i’m new to arthuriana but love your posts nonetheless
i am just curious about the many references to gawain sleeping with so many people when, to my understanding, in sir gawain and the green knight he specifically breaks this promiscuous behaviour and makes sure he doesn’t sleep with the wife of the duke
(i apologize if this is a stupid question!)
hello anon!
welcome to arthuriana and thank you so much for the kind words. this is not a stupid question at all! the truth is gawain is nothing if not inconsistent between texts haha. he's different from other knights such as lancelot who pines solely for guinevere across text after text, in that it seems every author wanted to create their own special gal for gawain. he therefore has numerous women attached to him, and when readers try to reconcile those many texts into a single story thread, it gives the impression our mans gawain gets around! (and he does!) i have several examples here to illustrate this so i'll put it below a cut.
for all the textual variance, sir gawain and the green knight is the exception that proves the rule—meaning that it's perhaps the only text in which gawain is abstinent. we know this because one of the five virtues attributed to the five points of his pentacle crest on his shield is chastity.
Tumblr media
furthermore, on the wife's second seduction attempt, gawain pleas his own inexperience with "love" (ie: women).
Tumblr media
whether or not that's true is up for debate, but it's worth mentioning, as it's a departure from other texts where his virile prowess is well-known, and in the knight of the two swords, he openly boasts about his own attractiveness and popularity. (humble guy, that gawain!)
Tumblr media
there are several examples of gawain's reputation with the ladies preceding him and actually benefitting his odds of getting laid. one of my favorites is from lancelot part II in the vulgate. gawain had just cured his brother agravaine of an illness and agravaine's amie basically wingwoman's her sister.
Tumblr media
goated of her. so gawain pencils it in on his calendar. later, he locates the castle, sneaks in, and succeeds in bedding the maiden. she's not named here, although malory later refers to her as "the lady of lys," and accredits her as the mother of gawain's three sons, (although the couple never formally wed).
Tumblr media
among the strangest of examples is the middle english text the carle of carlisle, in which the carle brings gawain to the bedchamber and orders him to make out with his wife. but things quickly heat up...
Tumblr media
so the carle stops gawain from outright cuckholding him, then leads gawain to his daughter's chambers, gives them his blessing, and locks them inside. at the end of the text, gawain marries her.
Tumblr media
now i would be remiss not to mention my beloved the wedding of sir gawain and dame ragnelle. i think it's notable that ragnelle specifically asks for gawain by name, much like the lady of lys did (according to her sister and her warm reception of him).
Tumblr media
now the conclusion of this poem brings us to another theme of gawain's which ties into his many partners, and that is his consistent subservience to ladies. he breaks the curse on ragnelle by granting her "sovereignty" in the relationship. this seems to be another aspect of character which sets gawain apart from other knights, as this is not a chaste expression of courtly love, but a precursor to fornication, and draws the attention of strong-willed ladies, such as ragnelle, with whom he is "a coward," or according to the translation notes, "submissive."
Tumblr media
then again in roman van walewein, he's already famous by the time he meets his ladylove, ysabele, and whilst tied up in her father's prison, he leaves the decision of his own life in her hands.
Tumblr media
which then results in their coming together because this is a gawain story and he always gets the girl.
Tumblr media
even in the post vulgate, which we can all agree portrays every single character at their absolute worst (and is therefore invalid<3), gawain's choice of words consistently upholds the lady's desires above his own. at first, gawain intended wingman for pelleas by pretending he, pelleas, was dead to begrieve arcade. he discovers instead that she's elated by pelleas's supposed passing, so she and gawain fall in love. but even after admitting his feelings, he still takes great pains to frame the final crossing of that line as her choice, and only relents when she makes her intentions plain.
Tumblr media
he might also just like it when women boss him around if his treatment from orgeluse in parzival by wolfram von eschenbach is any indication.
Tumblr media
similarly to the knight of two swords, in parzival, gawain is aware of his fame, fosters it, and then employs his orgeluse brain worms as a motivation for sparing lives instead of like...morality.
