So, it’s no surprise that Julie and I enjoy reading mangas. Despite being picky readers, we are voracious ones as well. Willing to read whatever pops up in a manga app and willing to try out a new story (believe it or not). So when I spotted a new addition called Last Menhealer, I was curious and in disbelief. Is menhealer a new term for the manic pixie dream girl? I tapped it and was treated with an immediate translation of the word... said word spelling trouble thanks to the rather oddly worded definition the translator gave:

Okay! So we know our follows quite well and that anything that has the word “yandere” triggers our brains like fire alarms with smoke. So we’re going to jump to gun before anyone shot us a message:

Menhealer is not a new type of yandere or an off-shoot of it. Just like the Undere scenario, it’s just something that “sounds yandere-like” when it’s not. Undere is literally just a “yes-man” and Menhealer translates to “someone with mental illness” (Or more literal: “A user of mental health boards/forums).

We understand where the translator is coming from and why they said “comparable to yanderes”. After all, yanderes are an archetype that stems from mentally ill/unstable characters. But we have to understand that not all mental illness is the same. Menhealer is more of a “general” or “catch-all” term for all types of mental illness while yanderes can be more zeroed in on antisocial personality disorder or borderline personality disorder. Again, we want to emphasis that yanderes are still a fictional trope and it doesn’t (always) perfectly fit either of those two disorders. Never go to a person who’s actually suffering from either of these disorders (or any mental illness for that matter) and go “UwU my cute yandere bean” to them. It just so happens that these disorders are close fits. 

The translator just said it just to help us better understand. But truth be told, we think the inclusion of the first sentence makes it harder to understand / make it easier to misunderstand the definition of the word. If they strictly stated the definition as we read above without the “That is comparable to yandere”, it would still make a lot of sense. Hell, it would be 10x easier to comprehend. To counter anyone who may take the translator’s definition for face value; the same translator equated (”similar”) tsunderes and self-harming/cutting in a definition only a couple pages away from the first:

It’s commendable that the translator is sharing this manga with us but uh... I don’t think the comparisons are necessary for such straightforward definitions. Especially if the thing being compared would just confuse readers. 

And before anyone wonders: doesn’t seem like a (female) yandere story. But who knows these days? *shrug*
