Damn, I just saw the news. R.I.P. Akira Toriyama. You made a massive impact in many people's lives, and affected the world of animation and manga moreso than almost anyone else can say. Thank you for creating the wonderful world of Dragon Ball, introducing everyone to Goku, one of the biggest icons in animation, and for creating so many fond memories for me and other fans. You'll always be remembered, and your creations will be cherished forever.

been a while since i've drawn this guy, huh?
only spent about an hour on this but i felt like i should do something in celebration of toriyama's legacy. while dragon ball may not have radically changed my life or anything like that it was still a pretty big part of my teenage years (i think it's still my longest lasting hyperfixation to date, actually) and i probably wouldn't quite be the same person i am today without it.
rest in peace, toriyama-san. and thanks for everything.

watching dragon ball alone in my bedroom on an old, small, and dusty tv at 5 in the afternoon is without exaggeration the first memories i have of my life. so clear, yet so distant.
i remember doodling dragon ball characters almost every day in primary school. and even when i didn't draw them specifically, you could tell that "art" for me looked like toriyama's style. those drawings were my first exposure to the that world, and that was my starting point for anything i've ever drawn.
funny story: the hardest i've ever cried as a kid (and kind of in general), was watching the final minutes of the final episode of dragon ball GT, where the intro song "dan dan kokoro hikareteku" plays over a montage of all of dragon ball from beginning to end. i had been following goku since he was a kid in OG dragon ball almost daily since i could remember. kid me couldn't take the idea of him being gone forever. he was my best friend.
i watched that episode on the day of my BIRTHDAY, like 2 hours before i had to go to my party at an arcade restaurant we invited my friends to. i was A MESS. just sitting in our car sobbing uncontrollably while my mom didn't know what the fuck was wrong with me as i couldn't speak. must have been like 8-9 years old, maybe?
last year i thought to myself "why don't i have that song on my playlist?" and decided to look up this ending again out of curiosity. i was once again reduced an absolute wreck as a 27 year old adult in 2 minutes. i couldn't believe how primal these emotions of mine were, as i hadn't watched or cared much about this show in forever, but i suppose it is impossible to completely remove something that was once so core to your life, regardless of how much time has passed lmao. so here i am, tearing up once again.
i know i'm just rambling here, but seeing so many people on social media talk about their experiences with anything that toriyama-san had created really made me start reminiscing on my own experiences with dragon ball and how much it meant to me.
the reach he had on the entire planet cannot be overstated. through comic books, anime, videogames... be it dragon ball, dragon quest, chrono trigger, dr. slump, sand land, etc. and that is without even considering the unquantifiable amount of art that was inspired directly by his work, and the people that were then inspired in turn.
he's touched so many lives of all ages across time. and will continue to do so, as is the nature of art itself.
watching my favorite show. collecting cards with my favorite characters on them. frequenting my favorite AMVs of my favorite moments. playing my favorite videogames with my friends after school... the list goes on.
thank you for all the memories.
thank you, akira toriyama. rest in peace.

Two proud, fierce, spiky-haired warriors face each other across a rocky chasm… but why do they both feel so strangely familiar to the other?! A battle for honour is surely about to begin!
Through Dragonball, Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest, Akira Toriyama had a massive influence on my childhood. I think it’s also pretty fair to say that Pokemon, and especially Lance, would not be the same without his stylistic influence on Ken Sugimori’s early work. So, for all the thrills and inspiration, both to myself and many others, thank you so much Toriyama-san, and rest in peace.
I had so much fun designing a Toriyama-style DBZ design for Lance, putting in a bit of flavour from both his Gen 1 red biker and Gen 2 pointed armour looks. The dramatic cape flourish also pulls a bit from his HGSS art pose, just for fun (and flair)
I learnt a lot picking apart and studying different Dragonball panels and colour spreads to make this crossover tribute, but perhaps the most striking thing was re-reading chunks of DBZ and realising just how good at weekly pulp adventure story pacing Toriyama was.
I already knew he had perhaps the best grasp of dynamic, crystal clear action panelling in the business, but his ability to pace out a weekly story and always have some new twist or wrinkle while maintaining a solid, driving central narrative really stood out to me this time. And that’s not even mentioning all the ad-libbing!
One of the greatest to ever do it in so very many different ways - I am sure his work will continue to inspire not just artists in our current generation, but many young artists in the future as well.

