I first met Adam when I started working at a tiny game development studio in Boulder, Colorado back in 1998 called Devil’s Thumb Entertainment. I walked into the studio on my first day of work and I’m pretty sure The Cramps were playing full blast from his general direction. There he was, sun baked and surrounded with what at the time I assumed were rare Jaimie Hewlett sketches pasted up around him, loads of cds and flyers for rockabilly rollerderby raver chicks with squids on their heads. ‘Welcome to the monster factory!’ he said and I thought instantly ‘Oh hell yeah! I came to the right place!’ It didn’t take long to figure out that what I thought were Jaimie Hewlett drawings were actually his and to be quite honest were 10 times more appealing and hilarious. (No offense Jaimie!)

When I finally got the chance to see his apartment in Denver I realized I was stepping into the mind of a creative genius. His entire apartment from floor to ceiling, front to back was covered with his paintings, massive cardboard sculptural cat like gargoyles, christmas lights, intricate costumes (designed with little more than a leather jacket, cheap sombrero, toys from a thrift shop, black and silver spray paint and hot glue) flyers for previous rent parties from his old warehouse, Tank Girl comics, Low Rider and American Artist magazines, Thomas Pynchon novels and a constant stream of music. Every square inch was interesting and VITAL and ALIVE. This was an intellect far beyond anyone else I’d ever met and there was not a single hint of pretentiousness to him. His entire life was a beautifully structured and disciplined chaos. Even then I began to see that not only was I in the presence of greatness, I was in the presence of one of the more important illustrators of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He just didn’t know it yet and neither did anyone else. Quite frankly he wouldn’t give a shit if someone gave him that label. He simply wanted to come up with more ideas and get better at drawing. Period.

Since then we got into many beer soaked adventures that sometimes included late night bike rides through the city streets of Denver with a boom-box strapped to the back blasting Big Audio Dynamite with sparklers hanging off the handlebars(and some stiches on the scalp of yours truly). Dangerously drunken skateboarding with cap guns, ditching psychedelic parties to go laugh our asses off and throw giant rocks in a frozen river, concerts, weekend long patio surfing tours in the Colorado summers, trips to the reservoir to float around wearing finely crafted and thrilling 12pack headgear, lunchtime bike rides up to our favorite outdoor patio Rhumba in Boulder for $2 Red Stripes and then back to work again, and many hours working close to him and learning as much as I could about being an artist and a better human being. He once said to me “I may not be Mozart, but at least I can try to be the Pixies.” He just wanted to entertain people in any way he could.

In his last few days we spent together in the hospital we sat on his hospital bed listening to music for hours, talking, and drawing in our sketchbooks. Our conversations were tinted with what was happening for him in the moment certainly, but mostly we talked about friends, art, music, and life. We spoke without much nostalgia or finality, just very real and present and forward looking despite the circumstances. He kept drawing until he couldn't possibly draw anymore, squeezing every last ounce he could out of life, just as he always had.

Roguelite LitRPG Theorycrafting

I had a great idea for a litRPG that takes its inspiration from roguelites rather than JRPGs or Skyrim.

I do not have the time to write such a novel, and will not have time to write it into the foreseeable future. But I do have time for some theorycrafting:

A classic roguelite of the current generation has variable powers and powerups drawn from a small pool that change the character of the run over time. Maps and enemies are boundedly random. When you die, you might have some meta progression, which is usually in the form of unlocks. Sometimes this makes the game easier, but often it just adds in variety. You go until you win or die, and then you go again, starting from nothing.

To start with, I think this has to be a time loop, because it fits that pattern too well. I wrote a blog post about time loops, and would include some ideas and variations from there.

The protagonist starts every loop as a total scrub, but gets to select from a few options at the loop start (or just after) and then at either intervals or with things accomplished. The pool of powers needs to be fairly small, but large enough that we don't see repeats all that often. We want a protagonist who is forced to make the best of a bad situation.

