Tuesday 12 August 2003 - last full day in Munich - surfing along the Isar - BMW Museum and Olympia Tower - CD with the "Katzenklo" song - Schnitzel at the Hofbräuhaus and also a full liter of the Original pilsener - last night before flying home

Good morning! Today I will take a tram ride to the Praterinsel inside the Isar River close to the Maximilaneum (state assembly house), walk back to Marienplatz and see people surfing on the river, take the U3 to Olympiapark, go up the tower and admire the view, hear Louis Armstrong's voice at an ice cream vending machine, walk to Georg Brauchle Ring station and take the U1 to Sendlinger Tor, do shopping along the Kaufinger Straße including a CD by Helge Schneider, and supper at the Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, to end the vacation in Summer 2003. We fly home the next day. Hope you will enjoy's adventure in Munich, Germany!

Guten Morgen! About 7 AM I woke up, took a shower, and went downstairs to breakfast. The breakfast had many fresh fruits and vegetables. Also they had soft pretzels. I had my bag with me, so I did not have to go back upstairs to get it. Hauptbahnhof had at least three tram stops, most lines using two at the most. The tram I needed stopped on the south side of the Hbf, namely, line 19 towards Berg am Laim past Max Weber Platz. The tram went past Karlsplatz-Stachus in a northeastern direction before turning right at Lenbachplatz. I remember in January 2002 going to the BMW dealership across the street from Lenbachplatz and sitting in one of the newest 7 Series BMW sedans, of E65 and E66 series.

The tram passed by the Bayerischer Hof and stopped at the north end of Marienplatz and went on to the Opera House, called the Nationaltheater tram stop. The train stopped at Maxmonument, but I wanted to go farther to Maximilaneum across the Praterinsel. In the middle of Max Planck Straße is the state parliament building. This is where the laws of the Freistaat Bayern are written and passed (or die on the floor due to a down vote). For those who have watched the "Aloysius - ein Münchner im Himmel" cartoon, this is where Aloysius was supposed to deliver a message from heaven, but instead Aloysius went back to the Hofbräuhaus to have a few Wies'n liters.

While crossing the Maximilanbrücke, I saw some people surfing on the river. The weather was good enough for that. At Maxmonument, I took a line 16 tram to the S Bahn station Isartor. From there, I rode that to Marienplatz, transferred to the U3 and went north to Olympiazentrum. In 2003, the extension to Moosach had not yet been built, though there was a U1 that went to the newly opened Georg-Brauchle-Ring. At Olympiazentrum, there was a small shopping center, completely different from the Olympia Einkaufszentrum farther west. I had visited the Olympiapark back in 1997 and 1998, and in particular, I wanted to see the tower and go up to the top. I thought about visiting the BMW Museum, so I thought, it is hot outside, so I think a visit would be fine. I think the admission fee was around € 6 or so. The cars that I remembered from 1998 were still there, particularly the Isetta, the 2002 with racing stripes, a cutout of a Series E38 7 Series, and films on the newer models with safety features. I spent about an hour there, before going to the Edeka grocery store for items to make lunch. I bought some grapefruit soda and Mezzo Mix, then a bread roll, Allgäuer toast cheese, Lyoner with pistachios and mustard. I walked to the tower and found a shaded bench to eat my sandwiches.

The Olympia Tower cost about € 7,50 to take the elevator up to the top. The tower is 191 meters high above the ground, and 291 with the satellites. The Rheinturm in Düsseldorf is about the same height. The elevator went 3 or 4 meters per second. I stayed mostly in the air conditioned lounge and enjoyed the view of downtown from afar, as well as the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. I would not be able to see the Brecherspitz unfortunately. On Friday 26 June 1998, I went with work colleagues up the Brecherspitz, and what a climb it was. There was an extra deck upstairs, not air conditioned, so I went upstairs and was able to see a little bit more. I did not spend much time there, so I came back down. Eventually I took the elevator back down and left the tower.

Before walking to the Georg-Brauchle-Ring station, I decided to have an ice cream cone from a vending machine. I think it cost € 2,00. I had to place a cone in the holder, paid my € 2,00, and while the machine was pouring the soft serve ice cream, I heard the voice of Louis Armstrong singing "Everybody loves ice cream!". It was too bad that I did not have a video camera to capture the moment. I would not have a video camera until March 2004.

