Why I love the Spymaster #107: Femininity and resistance in classic Western art!

#107: Femininity and resistance in classic Western art!
Nope, I'm still not done talking about the Spymaster and his takeover of classic Western art in The Power of the Doctor.
Inspired by some comments from @sclfmastery, An ACTUAL Art Historian, I'm noticing an interesting theme in the Spymaster's artworks where he takes on the woman's role: the Mona Lisa [#101], Girl with a Pearl Earring [#102], and American Gothic [#106].
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
@sclfmastery observes, "He is anything but the passive ingenue willing to be consumed by the viewer." In all three cases where the Spymaster adopts the woman's role, he does so in a way that resists his objectification as a pretty thing.
In the Mona Lisa, he looks directly at the viewer, almost gloating, as he assumes the subject's famously mysterious air.
In Girl with a Pearl Earring, he faces away from the viewer, apparently indifferent to being looked at. @sclfmastery also adds, "[T]he Master is REFUSING the voyeuristic gaze of the Doctor by standing in profile, and upending the typical trope of the 'exotic Asian harem girl' by wearing a marker of aged, learned, and mature masculine identity (the beard)."
In American Gothic, he makes eye contact with the viewer, unwilling to be subsumed into a generic depiction of rural U.S. folklife.
In these three cases, the Spymaster takes on a feminine identity, one traditionally associated with passivity [i.e., sitting still for a portrait], being consumed [i.e., being watched by the audience], and being judged [i.e., being interpreted by the audience]. He turns the tables, though, by posing in ways that make him look like the spectator and judge. He also turns the tables by pasting himself as Ra-Ra-Rasputin over the original subjects, making it very clear that each painting means THE SPYMASTER. His genderbending in these three paintings becomes a way for him to resist stereotypical strictures of gender, to assert his own identity, and to state his identity as an active creator of his own reality, not merely the Doctor's dupe.
@sclfmastery posits that the Spymaster's use of the feminine role in these paintings may tie back to his time as Missy in the Vault. "[I]t says a lot about how vulnerable he may have felt as Missy–who identified as a woman, and who was...locked in a vault for 70-odd years. Never again will he be passive and complacent," she writes. What do you think?
NOTE: My discussion of the Spymaster using femininity as a form of resistance does not discount the ways he objectifies the Doctor and other characters. See discussions about the nasty intersections of race, gender, and stereotypes in the portrayal of the Spymaster here.