There are a few cool things about this, but the biggest is that we get to see the protagonist solve the same problems in different ways. One one loop, getting into the compound is easy, because he has flight and invisibility, but on another loop, it requires a firefight because he's got a laser belly and can absorb flesh to regenerate. The protagonist presumably has goals, so we also have some stakes built in: all runs are not built the same. When you're on a "hot" run where it seems like everything is going your way, you can't immediately grind your way back to that if you fail. Stakes are one of the things that are sometimes lacking in time loops, so we're solving that problem as a byproduct.

Similarly, a weird power build can take the story in different places. You're able to walk through stone, and all of the sudden you realize that you can penetrate the defenses of the mage academy. You strike while the iron is hot, and uncover things that would, in a normal run, be locked away from you.

There are problems here. The biggest is that I think a lot of audiences would cry about the author's thumb being on the scale, because audiences will always cry about that no matter what. Which powers get offered to the protagonist on any given run will be under scrutiny though, and even things that aren't forced will feel like they might have been. Readers don't like that, particularly litRPG readers, who sometimes come to the genre for a sense of "fair play". I'm not sure there's a way around that, though this is one of the rare cases I feel like an author rolling dice might actually make sense, so long as it was done in a way that would be difficult to fake. This might make for a worse story though, since the author would have less control of the plot.

One of the other things that interests me is ... what if the world changed in the same way it does in a roguelite? In a normal time loop story, the world is static and predictable, but wouldn't it be interesting to write a story in a time loop that acted more like Rogue Legacy, where there are certain "anchors" and patterns to the world, but much that is random and different? The protagonist wakes in the same apartment building every time, but sometimes he's next to a park and other times it's a train station. There's a corner store three blocks away that's always exactly identical down to the misalignment of the Mars bars, always with the same woman with a streak of blue hair behind the counter. Is this meaningful, that everything changes except the things that inexplicably don't? Almost definitely. It's another mystery to unravel with every new run and a new, diverse set of powers under your belt.

There's a chance I write this at some point. There's always a chance. But I think sometimes it's good for me to sit down and think about the possibilities, then resign myself to moving on without devoting the next month's word count to something that's captured my fancy.

Where are the Mixed-Race Characters? Hiding out in the continuity errors, of course!

I've been inspired by /u/jotting_prosaist 's magnificent apocrypha: A Commentary on the Misinterpretation of “Notes on Racial Phylogeny” and the discussion in the comments. People really are interested in seeing more mixed-race characters in TES, and while we have an increasing number of such characters, and more on their way (if some of those Skyrim babies are ever born), there aren't that many.

But what if they've been under our noses the whole time? What if one of them is Belethor, our favourite Breton shopkeeper the Prima guide describes as Bosmer?

Now, before I go into the details here, I fully acknowledge that these racial discrepancies certainly began as continuity errors. But why not embrace them to give the NPCs deeper backstories and flesh out the world?

'Belethor' is a much more Bosmer-sounding name than Breton. That suggests the Prima Guide is based off an earlier draft in which he was a Bosmer, but that in game development, he was changed to a Breton. However, for in-world purposes, Belethor could have had a Bosmer or part-Bosmer parent who bequeathed him a Bosmer name to honour that part of his ancestry.

Aringoth, the owner of the bee hives in Riften, appears to be an Altmer, but is called a Bosmer by Vex and Brynjolf. Why can't he both?

Enthir appears to be a Bosmer but identifies himself in conversation as Altmer.

So they were like your kind? "Like the Altmer? Yes, I would say their culture quite possibly rivaled our own."

Hlidara Mothril in Oblivion is Countess Alessia Caro's Altmer advisor who is working with her to Imperialize Leyawiin. And yet, the court mage Tsavi calls Hlidara "Nibenean". What if, despite Hildara's Altmer appearance, she is more attuned to her Nibenese ancestry?

I'm sure there are more folk who are referred to as the "wrong" race. And interpreting the continuity errors as lore would make the world and the characters really interesting!

Further examples: Xatriks on Hlidara: Not to mention her Dunmeri name. Also Angaredhel. 

