The Rewrite of Fairy Tail: Bonus (What If? #17)

What if Mirajane beat Azuma?

Finally! After all these crazy scenarios that involve an insane amount of foresight and background info, it's nice to have an idea that requires a simple set of circumstantial knowledge. No doubt this has some far-reaching side effects. However, the only real part of the scenario that matters is the scenario itself. And we have a real interesting fight to consider now.

As fun as the Erza and Azuma fight was, it's worth remembering that there was a fight involving Azuma, Mirajane, and Lisanna earlier on in the arc. Unfortunately, they lose and Mira is taken out for the rest of the arc. Azuma didn't seem to be too happy about his win against Mira either.

The way to change this fight's circumstances is simple. In canon, Mira was incapacitated after trying to protect Lisanna from an explosion. You can already guess what I'm going to suggest. In our scenario, Mirajane continues to focus on fighting Azuma and ignores the impending explosion. I know that sounds cruel and it's almost absolutely out of character for Mirajane, especially at this point in the series. But follow along with me for a bit, I know what I'm doing.

Mirajane, in this scenario, gets motivated to fight based on two equally important ideas. At first, she fights Azuma thinking that if she can beat him, the spell that's holding Lisanna will break. Unfortunately, she's not so lucky. The explosion goes off with Lisanna inside. (Stay with me now.)

Now, she's motivated by revenge. She wants to destroy the man that's responsible for separating her from Lisanna again. Remember, this is the arc after Edolas. They were just reunited, and now this happens. She's going to be out for blood. This motivation proves to be enough to defeat Azuma. Part of this might involve breaking out the Halphas transformation we only got in the anime. At any rate, she taps into a similar well of rage and strength used to beat Freed in the Fantasia arc. (Berserker Mira, anyone?)

However, she snaps out of it. For one, she is a member of Fairy Tail. (The series cast and the guild.) Killing isn't a part of their modus operandi. Even if it was, what's the point? It's not as if wailing on Azuma will bring Lisanna back.

Or so she thinks.

See, Lisanna was thinking ahead of Azuma's plan. She realizes she's able to use magic. Before the explosion, she uses the state of distraction to transform into an Animal Soul that will help her survive the explosion and hide from Azuma. Once the fight is over, she reunites with Mirajane, and everyone is happy.

What? Do you honestly think I'd go through the trouble of bringing Lisanna back to kill her for real? Who do you think I am?

This is fun because it gives us yet another awesome Mirajane fight. While arguably the most prominent of her siblings, it isn't as if she wasn't passed on for times to shine. While her situation is fairly reasonable, she would definitely benefit from one more fight. And it gives us a great segway into the Halphas form if we decided to use it.

Not to mention, going through with this scenario means Mirajane can help fight for the rest of the arc. She might be a bit too weakened to help with Master Hades. But she might have more than words to give Rustyrose for hurting her brother. Not to mention, she'd absolutely help with the concurrent fights against Kain and the other members of Grimoire Heart as the Strongest Team fights Hades.

Lisanna isn't the focus of this idea, but it's cool to see how she benefits from this scenario. Mashima didn't do a whole lot involving new Animal Souls for Lisanna post-Edolas. We got a few, but most of them don't end up being used in creative ways. This is one way to change that a bit.

Though, I have some reasons not to go through with this scenario when rewriting Tenrou. I can't speak to why Mashima didn't do many things. But I'd like to think one reason things play out the way they do is that Lisanna couldn't use magic while trapped. The actual battle didn't involve an explicit condition that particularly prevented the use of magic from inside the bomb. But Mashima may have had a reason not to explicitly make that clear. (Read: I'm willfully delusional.)

On Mira's side, it wasn't just a matter of not being strong enough to beat Azuma. One of the big issues was that she was too tired from the earlier fight with Elfman and Evergreen to keep up Satan Soul to beat Azuma. Remember that Mira's only just got back into using magic recently. That's not something that would be an arbitrary fix. That actually makes sense to have the canon outcome.

But that's all minor stuff, right? I could just write a bit more training for Mira. If she knows she has to get ready for this exam, she'll want to make it a challenge to make it past her. (Not that it matters, considering how she gets beaten in canon.) And Mashima didn't mention the condition for Lisanna, so it's not impossible to change that. I could make this happen, right?

There is one big issue for this fight that does matter. If you remember, one of the big problems with Fairy Tail I have is that there was not a lot of training. This arc served as a sign that all the characters had room to grow. And with other events in the series, that becomes more obvious. That's one of the best aspects of this arc.

