WIP Wednesday

I have several things in process at the moment. Well, you know me, I have about twenty things in process at the moment, but I have a couple of things that will be ready to go within the next week or so.

I should be fine-tuning my portions of Mardi Gras Mayhem (a collaborative effort with several other talented fic writers):

“Sorry, ladies,” Leo interrupted, “I couldn’t help but overhear-“

“Sure, you could,” the blonde answered, “You’ve been standing there staring at me since you got here.”

“Of course, I’m staring at the most beautiful woman in New Orleans!” he gave her the signature Rys smile, guaranteed to charm the pants off any woman.

She wasn’t having any though. With a roll of her eyes, she turned away.

“Didn’t I see you with your hands down some guy’s pants?” one of the other women asked.

“No, I mean yes, I mean that was my brother!”

“That makes it worse!” the woman exclaimed.

“No, it’s not like that!”

“So what’s your story?” the third woman asked.

“Well, if you must know, I'm a prince!” Leo dropped that bomb and waited. It always worked.

The blond turned back toward him with a snort, “Sure honey, everyone's a prince tonight. Come on girls, let’s get back to the party!”

“No, really!” Leo tried to follow them, “I'm going to be king one day!”

“Sure you are...”

“Wait!”

Leo bumped straight into the bouncer outside the door. The huge behemoth of a man grinned at him, “I’ll let you be my king tonight if you want!”

“Ah, thanks….but no…” Leo backed away dejectedly and smacked right into someone else....

Auvernese soldiers melted out of the night and descended upon them, pulling them apart.

They reached for each other but to no avail.

Riley was pulled from Drake’s grasp as she twisted her body around, trying to keep him in her sight.

“Riley! Riley!” He broke free and scrambled toward her, making it only a few feet before he was intercepted and wrestled to the ground.

But what I’m actually doing right now is this. Don’t ask me what it is, it does not fit into any universe I’ve already created. It’s brand new. It’s from TRR 3, The Unity Tour, the thing I said I’d never write but here we are.

Bit of backstory: Despite my reputation as a Drake stan, I have never turned down Liam’s proposal in game. Started playing TRR 3 with Drake as my fiancée and I’m now having the same issue with Liam that I had with Drake before: I miss their romance.

In most things I write with a triangle or poly situation, I have her marry Liam. But there’s an entirely different dynamic to be explored if the shoe is on the other foot. So without further ado, here is a snippet of….something:

The button-down shirt wasn’t a far cry from his usual, just dressier than denim. The jacket and slacks were an upgrade, but he still refused to wear a tie.

She didn’t care what he wore. The denim was fine with her. He was the one determined to fit into a world he’d always hated.

For her.

She sighed as she ran a hand down his chest and thought, not for the first time, that maybe she should have declined Liam’s request for help with…well, everything.

But she wanted to help him. She wanted to be involved. She liked making a difference in the world. And as it turned out, she was good at it! She fit seamlessly into Liam’s world.

But where did that leave her husband to be, she wondered as she watched him fidget with the collar of his shirt.

though her parents worked long hours, there was no lack of love in the houston household. it never really bothered malika growing up, besides there was always the company of her siblings. to this day, she credits her parents for the work ethic she has today. a daddy's girl from the day she was born. and a mother who always encouraged her to pursue her passions. from a young age, malika was taught the manners of a southern lady. like most southern girls she did pageants, but could also be found playing outside in the dirt with the boys.

as a kid, she was put into dance classes as an way to channel all the energy she had into something productive and fun. ever since then, malika fell in love with dance and hasn't looked back. she's studied many different styles of dance over the years - jazz, tap, hip hop, contemporary, and even some ballet. it wasn't long before she traded the pageants for dance competitions.

the first move to atlanta happened when she was eight years old. it took a little time to adjust but it wasn't bad. malika was a pretty easy going kid, could get along with most people. dance helped her to make new friends. six years later, the houston's packed up and moved again. this time to ohio when she was thirteen. it was a bit more difficult for her to leave her friends and the life she knew. she didn't want to go and made that known with pre-teen dramatics. throughout every big change in her life, dance was the one thing that was constant. and family.

after graduating high school, malika attended julliard. an accomplishment she had only dreamed of for so many years that had become a reality. moving to new york was the first major life decision she experienced on her own. it was the last time she moved, and she wasn't planning on doing so again. once she finished college, she settled in queens where she was a dance teacher, she taught young kids and the older teens as well. she auditioned and did a couple tours as a back up dancer for various singers here and there. it wasn't until she was hired to choreograph a music video for a huge artist that her name really started to be known and sought after. with the money earned from several high profile jobs, she now lives on the upper east side. she still enjoys teaching, although it's became more on the side than when she first started. one of her goals is to open her own studio someday.

upon first meeting, malika can sometimes come off a bit distant. she's always been that way with each move during her childhood. it just takes her some time to warm up to new people. she doesn't open up to just anybody. but once she does let you in, she's a great friend to have in your corner. she is dedicated to her craft, but also loves to have a good time with friends. she worked hard to get where she is, after all. damn if she won't enjoy it. she's close with her family, especially her older brother. while she is doing quite well for herself, she is happy to be able to do what she loves without being super famous to the general public. it grants her privacy and a sense of normalcy a bit more than that of some of her peers.

