Pope Leo XIII's Prayer to St. Michael (Long Version; Latin & English)

Princeps gloriosissime caelestis militiae, sancte Michaël Archangele, defende nos in praelio et colluctatione, quae nobis adversus principes et potestates, adversus mundi rectores tenebrarum harum, contra spiritualia nequitiae, in caelestibus. Veni in auxilium hominum, quos Deus creavit inexterminabiles, et ad imaginem similitudinis suae fecit, et a tyrannide diaboli emit pretio magno. Praeliare hodie cum beatorum Angelorum exercitu praelia Domini, sicut pugnasti contra ducem superbiae luciferum, et angelos ejus apostaticos: et non valuerunt, neque locus inventus est eorum amplius in coelo. Sed projectus est draco ille magnus, serpens antiquus, qui vocatur diabolus et satanas, qui seducit universum orbem; et projectus est in terram, et angeli ejus cum illo missi sunt.

En antiquus inimicus et homicida vehementer erectus est. Transfiguratus in angelum lucis, cum tota malignorum spirituum caterva late circuit et invadit terram, ut in ea deleat nomen Dei et Christi ejus, animasque ad aeternae gloriae coronam destinatas furetur, mactet ac perdat in sempiternum interitum. Virus nequitiae suae, tamquam flumen immundissimum, draco maleficus transfundit in homines depravatos mente et corruptos corde; spiritum mendacii, impietatis et blasphemiae; halitumque mortiferum luxuriae, vitiorum omnium et iniquitatum.

Ecclesiam, Agni immaculati sponsam, faverrrimi hostes repleverunt amaritudinibus, inebriarunt absinthio; ad omnia desiderabilia ejus impias miserunt manus. Ubi sedes beatissimi Petri et Cathedra veritatis ad lucem gentium constituta est, ibi thronum posuerunt abominationis et impietatis suae; ut percusso Pastore, et gregem disperdere valeant.

Adesto itaque, Dux invictissime, populo Dei contra irrumpentes spirituales nequitias, et fac victoriam. Te custodem et patronum sancta veneratur Ecclesia; te gloriatur defensore adversus terrestrium et infernorum nefarias potestates; tibi tradidit Dominus animas redemptorum in superna felicitate locandas.

Deprecare Deum pacis, ut conterat satanam sub pedibus nostris, ne ultra valeat captivos tenere homines, et Ecclesiae nocere. Offer nostras preces in conspectu Altissimi, ut cito anticipent nos misericordiae Domini, et apprehendas draconem, serpentem antiquum, qui est diabolus et satanas, ac ligatum mittas in abyssum, ut non seducat amplius gentes.

Hinc tuo confisi praesidio ac tutela, sacri ministerii sacra sanctae Matris Ecclesiae auctoritate, [Si fuerit clericus qui ordinem exorcistatus suscepit, dicat: nostri auctoritate,] ad infestationes diabolicae fraudis repellendas in nomine Jesu Christi Dei et Domini nostri fidentes et securi aggredimur.

V. Ecce Crucem Domini, fugite partes adversae. R. Vicit Leo de tribu Juda, radix David. V. Fiat misericordia tua, Domine, super nos. R. Quemadmodum speravimus in te. V. Domine, exaudi orationem meam. R. Et clamor meus ad te veniat.

[Si fuerit saltem diaconus subjungat:] V. Dominus vobiscum. R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

Oremus.

Deus, et Pater Domini nostri Jesu Christi, invocamus nomen sanctum tuum, et clementiam tuam supplices exposcimus ut, per intercessionem immaculatae semper Virginis Dei Genitricis Mariae, beati Michaëlis Archangeli, beati Joseph ejusdem beatae Virginis Sponsi, beatorum Apostolorum Petri et Pauli et omnium Sanctorum, adversus satanam, omnesque alios immundos spiritus, qui ad nocendum humano generi animasque perdendas pervagantur in mundo, nobis auxilium praestare digneris. Per eumdem Christum Dominum nostrum.

Amen.

O GLORIOUS Prince of the heavenly host, Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle and fearful warfare that we are waging against the principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits. Come thou to the assistance of men, whom Almighty God created immortal, making them in His own image and likeness and redeeming them at a great price from the tyranny of Satan. Fight this day the battle of the Lord with thy legions of holy Angels, even as of old thou didst fight against Lucifer, the leader of the proud spirits and all his rebel angels, who were powerless to stand against thee, neither was their place found any more in heaven. And that great dragon was cast forth, the ancient serpent, who is called the devil and satan, who seduces the whole world; and he was cast forth upon Earth, and his angels were sent with him.

But behold! the ancient enemy of mankind and a murderer from the beginning has been fiercely aroused. Changing himself into an angel of light, he goes about with the whole multitude of the wicked spirits to invade the earth and blot out the Name of God and of His Christ, to plunder, to slay, and to consign to eternal damnation the souls that have been destined for a crown of everlasting life. This wicked serpent, like an unclean torrent, pours into men of depraved minds and corrupt hearts the poison of his malice, the spirit of lying, impiety and blasphemy, and the deadly breath of impurity and every form of vice and iniquity.

Be favorable to Thy Church, the Bride of the Lamb without spot, whose enemies have filled to overflowing with gall and inebriated with wormwood. They have laid profane hands upon Her most sacred treasures. Where the See of the most blessed Peter and the Chair of Truth has been constituted as a light to the nations, there they have placed a throne of their abomination and impiety; so that with the Pastor struck, they may prevail to disperse the flock.

Therefore, most invincible Leader, be with the people of God against this spiritual wickedness and bring about victory. Thou art venerated by Holy Church as Her guard and patron; Thou art glorified as our defender against the impious powers of earth and of hell. Unto thee the Lord hath handed over the souls of the redeemed to be placed in happiness above.

Entreat the God of peace, to obliterate satan beneath our feet, lest he prevail further to hold men captive, and to injure the Church. Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that the mercy of the Lord may swiftly overtake us, and apprehend the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and satan, and send him bound into the abyss, so that he may seduce the nations no more.

