I'm still trying to save my mom and bring her home to my dad, but the truth is, I'm scared. She's been working for a high demon for twenty years and what will she do back in my little home town? Go get a job at the diner and regale the local Baptists with stories of her days working for a demon? Yeah, right.

MUNDUS PATET - THE ROMAN FEAST OF THE DEAD

The expression mundus patet means “open world” and refers to the Mundus Cereris, a stone building located in the forum. It is one of the oldest buildings in Rome and marked the exact center of the city. It was believed that this was the connection point between the world of the living and the world of the dead, so most of the time its entrance remained sealed by a large slab that was only removed three times a year: on August 24, October 5, and November 8. According to Cato the Elder, in the days when "the world was open," all official acts and military activities were suspended; The doors of the temples had to remain closed; they could not celebrate marriages or have sexual relations; and the brothels also had to remain closed since the souls of the dead could be envious and drag the women to their deaths. The Roman conception of the world of the dead and the evil creatures that inhabited it has many similarities with Halloween. Just as the lares were benevolent spirits, there were also evil spirits, called larvae and maniae. A special case occurs with witches, who in Christian tradition have always been associated with evil, while in the Roman world they had a more ambivalent position. They were priestesses initiated into the mysteries of magic, which they could use for both good and evil. Literature attests that the Romans feared them for their supposed powers and in particular for their knowledge of necromancy, the magic of death, with which it was believed that they could steal the lives of newborns (hence the literary cliché that the witches hate children). But in that fear there was also a certain respect for their supposed powers of divination and mediation with the dead and it was believed that the gifts prepared by them, especially sweets, helped appease the evil spirits so that they would leave the living in peace. There were also the feared lemurs, souls that found no rest due to their violent death and continued to wander the earth tormenting the living. Their appearance and behavior correspond to what we would call ghosts today, but they also have similarities with vampires since, unlike other beings of the underworld, lemurs were specifically nocturnal and their own name means "spirits of the night." There was a festival specifically dedicated to appeasing them, the Lemuralia, which took place on May 9, 11, and 13.

Clearing Up Common Vampire Misconceptions:

Often, those in the magical world have misconceptions about vampires, often due to how rare they are, so I decided to make a post to enlighten things, especially since I'll be living among you on the Wizard Island.

Note: while I may say statements about vampires and their magic, understand that every vampire is different, and not every statement applies to every vampire.

Vampires, or sanguophages, are created during a ritual known as the First Death, which typically requires another vampire present to complete, but has rarely been completed without one, although the results vary wildly. When the First Death is complete, the newly turned exhibit symptoms slowly. Accidental First Deaths also happen on occasion, but are far less common.

Over the coming days and weeks, the human blood in their body is metabolized quickly as changes occur, including but not limited to: weight loss, light sensitivity in both skin and eyes, development of enlarged canine fangs, total albinism, and multiple organ failure, which is the last to occur as the ritual is complete.

Vampires, as is well known, are sensitive to sunlight, or more specifically, Ultra-violet light. This is caused by two major sources: the aforementioned albinism, and less mundane magical weakness to sunlight. The sunlight weakness varies from vampire to vampire, in the lightest cases resulting in frequent sunburn and light burning sensations in direct sunlight, and the worst resulting in total disintegration in direct sunlight, and skin fires with indirect sunlight.

This is often, but not always, linked to a vampire's overall magical proficiency, with the stronger vampires developing more intense weakness. All vampires to my knowledge, however, report eye strain in sunny conditions, with heavy overcasts being the brightest conditions we can feel comfortable seeing.

The albinism is the cause of the vampire's famous red, pink, or white eyes, and many humans have been mistaken for vampires due to natural albinism in the past, which has led to unjust treatment.

Vampires, as you can probably tell by myself, can also become Wizards. In fact, we often have natural proficiency in several fields of magic, such as Necromancy, Dark Magic (the manipulation of shadows), and Chronomancy. I personally employ a great deal of Eromancy, Mind Magic, and Spacial Manipulation in my day-to-day life.

Furthermore, not all vampires are considered evil, and much like humans, that is a result of our own actions, desires, and behaviors. I however am very evil.

Vampires are still capable of eating, with weaker vampires still requiring it for basic sustenance. Garlic, however, is to be avoided at all costs, as I experienced recently when @kinjedl provided a Stew with garlic, which I was unaware of. It unfortunately did lead to my complete disintegration (which required a great deal of blood to reverse) but I'd do it again, as that Stew was completely delicious.

Vampires come from all walks of life, but it is typically the older ones like myself (I turn 403 in November), who live in mansions and castles and have excellent access to vampire-care, while new vampires, especially accidental ones, often live in poverty without clean access to blood or even basic sunlight protection such as magically strengthened sunscreen or Spheres of Eternal Darkness, a plight I have a great deal of interest in helping to stop.

Night of Hekate Hecate is part of the most ancient form of the triple Moon goddesses as the Crone of the Dark (New) Moon. Artemis was the Crescent Moon, and Selene was the Full Moon.

Most of Hecate’s worship was performed at a three-way crossroad at night. Food was left there as an offering to her.