One dialogue mistakenly refers to him as "Angaredhel the Altmer" and his name is more typical of an Altmer name than a Dunmer name. However, two other dialogues correctly describe him as "Angaredhel the Dunmer".

And Mankar Camoran of course. Half of these inconsistencies may be actual mistakes though. Me:  Ooh, nice additions. I'm sure they start out as mistakes, but they can become lore. :) Someone asked why we needed more mixed-race characters.

Me: Because, given the world, there should be a lot more of them. We see mixed-race couples continuously in-game, but the people we meet rarely are presented as anything but pure [insert race here]. It's an impoverished version of a richer possible world. We can assume it's both game mechanics, and a limit on how much dialogue can be written for each character (most characters aren't going to tell you about their relations), but this lack of characters that don't fit inside homogenous racial slots has actually convinced a lot of TES players that race is, in fact, an immutable biological state in Elder Scrolls lore, even when the one text we have on the subject doesn't claim so. TES would definitely benefit from making this subject clearer. If you look at the game of Skyrim, I can think of two mixed-race characters: the Breton/Redguard Lylvieve siblings. That's ridiculously low. And we know absolutely nothing about their experience, so they're not interesting either in that respect. Until the games give us better examples (and ESO is doing a little bit of that), we're on our own imagining anyone interesting at all.

What fandoms do you write for? The Elder Scrolls universe, the Tolkien legendarium. Side note: isn't it funny how many more Silmarillion than Skyrim fics there are? Skyrim was one of the most popular games of the 2010s and the Silmarillion is an incoherent LOTR prequel that reads like the Bible. Wild.

What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Guess Who's Coming to Mordor (477), Fraternity (300), Wrong Side of the Bed (286), Hubris (186), Uncles (181). These are all Tolkien fics. Don't worry about it.

Do you respond to comments? Usually, unless I can't think of a clever enough reply or I just forget to.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Considering that Saint Sylvie is basically just a collection of comedy shorts, it has a surprisingly angsty ending.

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? In the Tolkien Fandom, The Fine Art of Being Prepared. In the TES-verse, Land of Ash and Heart.

Do you get hate on fics? Very rarely. I occasionally get folks pointing out typos which is embarrassing but honestly, probably needed.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind? ...yes, but I almost never post it on AO3.

Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Ok bear with me here. I once wrote a crossover between my original novel, set in 1860s Vienna, and the long-ass Victorian Tolkien AU that occupied my entire brain from 2018-2020.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? No, and if I did, I'd summon the Constables.

Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! I once had a Tolkien fic translated into Vietnamese. It was an honor. I do not speak Vietnamese.

I've received a lot of asks like this one so I wanna respond and clarify

I actually love getting asks and even anon asks. I prefer having anon on bc yk big boy blog and all that but also so that people can send me their silliest things.

I really do truly genuinely enjoy having this blog and especially interacting w it. I've made a lot of friends recently and it's just fun to be able to talk ab the cringe failgame from a decade ago. Both for myself and in front of such a large audience.

Ever since I became aware I'm literally in the top 10 on skyrim blogs (at #9 but still) some of my anons started making a lot more sense. The power of anonymity makes people braver, which is good for things like funny headcanons and such.

I don't really like having to turn anon off and god I hope I don't have to shut asks off entirely. Fortunately once I turned anon off my inbox became a lot more peaceful. Funny that.

If I were to compare the two I'm sure I've gotten much more love than hate, but hate is much louder than love. And I know me giving it attention doesn't help much of anything but on the other hand people can and do throw around serious words about an unserious video game on unserious posts from an unserious person.

Even if I ignored all of it, just having to see it can feel so draining. And it isn't just in my inbox. It's also in the tags. I've repeatedly tried to express how deeply uncomfortable I am, AS A JEWISH PERSON OF COLOR, with people throwing words like racist and genocide around all willy nilly over video game characters.

