Invaluable Asset

AN: this could be a series, but for now I'm going to write it to be a stand alone. Please let me know if you want to see more! This takes. place in season one, sometime after episode 16. Ressler might be a little OOC.

"You're trying to tell me you don't know a single person good enough to steal these cars?"

Reddington sighed deeply, "Of course I do. But they lack a certain talent for subtlety that's necessary for this task. I'm not some type of magician, I can't just pull criminals out of my hat for you."

Cooper turned sharply. "And how exactly do you expect us to find an actor turned car thief willing to go undercover for us?"

"I can't possibly imagine how that's my problem. Either you figure it out or Amíl will be gone in less than a week. And once he's gone, you'll never so much as hear of him again." He placed his hat back on his head and turned to leave, strolling to the elevator with the same easy confidence he always seemed to have.

"For now, I have other matters to attend to."

The elevator closed just as Red finished speaking.

"Well?" Cooper asked Liz, "How do you suggest we go about this?"

Surprisingly, however, it was Ressler that answered.

"I think I know someone."

You were just pulling the muffins out of the oven when the doorbell rang.

"One second!" You called, hoping they could hear you as you pulled out the second tray and placed it onto the waiting trivet. You removed your oven mitts and set them on the counter between the two trays, then made your way to the front door. Your eyes lit up as you spotted Donnie through the tall windows. Taking two long strides to reach the door, you flung it open, a wide grin dancing on your lips.

"Donnie! Hi, I feel like I haven't seen you in forever!"

It took everything in you not to pull him in for a hug, but you knew he didn't like spontaneous physical contact, so you abstained. Donnie coughed and shifted uncomfortably and you finally registered the two others standing next to him.

The brunette had an apologetic smile on her face, but the older man looked more amused than anything.

You scanned them briefly. Deciding they looked harmless enough, you stepped back to let them in. Besides, you trusted Donnie not to bring anyone dangerous to your door.

"Nice suit. It looks good on you. Come on in, we can talk while I make the drizzle for these muffins. I hope y'all like lemon,"

You turned and led them through the house and into the kitchen, humming at the thanks you received for the compliment. You also fought off a smile when you heard him mutter something about 'good taste' to the woman.

"So," you said, carefully adding powdered sugar to the bit of lemon juice you had left, "I'm assuming this visit is for business rather than pleasure?"

"Unfortunately. I have a favor to ask of you."

"Alright," you replied. Deciding the drizzle was at the consistency you wanted, you began to spoon it over the muffins. "I can tell this is serious, and the kitchen counter is no place to discuss serious business. Donnie, could you grab plates for everyone? We'll talk about this further in the living room. Please try to keep crumbs on your plates, I cleaned the couches yesterday."

You stared incredulously at your friend and his two companions, whose names you'd learned were Liz and David, though you suspected the man was lying.

"I'm sorry, let me get this straight. You spent three years trying to get me to stop stealing cars and remove myself from this life of crime, you helped me move to get away from that life and be closer to you, and now you're telling me you want me to go steal cars in your name?"

David smiled and leaned back in his chair, "Yes."

"No." Donnie glared so hard you thought he might punch David in the face before returning his gaze to you. "Of course I don't want you to go back to stealing cars. But we need someone to go undercover for us, and unfortunately I seem to know the only car thief good enough at acting to help."

"Ex car thief, Donnie. I don't do that shit anymore."

You sighed and buried your face in your hands, dragging them down until your eyes were uncovered. "But you're my friend, and I help my friends. What do you need me to do?"

David sat back up and turned to the woman, who hadn't so much as touched her muffin.

"You really ought to try the muffins. They're incredible. As for what you need to do, we'll need you to get the attention of a certain criminal, so you're going to need you to break into his car. Don't take it though, it needs to look like you did it just to prove you could. Once you've done that, you'll have to convince him to let you join his operation instead of murdering you. Can you do that?"

You weighed your options silently. On one hand, what they were asking of you was incredibly dangerous, and even though you knew it was necessary, the idea of purposely being caught set every part of you on edge.