Disabled Good Omens Fics! Part 1
I thought it’d be good to create a list of the Good Omens fics out there w/ disabled characters! I don’t write fiction, but I want to promote all of the work you’ve been doing in making the Good Omens fandom a safe space for disabled fans! If there are any fics that aren’t on here, please let me know so I can make a Part 2~ Also: if any fic writers are looking for sensitivity readers to give feedback on accuracy of representation of autistic & queer characters, feel free to reach out to me! Check out my Sensitivity Reader page on my blog for more info. Interdependence by @goodm-omen-ts: Autistic Aziraphale & Crowley w/ chronic pain & PTSD. Want to read a lovely fic where Aziraphale & Crowley figure out each other’s access needs together? Read this fic by a good friend & lovely person! and the punchline to the joke is asking SOMEONE SAVE US by @princex-n: Crowley w/ chronic pain. Crowley’s experiences w/ chronic pain over 6000 years up to the body swap. I love how Crowley’s character arc from being ashamed of his disability to being ready to tell Aziraphale was depicted. Also the way inaccessibility in the environment & internalized ableism are shown are really well done.    its duty is to harm me, my duty is to know by @natalunasans: Autistic Aziraphale & Crowley w/ ADHD & chronic pain. Great multiple chapter fic. I enjoyed seeing assistive technology in there b/c it doesn’t come up often in fic & I LOVE that Crowley is Jewish. TW for blood/injury.  Shakes and Tremors by @milla-gsd: Crowley w/ chronic pain. Crowley tells Aziraphale about his chronic pain for the first time & Aziraphale is completely supportive. The “you’re not alone” feels I got from this made me quite emotional. Father of War by @stories-of-arani: Aziraphale w/ PTSD. Explores Aziraphale’s role in Heaven before coming to Earth & the impact that has left on him. This fic left me speechless & blown away. TW for brief descriptions of wars. i want you today, tomorrow, next week, and for the rest of our lives by @bannerenthusiast: Autistic Aziraphale & disabled Crowley. SOFT FLUFF and plans for the future! This is a really sweet & adorable fic. Please by @not-a-fucking-pogo-stick: Crowley w/ chronic pain. Aziraphale supports Crowley when Crowley has a pain flare. I love Crowley’s characterization here.  Our Own Universe by @alas-pancakes: Autistic original character. Aziraphale & Crowley take in an autistic kid & give him the love & support he always should have had. I read this fic to remind myself that chosen parents who accept children for who they are are out there. TW for emotional abuse (parent emotionally abusing their child), ableism, & 1 use of the r word. a culmination of miracles by @campgender: Crowley w/ chronic pain. Crowley tells Aziraphale he has chronic pain & Aziraphale wants to understand so he can support Crowley. TW for minor unintentional ableism. Not Alone by @superqueerdanvers: Crowley & Anathema friendship. Anathema & Crowley have a conversation about their disabilities & find solidarity together. Crowley w/ chronic pain & Anathema is an amputee. i was lost at the edge of dying (in a world so cold) by @brokenfannibal: Autistic Crowley. Crowley is captured by a cult & Aziraphale has to rescue him. TW for violence & torture.

HOT TAKE: Every single Master/Missy is a performative entity, a donned moniker of ultimate autonomy and domination, but nowhere is this MORE evident than with Dhawan!Master, simply for the facts that:
1) the narrative and writing allow us to see him BOTH in scenes with people and then entirely alone, allowing a sharp contrast between how he acts and how he really feels,
and
2) never is his neurodivergency and his need to “pass” (as do, painfully, so many of us IRL) as “functioning and normal” and “in control” in front of his adversaries, more vividly explored than it is in Sacha Dhawan’s performance,
and
3) never is it clearer that he is severely mentally ill--that is, suicidally depressed, making those sharp contrasts between performative and authentic self more jarringly blatant.
Tagging: @mastershearts  @modernwizard @natalunasans  @brokenbluedoors and all others interested in the discourse on neurodiversity and the Master.

//I’ve seen a lot of discourse going around that Crowley’s outlook on life, God and the universe is highly Jewish in nature.  I have to say that I love this and am interested in pursuing it in my writing.
I am matrilineally Jewish, but I am not practicing (I practice Protestant Christianity).  I’m familiar with a lot of the basics, but not the nuances, of Jewish culture.
Any of my readers Jewish, and willing to volunteer feedback? I want to do this responsibly.

Tonner Jeremy Voss Dressed,  Tyler Rival with Extra Trousers and Shoes
Tyler's rival in the fashion world, Jeremy Voss with his long locks, sassy t-shirt and moto boots, cuts a dashing figure.
He will come as shown, dressed in t-shirt, trousers, boots and stand. His yellow-trimmed jacket is included. In addition, I will include a pair of white trousers, socks and shoes for those more mainstream events! All Tonner-issue items.
When @natalunasans was listing her Tonner dolls on ebay, she asked if there were any particular Tonners I was looking for. This guy - Jeremy Voss - is one I mentioned. As the description mentions, his character was a rival to Tyler Wentworth. He’s still one of the early male face sculpts. (I think it was Matt, Russel, Sean, and then Jeremy.)
This one looks a little wall-eyed, but I’ve always liked the long, dark hair on him. There’s another auction that has 2 blond Jeremy Voss heads and another with 2 black-haired ones, but I totally can’t afford either. Plus, those auctions are going to become vicious bidding wars, based on the variety of heads offered.
I have an feeling the flood of inventory that brodjam has miiiight be from the Tonner company directly? Or at least from a long-time collector or industry-insider. I saw one head marked as “master”, and the writing on other heads has been blurred. Plus a blank, unrooted Disney Belle. Like, who the hell would have THAT doll, aside from Tonner or an industry-insider? I swear, brodjam always has the BEST listings... which I can’t afford.

