re your question about reporting and blocking bots:

threewaysdivided wrote a good explanation of how the boys are using your blog to make their content seem more legitimate: “Likely a form of what's known as "blackhat SEO". Search engines give priority to sites that are associated with reputable sites so if the bot-accounts are following legitimate tumblrs with the handle.tumblr.com URLs and then also following accounts that promote the porn sites it can game the association metrics search engines look for. Basically middlemen tools for pornsites.”

so no, bots don’t hurt you directly if you know not to click on their links, but not reporting them as spam and blocking them means that they start to look safer, increasing the chances that someone will click on a link, which will encourage the person with the bot program to keep making more. but if the bots are reported and blocked before their links get any traffic, the person/people responsible are likely to give up faster

For my friend, @ralfmaximus. A brief primer on who votes for the Oscars.

Academy members are divided into branches (directing, editing, etc.). Members of each section do the nominating for their particular awards. Then in the final round, everyone votes for everything. Source.

There are 18 branches of the Academy. To become a member, you must be sponsored by two current members. The candidate must have demonstrated 'exceptional achievement in the field.' Nominees are automatically considered and do not require sponsorship. Source. If you qualify in multiple branches, you have to select one.

As I understand it -- though I could not find a source for this -- membership is for life. So aging members definitely affect the overall 'artistic taste' of the Academy. This can also explain some of the institutional issues that have been heavily discussed with respect to racism and sexism in the awards' recognition.

I was not able to find the current number of members online, but in the last several years they have been aggressively adding members with the stated goal of diversifying the voter pool. I would guess it's at just a little less than 10,000 people now based on last published numbers. They added 398 in 2023.

Among many others, Notable/interesting 2023 new members are Taylor Swift (music branch), K.K. Senthil Kumar (RRR) (cinematographers branch), and Maria Schrader (She Said) (directors branch).

Alas, this occurred in 1995 and the company is long gone.

The demo was actually conducted using his laptop browser opening his site off-line; no webserver involved. Just a collection of pages stored on his drive C: that frog-guy created using notepad.exe, an impressive feat at the time. Once he onboarded we let him host his frog menagerie on the corporate LAN but I don’t think we ever gave it public access.

Our project manager (also at the interview) nabbed the computer-frog instantly and I haven’t spoken with anybody from that organization since 1998, so… yeah.

If I had the froggy I’d show y'all. And yes, it’s all true.

Oh, I’ve heard of that weird Escon kit, I don’t even know where you’d find one of those these days, and I believe it renders the keyboard part unusable. If I ever end up with two of these I might try and track down a kit, or maybe the IBM 2741/2740 which was a Selectric Typeball style serial terminal.