On the other hand though, Donnie would never ask you to do something like this unless he was truly desperate, and you trusted him not to let you get hurt. Still, he couldn't prevent every danger and doing this would be taking a huge risk.

"Which criminal?"

Liz finally added her two cents into the mix.

"I'm terribly sorry, but that's classified. Unless we have positive confirmation you'll be helping us, he'll have to remain unnamed."

A sharp, angry smile made its way onto your face.

"I'm sorry, you're not just asking me to put my life on the line, you're also asking me to risk everything I've worked so hard to build. Even if I do this, and by some miracle this man doesn't murder me, soon everyone will know who I am and what I did, and if my old employers get a hold of that information, I will be hunted, tortured, and killed. So you can either tell me who's car I'll be stealing and take the risk that I might say no, or you can get the hell out of my house right now and know for certain that you squandered your best chance of catching this man. Do I make myself clear?"

Liz opened her mouth to respond, but David cut her off before she could say anything else.

"Vicente Amíl."

"Jesus fucking Christ," you muttered.

"I'll do it. But just so we're clear, you owe me. Big time."

You locked eyes with Donnie, who sagged with visible relief.

"Thank you, (Y/n). You have no idea what this means to me."

You shook your head, standing. "I'm the stupidest person in the entire world. I can't believe I'm doing this for you. Also," you added, turning back to Liz, "It's incredibly rude not to eat food someone serves you in their home. If you didn't like lemons, you should've said so before I served you."

You turned your attention back to the boys. "You, on the other hand, should take a few muffins to go. Thank you for being so polite. You're welcome back anytime. Donnie, always good to see you, even if you are requesting impossible things from me. Please see Liz out."

Donald raised an eyebrow at that. "Just Liz?"

You glanced back at him and smiled. "And yourself, please. Do come back later though, I'm dying to catch up. David and I are going to get him his muffins."

Though polite, your tone left no room for argument and you could faintly hear Donnie and Liz arguing as they walked to the door. Once the door finally closed, you turned your attention back to the man in the center of your house.

"Wonderful. Now that they're gone, may I have your real name please? I do tire of calling you by your alias."

You watched as he chuckled and rose from his chair, strolling towards the hall leading back to the kitchen. "Raymond Reddington, at your service. It's a pleasure to meet someone so very talented."

"Please," you replied smoothly, "The pleasure is all mine. I meant what I said, by the way. Feel free to drop by whenever. I'm usually off Friday through Sunday and there's a good chance I'll be baking something else. Helps relax me, and my coworkers enjoy whatever I make as well."

He smiled as you handed him a Tupperware container with four muffins safely nestled inside. Placing his hat back upon his head, he made his way to the door, and you took notice of the glint in his eye right before he left.

"I'm sure I'll be seeing you quite soon, (Y/n)."

You leaned against the wall and watched him saunter to the car waiting for him. A different car than Donnie and Liz took, by the looks of it. The corners of your lips twitched up as you watched him go.

"Raymond Reddington, huh? What an interesting man."

To clarify: This is not a case of both universes existing simultaneously. This is an inexplicably-dropped-into-an-entirely-different-universe crossover.

This is not necessarily about which is your favorite character out of these (although it could be. Who am I to tell you what to do here). This is about what would be the most chaotic, the most cursed, the most barely-justifiable plot-wise. The worst, if you will.

And, since there are far more than ten characters I can imagine dumping into the world of Batman and the Justice League with no valid reasoning, there will be more.

OKAY so the premise is great imo. Elizabeth “Liz” Keen’s life is basically perfect. She’s married to a handsome, adoring, successful teacher. They’re very near to finishing the process of adopting their first child. Best of all, Liz is beginning her career as an FBI profiler. Today’s her first day on the job and, other than being a little late rolling out of bed, it’s going to be great!

Except for one teeny, tiny snag. An hour or so before she’s due in the office, Raymond “Red” Reddington, #1 on the FBI’s Most Wanted list, turns himself in. He offers himself up as the FBI’s informant, specifically feeding them info on what he refers to as the blacklist: a list of criminals so heinous, secretive, and downright dangerous that the FBI doesn’t even know they exist, let alone how to catch them. Red will serve up his fellow fugitives on a silver platter. The catch?

