I know pterodactyls are technically not dinosaurs, nor are they a species. What's the difference between pterosaurs and pteranodons?
(Does people calling them pterodactyl bother you at all?)
Pterosauria: the large category that contains all "pterodactyls". doesn't contain all flying reptiles thanks to, well, dinosaurs, but all flying reptiles that AREN'T dinosaurs are in this group (iirc). Can be referred to as Pterosaurs
Pterodactyloidea: the vast majority of pterosaurs, which can all be called "pterodactyls". usually have short tails, as opposed to long tailed pterosaurs outside of this group. Includes Pteranodon.
Pterodactylus: the original Pterodactyl, this pterosaur was discovered early and given this name. Even if you don't call other pterosaurs pterodactyls, you can call this one that, because it's literally its name
Pteranodon: a specific genus of derived pterosaur, so within pterodactyloidea (in fact, its in the sub group Eupterodactyloidea)
people calling them pterodactyls only bothers me a little bit, because by all accounts, the name of the group should have been "Pterodactylia" to begin with. the fact that it's pterosauria is extremely annoying for scicomm because it really didn't have to be

Quick reminder for everyone:
PTERODACTYLS ARE NOT DINOAURS 😭
They are pterosaurs, a separate species of extinct reptile. The difference comes down to their bone structure I'm pretty sure, but as a general rule of thumb, pterosaurs are the ones that fly. (With SO MANY exceptions like microraptors)

Bandai Pocketzaurus Scissors. I coveted the orange ones for a while, but these green ones look better. I also love the little Rodan-esque mascot.

Pterodactyl precedes Europe by two hours
Today I had to get up a couple hours earlier than usual for a medical procedure (I’m fine). Now, I rarely use an alarm clock because I have ADHD and while I can fall asleep pretty fast (after years of learning), I wake up every cycle or so, especially in the morning. So I was sure I would wake on time. There was just one problem remaining: actually get out of my bed.
And then, this morning, after a weird dream (finding a vet to help my sister’s mouse-sized cat, after a radio columnist I never met in real life made fun of me, a man told me he knew a trusted vet and send me to a clinic in a recently demilitarized zone in kinda US-occupation in Middle East - don’t ask), a sentence suddenly appeared on my head and began to burn in a red light:
“Pterodactyl precedes Europe by two hours.”
I knew immediately that it would make a great shitpost on Tumblr, and also that if I fell asleep again I would forget it. So thanks to this sentence, I got up and crossed the room to my desk to write it on a loose paper, with all the bleary-eyed concentration I was able to muster at “It’s nearly time to get up” AM.
And then since I was up, I opened the blinds and went to get breakfast.
Thank you, pterodactyls.

Sinbad and the Lost Continent
Tumblr media
Inspired by the accounts of Sinbad the Sailor’s seven escapades, another Baghdadi by the same name has ventured out into the Indian Ocean in search of the treasures of ancient Lemuria. Before having even landed on the lost continent’s shores, this Sinbad’s already run into trouble with its indigenous wildlife!
The Sinbad you see here is actually the second of two characters named Sinbad in the 1001 Arabian Nights. He is a poor landsman to whom the famous sailor narrates his seven adventures back in Baghdad (then under the rule of the Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid). One wonders if he might have been inspired by the other Sinbad to strike it rich out on the high seas!