Henceforth having been confided to thy escort and protection, we sacred ministers by the authority of the Holy Mother Church [if recited by a cleric of the order of exorcist or above, say instead: by our authority], do undertake to repel the infestations of diabolical deceit in the Name of Jesus Christ, Our God and Lord.

V. Behold the Cross of the Lord; be scattered hostile powers. R. The Lion of the tribe of Juda has conquered, the root of David. V. Let Thy mercies be upon us, O Lord. R. As we have hoped in Thee. V. O Lord, hear my prayer. R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

[If recited by at least a deacon add the following:] V. The Lord be with you all. R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

O God, and Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we invoke Thy Holy Name, and we humbly implore Thy clemency so that, through the intercession of Mary, the Immaculate ever-Virgin Mother of God, of blessed Michael the Archangel, of blessed Joseph, the Spouse of the same blessed Virgin, of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the Saints, Thou may deign to offer us aid against satan, and all the other unclean spirits, who wander through the world to injure the human race and to destroy souls. We ask this through Christ Our Lord..

Amen.

Ectober Day 10: Exorcism - Mimicry

Ghosts aren’t that different from demons. And Danny’s got no problem fucking with a priest.

Danny’s sitting, curling his ghostly tail around, on a rooftop building when he spots him. He shows up in an arguably insanely pompous Mustang, the kind with wood side panelling. Danny tilts his head as he watches the car park, at least whoever wasn’t enough of a stick-up-the-ass to double park. The guy stepping out in head to toe black, nearly looking like he’s wearing a dress. At first, Danny figured it was some goth, but sticking his head invisibly through the hotel lobby ceiling -curious about this stranger in his town, his lair- the guy spoke like his car looked; professional but egotistical. Spotting the little white on the guys neck only makes Danny internally groan. Priests. Well, technically only one but still. Though he is a little curious, there had never been one of their types here before. Probably thought ghosts were demons or something.

For whatever reason the guy seems to intimidate Jamey the receptionist, watching as she’s clearly trying to get the guy away from her and is trying not to touch the guy. Which only seems to make priest dude suspicious, intentionally grabbing and holding onto her hand and looking like he’s searching her eyes. Danny floats down closer, invisible of course, at this, in case this guy is legit dangerous and tries to attack her or something.

Thankfully, he lets go and heads to his room with a smile. Jamey shaking herself off after a bit. Danny hangs around the lobby for a bit to make sure she’s fine and priest guy doesn’t come back.

Danny sniffs out the guys' room and promptly puts a SpookSpot, a camera that looks like a little black ghost sticker, to watch priest guys door. And heads back to proper patrolling and enjoying the late afternoon sky.

Two day’s later Danny’s pretty well forgotten about the guy. He just seems to be wandering the town, muttering to himself, and nodding at things. The only real beef Danny had with the guy was that he was creeping people out.

But apparently, the guy was just patient, or spent a lot of time plotting. As Danny comes upon him doing...something? to the Box Ghost of all ghosts. He was seemingly chanting and making erratic hand motions. While the Box Ghost just looks really confused. Eventually, the Box Ghost, seeing a lost cause, shouts, “BEWARE!!!”, and promptly flies off.

The priest looks pleased with himself for whatever reason.

The next day Danny groans at spotting the priest, with a visitors badge, wandering the halls of Casper high, hands clasped behind his back and occasionally nodding at things.

Tucker pokes Danny, “you know, your folks aren’t the weirdest people here anymore”.

Danny sighs, “yeah, guy’s super weird. I think he tried to exorcise Boxy. It was...really sad. Boxy took pity on him”.

Tucker snorts, “that is pretty sad”.

Danny’s ghost sense goes off just as they start heading to class. Danny sighs dramatically, “so much for first period”, Tucker pats him on the back as well slinks off. Never noticing the ever so slightly wide-eyed priest watching.

Danny gets up with a yawn in the morning, struggling into a sweater and ruffling up his hair before heading down for breakfast.

Danny looks around the table, slightly caught off guard. The priest guy, who Danny has figured out was named Jospeh which honestly was a stereotypical as Hell name, is just sitting at the table; letting Jack and Maddie talk ghost at him with a pleasant smile, though it felt rather fake.

Danny shrugs loosely, and goes to make his cereal, “mornin’”.

Maddie smiles, “morning sweetie. This fine man was curious about the ghosts in town, so Jack decided he could stay for tea”, looking to Jospeh, “you’re named Jospeh you said right?”.

“It is”.

Danny sits down with his bowl, nodding at the guy, “mine’s Danny. And if you wanna talk ghosts then yeah, this is the house to do it in”, Danny decides to fuck with the guy a little, “who knows, maybe my dad’ll pull out the portal photo album”.

Jack grins wide, “yes! We should!”, springing up and rushing off.

Jospeh squints ever so slightly at Danny and turns to face him more, “portal?”.

Danny leans back and puts his hands behind his head nonchalantly, “yup, ghosties come and go through it sometimes. Dad fishes trough it”, deciding to be the mild to colossal idiot that he is, “I've come and gone through it here and there”.

Maddie shakes her head, “I remember that time you stumbled out with a knife in your leg. Didn’t you trip in that time?”.

Danny chuckles, ignoring the priests staring, “yup. Dad left some stuff on the floor and you know how clumsy I am”. Maddie giggles at that before going back to drinking her coffee.

Jospeh stares at him a bit before Jack returns with the aforementioned photo album and Jospeh changes to staring at that.

Danny chuckles and fills up a large thermos with coffee and promptly leaves. Only walking for a ways before slinking into an alley, turning invisible and intangible, then going back to the house.

Danny tilts his head Jospeh seemingly convincing his parents to go out hunting extra long and letting Jospeh help house sit so that he can ‘get a feel for ghosts’. His folks were way too easy to trick sometimes. If Danny’s stuck with this stuck up religious nut then he’s gonna mess around, moving closer to make creepy breathing sounds and blow air at the guy; who shivers from the cold temperature, before looking around for the source. Danny facepalms as Jospeh subtly throws salt out in one direction, clearly thinking there’s a ‘demon’ there. Danny absolutely was going to torment this poor prick. He was creeping all his humans out, would probably grow bold enough to interrupt fights, and he was a pompous twat. The last was honestly reason enough.