He'll only work with Liz.

So the FBI is like, “Why the fuck is the ‘concierge of crime’ interested in a newbie profiler who hasn’t even made it into work yet?” and Liz is also like, “Wtf, I don’t know him, why would Reddington be interested in me?” It’s the mystery at the heart of the whole show, interspersed among the stand-alone episodes where they go after blacklisters: who is Liz to Red? Because he is very protective of her. Accommodating. Downright adoring—or perhaps obsessive. But really, Spader is fantastic in the role and keeps things on the side of charmingly sweet (in a ‘I’ll kill huge swaths of people for you :)’ kinda way) as opposed to creepy, which I really like. Honestly, a good 75% of the show's appeal for me is in Red's characterization and Spader's performance.

The point though is that everyone wants to know why such a powerful, immoral man would go out of his way to not just work with Liz, but bend/break every rule he’s ever made—tear apart years of self-serving contingency plans—just to keep her safe. I mean, the whole thing starts with Red turning himself in, risking disappearing into some dark FBI hole, just for the chance to see her.

So is he in love with her? (Lizzington is a popular ship, despite—or perhaps in part because of—the May/December dynamic and frankly the show does a lot to feed that possibility. It's never going to be canon, but fans aren't just pulling this ship out of thin air either. Trust me. I went in expecting it to just be fans being fans and... it's not. It's really not.) Is he her father? (And now we see why lizzington is controversial lol.) Is he manipulating Liz? Are the two of them in on something together? Theories abound, with each season providing new clues and revelations, nine seasons so far in total… so you can see where I’m going with this. Frankly, it doesn’t add up. I knew as soon as I understood the premise and caught wind of the show’s length that there would be no satisfying resolution. You don’t pose a singular question like that and dole out supposed answers each season without eventually retconning the hell out of previous episodes, or dropping previously important reveals, or just plain making stuff up for the sake of drama rather than logic. It’s inevitable in a form with so many fingers in the writing pie and, having been spoiled for the later seasons, I know that this isn’t magically fixed along the way.

So that’s a definite flaw in the show, though one I fully expected and thus am pretty indifferent to. The far bigger issue I have is that, as said in my tag rant, poor Liz is barely allowed to be a character anymore. She’s treated as a plot device, with her emotions serving whatever the current conflict is, rather than occurring as a result of her experiences. As you can imagine, Liz has some complicated feelings about Red, but they’re far from logical or consistent. I’m not joking when I say that she’ll despise him at the start of one episode, be hugging him by the end, and then be back to wanting him cut from her life at the start of the next episode with no explanation as to why this change occurred. Much like RWBY, the viewer is forced to decide for themselves why Liz is constantly on an emotional roller coaster that defies gravity and though yes, there are PLENTY of potential explanations in the show—I think this woman has been through enough to have earned a blanket ‘You think she’s emotionally stable??’ justification—but from a writing perspective it’s less than satisfying to continually do the writer’s work for them. In some episodes things won't stay consistent between scenes and I want to kick down the responsible party's door to ask what the actual hell they were thinking.

It's the kind of show with a few key, GLARING problems and if you’re hoping for something tightly written that will neatly wrap up all your questions and presumed inconsistencies with a pretty bow… keep waiting. But I’m used to shows like that—it happens with most long-form action stories, frankly, especially if they’ve got a core mystery like Blacklist—so I’ve learned to prioritize other aspects. Like the cast of characters? Top notch. Liz and Red’s dynamic is obviously the heart of the show and as much as I prefer them getting along, Liz’s cyclical anger is compelling too, in large part because Red remains completely devoted to her, no matter what she throws at him or how badly she treats him. Not to overshare on main, but I cannot possibly emphasize enough what a sucker I am for a sophisticated bad guy who would burn the world for his loved one even when she hates him. Actually, especially when she hates him because oh no, no one can hate him more than he already hates himself.