I walked to the BMW Museum and boarded the line 180 bus to Georg-Brauchle-Ring. At Georg-Brauchle-Ring, I changed to the U1. I went seven stations to Sendlinger Tor, and went upstairs to take a U3 or U6 to Marienplatz. I spent maybe fifteen minutes outside the city hall. Soon I walked along Kaufingerstraße to Galeria München Marienplatz, and they had a music department. I managed to find a couple of CDs, one being "Diwodaso" from the Frankfurt duo Badesalz, the other being a semi-serious music CD by Helge Schneider, "Es gibt Reis, Baby" which included "Katzenklo". In 1993, that song was controversial. I already had Diwodaso on cassette, but the CD had more content than the cassette. I could not wait to listen to it back in the USA.

With my CDs, I took those back to the hotel. I went up to my room to have a short nap. After about 7 PM, I woke up, and I left the hotel, and walked to the Hbf tram stop to take the line 19 tram to Nationaltheater. I wanted to eat supper at the Hofbräuhaus. I had to walk along the Hofgraben, then Pfisterstraße past the restaurant owned at the time by Hans Schubeck, and right there was the Hofbräuhaus. I had asked about seating, and asked to be seated in the Biergarten. It's the one that has a fountain in the courtyard. The staff advised me to find an empty table. There was one next to the tree closest to the stairway. A waiter found my table, took my order, and soon he gave me a full liter of Hofbräu Original. It was really good. It tasted a little better than Spaten Helles and Paulaner Pils. I ordered a Schnitzel, I think it was a cream Schnitzel with seasonal grilled vegetables and Spätzle. It was really enjoyable. Inside the restaurant, there was a band playing traditional songs, similar to the ones I remember from late May 1998 just before I started working for the summer. One of the songs was "In München steht 'n Hofbräuhaus, oas, zwoa, G'Suffa!". At some stage everyone shouted "Zicka Zacka Zicka Zacka Hoi Hoi Hoi!". After supper, I paid my bill, it was about € 25,00 with tip.

I walked to the location of Schneider Bräuhaus München along Maderbräustraße, past the Stadtsparkasse München Marienplatz branch, went down to the S Bahn station and rode the S Bahn two stops to Hbf. I walked to the hotel, went up the stairs, and into my room. I had quite an experience the last two weeks, and I was prepared to go back home. About 10 or 11 PM I went to sleep.

I fly from the Franz Josef Strauß Airport to the Rhein-Main Airport, buy a bottle of Äppler and almost miss my direct flight to San Francisco, and take a Super Shuttle ride back home to my apartment in Foster City, San Mateo County, California. Simon Ambrosius ist einer der beiden Gründer von Alpen Air GmbH. Das Unternehmen bietet umweltfreundliche Rundflüge über das Fünfseenland, München und die Alpen. Ein Durchstarter, denn seit knapp einem Jahr gibt es sie mit Standort Augsburg Flughafen. Wir haben mit Ihm persönlich gesprochen und ein Interview geführt:

