Lucius is in!!
I still need his final thermostat and humidity gauge to get here, so I have an old one just sitting in his habitat (both sides) for now.

Some of these suggestions are based on access to DVDs or downloads. Also will have to take me through a lot of packing and unpacking and painting and furniture (re)construction and other diy projects, so I will be working through the list in the order of results, in the event I run out of the winner. Please vote!

Golf Courses ARE Being Converted
The Solarpunk "fantasy" that so many of us tout as a dream vision, converting golf courses into ecological wonderlands, is being implemented across the USA according to this NYT article!
The article covers courses in Michigan, Pennsylvania, California, Colorado, and New York that are being bought and turned into habitat and hiking trails.
Tumblr media
The article goes more into detail about how sand traps are being turned into sand boxes for kids, endangered local species are being planted, rocks for owl habitat are being installed, and that as these courses become wilder, they are creating more areas for biodiversity to thrive.
Most of the courses in transition are being bought by Local Land Trusts. Apparently the supply of golf courses in the USA is way over the demand, and many have been shut down since the early 2000s. While many are bought up and paved over, land Trusts have been able to buy several and turn them into what the communities want: public areas for people and wildlife. It does make a point to say that not every hold course location lends itself well to habitat for animals (but that doesn't mean it wouldn't make great housing!)
Tumblr media
So lets be excited by the fact that people we don't even know about are working on the solutions we love to see! Turning a private space that needs thousands of gallons of water and fertilizer into an ecologically oriented public space is the future I want to see! I can say when I used to work in water conservation, we were getting a lot of clients that were golf courses that were interested in cutting their resource input, and they ended up planting a lot of natives! So even the golf courses that still operate could be making an effort.
So what I'd encourage you to do is see if there's any land or community trusts in your area, and see if you can get involved! Maybe even look into how to start one in your community! Through land trusts it's not always golf course conversions, but community gardens, solar fields, disaster adaptation, or low cost housing! (Here's a link to the first locator I found, but that doesn't mean if something isn't on here it doesn't exist in your area, do some digging!)

I was passing through a neighboring town and seeing the lush, green rolling hills and the blushing blueberry fields and the pale green lichens and fern after fern and while my first thought was my god, what a place to live!, my second thought was how many other animals on this earth look around at their habitat and think the very same, and how sweet that is. my old dog used to sit halfway down our hill and close her eyes. she was listening to the wind pass through, the stream go by, the seasons come in and go out without a sound. I’ll bet the birds and the crickets and the caterpillars do the very same.

"Until recently, a visit to the Colorado River’s delta, below Morelos Dam, would be met with a mostly dry barren desert sprinkled with salt cedar and other undesirable invasive plant species. Today, that arid landscape is broken up with large areas of healthy riparian habitat filled with cottonwood, willow, and mesquite trees. These are restoration sites which are stewarded through binational agreements between the United States and Mexico, and implemented by Raise the River—a coalition of NGOs including Audubon"
Thanks to @aersidhe for sending this in!

This is very exciting news indeed! The dark bordered beauty moth (Epione vespertaria) is found across Europe, but in Britain its habitat has been so reduced that it is now only found in three small areas in Scotland. Intensive captive breeding efforts starting last year led to a release of 160 caterpillars earlier this year, and researchers were delighted to find two adult male moths from that clutch a few weeks ago.
While it's certainly possible to import members of the same species from other parts of Europe, it's crucially important to save the local population. Individual populations of a given species may have unique genes, and add diversity and strength to the overall species' gene pool.
Like the Oregon silverspot butterfly similarly reintroduced in my area of the Pacific Northwest, the caterpillars of the dark bordered beauty have a limited diet, in this case aspen trees. They're not the most common tree in the region, and due to overpopulation of deer as well as livestock grazing they often have a tough time getting a foothold as the herbivores mow them down before they can grow large enough to survive a little browsing. I don't know whether the unnamed site where the caterpillars were released is also seeing more aspens planted, but deliberate habitat restoration will need to see these trees protected and perhaps propagated as well.
In the meantime, I wish these little moths (and their caretakers) the very best in reclaiming their historic range!

