December 9th this song (“When Love is Gone”) is back in the version of the movie streaming on Disney +!
I didn’t love the song growing up. I thought Mighty Ducks was cinema. I don’t know what to tell you. But then two things happened:
1. After I saw “Phantom” in live in San Francisco for the first time…I was seeing Christines everywhere. My family understandably told me to settle down but here’s the thing, was I wrong in this case? NO I WAS NOT. Meredith Braun hive rise. Had she played Christine at the time I was hollering about this? That’s actually not important, what’s important is that eventually I was right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. I got old (I did a self-ageism 🥲 don’t @ me) and changed my mind. It just feels off without it. It’s some truly wonderful acting from Michael Caine and never forget that he’s doing all this surrounded by people with foam creatures on their hands. I know many people KNOW the story but if you’re watching through it’s a pretty significant emotional beat that is almost entirely eliminated. Yes this is a thing I care about as an adult.
3. Cast a whole Christine Daaé and then eliminate her song? Clownery…
Anyway. This delights me. I don’t see another adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” unseating this as my favorite and it has remained my favorite holiday fiLme for a long time now, so. Just a nice thing to find out in the middle of my work week. I’d heard something about it last year but happy to see it’s finally being put back in.
Now back to making untoward edits…

With it getting closer to the holidays, and the announcement of Disney+ adding the version of Muppet Christmas Carol with When Love is Gone, I figured I’d share this article I found, for people like me who don’t have D+!
I haven’t bought the DVD here (sent it to my mom as a Christmas present idea lol), but the article seems recent enough. It’s from last year, but the link still works, and I can’t imagine Amazon would’ve changed the content of the DVD in a year.

Top 12 Portrayals of Belle (from "A Christmas Carol")
Tumblr media
Last time I talked about the first of the ghosts Scrooge encounters in “A Christmas Carol.” Before we get to our final three characters for this little marathon - those being the Three Spirits of Christmas - I want to take a brief pit-stop in Scrooge’s past to talk about another major supporting character: Ebenezer’s ex-fiance, Belle. Belle is by far the single most well-known and important figure in Scrooges past, by all accounts. I can think of versions of the Carol story that omit his sister, Fan. I can also think of versions that omit the bubbly Fezziwig. These are not to mention all the various minor characters, such as Dick Wilkins or the Headmaster. But while many version inexplicably change the character’s name (she’s been alternately called Isabelle, Alice, and Emily, just to name three examples), no version of the Carol DARES to omit Scrooge’s former love. It’s the loss of Belle in Scrooge’s past life that acts as the straw that breaks the proverbial camel’s back. She isn’t by any means the reason he became the greedy old codger he is by the time the story begins, but the pain of losing her is perhaps the deepest wound Scrooge has in his heart. What’s interesting about this wound is that Scrooge loses her through his own fault, and this is part of what makes the character so impactful, and her part in the tale such an important element: throughout Scrooge’s past, he sees past nuggets of love and humanity that he held onto, such as Fan and Fezziwig…but it’s indicated, in all those cases, they are people he lost early on, who died before their time. Belle is another story: she was THERE for him. She was FINE. It is Scrooge’s own greed and ambition that pushed her away; he was caught between two worlds - a humble but happy life with uncertainties to face, but love in his heart…or clinging to material gain that he believed would give him security. Scrooge chose the latter, and as a result, while he’s financially successful…he’s not truly happy, and he’s racked with guilt and longing that he can never admit or let go of. When compiled on top of all the other tragedies in his past, many of which seem directly related to Christmastime, it’s no wonder that he not only hates the Christmas holiday, but also has become such a vile person. As a result, Belle is the one part of his past that every interpretation wisely holds onto: some versions restrain her role to simply the breakup moment, while others expand on the novel, including not only a bit of what happened to her after, but also what came before, to up the sorrow. However it is handled, the scene is always one of the most potent in the story, and one of the most heartbreaking. Many fine actresses have handled the role of the former fiance over the years, and many of them have done a splendid job. Who did so the best? I have no idea, but here’s some that I like. Ha Ha. These are my Top 12 Favorite Portrayals of Belle! (Again, the character’s name is sometimes different, but all of these are recognizably the same character.)
Tumblr media
12. Bea Benaderet, from the Campbell Playhouse Radio Production (1939). (My thanks to a friend for helping me identify the uncredited actress for Belle.)
Tumblr media
11. Zoe Wanamaker, from A Christmas Carol (1977).
Tumblr media
10. Daisy Duck, from Mickey's Christmas Carol.
Tumblr media
9. Meredith Braun, from The Muppet Christmas Carol. (This only really applies to the original director’s cut of the film, with the song sequence “When Love is Gone” included.)
Tumblr media
8. Jane Kean, from Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol. (Silly hair notwithstanding.)
Tumblr media
7. Suzanne Neve, from Scrooge (1970).
Tumblr media
6. Jodi Benson, from A Christmas Carol (1997). (By far the best scene in the film is Ariel and Tim Curry singing a duet as Belle and Young Scrooge.)
Tumblr media
5. Jessie Buckley, from Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022). (This version is pretty “meh,” but it’s perhaps telling that the stuff with Belle is, by far, the best part, in my opinion.)
Tumblr media
4. Robin Wright, from A Christmas Carol (2009).
Tumblr media
3. Rona Anderson, from Scrooge (1951).
Tumblr media
2. Laura Fraser, from A Christmas Carol (1999). (Don’t ask me what Lydia from Breaking Bad is doing here. Your guess is as good as mine.)
Tumblr media
1. Lucy Gutteridge, from A Christmas Carol (1984).