Tumblr media
i think what's particularly interesting about gawain's relationship history is that many of his partners are named, whereas it's pretty common for damsels and maidens in medieval texts to exist without identities of their own. there are so, so many named, interesting, fully developed women linked to gawain, it's actually pretty awesome! here are a few more:
lunette in yvain: knight of the lion by chrétien de troyes...
Tumblr media
amurfina in the crown by heinrich von dem türlin...
Tumblr media
bloiesine in the 4th perceval continuation by gerbert de montreuil...
Tumblr media
marjorie in gawain and marjorie by oscar fay adams (if we extend our search through the 20th century!)...
Tumblr media
and on and on forever! so in conclusion, gawain has been pulling bitches for many hundreds of slutty, slutty years, and from what modern retellings i've read, authors have no intention of interrupting this trend. i hope that helps clear things up somewhat. thanks for the ask!

Top 50+ Tracks of the Year 2019
Selamat menikmati

3 10 14 16 22 25 ? Love ur blog btw
Thank you, I appreciate it very much! Feel free to drop by my dms if you want to chat!
3. are you top or bottom or switch ?
I am asexual, soooo... nothing, really..? I’d say I have the top energy with the bottom demeanor.
10. describe your fashion sense
Gothic and sophisticated with a tendency towards extravagance. I never wear colors. My style is part dark academia, part modern vampire and part victorian dandy. What can I say, Oscar Wilde would be proud of me.
14. do you like hugs and cuddles ?
I love them but only coming from selected few people.
16. tall boys or short boys ?
Height doesn’t really matter to me, personality does.
22. what are your favourite bands/artists ?
Erm...
Tumblr media
Let’s just say that Wardruna, Gaahls WYRD, Lindy Fay Hella, Adam Hurst, Dead Can Dance, Loreena McKennitt, Mark Lanegan and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds are my favorites this week.
25. how would you describe your personality ?
People usually describe me as artistic, introverted and aloof.

Frederick Martin MacMurray (August 30, 1908 – November 5, 1991) was an American actor and singer who appeared in more than 100 films and a successful television series during a career that spanned nearly a half-century, from 1930 to the 1970s.
His career as a major movie leading man began in 1935, but his most renowned role was in director Billy Wilder's 1944 film noir Double Indemnity, with costars Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson. From 1959 through the 1960s, MacMurray appeared in numerous Disney films, including The Absent-Minded Professor, The Happiest Millionaire and The Shaggy Dog. In 1960, he turned to television as Steve Douglas, the widowed patriarch on My Three Sons, which ran on ABC from 1960–1965 and CBS from 1965–1972.
Fred Martin MacMurray was born in Kankakee, Illinois, the son of Maleta (née Martin) and Frederick Talmadge MacMurray, both natives of Wisconsin. His aunt, Fay Holderness, was a vaudeville performer and actress. Before MacMurray was two years old, his family moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where his father was a music teacher. They then relocated within the state to Beaver Dam, where his mother was born in 1880. He later attended school in Quincy, Illinois before earning a full scholarship to Carroll College (now Carroll University) in Waukesha, Wisconsin. At Carroll, MacMurray played the saxophone in numerous local bands. He did not graduate from the college.
MacMurray, as a featured vocalist, recorded in 1930 with the Gus Arnheim Orchestra on "All I Want Is Just One Girl" on the Victor label. and with George Olsen on "I'm In The Market For You" and "After a Million Dreams". Before signing with Paramount Pictures in 1934, he appeared on Broadway in Three's a Crowd (1930–31) and alongside Sydney Greenstreet and Bob Hope in Roberta (1933–34). In his early career, MacMurray played clarinet and tenor sax with the Gus Arnheim Orchestra (1930-31).
Later in the 1930s, MacMurray worked with film directors Billy Wilder and Preston Sturges and actors Barbara Stanwyck, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and, in seven films, Claudette Colbert, beginning with The Gilded Lily (1935). He co-starred with Katharine Hepburn in Alice Adams (1935), with Joan Crawford in Above Suspicion (1943), and with Carole Lombard in four productions: Hands Across the Table (1935), The Princess Comes Across (1936), Swing High, Swing Low (1937), and True Confession (1937).