I usually copy a few paragraphs of a story for you guys to review. The only way I could do this story justice, though, would be to copy the entire story.
Instead, I urge you to follow the link. Thanks!

I thought the snapping turtle would get its own aquarium or something. But it’s just standing there. 🤣

The Brookfield Zoo is such a shining light in the zoo community. Not only do they spearhead a first-of-its-kind study (encompassing 43 zoos, aquariums, and marine parks) investigating what factors actually impact cetacean welfare, they invest $10 million into updating their habitat based on the findings of their study. Their seven dolphins, ranging from 18 to 50 years in age, recently returned home to Brookfield after over a year away while their habitat was renovated. These renovations include:
🌊 "New additions to the dolphins' habitat, including rockwork structures, sand pits for enrichment, built-in bubbler systems, and more!"
🔬 "Upgrades for scientific research, including underwater microphones and overhead camera to study the dolphins"
💡 "Building upgrades, including a new roof, skylights, energy efficient lighting, a new heating and cooling system, and improved accessibility"
🌴 "And a fresh look in the stadium designed to depict the natural environment of Sarasota Bay, Florida."
You can read more about the upgrades here. In a time when so many facilities are throwing in the towel and getting rid of their animals, it's so refreshing to see a place dedicated to optimizing their dolphins' welfare and continuing vital research efforts.

It begins. Jörmy is going to get a tank upgrade. Because he is going to get his brother’s tank. And his brother Lucius is getting a PALACE curtesy of toad ranch and their amazing habitats!
This has already taken a month of work. Future progress pictures will come.

I’m really struggling with what I ‘should’ do today (hang art on the walls because couch is arriving this week so things will be getting harder to move around soon) and what I want to do (knit sweater, update reading journal, watch movies, etc) but it is a rainy Saturday so I am going to lean more on the ‘want to do list’ and be responsible tomorrow.
I think I’ll at least lay out the two more labor intensive gallery walls and hang some of the smaller/easier things. I always hate this part because I’m so anxious about neighbors, already got the dreaded BANG BANG response when I was hanging the tapestry the other day. But like, what do you want me to do? I guess I could use command strips but that gets so expensive so quick and a picture hanging pack and some extra nails were like $10 total. And I’m really responsible about timing, I’d never do it late at night or anything. But I am a socially anxious people pleaser so I am nauseous at the thought of getting yelled at.
Hoping it’s better now because everything else I’m going to hang is on inner walls or exterior walls, not the shared ones (for now) so maybe they won’t notice as much.

i just think theres so much more to that time merlin was freeze-dying (get it? like freeze drying? im funny i swear) from the dorocha attack. like what if after those events, hes become extra sensitive to the cold??
like that man absolutely cannot STAND the cold, it not only brings back bad memories (and, unfortunately, reminds him of lancelot) but his body as an in general is weaker to it. so hes always looking for warmth- im talking sitting practically inches away from the fire, stealing blankets, jackets (particularly arthur-), cloaks (particularly arthurs)- you get the gist
and the others catch on, obviously- though they dont realise the severity of it til merlin nearly lights his arm on fire on a particularly chilly night on a hunt (“MERLIN what on EARTH DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING?!” “im cold” “you’re ON FIRE” “im cold :(” “?!?!”)
after that arthur, the knights and gwen start gifting him little things- an old cloak arthur insists is too damaged and fugly to wear (its in nearly perfect condition), one of elyan’s old jackets he’d long since outgrown from gwen
and the knights, well their gift to merlin is their physical body heat (gwaine in particularly enjoys holding onto merlin like a koala with the excuse of keeping him warm. the only reason arthur doesnt kill him for it is cause of merlins content smile at being warm)
