A couple new pages of Sunpiercer are finally live! I’ve had to go on a pretty long hiatus for this due to some tight deadlines in my comics work, but I definitely want to be better about carving out some time to work on my own project. Hopefully I’ll be better about getting more pages flowing soon!
If you’re liking Sunpiercer, please do let me know, and also give it some love at

Hit those like and share buttons! Thanks!

This lore is so neat! I love Japanese mythology. Is the setting an original one or part of a pre-existing one?
part of a pre-existing one! Most of y’all can probably guess what, aha ^^

Druids of Pestilence
(more spare character concepts - this time inspired by These Posts by  /u/BEEF_SWELLINGTON (the best name) and /u/thestray, as well as @outlandidol‘s Druid of the Rot concept)
Druids of Pestilence revere the facets of nature that most people consider unclean. They see decay and decomposition as integral parts of the cycles of the balance and focus on the ways that death sustains new life in all different forms. This connection to death & decay brings them into contact with all manner of insects, fungi, diseases, and pests. Many mistakenly believe that druids only champion life and new growth – the druids of pestilence remind us that death has a part to play in nature as well.
This morbid fascination with death is a far cry from necromancy, however. Perhaps more than most druids the Druids of Pestilence abhor undeath in all its forms and see meddling in the natural decomposition of dead things as a great evil. Every necromancer’s spell prevents strength from returning to the earth from whence it came and they are fierce opponents of this injustice
In their quest to ensure the balance of nature is maintained, Druids of Pestilence can call on a range of specialist tools. Their connection to the deathlier parts of nature gives them a power over natural poisons and diseases that can be used to help or harm. Alongside that they augment the normal druidic communion with plants to encompass the flora and fungi involved in decomposition, calling up virulent and unfamiliar fungal growths to deter foes, and even revitalising themselves and the land by swiftly decaying the bodies of their fallen foes.
The iconic spell that gives these druids their name, however, is their influence over insects. Calling on flies, beetles, locusts, and other swarming creatures to a variety of effects terrifies many opponents and can degrade and demoralise a foe before they have any idea what to do. It is even suggested that the most powerful of these druids can shapeshift into insect swarms though this has never been confirmed.
The dedicated Druid of Pestilence is a maligned and misunderstood figure and many lead solitary lives – but death and decay is found everywhere, and every druidic race has some practitioners who see its importance and potential.
Penny Thistlewort ran her fingers through the ears of corn. Her dark robes would have struck a stark contrast against the golden crop were it not for the cover of nightfall outside the orcish farmstead. In Gilneas she had protected her village’s farms from blights and blackflies – tonight her magic would bring only starvation.
Zinjo the Swarm stood at the heady of the rocky hilltop and raised his arms to the air. The troll war band kept deadly silent watching as the hapless humans hacked their way through the Stranglethorn jungle, tramping and cutting and cursing, oblivious to the pain that was coming. The air began to buzz with a million wings.
Menel’thin’s spellwork began to take hold. The numberless worms and insects beneath the field had answered her call and the soil started to shift and mire. Within seconds a fissure opened and the advancing skeletons were consumed by the earth. They never should have been taken from it to begin with.
Harnul Hawkseye walked the cracked earth of the Barrens in silence. The sun beat down with fierce heat. All around him were the remains of a battlefield; broken bodies, scattered arms, blood in the dirt. War had ravaged this place. But with his powers he would see the lifeblood of these warriors give strength back to the land they had so damaged.
Obvs this is all headcanon stuff – no Blizzard lore states there is a group of Druids whose focus is pestilence and decay, but a little creative liberty doesn’t do any harm. Druids can and do focus on particular facets of nature and this is what I imagine this idea would look like when applied to the Warcraft setting.
Portraying this in-game is quite hard; there’s no easy shapeshift option, and many of the archetypal abilities I listed have been removed from the game (still salty about insect swarm going). But as ever, gear sets and emotes will see you through, as well as a raft of new toys and battle pets.
Feel free to use, edit or critique as you fancy!