Reasons I love the Spymaster #94: Ra-Ra-Rasputin the [apparently] unkillable!
Find my full series under the HELP I WUVS HIM tag.
#94: Ra-Ra-Rasputin the [apparently] unkillable!
The Spymaster's turn as Grigori Ra-Ra-Rasputin in The Power of the Doctor never fails to entertain and amuse me. I write about different aspects in this list, including the costume [#55], reasons he chooses the persona [#65], the dance [#69], the song [#90], and the facial hair [#92].
I realize that I forgot to add a reason why the Spymaster chooses to impersonate Rasputin: Dude was allegedly hard to kill!
He was stabbed in 1914 and deathly ill, but he survived.
In 1916, anti-Rasputin nobles led by Prince Felix Yusupov tried to kill him first by feeding him poisoned tea and cakes. He seemed not to be affected.
His assassins tried giving him some poisoned wine. He drank three glasses and still seemed okay.
Assassins shot him once in the chest and left him for dead. He was not dead. When Yusupov returned to the scene, Rasputin jumped up, attacked him, and ran away.
He was tracked down and shot and thrown in the river. After surviving four attempts on his life, he died on the fifth.
Rasputin's unkillability parallels the unkillability of Koschei the Deathless, a character of Slavic folklore that the Master takes a childhood name from [#74: The Russian obsession deepens...]. It also parallels the unkillability of the Master himself. Sure, you can try to kill him, but the Master will always come back. He's a Time Dork. They're like cockroaches that way. :p

@natalunasans replied to your post: From Dr. Labrunie on the death of his son, Gerard...
He sounds like he didn’t know him at all. Did he even want to?!
I...I really have no idea  WHAT Labrunie Snr thought or felt about Gerard, besides “ perpetual disappointment and disapproval”  -- which seems to have been about all Gerard knew about it either. Labrunie did Not Approve of artistic careers or artistic friends or artistic life-- to the extent of burning Gerard’s writing when he was a teenager living at home--doesn’t seem to have visited his son during his hospitalizations (which was, sadly, very common at the time in the case of mental health hospitals) , didn’t give much in the way of response to Gerard’s letters and doesn’t seem to have offered anything in the way of financial or emotional support once he moved out. But...he did  insist on having Gerard live in the city with him when he was discharged from the army (rather horribly, by taking him away on the afternoon they met from the relatives who’d raised him to the age of seven. Hi kid, say goodbye to everyone you’ve ever known!)...for...reasons?!? But heck if I know what they were, since he seems to have been utterly disinterested in being a father in practice. Which got really complicated as Gerard seems to have been determined to try to be a Very Good Son to the extent that it didn’t stop him from being a writer.>:
(Like I’ve said before, Labrunie Sr. often seems to have been living the cliche Disapproving Ex-Army Dad role from a TV BioMovie about a pioneering artist. I guess the cliches gotta come from somewhere...)