Danny comes home that night and as soon as he closes the door, Jospeh is staring at him. Danny waves at him, “sup priest boy”, pointing at the guy, “you know you’re creeping out pretty well the whole town? What’s your issue?”.

“Am I now”.

“Yup”.

Joshep squints but takes a sip of tea, “good. The Fenton parents seem to be the only not under demonic influence in this infested town”, Jospeh slowly walks closer to Danny, “but of course you already know that, don’t you demon”.

Danny makes a show of looking overly offended, “me? Some powerful being from another dimension? Why I never”.

“Hell is hardly another dimension, beast”.

Danny chuckles, “well look at you, able to come up with not one but two insulting names to spit like venom”.

Joseph walks closer and pushes a large silver cross into Danny’s chest, “that’s enough from you. Give it up and release the boy who’s body you’ve stolen and this town. You should have known your time was numbered as soon as you saw me”.

Danny rolls his eyes, utterly unaffected, “of a pompous twat who’s so greatly out of his depth? Hardly”

Joshep pushes the cross in hard and glares, “you're using protections, Foul thing. No matter, there’s seals everywhere, you’re trapped”.

Danny chuckles and makes it sound a bit threatening, “sure, whatever you say buddy”. Pushing past the guy to fetch himself some coffee. Pouring it but giving Joshep dramatic side-eye as the guy starts chanting at him.

“Princeps gloriosissime caelestis militiae, sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio et colluctatione, quae nobis adversus principes et potestates, adversus mundi rectores tenebrarum harum, contra spiritualia nequitiae, in caelestibus“. Danny watching as the guy flips a coin with a cross hollowed out of it and clutches at rosary beads. This guy really was going there wasn’t he? Danny chuckles and smirks, fine, Danny will give this weirdo a damn show.

Joseph continues his chant prayer, “Veni in auxilium hominum, quos Deus creavit inexterminabiles, et ad imaginem similitudinis suae fecit, et a tyrannide diaboli emit pretio magno“.

He holds up and waves around the rosary, making sure the light glints off it. While Danny starts pretending to be in agony but like he’s trying not to show it. As Joshep continues, “Proeliare hodie cum beatorum Angelorum exercitu proelia Domini, sicut pugnasti contra ducem superbiae Luciferum, et angelos eius apostaticos: et non valuerunt, neque locus inventus est eorum amplius in coelo. Sed proiectus est draco ille magnus, serpens antiquus, qui vocatur diabolus et satanas, qui seducit universum orbem; et proiectus est in terram, et angeli eius cum illo missi sunt“.

Danny’s just letting out his fangs and ears at this point, curled up on the ground and pretending to be pissed off at the priest. Who only narrows his eyes with resolute determination, “En antiquus inimicus et homicida vehementer erectus est. Transfiguratus in angelum lucis, cum tota malignorum spirituum caterva late circuit et invadit terram, ut in ea deleat nomen Dei et Christi eius, animasque ad aeternae gloriae coronam destinatas furetur, mactet ac perdat in sempiternum interitum“.

Joshep splashes a container of holy water over Danny, who has to try really hard to not laugh and break character, “Virus nequitiae suae, tamquam flumen immundissimum, draco maleficus transfundit in homines depravatos mente et corruptos corde; spiritum mendacii, impietatis et blasphemiae; halitumque mortiferum luxuriae, vitiorum omnium et iniquitatum“.

Joshep starts aggressively pointing the cross at Danny, “Ecclesiam, Agni immaculati sponsam, faverrimi hostes repleverunt amaritudinibus, inebriarunt absinthio; ad omnia desiderabilia eius impias miserunt manus“.

Danny makes a show off grabbing the guys ankle and letting Joshep shake him off. Danny starts abortedly duplicating, only letting the duplicate start forming or splitting for seconds before snapping them back. Joshep near bellowing now, “Adesto itaque, Dux invictissime, populo Dei contra irrumpentes spirituales nequitias, et fac victoriam“.

Danny once again has to resist laugh as the guy throws salt at him again, “Te custodem et patronum sancta veneratur Ecclesia; te gloriatur defensore adversus terrestrium et infernorum nefarias potestates; tibi tradidit Dominus animas redemptorum in superna felicitate locandas“.

Danny lets a duplicate form halfway but seemingly attempting to snap back ‘into’ Danny. Catching the slight smile on the priests face, “Deprecare Deum pacis, ut conterat satanam sub pedibus nostris, ne ultra valeat captivos tenere homines, et Ecclesiae nocere“.

Danny lets the duplicate fly out of him and slam into the back wall, letting his originally body collapse and pretend to be unconscious. While Joshep stalks after the duplicate, waving the cross and slashing holy water, “Offer nostras preces in conspectu Altissimi, ut cito anticipent nos misericordiae Domini, et apprehendas draconem, serpentem antiquum, qui est diabolus et satanas, ac ligatum mittas in abyssum, ut non seducat amplius gentes“.

Joshep grins wide at the duplicate, pushing the cross into his face, “I cast away any devout dismay, that child in these Christ blessed arms of mine shall never fall at the hands of hellish beasts”.

The duplicate chuckles into the cross, “he’s mine old man”.

Joshep grits his teeth, “you shall evade the one of holy youth, the blessed one of creators uncorrupted, malevolent apparition. Vade retro Satana”.

The duplicate smirks, “ah so foolish, you think you’re some great knowing thing. How much longer till your facade breaks down?”.

“Truth and God shall never waver Beast”.

Original Danny gets up and stretches. Walking over and tapping on Joshep’s shoulder, “if I may turn you away from this rather pathetic display. This child was never one to fall. And I’m only in my own hands”.

The duplicate sits up and pretty well pushes over Joshep. The duplicate roles his eyes, “dude come one. There ain’t no demons here. And do you really think shit like salt and water is going to work on a being bound to eternity?”. The duplicate simply dissipates in the air while Joshep stands up and whirls around to see Danny just standing there and picking at his nails.