We get that in this fight as Mira is forced to realize she isn't strong enough to beat some enemies with her current strength. Lisanna is forced to pick up the slack and fight a few people in the anime. When Erza actually fights Azuma, this serves as a shift in her midset of strength. It also serves as a sign of her own weakness. There's a reason this is the arc she and Gray talk about always needing to be saved.

And so we all know Mira wasn't mad at Elfman for Lisanna. And we know that Kid Mira was cocky. So thus I bring the idea of: Mira got Satan Soul: Halphas when she was a child and lost control just like Elfman. Who shouldn't of been able to perform a full take over spell on that monster.

And Mira lost control and went on a rampage (hint: the village) & being forbidden from using it again.

Mirajane parts that don't add up

Ok so Mirajane as many of you know is a former S class mage but after losing Lisanna she loses that rank and doesn't use her satan soul magic again for two years.

When see her use it again in the fight against Freed after she witness him torturing Elfman.

Seeing her younger brother being tortured, brought back memories of Lisanna's death.

One of the reasons she snapped was obviously because she couldn't lose her brother too right?

But what if this caused her to completely re live the fight she had against the monster that Elfman had absorbed?

Mirajane had clearly suffered immense Ptsd after witnessing"Elfman kill Lisanna". So seeing something similar happen again caused her to have a anger out burst that caused her to do a fullbody take over spell.

How did she acquire her she devil forms?

She has 5 forms that we know of.

She has her standard satan soul that we first see when she fights against Freed

Her Halphas form that she used against Mary

Sitri prior to her Alegria form was considered her strongest she devil form.

Sheila form this is also one of the onky demon forms that we know the origins of.

And finally her current strongest form that she possesses her Alegria form.

Now the only thing we know about take over magic is that it allows you to take control and absorb a entity that is linked with the type of take over magic you use.

So my question is were did Mira find all these demons? (Satan soul,Halphas and Sitri)?

Plus clearly Mashima didn't give the timeline a thought because...

For two years Mirajane didn't use her take over magic. However while Mira is fighting against Mary in the neo oracion seis arc Elfman tells Lisanna that the Halphas form was forbidden from being used by master Makarov. So my question is when did Mira use this form? Elfman says she destroyed a entire village but there were no mentions of it ever before?

The magic counsel or hell anyone in fairy tail would have talked about it...

The other time this happens is in the Jenny vs Mira battle. Erza clearly knows about the Sitri form but everone else just looked terrified when they saw it.

So theory time!

Personally I think Mirajane might have left the guild for a few months to mourn.

She traveled alone and somewhere on her travels had a run in with a demon (Halphas) she fought used up nearly all her magic energy to defeat it and used tge last bit of magic to use "take over" on the demon.

She returned to the guild but due to the emotional and trauma she went through, her magic took much longer to return. Thus she only used transformation magic.

Sitri, she and Erza had to go on a job, and they have to get rid of this demon thats been destroying the village. Eventually they track down the demon and try to fight it, only Mirajanes satan soul isn't working so she uses her Halphas form. And she destroys the village and absorbs Sitri. The villagers choose to stay quiet because they know the magic council would go after Mirajane...

And that's how Erza knows about Sitri.

So thats me trying to make sense of the whole Mirajane thing what do you think?

under the cut is a full explanation of each demon takeover spell mirajane can preform. including her abilities in the form, how she came across each form & the impact/personality of the demon soul itself, as well as it’s views on mira. there are six souls in total. ( as well as curse souls - which will be explained below ) if you’re confused about the basics of my interpretation of takeover magic, please refer to this headcanon. please read this it took me like 8 fucking hours to finish.

SATAN SOUL

MIRAJANE’S first ever demon soul & the awakening of her magical abilities. she encountered this soul when she was 13. what she absorbed was merely a fragment - as the soul had been lying dormant for decades prior to mira’s accidental bonding with it. but it was still very powerful. because of this, as well as her own inexperience, mira struggled with controlling it at first. overwhelmed by the dark urges she was suddenly experiencing as well as the physical aspect of it - mira had a difficult time at first. but she grew into satan soul && it really became a part of her. while there’s no real coherent voice behind satan soul, as all mira had was an old fragment, the soul still communicates with her through feeling. it’s formed a protectiveness over mirajane that’s unrivaled among her ‘collection’. because of the depth of this bond - satan soul is the most seamless for mirajane. she is able to use it’s partial form with little-to-no effort, sometimes she does this without trying to simply because she’s angry &&& doesn’t really worry about it being able to overwhelm her. it is her at this point.