I haven't interacted with his work much until recently, but I still respect him and everything he's done for everyone. I hope he rests in peace.

It was late summer 1999 when my brothers and I caught a late afternoon block on Cartoon Network, and it had Dragon Ball Z playing. We were instantly hooked. Even in the hopes of watching more of it later on that day, we stumbled upon more anime (adult swim) but still made sure to watch it every afternoon from the Namek Saga to the Buu Saga. Dragon Ball Z & Dragon Ball weren't merely TV shows we watched; they were some of the first things my brothers and I witnessed that allowed our creativity to flourish. We would spend afternoons trying to recreate Dragon Ball Z characters and show them off to our elementary school classmates the next day, receiving high praise for our young talents. I myself now understand that I was tapping into my early musical talents by being able to hum the Dragon Ball Z theme and ending by memory and with perfect pitch involved. Our love and passion for our collective art and admiration for the show continued on well into today, with me keeping up with the latest manga chapters and video game releases. Needless to say, I've been a Dragon Ball/Z/Super fan my entire life.
But Dragon Ball also served as an entryway into my love for Dragon Quest, another creative subsidiary from Toriyama (the creator of Dragon Ball). "Dragon Quest Fanfare" is a VERY important music composition to me. It exemplified bravery, courageousness, and it felt like I was hearing the embodiment of rightness in the world. I first played Dragon Quest when I was in the 10th Grade, and hearing that opening fanfare really shifted something in me, which was me embracing my love for music and composition, which would go onto being my life's passion and a part of my life's purpose.
Akira Toriyama, the creator of The Dragon Ball Manga & Anime, and a designer for the Dragon Quest series, passed away on March 1st, and we were made aware of his passing several minutes ago. To say that my heart is breaking is an understatement. Life for me so far hasn't been easy, but those times during my youth watching Dragon Ball and playing DQ for the first time, happen to hold my most precious memories. Memories during a time where every day felt good and peaceful. I can say I'm sad because endings are particularly hard for me, but I want to hope the enjoyment I'll have with the Dragon Ball Manga, Video Games, & Anime, as well as the Dragon Quest Games & Soundtracks, will be a continuation of his life and legacy. I hope he loved his life to the fullest, and I don't know if I can thank him enough for the impact he has had on my life, but I'll thank him as often as I can remember for it.
Rest well, Toriyama-San

"The Earth just draw the attention of some of the most despicable beings the universe has to offer. If something isn't done soon, we could find ourselves in a lot of trouble. what can we do? We could try to wish our enemies away, but even the great Shenron might be powerless against their tremendous strength. Goku is the greatest Warrior the Earth has ever known. Yet to these Saiyans, he's nothing more than an inconvenience. I wonder if King Kai's instruction will even help? Until Goku returns, it seems Gohan is our best hope. He's young though, and there's so little time." -          Kami, Dragon Ball Z Kai (Ep. 04)
The Toonami Trending Rundown for March 2-4, 9-10, and 16-17, 2024. The 27th anniversary of the better cartoon came on a somber note, as it was reported on March 8th that Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball franchise, had passed away on March 1st at the age of 68 due to acute subdural hematoma. Dragon Ball is considered to be Toonami’s greatest success story, as since DBZ first aired in the lineup back in 1999, the show led the charge to bring about the 90’s-2000’s anime boom and the overall popularity of anime in the west today.
And as the anime world paid their respects to a legend, Toonami fans celebrated the life and legacy of Toriyama the best way they knew how, by enjoying Dragon Ball Z on Toonami.
Toonami made a quick tribute to Toriyama during the night of March 9 as the news came on short notice for the Toonami staff. But for the following week on the night of March 16-17, following the regular schedule (save for One Piece and Naruto which took the night off), Toonami aired a marathon of the first eight episodes of DBZ Kai.

