Hannah Snell “The Woman in Men's Cloaths”
Hannah Snell was born on 23 April 1723 in Worcester, England. She moved to London in 1740 and married James Summes, a Dutch Sailor, on 6 January 1744. Two years later their daughter Susannah was born and died after only one year. Her husband had left her while she was still pregnant and now without husband and child she saw no other way out than to look for him.

Hannah Snell, a woman who passed as a soldier. Mezzotint by J. Young, 1789, after R. Phelps. (x)
She borrowed men's clothes from her brother-in-law James Gray and used his name. According to her account, following the death of her daughter, on 23 November 1745, she joined John Guise's regiment, the 6th Regiment of Foot, in the army of the Duke of Cumberland against Bonnie Prince Charlie. She deserted when her sergeant gave her 500 lashes and moved to Portsmouth and joined the Marines. At this point it was not true, because the events and dates she gave, as well as the chronologies of her life, make it unlikely that she served under John Guise.
Rather, after the death of her daughter, she went to Portmouth to look for him and learned that he had been executed for murder. What motivated her to join the Marines is not clear. Some historians suggest that she had hoped to find him at sea or at a naval base and joined the Marines before learning of his death. What is certain, however, is that she boarded HMS Swallow on 23 October 1747 and sailed for Lisbon on 1 November of the same year. In August 1748, her unit was sent on an expedition to capture the French colony of Pondicherry in India. She later also took part in the Battle of Devicotta in June 1749. She was wounded eleven times in the legs and once in the groin. She either managed to treat her groin wound without revealing her sex, or she enlisted the services of a compassionate Indian nurse.

In 1750, her unit returned to Britain and travelled from Portsmouth to London, where she revealed her gender to her shipmates on 2 June. She asked the Duke of Cumberland, the commander-in-chief of the army, for her pension. She was then honourably discharged and, because of her good service, was promised a pension in November 1750. Hoping for the pension but uncertain that she would receive it, she sold her story in June to Robert Walker, a publisher in London, who published it in two different editions.

Curious about who this woman was, more and more people wanted to see her and so she appeared in public and in theatres in her uniform and told of her adventures, showed her fighting skills and sang marching songs. Three painters painted portraits of her in her uniform and The Gentleman's Magazine also covered her story in July.

After her pension was approved Hannah retired to Wapping and began running a pub called The Female Warrior or The Widow in Masquerade - sources disagree on this - but it did not last long. She then moved to Newbury in Berkshire in the mid-1750s. In 1759 she married a second time to a man called Richard Eyles, with whom she had two children. And in 1772 she married a third time to a man called Richard Habgood from Welford, also in Berkshire, and they moved to the Midlands. In 1785 she was living with her son George Spence Eyles, a clerk, in Church Street, Stoke Newington, but in that year her pension was withdrawn.

She appeared to be suffering from Alzheimer's disease and her health deteriorated gradually but not dramatically. This suddenly changed in 1791. she was admitted to Bethlem Hospital on 20 August and died on 8 February 1792. she was then buried in Chelsea Hospital, which had already been a hospital and let's call it an old people's home for veterans of the British army and also functioned like the Royal Navy Hospital in greenwhich is now even an old people's and nursing home.

From Glens Falls to Chester: The Mills family in the Adirondacks
This was originally the second chapter in my family history on the Mills family, but has been adapted and changed for this blog. All the sources are noted in a bibliographic essay at the end of this post, with maps and other photos throughout. Enjoy! This was originally posted on the WordPress version of this post. It has been split in a few posts so it is more readable on here.
By 1860, the Mills family was still in Bolton. John Mills was said to be 54 years old, still a miller, and his wife Margaret, age 36, was listed as a housekeeper. There were nine children in the household. Two of them, Joseph B., age 18, and Thomas, age 14, were farm laborers, presupposing that the Mills family owned a farm in Bolton. While Hetabella, age 18, did housework, the other children seemed to be too young to be listed with occupations. They included Edward (age 12), Dory A (age 10), Mary J (age 6), John C (age 4), Margaret E (age 3) and Benjamin W. (age 3/12). Bolton was similar to what it was in 1855, still undoubtedly having an agricultural and working-class character.