She ruled the passages of life and transformation, birth and death. She was associated with crossroads, entrance-ways, fire, light, the Moon, magic, witchcraft, a knowledge of herbs and poisonous plants, necromancy, and sorcery.

November was the ninth month in the oldest Roman calendar. Hecate closely parallels the Roman goddess Trivia, with whom she was identified in Rome.

Today Hecate is one of the ‘patron’ goddesses of many witches, who in some traditions refer to her in the Goddess’s aspect of the “Crone”. But other traditional witches associate her with the Maiden and/or with the Mother as well, for Hecate has three faces, or phases.

Modern worshipers honor this tripartite goddess as the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone. A modern writer, Robert Graves, wrote about her in The White Goddess.

Historical depictions and descriptions show her facing in three different directions and later Greek references say she had the heads of animals and refer to her as the “Mistress of Animals.” Her chosen animals were the toad, the owl, the dog and the bat.

One of the things I hated the most in NFCV is how they literally reduced a Devil Forgemaster's power to only necromancy... When they're SO much more powerful than that. They can LITERALLY MAKE WEAPONS just from the RAW ELEMENTS ALONE. And the fact that Hector could fight Death and Dracula! He literally REDUCED Drac's curse in the end!! ((Also his sassy response to Drac is "I'm the Devil Forgemaster. I can make your curse into a harmless thing." Alhdkahsja I love him so much)). I HATE how they make them so... Useless??? I don't understand they're so much cooler than the show made them out to be

So, I'm a bit torn on this because I actually don't mind the change in NFCV... in theory.

Do I think Devil Forging in canon is absolutely fucking cool and badass and underrated and ripe with potential? Yes. There is a reason I made the crest my icon :P I love that Hector calls it blasphemous in PtR, I love the idea that they're literally spitting in God's face by creating cursed life!

Devil Forgemaster

A blasphemer who can manipulate magic and life

^ tell me that isn't the rawest way to describe Devil Forgemasters, PtR doesn't shy away from the religious symbolism and it does so in a much more tasteful way than NFCV

I love that it's Dracula's magic itself that they're manipulating, which explains how Hector and only him could nullify the Curse! (and this is also why I believe Isaac was really spreading it, and it wasn't just Death's lie)

Human beings embued with dark magic directly from the Dark Lord himself. Tell me it isn't the coolest thing in the Vaniaverse.

And yes, they are absolute beasts that can forge their own weapons with alchemy and fight with all sorts of weapons. Normal swords? Rapiers? Zweihanders? Axes? Spears? Electric guitar? Hector has it covered. I wholeheartedly believe that both of them were the terror of Wallachia when they worked together: how do you defend yourself against multi-disciplined, super strong, super tough knights that can literally sic dragons on you?

also yes Hector vs. Dracula is so fucking raw, Hector is the ultimate gigachad and I will die on this hill. He literally asks "Have you forgotten that I'm a Devil Forgemaster?" with the smuggest tone in his voice <3

I also personally love Isaac's "Do not equate a Devil Forgemaster's power with that of an ordinary sorcerer!" dude's so mad that trevor dared to underestimate him and his ex. i love him too <3

However. I recognize that, without the gameplay element, they would have been a little too OP. I am perfectly fine with the nerfing of Devil Forging in the show: not only limiting them by tying their powers to a weapon would have been an interesting obstacle to overcome, but the promotional posters of S2 gave them a very low Strength stat.

Basically, the idea, I suppose, was to make them squishy wizards: they're not proficient at all in physical fights, but they don't need to be, when they can control a whole army of demons. And as for the necromancy aspect, well, it would have emphasized even more the dark, cursed nature of their power. It's a facsimile of life, nothing more.

The problem is that, of course, nothing was done with this. Isaac can simply... stibby stab people in a row, and with no effort at all they become night creatures. Yeeting him into the Sahara would have been a great opportunity to make him lose his knife, and force him to live as a vulnerable human, and maybe learn about the value of human life that way, but nooooo can't make the darling babyboy of the narrative suffer even a little! He has Deep Speeches about How Much Humans Suck to make! 🙄 And we barely see Hector actually do his job, only for Carmilla's sake, which will never stop make me wonder, why did Dracula and Carmilla want him so much to the point of resorting to manipulation? Nothing in the story shows me that he has any usefulness! He's not smart, he's not physically strong, he's easy to manipulate, we have little idea of how good of a Forgemaster he is... some General he is! Isaac could have easily run the whole castle by himself, for how badass and invincible they made him!

In retrospect, giving Isaac a lower Strength stat than Hector was a bold lie. By all means, Hector should have been the more talented of the two even in this version: he was the child prodigy who was resurrecting dogs as a child, while Isaac had to study hard to catch up. But no. Hector was relegated to torture porn. Okay.

Oh, and never forget that the plot forgot about the "dark, cursed" part of their power when Carmilla needed a priest to bless the water :^) because what's consistency when we have to favor our babyboys and girlbosses :^)

(also eh i guess being too op didn't stop sypha from literally steamrolling her way through the show, so yeah, the point's moot anyway)