@natalunasans replied:  don't the rules change if it's a god or everybody's supernatural
There are some things that are allowed if they’re common in-universe--like, you don’t have to add points for your OC getting scooped up by a canon character and going on adventures with them and sharing their living space if you’re writing in the Doctor Who universe.
Technically, if I was anxious about this sort of thing, I wouldn’t have to count any of the things I listed, because they’re “canon,” i.e. real life: Bård and Vegard are wildly attractive, in ways that draw the kinds of comments you usually only hear from drunken professors at department socials.  For the sake of their show they get away with some stuff that most people wouldn’t, to put it mildly.  They are rockstars and movie stars who have had their own talk show and touring stage show.  They can dance, they can act, they can perform feats of prestidigitation, they can play twenty-odd musical instruments, they speak a bunch of languages, they’re bestselling authors, they can sew, they can shoot a target, and one of them flies a darned plane.  They seem to do well at whatever they turn their hands to--well enough to compete, and win, against people who are professional athletes.  They’re prosperous in a field it’s very hard to break into, and people shower them with gifts.  I can’t help but think that the Mary Sue Litmus Test is designed to evaluate the choices one makes about a character, and I can’t take credit for these (mostly) lovely, lovely choices.
@minolyn replied:
Sorry but I'm laughing xD
Me too!  That’s why I wrote the post.  I don’t think Mary Sues are the terrible things they’re made out to be.  I think we should put something of ourselves in every character.  But, like, in every character, including the antagonists.  I think a well crafted, well written Mary Sue is a good character, and a badly crafted, badly written Mary Sue is a bad character, and we should aim for good characters rather than bad ones, period, so I don’t think the Mary Sue thing should be an issue.
@chaoticellum replied:
Oh dear, I read 51.b as "harm" instead of "charm"
I just watched “Pie Jesu” again, and I think it could work either way.  :)

Dude, Simm!master deserves all the love and joy in the world.
Tumblr media
Well I super appreciate this and I know the muse does. At the same time, it’s good to contemplate this in (attempting) being a responsible blogger. A redemption arc should not be an apologia.  I need to be careful.
I think it’s important to acknowledge the things Simm Master did that were pretty dreadful, LOL.  What complicates matters, of course, which is kind of the thing this blog harps on about all the time, is that the Master is the Master (and at times, Missy), right? From one face to the other, the same entity.  What changes, arguably, is contingent upon who is at the writing helm at the time, more than “personality differences between faces/incarnations.” You may already know this, but it’s called the Watsonian vs. Doylist perspective.   The problem with most of the Simm Master hate, I think, is that people mistake the Doylist reasons for his behavior as Watsonian reasons.  Basically, one should acknowledge that  some of the explanations for in-universe behavior boil down to bad, tone-deaf writing.  They’re Doylist reasons.
RTD, Moffat, and Chibnall are ALL guilty of writing the Master/Missy irresponsibly.  @modernwizard recently made a post about Chibnall’s racial and gender-based tone-deaf errors in writing Dhawan Master.  When it comes to Simm Master, RTD and Moffat are pretty bad, too, not in representing the Master HIMSELF (a white man), but in his relationships with the people he hurts.
It has been, for instance, pointed out that both times the Simm Master mistreated companions of the Doctor, they were black (the Jones family and Bill Potts--the Bill thing, with the Cybermen conversion, even borders on eugenics, which, given the most prominent Western example thereof in real life, bothers me as a person of Jewish heritage more than I can say).   This is incredibly and repeatedly insensitive to a POC audience.
Moreover, representations of gender: why would a canonically nonbinary character from a culture that “doesn’t do gender like you humans do” consciously and consistently be misogynistic? To his wife, whom he beat? To Martha’s sister, telling her to “just stand there and be pretty”? To Bill, “do as she says? Is the future going to be all girl?” This not only misrepresents the Master from a Watsonian perspective, distorting the essence of his character for shock value, it’s also an unnecessary way to make him a compelling, “love-to-hate-them” villain to an audience of women.  The showrunners are (perhaps) trying to condemn this kind of ass-backwards misogyny by rendering the ALIEN villain an exemplar of all the most debased qualities in a HUMAN villain, because that’s their Doylist agenda . . . but does it really work?
I would argue that it doesn’t.  A villain’s flaws should be consistent with his background and his motives.  They should not just be arbitrarily superimposed onto the character “because bad guy.”  The person who actually writes about this the most eloquently in the case of Simm is @the-twohearted-dalek.
I know these things mostly because of the great writers I’ve encountered here on Tumblr. Characters like River Song, who seem, in Moffat’s hands, to be mere titllating male fantasy extensions of the Doctor, are suddenly brought breathtakingly to life as compelling, sympathetic characters of their own by FAN writers.  Re Simm Master, someone who is great at this is @natalunasans, who makes a series of photoshoots of dolls they’ve designed (as well as fanfictions) portraying the Master as a chronically ill enby.  Again, the issue is a Doylist one. Get a good writer who loves and respects the characters, and gives them flaws that MAKE SENSE, and you’ve got half the battle fought.
Writing him therefore presents the challenge of constantly disclaiming that one does not condone the outside-universe flaws that are shoved onto who he is by showrunners who are more interested in getting an emotional rise out of the audience than in disseminating media content responsibly and sensitively.  It’s a unique challenge, and worthwhile, but occasionally, I will admit it’s exhausting.
Another example of this is people who write Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and have to contend with Joss Whedon the Glorified White Male “Feminist’s” giggly need to slip “cunt” into the Avengers Assemble script by having Loki call Black Widow a “mewling quim.”  Loki, who is genderfluid, and whose mother Frigga is his canonically hallowed role model.  Does that add up? Nope.
However I agree in that it’s also good to acknowledge when someone is earnestly trying to learn from their terrible mistakes and grow. Otherwise there would be no hope for anyone, because everything sentient, literally, is on some level “problematic.”  We build ideologies from the knowledge our neural network acquires while bombarded with literally millions of information cues per second.  We develop mental “shortcuts” that categorize environments and other people. The problem with that is that sometimes those shortcuts lead to stereotypes, which lead to a resistance to continue learning and growing, because we have “those people” pegged.  And that’s, I think, the root of all evil.  Unlearning that ad being open to growth again, with new information, is a part of every good redemption arc. I hope that  for every Master, even this one.
Thanks for passing on your sweet message to the evil gay tardigrade <3