We’ve got Dembe, Red’s right-hand man and all around badass with a marshmallow center. Ressler who I’m usually pretty meh about because he’s the boring by-the-book cop, but every once in a while he pulls some chaotic move out of left field that makes me cheer. Samar who is even more of a badass than Dembe and that’s REALLY saying something. Aram, easily one of my favorite quirky tech characters of all time: literal ball of sunshine who will nevertheless cut you if you threaten his found family. Their boss, Cooper, who seems like a hardass but ultimately treats his team like his kids (letting them get away with shit included). Tom, Liz’s husband, who is… complicated. Mr. Kaplan who you just need to watch to fully appreciate. The cast is A+

Which means I’m watching the stupidest plot-line man ever devised, or a character suddenly did a 180 with no explanation, and yeah that makes the meta-writing part of my brain seethe and bite her imaginary pillow to muffle screams of rage… but then the characters have A Moment™, or there’s an actually well done twist, or we get an action sequence that yeah, is pretty silly when all is said and done, but it’s fun and I remember why I want to watch this show through to the end. Not because I think the big mystery will have a satisfying conclusion and not even because I like a lot of the major plot-lines coming up (I don’t) but because I still like the characters and so long as they’re interacting together in interesting ways, I’ll keep tuning in.

Particularly when it comes to Liz and Red. For however badly their relationship is written at times, the underlying dynamic itself remains stellar: successful FBI agent vs. renowned criminal. Poetic charmer vs. down-to-earth realist. Answers vs. questions. Is she making him better? Is he making her worse? What are they to each other and, even if the show did define that clearly on some level, can it really be answered so easily? I don’t think so. The fact that some days my brain goes, “God they have such a good father-daughter-esque relationship” and other days it’s going, “I ship it 👀” and other days it’s just, “You two need to stay FAR AWAY from each other. I mean, I’m digging the dysfunction, but if you were real people holy shit” just speaks to the complexity here. As frustrating as it can be, the messiness is kinda fun too? They’re compelling and they make my brain go brrrr with possibilities and sometimes that’s all you need in a show!

At least for the first three seasons. Lets see how I feel after 3 times that lol

Thoughts on 10.21 and 10.22, no spoilers.

So I'm going to make comments as I go during some of the commercials, but I'm not going to post them until afterwards, so this is as much a live reaction as a review. Each paragraph is recorded at a different commercial.

The first half hour we've seen before. It's fun, but very familiar. It feels like a bit of a waste in the final episode. The only benefit is learning how the task force is conflicted about things. We only got a tiny glimpse of Reddington's heart, which I've come to realize is what I truly love about the show and what I truly want from it.

I am disappointed in Dembe. I always had a particular idea of why Dembe joined the fbi, and that was to change tactics in his quest to save Reddington's soul. And in season 8 he heard Reddington tell Cooper how much this task force had changed him. Then Elizabeth died. I always felt that Denbe joined the task force to try and connect Red to the force that was the most positive on him.

Weecha continues to be a nothing burger. I get nothing from her about how she and Red connect romantically. There's just nothing there.

At the end of the first hour I actually said out loud "oh, don't you dare." In everything that I imagined about this finale that possibility is not one that crossed my mind. Just, no.

Almost halfway through the second episode. So I was right, high action, intense episode with a twist I didn't see coming, as we often see in the season finale. And it's a very solid episode for the task force. We're getting a lot of character from them. And Herbie, good for you. That was the right call. Love that dude.

But what I'm missing is Red's heart. The core of the show, and I want something new from him. I want to see his heart laid bare. His actions do speak to his heart when it comes to Dembe, but there needs to be more.

Oh boy. I guess that's it. The closest we're ever going to get to confirmation of Redarina. Not at all what I wanted. Up until I knew it was Redarina I really thought Red's identity didn't matter, but the transgender situation in the world right now really needs this.

And I'm genuinely worried now. There is less than half an hour left.

Last commercial, less than 10 minutes left. I'm very scared. This has been undeniably beautiful for the last 15 minutes. Please, please, give me one of the things that I want.

Very proud of that final monologue, that was fantastic.

The final scene; No. That. Was. Stupid. Beautifully done, but I hate it. I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Hetalia headcanon

So, another one with Roderich as a well villain, but not really, not exactly. Let's mix the Blacklist with our beloved personifications. And use my second favourite pairing, Austria and Germany.