Danny pats him on the shoulder, “that was fun, good acting lessons on my part. Anyway, you got that whole need to exorcise out of you system?”.

Joshep sputters, “w-what are you?”.

Danny, deciding to be a dick and really freak this guy out, let’s his transformation ring form around his forehead like a halo for a split second and makes his eyes glow icy blue.

Joshep goes slightly wide-eyed but composes himself quickly. It’s obvious he now thinks Danny’s an angel as he dips his head slightly, “Dânêl. Concede nos famulos tuos, tu pro nobis intercedere dignentur in solio mixtum commiscere divinae miserationis in praesentem necessitatem, quod tu vis quemadmodum nuntiare Mariae in mysterio incarnationis Christi, ut per tua suffragia et patrocinia sentiamus in caelis perpetuae capiamus beneficia eiusdem, et laudem Dei usque in aeternum cantabo in terra viventium“.

Danny holds his hands up and waves the guy off, “you’re freaking my humans out. Stop that. This place is in good hands”, smirking slightly, “as for the shit that just happened. I’m a trickster”.

Danny walks up and pats the guys shoulder with a chuckle, “there are so many things in this world that you’ll never understand. Do not fall to the faults of assuming you know what you do not. Nor that the truths you know are all there is to know. There are no demons here”.

Joshep looks into Danny’s eyes, seeing nothing but fierce protectiveness, twinkling of amusement, and soft kindness. “Then what be they, should you bless me with that knowledge? Could it be that this is why I am here?”.

Danny chuckles and walks to look out the window. Snickering at the seals, “in all the forms of existences there’s bound to be a few you’ve never seen, you could try to achieve it. Become one of the beings of the Infinite Realms. But most of them can never leave or it will be a long time. So I don’t really recommend”, turning to look at Joshep before Danny gestures out the window, “most of them were once living mortals. Some were not. Souls unable to move on granted powering and purpose. Some protect and guide, watching over mortals or time itself. Others try to keep order and punish those who miss-use their power. Others do what you see here in Amity. Scare. Goof around. There are very few who are what you may call evil”.

Joshep walks up next to Danny, and looks out, jerking as all the seals burn away win blue flames. Side-eyeing the chuckling Danny, “you are a well humoured one”.

Danny smirks, “very much so”, nodding his head at the window, “the ones who are dead’s. They all died in brutal fashion. So horrid that existence itself decided they deserved another chance to live free and strong. Make no mistake priest. I protect them as well”. Danny makes his eyes blue and the frost creep across the window to make his point clear.

Joshep nods and dips his head, “but of course. I did not expect my wrongs and I have much to ponder. To none will I bring hassle nor harm”.

Danny chuckles, “good. I will continue keeping an eye on you regardless”.

Joshep blinks but nods with a small smile. And while this was highly enlightening and a blessing, he had zero intentional of imposing on or hanging around an Angel. Angel’s often said ‘be not afraid’ for a reason, they were not truly pleasant creatures and this one had firmly pretended to be a demon and be in agony. So Joshep bows with clasped hands, “blessed you”, before heading out the door.

Danny chuckles, “oh I’m very blessed indeed”.

Este verano en Ascona se ha hablado mucho de Job y Yahvé; el último libro de Jung se llama, en efecto, Respuesta a Job. Como todos los años desde 1932, el profesor Jung ha pasado la segunda quincena de agosto en Ascona, a orillas del Lago Mayor, para asistir a las conferencias organizadas por el círculo Eranos. Algún día tendrá que escribirse la historia de este círculo tan difícil de definir. Fue Rudolf Otto quien le dio nombre: en griego, eranos significa “comida frugal donde cada uno aporta su parte”. Eranos es la creación del entusiasmo, de la voluntad y de la perseverancia de la Sra. Olga Fröbe-Kapteyn, holandesa educada en Inglaterra pero establecida en Ascona desde hace treinta años. Interesada por el simbolismo, apasionada por las investigaciones de jung, la Sra. Olga Fröbe-Kapteyn se ha propuesto invitar todos los años a un cierto número de sabios para discutir un tema común desde la perspectiva de la especialidad de cada uno de ellos. Así, se han tratado temas tan diferentes como El Hombre y la Máscara, la Gran Diosa, la Meditación en Oriente y Occidente, el Tiempo, el Yoga, los Ritos, etc. La intención de Eranos consiste en considerar el simbolismo desde todos los ángulos posibles: psicología, historia de las religiones, teología, matemática e incluso biología. Sin dirigirlo directamente, jung es el spirítus rector de este círculo al que ha comunicado sus primeras investigaciones sobre la alquimia, el proceso de individuación y, recientemente (1951), sus hipótesis concernientes a la sincronicidad. Un editor con coraje y clarividencia, el Dr. Brody, se ha encargado de publicar los textos de estas conferencias. Hoy en día los veinte volúmenes de Eranos-Jahrbücher constituyen con sus ocho mil páginas una de las mejores colecciones científicas referidas al estudio de los simbolismos.

A sus setenta y siete años el profesor jung no ha perdido nada de su extraordinaria vitalidad, de su sorprendente juventud. Ha publicado uno tras otro tres libros nuevos: sobre el simbolismo del Aíon, sobre la sincronicidad y, finalmente, esta Respuesta a Jobque ha provocado ya reacciones sensacionales, sobre todo entre los teólogos.