Four years later, in 1864, a woman named Margaret E. Mills declared loyalty to US, withdrawing loyalty to Great Britain and Ireland. This woman is likely Margaret Bibby. Unfortunately she did not state her age or place of birth.
The following year, 1865, the Mills family had moved back to Chester. John Mills was a 60-year-old farmer with his wife Margaret, 40 years old. This is the first census which states the number of John and Margaret’s children, which numbers 12! Within the household in the frame house, were 10 children, meaning that two of her children were not in the household. The names of those two children are not currently known. This census was the first to name Robert B. Mills, a person who was 2 ½ years old. Others in the household included Hattie B. Mills (age 21), Joseph B Mills (age 20), Thomas Mills (age 18), Edward Mills (age 18), Dora A. Mills (age 14), Mary J. Mills (age 9), John C. Mills (age 7), Margaret E Mills (age 5), and William Mills (age 4). With such a big family, it is likely that Hattie (same as Hetabella) took care of the family, especially Dora, Mary, John C., Margaret E., and William, who were younger than her. Joseph B. and Thomas likely worked on the farm with their father. This can only be inferred as the census does not state this directly.
Chester seemed to the same in some respects as it was when the Mills family lived there in the late 1830s and early 1840s. Nearby to the Mills family was the family of George Bibby. He was a 46-year-old farmer born in Ireland, with a family of six: his wife Ann born in the county, age 30, has five children, now married; Helen, age 9, Katherine, age 7, Samuel, age 6, William, age 4, and George, age 1 and 8/12. Also living in the household is his father, Samuel Bibby, age 67, born in Ireland, a laborer.
Another family nearby was Thomas Bibby’s family, living in the household of the Wallaces. Hewas age 28, born in Ireland, a farmer and married to someone named Mary A. Bibby (age 25, born in Warren). There is also a family of Thomas Mills (age 59, born in Ireland, farmer) nearby who has a wife named Margaret (age 53, born in Ireland, has 12 children), John (age 23), Edward L (age 21), Margaret (age 19), Phebe (age 15), Thomas J (age 11), and Ellen Gray (sister, age 60, born in Ireland). It is not known if any of the Mills children were living with these individuals at the time, but is likely that they were living somewhere in Chester.
By 1870, the Mills family was still living in Chester. John Mills was a 66-year-old farmer married to Margaret, age 48. In the household was their 23-year-old son, Joseph B., a carpenter, their 21-year-old son, Edward E, a farm laborer, and their 19-year-old daughter, Dora A, a teacher. At home were the rest of the children, Mary J (age 17), John C (age 14), Maggie (age 11), Willie or William (age 7), and Robert or RBM II (age 5). Both John and Margaret noted that they had parents of foreign birth. Also on the same page was Samuel Bibby (age 73 born in Ireland), Thomas Mills (age 64, farmer, born in Ireland), his wife Margaret (age 57, born in Ireland), Thomas Bibby (age 34, born in Ireland).
As the years passed by, John and Margaret were getting older. As her Find A Grave entry reports, since she has no visible gravestone photo, she died in 1874 in Minerva, Essex County, New York. This cannot be disproved or proven by any records on the subject.
The 1875 census shows a 70-year-old John Mills still living in Chester, as a farmer, with seven children in the household. These included his son Joseph B, a 29-year-old millwright, his daughter Dora, 24-years-old, his daughter Mary, 21-years-old, his son John C, 18-years-old, his daughter Maggy, 16-years-old, his son William, 14-year-old, and his daughter Hattie, 31-years-old. The latter was married to a 37-year-old carpenter named Hannibal Hammond and had a 12-year-old child named Ellen. It is important to note that Margaret is not in the household, so from this record, her death date can be ante 1875, or more accurately sometime between 1870 and 1875. While the census takers could have missed her, considering she was in every since census since 1850 seems to indicate that she was not alive.