Imagine Rod as Reddington. No one really knows who he is exactly. A spy? A traitor? Mastermind criminal? He knows everyone and knows everything about everyone. Information and networking are the keys to his success. He loves art and music and is very eccentric. He buys weird stuff and enjoys the finest food and wines.

Now imagine this young FBI German-American agent, -Ludwig Beilschmidt who spent his entire career chasing Roderich (just like Donald Ressler) and suddenly he is a part of a special task force that relies solely on a blacklist of criminals provided by Rod. Not only this, but Roderich also saved Ludwig's life. Ah, the possibilities of a slow-building romance between those two with a good amount of drama and angst

Oh, and Hungary, as Denbe, she would rock.

How does this end? No idea, maybe like in TV series, spoilers, which means dead Rod and no happy ending. Or maybe, just maybe, they get together and disappear.

I wish there was meta about Red growing up during the cold war and how growing up Red didn’t have the vocabulary to address who he was.

(As I understand it, Red prefers to answer to he/him but also the show doesn't clarify this.)

I can only imagine it hadn’t helped the way he grew up it made it almost impossible to figure himself out.

Dom scripted Red’s life from the moment he could walk. He was the “son he always wanted”. And yet when he did become the son, Dom was furious with Red.

And at every opportunity mentioned how Red killed Katarina, and loved Katarina. Even on his deathbed.

But Red loved Dom despite everything he put Red through.

It’s no wonder Red is so deeply reluctant to tell Liz even if it would help everything, like for example when Tatiana claimed she was Katarina, Liz’s mother. Starting a rift and Liz (again) going against Red but in such a way that it cost Red his father and Anne.

I don’t know if Red was even conscious of how terrified he was that one of the reasons he hasn’t told Liz was because he was afraid Liz would reject him the way Dom did constantly.

This fear is at cross purposes with Liz’s need to find out who Red is to her.

Liz was adopted, and despite all of Red’s intentions she did remember being abandoned. Sam was her dad despite his flaws and she accepted them and loved him and since Sam died Liz’s desire to know more of her past, who Red is to her grew.

The moments when Liz was at peace and happily working with Red was when she thought she knew who Red was: her bio dad, or when she thought Red was Ilya (Red’s childhood friend who once posed as Reddington).

The worst moments of their relationships is when Liz didn’t know who Red was, or when fake!Katarina entered the picture.

It would have been far easier maybe if Red accepted the title and role of “father”. But being a father is a loaded one for Red, due to so many things starting with Dom and ending with Red’s guilt over Original Reddington’s death and the role Red played in that.

To Red Liz’s fathers were: Original Reddington, Constantin Rostova, and Sam. He isn’t part of the list.

The only real thing Katarina ever had in a life full of life was Masha and being Masha’s mother.

And I think that might be a key to Red’s block because Red didn’t want to be called Liz’s dad.

Red wants Liz to call him mother.

But how does Red reconcile that to himself? Becoming Reddington was a necessity but Red found freedom and happiness being Raymond Reddington. He was a better Reddington than the Original Reddington.

He celebrated life and for the first time in his whole life when he became Reddington he was no longer anyone’s puppet. Slowly in his role, he discovered who he was at last. Red found out what he liked and disliked, who he liked and disliked. Who he was attracted to and who he wasn’t attracted to.

What food he loved and hated. The clothes he liked remained similar in that Red still loved tailored clothes, and liked being put together.

He finally had an appetite and zest for life and that was missing growing up.

It’s why as much as he can, he will never deny himself anything he wanted again.

But also after all these years, Red realized he loved his younger self. He loved Katarina and missed her, and would in times of crisis have an imaginary talks with her.

He is often his own counsel. Sometimes, unwisely he subjects himself to Dom’s advice which only ends up making him feel worse.

I wish we knew what happened to Red’s mother after she was sent away for her own protection. I wonder if Red’s mother even knew? or I wonder if she wasn’t told because, of all people her opinion is the one Red valued the most?

So again that left Red with himself and his complicated thoughts about not wanting to be called “father” and not knowing how to feel about still wanting to be called Liz’s mother.