It trivializes those real world issues, that have affected me, my ancestors, and people like me, down to fucking. Skyrim discourse. It's extremely frustrating. And from what I can see I don't think anyone is doing it maliciously or to get a rise out of me. But I think the sheer weight of those words has gotten lost.

And not to pull another race card, but this is especially upsetting from white people. I'm not thrilled about the fact white people keep talking over me and other people of color in the fandom about what is and isn't racist.

But I do also see the love. I see the cats in my inbox and the lovely asks and people writing paragraphs to defend me (when tbh I haven't done anything wrong anyways but. Eh.) and it's genuinely very touching and sweet and even if I don't reply to it (there's a lot to reply to!) I do see it and I appreciate it.

And for the poll, I fully plan on seeing it through. Round 2 closes tomorrow after which I'll set up round 3/the semi finals and then we go to the championship!

I started this poll, also this blog, for fun. I want people to have fun. I want to have fun. And most of the time I do have fun! But with the uptick in activity that brings *gestures vaguely* what it does.

Tumblr is one of those very few websites with true anonymity. This and reddit are the only ones I can think of where it's not expected to have your name, face, or other info about you anywhere. Which is a rare blessing on today's internet but it makes people very audacious about what they can and can't say to me.

I think because of that anonymity it's easy to forget I'm a human person. I very much doubt some of things I've had said to me in the last 48 hours would still be said if it was face to face. I truly don't think someone would look me in the eye and tell me to kill myself over skyrim bullshit.

And the funny part of that is if they did, I'd probably laugh in real life. For the sheer ridiculousness of the statement. "Hey. You. End your life because of video game drama" spoken to me at the local Target would be funny to me. But with the anonymity it feels just as hurtful as I'm sure it's supposed to be.

Thanks for letting me ramble and such. I'm not really even sure what I'm trying to say with all this. Other than I'm human, you're human, we're all humans, and we'd do well to remember that. Please just be nice to each other..

Henwen: *manages to shake his head ever so slightly, practically naked in his arms and only just covered by his long silky white hair, body immobile, and terrified out of his mind*

Harkon: *lays him down on the velvet blankets and draws a knife from his belt, delighting in the look of fear it inspires in his little captive snow elf* shhh, I won’t use it on you, if you behave that is… *holds out his hand slicing his fingers and placing them in henwens mouth* Drink.

Henwen: *eyes wide, trying to pull away, only to fall into a trance as his tongue tastes it. Pupils blowing out wide until his eyes are almost completely dark, cheeks and lips flushing pink as a fever like hunger fills him* mmphh- *whines and starts to lap and drink the offering*

Harkon: *smiles watching him, red eyes glowing in the darkened cobweb filled room* that’s it… nice and easy. Soon you’ll be able to fetch your own, but for now, I’m all you need…

*The next morning*

Henwen: *wakes slowly, head aching and mouth dry, body feeling so cold and unnatural* hmnnn?… *looks down at himself to see the rather revealing robe he was left dressed in by the vampire lord* … *looks around the room to see signs of neglect, like this was once the marital chamber now left forgotten* … Kaidan- Taliesin- My friends! *gets up and immediately falls to the floor, body made for the sunlight, not the darkness of of cold harbour* ughh… *shakily pulls himself up using the bed posts and hurries to the curtains opening them and immediately hissing in agony as Auriels light burns him* AAAAAAAAGHHHHH!!!

Harkon: *suddenly grabs him from behind pulling him away and closing the curtains* My finch! Are you alright?