The families of Isaac Mills and George Bibby were also living in the area. Isaac Mills’s family consists of: Isaac (born in Ireland, age 62, farmer), Ann (wife, age 46, born in Ireland), Joseph W (age 26, born in Warren, farmer?), Edward B? (farmer? Age 24, born in Warren), Mary (age 21, born in Warren), James O (age 20, born in Warren). George Bibby’s family consists of: George (age 53, farmer, born in Ireland), Ann (wife, age 40, born in Warren), Ellen (age 20, born in Warren), Caty (age 20, born in Warren), Samuel (age 16, born in Warren), William B (age 18, born in Warren), Albert (age 8, born in Warren), Humbert, (8 11/12 months, born in Warren), and Samuel (father, age 78, born in Ireland, likely a farmer of some type). These two families may have been connected together by marriage or even Isaac could have been John Mills’s brother. Sadly, those specifics are not completely known.
In 1876, John Mills died in Minerva, Essex County, New York, apparently while he continued his job as a miller. I have contacted appropriate historical societies in hopes of gathering more information. It is possible that Mills family members were living in that area of New York, or even Bibby family members since his wife Margaret was buried there. Perhaps she was going on a trip to bisit her cousins or even her parents. We don’t know exactly but can only make historical suppositions.
To this day, the Warren County Historian’s Office has family files on the Mills and Bibby families. 17 individuals with the Mills surname living in Ireland (mainly in Cork) and two with the Bibby surname were living near or around Kilkenny at the time (1876).
By 1876, with the death of John Mills, the twelve children he fathered with his wife Margaret, were on their own. Each of them would chart their own, independent path. As Charles Frederic Goss wrote many years later, RBM I, was only 10 (or 12) when his father died. This likely had a strong psychological effect on him, as it would on anyone, especially one who is that young. It meant that those such as RBM I, his brother William, and other younger siblings had to make their own way.
By 1876, Dora was only 25-years-old, if we use the age in the 1875 census. She likely did not even know of the Packard family in Massachusetts or of a man named Cyrus Winfield Packard, who was only 24 at the time, and would later be her husband. She had not, like Cyrus, run away from home at a young age. This is not because she worked more than Cyrus, who came from a family of hard-working farmers who had roots dating back to Samuel Packard, an immigrant from England in 1638, and had moved from eastern Massachusetts, mainly in Bridgewater, to Western Massachusetts, specifically in Cummington and Plainfield. Instead, she possibly found at least some value in her life as a teacher and likely helping around the home (and probably the farm). This would serve her well in years to come.

No kiss. very fine morning F48 ½° at 7 25 am out at 7 ¾ - a few minutes minutes with Charles H- and then off to High Roydes - found Holt at breakfast - going this morning to settle about 200 DW of coal (upper and lower bed) he had just bought of Waddington adjoining Mr Walker Priestley’s coal - will come to Shibden at 11 am tomorrow - the Machans cannot agree about the money they are to have for their coal; but Holt is sure of the coal - thinks I may get more water by driving down towards Dove house asked for his vote - he had said he would not vote at all - I said we would talk about it - home at 9 - breakfast till 10 – some time with my father and Marian. Had my hair pinched and dressed Mr Dearden, commonly called colonel, came about 11 ½ for about ¾ hour - had sandwiches and wine - both of us very civil to each other - apologized for the liberty I had taken in sending for him - shewed the plans and explained - he seemed delighted with the whole thing - said it would be a great advantage for the town - a good Inn and large handsome room were much wanted - I said the estate was £5000 and I expected the cost would be £600 - and the interest of this even at 4 p.c. = £24 present rent £84 and probably I could not get more than £300 a year rent now - there was no prospect of gain - I only calculated what would be the least loss - I should call the large room the Casino - everybody would see that it was not a mercantile speculation - but I had a pride in the thing - only anxious to know whether I could get the house licensed or not before I embarked in some serious expense - Mr D- thought