(Although, again this is not clear or textually maybe Red prefers to be just called Red or considered as a parent. This is one of the things the show doesn't clarify and played more ambiguous).

Who was Red going to talk to? Maybe Kate? But even before there was a distance between Kate and Red, and a power imbalance.

Dembe seems to be the only one who has Red’s total confidence still there is the power imbalance.

Red isn’t also the type to discuss matters of gender and sexuality when it pertains to himself. He can talk about anyone else’s.

Ivan and Ilya are also Cold war era guys who are as clueless.

But Tatiana Petrova, who Dom and Ilya sent out to die claiming she was Katarina but lived, knew. Or had enough of an inkling that when Tatiana discovered who Red really was, Tatiana was able to flaunt to Red that she could be Liz’s mother and Liz would believe and choose Tatiana over Red because Liz thought Tatiana was her mother.

The way Red looked at that taunt was because Tatiana knew Red won't tell Liz who he really is to her. The way it did alienate Liz from Red and how that triggered events that led to Nachalo (8x21).

It would just be so much easier to tell Liz at that point.

But even in this imaginary simulacrum of Katarina, she was shaky and terrified breath as Red and Katarina are finally asked this question. "Who became Reddington?"

And Red stalled and stalled and stalled. Telling Liz he would give the letter her mother wrote to her explaining everything after Liz killed him in a public spectacle so she could take over his empire.

For a smart man with brilliant plans, Red also has some stupid ones, and this was one of them.

Because how did he think it would go over??? Liz already accidentally killed her bio dad, and now she would accidentally on purpose kill her bio mother?

Red was doing suicide by Liz, seemingly forgotten what he told himself years ago when he talked himself out of suicide:

"--Every suicide. Every single one. Is an act of terror ‭perpetrated against everyone who's ever known you… Everyone who's ever loved you. The people closest to you… the ones who cherish you… are the ones who suffer the most pain, the most damage. Why would you do that?"

I know he thought it was the only way to keep Liz and his granddaughter safe, but at what cost?

And then his worst fear came true.

"I am her mother. And I am death to her."

The one thing Red dedicated his entire life to preventing. Liz/Masha dying in his arms, with all certainty knowing it was his fault.

And she died with Red unable to tell her, even though she did figure it out in death. Red didn't say it out loud to her, the one thing she's been wanting to know from him since they first met.

And he wasn't even able to tell his daughter who he really is to her.

(Also I was watching a scene in season 4 where Liz was reading Katarina's journal and Liz imagined reaching out to Katarina's hand and asking her where she was.

Imaginary Katarina vanished at the moment the door opened and Red entered).

A small snippet of my even smaller piece in progress.

The setup: it's AUish/canon divergent take on s6 through s9. Everything happens just the same (yeah, Don having sex with Liz as well), but for one tiny exception.

Donald does all that because he has found out first that Liz's the one to put Red into jail. And whilst he thinks Red belongs there, he recognizes that the good the TF has done is worth more. And Liz’s actions put the TF at risk. Also, at the same time, he figures it's an opportunity to dig into Red's identity vas well. Don's hoping to earn his trust with the intel he has about Liz. They have an arrangement—Ressler keeps Liz close and shares what he knows.

Unfortunately, Ressler isn't wired for this kind of game and gets caught up into shit real fast, and he's now torn between to whom his loyalties lie and his desire to do the right thing.

And so, it's post s8, Liz is dead, and Red is back after two years of absence. The investigation regarding Liz's death and her involvement with Marco Jancowicz is reopened again.

“Good evening, Agent Ressler.”

“You’re trespassing.”

“Don't shoot the messenger just yet. May I come in?”

“What do you want, Reddington?”

“Can’t the two friends catch up?”

“Since when do you have friends?”

“Well, I have you, don't I?”

“Get lost.”

“I was hoping to have a word with you.”

“You deaf or what?! Get out. Now.”

“Can’t do that now, I'm afraid. My sources say, the DOJ is looking for the Pazzi. With Elizabeth gone, they need a new face of domestic terrorism. And you, Donald, are on their radar.”

“Goddammit, Reddington, just get the fuck—”

“Donald, you’re going to jail.”