Siempre había pensado en este libro -me confiesa el profesor jung, una tarde en la terraza de la Casa Eranos-; pero he tardado cuarenta años en escribirlo. Cuando leí por vez primera, aún niño, el Libro de Job, quedé terriblemente conmocionado. Descubrí que Yahvé era injusto, que incluso es un malhechor. Pues se deja persuadir por el diablo. Acepta torturar a Job por la sugestión de Satán. En la omnipotencia de Yahvé, ninguna consideración hacia el sufrimiento humano. Por lo demás, aún subsisten en ciertos escritos judíos rastros de la injusticia de Yahvé: en un texto tardío, Yahvé pide la bendición del gran sacerdote, como si el hombre fuera superior a Él…

Pudiera suceder que todo esto fuera una cuestión de lenguaje. Pudiera ser que lo que usted llama “injusticia” y “crueldad” de Yahvé no fueran más que fórmulas> aproximativas, imperfectas, para expresar la total trascendencia de Dios. Yahvé es “aquel que es”, por tanto está por encima del Bien y del Mal. Es imposible captarlo, comprenderlo, formularlo; por consiguiente, es a la vez “el misericordioso” y “el injusto”. Eso es un modo de decir que ninguna definición puede circunscribir a Dios, ningún atributo lo agota…

Yo hablo como psicólogo -continúa el profesor jung- y, sobre todo, hablo del antropomorfismo de Yahvé ¿y no de su realidad teológica. Como psicólogo compruebo que Yahvé es contradictorio y también creo que se puede interpretar psicológicamente esta contradicción. Para poner a prueba la fidelidad de Job, Yahvé concede a Satán una libertad casi sin límites. Ese hecho no carece de consecuencias para la humanidad: se esperan acontecimientos futuros muy importantes a causa del papel que Yahvé pensó tener que ceder a Satán. Ante la crueldad de Yahvé, Job calla. Ese silencio es la más hermosa y noble respuesta que el hombre haya podido dar a un Dios todopoderoso. El silencio de Job anuncia ya a Cristo. En efecto, Dios se hace hombre, Cristo, para redimir su injusticia con respecto a Job…

El teólogo protestante Hans Schär, al que ya se debe un bello volumen sobre la psicología religiosa de Jung, se pregunta si dentro de cien años Respuesta a Job no será considerado un libro profético. Cuando Jung había publicado sus primeros estudios sobre el inconsciente colectivo y, por consiguiente, se había despegado del freudismo, parece ser que Freud decía de su antiguo colaborador: “Al principio era un gran sabio, ¡pero ahora se ha convertido en profeta!”. ¡En la broma del Maestro algunos ven el mayor de los elogios: en efecto, consideran al profesor Jung como un profeta de los tiempos modernos. Pues si Freud tuvo el gran mérito de descubrir el inconsciente personal, Jung descubrió el inconsciente colectivo y sus estructuras, los arquetipos. Y con ello aportó una luz nueva a la interpretación de los mitos, las visiones y los sueños. Más aún: muy pronto Jung se liberó de los prejuicios cientifistas y positivistas del psicoanálisis freudiano: no redujo la vida espiritual y la cultura a epifenómenos de complejos sexuales de la infancia. Finalmente Jung tiene en cuenta la Historia: mira la psique como naturalista y como historiador; según él, la vida de las profundidades psíquicas es la Historia. Dicen los junguianos que sus descubrimientos cambiarán completamente el universo mental del hombre moderno. Freud no se equivocó: Jung no podía quedarse en ser un simple “sabio”, tenía que ampliar cada vez más el horizonte de sus descubrimientos y trazar un camino para que el hombre moderno saliera de su crisis espiritual. Pues para Jung, como para muchos otros, el mundo moderno está en crisis, y esta crisis está provocada por un conflicto aún no resuelto en las profundidades de la psique.

El gran problema de la psicología -continúa jung-, es la reintegración de los contrarios: eso se encuentra por todas partes y en todos los niveles. Ya en mi libro Psicología y alquimia(1944) tuve ocasión de ocuparme de la integración de Satán. Pues mientras Satán no sea integrado, el mundo no se curará y el hombre no se salvará. Pero Satán representa el Mal y ¿cómo integrar el Mal? Sólo existe una posibilidad: asimilarlo, es decir, elevarlo a la conciencia, hacerlo consciente. Eso es lo que la alquimia llama “conjunción de dos principios”. Porque realmente la alquimia retorna y prolonga el cristianismo. Según los alquimistas, el cristianismo ha salvado al hombre, pero no a la naturaleza. El alquimista sueña con curar el mundo en su totalidad: la piedra filosofal es concebida como el Filíus Macrocosmi que cura el mundo. El fin último de la “obra” alquímica es la apokatastasís, la Salvación cósmica.

Jung ha comprendido muy bien que la alquimia, desde sus orígenes hasta su fin, no fue sólo una pre-química, una “ciencia experimental” embrionaria, sino una técnica espiritual. El objetivo de los alquimistas no era estudiar la Materia, sino liberar al Alma de la materia. Jung llegó a esta conclusión leyendo los textos de los alquimistas clásicos. Se sorprendió ante la semejanza entre los procesos alquímicos por los cuales se pensaba obtener la piedra filosofal y las imágenes en los sueños de algunos de sus pacientes que, sin darse cuenta, estaban trabajando en la integración de su personalidad. En estudios acerca de la alquimia asiática publicados entre 1935 y 1938, mostramos que las operaciones de los alquimistas chinos e indios perseguían igualmente la liberación del alma y la “perfección de la materia”, es decir, la colaboración del hombre en la obra de la naturaleza. Esta convergencia de resultados adquiridos en ámbitos diferentes y por métodos diferentes nos parece una confirmación manifiesta de la hipótesis de jung.