there was no doubt - he said he would answer for himself and his son and promised to consult with the other magistrates on the subject - hoped I should be repaid in the end - Carr (of Halifax) had offered £1500 a year for the Bull mouth in London and it could not be taken that large Inns when well accustomed let very high - Mr. D- asked for my name to the subscription for Mr. Wortley’s (John) election for the West Riding - about 7 or 8 names down for £50 - said I would turned over the leaf and give them £30 - Mr. D- urged so well that I laughed and said well! if you will secure me the licence I will put down my name for £50 - yes! said he ‘I will answer for the licence’ and I put my name down for £50 - then sometime with A- and told my father and Marian a little of what had passed - saw A- mounted on her pony about 2 and off to Brighouse to Mrs Earnshaw to inquire about a Sunday school teacher - then my aunt had Mr Jubb and my father also had him to examine his ear, he is so very deaf - sometime with Mr J- not sanguine about Mr Wortley - but hopes this will be an introduction and we shall bring him at the next general election - then out with Charles Howarth- sawing planks for laundry chamber floor - then had Mr Bradley - he came to ask me for the loan of £6 till next Monday when he would certainly repay me - I not at all believing this said I begged he would take the money on account - this does not look well - I am afraid of this beginning to borrow of me - did not detain him long - just took him to the fish pond saying I had now determined to let the water rise as high as the top of the dry bridge arch which plan he liked very much - then with Richard Woodhead and his son railing in Little field and with Robert Schofield and his man mending the upper Conery wall against Walker pit road - then sauntering about and musing about the fish pond and came in about 6 ¼ - Dinner at 6 ½ - A- in great hope of Mrs Earnshaw’s finding her a Sunday school mistress - had John Bottomely and Rober Schofield and paid the former his bill for carting good soil to near the fish pond and settled with the latter for the days’ labour up to yesterday evening - had Thomas Pearson today he thought he had found me a black pony that would do for the gin price £5.10.0 - coffee - ¼ hour with my father and Marian - then read a very little of the newspaper - note from Captain Dearden - warm thanks for my £50 subscription and asking me to use my influence with William Moore of Staups and 1 or 2 more - wrote note in answer  vid. line 6 below that I had got Thomas Pearson’s vote - did not despair of Holt, and had neutralized George R- who would be in Scotland - said I did not know [Job] Hanson of upper Shibden Hall - had just written my note when hearing a Mr Bent had brought Captain D-‘s note went downstairs into the drawing room - Mr B- a very respectable young man (of Mytholm Royde A- says) and warm friend to the cause - had wine and seemed much pleased with his visit and staid about ½ hour - I wanted my time for other things but no matter - sent my note by Mr Bent - then with A- who was writing to her sister - with my aunt ¼ hour till 10 ¼ - then wrote to go by George tomorrow morning letter to Mr. Thomas about John Clarke and to Mr George cooper about the chesnut fillies and wrote note to Mr Bateman enclosing £35 for the fillies alias ponies which took me till 11 3/4 pm at which hour F53° - fine day - Letter this morning from Mr Jonathan Gray and from Mr Thomas - letter this afternoon from M- and letter this evening from Monsieur Gaudin Geneva - particulars of which to be given by and by - Long in getting into bed on account of cousin.

Beauty and the Beast ~Pennywise Imagine~
Part One | Part Two
Summary: You come back to Derry after having to go to a mental hospital. Even though everything’s the same, there’s one person or thing that had changed. When you reunite with Pennywise, something happens that changes both of your lives.
Author’s Note: Not sure if this is good but I wrote something. I feel like it’s not as good but I feel happy I made this third part.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You walk inside your room where everything was still the same. You looked around as everything was still there, the way you left it.
“If you need anything, anything at all, we’re downstairs,” Your mother tells you before walking away. You change into something more comfortable before walking downstairs.
“I’m going to walk around. Get familiar with the place again,” You tell them.
