Stage Dreams by Melanie Gillman
goodreads
Tumblr media
In this rollicking queer western adventure, acclaimed cartoonist Melanie Gillman (Stonewall Award Honor Book As the Crow Flies ) puts readers in the saddle alongside Flor and Grace, a Latinx outlaw and a trans runaway, as they team up to thwart a Confederate plot in the New Mexico Territory. When Flor―also known as the notorious Ghost Hawk―robs the stagecoach that Grace has used to escape her Georgia home, the first thing on her mind is ransom. But when the two get to talking about Flor's plan to crash a Confederate gala and steal some crucial documents, Grace convinces Flor to let her join the heist.
Mod opinion: I haven't read this graphic novel yet, but I've enjoyed As The Crow Flies by the same author a lot.

💜 Other Ever Afters: New Queer Fairy Tales by Melanie Gillman
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Come visit a happily ever after where princes are spurned but monsters are wed, where castles crumble while villages thrive, and where knights lay down their swords only to have peasants pick them up.
Ok, each story I read- from the first “The King’s Forest” to the last “The People’s Forest”- made me unreasonably emotional. There is so much to unpack with each fable. You have older women falling in love, a princess who realizes happiness isn’t about what you have, a knight without a purpose, a young person choosing a new name, and so much more.
My favorite story would have to be “Hsthete”, a tale of a girl who doesn’t want to marry her betrothed and a goddess of mishaps who helps her.
Each story is unique and diverts classic fairy tale tropes into something more powerful and inspiring to the readers. I love a good happy ending and this book is full of them.

Happy Queer Media Monday!
Today: Other Ever Afters: New Queer Fairy Tales by Melanie Gillman
*sigh* I’m back, trying to stay back. This book is awesome.
Tumblr media
Other Ever Afters is a graphic novel that groups together comics originally published online. They are all female-centric queer fairy tales that twist the stories usually told to young girls. They center community over royalty, and the “monsters” are often on the protagonists’ side.
Melanie Gillman is an award-winning artist who has worked on a number of queer comic books, both original fiction and as parts of a franchise. More importantly, you know her stories from social media. What first caught my attention in this book was that it contained two stories I’d seen shared around on Tumblr.
Queer Media Monday is an action I started to talk about some important and/or interesting parts of our queer heritage, that people, especially young people who are only just beginning to discover the wealth of stories out there, should be aware of. Please feel free to join in on the fun and make your own posts about things you personally find important!

Reading Challenge 2024 Book 8/24: Other Ever Afters: New Queer Fairy Tales by Melanie Gillman Rating: 4/5
You've probably seen a story or two from this collection. They're all done in an appealing style and capture that traditional fairy tale feel. They're short, and, for me, the effect from reading them was fleeting, but I thought the whole thing was well produced and pretty cool. I would recommend reading the whole thing if you have only seen one or two segments online.

Other Ever Afters: New Queer Fairy Tales by Melanie Gillman
a book from one of my favorite comic authors here on tumblr, @/melgillman! if you've been around this site for a while, you've likely already seen four of the comics she's published in this book: The Fish Wife, Sweet Rock, Hsthete and The King's Forest. def give this book a read if you liked any of those!!
like all comic anthologies, its comics weren't all made equal. i think the four i listed above stood stronger on their own than the newer works made for this book. working under the limits of an image post count and narrow work time frame (even if gillman didn't follow the 24 hour rule to the letter) means you must maximize telling your story in the most efficient way possible to get it across the nebulous audience of the internet. comics made for a published book don't have those limits, which is why i think the newer works didn't have the same impact on me.
this book was still an enjoyable read regardless, and i'm excited to read more of melanie gillman's future works! she's got a lot more work on her tumblr, so check that out with her book as well.

Ranking Books I Read in 2023: 15-11
15. Hollow - Shannon Watters
Tumblr media
This book was hella cute, not gonna lie. I love the idea they used for the Horseman, because I'm always a sucker for "scary monster that everyone fears is actually warm and squishy". The relationship between the three mains is also just really nice and fun. Wish they would have expanded more on the evil professor (who I think is supposed to be an evil descendant of Ichabod Crane or is Ichabod Crane; unclear), but other than that, it's a fun romp.
14. As the Crow Flies - Melanie Gillman
Tumblr media
It almost feels wrong putting this up here since the story isn't finished yet, but it was published as a book I read, so whatever, here it is. This is really good, I'm excited to see how it turns out. Charlie and Sidney are an adorable pair, and the intersectionality of it all is just chef's kiss. Keep your fingers crossed that Gillman finishes it soon.
13. In the Lives of Puppets - T.J. Klune
Tumblr media
Maybe leaning a bit too heavily on the Pinocchio references, and Victor isn't that interesting of a character, but this is a pretty good one. Lots of great action, lots of heart, and I would die for Nurse Ratched and Rambo.
12. Dark Carnivals: Modern Horror and the Origins of American Empire - W. Scott Poole
Tumblr media
I read almost every word from W. Scott Poole in 2023, and I'm glad I did. This wasn't my favorite (a lot of his points felt rehashed from other works), but that's not saying much when it's still really, really good if you love media analysis. This is also just a really good concept - examining American nationalism and imperialism through the lens of the horror fiction we've produced. Very interesting, very fun.
11. The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness - Michelle Alexander
Tumblr media
An absolute must-read for anyone interested in any kind of social justice, but especially prison abolitionists. A little didactic at times, but too valuable of a resource to really hold that against it. Go read it. Stop what you're doing and read it.

Other Ever Afters' (holiday reading book 10) was was another cute, queer graphic novel. The author has posted a number of them online as a part of various 24 hour comic projects. They're cute stories with fairy tale vibes, and fresh and original plots. This was a very quick read, and each story was short so it was also nice to dip in and out of.

Other Ever Afters - Melanie Gillman
Tumblr media
Once upon a time . . . happily ever after turned out differently than expected. In this new, feminist, queer fairy-tale collection, you’ll find the princesses, mermaids, knights, barmaids, children, and wise old women who have been forced to sit on the sidelines in classic stories taking center stage. A gorgeous all-new collection in graphic novel format from a Stonewall Honor-winning author and artist. What if the giant who abducted you was actually thoughtful and kind? What if you didn’t want to marry your handsome, popular, but cold-inside suitor? What if your one true love has all the responsibilities that come with running a kingdom?