THE full takeover does eat up a lot of magical energy, however. less than her others do though. plus it’s a reliable form - seeing as how satan soul tends to be powerful enough to not only defeat most people she encounters, but crush them. the average gang of bandits don’t stand a chance against satan soul & mirajane knows it. it’s even strong enough that she can hold her own in a fight with real opponents using satan soul.

MAGICALLY she can also exercise darkness magic while in this form - as the demon soul she bonded with used it before they died. if you’d like to know exactly what she can do in satan soul, feel free to refer to this page. as it’s shown enough in canon material that i don’t feel the need to really explain it here.

THE transformation changes her physical appearance quite drastically - more so than I believe canon suggests. In the partial takeover, all that really changes is her face && hands. her lips turn black, but when touched something similar to ash flakes off of them. her teeth are sharper. the crack across the left side of her face is the skin there breaking apart &&& actually looks quite like this picture, except the blood is black rather than red. ( do not click the link if any gore, even mild, makes you uncomfortable! ) the color of her eyes go from clear, bright blue to a darker blue with a defined ring of red around her pupils. her finger nails become black as well - something she can hide if wearing nail polish - & also quite pointed. not quite claws but certainly noticeable. as far as actual abilities go, she’s stronger && faster than usual in the partial takeover. but no where near what she is in the full takeover.

NOW it’s important to note that because of how advanced mira is with this form, she is capable of existing in between the partial &&& full takeover. meaning she can control exactly what changes & what doesn’t.

HER full takeover is much more intense. while all the changes of the partial takeover also occur, there are more. the most intimidating of which, is perhaps just the aura of magic that she radiates in this form. she’s deadly. her fingers grow into claws, her teeth become fangs. a tail sprouts, with hard sharp edged scales. they will cut someone upon contact. she as fully functioning wings.

SITRI SOUL

SITRI soul was mira’s second demon soul merger & while it was not as traumatic as her first it was certainly harder to get a handle on. while mira && her satan soul grew into one another - sitri came in demanding to be in full control.

ENCOUNTERING sitri soul out of curiosity more than anything - mirajane had ventured out to some known places where demons were rumored to have died. before coming across sitri she had explored seven different sites with no results. the souls there either simply not there or too far faded for mira to have reached. but then, in a cavern system said to have once been connected to a now dead volcano - mira met sitri.

AGAIN this time the bond was more voluntary - but mira still wasn’t quite sure what to expect. there wasn’t a lot of information on demon takeover out there - so she was pretty much flying blind. but sitri, once again, wasn’t a soul that possessed an understandable voice. choosing to communicate through feelings like her satan soul.

SITRI’S feelings, however, were much stronger. they were more violent, more destructive, more demonic. while adjusting to sitri mira had a really hard time separating her feelings from sitri’s. she was a teenage girl - already volatile enough without the addition of two demons influence. a rather large portion of “Demon Mirajane’s” worst moments had a lot to do with sitri.

WHEN using this takeover mira grows in size. she becomes broader &&& taller. a horn-like material protrudes from her face, framing it in a way that looks quite gruesome in person. as you can see where they meet her human skin & it isn’t pretty. she’s got the default enhancements on strength, speed && durability.

MAGIC wise - sitri allows her to use a range of fire-related spells while being fire-proof herself. she’s able to conjure large amounts of flames as well as use jets of fire from her feet to allow herself to fly.

HALPHAS SOUL

THIS is a soul where my headcanons take a definitive turn from the canon material. the halphas is only featured in the anime & to be honest i’m mostly using that as loose inspiration rather than seriously taking into account what the anime portrayed.

HALPHAS was third soul mira came across ( && the last one before lisanna’s “death” ) she met this soul fragment because she sought it out. she’d heard murmurings of a resting place for some ancient demon experiencing odd phenomenons. the tomb was deep in a mountains valley - near ongoing construction to create a road going through the mountain range. upon arriving - mira was certain that the legends were in fact true &&& that the commotion had disrupted what was left of the demons soul. bonding with halphas was...an experience.

MERGING was simple enough - but mira had difficulties with halphas itself. the demon was the most coherent of the three mira had at the time ( having been quite powerful when it was alive ) & demanded a lot of attention to keep under control at first. over time though, halphas did settle down somewhat. lying more dormant - but still encouraging mira towards destructive behaviors whenever the chance arises.