Henwen: *clawing at his face* IM BLIND! IM BLIND! IT HURTS-

Harkon: *grabs his hands and covers his eyes with his hands* shh, you’re not blind… give it a moment… *moves his hand*

Henwen: *blinks slightly and looks up at him so timidly* I- what?… why has Auriel forsaken me to this prison?…

Harkon: *smiles stroking his face* Auriel never cared for the beautiful things he made. He let your people die, let them suffer, and now he punishes you for something that wasn’t your fault yet again… *scoops him up with ease* He never cared for you, but I do, that’s why I gave you my gift…

Henwen: *so used to playing the ditsy prince damsel in distress act to get what he wants. Now terrified because he realises he really is the damsel in distress this time* p-please look after me?… *starts tearing up trying desperately to hold back a panic attack*

Harkon: *grins showing large, sharp teeth* Oh don’t worry my darling, I will… *kisses his hand*

Henwen: *only now just noticing the ring on his finger* I’m- im going to be sick-

*Meanwhile*

Kaidan: *on his horse riding back to fort dawnguard* Okay so we can’t scale the castle. That’s abundantly clear now.

Taliesin: *sitting behind Kaidan on the horse, skin dry and hair destroyed with saltwater waves after falling into the sea attempting to scale the castle and nearly drowning* Thank you for noticing. *huffs*

Lucien: well what do we do?!

Kaidan: we go back to fort dawnguard for backup. I hate leaving him there but if we go in there as we are now we’re all dead.

Inigo: *can clearly see how heartbroken and angry Kaidan is at himself over this and how he’s trying to hold it in to be the leader they need at the moment* Without wendy here you are in charge. I follow your orders brother. If you think we need backup I am with you.

Kaidan: thank you, brother… *sighs and keeps moving* let’s hurry, I don’t want him to spend a moment longer with those blood suckers.

Kerasil

What is the character’s go-to drink order?

A proper Green Pact Bosmer would never pass up a mug of jagga when offered. Takes milk drinker to another level, Nords could never survive a keg stand of jagga. Kerasil finds it hilarious that drinking milk is seen as something childish or weak as it's basically a staple drink in Valenwood.

More for her, needs more bug juice in it though.

Do they have any scars or tattoos?

Kerasil has sleeves on both her arms of twisting bold lines that she's especially proud of. Then there are a whole litany of other scars they've collected from reckless and foolish adventures, and then more while she's the Captain of the Guard doing reckless and foolish things on the clock. If we're going to go with the Vestige line she does have a giant knife scar in the center of her chest from when she was sacrificed to Molag Bal.

It's pretty gnarly and nasty looking, like a curse. So it's not very appealing and Kerasil does make it a point to cover it as much as she could so she doesn't have to keep seeing the moment when her whole life turned for the worst.

Describe the place where they sleep.

The only place Kerasil could ever consider laying her head down at night is at home. It is warm lights and a tight embrace from her husband. The scent of dinner on the wind and the sound of her children rushing into the room. It is a bed covered in plush furs from shared hunts with her husband in days of youth.

Her bedroom has nothing relating to her job, no trophies of her accomplishments to the city, very few trinkets of her adventures. There are plenty other spaces dedicated to these things, but the bedroom and where she gets to be safe and vulnerable is just made for her and her husband and that's how she wants it to be.

What is their grooming routine?

I talked about her grooming habits in another post, but I can use this time to describe it in better detail.

Yera when she can enjoys a long warm bath. Something to wash away the aches and pains of traveling on the road and spelunking into caves and ruins. Circumstances have it where she can't keep to Green Pact rules as tight, so she enjoys a mildly scented soap of pines as a luxury.

Once washed down, she is semi-forced to do an actual hair care routine. Yera typically doesn't put maximum effort to her hair other than finger brushing it and keeping dirt and leaves out of it but Lydia won't have it. So she has soap to rinse out all the dirt and keep her hair actually white instead of grey. Then properly dried and combed out until it's properly styled and laying flat without random frizz and fly aways.

Then if they need to head out somewhere public, Yera will start fussing over what outfits to wear and accessories to match with it. Are these boots a good match with these pants? Does this shirt fall nicely off my arms? Lydia, Lydia please be honest with me I can hear you laughing across the room. Lydia I need to show off, Maven is going to be in the Marketplace and I need to be better dressed than her.

Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child?

Yera is the oldest! She has one younger sister named Faylen whom was born when Yera was a grown adult. Bit of a surprise from Yera to her mom having another child so late, but welp that's elven lifetime and Faylen is Yera's entire world.