On a more positive note, on March 8, Viz Media and Toonami announced that Zom 100, the hit new anime series by Haro Aso and Kotaro Takata, will be airing on Toonami beginning this March 30, 2024 at 12:30 a.m. Zom 100 will be replacing Demon Slayer on the lineup, which will be going on hiatus from the block after completing the Entertainment District Arc the week before on March 23. There is no word when Toonami and Aniplex plan on airing the show’s next season, the Swordsmith Village Arc, at this time.
Tumblr media
In an interview with Variety released on March 22, James Gibbons, President of Warner Bros Discovery’s Asia-Pacific division, revealed that WBD plans on increasing its anime output for 2024 and beyond, saying “We have a Japanese anime studio, which has been producing five or ten anime series per year, over the last few years. [...] We’ve approved expansion to take that to more than ten series per year.” How many of those titles Toonami itself will get to broadcast is yet to be seen, but it's a good sign that WBD remains committed to anime overall.

Tune in tonight for the finale of Demon Slayer’s Entertainment District Arc, among other great moments. Do note that as the season finale of Demon Slayer is 45 minutes long, every show after will air 15 minutes later than usual tonight. Stay gold as always, and Toriyama-san, may you rest in peace in the Other World and thank you for everything. Until we meet again.

The news of Akira Toriyama’s passing hit many of us hard. His works have greatly influenced so many, not just in the anime and manga industry, but likely across a variety of different industries. Dragonball in its entirety is a behemoth, and will likely continue to be in the future. Dragonball was one of my childhood anime shows, and I enjoyed playing Chrono Trigger when I finally got my hands on it.
My tribute to Akira Toriyama is this fanart of Trunks, Vegeta and Bulma’s son. He was my crush, and will always have a special place in my heart. I’ve drawn him since I was a teen, and did this for the nostalgia. It's my take on a classic photo of Trunks that you may see around the Internet.
Rest in peace, Toriyama-san. Thank you.

Here's some more Dragonball Z fanart featuring some of my favorite characters: Guldo, Chiaotzu, and Gohan. However, this art piece isn't exactly a happy one. You probably might get the hint as to why I say this already, but I'll give you some details.
As a lifelong fan of Dragonball, I was shocked to hear that the creator of the series, Akira Toriyama, had passed away roughly over a week ago. It was like reading news articles about how Toriyama-san was about to announce some new projects and spinoff works he was working on; then, suddenly, the next day, I found out that he was gone. According to official reports, Toriyama-san's cause of death was acute subdural hematoma.  Basically, this is a form of severe head injury in which bleeding fills up the brain area and causes brain tissue to compress. I will leave a hyperlink in case anyone wants to know more about it, but anyway, back to Toriyama...
When I was much younger, I would watch Dragonball and Dragonball Z on Cartoon Network's Toonami and Miguzi segments. Sometimes I would find myself hurrying back home or to my grandma's house from school and my afterschool program to catch the latest episode. I would watch Goku's adventures religiously and see what kind of friends, rivals, and enemies he'd make along the way. I was also a big fan of the Dragonball Z video games, including DBZ: Budokai, The Legacy of Goku, Dragonball FighterZ, Super Dragonball Heroes: World Mission, and DBZ: Kakarot. I would play DBZ: Budokai 3 non-stop with my cousin whenever I went to his house to play his PS2 with him. I still wish I had my PS2 so I could relive my DBZ gaming memories, but I still have Dragonball FighterZ, Super Dragonball Heroes, and DBZ: Kakarot. Matter of fact, I want to return to Dragonball FighterZ at some point since the online modes have been overhauled with rollback netcode. I also want to go back to DBZ: Kakarot at some point to finish playing the game and DLCs!
Fast-forward several years later, I remember not too long ago that during the COVID pandemic, I would binge-watch the original Dragonball series and a portion of the Dragonball Z series while exercising on a machine in the comfort of my home. It was my favorite pastime and a great way for me to lose weight while doing so. In fact, I plan on continuing to binge-watch the original Dragonball Z series with the Kikuchi musical score real soon.
I'm still very shocked and saddened by the fact that Toriyama-san is no longer with us, but as a Dragonball fan and appreciator of his works, I will always keep his stories close to my heart. Dragonball is a series that has given me a reason to never give up on life and everything that I do. It's something that helps me get pumped to exercise, become a better person, and never stop improving myself in the long run. So, to give Toriyama-san a proper sendoff, I'm going to refrain from trying to collect the Dragon Balls to bring him back to life, salute him for all his hard work and his efforts to make my childhood the best childhood I've ever had, and keep his memories and works alive!
Thank you so much for the memories, Toriyama-san. May you rest in peace.