Usually cast in light comedies as a decent, thoughtful character (The Trail of the Lonesome Pine 1936) and in melodramas (Above Suspicion 1943) and musicals (Where Do We Go from Here? 1945), MacMurray became one of the movie industry's highest-paid actors of the period. By 1943, his annual salary had reached $420,000, making him the highest-paid actor in Hollywood and the fourth-highest-paid person in the nation.
Despite being typecast as a "nice guy", MacMurray often said his best roles were when he was cast against type, such as under the direction of Billy Wilder and Edward Dmytryk. Perhaps his best known "bad guy" performance was that of Walter Neff, an insurance salesman who plots with a greedy wife (played by Barbara Stanwyck) to murder her husband in the film noir classic Double Indemnity (1944). In another turn in the "not so nice" category, MacMurray played the cynical, duplicitous Lieutenant Thomas Keefer in Dmytryk's 1954 film The Caine Mutiny.[7] Six years later, MacMurray played Jeff Sheldrake, a two-timing corporate executive in Wilder's Oscar-winning romcom The Apartment, (1960) with Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon.
In 1958, he guest-starred in the premiere episode of NBC's Cimarron City Western series, with George Montgomery and John Smith. MacMurray's career continued upward the following year, when he was cast as the father in the popular Disney Studios comedy, The Shaggy Dog. Then, from 1960 to 1972, he starred on television in My Three Sons, a long-running, highly rated series, the role for which most contemporary fans remember him. Concurrent with My Three Sons, MacMurray stayed busy in films, starring as Professor Ned Brainard in Disney's The Absent-Minded Professor (1961) and in the sequel Son of Flubber (1963). Using his star-power clout, MacMurray had a provision in his My Three Sons contract that all of his scenes on that series were to be shot in two separate month-long production blocks and filmed first. That condensed performance schedule provided him more free time to pursue his work in films, maintain his ranch in Northern California, and enjoy his favorite leisure activity, golf.
Over the years, MacMurray became one of the wealthiest actors in the entertainment business, primarily from wise real estate investments and from his "notorious frugality". After the cancellation of My Three Sons in 1972, MacMurray made only a few more film appearances before retiring in 1978.
In the 1970s, MacMurray appeared in commercials for the Greyhound Lines bus company. Towards the end of the decade, he was also featured in a series of commercials for the Korean chisenbop math calculation program.
MacMurray was married twice. He married Lillian Lamont (legal name Lilian Wehmhoener MacMurray, born 1908) on June 20, 1936, and the couple adopted two children, Susan (born 1940)[citation needed] and Robert (born 1946).[citation needed] After Lamont died of cancer on June 22, 1953, he married actress June Haver the following year. The couple subsequently adopted two more children—twins born in 1956—Katherine and Laurie. MacMurray and Haver's marriage lasted 37 years, until Fred's death.
In 1941, MacMurray purchased land in the Russian River Valley in Northern California and established MacMurray Ranch. At the 1,750-acre ranch he raised prize-winning Aberdeen Angus cattle, cultivated prunes, apples, alfalfa, and other crops, and enjoyed watercolor painting, fly fishing, and skeet shooting. MacMurray wanted the property's agricultural heritage preserved, so five years after his death, in 1996, it was sold to Gallo, which planted vineyards on it for wines that bear the MacMurray Ranch label. Kate MacMurray, daughter of Haver and MacMurray, now lives on the property (in a cabin built by her father), and is "actively engaged in Sonoma's thriving wine community, carrying on her family's legacy and the heritage of MacMurray Ranch."
He was a staunch supporter of the Republican Party. He joined Bob Hope and James Stewart to campaign for Richard Nixon in 1968. In 1980, he campaigned alongside Charlton Heston and Dean Martin for Ronald Reagan.
A lifelong heavy smoker, MacMurray suffered from throat cancer in the late 1970s, and it reappeared in 1987. He also suffered a severe stroke during Christmas 1988 which left his right side paralyzed and his speech affected, although with therapy he was able to make a ninety percent recovery.
After suffering from leukemia for more than a decade, MacMurray died from pneumonia at age 83 in November 5, 1991 at his home in Santa Monica, California. His body was entombed in Holy Cross Cemetery. In 2005, his widow, actress June Haver, died at aged 79, and her body was entombed with him.

