemous teenager who can see ghosts. Following an encounter with an Undying, an immortalized young man who fought in a bloody war 80 years prior, and his antique radio possessed by one of his victims, they travel the world. For better or worse, considering Undying are being hunted down for their regenerative cores and there are rumors of new experiments. The ending is bittersweet and I choose to read it as a hopeful one; the whole series is certainly memorable and very underrated.
The Jinx’s Lover: I read this one a long time ago and considered recommending it in its early days but I caught up on it again and it’s so good. As a young girl, clairvoyant Seulbi runs from the abusive hold of a wealthy conglomerate for a day and into the arms of kind but poor Sugwang, who soon finds himself shockingly lucky. When the company retrieves her, that luck turns into misfortune for 7 years...until he meets her again in her second escape attempt. It’s pretty funny, and I think it’s good for Kdrama fans!
The Alchemist Who Survived Now Dreams of a Quiet City Life: A light novel series, now completely translated in English! Mariela is the titular alchemist who placed herself in suspended animation during a disaster, only to awaken...200 years later. Unlike in the past, alchemists are extremely rare and in high demand due to the dangers of the nearby Labyrinth, a monster-infested structure that’s proving to be the worst in history. The male lead is a slave she rescues, a former adventurer humbled by the loss of his supernatural eye and is now devoted to her. He saves the labels from wine bottles they drink together, that’s real love!!!
My Blissful Marriage: A light novel as well as a manga about an arranged marriage in a low fantasy Meiji era setting. Miyo is the daughter of a clan with supernatural powers, but when discovered to be utterly mundane, she’s treated no better than a slave by her family. Cue her engagement to an ill-tempered officer rumored to drive away any woman in his presence. Of course, as the days unfold and they learn more about each other, they grow closer. Now licensed in English!
Kimi no Koe: A fairly new Taisho era manga. A young entrepreneur with a telepathic ability uses his skills to work his way up society, including a marriage to an affluent family’s daughter...only to find out that he can’t discern her thoughts at all. And she’s mute. It’s primarily from the guy’s perspective, and he’s kind of a bastard, but a loveable one.
Tsuka no Ma no Ichika: A college student in remission from an unnamed disease reunites with her favorite professor, who’s now terminally ill. A love story, in spite of their impending mortality. It’s nothing but pain. I do wish they would’ve progressed a little further, but it’s a poignant and earnest work about making the most of time you have left.
Sesame Salt and Pudding: Trying to get out of being summoned home, a drunken 22-year-old machinery operator marries one of the older customers in her favorite bar. I mean...it’s a dumb decision, but the heroine is the charming kind of dumb, so she’s actually not as annoying as a lot of characters I’ve seen. The male lead is mellow and sardonic and highkey a dirty old man, but at least, that part of him is honest! They’re cute together, the translation is excellent, and I got hooked.
Marriage of Convenience: This is how you pull off a reincarnation manhwa. A heroine who doesn’t immediately flip personalities and has realistic character development, while still retaining her core traits. A male lead who recognizes his own inadequacies, while still being a badass and an utter simp. The marriage in question starts off with a power imbalance, and the progression to a union of equals is just delicious. The side characters are also very loveable, with funny expressions in the background, and overall, it’s a great binge read.
I’m a Terminal Cancer Patient But I’m Fine: In my line of work, I think it’s good to get perspective. This is a humorous yet honest memoir, written by a mangaka who was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. The explanations are thorough and accurate, interjected with advice and of course, to listen to the medical professionals. The author is also a survivor of childhood physical abuse, so I really admire her resilience and I’m glad she has a good support system, especially from her husband. Although...can some of the hot doctors make it over here...asking for a friend...

hii, not sure if you still check asks on this blog🤡 but I was reading your outline for your rewrite and holy SHIT!
it's so good!! I just got to the party where it's revealed that nakime is/was zenitsu's biological mom (which is so *chefs kiss* btw).
the main reason I'm here tho, is because of this:
She’s only holding his head, and does a whole literal Shakespearean monologue, inspired by Hamlet and the scene with the Prince holding the Skull of Yorick to further emphasize how she triumphed despite her shortcomings. It’s pretty cool, feel free to ask me about it.