I was looking for an expert opinion, so I was looking for you. So...It is possible that we get a Christine who played Eponine too? I only know Meredith Braun who played Christine and Eponine. I always wondering why the production usually choose an actress who played Cosette.
The same with the actors who played Javert. A lot of posibilities :c
I think there's been several more Eponines who have played Christine, and vice versa. Meredith Braun is one, but Mercedesz Csampai is another, as well as Kristin Holck, Katie Knight Adams, and AJ Callaghan (though she also played Cosette and Fantine).
The reason why Cosettes become Christines (and vice versa) is pretty simple though: the similarity in vocal type and role. Cosette calls for a classical soprano voice who falls into the ingenue role (young, innocent, virginal, often a love interest); Christine also calls for a classical or operatic soprano who is young, naive, and the love interest of the Phantom and Raoul. Eponine, on the other hand, is more of a belt role, and while there are classical sopranos who can also belt, it's not as common as, well, finding a classical soprano among the actresses playing Cosette.
And I think it's the same with Javert; the role calls for a baritone with some fairly low notes, whereas the role of the Phantom asks for a high baritone, baritenor, or tenor, so for a lot of Javert actors, the role of the Phantom might be a bit too high for them to comfortably sing (case in point: Earl Carpenter in his first run, who acted the hell out of Javert and the Phantom but who did struggle singing those high notes, and still does, though he's shown a lot of improvement since). So it's easier, and more common, to find your Phantoms among the Valjeans, the Mariuses (Marii?), and the Enjolrases (Enjolrai?), who are all more high baritone roles.
And that's musical theater casting for you, I suppose.

I'm so happy that on December 11, the complete version of The Muppet Christmas Carol, including the song "When Love is Gone," is going to be added to Disney+.
That song has been missing from the movie for too long! I grew up with it on the original VHS and early DVD releases, and the more recent DVD/Blu-Ray and streaming releases have felt all too incomplete without it. Yes, I know some people consider it a boring song, but that's very much a matter of taste. And I understand why it was cut – its a slow ballad dealing with emotions that little kids can't relate to, and it tests their attention spans. "Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz and "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid were both almost cut for similar reasons. Still, any child older than six should understand "Belle and young Scrooge were in love, but now she's leaving him because he's become greedy, and this is why old Scrooge is all alone in the world." Even if they can't relate to it, they should sympathize. And the idea that it's "too sad for kids" is nonsense – if that's the justification, then the scene of the Cratchits mourning Tiny Tim's death should have been cut too!
Not only is the song beautiful, but without it, the scene of Belle and young Scrooge's breakup loses all its emotional impact. The dialogue that precedes it isn't enough, because it cuts the more emotional lines from the scene in the book. Without the song, Rizzo's crying and Gonzo's sniffling afterwards seem like overreactions. But with the song, it makes perfect sense for the Muppets as well as old Scrooge to be moved to tears.
Besides, Meredith Braun (Belle) is a musical theatre actress, whose vocal chops have let her play such roles as Éponine in Les Misérables, Christine in The Phantom of the Opera, Lily in The Secret Garden, and Maria in The Sound of Music. It's a waste to include her in the movie and not let her sing!