She got to help raise her baby sister, teach her how to shoot a bow for the first time. Watch her play in meadows freely under her watch. Taught her songs and dances they practice around the communal fire. Got to watch Faylen become a Spinner and grow into her own potential and give encouragement when she had the rare bouts of doubt. Faylen is the best sister Yera could ever ask for and she would tear the world apart if anything were to even look at her wrong.

Describe the shoes they’re wearing.

Yera... is an avid boot collector. Once she moved to Skyrim she knew she would not survive on the thin straps of leather that served as sandals in this snowy country. So she started investing in boots.

The first were a pretty basic set of traveling boots. Good quality leather, thick soles so that the rocks won't slice her feet into ribbons.

Then when she got into some money she got some nice knee high ones. Form fitting, sheath for a boot knife, extra padding to keep it quiet. Dark leather to match her time in the Thieves Guild.

And now? Now she has so many kinds of shoes and boots for every occasion.

This one for walking in town, this one for when we know we're going up the mountains. This one for the marshes and needs to be magically waterproof that marsh gets into her socks like no ones business. This one reinforced with dragonbones because there's a new dragon up on that mountain and we're going to kick it's ass 6 ways to Sundas.

If there is a boot out there, chances are Yera has bought it and added it to her collection.

What objects do they always carry around with them?

To go without saying that Yera does not go anywhere without a seeing cane. She has them in various styles, but she cannot leave the house without at least one of them on hand.

Even in the confines of her town and home, she usually keeps a dagger on her for self-defense. No one even bats an eye at that either, so it's convenient and accepted to have one carried around.

Otherwise, she doesn't keep a lot of other personal items. Most of them had to be left at home in Valenwood when she left so that she didn't have more identifying items to track her back to Silvenar. She got new personal items in Skyrim, but she still tries to cover her tracks and her family connections from the Thalmor as much as possible.

Now it's more important that she's Dragonborn than to find out her background. Which is why a dagger is always necessary no matter where she is. There is always dangers waiting around the corner...

WIP Wednesday

I posted this before I was tagged in anything but have since been tagged by @thequeenofthewinter and @throughtrialbyfire so thank you!!!

I actually have a WIP that I would like to share~ It's part of the next chapter of The Perfect Storm, and it's quite long so I've put some under the read more.

Given Whiterun’s delicate situation with regard to the ongoing war, and its central position in Skyrim which crossed over many roads and travel routes, linking hold to hold, it was not rare for Balgruuf to be receiving correspondences from the other Jarls of Skyrim. There would always be at least one per week, with some communications being more frequent than others – he couldn’t actually remember the last time that he had heard from Korir in Winterhold, whereas discussions with Siddgeir, Skald, and Thongvor Silver-Blood were held monthly.

But rare was the occasion that he would receive letters from both Windhelm and Solitude on the same day. Ulfric and Elisif, two Jarls at the complete opposite ends of Skyrim’s political spectrum. It was not the most welcoming of sights, seeing wax seals bearing the red wolf of Haafingar and the blue Bear of Eastmarch alongside each other in the hands of the apprehensive-looking Proventus.

Had it not been down to the fact that he was actually expecting a message from Ulfric, he would have taken the letters as a sign of the war inching ever closer to Whiterun’s doorstep. He recently had to reach out to him on the behest of Belethor, whose store – being a cornerstone of business in the city – had been closed for over a week on account of his goods being held up in Windhelm’s docks. With there being no general goods store, pressure was piling up on other vendors who were in turn reaching their own limits in terms of demand. There was only so long that such a position would be feasible without having to fall back on contingency supply plans, which he would much rather put into place when the war was no longer at a stalemate as opposed to as a result of supply issues.

It didn’t escape his notice, however, that this was not the first time that goods had been delayed when coming from Windhelm – and Proventus in turn remarked that it had all started happening ever since Elyse had clashed with Ulfric. Whether it was a direct result of that or not was another question, but not one that he would touch upon unless he had stronger evidence than mere correlation.