IN this form mira is VERY fast. so fast that it actually tends to be unnessacary. along with the other basic physical boosts, strength, durability, etc. the real power that comes into play, however, affects her voice. making everything she says come out in a magically-induced tone that’s deafening to anyone that can hear it. including allies.

THE scales that grow on her face are the same as her horns, in that they are hard, dry && rough. the tail she develops is similar to that of a lizards &&& the edges on her wings are distinctly shaped enough to be quite sharp.

MIRA tries not to use halphas unless she really needs to. as it always acts out for weeks after use - halphas is too bratty & not practical enough to be a soul she regularly uses. despite that though, halphas actually kind of likes mira. in a ‘i’m amused by you’ sort of way.

KUSU SOUL

MIRA had just encountered this soul before the tenrou arc.

KUSU is aggressive, territorial & easily offended. kusu has a distinct voice within mira’s head, of the same caliber as halphas, but resembles an animal more than a human. honestly kusu, despite the initial disturst && malice it came in with has grown possessive over mira. getting very upset when anything threatens her safety. for the most part - mira is able to separate herself from kusu due to the animalistic urges being so obvious.

WHEN using this takeover - mira’s surrounded by low burning fire. it’s in her hair, on her clothes, etc. her ears resemble fire-covered bird wings. out of all her takeovers - kusu is the least taxing on her magic.

ANOTHER soul with fire-based magic, but in the kusu form mira’s control of fire is much more precise. she’s able to make shapes out of it, it burns hotter than halphas - but she can’t summon large quantities of it. in comparison to her other souls, kusu is not especially useful in battle. it’s too easily distracted && is skittish by nature &&& fights more for survival than for efficiency - so mira tends not to bring kusu out for fights because of this.

VISUALLY mira grows to resemble a kitsune fox. her tail is equal parts fur &&& flame that scorches & her ears are alight as well. her teeth grow fanged & her skin is hot to the touch. while it could be argued that this soul is the easiest to look at of all her takeovers - there is something keenly upsetting about how her features morph into something more foxlike. like staring down the eyes of a predator.

SANDA SOUL

MEETING sanda right after the grand magic games, mira hasn’t had too much time to really get familiar with it’s uses - having chosen to spend the time between merging with sanda & the tartaros arc bonding with sanda more personally. something that ends up being a very good choice - as preparation for sayla

WITH a growing wisdom && the beginnings of an understanding of her own limits - Mira took it slow with sanda. sanda is a fairly old soul, so there aren’t any clear words from, just feelings that vary in intensity. with sanda, mirajane took up mediating - communicating through emotions volleyed back &&& forth while maintaining the form.

SANDA once again has a clear personality, though it’s far more self-destructive in nature than any other soul mira has acquired. sanda pushes mira towards the pitfalls of self-loathing && is attracted to reckless, dangerous activities that cope with those feelings.

NOT especially violent towards others, mira finds sanda difficult to deal with. she’s used to repressing urges to hurt other people, less so towards herself. mira already experiences a lot of guilt, self-doubt && shame for who she “truly” is - so sometimes sanda is particularly hard to distinguish from herself.

VISUALLY, in this form mira begins to resemble what is almost thunder-bird esque look. her features grow much more aviary in nature, her bones feel lighter ( they’re delicate as well! ) & she has wings as well as the beginnings of talons from her fingers.

AS far as magic goes - mira is able to use certain lightning-based spells while in this takeover. she certainly has not explored the full extent of where her limits lie - but sanda is definitely a long-range soul. physically, sanda is rather delicate, with bones && flesh that are easily broken. she’s magically resistant, but any &&& all physical damage is taken hard.

SAYLA SOUL

THE worst of mira’s souls. sayla is almost completely conscious in mira’s mind & very powerful. sayla’s presence stirs up trouble, not only from sayla herself but from most other demon souls mira has collected along the years as well. she’s cruel, volatile && pushing for control with such strength that mira is deeply struggling to keep up.

BECAUSE of how direct the absorption was - when mira takes this form she is taking on sayla’s complete appearance. as well as sayla’s abilities, though dulled to an extent. meaning that mira can use the macro curse.

HONESTLY - there’s so much I have to say about this, the affect it has on mira’s health &&& her life that I’ll just stick to this summary for right now & make a separate headcanon focusing solely on sayla some other day.