Katherine Addison’s The Grief of Stones is a novel I scarcely feel capable of reviewing as it deserves. Addison’s The Goblin Emperor is rightly considered a modern classic, a storytell­ing tour-de-force, and other books set in the same world were long-awaited. This anticipa­tion culminated last year, with The Witness for the Dead, a mystery novel and the opening volume of a projected trilogy (The Cemeteries of Amalo) starring Thana Celehar, a secondary figure in The Goblin Emperor and the titular Witness for the Dead. The Grief of Stones is a direct sequel to The Witness for the Dead, and it is every bit as intimately operatic.

Celehar is a prelate of Ulis, god of the dead, in the city of Amalo. He can speak to the recently dead, see the last thing they saw, experience the last thing they felt. His gifts mean it’s his duty to settle disputes – like over the contents of a will – and, sometimes, to solve murders. Celehar is a solemn, serious man, haunted in more ways than one. His talent for hearing the dead means he experiences some of the worst things that people do to each other, and he carries a great grief over the death of a past lover. Celehar’s someone whose moral centre is rock-solid, which sometimes means his sense of empathy conflicts with his sense of justice. He also undervalues his own worth by a significant degree.

The Grief of Stones is the second novel in The Cemeteries of Amalo trilogy. Celehar is asked to investigate the sudden death of a noblewoman, now three months dead, whose husband believes she was murdered. Celehar’s investigation leads him – somewhat surpris­ingly – to Amalo’s less reputable demimonde of pornographic photographers, and to a school for foundling girls, and along the way he comes across evidence for an arguably even cruel­ler crime than murder. That criminal wants Celehar to confront an ancient and murderous phantom – a phantom that has killed everyone who ever came within its reach.

What compels me about a mystery novel is almost never the mystery itself. A mystery on its own is merely a puzzle, and I’ve never fallen in love with a puzzle, however perfectly constructed. No, what I enjoy is the world in which the mystery takes place, and the char­acters who move through it. The social world, and the physical atmosphere, like those evoked by Sujata Massey in The Widows of Malabar Hill or by Barbara Hambly in her Benjamin January mysteries, or depicted with such adroit­ness by Dorothy L. Sayers in classics like Nine Tailors or Gaudy Night. There are omplex worlds, whose social dynamics inform both the mystery itself and its resolution, populated by characters who are unmistakably products of their worlds, and in the case of the investi­gators, astute observers of their worlds who straddle the line between belonging to their communities and being caught outside them. It is very seldom that a fantasy mystery novel manages to create this richness and depth and wholeness to their worlds, which means that it’s seldom I love a fantasy mystery (as opposed to a fantasy adventure), but Addison does it in The Cemeteries of Amalo with a seeming ef­fortlessness that can only be the product of a prodigious amount of skill and work. Amalo – and its extended world – feels real in everything from the corners of its cemeteries to its urban and religious politics, its rooming houses and eateries and (occasionally) cash-poor nobility, to its opera houses, prostitutes, and pornogra­phers. It’s rich in a way that extends beyond the page, an imagined city that feels as though it has as many layers as Oxford or New Orleans, London or Mumbai.

The Grief of Stones is, in a way, a novel about outsiders, about the overlooked and the looked-down-upon. And it’s a novel suffused with grief: almost all of the characters here, from Celehar himself and his new ‘‘apprentice’’ (Tomasaran, a widow-turned-Witness-for-the-Dead with no training in the prelacy) on down, are touched in some way by death, affected by it, carrying private griefs with them, and learn­ing to deal with them. Or hopefully to heal from them. The emotional arc of the trilogy so far appears to be Celehar moving towards healing, in some degree, from the worst effects of his oldest and deepest grief. (Perhaps one day he and the flamboyant opera-writer Pel-Thenhior will be more than good friends, but Celehar is not quite ready for that yet.)

It’s a novel I loved, and one I’ll be revisiting to linger over again. Addison has striking command of language, a precision of phrase that’s a delight to read and a pleasure to read again. If you enjoy atmospheric, thoughtful, well-characterised mys­teries with compelling characters and a compe­tent, kind, and modest protagonist, I recommend The Grief of Stones highly. Hell, even if you don’t think you like such things, try this one (or its predecessor). It’s a great book.