“I can't imagine how hard the past two years must've been for you.”

“Cut the crap. You give no shit just about anyone. Why should I be different, huh?”

“You look exhausted, Donald. Please, have a sit. New painkillers aren't working the way they should, are they?”

“You got one fucking minute or I swear I’m gonna shoot you.”

“Really? Your best option to get out? I don't think so. My car's waiting outside, if you're up to it.”

“Why are you doing this?”

“It’s the right thing to do.”

“Right thing my ass. You killed Keen's mother, Reddington. There's no coming back from that.”

“Katarina Rostova is dead—”

“Of course she is! You put two in her chest in front of Keen and walked away afterwards.”

“Donald, I know this must be challenging for you, but please make an effort to comprehend this—I did not kill Elizabeth’s mother. And speaking of challenges. Please humor me, how does one end up bedding a domestic terrorist?”

“Wh—Fucking—You fucking told me to keep Keen close and I did! I fucking told you everything!”

“Indeed you did, though I have an impression that you two have shared more than just a bed. Did you tell her?”

“Tell her what?”

“About our arrangement.”

“What?! Why would I?”

“Donald, are you Elizabeth’s quarterback now? Because from where I'm standing, it feels so. Are you?”

“If you had told her the truth—”

“—And if you kept your pants on, you wouldn't have found yourself in this predicament. But what's done is done.”

The Blacklist - Frederick Barnes Episode 1x8 - The Takoma Park House

I’m looking at this from the angle that Redarina WAS ALWAYS THE PLAN. not entertaining him being the real RR/Liz’s dad (although I was formerly DG) or a third man, for this little exercise. This is in retrospect as way back when, i had a completely different take on this house.

I will concede, the writers altered or dare I say... retconned this but it could in theory still work with Redarina with a little imagination.

Here’s what Katarina said in 821:

Katarina: The next two years were a blur of lies. I was married to a man I didn’t love. I had a child with the man I was targeting as a spy. My husband believed the baby was his, and my lover had no idea he was a mark. Real RR: We’d see each other when we could. Paris. Katarina: Moscow. Real RR: London. Katarina: St. Petersburg. Real RR: Berlin. Katarina: By then, I had lost any sense of myself. I was living a lie. Everything about me was pretend. Liz: And your wife, she never knew? Real RR: There were some close calls. Katarina: I even helped watch Jennifer one weekend while she was away. It was extremely uncomfortable, playing house.

So what I think looking at this from a Redarina pov and how this could work....

two things come to mind.

My first choice would be that when Red said he raised his family in that house... it was meant to be truthful story wise. This was ONLY the seventh episode in the series 8 years ago. My thought is that they hadn’t planned/mapped out Katarina’s (Red’s) backstory but this was supposed to be his house! HE SEEMS GENUINE. though we can’t rely on that. because criminals are notorious liars. Take the preposterous story he told Madeline Pratt for example that I’ve written about.

Anyways, It was later changed because well, Red is a Russian spy, it wouldn’t work him raising his family in America. Not to mention, he was busy raising Masha in Moscow and The Summer Palace with Alexander Kirk.

My second choice would be just to say that he’s speaking as the real RR but his identity is still Katarina.

Conclusion: We saw in Nachalo that the house ended up belonging to the real Raymond Reddington and his wife Carla. Red cannot be a third man raising his family in that house when it was the OG RR raising his family there. Katarina didn’t really raise her family there either.

Plot/writing sorta retcon. next up... Bubble Girl.

I keep going through the same debate - that of Liz’s born identity. Dialogues can be found for each character, but I’m trying to keep this as short as possible.

Alan Fitch

Knew Katarina had a daughter named Masha. He and Peter weren't on good terms, and he clearly didn't know Liz was Masha. If he did, he'd know why Red turned himself in. Every bit why I disregard Fitch as the person who exposed Liz’s born identity.

Anton Velov

Didn't know the name of Katarina's daughter, only that she had a daughter. Every bit why I disregard Velov as the person who exposed Liz’s born identity.