ALRIGHT so that does it for mirajane’s demon souls. wherein the souls she bonded with were once conscious living beings. so, what follows are what mirajane refers to as a “curse soul.” something that she discovered in the aftermath of the battle of tartaros. while she was unable to merge herself with all the deceased demons left on the field after absorbing sayla - she discovered that she was compatible with the essence of curses some of them had left behind. again, she couldn’t withstand bonding to all of the curses but she managed to take what she thought the most powerful three she found were.

A curse soul differs from a demon soul in quite a few ways. the most notable of which being that there is no influence from them. they were never anything conscious - just a essence of magic really. but they had properties that only demons could connect with enough to wield. even though they don’t have any distinct voices, like the demon souls do, they still have intent. which mira can only really feel when in their forms.

MIRA can’t quite use these magics as though they were her own - she has to go through the channels of her takeover magic to do so. hence the transformations i’ve listed below.

HER reason for pushing herself so hard to absorb these curse souls is because she thought that perhaps if she took them then on the chance any of the tartaros members revived themselves/came back they wouldn’t be able to use the curses - at least not with the same power. mira still doesn’t know if she was right or not.

BY the end of this mira had damn near exhausted herself magically. after all was said & done lisanna && elfman had to carry her home. where she slept it off for three weeks. she still isn’t fully recovered.

ALGERIA CURSE SOUL

ALGERIA is technically a canon-used spell - but honestly just disregard what happened in canon. for my mira, algeria is a takeover that allows her to use a form algeria curse ( which really isn’t explained well in canon so here we go! ) meaning that she can summon a really small version of the monster plutogrim. who ends up being about the height of her knee & she can command it. in fights it’s mostly useless, at least at this point, but it pretty much just clamps onto something with it’s body && holds on. mira has sort of renamed it, to just pluto, as she thought plutogrim was unfitting.

MIRA is kinda fond of pluto though, because it’s not really malicious. it’s actually a bit dumb. in all the instances where she’s used this takeover &&& summoned it she’s mostly just had it help her with little tasks like the dishes, sweeping etc. pluto is pretty protective of mira, which ends up being more cute than worrying due to it’s size. she needs to be in the algeria takeover to summon pluto - which takes a pretty large amount of her energy to do - but unlike celestial spirits it doesn’t take her any energy at all to keep it. pluto maintains itself & has stayed for almost three days after being summoned before getting too tired to stay. it will leave immediately upon mira’s dismissal though. where does it go? who knows - not mira, not me.

HOWEVER mira really hasn’t explored this takeover outside of that && doesn’t have any immediate plans to do so.

THORN CURSE SOUL

THIS soul comes from mira bonding with the thorn curse. when transformed, mira is able to cast very basic spells within it’s realms. she can manifest one, maybe two, vines at a time but it takes a lot of concentration from her because she’s so new with this & it pulls from a different sort of magic than mira is used to.

MASTERY of this takeover isn’t a particular priority of mira’s for any time in the near future. it’s not causing her any problems to leave it dormant for the time being. so she hasn’t really explored the extent of what she could do with this. at present, she can maintain this soul for roughly ten minutes before it lapses.

VISUALLY speaking - Mira’s hair remains white, but from her body emerge thorn studded vines that wrap along her neck, both legs, waist && her arms. there are a few flower-like plants that show up occasionally ( a representation of how much power she’s investing in the soul ) that are very explosive - not that Mira has discovered this yet. over her right eye grows a rose that has equally explosive petals.

AS a whole - this takeover is certainly one of Mira’s more gruesome looking ones, that paired with her particular memories of this soul - she is eager to let it rest while she gets a handle on more pressing matters.

TENCHI KAIMEI CURSE SOUL

THIS takeover changes her hair drastically. it takes on a water-like quality, similar to juvia’s waterbody ability, although the water coming from mira’s hair is toxic. her ears also turn gill-like & she gets webbing in between her fingers && toes. there are sharp boned fins that protrude from her ears, as well as down her spine - if one were to touch the edges of them without care they’d come back with bleeding fingers.

IN this form, mira is able to use the tenchi kaimei curse. meaning that she can create &&& manipulate “black water” that is toxic to any human. in theory, she would be able to summon large amounts of it in the same way as torafusa does & use it to drown her opponents. however, she can feel the amount of energy it’d take ( not to mention damage to whatever area she’s in ) && as such hasn’t even made attempts to do so.

SO far, all she’s done is summon pretty small amounts of the stuff &&& practice weaving it around in the air. as the curse souls have no real conscious, this soul doesn’t bother her while she isn’t using it - but while practicing she can feel the intent of the curse.