Leaning back on his seat in his study, forefinger and thumb rubbing against his chin and beard as he looked between the two letters, he decided that he would read the letter from Ulfric first, given that it was one that he had been anticipating. There was a small, nagging feeling in the back of his mind that he would likely need a strong drink once he had finished with it, but on the other hand, since when did communications with the other Jarls not ask for such?

Jarl Balgruuf, Rest assured that trade will resume imminently, but that additional and appropriate tolls and tariffs will need to be paid by either yourself or the recipient before anything can be released. An invoice from my steward will soon follow this letter once he has finished with summing up the costs. This accounts for the space which the goods have taken up, depriving Windhelm’s citizens of safe storage for their own wares and supplies, in addition to the burden which was placed upon both the city’s guards and the good Nords working at the docks. In future, I would recommend that you ensure that your citizens are not using illicit traders to acquire their goods. I will not tolerate dirty money infecting Skyrim’s economy. On the topic of fees and fines, I believe that your Thane has been ignoring attempts at communications regarding her fine for assaulting me, in addition to my attempts at apologising for my brash manner of speaking with her. It has taken much self-reflection to realise that I was on the wrong side of that situation, though her escalation was still not necessary. I would like to make reparations with her, but cannot with her ignoring me. Perhaps, as her Jarl, she will listen to you. It is also time that you start listening to me too. “Irileth…” He knew that his housecarl would be close enough to be able to hear him, she always was as of late. The door creaked open, the Dunmer in question being quick to emerge with the noise that she made being enough of an indication of the raised eyebrow on her face. “Could you please inform Proventus that I would like to have an urgent audience with Belethor before this evening?” he asked, not looking up from the letter on his desk but instead reaching out for some fresh parchment and a clean quill. “And before he asks, the discussion with the brothers from the Drunken Huntsman can be pushed back to tomorrow, I will have more time then and this matter is much more pressing.”

“Yes, my Jarl.”

With a quiet click, the door fell shut again and Balgruuf sighed. That feeling about needing a drink after reading the letter was on point, as usual. Fortunately, given that his work as of late was necessitating him needing more and more time in his study, he had been prepared for such an occasion and had a few bottles of Colovian brandy locked away in a cupboard – and by the Divines, he needed something strong.

Elisif’s letter would simply have to wait until later.

For the most part! Sometimes I don't really know what to say in response, but I appreciate every single comment I get. Like, I adore them all.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

(spoilers lmao) It's a tie I think, between Out on a Limb (in which Troy does die, but he saves Clementine and repays his debt, being remembered for the good choice he made in the end) and Electric Sheep (Dio and Luna's fates are left ambiguous, it's unclear if they're alive but at least they're together wherever they are)

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Any of the fluffier fics tbh, but a special mention for Taken by Storm. It's the last fic of the Nope series, and it shows that the gang is recovering from their ordeal and have hope for the future.

Do you get hate on fics?

I mean, I've seen offhand comments on Twitter, but honestly I haven't gotten any hate on Ao3 at least. :)

Do you write smut?

A tiny tiny bit. It's very rare. But we have Stay Classy for a direct smut thing, with like two other fics having references to sex. It's not really something I like to read or write, and have to be in a ver specific mood to write.

I... dunno. I have a few that probably won't ever see the light of day, but I'd rather make that decision and leave it at "everything might one day get posted, but I don't know".

What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm pretty good at descriptions, and putting out my best work possible. The latter is a result of my OCD not letting me post something without passing a very strict self-imposed "quality filter," but still. It does show in the final product, stressful as it is to get there.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Sticking with something. Sitting down and writing. Also making more happen in scenes, with more dialogue.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

I've tried to pepper in some Russian in both Out on a Limb and it's just blood under the bridge for the Russian characters, and also some Spanish in Vencido, but it's all Google translated haha.

It'll probably always be Out on a Limb. I worked so hard on it and I reedited it all and made it into a book through a website (I own the only copy so it's not illegal or anything).