So here I am.. asking about it. How did you come up with the idea of a Shakespearean monologue? (unless this is done in the manga which I didn't read) Do you have any drafts of the monologue? 👀
I got you lol. This should be a part of the folder called "part 2", but here's the draft:
Tumblr media
[ID: A written passage. Transcript: “So, everyone died except for Hamlet’s friend, Horatio. The foreign prince of Fortinbras would then swoop in and claim the kingdom of Denmark for themselves. The end.” “That’s... quite a story.” Douma comments. “I heard you mention a poison-tipped blade? That part reminds me of you, my dear.” Then he gasps. “Oh, ooh! Are you trying to say you’re Prince Hamlet, and I’m King Claudius?” “Well, you only wanted me to tell you about it, nothing else.” She smiles widely. “But, if you insist on drawing comparisons, I’ll happily draw my own. “I am the prince, but I am also his wit. His mask. His cup with the poisonous union. His calculated thirst for revenge. But I am also Laertes with his poisoned sword, unabated and envenomed. “Do you see the difference now? My blade has never turned itself on me. I was not defeated by my hesitance. I was not killed by my own treachery. I believed in no gods with qualms against self-slaughter. I knew my faults and made them my strengths. I have won in every way.” Shinobu chuckles. “I apologize if I sound like I’m rubbing my victory in your face. Really, you’re lucky I even stuck around; all the other souls you’ve tricked and lied to moved on without a second thought, without a care for their poor, heartless jester who’s rotten flesh would become earth, and earth to loam, then loam for stopping a cheap beer barrel. You’re not as high and mighty as you think.” Douma gives her a strange, unreadable look as his face slowly rots away. His rainbow eyes scan her expression, but Shinobu knows there’s nothing for him there. Not with the porcelain mask covering her face. End ID.]
I wanted to give Shinobu a unique interest to help her connect more with the world of KNY, especially when the Taisho period is very famous for marking the rapid industrialization and westernization of Japan (apart from the Meiji Restoration period), particularly in the spreading of European literature and arts. She's incredibly intelligent and I knew her family would try to make their kids get into these subjects since they were doctors/pharmacists and probably had money to do so.
Shinobu should also be allowed to be quirky. I headcanon her as autistic and I wanted to show her neurodivergency in a way that integrates well with her arc. Love her so much.

Hello senpai! I hope you're doing well! ^w^ I have a question I'd like to ask you about our local train fan Enmu.
How old do you think he is? Both as a human and as a demon, I mean.
For example, we know that Dōma was 20 when he was turned into a demon, and that the Upper Ranks have gone on without changes for about a century, so Dōma must be at least ~120 years old.
In the Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki it's stated that Enmu is in his "mid to late twenties (physically)", but there is no source to back it up. All we know about his human life is that when he became "an adult" he would misuse hypnotic therapies and convince patients that they had recovered, even though he wasn't really a doctor. So what did "an adult" mean back in that era? Did it mean 18 or 20 years old? Back then, how many years of studying would it take people to become doctors? And finally, how long do you think he lived as a demon? I think I read somewhere that Rui has lived for around 20 years a demon (but I honestly don't remember if it's canon or not), so do you think Enmu has lived more than him?
I apologize for the lengthy post, I meant to make it shorter but then I kept adding things >.< I hope I'm not bothering you or doing anything wrong! Please have a nice day and may the creativity be with you!
Hello, hello! If we discuss the demon age question first, we know it has been 113 years since the Upper Moons were gathered (but we don't know how long they all had been Upper Moons before that, it seems there was some changing of ranks before they all settled into those roles), meaning that if you include their human ages, all the Upper Moons must be at least 130+ or so. Based on flashback context and a few clues of the order in which they became demons, we know for certain that least Douma, Akaza, Hantengu, and Gyutaro & Daki became demons in the Edo era (1603-1867). By a few fashion clues, it's just my sense that Hakuji lived in mid-Edo period or later. As for other demons we can trace to time periods in which they lived, Rui must had been a child of the Meiji Period (1868-1912), based on the attire Muzan wore when he came knocking. My knowledge of Meiji fashion trends is not detailed enough to narrow it down, though. Hairou (Lower Moon 2, whom Rengoku-san defeated in his Gaiden) was a Shinsengumi member, active between 1863 and 1869. The Hand Demon, who consumed about fifty Breath-y children since getting stuck on Mt. Fujikasane, encountered Urokodaki when he was still presumably a young demon back in the Keio Period (part of the Edo era), which was only 1865 to 1868. Hairou and the Hand Demon become demons around the same time, but while the Hand Demon was stuck and developed with what food he had to work with, Hairou was out eating brains and blasting his own out fast enough to reach the upper levels of the Lower Moons. Enmu has a more cautious personality type; he's patient and plays the long term game. This makes me feel he'd have been a demon much longer than Hairou, so I'm willing to assume Enmu also grew up in the Edo era.
