Illustration of ancient Greek house - Oikos (Oikoi, plural)
This is the typical term for a Greek house. Most houses in ancient Greece were oikia, designed to provide a comfortable living space for a family.

For the conservative, human beings come into this world burdened by obligations, and subject to institutions and traditions that contain  within them a precious inheritance of wisdom, without which the exercise of freedom is as likely to destroy human rights and entitlements as to enhance them.

The Oikos
The household worship is represented by the term oikos. This includes household worship and family traditions, which includes the family itself. It is often misinterpreted that the household worship just plain didn’t exist, with emphasis put on the Polis (the festivals) and the Mystery Cults. This is justified in a sense since there is limited art on the worship compared to the public festivals. The oikos is important in the sense that this is a worship that can be practiced in a time where hellenism is not recognized and practiced at the state level.
The Gods of the Household Worship:
Hestia
Zeus Ktesios
Zeus Erkeios
Hermes
Hekate
Apollon Agyieus
Hestia is the one who bestowed the knowledge of the Oikos, which is where her title of Goddess of Family comes from. Seeing as she is the Goddess of the Hearth, it represents where the family should gather to make food and warm themselves up. Most of the rituals of the Oikos actually take place at the altar, the perpetual burning flame sacred to her. To destroy the altar flame is to expect dire consequences for both ancestors and descendants that haven’t even been born.
Zeus Ktesios is praised as protector of the family goods and of the prosperity of the Oikos. The altar to Zeus Ktesios is usually held in a storage closet, seeing as that’s where most of the goods of the family are held. Most of the time, there was no single altar to him but was represented with an item called the Kathiskos. How to make the Kathiskos:
"It is necessary to make the symbol of Zeus Ktesios. We take a new Kathisko with two ears through which we thread white wool and yellow (crocus) thread which we take over the right shoulder so that it hangs in front we then put anything we find and ambrosia in it. Ambrosia is pure water (from a spring) and oil and all-fruit. This we put inside."
You can identify Zeus Ktesios with the house serpent (Oikoyro Ophi) that also protects the household goods. There was often symbols of the house serpent on his altars.
Zeus Erkeios represents your home and all things fenced in around your home. They would place the altar for Zeus Erkeios outside between their house and their fence. If one was living in an apartment, one could place this altar in the hall space between the door and the main open space of the apartment. For those renting a room/staying with their parents that won't allow outside altars, one would be placed along the wall.
There are three other deities: Hermes, Hekate, and Apollon Agyieus. They were protectors of the external sort, so they would be placed outside. They are of the roads, with Hekate the ruler of the crossroads, Hermes the ruler of the boundaries and the roads themselves for travel, and Apollon Agyieus the protector of the streets, alongside protecting public places and entrances. The three Gods would have their altar placed at the property limit. If living in an apartment, one could place this altar at their doorway. For those renting a room/staying with their parents that won't allow outside altars, one would be placed along the wall.

Richard Cosway, Hecate Trimorph
"Hecate was one of several deities worshipped in ancient Athens as a protector of the oikos (household)… On the night of the new moon, a meal would be set outside, in a small shrine to Hecate by the front door; as the street in front of the house and the doorway create a crossroads, known to be a place Hecate dwelled." #DailyDevotion Jesus Is Better Than Moses
Tumblr media
#DailyDevotion Jesus Is Better Than Moses Heb. 3 And so, fellow Christians --- you're holy, and heaven called you as it called us — look at Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest Whom we confess, 2being faithful to Him Who appointed Him, just as Moses was faithful in God's whole house. 3He deserves greater glory than Moses, as the builder of a house is honored more than the house. 4Every house is built by someone, but He Who built everything is God. 5Now, Moses was faithful in God's household as a servant who was to testify of what would be said later, 6but Christ was faithful as the Son in charge of God's household. We are His household if to the end we continue unshaken in our courage and in the hope of which we boast. The author moves from how Jesus is greater than angels to Jesus is greater than Moses. Our translation today is trying to make a dynamic equivalence to explain the first verse but I think a literal translation is actually more helpful. We are "holy brothers." We are participants, fellowshipers of a holy calling. We are made holy by our calling. We know we are called because Jesus baptized us with His name.We are called and made holy first by Jesus' calling through the Holy Spirit. Consider the Apostles and all the disciples. They were all called first, made holy and then started conducting themselves in holy ways. Since this is our status, we should look at Jesus, "the Apostle and High Priest Whom we confess." Jesus is the Apostle because He is the One the Father has sent to redeem us. Apostle means sent one. Jesus prays to the Father in John 17, "18As You sent Me into the world, I sent them into the world." We confess Jesus as being sent by the Father. We confess Jesus is our High Priest. Hebrews will elaborate more on Jesus being our High Priest. Sufficient to say, Jesus offered up His own blood to cleanse us from sins and intercedes for us at the right hand of the Father. Jesus is faithful to the Father who appointed Him "just as Moses was faithful in God's whole house." So now we begin with the comparison of how Jesus is better than Moses. Jesus is better than Moses because Moses only looked after the house as a servant and is part of the house. Jesus built the house. God built the house and Jesus is God. Jesus says in John 14, ". . .because I go to prepare a place for you. 3And when I have gone and prepared a place for you, I'll come again and take you home with Me so you'll be where I am. You know the way to the place where I'm going." Now Moses testified as to what was to come. Jesus was faithful in fulfilling all the promises of God. Moses was faithful as a servant. Jesus is "faithful as the Son in charge of God's household." Now house or household is from oikos which also means family. We are God's sons in Christ Jesus. We are His family. Jesus is in charge of us. We are His brothers, children and citizens. We are this if we remain faithful in this hope of which we boast. This hope that Jesus has us, called us, made us holy is our hope and this hope gives us courage to face the day and all obstacles in life. We know this life and everything in it is passing away. Having a sure and certain hope in Jesus and the future He has for us in the world to come gives us the fortitude to get through everything. Heavenly Father, continually give us Your Holy Spirit that we may be faithful to Your Son Jesus Christ and live in the hope He gives us as His household. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. In hunting you are following, and thing you follow is a pack of hounds, which in turn follows a scent. Some follow on horseback and are part of the action; others follow by foot or car. All are returning, to a certain extent, to a pre-agrarian condition.

I think I'm going to permanently stop the daily wine offerings to the gods and daimons. With 6 altars to maintain it's too complicated, the liquid water + wine systematically molds.
I will use water & reserve wine for more in-depth individual rites. (Or special occasions like tonight)
Same thing with resin incense, get fed up with the charcoal to buy and all that smoke. Cone incense has less energy, but is more practical for everyday use.
Any suggestions anyone? Oh, and happy New Year !
(I could just use incense & candles but I value food/drink offerings) 🍷🌹

Oikos Shrine January 13, 2023
I decided to change my household boundaries shrine into a shrine for all the Hellenic household Gods (at least by Attic tradition + Hera)— Oikos worship. Hestia is of course front and center with a symbolic hearth candle.
Gods left to right: Hekate, Apollo Argyieus [of the Streets], Hestia, Zeus Ktesios [of Possessions] (jar pseudo-kathiskos), Hermes, Zeus Herkeios [of the House], Hera Oikos [of the Family].