Ivan Stepanov

Ivan didn't know Liz was Masha until he actually saw her. Every bit why I disregard Stepanov as the person who exposed Liz’s born identity.

Constantin Rostov aka Alexander Kirk

Because he believed Liz was his daughter, she was necessary for his survival. Every bit why I disregard Rostov as the person who exposed Liz’s born identity.

Ilya Koslov

Being Katarina’s childhood friend, knowing the danger Liz’s identity would put her in, and him promising to protect Masha is every bit the reason why I disregard Koslov as the person who exposed Liz’s born identity.

Kathryn Nemec aka Mr. Kaplan

Working for Raymond, being Masha’s nanny, knowing the danger Liz’s identity would put her in, and her promise to protect Masha is every bit the reason why I disregard Kaplan as the person who exposed Liz’s born identity.

Dominic Wilkinson

Created an imposter Katarina for the sake of protecting his grandchild. Absurd if anyone believes he was the person who exposed Liz’s born identity.

Tatiana Petrova

Knew Liz was Masha, but appeared to be well and good in hiding. I have no reason to believe she exposed Liz’s born identity. Certainly not when Raymond was the very person keeping her safe in hiding.

Jennifer Reddington

Jennifer didn't even know she had a sister. They were separated when they were young. Every bit the reason why I disregard her as the person who exposed Liz’s born identity.

Dembe Zuma

Worked for Raymond, actually considers him a brother, and knew the danger Liz’s identity would put her in. Every bit the reason why I disregard Dembe as the person who exposed her born identity.

Sam Milhoan

Sam was the very man that raised her as his own daughter. Knowing the danger it would put her in, he’d never expose Liz, so he’s easy to disregard as the person who exposed her born identity.

Carla Reddington

She knew Liz was Masha. Possible for her to expose Liz's born identity, but not very likely. She told Red she didn’t say anything about him or Elizabeth, and I believe her.

Middle Man

Because these are the only characters who knew Liz was born Masha, and I can’t imagine any of them exposing her to the Cabal, there has to be a middle man. A friend, an employ, someone they’d trust enough to inform. To inform a middle man that Liz was born Masha, they had to know Katarina’s daughter by name and have reason to give it to said middle man. This dwindles the list to four names.

Alan Fitch

Fitch didn’t always have an agreement with Raymond. In fact, he set him up with Berlin, allowing him to believe that Raymond killed his daughter. It’s quite possible Fitch gave Berlin the name of Raymond’s daughter for the sake of getting to Raymond. What makes this unlikely, is the fact that Berlin gave no indication that he knew Raymond had two daughters. When he assumed his own daughter was Raymond’s daughter, I think it quite likely he assumed Zoe was Jennifer rather than assumed Zoe was Liz.

Carla Reddington

Carla could’ve informed the Cabal after Raymond put her in hiding, but again, I highly doubt she did. For the Cabal to get that intel from Carla, they’d first have to find her. When Raymond makes someone disappear, they literally disappear, and I highly doubt she’d put herself at risk of being killed by him for putting his daughter at risk.

Tatiana Petrova

Tatiana could’ve been aiming for her freedom earlier than they’ve shown on screen, but I think it more likely she’d go directly after Red. Because she believed Red to be the real Red, I highly doubt she’d put herself at risk of being killed by him for putting his daughter at risk.

Constantin Rostov aka Alexander Kirk

Constantin is my bet. He believed Masha was his biological daughter, so he’d most certainly go looking for his child. I wouldn’t be surprised if he spent the entire 30 years searching for her.

Constantin wasn’t able to enter the states because he’s just as much a criminal. Why take that risk when he can hire someone to find and deliver. The point of him hiring Scottie and Solomon to abduct her from her own wedding.

I’m suggesting Constantin hired someone prior to hiring Scottie. Someone who’d know Liz’s born identity because Constantin didn’t know Masha’s new identity. Had he known her new identity, he would’ve come for her a lot sooner. Whoever he hired to find Masha, that person could’ve leaked Liz’s born identity to the Cabal.

Expect Constantin Rostov to have a middle man, and that man be revealed to have leaked Liz’s born identity to the Cabal because Peter most certainly didn’t pull her name out of his ass.
