Bobcraft

It's now been close to a year since development on Bobcraft halted to a stop due to issues that were difficult to control.

Bobcraft, of-course, was my Minecraft clone. It was an attempt to recreate, as best I could, Minecraft 1.2.5. Only issue is, I used the Minetest Engine.

I've always loved 1.2.5, I think it's one of the best versions with just the right amount of cruft. Sadly time has been unfair to the game, it's ripe with bugs and oddities, and I thought it'd be a neat idea to try making my own clone to alleviate these issues. It was simple enough, find a voxel engine (Minetest already in my head) and get to work. Within days I had this;

And the project was going ahead fine. I was cranking out the mechanics and blocks like nobody's business, getting everything in working order. All the while, learning how to use Minetest. Things were going fine, Minetest has a really nice and workable API. Some things were off about Minetest, and I'd found that from the get-go.

Something that did, and forever will, irk me is the sounds. Sounds are played by their name - which is their file name. You have to play raw filenames. If you wanted variation, you'd create "sound.0.ogg" & "sound.1.ogg" and the engine would randomize between them. There was no way to specify random pitch variations, so if you wanted that, you'd have to have separate files for them. A slight solution for not being able to store definitions of sound events were to have helper functions that would return a table, you can see that here with "node_sound_planty".

Another thing that irked me was how assets themselves were handled. Minetest is, at the core, a mod-based system. Every mod must include their assets as a sub-directory and place them there. However, I think it's severely mis-handled. By convention, your assets are called _whatever.png - this is because Minetest will blindly put all the assets globally, for every mod. If you had dirt.png, it will trample any other dirt.png. I abused this fact to have all my assets in a centralized place for Bobcraft, but it also made it blindingly incompatible with the entire rest of the Minetest ecosystem.

Additionally, the default world generators don't care about biomes, or when they do, you don't get control of them. Take for example this seed, two different minetest games loaded (Bobcraft & MineClone), and see how despite us both choosing different biomes, we can't affect the world generation in the slightest.

And the only way to make a custom world generation is by applying some on-chunk-created callbacks for an empty worldgen preset.

As much as I'd like to blame all of the issues of Bobcraft on Minetest, I have to admit a lot of it was me. For example, for the first few weeks (keep in mind most of Bobcraft happened in February 2021) of development I decided to not use any external dependencies, or if I were to use them, they had to be public domain. That led to me creating (questionable legality) clones of those existing libraries just so I could add features.

A lot of it was still minetest though.

Bobcraft died hard when I was discovering all these issues. I quickly abandoned development and started working on my own solution, that didn't use Minetest at all. I dubbed it VoxelThingYeah, and it's a story for another time.