He estudiado alquimia durante quince años, pero no se lo dije nunca a nadie. No quería sugestionar ni a mis pacientes ni a mis colaboradores. Pero después de quince años de investigaciones y de observaciones, las conclusiones se impusieron con una fuerza ineluctable: las operaciones alquímicas eran reales, sólo que esa realidad no era fisica sino psicológica. La alquimia representa la proyección de un drama en términos de laboratorio que es a un tiempo cósmico y espiritual. El opus magnum tenía como finalidad tanto la liberación del alma humana como la curación del Cosmos. Lo que los alquimistas llamaban “materia” era en realidad el “sí mismo”. El “alma del mundo”, anima mundi, identificada por los alquimistas con el spírítus mercurius, estaba aprisionada en la materia. Por eso los alquimistas creían en la verdad de la materia: pues la materia era en efecto su propia vida psíquica. Se trataba de liberar esa materia, de “salvarla”; en una palabra, obtener la piedra filosofal, es decir, el “cuerpo glorioso”, el corpus glorificationis. Pero ese trabajo es dificil y está sembrado de obstáculos: la “obra” alquímica es peligrosa. Ya en el inicio se encuentra al “Dragón”, el espíritu ctónico, el “Diablo”, o como lo llaman los alquimistas, el “Negro”, la nigredo. Y ese encuentro produce sufrirmiento. La “materia” sufre hasta la desaparición de la “negrura”; en términos psicológicos el alma se encuentra en las ansias de la melancolía luchando con la “Sombra”. El misterio de la conjunción, misterio central de la alquimia, persigue justamente la síntesis de los opuestos, la asimilación del “Negro”, la integración del Diablo. Para el cristiano “despierto” eso constituye un acontecimiento psíquico muy grave, pues es la confrontación con su “Sombra”: ésta representa la “negrura” (nigredo), lo que permanece separado, es decir, lo que jamás podrá ser totalmente integrado en la persona humana. Al interpretar la confrontación del cristiano con su “Sombra” en términos psicológicos, se descubre el miedo secreto de que el Diablo sea más fuerte, de que Cristo no haya logrado vencerle completamente. De otro modo, ¿por qué se ha creído, y se continúa creyendo, en el Anticristo? ¿Por qué se ha esperado, y se espera aún, la llegada del Anticristo? Pues sólo después del reino del Anticristo y después de la segunda venida de Cristo, el Mal será vencido definitivamente en el mundo y en el alma humana. Todos estos símbolos y creencias son solidarias en el plano psicológico: siempre hay que luchar contra el Mal, con Satán, y vencerle, esto es, asimilarlo, integrarlo en la conciencia. En el lenguaje alquímico la materia sufre hasta la desaparición de la nigredo, cuando la “aurora” es anunciada por la cauda pavonis y aparece un día nuevo, la leukosis, albedo. Pero en ese estado de “blancura” no se vive en el sentido propio del término. De algún modo, es una especie de estado ideal, abstracto; para vivificarle se necesita “sangre” y hay que obtener lo que los textos alquímicos llaman la rubedo, lo rojo de la Vida. Sólo la experiencia total del ser puede transformar ese estado “ideal” de la albedo en una existencia humana integral. Sólo la sangre puede reanimar una consciencia gloriosa en la que se ha disuelto el último rastro de la “negrura” en la que el Diablo ya no tiene una existencia autónoma sino que se incorpora a la unidad profunda de la psique. Entonces la “obra”, el opus magnum de los alquimistas, ha sido realizada: el alma humana está perfectamente integrada…

No voy a analizar aquí esta grandiosa reconstrucción de la alquimia emprendida por Jung. Baste con recordar que la integración del “Mal” constituye para él el gran problema de la consciencia moderna. Algunos le han reprochado su esfuerzo orientado a la Unidad Total, a costa de sacrificar las polaridades, la abolición de contradicciones, la integración de Satán. Pero jung no pretende hacer ni teología ni filosofía de la religión.

Yo soy un psicólogo. No me ocupo de lo que trasciende el contenido psicológico de la experiencia humana. Ni siquiera me planteo el problema de saber si es posible semejante trascendencia, pues en todos los casos lo transpsicológico ya no es asunto del psicólogo. Ahora bien, en el plano psicológico, me enfrento con experiencias religiosas que poseen una estructura y un simbolismo susceptibles de ser interpretados. Yo considero que la experiencia religiosa es real, es verdadera. Compruebo que semejantes experiencias pueden “salvar” el alma, pueden acelerar su integración e instaurar el equilibrio espiritual. Como psicólogo compruebo que el estado de gracia existe: es la perfecta serenidad del alma, el equilibrio creador, fuente de energía espiritual. Sin dejar de hablar como psicólogo, corroboro que la presencia de Dios se manifiesta en la estructura profunda de la psique como una coincidentia oppositorum. Y toda la historia de las religiones, todas las teologías están ahí para confirmar que la coincídentia opposítonim es una de las fórmulas más utilizadas y más arcaicas para expresar la realidad de Dios. Como decía Rudolf Otto, la experiencia religiosa es numinosa, y yo como psicólogo distingo esa experiencia de las otras por el hecho de que trasciende las categorías ordinarias de tiempo, espacio y causalidad. Últimamente he estudiado mucho la sincronicidad (brevemente expresado: la “ruptura del tiempo”) y he comprobado que está muy cerca de la experiencia numinosa: espacio, tiempo y causalidad están abolidos. No pretendo establecer ningún juicio de valor acerca de la experiencia religiosa. Compruebo que el conflicto interior es siempre fuente de crisis psicológicas profundas y peligrosas; tan peligrosas que pueden destruir la integridad humana. Psicológicamente, ese conflicto interior se manifiesta por medio de las mismas imágenes y por el mismo simbolismo atestiguados en todas las religiones del mundo y utilizados también por los alquimistas. De ese modo he llegado a ocuparme de la religión, de Yahvé, Satanás, Cristo, la Virgen. Comprendo muy bien que un creyente vea en esas imágenes algo diferente de lo que yo, como psicólogo, tengo el derecho de ver. La fe del creyente es una gran fuerza espiritual y es la garantía de su integridad psíquica. Pero yo soy médico: me ocupo de la curación de mis semejantes. Por desgracia, la fe y sólo ella ya no tiene el poder de curar a ciertos seres. El mundo moderno está desacralizado; por eso está en crisis. El hombre tiene que volver a descubrir una fuente más profunda de su propia vida espiritual. Pero para ello tiene la obligación de luchar contra el Mal, de enfrentarse con su “Sombra”, de integrar al “Diablo”. No hay otra salida. Por eso Yahvé, Job, Satanás, representan psicológicamente situaciones ejemplares: son como los paradigmas del eterno drama humano…