“Please be safe,” Your mother tells you. You nodded at her before walking around.
You walked to the lake nearby making you sit by it. You stared at it as you remember swimming there with your friends. You touched the cold water with your fingers before getting up.
When you turn around, you jump in shock as you saw Henry Bowers and his gang behind you. You stared in shock and in fear as you came face to face with your bully.
“Heard the freak was back. So, tell me Y/N, what’s it like in the mental asylum,” Henry asked, walking over to you.
“It was a hospital. Not a asylum,” You tell him. You noticed that he took out his knife making you even more scared. You started to run but you heard Henry and his gang run after you.
“Come back here!” Henry yelled.
You ran quicker now. You made it to a tunnel that lead to the sewers. You looked back as you heard Henry and his gang. You quickly ran inside and looked around.
“Pennywise? Pennywise? Please help me,” You said running around. You stop to catch your breath. You heard footsteps making you look around.
“Pennywise?”
You felt someone grab you making you scream. You saw Henry pull out his knife and holding it against your neck.
“Got you now,” He taunted.
“Please let me go,” You begged.
“Let her go,” You both looked over to see Pennywise as his human counterpart, Robert Gray. Henry looked at you and then at Pennywise.
“Fine,” Henry said, throwing you over to him. Pennywise caught you and looked at you.
“Are you okay?” Pennywise asked.
You were crying at this point from your emotions. You nodded until Pennywise moved you behind him and shifted into his clown form. He started to run towards Henry who screamed and threw something at him before leaving.
Due from the lack of light, you didn’t see what he threw. Was it a rock? You never saw Henry Bowers without his knife, making it the last option you’d guess. Once Henry was gone, you walked over to Pennywise who was barely moving.
“Pennywise?” you asked in worry. He turned over to see the knife by his heart.
“Oh my god,” You said before helping him up. You walked towards where the light was mostly at before setting him down by the wall.
“Can’t you heal?” You asked.
“I can’t,” He tells you.
“But you’re an alien who can heal. Right?” You ask him.
“Yes but I was suppose to go into hibernation today. Then you showed up,” Pennywise said.
“But you can still heal. Right?” You ask him.
“I haven’t eaten since you left. I felt lost without you... He felt lost without you,” Pennywise tells you.
“I need to get you to your lair,” You tell him. You help him up and lead him to his lair. You put him down on his nest before staring down at him.
“I need to take the knife out of you,” You tell him.
“Why did you stay? You should’ve left me. I caused you a lot of pain,” Pennywise said.
“Because I’m still in love with the person I knew. I’m still in love with Robert Gray,” You tell him.
“He loves you too,” Pennywise tells you.
“But you need him to live,” You tell him.
“I don’t need him anymore. I’ll posses someone else. You can have him,” Pennywise said.
“What about you?” You ask confuse.
“I have to hibernate. Besides, we both do not want you alone for 27 years,” Pennywise tells you. You leaned down and kissed his cheek.
“Thank you,” You whispered.
“Back up,” Pennywise said. You did as he said before a bright light started to slowly shine through. You covered your eyes to prevent from being blind. What felt like forever, you felt hands on your wrist to uncover your eyes.
You look up to see Robert Gray standing in front of you smiling. His dark, smooth hair was neatly combed. His green-hazel eyes were full of happiness. He was in normal clothing but his pale skin glowed in the low light.
“Robert?” You ask.
“Hi, Y/N,” He smiled. You hugged him tightly as he hugged you back. When you pulled away, he cupped your cheeks and kissed you passionately.
“I...miss...you...so much,” He tells you, in between kisses.
“I miss you too,” you say pulling away from the kiss. You look back at Pennywise who was asleep. You walked over and pulled the knife out. The alien didn’t move making you walk back to Robert.
“Let’s get out of here,” He tells you before taking your hand and leading you out.
“Robert, please don’t leave me,” You tell him.
“I promise,” Rober tells you before giving you a quick kiss.
“Now let’s get out of this place and take you home,” He said before leading you both out.
