The Skull Index Outreach work!

Our amazing outreach and promotional volunteer staff, Grace, who you can find at @/grb.bones on instagram did an interactive skull guessing game stall at @/themisfitmarket_ in Darlington, UK, and shared leaflets about The Skull Index!

We hope later this year and throughout 2025 both the UK and USA teams will be able to branch out to more in-person stalls and educational talks at local community centres, events, home-schooling, or other academic institutions! Really excited to see how in-person outreach work develops with the Skull Index.

Here are some highlights of the past six months of the ARAS Pioneer Teen Internship. Some of our activities have included free draws (including the exquisite corpses above) and free writing to free up to the subconscious mind for creative activities, we also learned coptic book binding, visited the New York Public Library’s Picture Collection, and learned about the day to day activities of the archive.

I went to a permafrost exhibit and it was phenomenal!!! I got to smell permafrost and touch a fossil that was preserved in the last Ice Age’s permafrost!! I took so many notes (I can’t help it; it’s the writer in me) and had an absolute blast. THOUGHTS: “What do #museumeducation and #arttherapy have in common?” n this day last year, @bayerische.museumsakademie discussed with “Kunsttherapie Netzwerk e. V. (Art Therapy Network), how museums and art therapy can enrich each other. We ask ourselves: what do museum education and art therapy have in common? How do they differ? How can they profit from each other in the museum, and afterwards? We intend to do more events like these. By this interdisciplinary approach we want to extend the discourse about museums by perspectives of different stakeholders in the cultural sector. Afterwards the participants are asked to think about why they set their tables the way they did. Was it for a special occasion? Jean-Michel Basquiat’s paintings of boxers are among his most personally and politically charged subjects. In the figure of the Black boxer, Basquiat found an alluring icon of self-made power, a hero for the modern era, an athletic champion who manages to triumph in a world where the odds were firmly stacked against him in the form of deep-seated racial prejudices. This was a heroic figure that Basquiat deeply identified with, as a young man possessed of powerful artistic talent, of Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, going up against the predominantly white world of the art establishment.

As Basquiat famously declared in a 1983 interview, he defined the subject of his art as “Royalty, heroism and the streets” (quoted in H. Geldzahler, “Art: From the Subways to Soho, Jean-Michel Basquiat,” Interview, January 1983). The human figure quickly emerged as the central theme in Basquiat’s work, which he would use as a vehicle for melding autobiography with references to popular culture and Black history.