-Werbung- Simon, wir sind hier in Augsburg am Flughafen von hier starten die Rundflüge der Alpen Air GmbH? Augsburg ist für mich der „schönste Flughafen Münchens.“ Unsere Gäste reisen bequem über die Autobahn an und sind auch gleich am Hangar. Das Auto parkt sozusagen vor dem Flugzeug – und das kostenlos. Von hier aus starten unsere Rundflüge über München, Ammersee, Starnberger See, die Alpen und wieder zurück. Ist fliegen noch umweltbewusst im Trend? Ja, wir fliegen umweltbewusst. Du stehst hier vor einer TECNAM P2012 Traveller. Das ist die einzige Verkehrsmaschine für neun Passagiere mit geringem Verbrauch. Die Maschine ist mit hohen Sicherheitsstandards ausgestattet und sehr leise. Aus diesem Grunde können wir mit gutem Gewissen eine Auszeit über dem schönen Bayern anbieten. Wir sind komplett CO2 neutral, unser Ziel ist es, einen positiven Fußabdruck zu hinterlassen. Wir machen das Fliegen wieder zum Erlebnis nicht nur, um von Ort A nach B zu kommen. Entspannt fliegen bei gutem Gewissen gegenüber der Umwelt. So könnte man sagen. Wie viele Kilometer bist Du schon geflogen und was war Dein weitester Flug? Ich habe rund 16.000 Flugkilometer hinter mir. Meine längste Distanz war ein Flug nach Ushuaja, Feuerland. Was sind Deine Lieblingsausblicke bei den Rundflügen mit Alpen Air? Das ist das Isar-Ursprungstal und der Jubiläumsgrat nahe der Zugspitze. Manchmal winken uns von dort die Kletterer zu, die auf dem Jubiläumsgrat unterwegs sind. Wie kam es zur Gründung von Alpen Air GmbH? Mein Geschäftspartner Moritz und ich trafen uns während der Pandemie am Ammersee und entwickelten dort die Idee zu Alpen Air. Diese haben wir dann unverzüglich mit Teilhabern am Unternehmen umgesetzt und sind nun seit knapp einem Jahr am Markt. Inzwischen beschäftigen wir acht Mitarbeiter und freuen uns, dass unser Geschäftsmodell so positiv angenommen wird. Was bietet Ihr an? Das ganze Jahr können unsere Kunden einen Rundflug buchen. Wir fliegen von Augsburg Richtung Dachau, über die Allinazarena und das Olympiazentrum in München, die Innenstadt mit Hofbräuhaus, weiter über Starnberger See und Walchensee Richtung Zugspitze, Eibsee, Plansee und wieder zurück nach Augsburg. Der Flug dauert ca. 1.15 Stunden. Dabei gibt es wirklich wahnsinnig viel zu sehen. Unser Flugzeug ist bestens ausgestattet mit Ledersitzen und BOSE Kopfhörern. Wer möchte, kann während des Flugs die Hintergründe in verschiedenen Sprachen mitverfolgen, oder mit dem Piloten sprechen. Du wohnst am Ammersee, wie bist Du hier gelandet? *grins* eigentlich mit dem Finger auf der Landkarte. Meine Frau und ich lieben das Bergwandern. So zog es uns Richtung Alpen. Ammersee fühlte sich gut an und so haben wir einen schönen Platz am Nordende des Ammersees gefunden. Was ist Dein Ausgleich privat? Mein Ausgleich sind meine Frau und meine Kinder, mit Ihnen das Leben genießen. Wir lieben Bergtouren und sind auch oft mehrere Tage auf den schönen Strecken der Alpen unterwegs. 🏆 1 Gold and 2 Bronze medals at Austrian Open! The Wien Taekwondo Centre team and our guests from Brazil and Spain had a very successful weekend in Innsbruck, with more than half of the team winning their first bouts, and a total of 13 matches won. 🥉 In Juniors, Mal Sahiti was the most successful Austrian sportsman, with a Bronze medal and two amazing victories, before having to withdraw from his semi-final due to an injury, caused by unsportsmanlike behavior of his previous opponent, after the stopwatch has ended. ✨ A 5th Place and 4.32 Points more on the Olympic Ranking for Lea Höglinger, with amazing matches against Serbia and Kazakhstan, losing the medal match to the finalist and experienced sportswoman from Germany. ✨ 9th Place for Katharina Lazic and Anastasija Stoickov. 3.02 Points more for the Olympic Ranking and we now have one more team member in the World Ranking list. Anastasija won her first match on her first G2 event but unfortunately fell to the winner of the event on her second match. 🥇João Diniz, our friend and guest for many years made it this time. 5 victories with amazing performance in the mats, he went through every match until he left with a gold medal, and some of the most emotional feelings from the tournament. 🥉 Our dear friend Arlet Ortiz left with a medal asking for more. Monday 18 November 2002 - second visit to Munich - Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt - the perfect Schwibbogen - Schäufele at the Tucher gastropub

EN Hi everyone. Twenty years ago I was still on my vacation to Germany, Scandinavia and Switzerland. This would be my last full day. I visited Munich, particularly Europapark, then the Marienplatz downtown. I did not spend long there, I went back to Nürnberg and did my remaining shopping. Then I packed up to go home on the 19th.

DE Hallo allerseits. Vor zwanzig Jahren war ich noch im Urlaub in Deutschland, Skandinavien und der Schweiz. Das wäre mein letzter ganzer Tag. Ich habe München besucht, besonders den Europapark, dann den Marienplatz in der Innenstadt. Ich hielt mich dort nicht lange auf, fuhr zurück nach Nürnberg und erledigte meine restlichen Einkäufe. Dann packte ich zusammen, um am 19. nach Hause zu gehen.

Jeg besøgte München, især Europapark, derefter Marienplatz downtown. Jeg tilbragte ikke længe der, jeg tog tilbage til Nürnberg og gjorde mine resterende indkøb. Så pakkede jeg sammen for at tage hjem den 19.