The Water Carriers, Oscar Fay Adams
Text ID: Here Tristram once had drunk with fair Iseult, / Mark's wife, and laught to see the shining drops / Slip thro' her fingers, when she held her hand / Cupwise, that he might drink therefrom. And here / Had sweet Sir Percivale once stopt to drink, / Returning from the Quest of Holy Grail; / Here, too, had Pelleas, the bright boy knight, / A brief hour linger'd, flying from the court / In that dark time when all his early faith / In woman's virtue died, and good Sir Bors, / The false Gawain, the pure Sir Galahad, / And many more of that great Table Round / Had drunk from these sweet waters to their gain.

Hollywood Legends Never Grow Old
It all started with Vampira. (I wonder how many stories start that way?) I first read about her in a special edition of Rue Morgue magazine: Rue Morgue Library #2, Horror Movie Heroes. My fascination led me to Vampira: Dark Goddess of Horror by W. Scott Poole, both a biography for Ms. Maila Nurmi and a cultural study of the middle-American anxiety that contributed to the creation of her alter ego: Vampira.
I found out through Poole’s book that after she passed away in 2008, Vampira’s fans and admirers chipped in to have her remains interred at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Now the scene for onscreen funerals and off-screen social events, many Hollywood greats rest in peace on Santa Monica Boulevard.
When I first visited Los Angeles as an adult in 2015 with my husband Adam, best friend Kris, and mother-in-law Jessica, I took them on a hunt for Vampira’s final resting place.
While circling around the pond in the Garden of Legends, I saw my mother-in-law inch towards a duck resting in the grass. “Don’t pet the duck, Jessica,” I warned. I continued walking northwest when I heard: “Shit! The little fucker bit me!”
We eventually found Vampira, after visiting Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Jr., Cecil B. DeMille, Jayne Mansfield, and Tyrone Power. I grinned like crazy in photos posed next to my spooky idol, a happy ending to my first “grave hunt” of many. What a rush!
Tumblr media
One year and several apartment applications later, I took friends to Hollywood Forever whenever they visited me in Los Angeles, always searching for someone “new-to-me”: Peter Lorre, the Talmadge Sisters, Janet Gaynor and her ex-husband Adrian, John Huston, Fay Wray…
Once I built up the courage to drive on California highways and interstates on my own (honestly, the wait wasn’t very long), I moved on to bigger fish: Forest Lawn Glendale, Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, and Westwood Memorial Park. I found quiet sanctuary in a bustling city of millions. I admired the statuaries and murals, the labyrinths and mausoleums. The mixture of religious art and political dogma, plus a good dose of masonic imagery, occasionally unnerved me. And sometimes, amongst the crosses and stars of David, I spotted inverted pentagrams. As above, so below, I suppose.
Some of my favorite memories of visiting and living in LA occurred in cemeteries. I will forever treasure the time I spent in front of Oscar Levant, the Freed Unit’s resident hypochondriac, perfectionist, and wise guy. I spent over an hour searching for Fritz Lang. My sister found Buster Keaton because his grave doubles as a PokeStop. I sneaked over the security chain to get a closer look at Clara Bow. I became a morbid tourist.
Tumblr media
I figure, since I’m not a professional historian or researcher, how else could I ever get this close to Hollywood history without undertaking a book project and applying to peruse university and Academy archives? (I have since discovered the magic of the Hollywood Heritage Museum, but that’s a whole other blog post!)
I know I’m not the only movie fan with this macabre hobby of touring gravesites. In fact, many take it a step further by using paper and pencil to make rubbings of headstones. Others even befriend local groundskeepers to gain access to “private” gardens that house the likes of Mary Pickford and Humphrey Bogart. If only I had the chutzpah!
Every autumn, my husband and I travel to Los Angeles for #SpookTrip, our once-a-year horror-centric free-for-all. This year, I made multiple excuses to make detours and visit two of my favorites, Judy Garland and Bette Davis, and two new-to-me graves of screen legends: Charles Laughton and Vincente Minnelli. I hope that by paying my respects and sharing my enthusiasm for their work, I can help continue their legacies and teach future generations about their contributions to film. But also, I just really like graveyards.