En toda su obra, que es inmensa, Jung parece obsesionado con la reintegración de los opuestos. A su modo de ver, el hombre no puede alcanzar la unidad más que en la medida en que logra superar los conflictos que lo desgarran interiormente. La reintegración de los contrarios, la coincidencia opposítorum, es la piedra angular del sistema de Jung. Por eso mismo está interesado en las doctrinas y técnicas orientales. El taoísmo y el yoga le han revelado los medios utilizados por el asiático para transcender las múltiples polaridades y alcanzar la unidad espiritual. Pero este esfuerzo orientado a la unidad por la integración de los opuestos se encuentra también en Hegel aunque sea en un plano bien distinto. Uno se podría preguntar si no se debería llevar aún más lejos la comparación entre Hegel y Jung. Hegel descubre la Historia y su gran esfuerzo tiene como fin la reconciliación del hombre con su propio destino histórico. Jung descubre el inconsciente colectivo, es decir, todo lo que precede a la historia personal del ser humano, y se dedica a descifrar las estructuras y la “dialéctica” con intención de facilitar la reconciliación del hombre con la parte inconsciente de su vida psíquica y conducirle a la reintegración de su personalidad. A diferencia de Freud, Jung tiene en cuenta la Historia: los arquetipos, estructuras del inconsciente colectivo, están cargados de “historia”. Ya no se trata, como en Freud, de una espontaneidad “natural” del inconsciente de cada individuo, sino de una inmensa cantera de “recuerdos históricos”: la memoria colectiva donde en su esencia sobrevive la Historia de toda la humanidad. Jung cree que el hombre debería aprovechar más esa cantera: su método analítico está dirigido justamente a elaborar los medios para utilizarla.

El inconsciente colectivo es más peligroso que la dinamita, pero existen medios para manejarlo sin demasiados riesgos. Cuando se desencadena una crisis psíquica, se está mejor situado que cualquier otro para resolverla. Se tienen sueños y “sueños de vigilia”: hay que esforzarse por observarlos. Se podría decir que cada sueño lleva a su manera un mensaje: no sólo te dice que algo no funciona en tu ser profundo, sino que además te proporciona también la solución para salir de la crisis. Pues el inconsciente colectivo, que te envía estos sueños, posee ya la solución. En efecto, nada se ha perdido de toda la experiencia inmemorial de la humanidad. Todas las situaciones imaginables y todas las soluciones posibles parecen estar previstas por el inconsciente colectivo. No tienes más que observar con sumo cuidado el “mensaje” transmitido por el inconsciente y “descifrarlo”. El análisis ayuda a leer correctamente esos mensajes…

Jung concede una importancia capital a la interpretación de los sueños, esa mitología camuflada en el hombre moderno. No deja de ser interesante recordar que el surrealismo, que representa el esfuerzo más sistemático de renovación de la experiencia poética contemporánea, había aceptado la realidad onírica. 0 mejor aún: el surrealismo ha perseguido, entre otras cosas, la integración del estado de sueño para conseguir la “situación total”, más allá de la dualidad consciencia-inconsciencia. Por mucho que los freudianos le hayan acusado de ser más “teórico” que práctico, Jung no ha querido abandonar la perspectiva del psicólogo para proponernos una filosofía basada en la dialéctica de la coincidencia oppositorum. Pero es permisible esperar que sus discípulos retomen y prolonguen un día sus esfuerzos por precisar las relaciones entre la experiencia consciente del individuo y la “Historia” conservada en el inconsciente colectivo. Los sueños representan para jung un lenguaje coherente y, tanto más rico aún por cuanto está libre de las leyes del tiempo y de la causalidad. Fue a consecuencia de sus sueños, que vanamente había tratado de interpretar en términos del psicoanálisis freudiano, cuando Jung llegó a suponer la existencia del inconsciente colectivo. Eso tuvo lugar en 1909. Dos años más tarde, Jung empezaba a darse cuenta de la importancia de su descubrimiento. Finalmente, en 1914, siempre a consecuencia de una serie de sueños y de “sueños de vigilia”, comprende que las manifestaciones del inconsciente colectivo son en parte independientes de las leyes del tiempo y de la causalidad. Como el profesor Jung ha tenido a bien autorizarnos a hablar de esos sueños y de esos “sueños de vigilia”, que han desempeñado un papel capital en su carrera científica, ofrezco seguidamente un resumen:

En octubre de 1913, encontrándose en el tren que le llevaba de Zurich a Schaffhausen, le sucedió este extraño hecho: una vez en el túnel, pierde la conciencia de tiempo y de lugar, y despierta al cabo de una hora oyendo anunciar al conductor la llegada a Schaffhausen. Durante todo ese tiempo fue víctima de una alucinación, de un “sueño de vigilia”: veía el mapa de Europa y veía cómo el mar la iba cubriendo país por país empezando por Francia y Alemania. Poco tiempo después, todo el continente se encontraba bajo el agua, a excepción de Suiza, que era como una montaña muy alta que las olas no podían sumergir. Jung se veía sentado sobre la montaña. Y, al mirar mejor alrededor de él, se dio cuenta de que el mar era sangre: comenzó a distinguir sobre las olas los cadáveres, los tejados de las casas, vigas medio quemadas…

Tres meses más tarde, en diciembre de 1913, se repite el mismo “sueño de vigilia” a la entrada del mismo túnel. (“Era como una inmersión en el inconsciente colectivo”, comprendería más tarde.) El joven psiquiatra se preocupa. Se pregunta si no estará “haciendo una esquizofrenia” (según el lenguaje de la época). Finalmente, algunos meses más tarde, sueña lo siguiente: se encuentra con un amigo durante el verano en los mares del sur, cerca de Sumatra. Por los periódicos se enteran de que Europa ha sido invadida por una ola de frío terrible como jamás antes se había conocido. Jung decide partir a Batavia y embarcarse para regresar a Europa. Su amigo le dice que viajará en un velero de Sumatra hasta Hadramaout y que luego continuará su camino por Arabia y Turquía. Jung llega a Suiza. Sólo ve nieve. Una viña inmensa se eleva en algún lugar con muchos racimos. Se acerca y se pone a coger racimos distribuyéndolos entre desconocidos que le rodean pero que no puede ver…