SE Hej allihopa. För tjugo år sedan var jag fortfarande på min semester till Tyskland, Skandinavien och Schweiz. Detta skulle vara min sista hela dag. Jag besökte München, särskilt Europapark, sedan Marienplatz i centrum. Jag tillbringade inte länge där, jag åkte tillbaka till Nürnberg och gjorde mina resterande shopping. Sen packade jag ihop för att åka hem den 19:e.

FR Salut tout le monde. Il y a vingt ans, j'étais encore en vacances en Allemagne, en Scandinavie et en Suisse. Ce serait ma dernière journée complète. J'ai visité Munich, notamment Europapark, puis la Marienplatz en centre-ville. Je n'y suis pas resté longtemps, je suis retourné à Nürnberg et j'ai fait mes courses restantes. Puis j'ai fait mes valises pour rentrer chez moi le 19.

Guten Morgen! Good morning!

Today would be my last full day in Europe until August 2003. I would visit Munich, and then come back to Nürnberg to do some final shopping before going back to the hotel. I would find the perfect gift for my mother, in the Handwerkerhof.

I managed to arrive at the hotel the previous evening at a more decent hour so I could wake up by 7 AM. I had breakfast, then took a shower and took the U1 to Nürnberg Hbf. I boarded the ICE train to Munich Hbf via Augsburg. So far it was the only ICE connection until years later when it went through Donauwörth and Ingolstadt. The train left about 8 AM, and made a stop about 8:35 AM in Augsburg Hbf. Then it continued to München Hbf. I was listening to the radio and happened to tune in Bayern 3. It was playing "Dilemma" by Nelly and Kelly. I cannot remember the other songs though, will have to refer to the audio tape which I had recorded at the time.

At München Hbf I accidentally dropped my radio. It did not completely break it but the hinge for the cassette would not completely close unless I jiggled it a bit. It was a misfortune. I went on to the U1-U2 station, bought a day pass, and took the U2 to the Am Hart station. I took a shuttle bus for the V Markt, or rather, the Walmart, which had replaced it. I used to go there a few times a week after work when I was living there in Summers of 1997 and 1998. Prices were cheaper than in downtown, especially for food. I bought a couple of beers to take home. Then I took the shuttle to Kieferngarten, the other stop with a U Bahn connection. I took it southbound to Marienplatz, through Münchner Freiheit that converges with the M3 that came from the west, namely Olympiazentrum which eventually was extended to Moosach.

I walked to the Viktualienmarkt and the Rathaus at Marienplatz. I also walked towards the Karlsplatz past the St. Michael church. I had been there in the winter when there was snow, months before. I did not go to the Hofbrauhaus until at least August 2003, so this time I just took the S Bahn back to Hbf and tried to find a train back to Nürnberg through Augsburg. At München Hbf, I took a 1:51 PM train to Nürnberg Hbf through Augsburg. I arrived about 3 PM.

In Nürnberg, I walked from Lorenzkirche to Weißer Turm and back. At one department store, I think, Hertie, I was at the World of Music, and listened to two CDs that I thought I should buy. One was the follow up CD Unbelievable by Sarah Connor. Months earlier, in Sevilla, Spain, I had bought her debut CD "Green Eyed Soul". I passed on that sadly. Another one was Otto Waalkes in concert. One of his songs was a parody of Toto's "Africa", called "Arschgesicht". That cracked me up.

I had to find something for my mother, and the time was getting short. 4 PM on a November afternoon is not exactly late, but if one is flying home the next day, it is better to find something to buy earlier than later. I went to the Handwerkerhof and found a shop that sold Schwibbogen. I found one powered by candles. I asked the saleslady to put it in a box, and she had the exact box to pack it in. I think it cost around € 30,00. I bought similar presents in that area, even a bottle of Frankish wine in a distinctive bottle, which is kind of flat, not the usual cylindrical type. Also I bought some delicious Lebkuchen to take back home. I also bought some candies for my colleagues at work to enjoy.

For supper, I went to the Tucher Mautkeller on Königstraße, towards Lorenzkirche. I had to go one flight of stairs down. I had a Schäufele, which was a pork shoulder, cole slaw and potato dumpling. I had it with glass of Tucher Dunkel. It was excellent. I paid about € 30 for the meal.

I walked back to Hbf and took the U1 back to Maximilianstraße, the bus 38 to Lenkersheimer Straße, and back to the hotel. I had to pack up my bags to see where I could put my beers, the Schwibbogen, wine and other things. Then I went to sleep.

I hope you will join me on my long journey home, through Washington DC Dulles and an unexpected "change of gauge", and a movie with shouts of "Jiggance!" from Portia de Rossi.