Updated stream list
I've been getting a lot of questions/requests regarding possible streams and thought it might be helpful to catalog everything we've watched so far! I'll keep it pinned and updated moving forward.
Longtime crowd favorites (streamed at least three times) are marked with a single asterisk.
Why isn’t [specific actor/video] on this list?
The video is currently marked not for trade.
We haven’t gotten to it yet.
The footage does not exist or is too incomplete.
It isn't on a platform I can stream it from.
There's something particularly off-putting about the video or actor.
How can I get a copy of a video listed here?
There's a list of publicly available bootlegs here, and there are many other adaptations on the Phantom Retrospective channel. Otherwise, contact @glassprism (or another trader) for a possible trade, or check her website for info on which master(s) to contact.
For general stream info, please see the Saturday Streams FAQ.

Actors who appear in adaptations of both "Les Misérables" and "A Christmas Carol"
Because of course there's some overlap. Just for fun I thought I’d list them.
Fredric March: Jean Valjean in the 1935 Hollywood film/Scrooge in the 1954 TV Christmas Carol
Frank Finlay: Jean Valjean in the 1967 BBC miniseries/Marley’s Ghost in the 1984 TV Christmas Carol with George C. Scott
Angela Pleasance: Fantine in the 1978 British film/The Ghost of Christmas Past in the 1984 TV Christmas Carol with George C. Scott
Caroline Langrishe: Cosette in the 1978 British film/nephew Fred’s wife Janet in the 1984 TV Christmas Carol with George C. Scott
Meredith Braun: Éponine in the London and UK Tour productions of the musical, 1992-93/Belle in The Muppet Christmas Carol, 1992
Dominic West: Jean Valjean in the 2018 BBC miniseries/nephew Fred in the 1999 TV Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart
Fra Fee: Courfeyrac in the 2012 musical film/voice of nephew Fred (or rather Harry, as he’s renamed) in the 2022 animated Scrooge: A Christmas Carol
Olivia Colman: Mme. Thénardier in the 2018 BBC miniseries/voice of the Ghost of Christmas Past in the 2022 animated Scrooge: A Christmas Carol
Johnny Flynn: Félix Tholomyés in the 2018 BBC miniseries/voice of Bob Cratchit in the 2022 animated Scrooge: A Christmas Carol
And 2004's A Christmas Carol: The Musical features many veterans from productions of Les Mis on the West End stage.
Claire Moore (Mrs. Fezziwig): Fantine in 1993, Mme. Thénardier in 2006
Ruthie Henshall (Scrooge's mother): Fantine in 1992 and in the 1995 10th Anniversary Concert
Linzi Hately (Mrs. Cratchit): Éponine in 1988 (and the prerecorded voice of Éponine’s scream from then on), Mme. Thénardier in 2012, and a “Turning” woman in the 2012 film
Gay Soper (Charwoman #1 at the Royal Exchange): Mme. Thénardier in 1988 and on the Complete Symphonic Recording
Jenny Galloway (Charwoman #2 at the Royal Exchange): Mme. Thénardier many times
Dave Willetts (one of the charity solicitors): Jean Valjean in London 1988-1993, and in Australia, 1997-1998
There are more too (if I'm not mistaken, the actor who plays Young Marley was understudying Marius in London at the time), but these are all the names I can think of.
And two more indirect Christmas Carol connections from the 1967 BBC Les Misérables:
Michele Dotrice (Fantine): wife of Edward Woodward, the Ghost of Christmas Present in the 1984 TV Christmas Carol with George C. Scott.
Eileen Moore (Mme. Victurnien): wife of George Cole, Young Scrooge in the 1951 Scrooge with Alastair Sim
If anyone can think of any more, please let me know!

The Clowns / I Clowns (1970)
[letterboxd | imdb | kanopy (US)]
Synopsis: Fellini delves into the world of European clowning, traveling with his crew to various capitals of clown culture. From a dramatization of his own challenging childhood experience with clowns to a barrage of performances by current clowns (in a variety of unique venues) and recreations of historical circus-based acts, Fellini creates a dizzying comedic portrait of an artform struggling to survive. (CW/TW: blackface, as seen in one recreation of a historical act.)

This month, I watched a silly amount of silent comedy shorts because I’m reading Steve Massa’s Slapstick Divas and wanted to sort of watch along. I put together a little list of some of the highlights in case you all are also interested in the women of early silent comedy: “‘Film Comedy’s Eves’ Watchalong”
The next installment of Lost but Not Forgotten is a doozy, but it’ll be up very soon! In the meantime, I made a gifset of a few surviving minutes of A Lover’s Oath (1925).
Other themed gif and still sets I put together this month include:
Out of the Unknown: 1.01 No Place Like Earth (1965)

Eleven P.M. (1928)
Tumblr media
The Ghost Ship (1943)

For March, I’ve got a little cosplay in the works in addition to the next entry in my LbNF series. So stay tuned!