As for his human age, most of the facts we have about him come from the booklet handed out as a freebee in the opening showings of the movie in October 2020, which I was lucky enough to get my hands on and translated the Taisho Secrets from it here (the content of which you've referenced in your Ask). On the character profile pages of that booklet we get the heights, birthdates, and ages for each of the main cast (except Akaza who was distinctly excluded from promo material until the movie had been released for a few weeks), and for Enmu, each of these items is defined as "unknown." We don't even have an official canon height for him, but I guess we could look up the sizes of historical trains?
I can't imagine him being much older than Muzan and Douma, so even mid-20's feels far-fetched to me. Most of the cast skews young anyway so as to appeal to the target Shonen Jump audience. If we assume he was an Edo child, let's look at the Edo period for context.
An Edo boy was considered an adult at his Genpuku ceremony, especially noted for this being when a boy would shave the forelocks of his hair style. This ceremony would typically take place around age 15 according to the Kazoedoshi age keeping system, though in the Mannenrei system we're used to now, it'd be closer to age 14. As for becoming a doctor, it become more widely standardized in the Meiji Period and in the Edo era there were qualifications that doctors who served the samurai class needed to meet, but among the commoners, anyone could declare "I'm a doctor" and that was that.
Now, if you declared yourself a doctor and your services sucked, naturally you'd wouldn't get any customers or acclaim, so at least according to this blog post, most people would apprentice for 10~20 years before claiming that title on their own. As doctors were afforded special privileges in society (like being able to ride in palanquins, even through the gates of Yoshiwara where even high-ranking samurai had to get out and walk!), this was a reason many common folk might aim for that, but their success was ultimately up to their skill. Or at least, how convincing they were about their skills.

Day 6: Media Reflection
This post satisfies the Media Reflection requirement for blog posts on free days. When filling my itinerary, I wanted to get away from the Tokyo bubble and see other places. Some finalists included Sapporo, Yokohama (Kanagawa), Nikko, and Saitama. However, I settled on Aomori and the Yokohama Nanohana Festival. The location of the festival is a major real-life location from my favorite anime, Clannad / Clannad After Story. The field of flowers plays a big role in the show and is considered a "sacred place" by fans. In terms of media representation vs. reality, there were some differences and similarities present. Most notably, there was a festival going on which is contrary to what happens in the main episode that the flower fields appear in. One of the big similarities was the episode showcasing the very scenic train ride up Mutsu Bay and into Yokohama. Unfortunately, my stop was at Mutsu-Yokohama Station and not Arihata Station - Arihata Station is the real-life location of the station where the main characters get off the train in the anime. From my own interpretation, the purpose of the anime showcasing the flower fields depends on the context of the episode's plot and what was going on. My Aomori rural trip was an example of anime pilgrimage - a trip where fans of a certain anime visit real-life areas/buildings/places where scenes from the anime were staged/inspired from. For example, some fans head to Saitama to see the real-life locations from Lucky Star or to Toyosato to see the real-life school from the K-On! anime. Usually, towns are aware that they have appeared in a famous anime and will have posters or murals to commemorate it. There are anime pilgrimage sites all over Japan and across many different prefectures, from Aomori and Hokkaido to Tokyo. It is the job of the fans of the series to analyze and find the real life locations. When these locations are found, there is a great sense of accomplishment and nostalgia. I know personally, I really want to visit the real life location of the school hill from Clannad, it's a very meaningful location in the show. My other major activity on my free day was at Meiji Jingu Baseball Stadium to watch the Tokyo Giants face the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. Baseball is super popular in Japan and is featured in a multitude of anime, manga and movies. I felt that the real life baseball game lived up to the hype, there were lots of intense moments, home runs and strikeouts, and plenty of athletic plays. One thing I didn't really see in media that I saw in real life was stadium atmosphere. Meiji Jingu Baseball Stadium was absolutely rocking! A sea of green comprised the crowd except for the left field corner - that was Giants fan territory. There were special chants for each player and fans had noisemakers, towels, umbrellas and more. Ballpark food (and the super large presence of alcohol) is also not mentioned. I got some pretty good yakisoba and karaage. I think anime/manga/media in Japan, when it comes to baseball, tends to focus more on the game from the players perspective than the fans perspective. And honestly, it makes sense - the series has a plot and needs to move it along, and it can't do that if the POV is from a random American foreigner in the crowd and not the star pitcher. I don't think I have ever seen an anime that for a baseball game just sits in the stands and watches the game, chanting players' names while eating karaage and drinking a lemon sour (that drink did a number on my teeth - ouch!). Usually it's centered on one or multiple players, involves their inner monologue, and the only fans they truly involve are those who are close to them (friends/family). My experience at a Japanese baseball game will unfortunately not be like the anime. I have no idea what the pitcher/batter is thinking, nor do I know if their friends/family are in the stands shouting "Ganbatte!!". Still, the game was very very entertaining. Go Go Swallows!