But I don’t know what to say in reviews!!!
Interesting discussion with fellow mod @natalunasans this morning.  We talked about our new followers (hello!) and how inactive this blog has been and wondering why people aren’t writing hurt/comfort lately (or much of anything else) and of course the talk circled around to feedback, or lack thereof, as the primary discouraing factor for fanfic writers.
Nothing is worse than putting time and energy and care into a story only to have it disappear into the depths of Tumblr or AO3 or FF.net with very few likes or kudos or comments. Many times I am blown away by a wonderfully-crafted story but when I try to leave a comment my mind goes completely blank and so I press the kudo button and scurry away with good intentions of leaving a comment later (Spoiler: I never do.)
We joked that what was needed was a Mad Libs fill-in-the-blank form for comments:  “Hey, I really loved (title of story) and the way you write (charcter) is (adjective) and it made me feel (adjective)!”  And then we looked at each other (virutally, of course) and thought we might be on to something.  It’s not Mad Libs exactly but we brainstormed some positive, loving and encouraging feedback that you can borrow to make your favorite authors feel appreciated.  We hope you’ll use them if you want and we encourage you to reply or reblog and add your own suggestions.
“I [always wanted to / didn't know i needed to] read a fic about __________ [and/but] here it is!”
“Good use of [metaphor / anthropomorphism / alliteration / textures”
“I didn't see it coming when _________ and it made for such an enjoyable read.”
“You can never have too much [insert reader's favourite trope here]"
"help! too many feels!  i may explode" (this was left on a friend's fic and she keeps re-using it)
“You have an incredible skill for natural dialogue/evocative setting/characterization”
“Your writing moves me/makes me laugh/stays in my mind even after I've finished your story”
“I love your style!”
“I never wanted this story to end!”
“I was so caught up in your story that everything else disappeared for a while”
“I didn't stop until I'd read every word, thanks for the sleepless night/chores I never finished/errands I didn't run”