A su tercera repetición, el sueño llegó a inquietarme en el más alto grado. Justamente preparaba una comunicación sobre la esquizofrenia para el congreso de Aberdeen y me decía: ” ¡Hablaré de mí mismo! Probablemente me volveré loco después de la lectura de la comunicación… “. El congreso tenía lugar en julio de 1914: exactamente en el período en que en mis tres sueños me veía en los mares del sur. El 31 de julio, inmediatamente después de mi conferencia, me enteré por los diarios de que la guerra acababa de estallar. ¡Por fin comprendía! Y cuando al día siguiente el barco me dejó en Holanda, no había nadie más feliz que yo. Ahora estoy seguro de que no me amenazaba ninguna esquizofrenia. Había comprendido que mis sueños y visiones procedían del subsuelo del inconsciente colectivo. Sólo tenía que trabajar para profundizar y dar validez a este descubrimiento. Y es a lo que me dedico desde hace casi cuarenta años…

Poco tiempo después Jung tuvo la alegría de recibir una segunda confirmación a su sueño. Los diarios no tardaron en hablar de las aventuras del capitán de barco alemán Von Mücke, que en un velero había recorrido los mares del sur desde Sumatra hasta Hadramaout y después se había refugiado en Arabia para alcanzar desde allí Turquía…

Elia Barceló, Premio Nacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil 2020

El jurado del Premio Nacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil correspondiente al año 2020 ha galardonado a Elia Barceló por su obra El efecto Frankenstein “por su prosa fluida y madura, su trama perfectamente encajada hasta el final, y unos personajes que evolucionan a lo largo de la historia y están dotados de una profundidad que los hace creíbles”. A su vez, ha destacado que “la obra cuenta con un importante trabajo de documentación histórica que muestra la evolución del rol de la mujer desde hace 200 años”.

Dirigida fundamentalmente al lector juvenil, El efecto Frankenstein (Premio Edebé 2019) supone una aportación importante al fomento de la lectura en unas edades clave para la formación de futuros lectores. Es un homenaje a Frankenstein y una lección de historia. Una novela que reflexiona sobre la igualdad entre sexos y clases. Como si se tratara de Alicia cayendo por la madriguera, Nora viaja a finales del siglo XVIII. Allí tendrá que disfrazarse de hombre y también de señorita; y adaptarse a las vestimentas y costumbres de la época para ayudar a su amigo Max a solucionar el problema con la criatura que su irresponsable amigo Víctor ha creado y abandonado en su laboratorio.

Elia Barceló estudió filología anglogermánica y filología hispánica en las universidades de Valencia y Alicante, para después doctorarse en Literatura Hispánica en la Universidad de Innsbruck (Austria), país donde es profesora de literatura hispánica, estilística y literatura creativa.

Es una de las escritoras de ciencia ficción más destacadas de la literatura en español, y en su amplia obra también ha cultivado la narrativa juvenil, de terror, el thriller o la novela histórica. Ha publicado más de una veintena de obras, entre novelas, ensayos y relatos, entre las que cabe destacar: Consecuencias naturales (1994), El vuelo del Hipogrifo (2002), El secreto del orfebre (2003), Las largas sombras (2009), Hijos de Atlantis (2013), La maga y otros cuentos crueles (2015), El color del silencio (2017) y El eco de la piel (2019).

Entre otros reconocimientos, ha recibido el Premio Ignotus de relato fantástico de la Asociación Española de Fantasía y Ciencia Ficción en 1991 por La estrella, el Premio Internacional de novela corta de ciencia ficción de la Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya (1994) por su obra El mundo de Yarek, el Premio Celsius 2014 con Anima Mundi o el Premio Edebé de literatura juvenil 1998, 2007 y 2018 por El caso del artista cruel, Cordeluna y El efecto Frankenstein, respectivamente. Sus libros han sido traducidos a más de dieciocho lenguas, entre otras, el alemán, el francés, el italiano o el holandés.

El Premio Nacional de LIJ lo concede el Ministerio de Cultura y Deporte para distinguir una obra de autor español, escrita en cualquiera de las lenguas oficiales del Estado y editada en España durante el pasado año 2019. La dotación económica del premio es de 20.000 euros. El Hatillo, 29 de enero del 2020.

Buenos días, este resumen de noticias llega a ustedes gracias a @NotiHatillo /La Ceiba de Ramón Muchacho /Alcaldía de El Hatillo.

Titulares

Hoy miércoles el alcalde @eliasayegh estará presidiendo el acto de nombramiento del nuevo director de la Policía Municipal de #ElHatillo. El cargo será asumido por el Comisario General Sergio Olivo Gonzales. El acto se realizará hoy a las 10:30 am en la Plaza Bolívar de #ElHatillo.

Este jueves 30 se estará realizando en la Plaza Bolívar una jornada de Asesoría Legal del Concejo de Derechos del Niño, Niña y Adolescentes, en el mismo se estará realizando la difusión de la ordenanza del Gobierno Infantil /Juvenil del Hatillo.

Cuadrillas de la Alcaldía continúan sus labores dentro del plan #CuidemosElHatillo en el cual realizaron labores de mantenimiento vial, bacheo y restitución de carpetas asfálticas en la Urbanización Los Pomelos. Dichas labores estuvieron supervisadas por el alcalde @eliasayegh y la misma tiene como objeto mejorar la seguridad de los conductores de esa popular urbanización. El alcalde Sayegh acotó que ya van más de 16.500 huecos viales que han sido reparados durante su gestión.

Este jueves en los Naranjos se estará realizando un operativo de @PlumroseVzla en lo que es conocido como un Food Truck, dicho operativo estará en la Av. Sur 2 de Los Naranjos de 12:00 m a 6:00 pm para beneficiar a los vecinos con la oferta de los productos Plumrose. De igual manera el día Viernes se realizará el mercado solidario de la empresa @PlumroseVzla en la Urbanización El Cigarral donde también los asistentes podrán adquirir productos de esa reconocida marca.

La Patilla: Guaidó viajará a Miami para continuar con su gira por la libertad de Venezuela.

Diputado Brito anunció creación de una comisión para investigar al presidente (E) Guaidó. La comisión estaría integrada por Ángel Medina y Enrique Márquez, pese a que ellos afirmaron que no participarán en la comisión.
